hello my friend my name is ryan and i really appreciate you stopping by and to be honest i have so much to show you in such a short time so we're just gonna dive straight into the build let's go sorry about that audio i had a mic and then it broke so now i need a new mic and if you didn't notice those stains on my shirt that's good because neither did i no need to go back for a second look let's get on with the show i won't be talking over this entire video just a few quick things to cover right now and then in about 21 minutes after all these pallets have become a table i will go over the breakdown of how long those 21 minutes actually took in real time hours and of all the other costs associated with building a table out of free wood just for fun and humor me here i'm genuinely curious how long you think this took me to build grab yourself a pen and jot down your guess in hours and after we've gone through all the numbers at the end i'd love to hear from you in the comments about how close you were to hitting the nail on the head now this all started with a simple request from my wife for a patio table nothing fancy just something to be able to sit at outside for some reason i had the idea to make the table out of half a dozen pallets that i had kicking around my shop i could have kept it simple stuck with just the six pallets knocked it out moved on with life but then i had a vision i decided if i was going to put together a table out of pallet wood that i might as well push things to the limit so i started picking up pallets and quickly turned that half a dozen into about four dozen i tried some new things on this build and i will warn you now the end result is far from perfect i put things together based only on the vision i had in my head and a picture of a trestle table base i saw online in other words i kind of just made it up as i went which is usually never a good idea i really hope you enjoy what you're about to watch and i will catch that tabletop was an absolute beast to build and i would say my biggest area of needs improvement is in the hand-cut joinery department allow me to call myself out and saying that all that mortise and tenon work could have been a lot tighter in the intro i mentioned i tried some new things and that was one of them and typically anytime i do anything for the first time it is pretty bad honestly i could do a whole video on lessons learned and things i could do better but i've been dying to share how long everything took with you so grab that number you wrote down hang on to your hat and here we go collecting pallets four hours moving them around one hour tearing them apart 25 hours sorting everything eight hours loading up all the scrap and taking it to the landfill four hours removing all the nails six hours cleaning up and organizing two hours jointing each board 15 hours cleaning each board 18 hours all the table sawing 12 hours assembling panels 3 hours gluing up panels 10 hours planing panels sections 4 hours gluing up again four hours cutting the end grain strips and doing repairs ten hours final tabletop glue up one hour assembling parts for the base six hours gluing them up four hours flattening the top six hours trimming sides and cutting chamfers two hours milling all the base pieces 11 hours all the mortise work 14 hours hand cutting all the tenon 16 hours edge profile 1 hour gluing up the base 3 hours all the sanding 16 hours several coats of oil 4 hours creating the clips to attach the base to the top three hours creating the tusks two hours which brings us to a grand total of 215 hours of course there's probably a few hours not accounted for and not to mention the 60 or so hours it took to edit a 215 hour build down into a less than a half an hour video and here's some of the things i needed to buy to build a table out of free wood jointer knives 60 dollars three sets of planer knives 250 dollars and actually a new planer three hundred and fifty dollars table saw rip blade ninety dollars circular saw blade fifteen dollars five gallons of glue three hundred dollars ca glue twenty five dollars sand paper forty dollars pure tongue oil 90 landfill fees 45 for a grand total of 1 295 not to mention my gas driving around to collect all those pallets which at the time of making this video in 2022 was pretty expensive stuff and lastly just a few final stats on this build i took 52 pallets and turned them into 782 boards with an average length of 30 inches i ran each board at least four times through the jointer four times through the planer and twice through the table saw which equates to 19550 linear feet of milled pallet wood and one two three four five six seven eight nine 10 11 12 13 14 15 16 17 18 19 20 bags of sawdust and if you're curious about the weight the base weighs 71 pounds and the top weighs 115 pounds for a combined weight of 186 pounds or 84 kilograms if that's your preferred metric that's it my friend we have
