foreign as you can see this is probably the worst Buffet I've ever worked on there was a lot of rots and wood and the venue was completely gone it was a lot of work and I really hope you enjoyed this video [Music] foreign as always I try to keep it as original as possible but some pieces were simply too far gone to save them I've tried some new techniques with this project and I hope you'll be able to learn something new foreign [Music] foreign foreign [Applause] [Music] so this is the close-up of the damage and as you can see it's not just a veneer that's gone it's the substrate that it's glued onto but also this piece of wood and a piece of leg were rotten so they had to be repaired and as you can see it was just crumbling in my fingers so I decided that the best way to go about it was to replace the whole panel foreign foreign foreign [Music] foreign [Music] the handles in vinegar I cleaned them up with steel wire brush and unfortunately they were not made of brass it was some sort of cast metal that was coated [Music] foreign [Music] cool Ness in order to repair this damaged piece of wood I took it out just to make it easier for myself I removed the rotten portion of the wood using my pencil and I replaced it with those two dividers that I found inside of the buffet laughs foreign foreign thank you after hand planing the repair into the final shape I decided to keep the doors original there were lots of little pieces of veneer missing so I repaired all of them and I'm just gonna show you a few samples because I had over seven hours of footage from this restoration all right foreign coffee or using the super thanks button or using my Amazon wishlist link it really means a lot to me given I actually quit my day job in December and now I'm a full-time YouTuber so once again huge thank you and all the links are in the description if you would like to use them foreign foreign [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] that's right [Music] when I was done sanding I used oxalic acid to remove any stains that were in the wood and when the oxalic acid was dry I rinsed it with clear water and waited until the drying before I sanded it again foreign [Music] [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] foreign [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] for the handles I use antique gold which kind of look like copper and patina which gave them kind of greenish color with a hint of silver and all together they looked really really nice thank you this area was a bit tricky to clean up so that's why I use several different methods until I was happy with the result [Music] and after sanding I was finally ready for some color I went to my favorite supplier and got some stains I decided to go with Plum mahogany and light walnuts and the plum mahogany looked really really cool and because of the repaired piece of wood was a bit different color I gave it an extra coat of stain to match it with the rest and because this was spirit-based stain I was able to use it on some parts of the buffet that I did in sand [Music] foreign this was the first time I was going to apply veneer on such a large scale and I wanted to make sure that the surface wasn't rough otherwise you can have something that kind of looks like an orange peel thank you as I mentioned before I decided to go with the two-tone effect and try two different colors and this is the plum mahogany and when I was done staining the doors I went on a shopping trip to get some veneer I get some Walnut and some Oak veneer foreign guys if you enjoy my videos please do consider subscribing as most of you watching are not subscribers and also click the Bell so you get notified when I post new videos thank you what foreign I decided to try two most common methods of applying veneer this is the contact cement which you basically apply to both surfaces you wait until it's dry and then you press it together and they will adhere on contact the other method is you do the same thing with just normal wood glue wait until it dries and then you use an iron to iron it on just like you would do with Edge bending and then you need something to actually press the veneer down with and you would normally use something that's called a j-roller but supposedly it's not very good and there is a better tool which I didn't have so I decided to make it and the reason you would want to use this over a j-roller is because the contact area is much smaller so it gives you more pressure [Music] so it's actually pretty simple you just wait until the contact cement is dry and then you ideally put something between both surfaces so they don't stick until you're ready for them to stick and then you slowly press it down spoiler alert I did not like the contact cement method and I think it's mainly because it was really cold and it just got tacky really quickly foreign was actually really really good I made it from Pine so it would be soft and gentle on the veneer foreign I also sanded it by hand going with the grain just to make sure there was no residue left from the contact cement and that it was ready for the stain foreign say hi to YouTube what do you think do you like my project I cleaned the brass hinges with some steel wool and Bar Keeper's Friend and I did the same thing as I did to the handles and this is the other method which I told you about so basically the veneer and the substrate they both have glue on them they're dried and I'm just using my iron to reactivate it [Music] foreign [Music] ly I applied some oil and put it all together and I was so happy because this project took over two weeks to complete and here are the final results I hope you guys enjoyed this video and see you soon foreign [Music] [Music] thank you [Music] thank you
