hey I watched the bat guy I wasn't planning on checking it out until it hit HBO Max but then everybody started talking about how good it was and I got way more interested then Ben Shapiro said the movie was bad and I was like okay that's how you know this is the best Batman movie ever made so I watched it and yeah it kind of was I still think as a movie The Dark Knight is stronger but in terms of being a Batman movie specifically this is probably the best one we've ever gotten on screen at least out of the ones I've seen it Embraces everything that makes the character fun and unique giving us a story that's mostly serious but has just the right amount of comic book silliness sprinkled in it's also aesthetically gorgeous echoing the look and feel of the Arkham games really well while also feeling distinct from both those games and every other Batman movie before it the cast is uniformly great across the board with Robert Pattinson in particular making for perhaps my favorite Batman I've ever seen on screen he captures the badassery you'd expect from Batman but also the subtle fear and loneliness he experiences Beneath The Mask his version of Bruce Wayne looks and feels tortured in way that I haven't seen from this character before which is perfect one of this movie's best decisions was setting itself a mere two years into Batman's time as a superhero because this Batman isn't fully formed yet and that's fascinating he makes mistakes he's left in vulnerable positions sometimes and he still needs to grow emotionally as a person as a result his journey throughout this movie coming to terms with aspects of his past and trying to build a better future for himself and his city is just so powerful but we'll get more into that in spoiler territory first can we talk about the score the score for this movie hard Michael giacchino can do no wrong he's always been one of my favorite composers even when I was six years old and had no idea who he was I just heard that incredible score that goes [Music] and I said damn that's some good music I I didn't say damn though I was six I was only allowed to watch wholesome movies at that age without any swears like this one may his stinking magic coffee corpse rot in a fiery depths of Hell fun for the whole family but yeah this is honestly one of the best scores in comic book movie history it's so invigorating and eerie and haunting and beautiful and damn you better get this guy's Oscar ready Academy how has he not even been nominated since up y'all the cinematography and direction are also incredibly strong and the action who sweet Mama the action it's so well choreographed and visceral and thoroughly gripping like they took a look at that pretty cool Warehouse scene in Batman v Superman and said yeah actually that was just okay look what we can do when the Batmobile jumps through those Flames I said out loud this is Cinema I don't want to hear any arguments this time Martin just kidding I don't really have any beef with what Scorsese said about Marvel movies I mean how could I he was in Shark Tale that completely invalidates all criticism of him also he was right I also really loved how in sync Batman and Gordon were in this movie they make a great team Catwoman was cool but I don't love the fact that they temporarily got together romantically that seemed out of nowhere but I guess it fits with her character the penguin was fun but also kind of filler he wasn't really necessary to have in the story and not much would change without him and there are some pacing problems and a few stretches of the movie that feel a bit too slow which I guess is to be expected when your movie's three hours to be fair though for the most part it really didn't feel that long at all which is commendable all right I got some [ __ ] to do so we gotta wrap this up with some spoiler talk skip ahead to this part if you don't want spoilerinos three two one penguin played by Colin Farrell so the Riddler was really great in this it's basically the first time I've ever been intimidated by this character and that's despite the fact that they turned him into an Instagram influencer I mean I guess it does kind of fit his character so sure the bomb scene was fantastic but what really got to me was this dude's motivation and how he was also an orphan like Bruce but Bruce got all the media attention and sympathy because rich and famous Bruce obviously went through a lot of pain but not nearly the same amount as actual poor orphans which huh I never really thought about that that's an interesting breakdown of this aspect of his character that we've all just kind of taken for granted over the years but the way Riddler talks about how Batman inspired him plus the way Catwoman seeks Vengeance on Falcone and expects Batman to help her kill him really makes you think oh [ __ ] is Batman striking fear into the hearts of criminals a bad influence on others it's a question previous Batman movies haven't really grappled with but it's so compelling to call into question this core aspect of the character for the first hour and a half or so this is just an incredibly well executed standard Batman detective story but the introduction of this particular killer theme elevates it to something more it all comes to a head during the final battle where Riddler's Army of redditors are trying to assassinate the new mayor they pin one of them down and ask who he is and he says I'm Vengeance and let me tell you that gave me full body chills because I was thinking that throughout the second half of the movie how Catwoman and Riddler both probably consider themselves to be Vengeance in the same way Batman would but their version of it is far more extreme and twisted and damaging it's like Baljeet said that one time violence can only lead to more violence and so Batman instead decides to focus on saving people trapped in the flood and like I doubt this scene was intended to be a tearjerker but I actually got a little misty-eyed seeing him help others because that's just not what we associate Batman with he's always been my second favorite superhero after Spider-Man but more so because he's cool and he has an amazing Rogues Gallery not so much because he particularly feels like a hero because he's not he's an anti-hero and that's cool and [ __ ] but seeing such an icon become the hero that Gotham deserves become what so few cinematic Batman have been before him was just so powerful there's something so striking about the image of him helping people during the day like that feels like a conscious choice to have this character so associated with Knight out there in broad daylight making a difference I don't know man I just love that [ __ ] this movie rocks and has some issues here and there but overall it might just be the best interpretation of Batman we've ever gotten on the big screen and one I'm eager to watch again in the future right now I'm feeling an eight out of 10 for it though I could bump it up to a nine on rewatch it's like right on the edge between those two scores anyway yeah go see it it's epic also I watched peacemakers I'll talk about that real quick it's pretty good but some of the jokes go on for way too long and aren't that funny also they say [ __ ] so often that it's kind of annoying but the story is pretty good and the characters are fun and John Cena is a pretty good actor who knew 7 out of ten good night tri-state area [Music] [Applause]
