New Year's Day 1986 UCLA at some other pac-10 title with a Bruin style rout of Iowa in the Rose Bowl UCLA planned another championship campaign this season but jubilation is turning into frustration and disappointment as the Bruins have been pounded and surrounded at almost every turn leaving coach Terry Donahue searching for answers but for the 1986 Arizona Wildcats everything is coming up roses Arizona is undefeated and flying high as it chases its first pac-10 crown ever head coach Larry Smith has the Wildcats on the road to the Rose Bowl while Terry Donahue is trying to get the Bruins back on its championship track [Music] today it's Arizona versus UCLA as the race for the roses continues well I wouldn't count any still I out and I think that we still have a chance at the conference championship if we can beat Arizona to this it's the conference champion from a year ago and I think that if you're going to be a contender yourself and establish for something contender I feel that you got to beat the best and there's no question you still is the best so we're live in the Rose Bowl in Pasadena as Arizona takes on UCLA on CBS Sports [Music] a crowd expected to reach 50,000 this afternoon is gathering on an unexpectedly gloomy Saturday in October here in Southern California overcast skies as Arizona gets set to take on UCLA in Los Angeles while the first time since 1982 this is a relatively fresh series in these Arizona Wildcats getting set to take the field with their number 11 ranking in the country [Applause] currently 4 & 0 they have won their one conference encounter Larry Smith now in his seventh year in the Tucson campus [Music] and a good crowd has gathered here making a trip up from Busan and here come the home squad the UCLA Bruins they are the defending Rose Bowl champions but it's been a rocky season so far knocked off most recently by Arizona State last week now that has Terry Donahue in some degree of exasperation trying to figure out exactly what is happening with his squad good morning everybody I'm Vermont West along with Pat Haden as these two teams get set to meet here in the second pac-10 encounter for the year and Pat I think it's safe to say that though it's only the second conference game for UCLA piss really is a critical afternoon for them well it's a very important game for UCLA because of all the high expectations people have for this team it played in four straight January first bowl games they expected to play in a January first bowl game this year but Terry Donahue said they must win today if they expect to be playing in the Rose Bowl on January 1st this year and he feels if they lose they're out of the conference race they have been disappointing do you have any idea in your mind what's wrong it's the office the offense has been disappointed in today Matt Stevens is going to have to have a big day throwing the football for UCLA to win because simply put you cannot run the ball against Arizona so if Matt Stevens has a big day throwing the ball particularly on first down UCLA will be successful this is a critical game for UCLA not quite that important but significant I think in a very real sense for Arizona I'm really impressed with this Arizona team I think this team is ready to take the next step in their performance and win a conference crown now Larry Smith has won in the past with great defense and special teams but what makes this Arizona team a little bit difference is the offense the balance in the offense in particular they've never been able to run the ball like you have this year there has been a potential problem considering the office with Arizona and for an update on that let's go down to our colleague John Dockery Thank You Vernon that's alfred jenkins behind me there he's had problems all week long as a matter of fact he's been sick he's lost 11 pounds he's been unable to keep anything down I just spoke to him before the game there was some question as to whether he would play he told me he was tired but that this was a big game and he would definitely be out there the locker room was very quiet before the game but Jenkins will play and that's a story right now from the locker room I just came back up now back up to you Verne all right John we're just about set as the captains make their way to the center of the field the kickoff coming up air CLA pac-10 football live from the Rose Bowl and by Kentucky Fried Chicken Kentucky Fried Chicken we do chicken right bit of a gloomy Saturday afternoon temperature of 70 degrees in humility of 68 percent and continued cloudy for most of today a slight whiff of Southwest of seven miles per hour Jeff Valtor getting set to kickoff for the Arizona Wildcats they won the toss he elected to delay their obstacle the second half say UCLA will receive Emily and Cornell Lake are the two deep men for the Bruins which is Daryl Henley and pumped hard as he gets out to the 12 yard line another example or an early example of this outstanding special teams of Arizona Tom Basie makes the tackle UCLA on offense Willie Anderson the wide receiver Matt Stephens is going to be throwing the ball a lot his way today might go deep early to him Carl Darrell the other flanker from San Diego California Derek to nail the tight end will be featured inside the 20 yard line in the passing game and had Stevens who went on the spot this afternoon has been sluggish the last couple of weeks let's see if he might go upstairs on first down watch for Willie Anderson lined up left side here Stevens goes for the secondary receiver the short man it's caught at the 27 yard line by Gaston green who's been out the last couple of weeks played a little bit last week but has been bothered by bunions the fullback they mail for our junior from Birmingham Michigan number 22 James Freeman was supposed to start but just prior to the game I named Gaston green to go in that spot Derrick Rodgers at left tackle Jim Alexander at left guard the center is Joe Gogol and we'll get the other two in just a moment second down and one Stephens again left side to the short man and that's good for the first down for 34 at green again remain though that offensive line can UCLA after the first day I almost want to build a right guard and the right tackle is John Kidder they have been problems they have not played that well so far a Homer Smith their offensive coordinator of UCLA felt that he did not throw the ball enough last week in the first half obviously their game plan here is to throw the ball and they think he can get the ball both deep two flipper Anderson and into the flat 35 yard line backs in the I fell applaud gasps green action play Stevens the pits back to Gaston green let's hit loose around right in he may be closed for another first down seeing a completely different type of start here from UCLA watch the option play which they ran last week a little bit successfully but they didn't really pitch the ball too much on the option here is Gaston scream one of the differences in UCLA is they've missed his speed his breakaway speed there he picked up close to a first-time actually he did pick up the first down but you're gonna see UCLA both throw the ball to get gas and green in the flat and feature him and the option play as well he's been bothered by a bunion problem sore feet and had a mediocre day last week 1st down and 10 second in succession for UCLA and again on first down here Stevens with the home run overthrown [Applause] flipper Anderson the intended receiver on defense for Arizona Jorge Hinkle at left tackle out of Roberts Ville Missouri Jim Birmingham Panos Garden and stand mop to LA the white tackle at the street story mafia he can really put pressuring the a dominating pass rusher six sacks linebackers are boomer Gibson from Orange California Redwoods small 5 10 to 15 Byron Evans and Danny locket is the fourth member of that quartet second down again and again Stephens is going upstairs by the pressure this time it's incomplete left side Danny Lockett leads his team in sacks when near the good pass dresser led to led the conference in sacks last year Martin Rudolph at birth cornerback was the guy that Matt Stephens wants to pick on today James des Beaux who was a running back a year ago eugene hardy the free safety and a dandy and strong safety name is Chuck seesaw he can play and expect him he's going to try to block a punt today then that lot his career third and 10 UCLA no score first quarter Stevens intercept it flying down the sideline his Byron Evans touchdown Arizona unless he stepped out of bounds back at the 22 and that is the indication [Applause] [Music] Byron Evans a year ago was the Arizona defense big-play man this year although he's played well he hasn't had the big plays he has not had an interception or a fumble recovery right here in the opening drive you see a light with it looked pretty good he steps right in front of Matt Stevens now we talked about it even trying to get the ball into the flat this one was not well thrown because there's too many defenders right there a good read by bio-rad who's now watch where he steps out of bounds no he didn't step out of bounds there right there on the line on the line that the officials right there that's where he called him out on about the 22 yard line but that's a big play by Evans something he has not provided yet this year bad results on an Arizona first down at the 22 yard line and there's a good look at Byron Evans number 48 but do you see the way he read Matt Stephens he's watching Stevens his eyes the whole time they just drove on the ball made a nice and such a good catch first down Wildcats most 13:26 go first corner David Adams all five 67 pounds worth let's meet this Arizona offense now Jeff Lionheart love tackle out of Norristown Pennsylvania velvet chuck is at left guard Joe Topol mired he is a terrific football boy Frank Arreola at right guard Bryan Denton the right tackle offensive line needs to be affected very much and first down they want to gain four yards rushing the ball on first down second down and seven again from the I formation sprint Dolloff there's a bobble from Jenkins the option play and he was caught up in a frenzy at the right end spot in his down at the 18 by Frank bachik off number 92 in the backfield there's alfred jenkins david adams starts at tailback only 5 6 he hides behind those big offensive tackles in the line fullback is Joe Pryor 511 222 pounds and the receiver is John Horton at split end Derek Hill can really go deep latias item that's enough a troublesome position and there is our Jenkins despite a virus studying quarterback Derek Hill in motion Hobson play Jenkins lobs it out and overthrows the intended receiver Joe briar the full-back and we'll see the field going in it come on it was good defense by Greg Boland number 91 the inside linebacker for UCLA who forced Jenkins to throw the ball high get it over in that just didn't have the quite touch the right touch to get the ball to Pryor Arizona has the luxury of two field goal kickers on the traveling squad gary Costin is the man who is used inside the 40 yard the range tossed into six of seven this year and he'll attempt this field goal from 35 yards out well he gets the ball up quickly to very high very reminiscent of John lead there it is and it's good he's seven of eight for the season and the Wildcats of Arizona turned the Byron Evans interception into a three-point play Arizona's on top with 1206 to go first quarter [Music] Byron Evans has the first big play of the afternoon that 28 yard returned with an intercepted pass that gave Arizona terrific field position at the 22 Gary Causton kicked a field goal and the Wildcats lead three nothing UCLA about to receive the ball for the second time Jeff bounders kick low one hopper and taken out Darrel Henley number two and again the special teams effort of Arizona pays dividends when Larry Smith spends more time on special teams than any head coach I've ever met if they start with a very first day in their training camp talking about special teams as a matter of fact the very first meeting is about special teams and their kickoff team is really back you see left foot UCLA up twice now that is Darrell Jones who made the tackle it might be slightly injured filter his Matt Stevens he has gone to the air early and often [Applause] Marcus Greenwood is in the lineup when we got quiet you can see Joe Goebbels don't snap the ball there he is the center few CLA as soon as he sees an Arizona defender move he'll snap the ball take the 85 yard good heads-up play by Joe Goble to Center Stevens did that a couple times last week offside Arizona Jim Birmingham is the man who jumped across well Terry Donahue told us day before yesterday we can't run on Arizona sit at more time Ginny yes so it is no surprise that UCLA has gone airborne and we expect to see that an awful lot until they loosen up that defense a little bit first and five this time 11:50 to go first what is ly nothing Arizona not the Sun the Aspen green for a couple it has been a troublesome season so far and Matt Stevens the quarterback talked about what the problems have been with UCLA well we had hiked season started and you know I was trying to tell everybody it's not where you start it's where you finish and [Music] for me sometimes like I can't figure out what Ram I'm gonna wear out you know Friday night so naturally really live a confident but when it comes expectations I think you still know that we're a good team just having put together yeah those are your words that was Matt Stevens who was on the bench for that play as Brendan McCracken came in that's a change that Terry Donahue has made or the wishbone formation for this week Pat Brendan McKay McCracken is a sophomore quarterback there he's a much better run at runner than Matt Stevens is matter of fact boomer Smith says he really could be a halfback has four six speed they want to use him and the option get him to the outside really as a change of pace against this Arizona defense remember that wishbone forces a defensive team to play more at home takes away some of their aggressiveness and because Arizona flies all over the place they think the wishbone can make them be more disciplined they'll measure for the first down I want to ask you a question though UCLA shoulder wishbone it is a first down they showed the wishbone last week against Arizona State Larry Smith saw badly they prepared this week for the wishbone but they prepared for it with Matt Stephens at quarterback and they also saw them just run inside plays last weekend Arizona's defense said they were going to Suzie saw the wishbone they were going to pinch inside until UCLA wants a counter crunch and get the ball outside on a third option expect to see that through the duration of the day and the crack and replacing students from the is an operation first down UCLA they pray all three nothing and Stevens is back in see if they're going on their seventh round play fake stephen's looking deep and then had to be a freelance play and he throws it away intended for Lily Anderson good coverage there by Martin Rudolph you see I really felt he had a great matchup between Willie Anderson the number 27 Rudolph of the Wildcats they felt like throwing the ball deep early to Willie Anderson which we saw them do that they he would play so safe and so far off that they could run the out pattern but good coverage there by Rudolph this is a stout offensive unit of Arizona 235 yards given up per game both wide receivers are wide at the top of your screen wide right on second and 10 Stevie's 206 the fullback gets the handoff Marcus Greenwood who was out last week and Byron Evans is there to make the tackle this is the situation in about a third and eight situation we're just really faced much last week and they really wanted to stay out of this kind of situation because Arizona can really come after the passer they have 14 facts this year we understand at a third long this is not Matt Stevens is really Forte his type of game where he could drop back and find a receiver down hill now let's watch Arizona defensive play on third and seven again the plate bacon pretty good protection but cut downfield coverage forces him to go to the alternate receiver again and that is short of the first down as Greenwood makes the catch but only at the 35 well that's good smart defense they had all the wide receivers covered they forced everybody in front of me and Steven just dumped the ball off but you see how the linebackers react they swarm around the ball about as well as any defenses you gonna see boomer Gibson played a beautifully and forced a punt that brings on Harold Barcade for the first time and a ten man front for Arizona see if they go for the block of their turf Chuck Cecil number six is the man who feels he can block a punt Bart gave at the 21 now the return is on for the most part this time there I kill sophomore gathers it in at the 13 and is the 14 yard line let's talk a little bit about the UCLA special teams as Greg Boland number 91 led the charge down and the Wildcats had the ball at the 14 yard line Larry Smith prowling the sidelines John Dockery our man down to the sideline was in the locker room with the Arizona team John what did they have to say a prior to this game Vernon was interesting defensive coordinator Chris Allen gave the pep talk and he emphasized upper tuna tease for Arizona a gray up dog in the pac-10 to knock off UCLA we were having problems with John's mic but if they had to do with playing the defending champion here at home and Chris Allen as John said gave a lot for applause there's a good defensive surge by Frank back off number 92 and David Adams number two made the tackle UCLA defense wants to force Alfred Jenkins to beat him with their arm but much like Matt Stephens is gonna have to have a big day the UCLA defense played very very well last week they really take the way the run we got certainly a couple of big passes they want to force Jenkins willing to throw the ball put them in situations like this 8:40 to go 1st quarter 3 nothing Arizona leads 35-yard Gary Causton field goal after an interception emotions out David Adams weaves out to the outside and is knocked out of bounds at the 17 now for an update in college football let's go to Jim Nance in New York well burn David Clarke a senior for Penn State scored his first touchdown of the season what a big one it was he barrels a cross and puts Penn State in front with three minutes to go go back to Vernon Pat Thank You Jamie Penn State having unexpected difficulties today remember they struggled last year along the way and play for the national championship on January 1st 823 to go and we've got a third down and eight now facing Arizona Jenkins draw play David Adams first down Wildcats at the 28 smart play and this is where UCLA got hurt last week on third and long situations when Arizona State ran the football Arizona is doing the same type of thing it was truck alia passing down nickel defense in to c4 lineman the Terry - we took an onside rush that created a natural gap there for David Adams but to me rushing inside created the hole for Adams to pick up the first down that that was really concerning Tom Hayes the defensive coordinator how Arizona State ran so well last week well Paul they picked up tons of yardage on third and long highest refresh on the state first and 10 Wildcats they lead three nothing yes it to his fullback Joe prior and that didn't look pretty fullback runs eventually don't lose the last time you saw an exciting fullback run the nature of the position is ugly you had a fullback in nose guard those are two two positions you don't volunteer for you know but I would say those guys can block for errors on a prior and welcome back you know all of them read the way for David Adams Jeff Fairholme has come into the lineup now at one of the wide receiver spot to second down and eight those were the men as we come again David Adams Adams missed most of last of the last game that Arizona played against Colorado thankfully we talked about the blocks of the full-back of Arizona watch Joe Pryor number 32 he's going to come into the screen and make the clear block for David Adams good offensive line surge there by Coughlin Meyer at the center there's 32 right the middle of the screen boom right there on Kenny Norton that's a terrific block and that's what you need to do your tailbacks gonna have some daylight if the run was ugly that was handsome third down for Jenkins when the swing pass that happens who makes a nice catch but that's short of the first down at the 36 and the Wildcats who be forced to punt where Alfred Jenkins really had to slow the rough delivery for quarterback you got it Arizona Wildcat injured on the field but Jenkins really winds up takes up a really a slow throw it comes out of the net out of his hand very slowly the injured player is Jeff Fairholme out of Toronto whose father made the trip down here from Canada to watch Jeff play today and he looks like he's holding his left arm or shoulder I've seen so many players who with all the speed momentum they have you can hit you fall down you can separate that shoulder just from a push in the back on the ground and really jam that shoulder elbow into the ground he's been a game breaker for the Wildcats in fact caught the winning touchdown pass and the come-from-behind win over Colorado 64 yards terrific speed but how unfortunate that his father makes the trip here in Los Angeles or the Pasadena and watch him play and there's chem Norton jr. Timmy Norton's the one was blocked by Joe Pryor moments ago he's got a fight off those block inside linebackers have to get rid of blockers as soon as they can so they can make the play I will get an injury update from John Dockery as soon as we can on Jeff Barrett Ruben Rodriguez is on the pump for the first time he has been terrific addition of this Arizona's fly Darrell Henley is the beep man number two plates it to 25-yard line good block allows Rodriguez to make the kick and a fair catch signal that the 3300 what a terrific block buddy up back so Rodriguez has punt is away it's only a 31 yard kick has the ball back that's Rick Neuheisel the former UCLA quarterback just to the left to head coach Jerry Donahue are left Terry's right right serving on Donahue staff three nothing is the score was six nineteen to go on the first quarter in UCLA having difficulty as we expect it they would moving the ball in state now leads 23 17 fourth quarter got it safety in that game first down in ten UCLA trailing by three Stephen for the pitch out on first down Gaston green coming left gets to the 35 yard line Arizona has a different defensive philosophy whereas most teams play players either on the right side or the left side they have players that play the field in the boundary because in college football with the wide hash marks they put their best players out on the wide side of the field and force you to run to the short side of field into the boundary and use that as a defender interesting Foss path did the protein use the hash marks as much as college not this remember the pro hash marks are toward the center of the field that here there's a big big difference second down and eight five 40 40 pitches one of Stephens play pays nobody opened deep again good coverage little screen pass though right side doesn't develop like they had hope Mel farm makes the catch and Martin Rudolph number 27 makes the tackle but it's the right kind of call against this defense who they're going to force you everything in front you've got to beat them with the short pass up front and in the offensive backs once they get the ball in their hand or gonna have to break some tackles if you Scylla is gonna have some success Carl Darrell number eight brings the play in and they will not apparently go pinoys go no they will not as his Steven stays in on third down and four Marcus Greenwood in a the full-back position [Applause] deston Green has blockers in front what a terrific defensive play Brentwood number 35 at 510 207 they call him a well the Arizona linebackers played deep very deep five or six yards off the ball and their first step is for their attacking the line of scrimmage they don't skate down the line and look how quickly Brent Road came in a picture remember he is a linebacker look how deep they are five six yards the right there the middle of the screen there that is a long way away from the football but they can react toward the line of scrimmage their first step is always forward isn't it almost that's Barcade on here comes the block and Chuck Cecil has done it the hair is son of still running for the football bottling it now they fought on it touchdown [Applause] [Applause] Ropin bunker [Applause] last night Chuck Cecil was smiling about that he a we asked if he thought he could block a punt and a little smirk and smile came on his face and he said we've got something a little special he came from the right guard position shot the gap Cecil said last night he had partially deflected one and barely missed two others and he had a feeling that the day he could get it watch the right inside of the defense number six that's what truck seats will come from now he blocked the punt last year against UCL as when he comes absolutely cleanly no chance he just laid out perfectly he knew he had it all the way the ball Denis wood wasn't even attempt to be punted actually the ball gets kicked around ultimately gets into the end zone gets kicked there accidentally by an Arizona player if that had been a purposeful kick it would not have been allowed again an accidental kick and there's recoveries with a touchdown but believe it or not Arizona has now blocked 21 either punch or kick since 1982 I find that phenomena again on the special team by Larry Smith that's the handsome envisage of Chuck Cecil Arizona leads it by 10 for 16 remaining in the first quarter Arizona's 21st blocks is 82 has resulted in a rich group and Buckner touchdown and a 10 nothing lead and Jeff bounders getting rid of the kickoff Henley and Carnell Lake of the deep man this time it's the linebacker Carnell Lake number 31 he is a high school running back and he's down at the 27 yard line let's take another look at Chuck seesaw I see boxes this putt now you see he's the man served on the left tackle left guard have to bump him before they're released now watch the left guard he is just gonna go straight down the field without getting his shoulder he tries to put his left wing up there but does not do any kind of job of stopping Chuck Cecil down and ok the punter had just had absolutely no chance whatsoever remarkable record on special teams first down 10 UCLA they have the ball at their own 21 27 Stevens draw play that was mixed up from the outset Jim Birmingham makes the tackle in the National League Championship Series the Mets come from behind and win at 6 5 as Lenny Dykstra hits a two-run homer after Darryl Strawberry and earlier hit a three-run shot to tie it up early goings into Houston was going to do it we're live from the Rose Bowl in Pasadena Verne Lundquist Pat Haden and John Dockery has fallen behind Jim nothing second down Stevens drop that's the 17th sack so far this season for the Wildcats of Arizona well the reason Arizona has so many sacks is because they put you in passing situations they stop the run now watch mata le come in he's number 99 he's gonna do a nice job Birmingham is 59 mata he gets right on the corner of the tackle there know where the corners got to step out and push metalli away from Steven so he can step up into the pocket or that is his seventh sack of the year from the island of Tonga he is only in his fourth year of football he's a rugby player in a Wahoo third down and 20 110 nothing Arizona leaves keep it conservative mata a late well that's going your cards down on the table on third and 20 well third 21 Terry Donny you felt they have no rhythm offense well I don't think it's necessarily a bad call with the last thing you want to do is another turnover right there they figure punt the ball away play decent defense try to stop them and start again well you got a as Kenny Rogers said know when to hold of no one to fold them and here is Harold Park 8 and we'll keep our eye on Chuck Siegel Cecil he's the third man in from the right hand side here they come again and they get another one unbelievable the ball is dead at the 11:00 Martin Rudolph finally recovered it that is the 22nd one since 1982 no people forget how much special-teams mean to a football club they play thirty percent of the game and Larry Smith was telling us last night but the punt is the most important in play and football protecting your punter and actually funny watch again this time UCLA protects Cecil but number 44 Gibson is right there he's lays out and somebody else gets a hand on an another Arizona defender couldn't catch his number but they are two or three Arizona people around the ball there again remarkable look like Paul castor sugar he's the one who tipped the ball but Gibson was in there as well first down Arizona happy 11 motion flags are down and that will settle things down for the moment Pat I want to go back and point out something that Arizona does they do live blocking drills about 15 20 minutes a week and Bob April who's the secondary coach and kicking coordinator is in charge of that I haven't heard that much of that here are people kind of practice punt blocks but not live like they do and they have regulars in there like Cecil and Gibson they puts a huge premium on the special teams like I said the first meeting when they come into camp each summer is a special teams meeting that sets the tone one block recovered for a touchdown one deflected recovered at the 11th first half defeat David Adams to about the 12 now this is obviously going to affect Arizona's play calling now the defense and special teams are playing so well and they're already up by 10 points you're gonna see Arizona kind of pound the ball right there against UCLA if they have to they'll kick a field goal go up 13 nothing in force UCLA to throw the ball there is some confusion there they're trying to get their blocking schemes you can see Terry done you talking to people are talking about the size the gap people gonna have to put down their protection on the punt block second down and 12 Arizona up by 10 with 1:40 to go first water [Applause] the option play Adams gets a new clock and Charles Webb and Adams has pumped out of bounds inside the five of the three that is short of the first down it will bring up third and two when James Washington really came over and made a play here's another look at the option now for Jenkins is a big man he's 6 for 218 pounds remember not feeling very well that looked like really like a pitch all the way promise you to come down the line a little bit more but he the David Adams gets the outside in James Washington number 3 really made a touchdown saving tackle but I think had Jenkins run down the scrimmage and look line of scrimmage a little bit more they might have gotten some more out of it Adams limps off and art Greathouse the freshman from Tempe has taken his fight the right side third and two from the three [Applause] let's see if he got enough it was Chris Macklemore number 20 it was surprising to me though they actually didn't run to their left because that they didn't make the first down they would have been in the middle of the field for an easier field goal now they got a severe angle and it is short of the first down it'll be fourth and one I think a kick here the field goal is the right call they're gonna go up 30 no they make the field goal UCLA office really has not been productive in Arizona's defense no they aren't going for they are going for it on fourth and one you'll see where the spot occurs [Applause] UCLA says we've got it well the UCLA team needed a big play and it came right there with her defense and it is short well I did I I think that's could be a very big momentum shift I'm surprised I have hi overcoats again I kicked a field goal because those UCLA's offense really is doing money let me give you a counter-argument to that isn't that a testimony to Larry Smith belief in his defense that he's got UCLA backed up on the two they haven't moved the ball at all so far and his offensive line has played well for him this year but I still think with the way their defenses up 13 no as you see Lana she is not showed me much maybe a safety it is they've done it every which way you can stand but the Haley he has been sensational we see month they only make a sacrament statement this even stopped the draw play and here we see him create the safety here's a man that's only played football for four years [Music] watch mutt daily he's number 99 he's gonna come right back on the back side on the left guard number 61 Eric Rogers again puts a wing out there they can get in this way and there's no way they're not going to get out of out of the end zone I suppose Larry Smith thought that the 12-nothing was almost as good as 13 there's your fuel another look there's a lot of penetration actually money came from the inside right there right over the center nobody even touched him made a nice little move he moves pretty well for a man 280 pounds you believe that he plays the piano as well from the island of Tonga and that is not a look of pleasure on Terry Donahue his face wait did you see all the movement in an Arizona front it's tough for an offensive lineman and try to block a defensive lineman net when you're moving that quickly where they're just so quick off the ball you can't get your helmet in well nothing with 39 seconds to go first quarter and this has been everything that Arizona dreamed in a nightmare for UCLA we've had an interception two blocked punts and a safety when do we return to conventional football [Applause] and every time you get a safety in a ballgame burn there's always going to be an unusual strategy that a coach is going to have to make if the game gets closed as an interesting thing that they'd Aggie our statistician just pointed out that was the first time this year however that Arizona has not scored once they've been inside the opposing 20-yard line they did score but their defensive unit did it at the stub offense we stopped on fourth and one free-kick Derek Hale hazard watch again as Stan Mota a late number 99 gets the safety has 280 pounds and he's been excited 280 pounder rightfully so took up football at Sacramento City College the coach there saw him lifting weights he was lifting 500 pounds and the coach's eyes got big and Cindy hey that's good coaching didn't never gonna hey put him on the line 34 seconds to go first quarter Alfre jenkins play fake now here's where he's dangerous UCLA looks disheartened on defense the defensive had to do so much the last couple of weeks for UCLA there's just too much pressure on the UCLA defense now this is a play you really can't defend against now you see lies pass coverage they play a lot of man coverage and a man who is not covered in man-for-man defense is the quarterback they instructed Jenkins if his receivers were covered just to take the ball under his arm and get downfield they did a beautiful job of running ought to be the final play of the first quarter options way David Adams quad and Rock down at the 45 Carnell Lake number 31 made the tackle that's the end of the first quarter and hit his Finan Arizona joyride through 15 will return to the Rose Bowl in Pasadena California after this message and were clear what this nation Terry Donahue has been called by some the wizard of worry and I'm sure the furrows in his brow have increased in the last 15 minutes what has to happen here the defense has to come up with a big play really just to give their offense another chance whether it's a fumble a sack an interception something like that to get there off it's a chance of good field position Arizona in the meantime opens the second quarter with a second down and 12 at the UCLA 45 yard line parts of motion Jenkinson it's deep settles right side Derrick Hill to the 20-yard line of the first down the problems continue for UCLA the hayride continues for Arizona Martinez Turner made the tackle look at it again nice touch there by Alfred Jenkins and the offensive line did their job because there was really no one near Alfred Jenkins look at the protects no one breaking through right there plenty of time for Ginga to pick out a receiver nice little touch there he came all the way across the field and that's a very well designed play by Arizona first down 10 Arizona they already lead 12 nothing and off the David Adams tries like guard then slips out the white tackle where he is caught him dois burl untwist Pat Haden and John Dockery live in the Rose Bowl in Pasadena where two blocked punts an interception and a safety have resulted ultimately in a 12 nothing Arizona lead and it has been an awesome Wildcat display UCLA came in with concerns they did not play well last week Arizona still not knowing what they had despite being four and oh and inquest of course of their first ever trip to the Rose Bowl alfred jenkins playing despite weakness from osiris Monday night shutting down 10 the option to the left side Jenkins delays and pitches to Adams that's down to the 11 yard line where he's knocked out of bounds and that was a little nicer option there by Alfred Jenkins because he kept the ball a little bit longer the first time we saw him run he pitched the ball over to too early this time he comes down the line of scrimmage a great block by Jeff Reinhardt the left tackle number 64 watch how long this time he hangs on to the ball he reads the defense when someone comes up on him then he pitches the ball to David Adams Craig relish fought off a block there to make a nice tackle that brings up a third down and one with 1407 to go first half and they will go from the on formation at the 11 [Applause] the pullback risk macklemore number 20 senior from las vegas tackled by the two linebackers Norton and Greg Bolin Bolin starting four champs Johnson where the offensive line for Arizona has been another thing that's really made Larry Smith so happy because we seen them both protect after Jenkins on that pass to Hill a few moments ago and then they really are controlling the control to the line of scrimmage you're seen none of the kind of penetration by the UCLA defense at the Arizona defense is giving the UCLA offense so offensive line doing a great job 1st down and 10 Arizona first and goal actually from the 9 yard line with a 12 nothing lead we'll have the Prudential college football report with Jim Nance back in our New York studios at halftime if you saw some of the top ten scores robot can't give up a touched in here reverse one man to beat and he can't beat the one man boy Darryl Headley really did a terrific job of staying home and diagnosing that play well that is really tough when you're on defense too and you're trying to come up with a big defensive play you know you need a big defensive play but Darryl Henley number two stayed right at home set up well they run a couple of option plays then they come back to the reverse to Hill but number two Henley is right there not only just stay at home he made a good tackle was not juked out by him good pipe second down and six from the five if you joined us late chuck Cecil's block punt resulted in a touchdown an interception set up a field goal Stan Mata a laze tackle of Gaston Greene as a safety is 12 nothing Arizona David oh what a block he got flag is down there is a touchdown and also a play [Applause] and it's a holding call Arizona back they'll wipe it out and it was well away from the play it looks like the holding call is on the right side of the line of scrimmage when they ran left Jeff Reinhardt the left tackle Arizona's a huge man over 300 pounds and really controlling his man they're gonna run to his side right here just a little power play now we've seen Arizona run both the option and seen him throw the ball and then run the power play off the line of scrimmage good Reinhart in but check it's the left guard both made good clocks the holding call was on the right side of the offensive line it wipes out the David Adams touchdown and the great Jill Breyer blocked and gives Arizona suck him down and goal from the 15-yard line our great house back in the lineup number 40 now lined up in the eye behind your fire [Applause] naked reverse Jenkins out of the tackle but then caught and dropped at the nineteen again northern number forty-one collapsed around it if an Eric Smith number 98 really was the one who really stopped the play stayed at home again good disciplined defense inside the twenty here watch Eric Smith he runs down out for Jenkins this is another dimension that Jenkins can provide for you but Smith was not fooled but that's the kind of plays that the UCLA defense needs right now and then Norton finishes him off the touchdown wiped out by the holding call that was a sack and a loss back to the 19 it's third and goal from the 19 Jeff Fairholme is back in the game the left with what appeared to be a shoulder injury in the first quarter Jenkins good walking deep in the end zone and the man was out of bounds it's Fairholme who was trying to tiptoe on the back and he may have reinjure that shoulder well he really took a shot there I'll tell you that terrific concentration by Fairholme as well but as you mentioned get the foot down in bounds at the end watch the hit here at the end of the play by Fairholme just one foot he's trying to keep in I think it's Rutledge there really he isn't a nice popping up underneath the right that shoulder the left shoulder that he had hurt Gary Costin is on to try a 36-yard field goal he is connected once today from 35 got it and the Arizona lead continues to mount it's up to 15 right now back with 1156 to go first half Arizona on top 15 nothing Byron Evans interception set up a carry cost and field goal to make a three nothing chuck cecil's block resulted in a touchdown that was Tim nothing Stan Mota a late tackle Gaston green in the end zone for a safety that made it 12 nothing and tossed and just picked his second field goal it's 15 nothing Arizona kick has taken four yards in the end zone by Hindley a flag is down Henry is finally down at the 18 yard line it was a fumble there I don't know who recovered it it's like UCLA did flag is over on this side of the field - Emily recovered his own fumble the first time the return team though really got the ball out past the 20 yard line [Music] referee today is Jack spring that he's gonna let us know about the infraction James sprinkler Baker mark [Applause] flipping spoke too soon about the impasse the 20-yard line if it hasn't gone wrong for UCLA at will [Applause] once again as we just said costing 35-yard field goal after an interception mated clean up e and the touchdown cecil block pump recovered by Griffin Bronco that made it 10 nothing and Stan lava a late tackle green for a safety to make it 12 nothing and then most recently tossed his second field goal made Arizona a 15 point leader in the ballgame Matt Stevens at quarterback James premise and milf are the backs now behind the crowd that's an Arizona crowd down in that end zone Pass is logged out at Clark [Applause] [Music] ladies and gentlemen due to technical difficulties our program has been temporarily interrupted please stand by we will resume just as soon as possible I hope you get back soon very alright John Brennan McCracken in on the wishbone Gaston green is the ball carrier [Applause] now we had some audio and video problems but those have now been corrected and on that second downplay which you might have missed gas the green took the pitch out of the wishbone and they'll measure for the pressure for the first down UCLA really needs to do to get themselves back in this ball game Vernon's just kind of round out a couple of first downs right now it's not so much they even have to come up with a a big play offensive way but keep their defense on the bench let the rest of it pick up a couple of first downs calm themselves down a little bit and then try to get themselves back in the ball game that much neither for the first down and it'll be third in a foot for the UCLA Bruins well they have been perennial E slow starters but it's usually in the 80s been this week Pat when they picked up the street well as turned on you said they cannot afford to lose today because two losses today and it the way the competitive conference is they're out of go hunt wishbone again the cracked in the quarterback he'll keep it and at least quiet the Arizona crowd for just a moment the UCLA defense has to be happy to get three downs of rest at least see if McCracken stays in it comes out [Applause] and I've yes here comes Matt Stephens in a little bit late now again this was the down mccracken is the running quarterback right now Stephens wanted to throw the ball successfully on first down to flipper Anderson him 30 to go in the half 15 nothing Arizona leaves [Applause] Stephens goes deep left side almost picked off again Danny luck it was looking for his first of the season Stephens tried to look lock it off he won't he knew coming to the line of scrimmage he wants to throw the ball to the left but the play-action fake is not fooling anybody because you CoA is not running the ball well if he can't run the ball well the linebackers aren't going to stay home and there is Daniel Lockett laying out trying to make the interception he really helped on the out route the outside linebacker get a fine job second down and 10 Bob Garibaldi is come in as a wide receiver now number 20 for UCLA [Applause] boomer Gibson number 44 makes the tackle on James Primus the NFL today tomorrow old buddy of mine Charlie waters will be in the studio at 12:30 Eastern Time ahem they have turned into Miami device the Miami defense that'll be discussed tomorrow Don Shula's having some defensive problems in the NFL and they Charlie waters all-pro few years up to a couple of all you helped 30 10 Stephens gets rid of it Fenella dropship their offense just is not running on all engines right all Pistons right now they everybody seems to be making a little mistake here and there the protection either breaks down or receivers not getting the right yardage for the first down and now what do you think Barcade is feeling like those two puns have been blocked after the last punt that was blocked Barcade and Terry Donahue had a long discussion on the sidelines he's got to be fairing for his life back there and this is gonna set up a good return by Arizona because I'm so concerned about the block they have the return on as a matter of fact they're a kill at the 40 pretty good downfield coverage by UCLA that's a 41-yard kick by Harold Barcade a return of four Arizona's got the ball back it's now time to present this week's Toyota Leadership Award to team players who've been singled out by their schools coaching and faculty staff for outstanding performance in the areas and team contributions academics and citizenship today's game leadership winners are Chuck Cecil from Arizona Chuck as a junior Business Administration major with a three point four two grade point average from La Mesa California and Dave Franey from UCLA dave is a senior economics major with a three point grade point average he's from Kansas City Missouri Toyota will donate a check in the amount of $1,000 to each school's general scholarship fund 933 to go first half Arizona David Adams spill behind the line by the nose guard Terry to be rushing yardage so far in the game remember the Terry Donahue said before the game we can't run on Arizona 65 for the Wildcats and 3 for UCLA they're giving up this Arizona defense 83 yards in the ground per game and they have been running the ball in excess of 200 yards per game and that Pat is really good the big difference been offensive ski it's the balance however on second down and he's going deep good coverage downfield that may be the good play UCLA knees marques Turner number 24 [Applause] [Applause] that was one terrific play by Markus Turner he read the quarterbacks eyes saw the play all the way to watch he goes up and catches the ball at its highest point takes it away from the receiver and then he'd has a nifty job with some downfield blocking you mentioned the UCLA defense really has done their job today as they did last week they played very very well Turner picks up a nice block the only disappointing thing here and had to get the clean block there and perhaps one more he may have scored because there wasn't anybody else out there and for the first time on first down McCracken is in a quarterback Matt Stephen stays on the bench he is the option runner boy first down it's been just just absolutely terrible for UCLA in this game so far and it was their downfall last week as well there's the good look at Brendan McCann McCracken for six beats real strong legs to break a lot of tackles fourth quarter back a hundred Smith said he would make a great running back there's no room at running back at UCLA but he's a great big strong quarterback want to get him out there in the option not a great throwing second down and six 811 to go in the half backs in the eye Gaston Green and Marcus Greenwood of the running backs now for you it's too much time now 25 second clock it expired well I'll tell you what there have so much trouble on offense you that's the last thing you want is a penalty for too much time I think it's one of those things you can really avoid here's James Springer Pat what do you think the significance is of this move now the Donaghy was made with his quarterbacks well I think at this point he wants to try to put some new life in his office and sometimes a backup quarterback to do that could just give you a spark the Arizona defense that doesn't know anything about Brendan McCracken doesn't even know really that he's got that kind of speed or option she's just trying to get his team to spot this part well they have gone to the option again and that rushed defense of Arizona Daniel walk at number 49 makes the tackle on Marcus Greenwood number 45 well I'd say well you play option quarterback you have to be strong and physical because you're going to take some hits watch Brendan McCracken number 12 as he comes down the line now he's trying to read Danny lock at the end of the line of scrimmage but one of the Hinkel number nine he said that really made the play on him before he even got to the end of the line of scrimmage as again very good penetrated defense familiar circumstance for the Bruins 1312 McCracken on the scrap being chased gets away from the potential tackle is knock down a 440 it'll be fourth down as boomer Gibson number 44 the outside linebacker makes the stop I'll tell you what even when you think you have a little breath of fresh air I thought my frackle again then able to pick up a first down there they just react the defense is so quick they can react and get there and stop you before we make the yard mark Barr Cape has had a long day's journey into oblivion today and he's on to punt again poor guy here comes a bit of a rush and look at the result shanked it off his right foot well you don't blame them I'm sure the coaches are telling him to get rid of the ball quickly I can't blame barking Arizona's got it back and they're in great field position ball at the 43 627 to go on the first half that has been dominated by the Wildcats of Arizona 15 nothing else we're in college football this afternoon top-ranked Miami leading West Virginia in the first quarter by a 14 nothing count Alabama leading at the half by 17 and three Michigan other yes Penn State came from behind to win and oh you and Texas are scoreless in the first quarter in Dallas first in 10 Arizona with a 15 nothing lead [Applause] [Music] Jenkins hands it off on the die play Chris Macklemore casino from Las Vegas and the other top ten scores will run them down for you Vanderbilt Feld Harborne 31 to nine that dies bunch off to a good start taking Arkansas scoreless Messiah and Iowa leading Wisconsin 7/3 don't forget Jimmy Nance coming up with the prudential college football report and act on it second seven were just under the six-minute mark in the first half of play from the Rose Bowl in Pasadena California [Applause] Nathan Adams to the 50 yard line [Applause] on this side of the ears my offensive line is really done a nice job here in the first half Alva check us to the left guard and Lionheart the left tackle really have control of their Manning and let David Adams a little little back who's five six kind of sneaked through but the surprising things to look at 318 pound right heart unbelievable ease they tried to put him on a die they they have them run the exercise by bicycle at lunch for 20 or 30 minutes and stay away from lunch table it look like he's doing a very good job of it isn't well see the comparison 277 to 240 that was the same problem UCLA's defensive line that last week Jenkins looking deep as a man open Derrick Hill caught it out of bounds must have been bobbing the ball well they they're in love with this guy though as a deep front boy isn't he fluid I mean he is so smooth when he's running them running his past routes and he catches the ball very fluid layer but I think he did bobble it here when you're running the ball and doing the kind of things that Arizona is doing it's so easy and all your offense kind of falls into place it's the same pass that he'll caught earlier you might have had possession of that one that look like that should have been a possession interception here's another phase of the game that Arizona is very good at rodriguez can punt the ball inside the opponent's 10-yard line lights the punted very high they've down what seven punts inside the opponent's 8 yard line this year and watch for Chuck Cecil down that down it the left footed kick very high not particularly deep and the catch is made a fair catch at the 17 yard line [Applause] UCLA needs to find some key to unlock the puzzle [Applause] that game of course coming up next weekend on CBS Boyd's Arizona leading at UCLA 15 nothing here and tomorrow in the NFL most of you will see Washington against Dallas those of you in the Southern California area will see the Rams as they visited Lana in a battle for the NFC West supremacy and Minnesota is up in candlestick to take on the San Francisco 49ers check the local listings for the game in your area tomorrow it begins with the NFL today on CBS formation Matt Stevens by the way is back in at quarterback drills the ball and Puckle Craig number 26 into the wild receiver spot pushes UCLA out to a first down at the 37 yard line this is the kind of play that UCLA needs to get out a ball to receiver why is on the move number twenty-six pockle Craig off the play action fake the slant pulled Chuck Cecil the strong safety up and Craig got right behind him he breaks a tackle there he's really got a big play but that's the kind of play to need on first down they don't need to try to go downtown get it all back on one pine fire to that game UCLA had 45 yards of total offense and again they'll throw on first down this is the game plan coming in catch babe nice catch by Anderson tune yes sir well he put held that ball up rather quickly too didn't he they've got something going here now at first he went outside to Craig and then he comes to Willie Anderson off the play action fake - Stephens gets a pretty good protection the ball is a little bit low but watch him go down and really lay out trap that ball magnet trapped at ball but he is trying to show the official that he did not travel he made a caught fell on the short hop at any rate it stands at the 45-yard Stephens rolls right nobody opened he'll have to hoof it another first down at the 34 well they have found a spark that and that's exactly what they needed just a couple of first downs to get themselves going now with 408 left here in the first half they're only down by 15 points if they can put seven on the board and perhaps going down 15 7 then you have a new ball game but it's very important I think for them to get a touchdown not a field goal here before half-time Neuheisel letting in Terry Donna you know what play has been called from the press box you know when you're on off that's at this part time of the game in the season when you've already lost one game in the conference you can let it all hang out in office do they mind so just have some fun and let it and really glasses gaston green look at the defensive line play and then the linebackers come up and make the pump Byron Evans my gas to green was just bouncing down the offensive line they're trying to find a little crease but there wasn't any he kept bouncing and bouncing and bouncing the Arizona defense really moved down the line of scrimmage laterally extremely well and then finally got to green ok well I have not seen College defenses the kind that can get the kind of penetration that Arizona's gotten this far today remember this UCLA team is still pretty the football team in law estimation that'll be a second down and ten three and a half to go in the first half Stephens looks deep fires deep man is up and ball was short intended Chuck Cecil got down and made the play on Willie Anderson boy no Chuck Cecil was the free safety on this plate Vern he is normally the strong safety but he really saved a touchdown had this ball been thrown a little bit farther Stevens could have let flipper Anderson run under the ball but watch he jumps up with his left hand just tips the ball out but he could've thrown that ball a little bit higher we're gonna get another look the left hand of Cecil playing free safety rather than strong safety the ball was definitely under prong that brings up a third and 10 foot back this time whit's for one of the few times by Arizona and Stevens has to get rid of it and the fans are bull that's a great play by Stevens in my mind he avoids a big big sack now it's fourth down I don't see too many kickers coming onto the field no hole butter or field-goal that's what I mean [Applause] looks like Donna you will go for it on 4th and 10 through a318 to go why because then who needs a touchdown on a field goal here [Applause] why to the right side back to in the eye five man rush again Stevens gets good protection goes left football is dropped for 21 Willie Anderson had it go right through his hands and remember last week Willie Anderson really just bobbled the touchdown pass against ASU and who knows what kind of game it would have been man had he caught stat fourth an eight situation and this is why UCLA lost last week and why they're in trouble today somebody has always seems to be out of sync top of the screen he pushes him off well pushes the defensive back off it's an easy first down the ball is well thrown I think he's worried about his feet but it obviously should have been caught and that's why he lost last week and why they're in trouble today that is the sixth time in the first half they have gone to Willie Anderson and they've yet to complete a pass 1st down and 10 you wanted to see this for Arizona wide left jaykins Adams you know little things like that you wonder how they change a complexion of a game you know they get the first down there perhaps they score a touchdown then it's fifteen seven now Arizona maybe this runs out the rest of the clock and you're down by 15 points I mean those are sudden little things but they can drive a coach crazy well Pat go back to your point when they started that last Drive they had to get something on the board and the very least they were then in field goal position absolutely now psychologically it's really a blown second down with 243 to go first half Arizona leads 15 zip second down and six Wildcats [Music] Jacob's Creek stream John hole and he's cut down good defensive play by Chuckie Miller number 37 well for the second week in a row I think the UCLA defense really has gone beyond the call of duty they have done everything they possibly can to put their team in a position to win Bruins call timeout and stop the clock with 222 to go so they're hopeful of stopping and getting the ball back Jerry Donahue prowling the sidelines his team defensively now facing an Arizona team that has shown a proclivity for running a drawn play on third and long suit if they have in mind a good five there's the drop way there's Adams and there's a first down at the 47 yard line and you absolutely called it the same play that ran earlier on third and eight situation and picked up the first down now UCLA to beat UCLA you have to beat their nickel packages and this time although they were just a regular 34 the draw play caught the by supply it prize it was overrun by the outside linebackers the inside layman made some good blocks and then David Adams just outran Chuckie Miller for the first down he keeps going and watch this five six triple threat going for the high jump this spring it was an exciting player great house is here now at first 10 to 16 to go in the half Jenkins flag is down Jenkins finds a receiver but can't complete the pass and that may be holding doesn't Jenkins seem to have a slow delivery yes he does he really takes the ball getting out of his hand takes a long way to get there of course his defense plays the way they have been this year he didn't have to worry about throwing too many passes does he that's spoke with him last night really has been feeling lousy all week long missed practice on Monday Michigan leading Michigan State 13 to 3 and Iowa now leading Wisconsin 7 to 6 and those two teams of course will meet next week it was just a year ago they went in ranked number 1 and number 2 current rankings have the Michigan Wolverines 4th and Iowa 10th and you'll see that game you'll see it next Saturday 11:30 a.m. Pacific time what a Michigan defense a year ago reminds me somewhat of Arizona's defense know how good that defense was for the Wolverines a year ago you know UCLA has been a dominant national team for years for eons Arizona hasn't and why they get a game against the defending Rose Bowl champs like this I think from a national perspective it means a lot to them absolutely and he deserves who national prominence because Larry Smith has done a remarkable job there in his 10 years 7th year at they've always been competitive against the best teams to tack ten atoms they try to draw play again this time they lose three Derrick Smith number 98 read it and it'll be third down and we're under the two-minute mark now the second time Eric Smith has made a real nice play today who Holtz a tough time a Notre Dame one-in-five Carney the field goal kicker of the Irish missed a field goal with 38 seconds left that would have given them the victory Larry Smith has Pat said now in his seventh year at the University of Arizona he's obviously found a home there want to see why take a look at the campus 159 to go in the first half third down and 12 now for the Arizona Wildcats back across midfield Chuck Knox whose mother is here at the game and his dad is flying down with the Seahawks to play the Raiders tomorrow's into the lineup number 33 the Wildcats of Arizona third down and 12 knocks with the blog Jenkins with the Claro ever catch his failed by Derrick Hill at the 35 boy it is so tough on a defensive line when you have a quarterback who can get out of the pocket but watching the bottom part of your screen Derrick Hill memories caught the ball going over the middle twice now and he's faking deep Dara Henley thinks it's going to be a deep ball just overruns it and then he goes up high to make the catch it's a very nice play by Derek Hill but set up by the deep pass the hill earlier and the old passes over the middle to Hill now let's see how anxious Arizona State is to get one more score on the board 137 to go Jenkins all day goes deep incomplete John Horton the intended receiver and James Washington defending and good read by James Washington that ball should not have been thrown by alpha James and he was double covered Washington the free safety number three there he was hurt all and didn't practice all week but it had he made an interception there when she had a chance to that again might have turned things around for UCLA that stops the clock with 131 remaining in the first half Jenkins is four of ten now throwing the ball and needs 12 yards to become Arizona's number two all-time passing [Applause] second down intent atoms or they've crossed him up with that drawl play a lot he is so quick David Adams and the thing about him even though he is small he is a very strong runner he can break tackles even though he only weighs 167 pounds watch him pop through David Adams again 5 6 167 pounds but as offensive tackles are six two and six three and about 280 pounds if you're a defensive linebacker or defensive safety it's really tough to see and boom he pops right through there and the safeties don't know where he is now Arizona has called timeout they want to stop the clock on third down and two with 103 to go and Larry Smith will talk it over now speak with Larry Smith this week he after his first year at Arizona he was looking for ways to win they were not successful obviously in his first years he was looking for ways to win he broke down UCLA films they were successful in Washington he thought the way to get himself an advantage in this conference was to spend a lot of time on the special TV pattern his team after the University of Washington and UCLA my game is 15 nothing Arizona leading 103 to go before half-time tomorrow the NFL today former cowboy Charlie waters will join River Jimmy and will McDonough in the studio they'll also take a look at the struggling Miami Dolphin defense and the Cowboys and Redskins to battered rivals going into one of their classic showdowns battered in the sense that they're both injured a lot of injuries for both teams all having more tomorrow on the NFL play and you see that Dallas príncipe team honey it's gonna be very close good I really do because the Redskins are in truth now Danny white probably won't play for Dallas Dorsett should be back for the Cowboys but the linebacker position passed already has become very very interesting maybe a dandy Terry Donahue wondering what in the world can his Balu post case trader here some of you will see the Rams in Atlanta tomorrow that important may have seemed NFC West showdown in Atlanta and others will see the Minnesota San Francisco games to check the local listings for the game in your area 103 to go in the half 50 nothing Arizona leads 12:04 and look what happens [Applause] he runs pretty well for a man of average height you know it really happened so often when you have a mix up in the back field the defense either overruns the play or somehow they just don't seem at a sync now watch Jenkins and Adams are gonna bump right into one another and Jenkins is gonna see him on his way there he says get going David and he does but the UCLA players really had over on the play reacted and the i-formation is allowed David Adams they kind of pick his way last year Arizona didn't run much of this I formation ran more split backs to the I formation as a taken advantage of Adams ability to find kind of some soft spots in the defense 86 yards on the ground for David Adams in the first half Jenkins on the roll that one's overthrown and incomplete in tentative Cristin McLemore let's take another look at Alfred Jenkinson's he redirects David atoms begin to get a mix-up in the backfield looks like Adams ran right into jenga's then he pushes in there with his right in ya go to left he says go left young man and he gets him off on his way that's good teamwork in there sure is horace greeley ed porter back go left young man Charles Webb is in now it'll be second down and eight 51 seconds to go timeout play again Adams looks for walk he helped us and get it now circles back and his dad as a 19 varnel Lake number 31 brought up with him and there's a flag at the 7-yard line heart stops 41 seconds to go UCLA defense has done a pretty good job defending the option play today of Arizona holding I'll tell you David Adams is an exciting planner does make some things happen even though he lost some yardage in this play but well played that Terry to me fought off a couple of blocks and forced Jenkins to pitch the ball before we want a good play by to me an old david adams decides he's going to redirect his field generally that's a bad play particularly down by the goal line when you're trying to get yourself in a position to get in the end zone I'm sure Larry Smith will have that conversation with him later holding was declined the story has become legendary in the Tucson area now when Adams came out of high school the coaching staff had a vote on whether to offer him a scholarship the vote was 8 to 1 against offering him a scholarship but proving the power of the headband the one vote was Larry Smith he's got his scholarship sounds like a South American election to me third down Arizona's three of three on Thursday on conversions in this ride Jenkins goes deep knock down Chucky's Miller made a real nice defensive play doesn't say what the UCLA defensive backs have played very well take a look at Chucky Miller number 37 who has been injured again the defensive backs we've seen Henley play well James Washington almost made a big play defensively here as Chucky Miller's time reads the quarterback jumps beautifully without pass interference knocks the ball down that's good play and that brings on Gary Costin for the third time today Costin has hit as you look at Chucky Miller costing his hips in 35 and 36 and this field goal Mountain time has been called Bruins call timeout and stop the clock with 17 seconds to go well they'll be a interesting half time for the Bruins I would think well the difference so far in this half I mine is flipper Anderson's drop on the fourth down and eight which would have put them in a position certainly for three points but more importantly with seven points now now down 15 enough in Tarragona me in my mind says to his team hey we've got nothing to lose now let's go out and really be aggressive let's get the ball in the air if he has to use McCracken some as his option quarterback I think could probably do that still Matt Stephens is the best thrower you're going to have to feature some pass in the second half while we've mentioned that UCLA has been an abysmal with abysmally slow starting team in the 80s in 83 they started off all three and one but look at the finish they finished with seven victories in 84 three and to start they finished nine and three and eighty-five to 1-1 they finished nine two and one and won the Rose Bowl but this year in this week it doesn't look that good and this has been the week the second week in October when they have at least in this decade turned it around but they still the really there are one big defensive play perhaps and maybe a block punt themselves a touchdown and then the right back in the ball game with a touchdown and a two-point conversion costume we'll try it from 36 yards out [Applause] kick his up good again he's three for three the freshman delivers [Applause] and psychologically I think that hurts you silly again to give you him three more points with 14 seconds left in the half and especially since it comes after their only offensive spark of the first half and then the drop that Pat alluded to by Willie Anderson sorry Donny has really had a tough time figuring this team out the chemistry we've talked to him in the last couple of weeks and it's surprising I mean generally a head coach has a feel for his team knows how to motivate them to push the right buttons and Terry Donny who's done a marvelous job of that the last four years but this particular team he said he began to worry about them even after spring practice last year he couldn't push the right buttons it's a funny chemistry on this team he says coming up at half-time will have the Prudential college football report scores of all the games going on around the country today we'll update you on the top twenty and other pac-10 encounters taking place out here that's coming up in 14 seconds half-time from the Rose Bowl Jeff valve are getting ready to kick off of a 19 who's a senior walk-on who is the long-distance field goal kicker for Arizona and the deep man again a Carnell late in the 31 at Darrell Henley number twos this would be Parnell lake [Applause] the scene with the sidelines it does get it up across the 20 but again a flag is down the offense really has to be still be a concern to Terry Dinah that have been to games this year the offense has not scored a touchdown they have not scored here in the first house a half obviously and another clipping call against UCLA second time that has cost them position outside the 20 and let's just take a look at the difference in the special teams the special teams either having got returned the ball out past the 20-yard line or when they have there's been a penalty on the other hand Arizona's blocked two punts get our score here's the call from James Springer [Applause] Gary Causton with three field goals the first of which was set up by an interception 35 yards gave Arizona 3 nothing lead and then the blocked punt by Chuck Cecil recovered by Griffin bucket then Mota la tackled Gaston green of the endzone costings has come back with back-to-back field goals and it's 18 nothing now with 8 seconds to go in the first half [Music] that should be the final play of the half kevin singly makes the tackle of gaston green half time and just before we leave you for a moment let's take a look back at larry smith steve's big play of his chuck Cecil's block of Harold Bart gates park and it was the left guard of UCLA who led the floodgates wide open punter never had any opportunity and that resulted in a touchdown by gropin Barker ball was kicked a couple of times inadvertently and toward Arizona's end zone and then gropin bunker number 24 after that kick finally fell on it and got the touchdown that made it a Tim nothing game and then shortly after the second blocked punt mata a Lay's tackle of Gaston Green gave Arizona a 12 nothing lead after the safety that's the end of the first half with the score Arizona 18 UCLA nothing will be back to the Prudential college football report after this message and a word from your local station it's bigger than half time Kent State and Florida Florida pouring it on today for their second win of the year in the Midwest Indiana and Ohio State were tied but the Buckeyes have scored 10 points in a row Kansas and Iowa state Kansas with a tendon f'ing lead no Jayhawks right now riding a three game winning streak other scores in the West Air Force and Navy Air Force leading by 20 in the fourth quarter Wyoming and Utah and Wyoming with a 7 point lead the youths are winless this year and they've given up an average of 49 points a game New Mexico and UTEP 14 the three the Lobos lead it in the second quarter and still the head of us here at halftime we'll talk with head coach Ted told her of unbeaten USC and we'll update that baseball playoff story of course more scores and highlights as the Prudential college football report continues here on CBS with results from around the country well the Irish of Notre Dame are off to their worst starts since 1962 and they lost it once again on a missed last-second field goal John Carney this time from 38 yards with 18 seconds to go he missed it in Pittsburgh holds on to beat the Irish and Notre Dame now 1 and 4 on the year Purdue and Illinois a late touchdown there a three yard run by Ray Wilson with a minute five to go won it for the Illini against Purdue Colorado wins their first game of the year they beat Missouri more trouble for widen hopper they're now one in four in the south North Carolina outscored Wake Forest and the Tar Heels look out for this team they're now 400 and 1 on the year their quarterback Johnathan Hall threw four touchdowns Virginia Tech and South Carolina 27 all tie Scott Hagler missed a 40-yard field goal for South Carolina with six seconds to go another heartbreak for the Gamecocks remember last week they almost upset Nebraska in the east Cornell over Harvard three to nothing and for Harvard that's the third week in a row now they've been shut out that's the first time it's ever happened to the Crimson once again in baseball the Mets with a ninth-inning win against the Astros 6 to 5 New York now leads in that best-of-seven series two games to one after the game brent musburger was there to talk with Darryl Strawberry of the mess Darryl Strawberry and Darryl Strawberry jr. that was a terribly exciting win by the Mets yes it was a very exciting win and we battled back we were down 4 to nothing but we had a lot of confidence bred we felt that we were going to come back in that ballgame but I'm just pleased the way things turned out for us and it was a big win for us and we look forward to tomorrow's ballgame you really can't hit left-handed pitchers three-run homer off a good one well you know Knepper is he's tough on all left-hander it was just a situation I was in and I was looking for a certain pitch and I got the pitch and I did what I had to do with it you think Dijkstra's Homer was out there oh yeah I feel good about it cuz when he hit it I jumped up and I was screaming I said that ball is out of here and you know Lenny he's not a home run hitter but if you make a mistake on he can't take you out the ballpark young man what'd you think of daddy's home run was it pretty good that was that exciting huh are the Mets gonna win this he's like Steve Carlton you don't want to talk to the press right now thanks Darrell all right Brian all right six to five the Mets win it they lead at two games to one and when we come back we'll talk with a head coach who's restored a former national power to prominence this season he's Ted told her of Southern Cal and you're watching the prudential college football report here on CBS where the scores continue from around the country CPS Sports presents college football sponsored by the heartbeat of America today's Chevrolet Nikolov white super premium taste and less filling beer and by the people of Rockwell International where science gets down to business we're back at half-time in the Rose Bowl in Pasadena weather UCLA band is just concluding their halftime presentation I'm Verne Lundquist along with Pat Haden and an 18 nothing Arizona lead at this point I don't know that I'm shocked but I'm a little surprised that I'm really surprised how well Arizona's playing past defense because UCLA really felt that they could throw the ball they could be successful they're on first down but the pass defense is really held up well for Arizona and in contrast UCLA simply has not been able to move the ball offensively they really have and they tried to throw the ball that came up with that early interceptions was iconic I think kind of shocked Matt Stephens that's tough as a quarterback to recover when one of your early passes is intercepted like that and Terry Donny who said they cannot run against Arizona he said it four times and he's right well they came into the game Arizona that is with a reputation well deserved it turned out for excellence in the kicking games and boy did it pay big dividends for them in the first half well you know the kicking game always starts with the head coach and he spends Larry Smith spends an awful lot of time Chuck Cecil number six who told us last night with a little smile on his face that he was going to block a punt today remember they blocked 22 it since 82 'no the left guard for UCLA should have stepped out and got in cecil's way and that ball would have been gotten away but it was easily blocked by Cecil then it was batted around while but now these are inadvertent kicks you cannot intentionally kick a ball and advance it into the end zone but those are inadvertent kicks and that's why it was a touchdown well that was the first and then there was a second on the next punt again from right up in the middle boomer and then Gibson and then Martin Rudolph number 27 right there hits it low the ball is popped up now Barcade the punter this guy has to be shocked at this point but again tremendous emphasis on that that put them in a position for another score well as a result they went up 12 nothing after the field goal there and then they got the safety from San Stan Monterey lay the ground game though I think in terms of Arizona's offensive perspective has really suddenly come on with the rush you look back at the last four years they haven't done that one on the ground well against the big four we're talking about UCLA and USC and Washington and Arizona State now today they have a hundred and four yards against a very good I think UCLA defensive front but this has been the the real difference in this Arizona team this year in the years past and play great defense play great special teams but all that done is throw the ball but now they can have balance they can run the ball and David Adams number two has been the key today 75 yards in the first half even though he's small we talked about his strength he's got good vision he picks his way through wholesale he breaks through tackles there he just kind of lunges through a couple guys there's two pretty good hits on him yet he still gains a couple of extra yards out of it and as a result Arizona's on top 18 nothing as we get set for the second half of play both teams have reappeared back on the floor of the Rose Bowl it was a 12 nothing score at the end of the first quarter Gary Costin has kicked two field goals UCLA by the way has the longest scoring streak in NCAA football they have scored in 171 consecutive games last time they were shutout was 1971 when pepper Rodgers was the coach here 38 nothing by Michigan coincidentally Arizona has a second longest scoring streak well their streak will be extended for sure we don't know what's gonna happen now Terry Donahue's bunch West Denton will kick off to open the second half number 28 takes a deep there he killed our great house in the deep man [Applause] here's the special teams at work again [Applause] up to the 43 yard line and James Washington makes the tackle and they set the tone and set the pace again giving their offense remarkably good field position take a look at Derrick Hill he can he's going to pop right through a crowd Derrick Hill as there's a little confusion early on when he's trying to field the ball but he's gonna pop right through here in the crowd and he breaks a terrific speed and we talked about how smooth he is as a runner I really like the way we can move around after he touches the ball we've seen him catching a couple passes and here returning the kick person to the house we can save excuse me bad first down from the 42 Arizona has the ball to open the second half David Adams well when it was a 15 nothing score we thought that UCLA was in need of a defensive Turner to get back they got that but couldn't capitalize and right now here's what's happened is we've started the third quarter and I think the first series is really critical each half the first series Arizona starts in very good field position but you see like the evens has to bow its neck once again forced them to punt perhaps maybe that fumble to get their offense a chance second down and eight branch McNeil is in one of the first times it's wide receiver Publica left Jenkins looks his way gets a good block fires the ball and it is caught branch McNeil's first catch of his career at Arizona sophomore from Carlsbad California in a fine catch it was because this was pretty good defense by the coverage men of UCLA there was not a whole lot of room for McNeil to catch this ball and give Jenkinson credit is this little sliver of light there the defender Henley tried to knock the ball down which again he's trying to come up with a big defensive play a one for the knockdown missed McNeal picked up the first down first down at the 44 yard line [Applause] Jenkins will flow on first down looks back left to his running back Adams bobbles in had dropsy and Odin he'd have an acre Oman old by and a penalty flag just went down it's interesting to watch Arizona here though they clearly are not gonna sit on the lead it's a holding call against Arizona some teams I think I see them get them get themselves in so much trouble when they get in the lead they try to sit on it but here we've seen Arizona come right back out be aggressive offensively and throwing the ball have had some guys wide open I like to see that here's the mark off of the penalty and James bring up five yards too many too much real estate there that's holding his pad set on the previous play the catch by McNeal Alfred Jenkins became Arizona's number two all-time passing 5000 and 91 yards Tunnicliffe divorce is the number one man McNeil and Chris Macklemore back in on first down in 20 from the 46 to me nothing Arizona leaves but play never got the unravel did it look like that Jenkins almost got his hand broken in there but still couldn't get rid of it a holding call now this is again the kind of thing that you see late needs to have a spark they've had a holding penalty early on second big penalty against the Arizona offense it's Craig Rutledge up looking over at the bench for instructions take it yeah I don't know why you need to wait on that decision gotta back that one up another 10 yards [Applause] I used to like being in a situation here to where they came again for support no Jay have not really had a chance to do of course too many Arizona punch yet today force a punt and give their offense a chance to get back get themselves in a position to score a touchdown again a few goals do they're no good at this point Derrick Hill brought the play in from the Arizona bench its first down in 30 with 1340 to go third quarter they draw on the ball play Adams doesn't get much this time so that will bring up a second down in about 29 what sure sometimes limits your options fat 1729 i specialized enough the ol second in 29 that's when the head coach hollers up on the booze and says what what plated we got he says you're on your own and I'll turn your back to you easy to call those 30 days Terry Donahue looking on really concerned because he can't get ahold of what kind of TVs back as set that over and over thus the last couple of weeks Jenkins back and the half hole now goes deep popped up clock intercepted it was Henley be there [Music] his defense Berg Washington in the first half came up with a new year just what the doctor ordered Emily goes in for the score a total of 54 yards baby Craney ought to try the extra point well the scoring streak has been extended to 172 games and let's look at it again James Washington really played very well in the first half he's going to come up with a big interception here alfred jenkins throw this ball throws this ball into a crowd the design player he gets out of the pocket but overthrows a receiver the ball gets popped up by Washington then he catches Valley's gonna take a hit right there the ball comes loose and there's opportunistic Hindley number two who runs the ball down the sideline I'll say I have really been impressed with the way those youth that UCLA defense has been coordinated they really do tonight they've been really been around the receivers today right position great speed touchdown UCLA moments ago after Darrel Henley had strolled through the Arizona endzone he went to the bench take that Charl Darrell [Music] and take that Matt Stephens UCLA on the boards and there's the man who's nothing there Darrell Henley alertly recovering the ball in midair after Washington was caught West End [Applause] and a nice tackle made on derek hill and UCLA is showing a little emotion farewell college football so much a game of momentum we seen a great defensive play by the youth of UCLA defense and then their special teams came out and did a job here and stopped the errors want to return team which has been so effective today you can see the emotion has just what they needed at this point the game the Arizona on the other hand they have rooted left UCLA back the game was to sloppy play on the first series a couple of penalties got themselves in trouble when they had a very good field position to start the third quarter timeout has been taken by James Springer the referee for an injury dereck Hill is limping out and already we've got an injury report from the bench of Arizona Jeff Baer home separated shoulder and probably will not be back for the remainder of the game Danny Lockett is suffering from fatigue which Gautam bunka who scored the first touchdown tore a knee ligament and is out for the year on his right knee that happened on one of special teams play and look at Arizona plunge right back Joe Pryor the fullback well when you defend Arizona you there's so much you have to worry about we've seen Jenkins scramble out of the pocket rollout we've seen option plays we've seen power football and now we see Joe Pryor the full-back up the middle there's only so many things you can stop no what strikes me Pat is that those who remember last year's game must be thinking a sense of deja vu in Reverse then UCLA jumped off to a 17 nothing lead and Arizona came back only to lose it 2419 here Arizona had the 18 nothing halftime lead there in Arizona offense as you see the measurement of just a pinch Shore the Arizona offense can put this crowd to rest here by just picking up a couple of first downs first down picking up a couple first downs getting the momentum back in there hands down the name the line of scrimmage like they did the first half but it was penalties in the first series which you know there's a difference when they came out they got the first down on the play to McNeal and then back-to-back holding calls just fired the interception by Washington in the corner which first down ten 1207 to go third quarter is the left [Applause] Frank fetch coffee number 92 the left defensive and senior out of Reseda California you know we talked last week about adjustments was coaches do at halftime Tom Haines and Bob feels the defensive coordinators for UCLA have made the change to try to get their people in gaps it gonna make some slants watch 92 bats caught blow up to your screen he shoots right in there the offensive tackle then until the back step opened the gates but that's fourth to get in to make the play that's good defensive adjustments at halftime second down and 12 top [Applause] I think it helped for Jenkins called the timeout there I didn't see a delay call that we did again another another sign that things are not working right for Arizona so the Wildcats call timeout Jenkins will talk to Larry Smith try and settle his team down they lead 18 7 Arizona Wildcats facing a second down at 12 after they used the timeout they have two remaining Alford Jenkins breaks the huddle brings his team up crowd of better than 50,000 gathered here at the Lowe's the first bath raus now bake at the door [Applause] Cornell Lake number 31 [Applause] and Greg Boland in the area the Cornell Lake is just a sophomore a zonie he's 6 feet 202 pounds but he's got 4 6 feet as an outside linebacker action returns kicks here you gonna see Jacob now Jenkins is delight delicately trying to throw this ball over Carnell Carnell lake and he takes a little bit too much often you can see leg jump up and swat the ball down there with his left hand tried to tried to feather it in there too much I think it's sometimes it's very difficult when a quarterback has received a wide open they try to do too much down at 12 fifteen and they'll run the draw again they've done it for 30 [Applause] again the UCLA defense has done its job they'll turn it back over to what is plus carbon and either offensive effort and now it is up to the office they have to step to the forefront now the defense has done everything that could possibly be acid that they have to take some charge and somebody's going to have to make a big play offensive it Rodriguez is back to punt third time today Darrel Henley who scored the UCLA touchdown a moment ago is back for eternity poor kick very high but not terribly deep [Applause] and again the special teams of Arizona shine Geri Beasley the linebacker made the tackle eighteen seven Arizona leaves [Applause] that's coming up tomorrow 1018 remaining third quarter in this one Arizona on top 18 7 and now Matt Stevens the senior quarterback back in the cockpit his team has not moved the ball with the exception of one drive late in the second quarter Terry Donahue looks on first and ten UCLA see if they pass again on first down no sir draw play and not for much Gaston Green number 44 tackled by Brentwood number 35 Arizona's coaches do a great job of telling their guys and forcing their defensive players to fight off blocks a lot of coaches talked about that with again it's one of those things they spend an awful lot of time on fighting off blocks and getting to the football before the game they had this drill or the defensive coach just runs over the side of the field and all of the defenders just chase him and surround him and jump up and down answer is it amazing the aggressive defense second down and seven eight straight back into the plat that's a one on two circumstance and a pretty good move by Mel for to escape the first hip and then he got tackled by the second rep would make a stop boy they'll form a nice play just to take up a yard or two now yeah you can see some athleticism here by though far offensive line here this time giving the Stephens an opportunity to look downfield first nothing there that he drops the ball over though far what you just gonna slip a couple of guys you don't think many full backs can do that before Ken quickly here goes Matt Stephens rolling left finds a man that I think was a very key play in this half they had 3rd and 7th Darrell makes the catch hangs on first down if they don't get the first down there all of that enthusiasm they've built up just evaporates you're absolutely right it and it seems to be the net Stephen seems to be a little bit more comfortable when he is rolling out and throwing the ball on the run fern we see him not be nearly as successful dropping back but this time he gets to the corner because he's a pretty good runner but he's got the wide open door out there for an easy first down but I think he just feels more relaxed on the corner of the defense so UCLA tries to build now on the emotion of their defensive unit they the first first down of this drive walls and 48 yard line here comes a reverse and trouble not yet almost got back to the line of scrimmage Willie Anderson tackle by chains to the bull under Texas offered one Nexus Tech leading Arkansas Razorbacks are undefeated and Washington State leads Southern Cal Washington State has one's kind of offenses they can really give you some trouble bottom option hi Iowa set up his showdown against Michigan next week five hunting today second down 11 the 49 yard line 18 to 7 Arizona leads UCLA four-man rush Stevens pretty good protection across the middle it'll be another third and long melih par makes the grab and Byron Evans makes the hip now that looked like it was going to be a real positive play for UCLA it looks like the defense was dropped off and he's gonna dump the ball off the milk bar is gonna catch it and run for eight yards but again they they react so well and again that they're faced with the same circumstance they had a minute ago third and long which is not envious last time Matt Stephens rolled out and picked up the first down in the past and route 39 8:20 to go third quarter 18 7 errors GLA goober Gibson dancing around see he's coming he is play faith good protection but it breaks down Stevens can't find anybody open and UCLA will have to punt you know that the pocket is breaking down for UCLA and Matt Stevens is not at all quarterback I think he feels an awful lot of pressure around and he cannot find his receivers because there's too much penetration by the defense now watch he tries to step up in the pocket but there's too many defensive men that are giving him some pressure right there's two guys two more up coming up to the middle nowhere to go they need to roll him out more and the meantime here is the punt taken by Derek Gill at the poor out of bound special teams for UCLA take the spotlight [Music] Randee Beverly downfield to make the tackle Arizona's got the ball back but deep in their own end of the field [Music] 7:38 remaining third quarter Arizona against UCLA one of the legends of our business is working up on the roof Rose Bowl Great Scott and up there with him is John Dockery John Thank You Vernon it is a very famous voice here at the Rose Bowl today a man who has done four Super Bowls he's in semi-retirement now but still doing cats on radio let's take a listen referee james springer says the ball is ready to play wildcats pin back at their own seventh the left hash mark Adams is the tailback there is the four by five formation two tight ends one wide receiver and there goes more than a yard or so it's gonna be second and long race Scott who can forget him the voice of the Green Bay Packers star $2 touchdown Green Bay burn I wish I could do it that well well I'd heard a lot of oohs I was a great Green Day fan as a kid and listened to an awful lot of race guys well plus he's a fine gentleman he and his wife living in Tucson now second year he's been working for Arizona second down and nine here that's 705 remaining in the third quarter [Applause] Adams going left knocked out of bounds now let's go to Jim Nantz in our New York studio specifically all right Vern Pat imagine if you could have thrown the long ball like this Jimmy Harbaugh the senior for Michigan 42 yards the John colas are look at the grab touchdown it is 22 3 Michigan third quarter let's go back to Vernon Pat's ok your turn all right Jimmy is no fair picking on me so I couldn't throw the long ball but I sure hand it off well the name horses behind me 35 655 to go a third quarter and I'm searching Adams not finding it was Arizona got it back you definitely fumbled I want to tell you there's so much more enthusiasm than on motion it plays so much more in college football than it does has been a terrific momentum swift shift here to the UCLA Bruins Adams of all he's carrying the ball in the wrong arm he's came the ball in his right arm and when he's running left to the outside he should have the ball in his left hand and that would have happened that brings up a fourth down and nine but I'm beginning to wonder how much you can ask if your defensive unit without the offense moving the ball and they just have not done so that is UCLA or Kratz try to block a punch well let's see if they have that in mind is Rodriguez is back seven yards deep in the end zone no the return is on short kick [Applause] and guess who I'd say the low kick the low punt by Rodriguez I think surprised both returned them might far number nine Trident is a real low punt now Rodriguez is normally a very high punter and Henley's normally the guy it's going to feel the punt but Mike far comes running over this confusion between the two of them the bad guys got a call the one off the ball pops loose there Arizona recovers that again a terrible terrible play for the Bruins and a first down out of the 41 Arizona's ball was 638 to go third quarter mark great house number 40 and again in the suits a search goes back to what Larry Smith told us the puck is the most important play in football it's the only play in football we gained 40 yards and here's Henley he's trying to wave off Mike farm but the ball was so low that far who's the short man felt that he should take so they both got a little piece of it but Chuck see still got motion second down and a second down and eight one third UCLA turnover - for Arizona [Applause] 6:05 to go 18:7 Arizona leads both problem will snap them Jenkins keeps fumble again UCLA gets it this time it's become bubble ball in the Rose Bowl [Applause] Arizona is trying to let UCLA get right back in this ball game I guarantee it might far feels a lot better right about now I guarantee you as well option play by Albert jinx is now he's gonna take the ball step away from the center let things develop Ennis slowly but he's holding the ball rather loosely Paul goes up gets popped from the backside the UCLA Bruins making recovery Jenkins is gonna have to secure the ball he can't let UCLA Oh Kayla any team get back in the ball game when you're dominating like Arizona has the ball at the 48 554 to go third quarter and Stevens will flow on first down maybe Sam Mihaly again what daily again is the momentum crusher for Arizona and that is all the way back to the 42 yard line second down and 20 UCLA unable to take advantage a field position and emotion provided by the defensive unit thus far [Applause] Stephens will try and hit the 60 yard bass as a man with a joined by five Paco Craig and a flag is down it's right around the holding area of the field [Applause] Matt Stevens at only over to him he can throw that boy he's got a strong arm hit that one and it is holding let that one go Farkle Craig didn't have his man beaten as well [Applause] they call that sends them back again again the opportunity - puts the offense in a position once again the offense not see where they not being able to capitalize on great defensive play Terry Donahue two days ago in his office said three problems on offense offensive line hasn't worked well Matt Stephens has not been hot running backs have been hurt Stephens right side him complete and Harrell barkeep won't have to come on in front that was intended for the tight end Derek Tinnell UCLA is missing by a yard or two and again that is the difference that that ball is thrown inside maybe a yard Tinnell has an opportunity to catch the ball mark eight for punts for a thirty nine point eight average that's discounting the two that have been blocked and here comes the rush again Hill at the seventh nailed up high at the 16th and Arizona gets the ball back first this is one of the key matchups in the pac-10 today elsewhere Washington State's still leading early over Southern California and Pullman Arizona State having a tussle with Oregon Chris Miller the quarterback up there a fine quarterback from Oregon California leading Oregon State in the second quarter and later today Washington and Stanford coming into the phase play Southern Cal on top Arizona State a half game back Arizona really a half game back as well along with Stanford and UCLA and in first down in ten arrows art Greathouse tackled by Frank batch Gogh well you know Vern if if the offense is not going to do it for UCLA the defense has done their job it's gonna have to come from special team so I would like you'll have to think that you have to begin to think about trying to block a punt they blocked the punt last week against Arizona State Randy Beverly did and the office really has not been able to take advantage of some great field position here in the second half and time is winding down in the third quarter for 20 remaining right now keep going second down Greathouse out near the 25 a yard short of the first down Eric Smith number 98 made the tackle great house freshman at 97 yards 2 weeks ago against Colorado boy he gets up a good head of steam here they get him deep in the I formation he's just a straight ahead runner but but allowed him to do that we was 7 yards deep and by the time he got the line of scrimmage he and I'm very much a full head of steam is that big Arizona offensive line [Applause] and to [Applause] Great Houses stop [Applause] Doug Klein number 48 the linebacker sophomore from our Vedic Allen Colorado made the tackle now here's the situation again where I say UCLA may have to consider blocking upon because their offense has not done they haven't tried yet either really happen that's exactly right really haven't brought 10 min and what Revis has not been terribly effective to play though he's got a great average so again the defensive unit of the ball Arizona's offense seems to have Lawson spark Bruins played good short yardage defense a week ago as well you're gonna see a goodly line surge by penetration see two or three Bruin jerseys in the line of scrimmage and that allow the linebackers really to make the play good good play by the down man here is Rodriguez and here come the Bruins don't quite get there but they came with nine men Henley makes the fair catch going for 44 yard line well he made that catch understand the rest to him and up again from one of his own players at the conclusion of today's CBS sports college football broadcast Matt and I will be participating in a 16 year tradition selecting a Chevy Most Valuable Player of the game from future the team's Chevrolet donates a $1000 scholarship to the general scholarship fund of each school 2:35 to go third quarter Verne Lundquist Pat hatin John dr. Matt Stephens quarterback since one man into the pattern on the rollout and is successful well the rel Arizona have been so successful rushing the passer this entire season in today it's one way to try to avoid the big rush by Arizona's get Matt Stevens Stevens on the corner we seen him complete two passes now two out routes when he's got to the corner and this was part of UCLA his game plan was to work to the wide side of the field against mute off the defensive back number 27 there to pick up easy Pat easy first downs on out routes see the stats on Stephens go today a second down officially one yard UCLA across midfield where they have spent most of this quarter [Applause] and the ball is at the 43 that should be enough to move the chain Steven seems to settle down a little bit of this half again I think the key that we've just talked about is him getting on the corn the deep inside I think he just felt a little too too much pressure because Mattel a and they've been locking - those guys have really been all over his Jersey all day all day long one thing log innings have been formed the defensive cuts down the defensive rush first and ten UCLA one to go going on first down Stephens all the wells the UCLA first down Brentwood made the tackle and that time he put it on the clothesline and you have to give Matt Stephenson credit because he's a mentally tough young man he's had some duress this year against Oklahoma s interests even here today but he's still fighting hard that's what college football's back about trying to fight and get yourself a team a chance to win he drills the ball into it Carl Terrell and I'll tell you what I like his his stamina manski was when he's hanging in there another of a series of 15m quarterbacks here Stephens throwing on first down again short man James Freeman tailback Bruins showing as much life now on this Drive as they get once before at the end of the first half whenever the opening game was short passes to the backs and now they're doing it again because they've been able to get the ball downfield to the wide receiver who just saw Darrell catch one now the linebackers have to drop a bubble the deeper that you drop the ball off throw back [Music] the third-quarter in the entirety of this period has been played within a 50 yard area second down and three UCLA that client won without much success and be third and to Byron Evans number 48 makes the tackle on James Priebus okay this is third and two they have been running the wishbone this weekend unless we do comes McCracken in to run it they have two chances here because really they have to score a touchdown so you're going to see two chances at a first down I believe there's McCracken his patio set wishbone formation [Applause] they tried the first option and I don't think they made it but I want to tell you what though McCracken was open on the outside was he ever if he pulls the ball back he's around the corner 4:15 again I believe if they did not make it they definitely had to go for ball is spotted about a yard short of first down the quarter has ended it'll be fourth down when we return so Terry Donahue will have a minute or two to consider his options will return to the Rose Bowl in Pasadena California after this message and a word from your local station [Music] Danny Lockett who may be the best athlete on this area book Arizona the fencing team has missed most of this half because of fatigue he was just reinserted into the ballgame for this fourth down play to begin the fourth quarter now he's in there's one of the schemes and Larry Smith is using and on the UCLA prospective Pat Haven Matt Stephens is back in on the fourth one which is a little bit unusual because they want to use McCracken on short yardage situations where they use the wishbone so maybe UCLA in this particular short yardage is not going to go to wishbone there is Stephens fourth down and one I think they might pass it we're the passing formation with split backs play fake Stevens as a man open [Applause] premise number 23 first down at UCLA is actually nil follower that's right the pullback came out of the backfield terrific call by UCLA great play action fake by Matt Stephens and watch how calm he is the packet pocket because he is gonna get a pretty good rush there by Brentwood throws it off his back foot foot but he is wide open l4 is and that is a terrific ball and again keep the momentum going for UCI it was far instead of premise he stays in on first down [Applause] play fake again Stephens off-balance throw is incomplete did a wise thing just got rid of it avoided the sack [Applause] let's recap how the scoring has gone thus far tossed and opened with a field goal 35 yards and Cecil Vodka Pont recovered by broken bunker for a touchdown 10 nothing Arizona Monta la tackled gas decreed for a safety 12 nothing Boston then kicked back-to-back field goals to make it 18 nothing at the half and Daryl Henley returned an interception to make an 18-7 rizona has not given up a point in a fourth quarter of this season Stevens may be changing the play shifts back into the eye and they trotty ones over left guard milf are for not much to tie up this ballgame they're going to need a field goal and a touchdown and a two-point conversion third and they obviously would rather have the touchdown and a two-point conversion first but the important thing here is on third and about what nine is to not turn the ball over how about in terms of where you look you like the tight end maybe inside the 20 they would like to use Derek - now number 81 third and nine [Applause] looks at the flat fires into double coverage to nail [Applause] and slides into the padding there is the tight end Derek Tinnell we're a little out a nut pattern they wanted to go to him all the way but he was what not well covered that the situation it Stevens if you have more time you can come to a secondary receiver but Stevens was under duress here he he fakes the out patent and then he's going to turn up but guru boomer Gibson who's a linebacker is making the coverage and then twenty seven mark Rudolph tips the ball it's a Rudolph has really played well tonight he's the man they thought they could pick on Rainey is on to try the field goal first points to be given up by Arizona this in this quarter this year from 29 yards out it's good yo muhfuckin [Music] [Applause] brainy connects at UCLA's within eight it's 18 10 Arizona sponsored by piccolo blight super-premium taste and plus filling beer the people of Rockwell International where science gets down to business and by RadioShack a division of Tandy corporation I believe this was roughing the kicker on Arizona watch Franey after he catches at his left leg he gets rolled in to remember the roughing the kicker penalty is really there to protect kickers from injuries like that that can occur I shouldn't believe that should have been a penalty Arizona may have gotten away from one here's how a local ASCO who has been kicking off in this half and it's a short kick taken by the Wildcats they're a kill out to the 30-yard line UCLA did not get the touchdown but at least they got something out of that defensive effort and they did put together pretty good Drive then pass that's exactly right for the first day time today the offense led by Matt Stephens right there had put something together put three points at least on the board now the defense can do its job one more time they give themselves a chance to at least to tie the ballgame and the Arizona offense hasn't been present in this half they much at all [Applause] somewhat lethargic first down stuff knocks number 33 Tim Waller made to stop there Burnham he well he played just sensationally last week and again makes stop there knocks and forced the son of the Sea Hawk coach whose dad will be landing at the tough dad used to coach me Chucky not used to come without practice was about he told me yesterday he remembered you when he was four second [Applause] Jenkins looks Pop's it out that's got to the first down at the 45 Derrick Hill again that's what the Arizona offense needs again is to put together a couple of first downs against what has been a real good UCLA defense the second half give their defense a break as they rest they out cut really has been a boom there against both teams Arizona's been a team that not as a passing game has only been able to take advantage of throwing the ball to the outside this year they did it against Colorado a couple of weeks ago and then earlier in the year against Houston Jim Lewis when he comes in as an extra wide receiver for Arizona on the first count of 10 14 18 to go on the ball port and Rob at the 38-yard line Bryan Jones number 42 would set this sack up with terrific coverage back there by the you set UCLA secondary jaqen truly has plenty of time to throw this ball but then Brian Jenkins as a freshman just comes bursting through with a great burst of speed to put the stop on Jenkins but it was a coverage that forced to sack a second down and 16 now for Arizona that is second quarterback sack you see always defensive backs really have done the job today a 1 second and 16 see how they operate on this boy [Applause] Jenkins mob tip gotta be for way short of the first down by Jill choir this time it's Cornell Lake how John Dockery has made his way from the roof of the press box down to the Arizona sideline that's good under John right now and burn you burn you and Pat was talking about momentum will Chuck Stobart the offensive coordinator for Arizona gathered his entire offense together and said gentlemen you know what you're doing exactly what UCLA did against Arizona State last week you're wearing down you're fading you can't have that we must put together an offensive drive and keep our defense off the field see if they're gonna do it and if they're gonna do it John they've got to do it on this play because they've got a [Applause] eight point difference 1225 to go in the game [Applause] jenkins incomplete [Applause] intended for Kim Lewis and Jenkins on the ground courtesy of Jim Waller [Applause] okay this defensive line who's been on the field for so long is still coming after the quarterback Waller number 66 who played just very well the first half hits him put his little push to let him knew that he was there but again the defense has done their job turns it back over the offense Ruben Rodriguez is on to punt Daryl Henley the deep man sixth time that Rodriguez is kicked to Daryl Henley 12 19 remaining in the game that is his best kick of the day in me at the 11 and gets it only as far as the 13 yard line he nailed that one Arizona has the lead but UCLA has the ball in New York three scores from the top ten that will surprise you Oklahoma annihilating Texas as they start the third quarter Fred Akers as you've known is in trouble at Texas Arkansas with five minutes to go is trailing at home against Texas Tech the unbeaten 8th ranked Razorbacks in trouble likewise for USC it's just now half time at Pullman 17 to nothing the Cougars lead the Trojans let's go back to Vernon Pat's ok Jimmy that is a shocker Jim wall and steam though of course tied Arizona State a couple of weeks back 21 all we'll really complicate things that little Bruins team has the ball first down 10 at the 14 yard line trailing by 8 [Applause] first down deep right side catch made at the 29-yard line Willy Henderson grabs this one in front of bun Rudolph this was their game plan coming in throwing it to flipper Anderson to the wide side of the field he's at the bottom of your screen now again the out cuts is what they've been successful look on the cushion that he has on Randolph Randolph is concerned about his deep speed backs off it's funny a room to catch the out round Willie Anderson a junior from Paulsboro New Jersey first down 10 at the 30 11:45 remaining Bruins trail Stephens safety valve pass flag is down wipe it out bring it back after premise makes the catch that's a shame they had a nice little play they're going to premise and they worked this combination a couple of times Vernon when they've thrown the ball to an outside receiver would come right back and throw it into a back cream has had about eight yards but it's all for naught okay you've played this game most of your life you explain to me how we can have two halves of football of such diversions you know I think part of it is just that from UCLA standpoint for example is that Matt Stephens just seems to be looser I think he realizes it we were down 18 19 and a half I'm just gonna go out and have some fun it's my last year I may not be playing much football out to my career's my college career is over so let's not be a little bit more pissed and have some fun he seems much looser to me first and 20 from the 20 18 10 might be audible draw play at the 22 Prix mrs. tackled by James DeVoe number 38 if James des Beaux does not make that tackle this is a very big play nice ball handling by Matt's team is a good call on a long situation it's a little draw the remember they've run up so much play action where Stevens has kept the ball but he runs back side big hole there and James Duvall the defensive back and a good good stop otherwise he kicks up another 15 yards makes it a second down and 18 clock shows 1050 remaining in the game and he lines up now to the left side again the play fake Stephens the left side single coverage that's a footrace if he doesn't drop it it's a touchdown Paco Craig number 26 17 caught it tucked it and ran and now the Bruins with 10:29 remaining in the game Pat do they go for one or two well they have to go for two here and they've got two two-point plays they've got a man in motion when they try to hit him a flanker back who is in motion the second one they just have a tailback pass both blood type of routes but they move the ball to the left hash mark which are allowed to do this is for the time two wide receivers wide right one is widely laughs the green will be the primary receiver here he's the motion man [Applause] knocked away change the bowl batten it down it was intended as pants said it would be for Gaston green we've talked to a tearing down to you about the two-point played before someone could take a look at Paco Craig on the touchdown this is a Boyd kick because the ball is hanging in the air a long time and Craig is open for a long time he's wait wait wait then he sees Cecil trying to make the play now see so probably should have just tried to make the tackle there and that allows brain to go all the way for the score but to say well that's concentration when you know you're open the ball is almost like a punt you know a defensive man is coming after you the ball actually really may have been tipped by Chuck Cecil it is it's terrific concentration my friend it shows a pretty good speed he's a Jovian from Riverside California Terry Donahue got to be feeling a little bit better his team has come back down 18 at the half they have sports unanswered points velasco's kick bounces [Applause] it was fumble the cover recovered by Arizona for this second half has really been a foul-up of the Arizona team particularly their offense our office really has not done much and you wonder now Pat as Larry Smith gets ready to to call this play his Arizona team has not done traditionally what UCLA has accomplished these seniors on the UCLA team have been in the circumstance many time I don't know that Arizona's kids have been well there's no substitute for that experience in these UCLA teams and veteran team I'm very much a senior team have been oh they played in four straight January one balls first wild guess David Adams the senior five-six tailbacks filled for a gain of two let's take another look at the two-point play Terry Donahue said that he was going to sin Gaston Greene in motion and try to get the ball to him on a roll out but he was really well covered by James to beau it was really no no crease at all and Greene was not open it raises an interesting question about going for two points in that conversion with ten minutes left in the ballgame I still like the call myself but he could have easily a the point I kick well I was thinking of the time on the clock but of course they're gonna need the I think it's live and off left side especially the way the UCLA defenses suddenly quit and I think that certainly has something to do with their play selection the defense has really risen to the occasion the second half and it's been the adjustments by UCLA's defense in the first half they were controlled at the line of scrimmage in the second half as UCLA defensive front has been in the gas they find the gaps and he penetrated and had disrupted the rhythm of the Arizona offense Arizona's total offense in this half 49 yards UCLA has 126 with 70 18 cause Stevens to pray third down 622 Jenkins gets rid of it that's a first down John Horton number 86 the senior from Tucson tackle by Marcus Turner boy that's a nice play for the Arizona team there's the UCLA basketball team Reggie Miller right there little boy can he shoot the debate continues who's better Rhett - your assistant Cheryl that's Reggie who is an all-american at UCLA big first down there for the Arizona offense on a Thursday [Applause] 8:40 remaining in the game first down again good protection for Jenkins pudding receivers are covered he loves it out of the catches made [Applause] UCLA [Applause] [Applause] for the this is a great athletic play to catch the ball by Derrick Hill and a free patrol under jaikant Eagles up again good coverage to get Chuck Miller there all day long we have seen Hilton I really hold the ball panel loosely that comes right out of his hands that looked like he was trying to change hands in a big chunky Miller number 37 we made the recovery it was Chuckie Miller and the Bruins trailing by two getting back with a 28 to go at the 44 yard line [Applause] right a slip-up where they give the pullback it works for about five yards as Nell far plunges over the block of his Center turnovers have really been the difference here simply here in the second half Arizona has had three of them this one putting UCLA a very good field position remember a field goal will put UCLA out on top if you just joined us it was 18 nothing Arizona at the half it's now 1816 and the Bruins have the ball second and five [Applause] mail back door flow Gaston Greene doesn't get anything another in a seemingly endless array of third down and long for UCLA UCLA this fourth quarter has had some success on third and five and six type situations actually throwing the ball to one of the backs out of the backfield freeing this is caught one and we would have thought one as well bar caught the big one on fourth down at the right to a fourteen on third down conversions fake the draw fired out caught first down at the 32 well senior from San Diego California but tremendous cushion there by Martin Rudolph number 27 on Doral there's plenty of room there and it was third in five you cannot give this much cushion to a receiver because this is an easy easy catch you don't even see rudolph coming into the picture toll very very late action 7:15 to go in the ballgame UCLA with a fresh set of downs to his right get off and try to find room at right tackle gaston green runs into Byron Evans after a gain of a couple did you know on this drive UCLA the East has gotten something and the rushing game on first down in the first half they got absolutely nothing here this is the second time on first down they've run the ball this time they've picked up about three yards the last first down they picked up four yards rushing the ball gaston green with 15 yards on 13 carries to get his underscore what you said second down and six 6:35 to go in the ball game 1816 he asked him Green goes left cuts it back right and again we got a third down boy Dana Wells made the tackle [Music] [Applause] we want to welcome you those of you who've been watching Michigan and Michigan State that score 27-6 in the fourth quarter our score at halftime was Arizona 18 UCLA's em I'm ver Lundqvist along with Pat Haden and John dari we have 604 remaining after the third Arizona turnover of this half UCLA has the ball with a third and six from the 28 trailing by two and Matt Stephens balls timeout and it gives us a chance to catch our breath and bring those of you around the rest of the country up to date let's say go back and recap how this game has evolved costing of Arizona open with a field goal to make it 3 nothing Chuck Cecil of the Wildcats blocked the kick recovered the end zone for a touchdown 10 nothing after another block kick stand Mountain la makkal Gaston Green for a safety to make it 12 nothing Arizona then back to back constant field goals 36 and from 35 yards out made it 18 nothing at the half and all of a sudden Vesuvius erupted here in Southern California Darrell Henley picked off a fumble after James Washington had intercepted a pass returned in 54 yards for a touchdown 87 David Franey kicked the 29 yard field goal to make it 18 10 and then Matt Stephens found taco Craig opened down the left sideline 78 yards on the pass from Matt Stephens to make an 1816 that was with 10 minutes he some seconds remaining Stephens went to Gaston Green on the drive to the tie two points it was knocked down by James the bull Arizona got the ball on the kickoff but fumbled but they're enjoy his hit Chuckie Miller recovered and the Bruins now have the ball and that brings you up to date third and six from the 28th on the fringe of field goal range [Applause] they running they run it that's Gaston green go UCLA CLA has not had a big play out of their running attack in two weeks gasps in green even injured most the years a man who can provide that tremendous speed from gas to green he picked his way here this was supposed to go over a right tackle but he picked his way cut back which is usually unaffected uneffective up against Arizona's defense but then just kind of show us the determination and broke some tackles but the amazing thing to me here Vern is this offensive running attack has not had a big play all year until Gaston green really needed it what a great call on third and long first down and goal UCLA from the tail to step drop lob pass climbing play incomplete [Applause] awfully tough throw-and-catch to make I think flipper Anderson right through the middle your screen up r83 he's against James to vote can he push they're out of bounds that push but he's fading out of bounds now if he catches the ball and bring gets one foot in it's a completion but of a defensive back pushes him out that still should be a completion but I think really he would not have come down in bounds Oh second down and 10 [Applause] out right side touchdown boys gaston green with a great run and this incredible comeback continues the UCLA with a four point lead there they were going for they're going for two point play here again burn though we saw the first one where they had to try to get gas to green on this other two-point play what they're going to try to do at least what they told us they tried to get a back out of the backfield now the percentages really only 35% three quarters play fake Matt Stephens man is open Marcus Greenwood - - plays design this week he's had an opportunity to use their boat [Applause] letting take a first look at the touchdown by Gaston green who's really been stopped all day long by a very good Arizona defense his coach told me he thought gas was down a big game today bothered by injuries tremendous fee but what's the cut here and then he just runs right through the Jackals yesterday Manistee the cow or you can run right through people and that's just what he did here to get the endzone and now the two-point play where again Marcus Greenwood number 45 off the play action fake out of the backfield Stephens Rowley right he was wide open early and he really had a wait for that ball as a good good concentration by Greenwood 24 unanswered points by UCLA in this half in New York the upset of the day at Arkansas Texas Tech 17 to 7 as the Razorbacks lose for the first time that tech defense had allowed 151 points in their last three losses today they hold the Razorbacks to only one touchdown let's go back out the Vernon pass okay Jim Nance Thank You 536 remaining Larry Smith and concerned coach a billion at halftime with his team was up 18 huffing and here's the script kick that goes out of bounds that'll draw a late retreat yeah I took him a while I couldn't get ahead of his back pocket where was the handkerchief for those people who joined us a little bit late at the Arizona special team they've just been phenomenal today and all day although the difference in the second half has been momentum it's all been in UCLA's favor well it started with those of you who were not with us as UCLA defensive team played very very well in the third quarter but the you see there's the illegal procedure called the UC elephant the LA offense couldn't capitalize and then finally after Daryl Henley ran the fumble in after interception by James Washington to make it 18 7 Matt Stephens the senior quarterback ignited the UCLA offense their defensive team continued to hold and force turnovers and boom-boom-boom remember to UCLA the defending pac-10 champions played in four straight January 1 bowls a senior team many of these players have been in this type of game before they've used a fifth game of the season really at the springboard as the second half of their season to really play unbelievable football in the last number of years in the second half of the year so I guess it's not too surprising UCLA's come back it seems like a month ago we were talking about the possibility of UCLA being shut out in this game they have the nation's longest scoring streak now at 172 games we'll kick it off again 24:18 with 536 to go what a misjudgment art great house has it though and is within an ankle tackle of a huge game let's go down to John dungaree for an update John Thank You ver net that last conversion Matt Stephens came off the field he was holding his hand he took his shot in the chin he told the doctors to get away from them he was going to finish this game and finish it well first down in 10 Arizona in this half the Wildcats of Arizona have been held the 46 yards UCLA 178 and there is the scoring all Arizona first half all UCLA in the second first and 10 Wildcats Alfred Jenkins is the quarterback [Applause] still as time and a man is wide open and the catch is made at the 44 as Ellen horses the senior and that's a terrific catch by a horse because that ball took so long to get there he took a look at the big defense you're gonna see him look back Alfred Jenkins gets to the outside which he has done pretty well today his balls in the air and off a long time Horton you gonna see him look back to find out where the defense of the man is and then he's going to keep his one foot in as he stretches out to catch the ball and that's terrific concentration by horn that's a big play first down at the 44 523 to go every game foot packs his five two wide receivers white and one left not bunch of the lush provided by the Bruins and a diving try at the 30 is incomplete there a kill [Applause] well this has been an extraordinary ballgame in the first half it was all ears on special teams offense defense Larry Smith's team with an 80 nothing lead UCLA though Pat traditionally has used this week in the season to start their surge and Terry Donahue may get orator of the year for whatever he said at halftime lady make some defensive adjustments that we talked about and defensive line I've been a lot more people on gaps has had no rhythm offensively second in ten Jenkins left side again incomplete intended for John Horton again [Applause] that she now is attended to Vince Lonnie the tide in it the first time we've certainly seen Arizona try to get the ball to the tight end Lodi he was open just overthrown there a bit by now for Jenkins II he's passed thrown a couple of balls over receivers hence jenkins for the day now is 10 out of 23 for 100 yawns third and ten five twelve to go and this crowd of 51,000 is boring he'll be Jenkins pursued he's most dangerous when he runs and that could be enough for the first down we'll see where the spot is I think they marked it short the added dimension of Jenkins he's a big guy six-four 218 pounds and been feeling lousy all week like we talked about had the flu didn't practice a whole lot but very very close to the first down it's short fourth down Jenkins has gotten the ball downfield a number of times today to his wide receivers has not viewed the tight end much boy this is the second time we have seen Jenkins be able to avoid a rush and get up the field and take that and pick up a big game for his offensive unit now his fourth down fork and a foot the tailback is five six 170 pound David Adams six-four and towers over it they give it to the full-back up over the top Chris McLemore number 20 and he's gone at the spotless when the official gave him the first down [Applause] there's the indication Macklemore is senior from Las Vegas I'm not a big fullback dive play I think it's better when you have a lead blocker when you're trying to go over the top here but they quickly give the ball to the fullback and the right guard areola frank areola really was the one who had the surge that allowed McLemore to pick up the first down first and ten from the 34 yard line [Applause] come back as the lead Jenkins looks deep Bob short David Adams at five six a hundred and sixty seven out of balance with another Arizona first down inside the 20 I want to tell you that was a great impromptu play by David Adams because he was not supposed to be there he was supposed to be out in the right flat you're gonna see him after the play-action fake now he's supposed to go on the right flat but he sees all the UCLA linebackers and so he decides he's in go the other way and Jenkins is tall enough to see him cuts back in a saucepot the defense it picks up a first down that's a big play by Adam amazing path this is the first wife the Wildcat offense has showed in his head they've got a first in ten now draining by six with 3:45 to go the bush so as the wide receiver John Porter and that will cost Arizona five he's a little anxious there John Horton number 86 in the slot there you think he was that's usually a key that's as a dead giveaway first and 15 again they need the touchdown to win the ballgame time very much a factor now with 3:45 and obviously the extra point to first down 15 Joe prior back into fullback for Arizona 24:18 UCLA leads slips lets it go caught by the tight end Vince Lonnie that's the second time they've got her yeah the first time he's made the grab the second time he has did wide open it was set up Lodi was set up there because they've been throwing so much there outside receivers into the half pack David Adams out of the backfield [Applause] Macklemore will run the play in Albert Jenkins for those of you who have not been with us for the duration of the game has had a virus most of the week and lost 11 pounds and it was horrible last night if he would play to them second down on the 16th one they're in kill number 82 emotion they plugged the right side jenkins pulls up with the counter pass and throws it away Albany had him wide open he had him wide open he had a drill if he just leads him along the baseline back there that's an easy touchdown it's a difficult role though he's rolling to his right and has to throw back but John Ward's gonna come back toward the the inline the endzone line and he's running straight down and he leads him at six points elsewhere around the country Miami rolling over West Virginia is expected Alabama wins again Michigan has defeated Michigan State 27 to 6 Penn State came from behind to win its game and Oklahoma will win over Texas third down and eight from the 16 yard line past David Adams right open cuts down Arizona Wildcats Derek hill [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] just incredible and Gary cost in the pressroom Santa Ana the lead again [Applause] sensational call by Larry Smith in the offensive staff of Arizona one of the things UCLA has done the second half has been really aggressive on defense we've got a lot of people on the ball one way that takes on the aggressiveness away it's come up with some sort of trick play like this it looks like the option which he had runs successfully in the first half and Derrick Hill who had light up as a wide receiver just spent a slips behind Franklin Rutledge the strong safety for the easy touchdown by the terrific hall really a metal look and David Adams again the top of your screen is number 82 Derrick Hill he comes down that he's gonna pretend like he's blocking on the safety and then slips behind ruff that she's open by ten yards Adams had one of those last year as well that's a senior to a sophomore five 6-2 6-3 Derrick Hill with a touchdown Constans extra point and Arizona goes 73 yards in nine plays almost doubling their previous offensive output of this half is all defense pretty much the first half than the offense has come to life here in the fourth quarter David Adams got the touchdown toss first in his career 25:24 327 to go and Jeff Baldur's senior walk-on will kick off of the Wildcats [Applause] Darrell Henley's number two a double-team drives him back at the 23 yard line led by Chris Singleton number 87 watch the hit that Henley is going to take it you can see of getting that kind of groggy Arizona special teams those of you again joining us late have been notorious over during letters missed seven years look at that he gets knocked back about three or four yards actually a very dangerous type of play for Henley and the man who delivered the bowls of the blow singleton was injured and is down he's one of two twins who played for this Arizona team this is Chris Singleton his twin brother Kevin is also an outside linebacker out of Parsippany New Jersey well I'll tell you what you hate to see when the guys get their heads in his in situation like that and to get jammed up he's gonna calm glad to see him get up and quickly boy and just to set the stage for this final 322 and singles and waves to the Arizona contingent in the end zone of whom there are large numbers they travel well path and here come the bones of UCLA trailing again but this time just [Applause] have some questions about in the pocket everybody's calling therefore an intentional grounding but Stevens made it a legitimate attempt to get the ball to Carl Darrell on the break [Applause] [Music] we're UCLA has been successful offensively in the second half as getting Stephens rolling out to the wide side of the field now he is a late flag there that's that's an awfully late flat well I think the reason for the late flag is that the referee was knocked down by the tackle but he got up a little bit earlier than that that's a--that's a latest flag I have ever seen thrown I guarantee it and I thought this is a legitimate attempt by Matt Stevens to get the ball to Darrell that's law sit down of course here's the replay no watch the referee who gets knocked down so that's why the flag was so late but you don't see there is Carl Darrell who is down maybe five yards past the where the ball hit that's a second down and nine from the five from the end zone Stevens release pal to guests in green and they get out from the shadows up to the sixteen airline Byron Evans makes the package we come to you live this afternoon from the Rose Bowl in Pasadena California I'm Vermont twist along with hat Aten and John Dockery Arizona leads 25:24 they had a half-time edge of 18 nothing the Bruins defending Rose Bowl champions scored 24 unanswered points but then the Wildcats arose with a growl and went 73 yards in nine plays the go ahead toss David Adams Derek Hill third and 20 they knew both these downs and get 10 Stephens has a man open with a 30 first down Paco Craig will seventy-eight yard I want to say that Matt Stephens in hitting his received his share of criticism this year some of it deservedly but he is really hung in here today and nearly risen to the occasion when he's had to under duress he steps up into the pocket throws this ball on a move nice touch and Paco Craig for the second time today wide open coming across the middle and that's a berry they play office Lee on third and 20 with under three minutes at noon series and downs for UCLA and they trail by one a field goal of Gwynedd global Gaskin Green to the 40 john Dockery has moved over to the Arizona Wildcat sideline let's go down to him for this report thank you very very important negative development for Arizona's they tried to hold UCLA is the fact that this man Danny Lockett perhaps their best defensive player just told me he's through for the day his legs a week he's boiling miserable he's dehydrated and won't be back Hearn that's a big loss second down and eight from before Stephens wants a screen pass sets it up left side he doesn't have much supplemental help and the ball carriers down at the 44 did you see Jim Birmingham the nose guard hustle over there number 59 this guy is playing nose guard and this is the kind of defense Arizona has they just get a lot of people to matter where the ball is slowing a lot of people around the ball including defensive lineman ran all the way across the field another third down now for UCLA they are 4 of 16 on third down conversions need is for Stevens gets a good block as a man open fires it tarp the 45 [Applause] Carl Darrell came back to beat the ball UCLA has two timeouts though stop the clock here is that new the chain that you see only has two timeouts remaining he called they're all did a nice thing he saw that Matt Stephen who was in trouble many receivers will not work the way back to the quarterback Marcus Greenwood number 45 made the first big block and then doral you gonna see him work his way back and then go down to make sure the catch for the first down 124 total throwing a game in the clock running they try the running game again knocks Gaston green down the crowd doesn't like the call on first down okay they have two timeouts remaining David three neither kicker is long this year it's 41 yards and they're a long way from that oh you're right they've had success rolling him out to the wide side of the field why the out right out route for good walk again Stephens drills it looks like they were going to think about the hook-and-ladder play they're now at the 32 Willie Anderson made the catch and timeout is called to see some good arm strength here by Matt Stephens because his feet weren't really set watch his feed this one's all armed he's got a strong arm as he whips his body around after the roll little half roll to his left he's gonna whip around and throws that one all arm and Willie innocent just found a little dead spot there in the defense remember a first down that's good offense Terry Donahue is gonna talk it over and we'll take the timeout number 49 is Danny Luckett he just turned John dr. e say he was through for the baby hydration his coaches says sent him back in the game maybe his pass rush he led the pac-10 in sacks a year ago has five this year they need him on the outside rush david Franey has missed this year from 46 his longest field goal is 41 first and 10 from the 32 pitch out Gaston Green goes left breaks the tackle [Applause] yards the junior Los Angeles UCLA will vote for two points here have a five-point lead at 32 25 in this extraordinary ballgame turning down the only gave me two of his two points played he didn't think he was gonna have to do it three time baby draw it up in the grass [Applause] 41 seconds remaining [Applause] [Music] Stephens it's good [Applause] / Anderson in front of Barton Rudolph and the UCLA Bruins lead by seven this ballclub was at the 5-yard line after the intentional grounding call now Homer Smith told his offensive players today Weber touches the ball is that I have to come up with a big place and this is the Gaston greens fourth quarter have not heard much from them all game until the fourth quarter for the champions rise to the occasion and here's another look at green as they two other large runs breaking through tackles and this is been an Arizona team ordinarily which is a very good tackling team Chuck Cecil missed the tackle there and what a day and it won a fourth quarter it's been free gas to green another look at the Sprint's to go on no Terry done even asked why they haven't been successful thus far this year and largely it's because this being Green has been the first has had bunions on his right foot and not had and not had a full speed but today he's really come through here too for sport three big runs there was not an incomplete mass after the intentional grounding [Music] and 41 seconds remain the last day will kick off for UCL all bounces at the pen Greathouse art great house to question running gets only as far as the age 32:25 and who's to say Arizona can't come back well they have two timeouts left here they've got a quarterback who's got a very strong arm although he is not completed too many long balls downfield yet today but they've got two great wide receivers in Derek Hill and John Horton who have the capability of getting deep under quickly 37 seconds remaining Alfred Jenkins intubate that's not going to do it they're gonna have to get the ball either in Derrick Hills hands or John warden in Arizona to have a chance they need to touch him and will wake up a second down with 32 seconds to go and Arizona has two timeouts left 18 nothing Arizona leave at halftime 24:18 UCLA 25 24 Arizona and here's Jenkins on the run slides with the first down at the 29 yard line I'm gonna try to make his way out of bounds oh now they will stop the clock for the moment while they move the chains [Music] [Applause] timeout has been called Jenkins is going to talk it over with Larry Smith we're gonna catch your breath 23 seconds to go in the ballgame UCLA and this extraordinary ballgame has come back again they lead by seventh Arizona's Wildcats tried to remain undefeated for the year and win their second conference game now face a first down in 10 with 23 seconds to go coming up tomorrow on the NFL well for the eastern time and then regional coverage Washington versus Dallas the Rams Atlanta Chicago Houston or Detroit vs Green Bay took your local whiskey for one of these games in your in New York Minnesota San Francisco New Orleans Indianapolis of st. Louis a Tampa Bay I don't think any of those can top this first and 10 23 seconds to go [Applause] Jenkins Hill caught at the 35 yard line and climb out while they move the chain the Jenkins gun I should get his team on the ball right now and just throw a ball out of bounds throw a ball out of bounds he's got one timeout but he can just get the ball out of bounds and still save that timeout if they do that that's the precise of the point Pat as soon as they whistle time and throw it and save a timeout 35 yards away from the end zone 15 seconds to go now here's Jenkins [Applause] they've got a play in mind they're flooding the left side it's three on three in the endzone kept an incomplete not a bad call there though not a bad call in 15 seconds they got at least got the ball into the end zone with an opportunity to score a touchdown we've seen so many teams do this over the years actually the Atlanta Falcons won two ball games a few years ago and they put three wide receivers down and scored on tip balls now you see the guy in the middle he is just trailing he's once the front to guy to go up and tip the ball and the guy in the back is done it is going to try to make the play UCLA defense did the best thing they could was try to knock the ball back away from the field of play Arizona has used its final timeout alfred jenkins comes over to talk about it with Chuck Stobart the offensive coordinator and we'll be back [Applause] Arizona huddling they have time I think Pat Phil one more play since they must get in the end zone and you probably see a similar situation three wide receivers on the same side of the field perhaps another wide receiver to the other crew side throw the ball the ball must be in the end zone because in college football now it's a new rule a couple of years ago if there's pass interference it does not just come out to the one-yard line still marked off the line of scrimmage so the ball must be thrown into the end zone to get the touchdown and in the back of your mind keep this thought Larry Smith told us last night if he has a chance to go for the rim of the time he will go for the Tod he will kick the extra point because of the conference race the N stands first time we've seen shut information alpha Jenkins six yards back low snap but Jenkins hazard a three-man rush and not much of one now the freelance began and Jenkins off balance throws it into the end zone complete unbelievable ball game has come to an end [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] a Chevrolet most valuable players of the game are Stan Monta La of Arizona and Gaston Green of UCLA a check in the amount of $1,000 will be donated by Chevrolet to each school's general scholarship fund to further assist qualified students in all chosen academic fields John daquiri is down on the field with Terry Donahue John Thank You Vernon you said you weren't sure about the character of your team what did you find out today well we're really pleased with the way our team responded in the second half obviously it was a situation where we could have cashed it in in the first half because everything went arizona's way and we played very poorly but i'm really pleased and proud of my players backs against the wall you did it changes the whole picture in the pac-10 well I think the win here certainly puts the conference in an upside-down situation and it really it gives us a little hope and that's all you want life a slow starter a fast finish that Terry done you know that evening all right John thank you very much UCLA wins it 30 to 25 after trailing 18 nothing at halftime Matt Stephens the senior quarterback and Gaston Green leading the comeback in the second half offensively and found the spark and Gaston green bound the end zone our final score UCLA 32 Arizona 25 now let's go back to our New York studios and Jim Nantz all right Thank You Vern what a performance out there and that was a game UCLA had to have to keep any hope at all alive in the pac-10 now the upsets of the day in college football Texas Tech beat Arkansas the Razorbacks first loss of the year and it was suffered at home Washington State and USC now this is in the third quarter the Cougars have just kicked the field goal to up their lead now to 20 points 27 to 7 USC ranked number nine in the country will have more scores well the college football report continues after this message and a word from your local stations [Music]
