[Music] every muscle hurt after the game every bit of me had been stretched to the maximum there are games and then there's the USC UCLA game plan UCLA was emotional thing but you fill in your heart and I want to beat them and I want to be them very badly it is one of the great games that played it it's almost a career within a career it's a season within a season I want to tell you if you're coaching in this game here you don't go anyplace if you lose every place you go what happened just coming out of that tunnel for the hundreds and 2,000 people and everybody going crazy or it's just it's a great throw they stand next to your standing sedan and they try to press C as the bigger muscles and stuff so it all comes down to uh who's the best in the field this old Southern Pacific locomotive belt is the trophy in a football rivalry that has no match anywhere USC versus UCLA hello I'm Tom Kelley the Yale Harvard game is considerably older but seldom means much to the rest of the country Cal Stanford the big game well that's 37 years older but seldom means much outside the Bay Area the contest for this victreebel is the biggest game it's been a national television 21 times the Rose Bowl has been on the line for one or both teams 33 times but bail or no bail Boulder no ball the USC UCLA rivalry we're going to set before you as a marvelous backyard brawl with the backyard in this case being all of Los Angeles UCLA is a large public school today but it started small as a two-year college downtown on Vermont Avenue the southern branch of the State University by 1929 it had outgrown that campus and moved west to Westwood and in recent decades it has passed up its Big Brother in Berkeley at least in sports almost 40 years before UCLA was founded USC began as a small Methodist school students used to shoot at rabbits from the backs of streetcars as they commuted to the campus in the middle of mustard fields the University of Southern California long ago grew into a large important private university but big or small it's been producing great teams in many sports for most of this century these two campuses just a few freeway miles away from each other have produced 150 3 all-americans and 29 Bowl victories [Applause] [Music] unity parents are going to vote [Applause] [Music] proximity has bred hostilities sometimes in this game it's brother against brother sometimes in the stands it's husband rooting for a different team than his wife or business partner against business partner the lake UCLA coach red Sanders once said it's not a matter of life and death it's a little more important than that [Applause] the biggest game began in auspiciously in 1929 the same year the Westwood campus opened for business it was an inauspicious year all around with the stock market collapse and the start of the Great Depression the first game was at the beginning of the season not at the end and Bill Spaulding's Bruins were outclassed to say the least the Trojans of Howard Jones who were to finish tended to and beat Pitt in the Rose Bowl demolished UCLA 76 to nothing there wasn't much to it room in Johnson he didn't emphasize to much he knew who could handle them USC gained 735 yards to UCLA as 124 and racehorse Russ Saunders the chief model for the Tommy Trojan statue had 231 yards and three touchdowns UCLA's yearbook declared be it forever remembered that the Bruins were courageous martyrs a martyrdom continued in 1930 but marshal Duffield an orb Mulder ran wild in a 52 two-nothing trampling by the Thundering Herd wisely the two schools put the crosstown rivalry on hold for five years in Los Angeles at that time where I was born and raised there was only one school that was you at one University and that was USC UCLA had not grown and become the size and have all the traditions and so forth at USC was USC in 1936 Franklin Delano Roosevelt had replaced Stanford man Herbert Hoover in the White House the economy was still down but Howard Jones friend and golfing buddy bill Spaulding had his Bruins ready they were still courageous but this time they were also competin [Applause] every game that we played boy we was out to win show him a kid on the block new kid on the block go in fact the Trojans had to come from behind to earn a 7 7 tie quarterback Andy Schindler engineered the third quarter Drive and fullback Jimmy Jones went over from the 2 a clever quarterback named Grenville archer Lansdale the third help USC get a 19 to nothing lead in 1937 Georgians are ready for the play Lansdale fades back for a pass he shoots a quick room complete to share for a touchdown that was UCLA's turned to battle back to the highlight this pass from Kenny Washington to Hal Hirsch on Washington back let's go a long win [Applause] sports writers put it at various distances but after looking at film the next day coaches said the pass had traveled 62 yards in the air but Washington's arm wasn't enough trying made a stand at its own 15 and at the end 119 to 13 UCLA's bill Spaulding who was as relaxed and first of all as his friend Howard Jones was turned knocked at the USC locker room door after the 37 game saying you can tell Howard it's all right to come out now Kenny has stopped passing four times in this storage series the crowd has exceeded 100,000 and 1939 was the first when I ran out on the field 103 thousand people I felt like running back up into the stand I was so scared I'd never seen that many people in my life besides Jackie Robinson and Kenny Washington versus Granny Lansdowne and Bobbie Robertson both teams came into this game unbeaten there's a terrific football game even to this day I can reflect back of the great players that they had and think of Kenny Washington and Jackie Robinson Anna great football team we were very proud of our team [Applause] that was a tough game why we all both of us we really played hard and everything was on the table that for that game because the winner went to the Rose Bowl and city champ the two powerhouses battled to the second tie in six games in the first quarter USC reached the UCLA one but Robinson's tackle jarred the ball loose from Lansdale the game became a defensive struggle both teams were held scoreless but in the final minute of play UCLA got to the Trojan three three runs gained just one yard and on fourth down the you clans elected to pass Paul Zimmerman was to write in The Times the next day it was like throwing away three of a kind and drawing to a Royal Flush instead of an easy field goal UCLA try to pass which Bobby Robertson swatted down in the end zone when they threw the pass I saw it coming I said hot damn I can intercept this and then all of a sudden it went through my mind what if I get caught it for a safety so I said knock it down this all goes through your mind in a period of seconds and I did and I could hear Don Macpherson cuss me out behind me and I can't repeat the words that he said USC went to the Rose Bowl for the 6th time because it had suffered fewer ties to two UCLA's for USC's terrific defense in that game was led by Bill Fiske whose son Bill jr. was to be a USC all-american lineman 25 years later in six varsity seasons neither Fiske ever lost to UCLA yesterday December 7 live in infamy in 1941 of course the Trojans and Bruins had more important foes to worry about than each other strong young men went to military training and then fought at sea in the air or in trenches in Asia Africa and Europe but college football went on and right up to the start of World War two USC had had some close calls in the series and had been tied three times but had never lost to the Bruins in eight games was already the biggest game at least in the booming metropolis of Los Angeles we know that for sure because even though John McKay student body right and student body left were still many years away there already were student body pranks in 1937 the letters USC were burned into the grass of the quad at UCLA a three trojan culprits were caught UCLA got even that same year by painting the famous statue of Tommy Trojan King Tommy Trojan which has been a tradition for years and stealing his sword for Tommy's had more swords Ptolemy's they there's a legend that someone took off Tommy's arm and restarted this order in an embarrassing position but I think that's a apocryphal I don't think that anybody would've liked that trouble ever I can remember that there was one prank where some se people caught the UCLA students coming over to the paint Tommy Trojan which they used to do and when they did that they caught him and they tarred and feathered him and put him in cages and sent him up and down University Avenue which was quite something to say in 1942 UCLA fraternity pledges set off you Bessie's pile of tinder near La Brea and exposition well before a scheduled bonfire and rally they were caught and treated to unique hair stylings this old Bell was also a natural target UCLA alumni bought it back in 1939 and brew and cheerleaders would ring it once for every UCLA point scored but after a night game in the Coliseum in 1941 three USC students drove off with the truck carrying the bell the truck was quickly found but the large musical instrument remained hidden for over a year finally the two student body presidents got together and negotiated a truce the Bell would be returned and would become the victory bell the trophy for this game the first contest for rights to the Bell was in 1942 the great Howard Jones had died and after Sam Barry served an interim season USC's new head band was former center Jeff Gavin gnorm Ferry and Micky McArdle were stars for Troy but a future Pro Football Hall of Famer named Bob water-filled was too much to handle he set up one UCLA touchdown for the 14 yard quarterback sneak to the USC six yard line and his third quarter touchdown pass to burr Baldwin but UCLA ahead to stay 14 to 7 this was Troy's first loss to UCLA the daily Trojans sadly told its readers in memoriam Troy's domination over UCLA born September 28 1929 died December 12 1942 UCLA went to the Rose Bowl for the first time because of wartime travel restrictions USC and UCLA played each other twice in 43 44 and 45 in those three years the Trojans won the gridiron battle winning five games and tying ones [Applause] 1947 the war was over and the world was a relative peace once again and the USC UCLA craziness sailed right on one of the big stories in la that year it was a kidnapping or should I say a mutt napping USC's ornery car chasing mascot of the day george tire biter was stolen from the west Slauson Animal Hospital the mutt thieves were Bruin students who shared the letters UCLA and his raggy coat before giving him back some USC sorority women knit a Georgia sweater so he could appear at the 1948 Rose Bowl without advertising Westwood oh yes everybody gets into the act in this game players coaches students alumni dogs horses and of course the official when feelings run so high and players run so fast and hit so hard the zebras have a difficult job [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] I've always wanted to do that flags and zebras and controversial calls have played a big part in the USC UCLA rivalry in 1947 before more than 100,000 fans at the Coliseum USC had scored its only touchdown on a 40-yard pass play between Jim mystic powers and Jack Kirby but UCLA fought back and reached the USC 4 in the last minute of the game with just 55 seconds left Gordon gray intercepted Ernie Johnson's pass of the endzone to give us C its 10th Rose Bowl trip and the 11th victory over UCLA as opposed to to defeat on that 4th down to interception in 1947 UCLA claims that n filled Tinsley was held at the line by two Trojans that forced Ernie Johnson to pass elsewhere that lingers only in bitter memories though and not in the record book seldom has the series been more heated than in 1952 both teams were unbeaten and untied and just under ninety seven thousand people jammed the Coliseum along with national television cameras to see what would be one of the best Bruin Trojan games ever and one of the most controversial early in the first quarter the Bruins took a three nothing lead [Applause] but with the ball at the Trojan 25 in the second quarter Carmichael the ball carrier and the Bruins stopped him after a nice game or so they thought [Applause] I turned up the middle of the line which is about over the center's position and a couple of UCLA boys hit me and I bounced off and finally about eight or nine yards downfield Don Mumma grabbed me and when he did he made a fatal mistake he lifted me in the air as if he was going to drive me into the ground and I went and caught him from behind and and wrapped my arms around him and as he was going down as some of them might say as he was down he threw the ball flat rolled it to Jim Sears and down the sidelines Sears went probably untouched all the way later the deciding touchdown was set up when Albert Wilhoit a tough Dutch kid from Merced who later boxed professionally intercepted Paul Cameron's pass and took it 72 yards to the Bruin a [Applause] foreplay's later the lateral lads made a connection out of the open sears passing to carmichael for the winning TV that Carmichael to Sears lateral not only gave the Trojans of victory 14 to 12 but sent Jess Hill and his team onto the Rose Bowl against Wisconsin in 1955 usc's Jaguar John Arnett was probably the most exciting if not the best running back in the nation but he too would be the subject of a controversial call the USC won the toss elected to receive we kicked kickoff Hardeman curat and the other guard myself have the center of the field went down there Neath the kickoff John I met got the kick they cross blocked on the Hardiman and myself split us John inet1 right up the middle all the way for a tech sergeants in the opening kickoff it's a long soaring kick down the field taken by Southern Cal John Arnett on the three and here's a gridiron thriller he charges through the onrushing UCLan shakes off tacklers and streets for the goal and then they called it back SC off sites lined up off sites and they must have been right officials there are is right [Music] UCLA went on to win 17 to 7 the first time in the series at one three in a row three times the game has been decided at least in part by pass interference penalties the first time was 1959 and yet the crystal play the midfielder you plan passed by Belle Kilmer williwaw w SE intercept but the Trojans couldn't untether the Trojan horse just yet the band couldn't play conquest Trojan Jerry trainin was called for pass interference on the play there was interference but they miss marked it and they gave us about 20 extra yards on it there wasn't any doubt there was interference the point was the mark UCL a got the ball on the Troy seven and eventually scored wrecking us these chances for an undefeated season we had really worked so hard during the offseason and and during the season and and I think it really was very frustrating to lose that game to UCLA and it just killed our spirits for the next week - in 1969 the 10th coach in UCLA his football history Bridge expert Tommy Protheroe thought he had his greatest team USC was upset about the call on Traynham a decade earlier but now it was UCLA's turn to curse the face and curse the refs late in the fourth quarter the Bruins behind the passing of Dennis demet drove down the field to take a 12 to 7 lead [Applause] and with less than three minutes to go deep in their own territory the Trojans faced a do-or-die situation fourth and 10 I think it was the play before that pro-pro had called me up up to him on the sidelines and he had told me that he said Dennis the next time we get the ball when we go back in just do a quarterback sneak and fall on the ball and time will run out and at that time I finally realized that hey we're gonna go to the Rose Bowl and we had a fourth and 10 Jimmy Jones went back to pass he was old for 12 I think at this moment and he threw the fourth and 10 ball about 10 feet over Sam Dickinson said and I saw the ball was high and when I got ready to jump up for the ball it seemed like on my way up something stopped me to the point where I didn't really know what was going on at the time looked like the game is over and the defensive back for UCLA I forgot who he was thank God for that guy he came in and he clipped Sam Dickinson before the ball got there and he gave us the first down kept us alive right I think it was a good cause we look back it was close and I think that the official could have called it either way but there was contact the ball was I would say 10 feet over his head it landed on the track in today's rules that wouldn't have been passed interference but still they had about I'd say 35 40 yards to go so you know it still we're still in the ball game that controversial call gave us C an automatic first down at the Bruin 33 from there Jimmy Jones threw to Sam dickerson who made one of the greatest catches in the history of this oh man that's the most beautiful catcher that I'll ever remember the rest of my life no it's a little controversy at the time was was he in was he out but film showed he definitely was in barely and it seemed like the ball just hung in the air for a long time and I'm running and running and waiting for the ball to come down and then finally came down I found myself at the back of the end zone and I knew I had to drag my feet to see him down so I got my feet latched onto the ball rolled and referee signal touchdown I was a happy puppy so with the rest of our teammates eight years later UCLA was knocked out of the Rose Bowl in another two-point game that was at least in part decided by the officials they showed up under Center takes the staff the trash so UCLA led 2726 near games and when GRU and safety Johnny Lin was hit with still another controversial pass interference call [Applause] Trojans trying to get up off the floor heard of the quarterback straight back to throw has a lot of time looks over the middle single and has time for one more play - scrimmage the 21 Jordan will try the [Applause] there's a USC alumnus in town who's married to a UCLA graduate which is fairly common despite the harsh feelings that sometimes exist between the two schools well this trojan claims that when he's feeling amorous and she isn't she doesn't say not tonight I've got a headache she says not until you admit that Johnny Lynn did not commit pass interference some of the die-hard partisans in this series would like to skip such cardiac arrest finishes as the 1977 game they'd prefer to see their forces stop the opposition by three or four touchdowns but the rivalry doesn't always work that way in fact it hasn't since the Howard Jones days of the 20s and the 30s the Bruins of the Trojans are both extremely tough year after year that's why this rivalry is such a good one they're closed both athletically and geographically it makes victories for either side taste oh so sweet UCLA got more of the sweet tastes and even some of those rare stopping zin the era of Henry red Sanders a Vanderbilt graduate who arrived in 1949 - who's he headlined and soon built UCLA into a single wing powerhouse red Sanders at that time was figure than John McCain John Robinson combined I mean he was the man in football in the West Coast and he totally intimidated me and he called me over the office one day and he looked at me and he says Anacin y'all gonna play for me boy and I said yes sir and that was that is no I went to UCLA he was a tough demanding kind of coach sideline coach it was very involved in the practices you never really knew where you stood with him but you sure hope that you stood pretty high with him and so you did everything you could to get him to to like you and to respect you because you were just you just knew he didn't in Sanders nine years the Bruins had a 6-3 edge over the Trojans and three times the thundering was heard from UCLA 39 to nothing 21 to 7 and 34 to nothing I think the great thing about him is that he took everybody as an individual and was able to get the most out of you handling everybody differently [Applause] much of what frustrated the Trojans in those days could be attributed to red Sanders coaching genius but Sanders who had coached UCLA to nine consecutive winning seasons and won UPI national championship died after the 1957 season [Music] Fred Sanders and his Bruins may have won the battle on the field during the 50s but trojan pranksters clearly won the battle off the field consider the evidence in 1952 an eight-foot teddy bear loaned to UCLA by actress Shirley Temple was kidnapped from the lobby of a Westwood movie theater and stashed in the USC fraternity house or as in 1957 when a Trojan spy and the Bruin rally committee helps switch instruction cards so that at game time loyal Bruin fans unwittingly came up with a series of USC stunts in contrasting colors within the larger UCLA stunts you see how a rally committee went crazy and they thought a bunch of SC students that they're doing so they ran up there and discovered all these kids had UCLA ID because of these joy students just doing a nice job of showing there wasn't a thing they could do about it so up came the stunts each time and there was s he's stunts within it the following year Trojan jokesters produced a bogus daily Bruin kidnapped the regular UCLA truck driver and delivered the parodies to the Westwood campus when I was a student USC had gotten hold of the daily Bruin Edition and put out a fake one and had come out with big headlines Trojans favored by 40 points to beat UCLA coach Barnes says we haven't got a chance we shouldn't show up etc etc alluded to some of the problems that UCLA had had with the law for some ex players and had got after it's pretty good UCLA students hatched a plot of their own in 1958 we had a grander scheme to begin with what we were going to do is hover over Tommy Trojan we thought we could get like 10 feet over Tommy Trojan drop a noose over his head and then rip him out of his moorings unfortunately the legalities wouldn't allow that so we did the next best thing we bought four bags of Bandini and we took them up to the sky flew over LA and hovered as as long as we could get I don't remember what the legal limits were that time the helicopter pilot was very careful and we had to make a choice do you drop the bags of Bandini in the bag we figured we had hurt somebody so you can't do that so of course we opened the bags of Bandini and started dumping out of the helicopter no one had told us the effects of riding in a hot copter was that there is a wash of air which blows much of what you fill out of a helicopter back at you so it looked like we were at a minstrel show when we were done because we were very covered with the stuff how much landed I don't know in 1960 and other coaching genius took a hand in the rivalry only this time it was at USC at the man was an X World War two tail gunner from West Virginia and the University of Oregon John McKay [Music] Mackay's first showdown with UCLA was a defensive gem as the Trojans held the Bruins brilliant offensive leader bill Kilmer - just 29 yards rushing Marvin McKeever led the defense against Kilmer and also caught a touchdown pass from Bill Nelson [Applause] the Trojans went on to beat the Bruins 17 to 6 USC was undefeated and a 14 and a half point favorite in 1962 but UCLA coached by Bill Barnes held Troy scoreless for 50 minutes the other 10 minutes were enough though Willie Browns great leaping catch of a Bill Nelson pass set up one touchdown and quarterback Pete Beathard led an 82-yard drive for the insurance points USC won 14 to 3 after the 1964 season Barnes resigned at UCLA and was replaced by another ex Sanders assistant Wiley Tommy Protheroe who had done well coaching at Oregon State some believe the secret to Pro throw success could be found in his mysterious briefcase but to this day no one knows what was in it to tell you the truth I don't think it ever had anything in it no one had the nerve to ever look in it but I know he never looked in it so I don't think there was anything in it but it made for a good image he did have place sheets in that in that in that briefcase the game plan I never saw him revert to it very often but it was there in case he needed a wonderful image on the sidelines and that really became part of his personality trout throw was to split his six games against McKay and five of them were dandies including the first in 1965 Wallace at the 49th even turns gets to fire big hole and the bruins car first Winslow's takes the snap play action fake [Applause] we felt we had further will put the Bruins away that afternoon and I think probably halfway or at least a third of the way into the fourth quarter we were pretty sure we were on a roll and that roll was also going to take us to the Rose Bowl let's seed control the entire game I think Mike Garrett ran for over 200 yards we were not in the game if for some reason that game every critical play that they could have scored and put the game away they fumbled and we'd recover every time indeed the Trojans fumbled five times on an afternoon when they had over 400 yards total offense I think it's it's one of the occasions where I was on the field with a USC football team where we took for granted our position we never really took for granted our position and if that was a lesson I think a lot of us learned snailed USC led 16 to 6 with less than 4 minutes to go but UCLA behind sophomore quarterback Gary Bevin staged one of the most miraculous comeback to this area beeban play-action fake keeps on the option he's got it cuts back he's got 5 and down at the Trojan 41 villains with the ball beavin takes the snap gives the ball no captain victim [Applause] so the Bruins now going for to be [Applause] the last 4 minutes we were not aware of what we were accomplishing we put a score in that was going to make it respectable then one of Tommy's tricks that we told you about in the briefcase with the cards and everything he tried an onside kick and everybody in the stadium that was coming but why the ball bounced the Dallas bride only recovered you know it's just fate maybe it was our year that year after the onside kick recovery and as I looked at Tom and talked to him before we went in I think there's a twinkle in our eyes because we know it can happen after allowing a UCLA first down the Trojan defense stiffened and with seconds left on the clock the Bruins had only one more chance the idea was to hit Mel far down the sidelines so we could get a field goal I've been burned on that play earlier in the ball game paths have been intercepted so we call the same play again thinking that we doubt slick them because we'd never come back with a play that good intercepted but Gary being a sophomore not knowing any better went back into the ball perfect ass port down to the Bruins beavin trying to catch lightning in a bottle takes the snap rolls to his right [Applause] the five touchdown I remember dropping back on a weak side zone and dropping back and seeing the ball going into the end zone and that very vivid in my mind was a gray November day a classic you know one of those things memories that'll last you a lifetime you must play either whether you're winning or losing to the very last second and I think we all learned a lesson that day it was devastating I watched Gary be live and play and the thing when you when you get beat by a great athlete it's kind of like Porcher you said well played the best I could he rose to the occasion and I marveled at him and I just said I mean that's a great player I really did not realize what occurred until Mike walked into the in the locker room afterwards and and expressed good luck to us in our efforts in the Rose Bowl and that moment for me is really the ball game aside from the passes because I learned a great deal of style and class and sportsmanship them from Mike Garrett walking in that bad locker room that that afternoon that had to be a very hard thing to do even though he never had a chance to play in the Rose Bowl Mike Garrett did become usc's first Heisman Trophy winner in 1966 UCLA is outstanding quarterback Gary Bevan was sidelined with a broken ankle this day became known as like a script from a Hollywood film norm Dow made his first career started quarterback in his final game as a Bruin and beat the favorite Trojans 14 December for the ball game Tom and I and norm was sitting together and I can I can see Tom as if it was yesterday just looking at norm and say you've got nothing to do except to come out a winner in this deal just play well don't make mistakes that we win this ball game gonna be a girl [Applause] big time the Rose Bowl and possibly the national championship were at stake in 1967 not to mention the Heisman Trophy chief contestants UCLA's Gary beeban and usc's OJ Simpson who are on a crusade that week UCLA and the fact that we had a shot to play in the Rose Bowl and also had a shot at the national championship that was beyond my you know anything I had hoped for when the season started so I was just one happy individual you know when you came out on that field for the pre pre warm-up says teams did stadium was packed I remember trying to come across the track and it was just cables and cables from from the media and I can remember coming and just looking around and saying this is going to be one heck of a day the number one ranked Grillin struck early in the first quarter on a 12 yard run by thank Greg Jones [Applause] then toward the end of the first quarter Trojan quarterback Pat Cashman intercepted an errant beeban pass and returned at 55 yards to tie the game [Applause] midway through the second quarter the Trojans mounted a long drive that culminated in one of OJ Simpson's greatest run 13 yard line the staff pitched the Simpson turns up field he's at the ten of the five a lot of people think including Tommy Pro throw the UCLA coach the time the greatest Ronnie ever saw was Simpsons 13 yard run up the middle were five six seven UCLA players had a shot he kept on going to the goal line just cut my guy off and there were about four guys that hit OJ he stepped through him and round them and underneath them and over the top and some home got into the end zone I guess I can contribute it to good training at SC we always had to run the bags when it throwing bags at your feet and you know verdict was always grabbing at the ball while you're running through to all of these bags and you the key to the drill is to keep your knees and traffic going I just turned up and try to keep my legs churning and get up arms and legs and all I can call them finally when a guy had rapped on me I was I could dive into the end zone I was you know I could see the end zone and I just kind of lunged into the end zone I still don't understand how he made that run I don't understand how I made it alive if his runs but thank God he did that but that was a great run opening the second half the Bruins even the score on a long bomb between beeban and George farmer and then UCLA took the lead in the fourth quarter on another beeban touchdown pass this time to Dave nettle the tribe for the extra point would fail and for plays later USC quarterback Toby Paige audible eyes to possibly the greatest play in Trojan football history well you call the past play we come up to the line of scrimmage and when we get to the line of scrimmage I hear red which means it's inaudible Knicks play is hot we have an audible on red red 23 um I almost had backfield in motion because I'm up there and I I almost said Toby not only am i tied that's a horrible call Oh 30 I think and but you know before I can even do anything or even think about it the ball is now ball is at the Trojan 36 yard line Paige takes the snap hands to Simpson he's got five to the 40 cut the 40 cuts back to the 30 sitsit at the 10 [Applause] so much of it as a floor you would wake up and he'd be in the end zone and you say my god what what's going on the place would be going crazy third and eight would tend to be a passing play unless you have an oj simpson in your backfield so one it's a great call and and obviously it's a great run by a great running back that's about a five yard run this guy turned it into something else he bought one of the greatest runs I have ever seen the Trojans went on to win 2120 in one of the most dramatic games in the history of this storied sir [Applause] there was a type of game that I think both teams when they walked off they could say themselves I did the best job I could do that day and it's unfortunate the one team it has to win and one team has to lose while OJ's run helped USC win the game Gary beeban was awarded the Heisman the following year it was OJ's turn I was a fan of gearing because being from the Bay Area all year long you know as great as your opponents are the greater you can become you have the possible you know the opportunity to become and I cheer for UCLA I wanted them to cheer for Gary beavin and I thought he was honestly as valuable to his team as I was to FC I don't see Oh Jay every day or every week or every month for that matter but when our paths do cross I think there is a special moment there to say hello and and make sure that things are okay and all the things that you want to do in your life for getting done the Heisman Trophy is awarded to the best college football athlete in the country to be awarded to a Bruin and a Trojan in consecutive years is an indication of how great this intricity rivalry is this rivalry truly is interested in but it goes even deeper than that it's also frequently intra-family like in the case of rod and Fred McNeill two brothers who couldn't be closer except for the fact that rod played for USC and Fred played for UCLA I think I stopped eating your food we had to send some of the cooking for each other too so I stopped being a food you thought I was gonna poison you though I just try to slow me down a little bit rod and I playing against each other and they had cameras at the house gonna be mom and dad how do you feel what are you gonna fit I think our dog got interview this habit yeah as far as I was concerned if you wanted to play with the best football players SC was the place to go so there's no question but you know time I detect a little Lud don't you kind of feel like you wish you Advanta you say well this sounds like to me Dada but if your liver friend the reason if you went to UCLA because I told you if you go over there that there was a possibility to make the play my wife was a song leader at UCLA in 53 and 54 and my daughter is a graduate of UCLA obviously we missed somewhere because she married a USC Trojan so we have a we have a very exciting SC UCLA week I know that whenever we got on the field the guys on your team would always jump a little bit higher they take a couple of extra flips for the SC UCLA game frame than any other game there but that may be true because like rad seed I think I did know some UCLA guys doing deeds on my University but for the ones they were dating and sometimes loyalties change foster Anderson for example played for the Bruins and then was an assistant coach under John Mackay and John Robinson at USC people of the older generation which I am now part of treat me as an old friend people after that treat me as a traitor they think that I've gone completely over to the enemy and they just their number one question is why why why why I've always said it's because John McKay offered me a job and then I became a true believer I repent Aranda played for Terry Donahue at UCLA now he's an assistant coach at USC and played an important part in the 1987 upset victory over the Bruins the gun had just sounded when I was going around one corner when I looked over and the first person I saw was the coach at Donahue and right there something hit me and I felt sad for the first time and I don't know it I guess brought memories back from way back but uh something hit me inside and I felt sad but then I I looked over and I saw I saw our guys jumping and screaming and all of a sudden the rush came back and I said we won we're going on the Rose Bowl it's awesome it's great this great rivalry is seen from many different viewpoints one unique perspective is portrayed through the talented pen strokes of cartoonist Karl juban Thal it's the rivalry as the crosstown rival was between the two and you've got partisans on both sides and and my readership consisted of both and so it was a it was a perfect setup for me as far as taking your best shot but I never I never tried to be partisan one way or the other I tried to be as factual about it as I could and hopefully poke some fun at it if I could [Applause] everybody is interested in that yet consequently you've got a complete audience for it and usually the characters involved in it be they the coaches or their star players are national nationally recognized people and so that makes for more material it's a it's by far the best college sports subject for a cartoonist I think the 1970 USC got off to a bad start a seven point underdog UCLA whipped the Trojans 45 to 20 different meal was my quarterback coach and I remember going up to him and saying coach I want to score a hundred points I thought it was possible I vivid memories from the year before and I just wanted to score as many points as possible it was one of those games where everything clicked it was like the game was in slow motion and every play that we ran worked the 45 points for the most ever scored by the Bruins against USC a fitting end to the outstanding college coaching career of Tommy profile after Pro throw went to the pros John Mackay continued the annual battle against UCLA McKay 72 team which many experts consider the finest team ever in college football overpowered the Bruins 24 to 7 and went on to win a national championship the national championship was in our grasp and people are starting to get a little tight and we know that UCLA was always tough they were always tough they were our rival and we've had some trouble with them in the past and it was a it was a very very tough ball game and the score was not indicative of how close the game was they were a physical team a smart team a well coached team and when we went on the field with him it was like you know it was a matter of time and it wasn't to say that we weren't confident but you know we were definitely an inferior King unfortunately for UCLA it would only be two years later in 1974 that they would have to face another McKay powerhouse [Applause] what I remember most about the 74 game was a catch actually by John we were down about on there 10 or 15 yard on UCL I was going in for a score when John really got interested in the game and I threw him a slant pass and was actually throwing behind John I underestimated his speed and and actually John reaching back with one hand actually catching a ball one-handed and going in into the score and acting very nonchalant about it Howard has a right to be nonchalant every now and then JK well it's near the end zone I wouldn't have done that at the 50-yard line but I got a lot of glory out of the deal so I figured it was worth it the Trojans crushed the Bruins 34 to 9 and USC was awarded their seventh national championship their fourth under John McCain michaei had dominated the series with a 10-5 record going into his last UCLA battle in 1975 refusing to go for a last minute field goal in a tie the Trojans lost 25 to 22 coach McKay said later we never considered a field goal we play to win in 1976 UCLA took a surprising step and hired Terry Donahue as the new head coach a veteran assistant at Kansas at UCLA Donaghy was only 31 years old at the same time USC replaced McKay with a former assistant who had gone off for one year to the Oakland Raiders staff John Robinson and the battle continued in the first Robinson Donohue matchup the Bruins were ranked number 2 in the country and the Trojans number 3 UCLA only needed a tie to clinch its second straight trip to the Rose Bowl USC had to win the first one was the one I'll always remember for a couple of reasons running on the field national television they they kept you standing in the tunnel and when we ran on the field and in those days I was a little better shape than I am now I ran around the front and somebody clipped the back of my foot and I want flat on my face and that damn team ran right over me and I got the last guy they're gonna try said how do I get up with so nobody I never figured that going into the game the Bruins were unbeaten and averaging 361 rushing yards per outing the USC defense held UCLA to appalling 140 yards that day which was six left the tailback Rickey Bell accumulated for Troy there's some great memories for me of that team since Evans was a great memory for me we're ahead 17 to nothing if we had the ball at their 34 yard line we were at quarterback draw this transfer with a whole team yeah just the whole UCLA take score down by the flag near the tunnel and was running so fast on this ran at the time I can remember him coming back and running down the sideline the whole stands cheering sevens now now his life had changed you know not just we kind of looked at each other and I think we need okay you know they're bad guys with us a good times to USC landed half 24 nothing and won easily 24 to 14 [Music] before a sellout crowd of over 90,000 to 1978 the Trojans and Bruins once again battled for the conference title and the Rose Bowl burg [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] quarterback Paul McDonald threw two touchdown passes a junior tailback Charles white ran for a hundred forty-five yards and with this run late in the fourth quarter broke the all-time career rushing mark kid USA the Trojans beat the Bruins 1710 and went on to win USC's eight national championship the following year USC had one of its most talented teams ever Troy's stubborn defense was led by future all pros chip banks and Ronnie Lott [Applause] [Music] Heisman Trophy winner Charles white ran for 195 yards and four touchdowns to lead us C to one of the most lopsided victories in the history of the series the Trojans led 35 to nothing at halftime and coasted to an easy but great 40 9:14 in four years Terry Donahue had yet to be QSC and even though his record was otherwise outstanding his fans were grumbling and nothing seemed to go right for the Bruins finally in 1980 Donohue got his first win in a game that featured one of the craziest plays in a series full of crazy play Trojan defensive back Jeff Fisher deflected a J straighter pass UCLA is alert Freeman McNeil gathered in the deflection and went in for the score the play covered 58 yards and brought this understatement from Robinson I thought you see a nice pass for a touchdown had an element of fortune to but the following year Lady Luck smiled on John Robinson led by USC's fourth Heisman Trophy winner Marcus Allen the Trojans took the lead early in the second quarter [Applause] but the Bruins fought back and went into the dressing room with an 18 to 12 lead then late in the fourth quarter trailing 2115 the Trojans intercepted a Tom Ramsey pants all of which set up a Marcus Allen go ahead touchdown run but the Bruins weren't through at a final dramatic drive brought UCLA with in field goal range with four seconds left you know some weeks you look at the opponent's field goal protection and say yeah you know there's not much chance but that week we said you know we can block 146 yarder Anderson the man that will be doing the kicking the lines are set there's the snap it's down he hits it at clock [Applause] we got it for the might of minute chica and the Trojans will win it was great and you fans with a while because it's it's one thing to in your final game at the Coliseum but if you lose I mean end and win but if you lose and you have to walk the seniors out it just puts a damper on things so we wanted to you know you walked out the right way and salute it the right way we won the game and we're very very happy about them in 1982 the USC UCLA rivalry changed radically UCLA decided to move out of the Coliseum and play its regular-season games in the Rose Bowl Terry Donahue grew to love the move believing it gave UCLA a true home-field advantage for the first time in their first game in their new home the Bruins behind the passing of Tom Ramsey built up a 20 to 13 lead late in the fourth quarter but the Trojans fought back gallantly driving deep into Bruin territory with precious few seconds left on the clock the ball is at the one-yard line the clock shows four seconds and Tinsley is going to call three seconds Tinsley's calling timeout the Bruins lead 20 to 13 as Tinsley talks with Robinson the game hanging in the balance Tinsley of the Bruin one-yard line time for one more play looks over a very tough Bruin defense takes the snap play-action rolls right looking in the end zone throws [Applause] FCS battle they're down by one there's no time left just time for the try for two Tinsley at the line of scrimmage needs two to win win it or lose it on this play the snap he's back to throw looking [Applause] tonight ain UCLA continued in their winning ways both at home and at the Coliseum taking three out of the next four games from the Trojan 1987 saw the beginning of a new era in cochin football with the hiring of head coach Larry Smith in his first crosstown encounter the Rose Bowl was once again at stake [Applause] [Music] [Applause] after a frustrating first quarter Smith watched his Cogan's fall behind Kenda nothing but finally as the first half was drawing to a close they were threatening to score we'll see he throws and throws to the corner it's batted up in the air [Applause] [Applause] with no time left on the clock it was a ironically Peaks touchdown saving tackle was the spark that ignited USC in the second half behind the passing of peak the Trojans battled back [Applause] still trailing 13 to 10 with seven minutes left to play peak Guevara cap holder an opportunity to make his 9th reception of the game [Applause] yes call it touchdown he bobbled it regained its voice for the minute seven seconds left on the clock the Bruins had one last chance to come back [Applause] [Music] [Applause] the ball back to the [Applause] in his first year at USC in Larry Smith defeated his crosstown rival and was named pac-10 coach of the year [Music] [Applause] the win enabled USC to go to the Rose Bowl unprecedented twenty-fifth time what a series that has been 33 times with these intricity rivals of men the Rose Bowl has been at stake for one her vote with the 1987 win the Trojans increased their series record to 32 wins 19 losses and six times but the winners of the biggest game can't rest on their laurels Ark lying the Bell too long because that next game that next barbarous collision comes along so quickly as UCLA is Terry Donny who said after winning a 1984 it's just another battle in a Long War and it's a war that will go on as long as there are Bruins and as long as there are truck [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music]
