there are certain things about growing up that are easy to forget about the simple but somewhat mundane details that were all around us as we got older see how many of these you remember as we look back on Obsolete things that should take you back to your childhood eating ice cream was always a special treat but anytime it was done in large groups like at school or maybe at Camp you would always get it in a plastic cup and it came with that wooden paddle spoon most of the time you would have to wait a while for the ice cream to melt a little before you could get the flat spoon to even work and then once you took that first bite you realized the ice cream had a wooden taste to it kitchen tables and countertops went through a phase where they were all covered with formica the material allowed them to have fancy patterns in colors to match any Decor too the tables were often trimmed out in shiny Chrome and it gave you a diner Vibe right in your own kitchen today these are considered retro or mid-century and there is no doubt they transport you back to the 1950s and 1960s recollection road is proud to partner with Legacy box get early access to the best deal of the Year watch until the end of this video to see why Legacy box is the perfect gift this holiday season and then visit legacybox.com recollection for an incredible 65% off when you were a child earning money usually meant being paid in coins so you needed something to hold all of that loose change this rubber coin purse was the answer and it was fun to squeeze the tiny purse open and closed for many the smell and feel of one of these brings back fond memories you could fit nearly $3 and4 in one which had a lot of buying power back in the [Music] day as kids were toing around Little coin purses their parents were beginning to use more and more plastic credit cards to pay for things this was still back when paying by check was the norm but occasionally you would be at a store where they pulled out the credit card imprinter machine to run a credit card through it they would place the credit card on the bed and then load it with carbon paper before sliding the imprinter back and forth to capture the information on the card for a kid it was fascinating to watch the process [Music] happen at the beginning of each school year textbooks would be issued to students for each of their classes usually within the first few days it was required that you protect the book from wear and tear by wrapping it in a book cover made with a brown paper bag the brown paper then became a canvas for decorating and doodling throughout the school year some school stores even sold specially made books covers but most kids were just fine with the grocery store brown paper bag going into a McDonald's say in the mid 1980s meant that you would probably find ashtrays dispersed on all the tables but not any ashtray it was a small aluminum ashtray with the McDonald's logo right in the middle this was a time when people would eat inside of McDonald's quite often and it was a popular place for kids to have birthday parties too but this was also a time when lots of people smoked so having branded ashtrays on the tables was something many of us remember if you grew up in the 1970s or 1980s you most certainly remember the radio voice of Casey kasm his classic American Top 40 radio show was held each week and not only did he play the most popular songs but he also included little stories and longdistance dedications his voice was comforting and each broadcast became became a historic marker that captured the time perfectly some radio stations today still continue to reair the old countdowns which is a fun reminder of our younger days girls and boys alike loved to imitate grown-ups so what better way than to pretend to smoke a cigarette in the form of a candy stick candy cigarettes were a popular choice for someone with a sweet tooth and the packaging even looked like a real pack of cigarettes having a white Candy Stick hanging out of your mouth when you were 8 years old made you feel cool and the absolute best Aid to enjoy one was on a cold day where you could see your breath and pretend it was real smoke did you ever collect or play with paper dolls it seemed everyone had some because they were available everywhere and they were inexpensive some came in magazines from the time while others were purchased in sets you could cut them out and dress them them in different types of clothing just by folding the tabs over you could also build quite the Wardrobe by collecting different outfits but following the release of the Barbie doll the popularity of paper dolls declined dramatically whether you call them ding-dongs or ring dings these delicious snack cakes seem to taste better back when they were wrapped in tin foil the foil prevented the chocolate from melting and they just seemed to taste better this way Not only was the chocolate dipped in frosting but it had a whipped filling that made the ding-dong the very best part of your school lunch hobby shops were always a go-to place on a Saturday morning and these balsawood gliders were a popular toy to buy back then you just opened the package slid the wings and tail into the slots and you were ready to go flying tossing them in the air and hoping they didn't land on a roof or in a tree was always part of the fun too and if you were really lucky you had one that used a rubber band that could be wound up so it flew under its own power whether you were in need of a bite to eat while traveling or you just wanted to rest your head Howard Johnson's was a staple of Americana for many years what started off as an ice cream shop in the Northeast turned into a fullservice restaurant famous for their fried clams and then came the motels and hotels the name Howard Johnson could be found from coast to coast so seeing that familiar orange roof with the Weather Vein sitting on top it was a welcome and comforting sight for those who experienced [Music] it back before the internet Microsoft introduced us to some simple games that became a distraction for many employees and in some cases killed productivity games like Solitaire and mind sweeper both released in the early 1990s Were Meant to acclimate users into how to use a computer mouse and it worked but it ended up becoming something many of us used to waste time when we didn't feel like doing our [Music] job one of the sounds from our youth that is hard to forget is the ding-ding sound you heard when visiting a service station years ago as the car drove over a black hose it would ring the bell that l a gas station attendant know a car had pulled in that distinct sound meant you were about to be taken care of from getting your tank topped off your windshield washed and maybe even your oil checked those were the good old days let me know in the comments if I missed anything and make sure to sign up for the recollection Road
