[Music] well if you're not already standing we want to invite you to because we are in the presence of the king of kings and the lord of lords in this place second corinthians 5 21 tells us that god made him who had no sin to become sin so that we could become the righteousness of god we have so much to celebrate today and so we're going to do that right now i want to encourage you to lift up your voice let's sing together one heart one voice really wasn't for nothing that you shed your blood so i'm gonna live like my shame is gone i won't be shackled to the way i was oh i'm gonna live be with you today so good for us to be in here and really what we do is we gather at times like this really just to celebrate all that god has done all that he's done in us and through us and the difference that he's made in our lives and to those around us it was a few weeks ago we were in a a coordinating board meeting which we have you know every couple weeks and maybe some of you serve on the board you kind of know it's it's a board meeting and but this particular board meeting with the elders it kind of became a moment of worship is it just occurred to us just how much god has really shown his favor on us through this season and somebody came up with this crazy idea it's like what if we reversed the offering i mean it was it was a crazy idea and so what we did a few weeks ago is we handed out envelopes that had a 100 bill in them so that we could go and we could be the hands and feet of jesus so someone said well what do you think that would would cost and so it kind of had a range in mind and and after we did that all of our services and our spanish service that it came out to about 83 000 that was a wednesday night when we met what we didn't know what we didn't know is that the very next day thursday morning someone who had never given a gift to oak hills church before first time gift one time gift gave a gift that thursday morning can you guess how much it was 84 000 what's on gift come on [Applause] [Music] it was almost like jesus was gonna say hey i'm just gonna add a thousand dollars just so you know just so you know i've got this i'm calling you to trust me i'm calling you to be obedient to me but i've got this and i've got you and we could spend all day here telling stories times in our lives that we've experienced something like that where god he just lets us know he just reassures us that he is with us that he is for us that he is in us and so that's what we've come to do today just is to celebrate his activity what he's already done and so i want to encourage you we're going to sing a song together and as we do let's lift up our voices and let's celebrate his goodness and his faithfulness in our lives [Music] is [Music] [Laughter] salvation purchase of god born of his spirit washed in his blood perfect submission perfect submissions [Music] [Music] watching and waiting looking up [Music] sings this is my story this is my song [Music] [Music] and the church of christ was born [Music] for the love of jesus [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] to the is [Music] [Applause] praise forever [Music] of let's praise the king of kings [Applause] he is the god who shows us grace upon grace and unfounded amounts of mercy you can be seated thank you church [Music] you know i want to pick up on the story that travis was sharing with you earlier there's so many dimensions and layers to this and we've got stories coming in that let us know about how god has been at work you see uh on that day after we gave those envelopes out and challenged each of you to consider uh that you are the recipient of not only that gift but also awaken to the reality that we're the recipients of god's grace each and every day uh commissioned to go out and to share the hope of jesus uh you began prayerfully discerning god what needs would you have me meet where would you have me go what would you have me do who would you have me help and so that was a an incredible opportunity uh that we've had and many stories have been coming in and so let me share this one with you from ron and laura they said that on that day after receiving their envelope ron writes laura and i immediately thought of a mother we spent time with the day before who had expressed her challenge in seeking affordable clothing for her two rapidly growing daughters well that gift is now in her hands as is the message of god's love for her and her precious children thank you for your thoughtfulness and then ron adds this laura and i also decided to reciprocate your generosity with a ten-fold gift to oak hills church now that's a really cool story but we know that there are so many others of ways that god was meeting uh anticipating the needs that somebody would have and making those appointments for us to go and show that generosity and and ron and laura gave a gift through oak hills church that's not a gift to oak hills church and we remind you of that often and so you might even be asking yourself a little bit of well when i give to oak hills church what kind of ministries is that enabling well this uh this morning we began with our baby blessing ceremony and that was an opportunity for us to come alongside these parents and uh bless their children and help them to understand what it means to to raise their children to know and love and follow jesus but you know church we also made a commitment to them the the elder couple led us in a commitment to come alongside and encourage those families and those parents as they mentor excuse me as they disciple their kids and so i want to let you know about another way that we do that that you're giving enables and that's our mentoring mom's ministry mentoring moms is an opportunity for new and young moms to come together once a month to be mentored and encouraged by moms who are more experienced and have raised their own children and so this moms only night is an incredible incredible opportunity to have encouraging conversations around biblically uh themed topics to help parents understand moms specifically understand what it means to disciple their children to follow jesus the next mentoring moms is this uh october 4th it's coming up next month and i would encourage you moms if you are interested go to our website or our app to sign up and participate no registration is needed but um it is uh beneficial as we plan for dinner that evening and so be sure and sign up for that now we're gonna turn our attention to god's word so grab your bibles and open them up to genesis as max comes and leads us with this message well good morning everybody stop me if you've heard this joke this fella goes to play golf comes home from golf and his wife says how was your golf game he said fine i played with my friend the doctor she said did you have a good time you said well let me ask you how would you feel if every time you're about to putt somebody pokes you in the ribs with a golf club and how would you feel if every time you're about to hit the ball somebody screams in your back swing and how would you feel if every time you hit a ball in the fairway somebody comes and they they step on top of it and press your ball down into the grass and his wife said well i don't i don't think i'd like that very much and he said well neither did the doctor it's not a bad joke because it was decent decent we're looking at a fellow who's not easy to live with must have been difficult to hang out with but he sure makes a splash on the pages of scripture his name is jacob jacob we find ourselves about 2 000 years before the birth of christ we're in southern israel and we're looking at the story of a man who is known as one of the patriarchs kind of a mount rushmore figure in the old testament and we're looking at him because his story fascinates us not so much for his spiritual success but his spiritual struggles and we can relate to him why don't we pray and then we'll get to work have mercy o father upon us today we bless yet again those beautiful beautiful children and their parents and we ask your comfort to be upon them we ask your comfort upon any who are longing to have children but don't we also pray for those who who have children but are struggling it's not easy to raise a family lord we pray you'll forgive us for our sins especially our speaker his sins are so many and help us to see christ jesus christ through christ we pray and all the church said to understand this story that i'm about to share you're going to need to hearken back to the days before mobile phones yes there was such a era in times past not quite so distant as noah's and not so recent as today's headlines there was a segment of history that some of you may recall it is known as the days of the landline if you're physically able raise your hand if you were alive in the days of the of the landline some of you remember difficult as it may be for millennials and and gen zers to believe phones were not always mobile they did not fit into pockets they did not always fit into purses the phones were not wireless and phones were not smart phones once upon a time were attached to cables that attached to the walls that attached to telephone lines yes it's true ask your parents it was a tough time we walked to school every day in blinding snowstorms [Laughter] we had no jackets to warm us no gps to guide us no apps to entertain us those were dark days we had no cell phones and alas in my case i had to use something called a pay phone yes underline the word pay it was 1973 nixon was president watergate was brewing i lived in a college dormitory that was for all practical purposes cut off from the outside world we were only allowed to make local calls from the landline in our dormitory room in order to speak to someone who was not on the campus or not in our city we had to go to a pay phone we had to pay money i know it just sounds ancient we had to pay money to use the phone this would not have been a problem except for the fact that i had a little crush on a girl who was six hours away attending college at a different campus in order for me to talk to her i had to pay money right there i know your eyes are widening to the size of quarters at the thought and quarters are what i needed bunches of quarters and i had very little money but i did have an idea and that idea is the reason i share this story i realized i could charge that call to someone else the phone company allowed it but to whom would i charge the call my parents heavens no they would never pay the girl no she was every bit as broke as i i decided to charge the calls the long distance calls to a local vacuum cleaner store it just happened to be a number i found in the telephone book did i know the store owner no did i ask his permission no did i think i was doing anything dishonest now that's a good question fact of the matter is i'm not sure i was thinking at all my love fogged underdeveloped barely pubescent 18 year old brain didn't want to wait until i had worked and saved up enough money i just wanted to get on the phone so i did no i don't know no one will know i told myself i'm using a paid phone how will anyone find out well here's how the store owner saw the charges on his bill he called the phone company the phone company saw the number i had dialed and they called it they asked the sweet girl who answered the phone six hours away if she knew anyone who might be calling her from a pay phone on the campus of abilene christian university why yes i do she said innocently thinking for all she knew i'd won the lottery and as quick as you can say that was dumb the dorm director paid me a visit i was sent intern to pay a visit to the office of the college dean and then i wrote an apology to the store owner a check to the phone company and some 50 years later and using that event to illustrate the stupidity of shortcuts that's what i took a shortcut i didn't want to go the long way i didn't want to work i didn't want to save money i didn't want to take the honest respectable and what was to me uphill longer path i took a wide downhill dishonest one and so did you so did every person who has taken a step on god's earth and taken a breath on this green planet every person except christ has looked at their options and said well i can make it happen faster if i take this path here's what the scripture says all have sinned or taken shortcuts and fallen short of the glory of god now quickly i added those parentheses okay that's that that's that's not in the bible but the reason i added that phrase taking shortcuts because isn't a sin in essence a shortcut an approach toward life in which we say okay i know god says this but i think i could get there faster or get there quickly more more get there faster get there with more fulfillment if i go my way there's god's way here's my way my way just seems to work faster when adam and eve plucked the fruit from the only place they were told not to go did they not take a shortcut god had promised everything he had promised him dominion over the garden he had promised to be with them and yet he wasn't moving fast enough to suit their liking so they quite literally took matters into their own hands they reached for the fruit just like max reached for the phone and you reached for you fill in the blank can't we all agree that all of us have at times in our lives taken the quick route and that sin at its root is really just this unwillingness to trust or unwillingness to wait to follow god's plans that's exactly what happened with rebecca and jacob we're studying through the life of jacob we're looking at this story again i mentioned earlier it's 000 years before the life of christ we're in southern israel and we're looking at the story of jacob because really the story of jacob says if god could use a trickster and troublemaker grifter and drifter like him maybe he can use someone like me he was the grandson of does anybody remember abraham he was the son of does anybody remember isaac and this is important because he's only two generations removed from the promise that god made that abraham's descendants would be a blessing for the entire world and so jacob is a part of that lineage as we turn to genesis chapter 27 jacob's father isaac is on his deathbed at least he thinks he is the truth is he was nowhere near death he was 137 years old but he would live to be 180. but here's what happened when isaac was old and his eyes were so weak that he could no longer see he called for esau his older son and said to him my son here i am he answered and isaac said i am now an old man and i don't know the day of my death now then get your equipment your quaver and bow and go out to the open country to hunt some wild game for me prepare me the kind of tasty food i like and bring it to me to eat so that i may give you my blessing before i die now this blessing is central to the story of esau and jacob you'll remember jacob and esau were twins esau was born just seconds before jacob according to the ritual or custom of the day the elder son which was esau just by a matter of seconds would receive the birthright or the blessing this birthright entitled the recipient thereof to be the head of the clan which in this case was no small deal because they were very rich also to receive twice the inheritance and then spiritually they would be the one through whom this promise given to abraham would pass in other words eventually we know that the birth of jesus christ will come through this lineage so this blessing was a big deal traditionally the blessing would be given to the elder son in that case esau but god had spoken to rebecca the mother and god had told her that in this case the older will serve the younger in other words god had destined the blessing or the birthright to be given to jacob now rebecca knew this jacob knew this yet rather than wait on god to give this blessing or birthright honorably and publicly jacob and his mother decided to take a shortcut do you know this story you're not going to believe what happened next rebecca spoke to her son jacob i just overheard your father talking with your brother esau he said bring me some gain and fix me a hearty meal so i can eat and bless you with god's blessing before i die now my son again she's talking to jacob listen to me do what i tell you go to the flock and get me two young goats pick the best i'll prepare them into a hearty meal the kind that your father loves then you'll take it into your father he'll eat and bless you before he dies rebecca knows that the quickest way to get to a man is route through his stomach and so she has a meal prepared and she tells jacob to pretend that he is the brother jacob initially resists he says something like well even a cataract-eyed old man can tell us apart but they come up with a plan so while esau hunted rebecca and jacob cooked lamb and cut a goat's skin jacob dressed himself in the goat skin and he entered his father's tent and he said to him i am esau no he but he said i am esau your first son i have done what you told me now sit up and eat some meat of the animal i hunted for you and then bless me he quite literally pulled the wool over isaac's eyes isaac fell for the trick then the father said isaac i'm sorry then his father isaac said to him come here my son and kiss me so he went to him and he kissed him when isaac caught the smell of his clothes remember he's just wearing that goat skin that smells like his big brother esau he blessed him and he said ah the smell of my son is like the smell of a field that the lord has blessed may god give you heavens dew and earth's richness an abundance of grain and new wine may nations serve you and peoples bow down to you be lord over your brothers and may the sons of your mother bow down to you after isaac finished blessing him and jacob had scarcely left his father's presence his brother esau came in from hunting esau entered the tent unaware of what jacob had done he entered the tent expecting to receive the blessing but the blessing had already been given look how esau responded when esau heard his father's words he burst out with a loud and bitter cry bless me bless me too my father but isaac said your brother came deceitfully and took your blessing have you only won blessing my father bless me me also o my father now you and i know an immediate solution for this crisis right grab jacob by the back of the neck and drag him into the tent and let the dead unbless him i would say the same but according to the cultural laws of the day that simply could not be done the blessing was irrevocable irreversible isaac could give esau a secondary blessing a secondary inheritance but jacob had already cast the check as you can imagine the relationship between jacob and esau took a turn south at this point the scripture says esau hated jacob and said in his heart i will kill my brother jacob rebecca overheard esau's anger and she told jacob to scoot while the scooting was good and jacob skedaddled rebecca and jacob got what they wanted but boy did they pay a price for it we're barely into the story of jacob and look at the chaos that his deceit is creating let's just take a moment and tally up the damage of this shortcut he had the blessing but his family was splintered he was penniless he had no home he was running for his life his brother wanted to kill him his father had been humiliated by him and as far as we know he never saw his mother again for the rest of his life forfeited all the prosperity he could have received had nothing to show for his status he heads out with no flocks no servants no possessions next time we see him which i can't wait for this story hope you'll be back next week but the next time we see him he's sleeping in the middle of the wilderness using a rock for a pillow all because he took a shortcut all because he couldn't wait i wonder if another plot line could be imagined let's imagine that instead of rebecca and jacob swindling esau and isaac the storyline went something like this rebecca received that word from the lord that the older was going to serve the younger and though she didn't understand why she goes to isaac and she says this is what god told me and though isaac doesn't understand exactly why he says well let's get the boys together and they sit down with jacob and esau while they're still young and they say that jacob's going to receive the blessing but esau we're going to bless you too you'll be taken care of we're going to continue to walk together as a family of faith we're not going to deviate from what god said he has said this we're going to believe it we're going to accept it and consequently some thousands and thousands of years later the oak hills church would be studying the story of how two brothers worked together to understand god's will instead of a family that came apart because the mom and the son decided to take a shortcut but that's not the story we have to read because that was not the state of rebecca and jacob so as we bring this story to a close and bring this message to a close i bet you know the question i'm going to conclude with are you taking any shortcuts in life is there any chance that god has orchestrated your presence either online or in this sanctuary because he knows you're taking a shortcut and he knows the damage that that shortcut is going to create the fact of the matter is we serve a wonderful father and he has promised he has promised to take care of us to give us everything we need he has promised to bless us more than anything we could ever imagine all we have to do is wait on him oh but he is so slow his timing is out of sync with hours so we cut corners and we cheat if not the owner of the vacuum cleaner store we cheat on our business our taxes even cheat on our spouse and we deceive not with goat skins and lamb but but with lies and exaggerations with misstatements we polish apples we inflate the facts we drop names we work the system shortcuts well i know god wants me to have this job i'll just pad my resume a bit i know god wants me to be happy but i've just found happiness in the arms of a woman who's not my wife i know god wants me to tell the truth but in this case the truth is going to get me in trouble so i need a lie just a little lie just a shortcut i wonder how many shortcuts have been justified with the best of intentions at the sentencing for her role in the 2019 college admissions bribery scandal actress lori laughliner aunt becky to all of you full house fans addressed the court and she said i made an awful decision i went along with a plan to give my daughters an unfair advantage in the college admissions process and in doing so i ignored my intuition and i allowed myself to be swayed from my moral compass i thought i was acting out a love for my children but in reality it only undermined and diminished my dollar daughter's abilities and accomplishments so let it be stated clearly there are no shortcuts with god none zilch he doesn't need our foot on his accelerator he doesn't need our help with his plans if god wants jacob to have the blessing jacob will have the blessing rebecca doesn't have to work things around doesn't have to connive jacob does not need to deceive if god wants jacob to have the mantle it's as good as done all they had to do was wait and trust what are you seeking what do you feel like you're needing what do you feel like you're wanting maybe a spouse then can i urge you just wait on the lord a new job then can i urge you wait on the lord vengeance can i urge you wait on the lord are you waiting on your ship to come in your career to look up your business to take off then just wait on the lord serve him stay honest keep your knees bent your eyes up just wait on the lord his timing is always right amen his plan is always best amen his plan never includes deception never includes manipulation never destroys people never requires compromise of personal morality he never badgers he never battles he never belittles he never bruises people and if you're doing that to get your way then you stepped out of god's will you may think he's slow to act i urge you just trust him and wait and pay for your own phone calls and if you don't have the money then don't make them go to your dorm room sit there and study that's what somebody needed to tell 18 year old max because 18 year old max came to learn that the true love of his life was only a local call away and she was right there on the campus and now we've been married 40 years gracious heavenly father now as we receive this message we we receive it like seeds on the soils of our hearts that it would go deep into our hearts by the power of your holy spirit and bear fruit fruit of honesty fruit of forgiveness fruit of trust the fruits of the spirit peace and love and joy patience and kindness thank you help us now as we receive it in the name of christ we pray and all the church said why don't we uh stand we've got about three or four minutes we've cleared just to pray just to pray we have a bible verse we're going to put on the screen it's from psalm 139 a great prayer in which king david invited god to investigate his life maybe you'll find this verse helpful as you pray maybe you'd like to be prayed for uh maybe you've got a physical affliction or emotional struggle or maybe you're worried about something let us pray for you the way we're going to do this this morning i'm going to ask all of you who want to be prayed for just to come down to the front and make a group here in the front and i'll be glad to offer a prayer on your behalf however you pray if you're staying in your seats you're coming to the front this is the time for you to talk to your heavenly father i'll pause for a couple of minutes and give people time to come to the front if anyone wants to [Music] so [Music] [Music] so [Music] let's all continue now in a spirit of prayer gracious lord we bless you we bless you we turn our hearts toward you father asking that you would look upon us with kindness this world in which we live seems so weary wounded hostile afflicted by a pandemic infected by anger and division suffering from ancient hostilities of of racism and hatred we heavenly father beg you to beg you to look upon us with kindness [Music] you have these your children who have come before you we ask for healing upon them lord we ask for your miraculous touch we ask lord god that you look kindly upon marriages that need to be saved upon bodies that are struggling with disease upon minds that are growing weary with the years upon those who are finding it difficult to sleep to love to trust to believe we ask you heavenly father for gifts of mercy and strength you've told us to come to you you've told us to cast all our cares upon you because you care about us you've told us to be anxious for nothing but in everything by prayer and petition with thanksgiving to let our requests be made known to you and so we do heavenly father hear our prayers hear our prayers we thank you now lord for these reminders that you've given to us are not really the most pleasant thing to be reminded that we don't shouldn't take shortcuts but lord we needed the reminder and we receive it we receive it and we bless you now in the name of jesus christ and all the church said amen amen god bless you god bless you god bless you we're going to receive communion now if you're watching online this would be a good opportunity for us you to get the bread and the cup the rest of us let's be seated we invite all believers now to come and celebrate the communion that we have with our our lord jesus christ we'll sing a song and then we'll celebrate together [Music] out of the wilderness into your deliverance [Music] oh look where i'm standing now look where i'm standing now i stand on the chain breaking the mirror of jesus [Music] get by your mighty hands [Music] [Applause] [Music] look where i'm standing [Music] [Music] well god certainly took no shortcut when it came to his love for his children redeeming restoring he gave all that he had to give when he gave his one and only son for god made him who had no sin to be sin so that we could become the righteousness of god he didn't take a shortcut and now [Music] look at where we stand firmly in the righteousness of god because of his sacrifice on the cross so now we remember the death burial and resurrection of jesus christ [Music] take an evil and this cup which represents the blood that was poured out on our behalf [Music] it's a symbol of the freedom that we have in christ jesus take and drink [Music] can we just celebrate that freedom that we have in jesus christ as we continue to sing hallelujah i'm free hallelujah i'm free jesus my savior rescued me hallelujah i'm free [Music] hallelujah i'm free [Music] jesus my
