hi everyone insert your local NYC guide and today I'm continuing my neighborhood series I have done Greenwich Village and I've done Dumbo and today I'm here in midtown Manhattan and I'm going to be showing you the best things to do eat see and much much more in this perfect one day itinerary but before I get into that there are some things that you need to know if you're visiting midtown Manhattan such as is it safe how much does it cost where is it which by the way if you don't know where midtown Manhattan is kind of in the name if you would like more details up midtown Manhattan and then download my midtown Manhattan I have an itinerary that I'll be going over today but also even more of my top tips and suggestions on things to do here in this town so that will be linked below so if you would like to skip to the itinerary you can go to this time stamp right here but until then let's dive into the things you need to know when coming to midtown Manhattan [Music] so where is midtown Manhattan well they're supposed to be on where exactly it is but the encyclopedia of New York State defines it between 34th Street and 59th Street and 3rd Avenue so how do you get to midtown Manhattan well almost every train goes there it'd be easier if I just box out this area here then literally go through all the trains any train in this area goes to midtown Manhattan which makes it great cuz you'll never get lost going here how much does it cost to come here again technically there's no cops - come here besides the subway ride but if you want to live here at the median cost for a one-bedroom apartment is three thousand one hundred and twenty five dollars and if you're looking for a cup of coffee you're gonna be spending between two to three dollars on average what is the culture here in short touristy obviously I mean it's Times Square area but also the surrounding area the thing is few locals visit here or live here because this is really where all the tourists stay when they're visiting a lot of the major hotels are here it's also way more fast-paced than anywhere else in the city and that's because 300,000 people walk through here every single day which is actually kind of cool in a way because it's very international there's tons and tons of languages spoken at all times there's just always something going on in this area is it safe well that is a complicated answer there's a very large police presence here because there's so many people and this area has one of the highest crime rates but that doesn't mean it's necessarily the least safe it's just stats because there's more people here than anywhere else so there's generally more crime most of the crime is just petty crime like theft so it's not a big deal don't be nervous there's also a police station in the middle of Times Square the main thing you need to look out for is all of the scammers there's so many scams in Times Square I have an entire video about it so check that out before coming here it is absolutely essential to watch that video to arrest me you do not want to come to Times Square without watching that video so let's get into the history because the history of Midtown is as rich as this free of the rest of the city and it's all a little bit different but back in the 1700s this area looked nothing like it does today in fact most of this area was Potter's fields which is kind of like a cemetery and farmland there was literally no buildings here at all in the 1800s you started to see a lot of the wealthier people moved from lower Manhattan to Midtown and build beautiful mansions along Fifth Avenue however many of those mansions no longer exists today all right now we're getting a little bit into the time square history because after all that is the most popular place here in Midtown so let's begin in 1904 all of this area was called Longacre square and then the New York Times moved here and renamed it two-timed we're in the 1920s we reached the glamour age here in Times Square and this area was known as the Great White Way with many many Broadway shows going on on 42nd Street by the 1970s 42nd Street which was once a beautiful beautiful Street was now overrun by sex shops and crime it had tons of drug addicts on it it was not a good place to be in 1995 something incredible happened right behind me you're gonna see the New Amsterdam theater which is home to Disney theatrical and Disney theatrical signed a lease at a low rate with the agreement that they would help turn around the area and it did just that it's considered one of the most impactful things that happened in changing Times Square from crime to deliver today Times Square is one of the most visited places on earth and is known for its bright lights and commercial environment [Music] start your day out in one of the most iconic buildings in the city this is Grand Central and this is a landmark building but the thing about Grand Central is most people think it's just a train station but it is so much more than a train station they have so many restaurants a great market over 50 different shops there's tons of things to do here one of my favorites is doing one of their audio tours to learn more about the history one of the interesting facts about this building is that it was built three times and you'll learn tons of other really crazy details about it and their audio tour looks like this you get it from a booth down stairs it cost $13 to do the audio tour and it takes between 30 minutes and an hour depending on how much time you want to spend at each place it also comes in seven languages so if you speak a different language they might have your language these are the flat these are the languages that comes in so if you speak one of those languages you could also do the tour in that language if you prefer a guided tour they also do guided tours here at 12:30 so you just have to flip around the itinerary a little bit depending on what you want to do but the audio tour is great so I just recommend doing that because the OTO to audio tour is twelve dollars and the guided tour 13 dollars so it's always good to save money right so grab a meal downstairs and get the audio tour you can actually eat on the go if you're feeling like being a New Yorker that's the style we do it grab a bagel get the audio tour and your morning is starting off right [Music] after having a wonderful audio tour GrandCentral you can come right down the street to the New York Public Library this is another landmark building here in New York this one costs nine million dollars to complete and was fished in 1911 and the opening day they had 50,000 people coming in here today you still have a lot of visitors and they also have some really cool exhibitions that pop up and the great part about it everything is free directly behind the New York Public Library is this awesome place this is Bryant Park and I love Bryant Park because there's tons of free things to do here so right after checking out the free New York Public Library you can come directly here they have ping-pong they have this like ball game I've never seen before where you throw it they have Broadway shows sometimes in the summer but if you're here in the winter they have a winter village with an ice skating rink it's actually the only place that you can ice skate for free except you do have to pay for ice skate rentals I have more on what to do in the winter here and my winter guide but this is definitely a nice place to visit since you're going to be passing right by it for lunch you can come to one of my favorite places in New York City is Lenore oh no and I'm so excited because they've expanded from there Chelsea Market location and now they have one in Times Square and they are they have two more locations that are popping up look it up once this video comes out they'll be live but you got to come here my signature order is what kind of a setup and apoyo silo taco so let's go get it done the feast is here we got my favorite tacos I got my diet coke let's eat this is heaven this is like the most authentic Mexican tacos you can find in the city and it's cheap too the price for tacos start at 350 [Applause] we're never gonna find a deal this cheap man's this high-quality [Music] all right even though I'm not a big fan of Time Square I've made that clear in my tourist trap video you know you can't come here without visiting Times Square so I'm including it right after tacos just stop in take a quick selfie and now get out bye [Music] next up on our one day itinerary is this lovely spot this is Fifth Avenue now Fifth Avenue is known for its fabulous shopping many of which are designer stores but the good news for those of you that are on a budget like me is that there's also more stores popping up that are more budget-friendly like there's an H&M there's an Taylor so whether you're on a budget or not this is a great spot just to check out because iconic I mean that's the thing about Midtown you have so many iconic spots walk up this tab also for those Bundys shoppers out there I have a whole video on a budget shopping in New York you can see it right here and also link below with tons of my favorite stores to shop at including a few that you can get really high quality designer goods for less than $100 so definitely don't miss that video okay Mel C or the next spot keep walking all the way up Fifth Avenue and you will stumble upon this beautiful structure this is st. Patrick's Cathedral and this is the largest gothic Roman Catholic cathedral in the United States the cornerstone for this Cathedral was laid in 18:58 it's named after Saint Patrick the patron saint of Ireland and was the name of that because there was more Irish immigrants coming to the city in the mid-1800s when this was built now to learn even more about this they actually do audio tours here as well that's one of the cool things about many of these iconic places in the city so you can do an audio tour or you can head across the street to top of the rock so I'm going to see what's out of the rocks for our next stop [Music] once you cross the street you're gonna be here at Rockefeller Center Rockefeller Center is humongous and there's a lot to see here so feel free to explore the area but one thing you cannot miss is going to the top of the rock where you will have absolutely epic views of the city there's two ways to see this you can go during the day time which is $41 or you can go during sunset however with this itinerary I recommend you go during the day sunsets very crowded though it is very beautiful it's also $51 so it's about ten dollars more so check that out enjoy and I'll see you the next location for dinner I recommend coming here to this very special place this is called the view and it's on top of the Marriott Marquis in the center of Times Square this place is different than any other restaurant in New York and that's because it rotates as you're eating now for those of you that are like oh my god am I gonna be sick no you're not gonna be sick it moves it very very slowly so that you get a beautiful view 360 view of the Manhattan skyline as you eat now they do a three-course menu that you've got to do because we're going to a Broadway show tonight and you got to go here early so come here 5:30 five o'clock have your time get the three-course menu I have some of the dishes in front of me so right here I have there Meyer lemon and arugula ravioli and then we also have the burrata and heritage tomato salad but we're gonna be getting a lot of different dishes tonight so I'll see you at the main course all right my main course is here and I got this beautiful filet mignon which I cannot wait to try it looks super tender and tasty I also got you know a glass of wine to go with my meal and besides the great thing about this menu is they have so many options I mean you name it they have it from chicken two salmon two lamb two flame mignon the surf and turf and much much more and one of the things that the waiter showed me was that on the napkins it actually shows you like what you're looking at as you kind of spin around there the restaurant so depending on where we are I can literally see what building we're at what's just super cool all right let's take a bite of this look at that oh yeah that is tender everything you want pulling when you're on to be perfection I'm going to enjoy this as filet mignon I will see you at the Broadway show tonight because it's gonna be epic alright see you later in the evening of course CEO to see a Broadway show my favorite probably show is this one it's Harry Potter and the cursed child this is an award-winning show they won six Tony Awards and a record-breaking nine Laurence Oliver Awards which is the most prestigious award in Britain now for this one it's a two-part series so if you go to part one you have to go to part two and trust me I know it may sound long but it's not it goes really quickly now to get tickets to any probably show there are many different ways to do that I have a whole video on it but if you want to see this show I recommend using todaytix especially if you're on a budget because with today's takes first off it's an app that has the best deals on Broadway it's what I use to buy all of my show tickets but they also have an exclusive Harry Potter lottery where you can get tickets to both shows for $40 of course you have to win the lottery to do that but if you want to go here and if you're the budget that's a great option if you're not on a budget you can get some of the best seats in the House by going straight to the box office or buying the tickets online now tonight there's a special event happening here after the show so I'm so excited I will see you at the event I'm here in the middle of Times Square the special event where Harry Potter the first aisle is about to begin no idea what it is but there's like so much excitement so many people everywhere it's we'll get these people and I think I saw some numbers on the cast here they look familiar to me oh my god charges to partners here the cast are all behind me they're distant markers over here one of the celebrities lunacy I've no idea let's just keep looking behind me we have James Snyder's he plays Harry Potter in the show he's getting interviewed right there okay this is theory number two they're gonna take over all of the billboards in Times Square what some type of multimedia presentation that's right I'm putting it in there for the record my very number two was correct that they were going to take over time [Music] oh my god but it gets like super dark right now test tech birth child NYC if you see the show that segment that was crazy I have never seen anyone take over Times Square and I used to work in Time Square for five years and their Jessica Parker that the cat's here it is performances just go see Harry Potter the cursed child it's my favorite show if you like Harry Potter you're gonna have a good time the show you might want to cap out the evening with a lovely drink and I recommend it coming here to the run house this is a high chronic rum bar here in Midtown it's been open since 1949 and they have live jazz music and sometimes opera I know surprising every single night from 9:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. this is one of their classic rum cocktails so I ordered the escape and this is very similar to a pina colada santa teresa from coconut cream pineapple juice and sweet vermouth let's give it a try that is exactly like a pina colada that's exactly what I'm looking for right now they also have like bites so I got a pretzel so I was feeling a little hungry after the show so thanks for joining me and I'll see you in the next neighborhood thanks for watching if you like this video remember to watch my other NYC videos I have tons of them on things to do eat see and much much more follow me on Instagram it's Sarah funky and remember if you want a printable version or a downloadable version of this itinerary you can get that
