His wife. She gets in deep with loan sharks to feed her addiction but when she can’t pay they slice up her face. To show that he doesn’t care about her scars, he cuts up his OWN face in solidarity, but she leaves him because he disfigured himself.

Joker frames the story as his wife being the gambler. That being said, his story is a bit unconventional... Gambling addiction while in a relationship is usually a problem that the man will have. And, Joker is a fucked up guy who loves to twist facts to fit his narrative. So, it could be that he was the actual gambler, and he just called his wife a "gambler" because she made a gamble by marrying him/staying with him. Plus, Joker never wants to admit fault.

Additionally, we see that Joker is constantly making high-risk decisions, he has a great poker face, and he is really frivolous with the way he uses money. His personality definitely matches the profile of a gambler.

That said, it could also be that the story of his wife was a complete fabrication, and he never had a wife at all. While Heath Ledger was a hot guy, his version of the Joker isn't exactly a catch, or honest for that matter.
