Not Sure if Sump Pump is Working? Here's What To Do!

hey everybody it's dino with one tom plumber i'm back with another plumbing tip video for you this time we're going to talk about your sump pump and how do you test it to make sure it's actually working [Music] it's really easy to test the sump pump to make sure it's working you take a big old five gallon bucket of water and you pour that water in and your sump pump should start working now here's the reason why there is a float in your sump pump the float goes up and down based on the water level when the water level starts getting too high it moves that float up which triggers your sump pump to turn on so all you got to do if you don't know if it's working or not is to take the water pour it in that float will move up or you can reach in and actually pull up the float but this is probably a better way to do it just put water in it until the float triggers and see if it turns on let's try it all right did you hear that that turned on the sump pump that means this bad boy is working now what about if it didn't do that there are some other things we can try all right now we're going to get into a little troubleshooting let's pretend that that sump pump didn't work when i tested it so what do you do now couple things you want to look at number one you want to look at the outlet that it's plugged into are you actually getting electricity into it the only way to do that on this kind this should actually be a gfci type outlet which has a little green light on it which tells you if electricity is flowing through it the other way to make sure that this is working is to take a a lamp or any other kind of electrical fixture some kind of light plug it in and make sure it's working then you know it is so that's one way to troubleshoot there's another way to troubleshoot there are a couple different ways to reset your sump pump and test it at the same time so on this little device that comes with the sump pump and you'll probably have something like this with your sump pump there's a little test button it resets the pump so let me you can see it's water is working uh being reset basically so that it's all ready to go another way to do that if you don't have something like that let's come back up here to the outlet look just like a computer if you think about it when your computer has a glitch in it something happens to it it's not working right sometimes you just unplug it and plug it back in so that's what we're gonna do wait about 10-15 seconds plug it back in electricity will start flowing back in and then you can test it again using the water method lifting the arm method or just testing and resetting if you have this in particular on your sump pump so there you have it that's all you need to test your sump pump i hope you don't need to but if you do you now know how to like comment share as always we really appreciate you following us on our youtube channel it really helps a lot of people at least i hope so let me know if not have a merry christmas it's coming up soon i'll see you next week this is dino with one tom plumber [Music] you
