holy it's real okay uh tell me when you see it there that clown doesn't move it's bad and it's required to be a player it took it took them all i'll get them out we gonna get you today oh yeah he's not a hey guys what's happening niat here with film comics explained and as voted for by everyone in the latest paul today we'll be exploring nope the 2022 sci-fi horror film written and directed by jordan peele starring keith david daniel kahlua kiki palmer stephen yoon michael wincott and brandon pereira it revolves around two siblings struggling to maintain their family's ranch and legacy following the unexpected death of their father under mysterious circumstances the pair become convinced that there's a ufo above and enact a plan to capture the evidence in this video we're going to explore the film's themes the ending and the alien creature that terrorizes the nearby lands the film opens on the sound stage a fictional 90s sitcom goldy's home while we're not given much context the titular chimpanzee gordy is covered in blood and appearing distressed we then head to the present day where we meet ranch owner otis heywood senior and his son otis jr who run haywood's hollywood horse ranch hayward is a marvelous horse whisperer that trains and handles them for film and television productions the family also claims the unnamed jockey in plate 626 from edward maybridge's animal locomotion series of photographs was their ancestor and that the business has been run by the family for generations as oj brings some equipment in his father who's training their temperamental horse ghost tells him that they should keep their heads out the clouds he also asks where oj's sister was saying that emerald should be helping them on the farm after reassuring his son that they should just keep working hard and that everything will be okay they both hear the sound of screaming from above hayward then looks up to the sky as the area begins to rain down inanimate objects unfortunately a coin hits him in the eye ultimately killing him his horse ghost is also found with a set of keys impelled into its skin and the entire event is written off by the locals as a freak incident involving junk falling from a plane but his children especially oj are not so convinced regardless they try to keep the business afloat and maintain the family legacy oj had worked very closely with his father and developed a deep understanding and compassion for the animals under their care in contrast to her older serious and more reserved brother emerald is loud and overconfident feeling jaded for not having received the same training as oj emma's taken a path towards the glitz and glamour of hollywood and although oj was committed to their family legacy emerald selfishly admitted that this was her side job six months later while filming a commercial with prominent cinematographer atlas holst despite oj insisting they're not scare as false lucky they do the opposite and it nearly kicks the head of the casting crew and they frighten it leading to them getting fired with the ranch's financial problems worsening they've begun selling their horses to ricky duke park in many ways dupe is at the core of the film with his backstory and current life personifying the main themes of nope ricky dupe is a washed-up former child star desperately clinging to fame and relevance by running a self-exploitative theme park called jupiter's claim based on his role as jupiter in the film kid jupiter turns out he was one of the two survivors of the incident we witnessed at the start the other being mary jo elliott who played his sister haley on the show gordy's home after being startled by the pop of a balloon the titular chimpanzee brutally attacked several of the casting crew ricky hid under the table as the chimp violently beat his on-screen mum and dad to death and hayley to nearly an inch of her life the chimp then found him and extended his hand for a fist bump before being shot dead by authorities while jupa's not physically harmed this caused deep psychological trauma making him feel as though he had a unique connection to the animal something he tries to replicate with the alien leading to catastrophe oj ends up selling 10 of their forces to dupe with the intention of buying them back when they have the money dupe also reminds him that his offer to buy the whole ranch is still on the table although the short-sighted m encourages him to accept obviously oj is unhappy about the idea of destroying their family legacy for some quick cash the pair are polar opposites but with some communication and a shared goal the siblings will find that they can do anything they set their mind to as they reminisce about their dad over some drinks emerald points to a photo of him with a horse named jean jacket it's here that we realized the root of their resentment em was supposed to train jean jacket on her ninth birthday but the responsibility was given to her older brother her father was under a lot of pressure for the scorpion king's shoot and although they ended up using camels on the film instead this ultimately made her feel as though she didn't belong when the pair spot their father's horse ghost outside oj goes out to investigate he approaches ghosts but the sound of screaming from her presence above scares the horse away again as oj follows where it went he's treated to a weird light spectacle and more sounds of screaming above that cause him to drive back with the siblings going over the footage on their security camera and noticing a blackout oj asks him if she believes in a bad miracle which was essentially the explanation everyone had given them about their father's strange death he reveals the horse vanished and the thing he saw was huge he also tells her it was too fast and silent to be a plane and realizing they might be able to make some serious money if they can record proof they recruit angel torres to set up surveillance cameras and help them capture the oprah shot they require luckily for them angel is a ufo enthusiast with a number of wild theories while setting up the equipment he tells oj the aliens could be intergalactic travelers looking for peace futuristic humans coming back in time to stop us from ruining everything all world killers planetary destroyers that have been watching us waiting to beam us up and make a move after setting everything up the enthusiastic angel leaves and that very evening the siblings are pranked by jup's three boys dressed up as aliens right after this oj finds a ghost outside again and tries to bring him back to the stable once again as they get near the house something spooks the horse away when oj looks up he sees a tornado of sand being swallowed up into a cloud obsessed with the investigation angel calls them to let her know that one of the cameras were out due to electrical interference and that the other one had a praying mantis in front of it preventing them from getting clear footage as both oj m then catch side of the moving cloud his sister yells at him to run to shelter the ufo then scours the skies menacingly before returning to the clouds we then cut to the past with oj and his father hayward tells him that ghost is acting territorial and states that some animals ain't fit to be trained waking o.j up from his dream realizing they were not prepared for this mission the siblings call atlas holst the renowned cinematographer from their previous shoot offering him the project of a lifetime the opportunity to capture the impossible shot when angel comes back to the farm the next day he looks up and tells them he noticed a nearby cloud that never moved leading them to speculate that is where the ufo is hiding what they soon discover is that rather than being a spacecraft controlled by aliens the ufo is actually a giant aerial creature nicknamed jean jacket by the group it initially appears as a classic flying saucer that pulls up its prey it has essentially chosen the hayward ranch as its territory stationing itself in one spot over a hill and obscuring its shape in colour to look like a cloud interestingly gene appears to be inspired by the lovecraftian monster race known as the flying polyps first appearing in hp lovecraft's the shadow out of time published in 1936 the flying polyps are creatures from outer space described as aggressive and predatory much like gene they are flying monsters that become invisible whenever they want they're capable of manipulating wind and weather existing only in isolated parts of the world from the australian outback to the mojave desert they can be noticed by the horrible whistling and screaming sounds they make as they pass by and are fluid in form and able to change and distort in shape and size the flying polyps also attack people by using vortices of wind to suck them up into the sky function with some degree of non-euclidean geometry and the kicker they really really hate to be noticed and become violently aggressive towards anyone that perceives them having said that i'm not entirely convinced that gene is an alien but rather a creature native to earth kelsey rutledge the scientific consultant that advised pylon decreases design and behaviour named it ocular nimbus adequates kelsey explained that jordan wanted to make something that was unique but still in the realm of scientific possibility and so they used the weird attributes of marine animals from the square iris of octopus the ability of cuttlefish to mesmerize prey through a form of hypnosis they added chromatophores of cephalopods essentially colour-changing pigment cells that enable them to camouflage against any surface and they also included the geometry of a crazy creature called a giant livation as well as the ability of bluefin tuna to expand and retract their fin all of which are elements seen in gene throughout its various forms after eating some hikers the uap essentially regurgitated their inorganic remains including the coins and keys that ran down on the family at the very beginning oj eventually deduces it as a predatory territorial creature that eats anything that looks directly at it and we as the audience observe that it moves through some form of electrostatic lift organs and tissue that enable ionic propulsion fills to generate air currents but what the group don't realize is that during the six months it has been here dupe has been feeding it horses regularly he's been exploiting both the horses in the uap to maintain the same admiration of an audience that he received as a child star it's clear the horrific incident with gordy has fractured his mind the theme park is not just about kid sheriff but there's also a secret back room dedicated to gordy's home filled with rare memorabilia from the show falsely believing that he survived the gaudy incident because they shared a special bond jupiter's convinced himself that a similar kinship now exists with jean jacket when watching gordy move about the wrecked set park noticed one of his co-stars shoes inexplicably standing upright the standing shoe which he now keeps on display is an example of a bad miracle and the impossible shot the haywards discussed throughout park's misplaced belief that he had a special bond with gordy and jean jacketer contrasted with the life experience of oj who grew up taming unruly animals with his father oj's experience has informed him to respect animals with the knowledge that they can either kill you or work with you depending on your competency this sets ricky up to make the fatal mistake of underestimating a creature that's too dangerous to wrangle looking directly in the eyes of some animals is a sign of dominance which means that the family were attacked because they were trying to stand up to gordy ricky thought he was saved because of his friendship to the chimp when in reality he survived because his gaze was fixed on the upstanding shoe when gordy went on his rampage gordy then interpreted ricky not looking directly into his eyes as a sign of submission which is why it didn't attack him misled by this bad miracle he began feeding horses to gene which is why it made this area's home worse still he now plan on introducing his live audience to the creature using one of the horses as bait of course this ends in disaster not realizing looking directly at gene was a sign of aggression the entire audience including ricky stare at the entity and has sucked up into the belly of the beast before being devoured slowly this meant the cacophony of screams we'd been hearing from above throughout the film where people and animals being digested it's also important to note that gene in the plight of ricky is representative of the hollywood system a spectacle that sucks people in and spits them out and how the pursuit of capturing the impossible spectacle without an understanding of the risk can lead to tragedy tying into references to siegfried and roy and the visual callbacks to the charla nash incident where a woman was mauled by her french chimp in a bit of serendipitous luck as the team prepare their equipment for the oncoming storm oj finds a pamphlet to droop starlight lasso experience and heads there to find his horse lucky and survive the attack the only problem is the creature is waiting above and soon moves down to consume the horse knocking oj unconscious waking up that night he jumps in his car and tries to call em and angel to warn them as the lovecraftian predator returns to the ranch and spits debris and blood down all over the heywood home including a fake horse and flags that upset its stomach and pissed it off a direct reference to the biblical verse shown at the beginning of the film i will cast abominable filth upon you make you vile and make you a spectacle rescuing the crew he drives them to a diner where they go over what happened despite being freaked out by the incident with the haywards about to lose the ranch and their horses they decide to head back and get the shot that they were after much to their surprise they returned to find holst at their home staring up at the sky seeing the destruction around him and the odd behaviour of the cloud in front he agrees to help and so working together they formulate a plan to use oj as baiting get a good shot at the entity using a non-electrical camera he'd built they then begin setting up wacky inflatable tube men all over the ranch's visual sensors and music to lure it towards them but as they're about to begin a reporter from tmz arrives on a motorbike questioning him about the mysterious disappearances reported nearby she explains they're about to do a camera test for a commercial but the reporter presses her stating the entire area was a blur on google maps likely the result of electromagnetic interference from the creature unfortunately the jabroni rides off in the direction of the cloud causing it to move towards him and once he gets close enough the power on his bike gives out flinging him to the ground and despite oj's attempt to help him mr tmz is consumed by gene oj then lures gene towards the cameras and just as it's about to swoop down and consume him he makes gene change its mind by deploying a flag behind him obsessed with capturing the impossible holston stupidly breaks from the plan and willfully walks up to gene allowing himself to be sucked up as he records angel is also nearly devoured as well but survives thanks to the barbed wire and flag wrapped around his body which causes gene to spit him back out giving him a chance to escape oj lures gene towards him as she races to jupiter's claim it's here the entity morphs from a disc shaped ufo to an amorphous cross between a biblical angel a jellyfish and a carnivorous weather balloon tying up all the different types of ufo sightings throughout america's history thinking quickly emerald and unhooks a giant balloon mascot of duke to distract gene seeing what it thought was a threat it takes debate and swallows the balloon whole as em manages to take a photo of gene using the wishing well camera after being lodged in its throat when gene attempts to fly away the balloon expands inside gene's intestinal tract causing the beast to explode before collapsing in celebration and looks out to a sign saying out yonder and sees what appears to be the ghost of oj sitting on lucky a whole heap of people drawn in by the spectacle then arrive indicating that others had also seen gene's weird final form along with angel and presumably tells the public about their experience and shows them the picture they had with the biological matter of jeans spread across the area it's implied that they're able to sell the photo and save the ranch at the same time other people likely had a better shot or raw video footage of gene's final moments m also does not have the experience or desire to continue the family legacy so i'm not sure if oj's sacrifice was really worth it in the end of course i'd love to hear your thoughts below well that's all for today folks a
