this local genius booster was a gift from Mark Brown at the a loved man Meetup he said that he'd used that a few times now just stopped working and some of the functions work you can use the lights on it but it's not putting anything out it's going so through this emotions and when you push this button in it kind of does stuff but it doesn't really do stuff yeah it's it behaving very oddly so let's take it to this now if I recall knuckle seemed too severe they seem to present themselves has been one of the sort of higher quality brands and most of the units that makes it up quickly really noises I have to say this unit is not making clicky really really noises and I don't know if that's just because this is perhaps one of the smaller units a part of this can be used still it has a power bank which is what Mark was using it for but it just won't make any attempt to start cars at all I wonder if that's just because something is filled or maybe it's been air well I think these things most of these ones have a lots of protection in them left so I'm not going to take that quite seriously they got all the relays and stuff like see is this going to come apart as I got the screws out completely mmm it's not easily coming apart I think those screws are oh yeah they're all this if it just needs believe it resinize buggers FreshBooks Roger rate into huge lithium packin sake oh there we go there we go oh okay I'm not seeing a really I'm seeing a I'm seeing a slightly spongy lithium pack oh that's interesting well if that's puffed up it might just be a heat shrink but we'll cut how open afterwards if needs be oh I wonder of those be problems where there's what actually holds these terminals in that's a bit scary I'll have to make sure I don't short this out accidentally oh right that may be the problem let's see if there you can actually see this I'll zoom in on it this is cracked this thing has seen a bit of current and the heat is actually caused by word failure okay right let's say zoom back out then and investigate this I'm going to be very careful about these leads because they just pop her apparently I don't want to shorten together because that would get very exciting very quickly oh that's not actually fully popping out that is a kind of scary and what about this one oh really want to do this yes I do really hold on let's pull this one out Bob trying not to shorter to the adjacent one is this the correct way to do this it's probably not this is probably going to end terribly hope it's out I think I made just a bland tip I don't know if this thing's going back together again afterwards particularly if that plaque is puffed up very disappointing because I thought local was like you know so a prominent brand unless this is an early model before the discover that things happened because I don't see really in this and let's pull this out then - I should have pulled that for a tune-up that wasn't very clever was it not to worry I can just cover that uncover that slip the plastic off it's got a one-lane connector in there so that's circuit boards separate I know they've just jump it onto the board of that can I get this connector off but say well that red is probably just coming straight from battery okay I'll just cover this more entirely to avoid any little explosions is this going to come out oh it's coming out that's good or bad depending what happens oh this is oh that's actually a bit of David has just dropped off I presume that's diode that may not be diode oh there's maybe more feds I'm looking at the connections now and it's not just got them calmed at the bottom I think that's that's output switching device that would explain why it wasn't putting anything out okay right let's see if I can unplug the battery I will investigate this a bit further so that connection comes off there's the batteries at balance connector there's a little air temperature sensor on stuck in the side of battery pack and hold on let's see if I can get this out now lots of opportunity for shooting things out here - I'll cover that I'll use the tape and the black one there on abusable freshly that's bear or I could just plug a pause to the negative together that would just not end well with it but deep down you want me to do it deep down under one set fire to my workshop right now and can I get that out nip that cable tie like you say isn't actually going to come out it very easily undertale what and wrong look with this things well packed to bish converters one for charging and one for discharging it for the 5 volt output one for the Fievel in to boost up to 12 volts I'm guessing can this battery pack come off let's say I get a little temperature sensor killed off temperature sensor is now off lots of opportunity for the school to go up it's got Bank of those air on the bottom or that die of this time so that's the diodes in the bottom here they get three diodes with this all calm and alarm going through the diodes and then they've got the switching device output which looks as though it may have met its maker I'm guessing if this one's blue and it's LED then it's much like the other ones there aren't going to switch so P as well they've probably been nuked internally as well yeah the case is cracked on that one as well this that these that could points with a bad sign let's see where they are BN 41 r BN 41 R and the diodes are PFR is an 840 l 4 v CT so else we go on this look at the buttons which were kind of the one of the buttons a per button was a bit chunky it was cleaning up a wee bit and is this up twice a liters possibly coupling to this side monitoring the voltage in that side perhaps and lots and lots of chips so I'm guessing these little ones are probably boost converters MP one five eight four yen I've got everything it's lots and lots of different chips what's the main processor hall tech HT 4 6 R or six now I have to say even just sitting this thing seemed to self-discharge a modest rate some wonder if the battery has been nicked the only way we can find that Alastair carefully probe into the battery it feels puffy I think this may have seen quite a high load but then having said that I think the MOSFET can I suggest it's off and high load as well and I would have thought it canonical are that you know they may have gone short socket the MOSFET and then ultimately go an open socket with a shoe mount current flowing through them oh yeah that's puffed up that is puffed up in there it's not the usual flat lithium cell this whole pack is puffed up yeah so let's a get this cover off completely not that need to get the cover off completely but you know I'm just printer doing stuff like this I'll guess it's the same construction as the other pack that I blew up where there was a very solid it was lay each pack there were three lifting batteries which that on this one to make up the 12 volts and the other one that blew up when I shorted it out to be fair and it had the place instead of being wound that in the usuals of lithium where that is that is most unsavory looking that is all puffy indeed that all the cells have really nukes in that ooh that's a bit scary it's scary but also strangely pleased in a sort of it may go anymore in paperwork so yeah this must be so here's a USB charging port that comes in and there's what appears to be a boost converter here there's going to step that up to about the 12 volts there as needed to actually charge the battery pack and this one here is on the USB output so it's taking that 12 volts and it's stepping it back down again for five volts processor few buttons the main Bank of diodes here and then the MOSFETs in place there really no this is the only and local plaque I've come across with the MOSFETs in it possibly this is ply and the other ones all use the really and of course the modern packs of cheap generic eBay packs they all use the external module because it's the external modules us all the power spectrum component is the stuff that air it's the stuff that's going to beta it's going to feel most likely when an incident occurs so in some of the local packs I think they have a separate module for that electronics with it really for the high current F stuff but only of course in the external power banks of the this cheap eBay ones you can physically unplug the whole module that's all in a little dongle that just goes into the lithium pack which kind of saves space and also a means that if they're you know if it gets exposed to the point of it feels but the battery packs all right in theoretically you could another high current dongle I'm also looking at this over here and thinking that little 6.8 micro helium Henry inductor is probably four LEDs I thought they were more LEDs on that but there's just two on little satellite printed circuit boards just poking up it's interesting it's the EM it's quite interesting anyway it's that particularly the way it's filled and physically cracked all its MOSFETs first time seeing the MOSFETs being used and what an application like this possibly the last table ceiling being used an application like this too but yeah thanks mark that was a that was very interest to take to bits I was hoping it was going to be a simple fix but it's really not it has been absolutely blizzard
