BMW X5 here people say horrible things about them people say great things about them here's a real one that a guy bought used okay the original MSRP was 78 000 he paid 28 grand with 40 something thousand miles on it now this guy had worked on the assembly line of BMW and now he does stuff like testing them out he could take these things apart and put them back together again that's one of the reasons he bought the car and the other reason was he lives in South Carolina where strangely enough he found a British mechanic who works on these things who's honest now this may be the only BMW mechanic in the world who's honest as far as I'm concerned now you can see why people buy them because they're beautiful SUVs they're luxurious inside we'll go on the other side while we're walking around all other interiors and match it's got the Dual sunroof lots of room in the back it has a warning if you don't know any PMW mechanics and you buy one of these you better have a big piggy bank for repairs in the case of this one he has had to replace the air conditioning compressor between 40 and 80 000 miles it was Thirty One hundred dollars he had to replace the compressor the condenser the compressor just flat blew hole in itself even at that price if you're taking it to the dealer it would have been even more so you realize they're not cheap to fix but as you can see here's the injection system it is solidly built and inline six he took the plastic prep engine cover off and threw it away because he knows about machines that doesn't serve any purpose and truthfully hey he lives in South Carolina you do not want heat to build up on your engine you want it to dissipate now if you live in Alaska I can understand it it's freezing cold you want the heat to stay under there but where it's hot a beauty cover actually serves negative benefits it's hurting the vehicle by holding the heat in I mean look other stuff's plastic this little plastic line broke this little plastic hose here was 75 bucks let me tell you that's the tip of the iceberg on one of these as you can see here this is the charge hose right and this charge hose he tried an aftermarket one but it blew off so he had to go back to OEM and this hose was a 410 dollar part like I say tip of the iceberg on these things the parts cost a small fortune that's one of the reasons that he could get a 78 000 car for 20 something thousand dollars I don't care what kind of nonsense they give you about oh high resale values I remember way back decades ago BMW touted that they had the highest resale value in the world they climbed out their 528 version had the highest recently found some item that they barely sold many of and then the next year the prices went up so the resale value the other ones they claim was high this is more reality BMW somebody something grand for a new one forty thousand goes for 20 something Grand that is the reality of things because most people understand that BMW stands for bring my wallet when it comes time to maintain and fix the car and check out the tires he's got nice tires you know why he's got nice tires because this baby come with a stupid run flat tires and he said it rode like crap why would I want a car like this that rides like crap that's the big reason you really don't see too many cars anymore using run flat tires yeah I mean if you're worried that you know bad people are coming after you with guns you want to have bulletproof Tires I'd run flat yeah but if you want a nice car and it rides nice run flat tires stink so he went to normal good tires you can see these aren't crazy low profile they're normal tires normal rims they're not that crazy going to go flat every time you hit a curb or hit a pothole and blow out they're much better with these tires on them now this car has about every option there is but he went with the base Wheels he doesn't want to pop his tires on the potholes and deal with that crap but everybody wants these big wheels with low profile because the way they look this guy's smart he got this for the way that it drives the original idea of BMW was the ultimate driving machine and way back in the 60s hey they were driving circles around American cars and they kept the driving up it's just that they started going too much into stylistic crap that doesn't serve a purpose but take a look inside her up whoa look at that BMW oh boy that's a really cool little Merry Christmas and happy New Year now you can hear this is one strong running engine I'm gonna put my scan tool on a bus BMW and these six cylinder engines they can run forever smooth power delivery nice smooth idle a lot of companies have gone away from straight sixes not BMW these things are solid built and this one has an excellent transmission these size of chips even better now than it did when he bought it years ago they're solid build cars it's the plastic and electronic stuff that'll drive you nuts and as he just told me you gotta maintain them a lot of people don't maintain anything okay let's say you're gonna buy a Toyota right buy a Toyota change the oil every five ten thousand miles that's about it first hundred thousand miles 10 years that's probably all you're gonna have to do these you have to maintain if you don't maintain your car don't buy BMW ah we turn it all scan around diagnosis X5 us diagnosis in an auto scan here we go so here we go now we always expect a few codes we'll start out with the integrated chassis management it has one fault and the code is signal invalid from a transmitter from the electric power steering as the owner just said if you heard him stupid German stuff yes the Germans get carried away with just about everything we really don't care about that there's also an electronic power steering code let's look at that I bet it's the same code too watch electronic power steering torque sensor steering angle index faulty intermittent so we'll erase that too the headlight High system is two codes let's see what those codes are it's actually getting to be comical now okay intermittent connection headlight to CID no communication CID image data invalid or faulted so we'll erase those too so according to this the Adaptive headlights aren't adapting quite correctly but he has no problem seeing when he's driving nobody's flashing their brights at himself we'll see what else is on the computer we have the integrated Automatic Heating and AC okay that's got a fault too let's see what that fault is all right people you're not gonna believe this but this one is stratification flap motor front right locking has been detected you're gonna find this on any BMW as it ages you're going to get wacky codes up a Wazoo because of all the technology you wouldn't believe how many separate modules are on this thing and also takes is one little glitch realize all these computer modules work on five volt reference signals not much power and usually the amperage that goes through them is milliamps thousands of an amp hardly any little glitch and it'll do squirrely stuff like this so we'll go back We'll erase that too oh all the cards are gone except for this first one the integrated chassis management it erases but it immediately comes wreck on it'll be the same code for sure signal EPS is invalid the transmitter for the electronic power steering so according to this it's not getting the actual position of the power steering there's something wrong either in the wiring or the sensor itself but like I say it hasn't had any problem driving around so let's look at live band two live data battery voltage is fine remember these are color coded if anything's weird it's going to be color coded to be off but look at all this stuff ambient pressure ambient temperature throttle valve opening position charging pressure a wig of the German Surplus here the dad is here on this machine do I have to get a pressure gauge and hook it up fuel maybe it'll leak start a fire then you got to buy new gaskets this at least you get a good machine like this you can actually read it to see if it's working right or not I'll give them an A plus for that one and check this out variable camshaft timing exhaust position with engine running it's running it is 4.06 poor 0.22 it moves around a little curveball wrinkles means crank angle the angle of the crank yes they have to have everything in strange languages even on the machines that we Americans use so here we go with more the pressure I mean look at this running rough value pretty close to zero I mean look we're talking about you're off of 23 100th of a percent it's pretty good nothing of course there's no misfires they're all zero but the Germans go further than misfires they go to rough running values now that one was perfect for secondness point zero zero zero oh now it's point zero four nine point zero six and zero point zero zero again that's the Germans for you and their search for Perfection they find out valvie can get Klaus but they can't get the whole way yeah but you can see look at the amount of data this thing has so many modules on it it will make your head spin alternator temperature alternator excitation current you can really analyze these things if you want to go that far it shows you the whole Sensor One accelerator pedal voltage so it's a two pedal voltage they're really making sure you can analyze the stuff there's no arguing in ignition timing on a running engine it's running it has three degrees Kerbal Winkle 3.75 40.5 we'll wrap it up of course it'll go up then because it's got Advanced the timing well it's actually an excellent shape Kerbal Winkles are not so let's take it for Spin and of course it's got a killer stereo we got all kinds of wide angle signing a regular angle look we can see everything look here we go we're moving you can see we're moving I love these cameras now this baby even has night vision on the front let's hope it doesn't have an mg42 under the hood too of course as you can see here it's got a nice heads up display shows you how fast you're going and the speed limit where you are it's 25 miles an hour here comes in real Handy and this is broad daylight we're looking at this thing driving into the sun this really works well and now you can really see why people buy these things because they're fun to drive they're very smooth it's kind of like riding in a Magic Carpet Ride but hey they handle like a dream it's just the repairs that are nightmares so here we go to our little drag strip nobody's coming so well somebody's coming there you take these things out in the country out in the highway that's what they're made for and here we come to our little drag strip now realize this is just a six cylinder inline engine but the charm is not how to make them we'll check the shifting and we'll check the engine Ready Set Go [Music] smooth power delivery those shifts you can barely feel it shifting that's how they sell them you get in one of these and drive it you're gonna think oh man I'm in love with the BMW but it may be one of those love affairs that doesn't last over times and after your divorce your fifth life you might wonder Jay maybe I should stay away from those things this has got 81 000 miles on it now but hey you really don't have anything wrong with it at all other than all that crazy German nonsense angle this that and everything else it stairs fine it dries fine look at that passing gear you can pass people in this and the engine just keeps ticking they're pretty quiet inside we'll come to a stop then again here's the fan it's on low that's all I can hear there's a fan on low smooth as can be the six cylinder engines that's what they're made for smooth power now gas mileage not so much he gets around 20 miles a gallon but this is an all-wheel drive vehicle too it's heavy and it's fast so you know you can't whine about 20 miles a gallon if you're going to drive something like this and have some fun in it it's not made for gas mileage that's one of the reasons that straight six engines really aren't that much around because they do use a bit more fuel than a V6 configuration well and one of the reasons he went for the six cylinder was because he didn't want the V8 because he knows about BMWs he works for them and he knows the valve stems on the V8s go bad you gotta pull the engines it costs a lot of money my grandson's got a V8 BMW and yesterday though seals are gone and it burns oil they all do that it's a known flaw on these six cylinder engines no they're strong engines and listen to that sound yeah it's a six cylinder engine but boy it's got a nice home to it BMW X5 known as one of the most expensive vehicles in the world to take care of and maintain but this guy maintains it and he has a English mechanic who knows how to work on them you can see the technology from my fancy computer that's in these things it's absolutely insane but they are fun to drive the engines are solid the Transmissions are solid just realize you got to maintain them and you're gonna have to find yourself a mechanic like he did the English guy who understands a guy like me with equipment that can actually see what's going on understand how to fix these things because they are so complex now this is a 2006 BMW 6 series convertible they're beautiful looking cars and it has a massive BMW V8 engine with a lot of torque and this one is the Swanky ragtop but it's raining today so we're not going to bring it down let's have those insane low profile tires and you can see these are all chewed up that low they're always breaking the rims wrecking the tires so they are set up for performance they have massive Brakes in the front and in the back and this 17 year old one still goes like stink but do they Break Down super fast and cost super amounts of money to fix well I'll show you on this thing we'll stick it in put a neutral and start it up and it does sound great you can see the leather still in good shape now yeah they got tiny back seats no argument this is a two-door it's not a lot of room in the back but that's not what this is about it's a sports car it's a classic sports car it's got a V8 engine in the front it's got a six-speed transmission in the middle and it's rear-wheel drive a classic rear-wheel drive car but does it have classic BMW problems well let's get out the scan tool and find out and we'll see what happens now I'm using a giant scan tool because these things have all kinds of technology and this is going to pick it up a lot better than the cheaper ones will engine diagnosis we're waiting we'll see well the SOS system doesn't work it had a little warning on it it knows then it knows the BMW 650i 2006 and it's got all the information here so just turn off the ignition switch turn it back on systems and there's a lot of systems in one of these things let me tell you the CD changer even that's still surrounded by computer it's got a DVD player too unfortunately the screen doesn't work anymore into a ton of depth and not only will it make your head spin it'll make your wallet spin when you find out what it costs to fix the stuff when it breaks down all these crazy systems so we're going to do a smart scan here we go it's going through everything starting to find various problems in the red you got one two three four Reds and only two greens there's a lot of red stuff here so we'll work our way down seat occupancy detector for the passenger for the airbag that doesn't work anymore let's break all the time on BMWs it's actually a scale that weighs them you got to take the leather seats apart and everything to fix it costs a fortune so most people just leave it alone instrument cluster no message telephone well that makes sense because on the dash you saw it had SOS with an X across it which means that the warranting system if you're getting a wreck that doesn't work that works through the telephone system now I mean it's a luxury car that's not supposed to work but I mean what the heck we all have cell phones so you really don't worry about it but it's a lot Factory Card you expect that stuff to work well guess what it all breaks down in BMWs as they age now we'll check this the AC okay the fogging sensor isn't working yeah that's how crazy these things are and I'm not making this up they have a sensor that if they see it's fogging it turns the air conditioning on and we'll defog the thing right of course that's broken too you put all this technology in and it all breaks as time goes on and now we'll go down here see what the LM is okay license plate light is faulty uh who cares we can work on that they're coming on now so we really don't care these things often work on the ground interrupter type circuit and they'll often give you a false data that a light isn't working when it's actually working so as long as it works we don't care but it just shows the level they put in these things of insanity when they age they'll give you all kinds of warning for all kinds of things and some of them are still working but it tells you they aren't the next one malfunction in the CID due to periphery we already know we're turning it on here that's essential information display the only thing you get is a dark picture of a BMW then it goes blank this thing's gone out and believe me they cost a fortune even the plastic in BMWs is poorly made we got two more important things the main computer system okay the thermal oil level sensor isn't working and the variable intake system activation is acting up the oil level sensors on BMWs always break that's why you want one that has a dipstick so you can actually measure the oil to see what's in it that's why you buy these things used you're playing with dynamite baby playing with dynamite you never know what is going to go up price of BMW V8 engine it's probably 10 times what this car sold for used now the other one is variable intake system activator isn't working this baby has variable intake on it to get gas mileage power combination it could go one side or the other it can be short for one reason long for another by moving in that system isn't working correctly but on the other hand it's humongous V8 engine it still runs like stink people have been seen driving this thing around over 140 miles an hour it runs perfectly fine and really worry about it now if you live in a place where they do do emissions testing yeah that will make it fail the emissions test because the actuator's not working it has to do with pollution of the car but here in Tennessee nobody cares so still goes like stinking and driving so we'll get that out of the way and then look at the last thing no communication with door mirror on the driver's side okay so as we can see the electric adjustment for the mirror doesn't work anymore but as you can see if you push really hard you can adjust it with your finger the old style way now yeah luxury car is supposed to have this thing working here no matter what side you put it on it's not working but hey at least we can do that with our finger now you can see the level of complexity of these things and this is kind of the tip of the iceberg now we'll start it up at least the Stock's right up some data stream we'll select them all start looking at them so basically what we have to do is we have to pick 24 of them at a time three four five oh look at ones that are interesting it's got knock signals for every cylinder that's crazy all laid him he thought your car was bad with one or two knock sensors this baby has eight of them are looking at the data that we can battery voltage is good you can see the differential pressure on the intake manifold is changing around a little bit all by itself shows it as a minor problem so that intake manifold Runner stuff that moves and closes it isn't that bad and I mean this thing runs like a skull today so that's not something like I say you'd worry about you can't worry about technicalities like that on an older BMW it will make your head spin there are just so much things that can be off some it'll still run okay but fixing them would cost a fortune it would just be an endless line of little crappy things you'd have to fix a little bit worn Edge it does have like a hundred and four thousand miles on it and you can see the knock signals are slightly different from some of them 0.17 shows that there's more wear in some cylinders we rev It Up you see the figures change differently for different ones so the engine is a little bit warm now as I say it gives you some serious data you can see it gives you the Lambda value of different cylinders five through eight one through four it shows you the adaptation we'll do the adaptation for the other Bank of the engine and we'll do the rough running value of all cylinders well look at that then all right here we go you can see one through four and five days are almost the same point nine eight point nine seven the engine so it's worn reasonably evenly on each side and you just see one two four five through eight they're really close 1.08 1.06 and you can see all the eight cylinders okay the eight has less of an addition so seven is worn more than eight six is one two five a little bit less for a little bit more so if you have a problem these machines are set up in the software so you can find where the problem is but the problem is okay let's say one cylinder is really bad on these if you gotta take the engine apart work on that cylinder it is a small fortune nice to have the information techie guys love this stuff but when it does break down a fortune to repair of Timing System you can see it shows adaptation the position of the vano system for One bank for this is the other one a lot of stuff you can analyze with these the Germans are masters of analytics they give you all this information well realize that this vano system ever goes out a small fortune to repair it no if ands or buts we'll check out that vano system here's the adaptation of the exhaust one through four and five through eight and you can see okay it's adapting more degrees and the cylinders one through four there it is faster way so that shows the one through four and they're a little bit worn than the other ones for the exhaust let's see if the inlet was the same just barely the same because one through four is 132.3 and this is 132.1 that's pretty close you know then we'll look at the exhaust and they're relatively close 120 119.9 121 so that pretty well even on the exhaust and the intact van holster one through four is 100.199 101 91 101 they're relatively close more change on the 528 but they're close enough like I say this thing runs like stink it's just you never know how long they're gonna run like stink now I'm going to clear these trouble codes and you'll see the ABS one stayed so did the SRS and so did the instrument cluster because the instrument cluster is obviously broken it's not work it's particular ones are hard codes not soft codes they stay they won't erase but considering it still runs good well we know that the tire pressure monitoring system isn't working the tires have been changed they're probably batteries would have been dead anyways as old as it is we'll take it for a spin but as you can see now they don't paint them like they used to but it's almost completely faded off and yes it has these insane low low profile tires that I hate anyway I do realize as you see the gas is getting really low here and the warnings coming on now as you drive down the road you can hear that noise watch the more I turn to the left twice a little to the right noises a lot that means the wheel bearings in the front are wearing out who knows how many times it's run into stuff that it's no surprise the wheel bearings are warm but I got to get gas fast before it leaves me stranded it's almost on zero now realize one thing you want this thing to run right you're gonna have to run premium gas on it so you're going to pay more for it so today for 10 bucks you get a little over two gallons and that's not gonna go so far in this thing so now that there's some gas in it we'll start it up and I can actually drive without worried of running out of gasoline and even though I've shown you why BMWs can be endless money pits all the technology the insanity I'm going to show you why people buy them I'm not saying whether it's wise mover now I'm just going to show you why people buy them because literally when you're driving on the road these things go like stink no arguing that they handle quite well even this one's shaking a little bit because it needs tires and balancing and stuff these things are beasts on the road and as we approach this curve here you don't have to slow down you can speed up these things are insane they're so much fun to drive because really the BMW six cylinder engines were pretty quick to begin with when they started messing with these V8s hey they got some powerhouses in them oh if you want to ignore all the warning signs about BMWs and don't mind throwing caution to the wind and you can find one of these cheap there's plenty of low priced ones out there when the owners find out how much it costs to fix them and the money they threw in them you might have all [Music] haha beautiful looking car and as I said before when you look inside you can see this is German technology well actually Austrian technology it's a different country these things are made in Austria same place that they make the Mercedes G Wagon the Magnus stair Corporation now to make this little Roadster go it has some very interesting technology the most interesting is the speed mode that this thing has as you go inside there's a button here and it says sport when you push the button the dash says sport it is now in sport mode no I know a lot of people think oh buttons what do they do it's just some scam to make you think it's going faster well in this case the sport mode actually does quite a few things and the first thing you're going to notice with the sport mode is sound so first I turn it off now it's in non-sport mode you can hear the sound when I rev It Up [Music] and now we're going to turn the sport mode on you can see it's a sport [Music] certainly notice the difference what's doing it well I'll show you under the car as we go under the car you can see in a bag of the muffler here there's a little valve it opens and closes that valve now here in Texas there's no decibel limits you can't make outrageous noises there's a law that's just a general law some states have decibel limits check this thing with the decimal meter it's not particularly high but what it's doing is it's opening that valve up you're getting more flow and give it a little bit more power now when I was younger guys Muffler deletes they cheat they have a valve on the exhaust and they have a cable when they pull the cable like a joke cable it opened up so you had no Muffler and it was straight exhaust loud as can be which is illegal this isn't straight exhaust it's just modifying turn that switch off goes back to normal all right that's part of the sport package changes the exhaust a little but that's not all it does pushing the sport button effects under the hood too changes the computer settings you get get a sharper throttle response computers can do magical things you get more acceleration of course you're going to get worse gas mileage you don't have to run at sports mode all the time but when you do you get more power and it's going to need more gas of course and it also makes quicker shifts it affects the transmission to give you more acceleration and at the same time it also tightens up the suspension system which is also electronically controlled so it can handle the extra power and speed of course yeah it's going to ride a little bit rougher this is a two-seat Roadster it's going to tighten all that up you'll feel the bumps more but you'll have better handling it's an active differential electric control and multiplay clutches to control the power to each wheel that controls the lateral torque when you're cornering so you have better stability think of it as posi traction on steroids and GM came up with that ages ago the posi traction so they could get their muscle cars to really around without just spinning and not being control this is that on steroids with electric motors multi-plate clutches all controlled by computers to keep the lateral torque just where you want it in the case of the Supra that Sports button isn't just for show believe me I tried it out the thing handles flies it's really a joy to drive and yes it's extremely high-tech German technology we'll see how long it lasted in the long run it's a brand new car here it's sure it's fun to drive now speaking of German technology this is a straight six BMW engine it puts out 320 something horsepower so it's got a lot of power but the BMW version of this which is the Z4 puts out 380 something horsepower now why is that the case the BMW Z4 it has the same exact engine has the same transmission why does it have a lot of horsepower the BMW straight six engine which is the same engine two turbo charges on it it's a straight six engine but it has two turbochargers on so it puts out more horsepower they didn't offer it in 2020 only in the BMWs they do that now the BMW Z4 is a convertible this is a hard time convertibles always weigh more the way they build them and of course the BMW convertible is one of those metal convertible tops so it's heavy it's heavier than this one is so even though the BMW Z4 has more horsepower this weighs less and it's relatively close this is like two tenths of a second slower zero to sixty then the convertible is with all that extra horsepower so it's one of these things you'd have to decide do I want to lose two tenths of a second zero to sixty and have one turbocharger or do I want to go whole hog and gain that two tenths of a second zero to sixty by having the complexity of two turbochargers on the same engine all I have to say is I work on BMWs I burn a mechanic for 52 years I had to change the Dual turbos on a BMW they do have a tendency of wearing out faster you got two of them there's more strain and here I was like a twelve thousand dollar job they're not cheap to work on so maybe it's a smart idea they only have one turbocharger and not throwing two on it's not the fastest thing out there by any stretch of imagination the BMW which is a little faster than this goes zero to 60 in 3.8 seconds the 2020 Corvette goes zero to 60 in 2.8 seconds so you're not going to be beating them in a drag race no matter how big you put an engine in this this is a two-seat Roadster for having a lot of fun and now for safety reason or whatever these are electronically limited to go 155 miles an hour take the Corvette it isn't it'll go 194 miles an hour so if you're going to the racetrack you're not going to be able to keep up with one of those things this is really a lot of fun and really come on now in the real world you're not supposed to go over the speed limit which the top in Texas here is 80 miles an hour when you drive out to El Paso if you're racetracking it's a different ball game other Technologies they have you might be interested in well you're probably really interested in the tree transmission yes it is an automatic transmission it is a zf8 HP which stands for eight high performance they use these in a lot of vehicles they're fascinating Transmissions this isn't some exotic one-off job that they make a few of for example in 2017 the ZF company in Austria sold 3.1 million of these ZF 8-speed Transmissions that is a lot and it isn't one of those exotic dual clutch Transmissions where it's actually a manual transmission with two clutches but the computer pushes the clutches and shifts it this is a traditional automatic transmission it does have a torque converter and it's got eight speeds they seem to perfected these things I was totally impressed by how this thing went if you wanted to go in normal mode you couldn't even feel the thing shift gears because there's eight of them they're closer together when you put it in sport mode it took off like mad but even then the shifts were extreme really smooth it wasn't summer it was smooth they are well-built Transmissions they are extremely complex they cost a king's Ransom to repair when they finally do break down but they are not notorious for breaking down until they get a lot of miles on them we'll take it for a spin and I'll show you now here's normal non-sport mode you can feel its shift well you can't really look at that unbelievably smooth there we go it's in sport mode and away we go [Music] you can hear and feel the power and with the suspension tighten up man this thing handles like a dream it just goes and handles no problem controlling it whatever and yeah you're gonna feel the bumps it's a roadster realize I'm doing all this with one hand on the steering wheel total control No Hands it is one stable vehicle now you can tell it was driving at hard cause those coolant fans are a running you see the cars turned off yet the fans are still running if you have a car that isn't designed right and you beat it hard and turn it off the residual heat will cause problems with the engine this is going to run those fans until it gets an acceptable range then they turn themselves off this is really a technological Marvel there's no arguing it so if you never want to miss another one of my new car repair videos remember to ring that Bell [Music]
