everyone welcome back to pine hollow out of diagnostics behind me is my wife amanda and her 2010 nissan rogue so i was away out of town for a few days and i swear every time i leave something happens and this time the rogue left her stranded again what happened i was just returning from a bike ride and going up our local hill which is just over there at the base of it yep that mountain over there yeah and i don't even i don't even juice it up the mountain yeah take it easy because the cvt you want to make it last it's on its second one it's doing fine but he gave a big buck a big shutter and it ran through my head must tell ivan and as soon as that thought left my mind my dashboard lit up like a christmas tree oh no power down done and just enough time to coast to the side of the road eight and you're going up like a twenty percent grade i am in a curve stick curve right along the guardrail get off the road oh my gosh high speed road like 55. oh my word yeah it was a really bad place to let me down no warning no morning so i get a phone call amanda's distressed she's like oh my my car stalled i'm on the side of this mountain i'm like okay first things first are you safe if you have to climb out the passenger window over the guard rail you know it it is really a bad spot because it's in a curve cars are flooring it to get up the mountain so what did you do then you did you like just kind of back down a little bit did i did as soon as i tried to restart him he would instantly stall okay start instantly stop so he'd always crank and start but instant stall but i ended up putting him in reverse and he started drifting backwards which is kind of scary because i have no power steering yeah and the braking was really weird i'm not used to that because i always have my yes uh-huh and so i a little unnerving but i instantly put my parking brake on he was stopped so i felt okay i have this so i had to back up not very long a few car lengths and there's a dirt road that leads off into the woods and i could just back off the road into that opening so i was just off but i was completely off the road at that point wow wow so the car was now off the road which is good but it was still there and just so happens that my friend keith defazio from staten island north carolina and he's been traveling for his new job doing customer service and he was in the area i'm like perfect timing keith my wife is stranded her car died can you stop by and take a look at it and help her out he's like absolutely no problem he was there in 15 minutes and well what did he do did you get the car started i wasn't ever as happy to see someone probably as i was when he pulled up so he so sweetly brought a smile to my face because i was a little bit stressed oh yeah at this guy's actions and he brought out a scanner one of his many oh yeah whips open the hood sits down plugs in his dongle and within three minutes had the car started and a little farther down the dirt road because by that point i had already called triple a they're wonderful they're on their way out but it took them a while to get to me because i guess there's a lot of calls there so it's literally three minutes and keith had it started wow not enough that we felt secure that it could drive up over the mountain because it still had i don't know a thousand feet climb so we thought let's not push it breakdown again but it was enough to drive it turn it around so that it could be easily put on a flat okay so how did he get it started he ended up here we go what's this park what did he unplug did he show you he unplugged this guy this guy okay this guy what what is this i i only know that because he told me the mass air flow the mass airflow sensor otherwise i would not have known i don't know how he knew that but he did huh he unplugged that and then at first mr rook didn't set any codes before he touched it no code no codes no codes which i i find out yeah you would think yeah exactly so no codes but he unplugged that and got a code that of course that was unplugged and when he did he could actually start the car but it stayed running really rough really really rough sputtering [ __ ] threatening to stall not happy not happy but it stayed running and so he plugged it back in cleared the code and then mr roger went back to the instant start stall yes and start stalling okay meanwhile keith also checked the fuel pump okay and he actuated it and you could hear the sound oh it's cute hit the rear wheel he let me listen to it so that was working so i guess it wasn't fuel and that's how he needed to come up here so he unplugged it a second time got the code back on the scanner was able to reliably start it okay again rough but you started and that's when he was able to drive it flee away interesting okay so then we got towed here here we are and that's where we are yes where we are my first guess was hey did you run it low on gas because you know what's happened before it has happened before and when you're on a steep incline and you have two gallons left it you know basically the fuel pump can't pick it up and i'm like if that's the case i know it's not but it it's i've gotten better over the years i've learned a little bit so now yeah yeah i was like no no no ivan we have gas so there's gas in the tank mass airflow sensor is unplugged what and it runs you know poorly but it runs with this unplugged so it's not reading the mass airflow so let's uh check the basics first um is did anything get sucked into the mass airflow sensor well unlikely because there's an air filter preventing anything from contaminating it but let's check that first so you're gonna help me out oh okay lift this little lid there's two little tabs here so i'll un uncook it it's easy okay and i just just lift it up right now yeah take it off okay now take out the air cleaner oh that's sad oh my god what happened oh my gosh what happened what the heck oh that's gross oh my gosh that's disgusting look inside the box i don't think i want to oh oh my gosh oh my gosh yeah that's exactly what it is well i don't know if that's exactly what it is but that's there's a giant mouse nest in the air box and the giant sound oh that's sad it's like a mummified i don't think he could get out when your car is driving this is ridiculous that is ridiculous yeah they chewed a hole yeah you gotta make a mess somehow i guess oh my gosh so oh my gosh something got sucked into the pipe probably got wedged against the mass airflow sensor hopefully not too much got sucked into the engine we'll check but under load when you're going up the hill you had maximum airflow and then oh no they got um there's your problem lady that seems like it's been a lot how's that for diagnosis i'm surprised keith didn't find this well i i don't i'm sure he would have i think he just wanted to get the car started yeah so what we're going to do is take off the intake pipe and the air box housing and basically do a visual inspection make sure everything's clear check the sensor replace this oh it's nasty and this car should be back on the road unless something hard got sucked into the shoulders so so does this make you trust your car again a little bit because i have to tell you i was really upset because when cars let girls down especially not okay it's not okay and it gave me no warning there was no warning because i i wouldn't have ignored it i would have i would have let you know but there was no warning it was just game over oh my god so i thought oh no i thought it was my transmission again but it wasn't yeah i don't feel as bad because maybe it wasn't his fault yeah i'm like if you tell me that the transmission is blew up again i'm gonna shoot myself i'm not swapping this transmission again i mean he's got 240 000 miles so uh i'd say he's very reliable yeah just that this is just caused by unfortunate rodents oh my gosh getting in here and wreaking havoc i drive it every day though i know how do they have time to build a nest i don't know maybe i should bring my snakes in the barn yeah we have some big rat snakes that would love to snack on the little problem the barn where's the little rodent join me again i'm gonna put him over by the oh by the trash we should we should bury him yeah we should take a picture of him for keith keith will be uh interested to see this yeah all right let's get some tools out and clean this air system out maybe put a little net in here so the rodents can't get in i don't know what how to solve that [Applause] so here is oh no giant oh my gosh oh my gosh pieces of air cleaner oh gosh oh gosh oh logan little guy oh they're babies they're dehydrated babies that's so sad oh that's sad wouldn't your responsible mother to build her nest in the car i think they got dehydrated oh that's sad oh my gosh critters so anyways let's try to get this assembly out and i already have a brand new air cleaner in stock pure later looks nice that goes in the trash it did a big buck so here is the mass airflow sensor and it looks actually very clean surprisingly i thought there would be something stuck in here now that piece could have potentially fallen out you can see those resistors they are still in place then the airflow goes through that passage and out of this little hole so we can blow it through spray some magic fluid on it i don't see any any reason why this would prevent the car from running okay so didn't find any other debris and let's put in our new you can you can do the honors which which way does it go but it is nice and red yeah it's nice and in one piece this way upside down this way okay so yeah so the air is coming in through here okay this way yes don't force it now just jiggle it don't force it now you gotta jiggle it i think i put it in the wrong way no you're fine is it stuck yeah well this see the rubber has to be um flush against that and now well maybe maybe i told you the wrong way maybe this way oh oh oh try that way try that one try that okay okay so the rubber seal has to seal no no don't force it tilt it okay okay now the rubber has to touch here there you go it seems awfully loose i think i did it yeah but then the cap the cap up here it holds it down remember no so you gotta put put in this cap and which way does that go this way this way [Applause] well um this way yeah that way i don't know don't forget just jiggle it jiggle it as you push it down okay there you go there's one you got it how do you think it's gonna start it's not gonna start i think we gotta plug in a scanner and clear the code out and then try to start it all right so now this is a dongle for your scanner where do you plug that in underneath the dash okay let's go you might have to yeah do a visual you see the plug oh yeah i do okay there's only one way you can go you're a pro you got to be very good leave that hanging now you get in the driver's seat your dog wants to come with you now turn the key to the on position now you got your scanner over there um yeah you can put on your on the steering wheel so it's gonna be right here okay this is the think tool scanner yep now go to diagnosis and then choose asian and then find nissan very good gtr that's a that's a really sporty one do i hit okay yeah i hit okay it says end session no it's connecting okay now so you automatically search it'll find your car is that correct very good 2010 yeah confirmed and yes now do smart scan and it'll check all the modules so he has two codes in the engine oh no but we'll reset them don't worry oh no i break one code in the abs why probably because it's telling the abs to like cancel itself because engine wasn't running we'll see we'll see we'll do a full report it's pretty quick it's weird oh it didn't color in the hll it's still going it's checking your all-wheel drive that's green what else is there there's intelligent key you don't you don't have sonar you don't have intelligent key this card basically doesn't have much what did he say doesn't even happen i had to add oh what kind of car is this does anyone have even base model old cars have mirrors on their visors i had to add these that's that's ridiculous we also have to add a uh trunk light uh yeah add the harness okay now click click report click ok and click okay i'll click save and pre-repair very good i'll click open now and scroll down and see what codes you have oh no my math sensor yes because keith plugged it to make it run i don't know what i ate look engine signal one why what's that mean i'm not sure but let's go let's go back go back okay so the scanner back again you're good at this now clear dtc's yes look it's gonna go did he clear him uh it looks like it didn't oh wait it just needed a while wait clear gtc's yes i don't think it was why is it not clearing them it doesn't work go to the engine computer click on that one two so you got two codes right enter so now it's going right into the engine computer module engine control module it'll make it a little a little brighter it's very pretty bright okay now read fault code okay so it did delete them clearly that's good so now try to go read data stream uh all signals and now let's pick the ones that we want to look at which is mass air flow sensor so slowly okay click uh go up a little bit did you see it already click engine speed i wouldn't have chosen that one i'll keep going up slowly keep going you're looking for mass airflow yes that one that one right there oh no you can see it sucks too if you want less airflow sensor yeah no that sounds really low now click ok you don't want the other one the iat you can you can check it and take temperature sensor that's right there this is an intake now click okay that's that's all we need that's all we need yeah okay so right now your mass airflow voltage is 0.36 volts that's fine right because your engine is not running now start the engine let's see if it starts okay oh oh he's running it is he's doing his little little surgery search but he's been doing that for years right now yeah so is he happy look at your masterpiece a lot though you got 17 grams per second he's warming up right yeah so at idle when you're at high idle when his rpms are down you should see about two and a half to three grams per second that's pretty bad huh no he but no this is normal he's warming up right now he's using more hair he's not an idol he's not highly you gotta wait till he warms up fully but he's running yeah he's press the gas a little bit see if he rubs up oh you're back in business well yeah i guess yay no parts required we have to remove some stuff parts parts need to be eliminated that's interesting um maybe it's warm but he's not his rpms aren't fluctuating as much as they have really huh maybe that's well we'll we'll do a test drive and then tomorrow morning you'll start him up and see if his rpms are fluctuating but i think you're in good shape it looks really promising that would be great yeah everything looks good no no check engine light right no no no everything's clear excellent yeah all right mr rogers is did he regain your trust i felt bad i really blamed you you're really blamed you're hard on him it's like i'm ready to get rid of him and i just had my mind on yeah so so amanda to get to work she had to use my old mazda van over there and she's like oh at least this car starts and runs and gets me there and doesn't stand to grow at the bottom of the mountain that's so happy ending easy fix i'm sure keith will enjoy this video since i he he was the hero but um i think that's it thanks a lot for watching we'll see you next time all right all right bonus footage amanda said you have to look at the cute dog she's ready to go she loves car rides yeah she doesn't like diagnostics that much she just like she likes hanging out yeah okay yeah all right see you guys later
