yo what's up we are now outside my home and behind me here you see nissan leaf 24 kilowatt hour from 2012. this car is nine years old you know when i call tesla it's seven year old test i call it the veteran the classy what the hell is this then fossil but anyway so i'm going to do some battery degradation test and some range tests with it but um i've actually been spending yesterday and half of today see the sun is about to set now i've been spending a lot of time trying to calibrate and balance it but uh i didn't want to bother you guys with it but i figured maybe i should bother you guys with it after all because it's actually a long process but before we start let's just show you the car and start from the back you see since this is the original one it has a big ass beam here um i don't remember what is in there i think it was some electronics not the battery pack but with the later models it became slightly smaller and then also in the in the 2014 i mean so that 40 kilowatt hour and so on it they remove it so you have even more space so [Music] what wait man i'm trying to find the toe hook here i always have to pull that let me see what's this ah i'm trying to wow this is not very good ergonomics i'm trying to lift this one up man there's no torque here i'm supposed to pull that joke ah okay whatever let's close this one okay in the back looks like this okay i have some of my crap in there but yeah uh some kind of fabric see nice and soft and smooth yeah i like that yeah we have door pockets huh look at this huh look at this interior man remember guys this is from 2012. it's an electro outdoor from two what do we have in here do you have any stuff here what is this what is that oh it's cup holder okay okay no usb there all right but uh oh and on the front voila huh let me look look here there's even some kind of nice soft material here look look wait this is also huh think about this from 2013 i just noticed this one look at this man i i like this i mean you might be thinking oh man what a piece of car no listen listen this is from 2012. back in the days what what kind of evs do we have on the road we had triplets shitty triplets imei um this car has let me fire up the car i'm doing some pre-heating right now okay it's starting we have nice infotainment i mean we have nice instrument cluster we have speedo up there we have some buttons here um we have vests even well okay i mean the backup sound and here okay let me switch we have day and night mode we have a touchscreen and also we have cruise control the triplets don't even have cruise control we have cruise control we have steering wheel controls here buttons on the steering wheel and a touchscreen pretty pretty nice infotainment system even for today's standard look here it's okay okay you can't you can't scroll like that okay okay you have to i mean you have to remember you can zoom like this you have some map settings here uh where you can customize it you see okay let's go back okay um we have here the the what's it called again zero emission button here you can sub climate control time as i already set the camera it has built-in climate control settings you can also i think this one also has the app support huh a car from 2012 with app support okay the battery capacity might be shitty but uh we have if you go back here energy information you can even see how much the car is pulling for climate control for others for the motor or propulsion history yeah so so and look what this does cd player and map i think you yeah well sd card let me see there sd card uh reader from the map what could i put it back okay okay wait how do i this is all school stuff and then they put in some dub whatever at the addition here so we have one usb there this is audio jack yeah three 3.5 millimeter audio jack and this is nothing nothing no wireless charging here no no no some cup holders the same button you have in the modern leaves also and here we have a little pocket for storing stuff so think about this so much stuff we get from 2012 this car huh this nice steering wheel the interior overall is pretty nice uh i think you know i always praise the leaves from this age because in comparison to all the uh wait it has adjustable seat belts also handles here well let me let you know is this sunglass uh holder oh yeah nice uh what about this one okay no light okay does it extend no it doesn't extend but it's pretty large so think about this back then the competitors were really so far behind they were five years behind nissan really you remember that um the leaf it's an acronym it stands for leading environmentally friendly affordable wait uh yeah okay something something like that but leading leading and it was really leading back then big time compared to the the competitors but okay this video is about the battery capacity yes the battery status so unfortunately this car doesn't charge 200 percent uh the first day i charge it it stopped at 85 percent of the hand what the heck and then i went to drive it down to almost actually draw it to absolute zero but then i fast charge it because that's what i had to do i mean the time wise but i think that must have been mistake because today and then i noticed that it charged to about 90 this morning and then i repeated it again but i also did the mistake by far starting it i think that's the mistake every time i do it because now you see it's at 90 it doesn't want to go higher i mean i waited wait a long time but you want to see this maybe let me assume a little bit there so the number here you see still the health the car estimates 76 state of health and yeah and also it's slightly imbalanced now imba yeah in-game invites bad yes but um and also these numbers doesn't make sense okay the odometer is correct 100k but it says one quick charge and 12 l1 l basically um slow charging ac charging that doesn't make sense it should be way more than that uh let's see it could be because uh recently el bilmec they they replaced the onboard charger maybe they reset some stuff in the brain here yeah but you see that the car reports 15.7 kilowatt hour i was able to pull it down to 0.5 kilowatt hour but i didn't know even there to go until the car shut down so at least we should have 15 kilowatt hour but i feel like i haven't i haven't calibrated the battery yet so that's why i actually don't want to do a range of the regular range test before i'm sure that the the battery will go to 100 because 100 here should be yeah 100 this one though shows that it looks like we have 100 and also you see that according to this display it looks like we have lost two bars so the whole bar thing is just a guideline you really have to look into the bms and actually do dig deeper to to figure out how much the car has degraded in the battery department but this one is just um battery temperature but okay also very inaccurate scale but yeah this car's done hundred thousand kilometers in nine years that's not much at all so anyway um i think what we're going to do now is um we will take it for a spin but probably not drive on the lo or maybe we should just try for fun yeah let's do the 90 test and see how many kilometers does even though it doesn't i'm not going to measure it too accurately yet we have to try to calibrate or balance the battery i'm not sure if it needs calibration or balancing maybe a little bit of both yeah so um let's get ready and then off we go we are now on the highway and uh you see we're cruising at night it's not super strict when it comes to speed um man i'm i set the cruise control to 90 kilometers per hour uh okay it goes 91 i don't know why but even at 91 look at the real speed yeah [Music] now you understand why leaf people drive so slow so when they think they're driving let's just for fun okay let's tap down the speed to 80 kilometers per hour okay i'm going to show you here i'm going to cruise at another cruise at 80 kilometers per hour you know the akra turner the the exact drivers in norway yeah see speed now is 80 kilometers per hour how much are we how fast are we really driving 73 kilometers per hour yeah so we have to go faster to match the the 90 kilometers per hour speed we have passed clefta and we're heading towards yes hey now and uh yeah i think i will go for yeshim and then turn around so that should be okay based on the stats so far and i have 57 battery left so remember we start with 90 roughly so it's uh 6 20 right now and we still have a little bit of daylight huh wow see the days are getting longer now and the temperature rising so finally we can say goodbye to the winter hopefully wow that's a nice sunset wow oh man can't wait for summer to come we are on the way back now and look at that sky wow when the sky is red it means that blood has been shed i just noticed you look at the unit here energy economy it's just 0.2 kilowatt hour per kilometer so you see nissan back in the days they actually went their own way and they displayed it in uh per kilometer you know like it should be not per 100 kilometer but then later they started using what the rest of the industry did was which was to use the unit per 100 kilometer but my claim is that per 100 kilometer is not logical and incorrect just like roof boxes that has that is put the wrong way everyone accepts that that's the right way but uh are you really sure about that okay anyway so uh yeah we have now uh gone down to 33 we have five kilowatt hour left so hopefully we can get back to my home we have a low battery warning here and we have seven kilometers of range left and it's blinking so you know if you're driving a tesla or a kona or something with long range and you see that you have seven kilometers range level in your pants but this is the reality of the leaf owners nine years ago seven kilometers that's plenty still still have 20 left and 3.1 well at least 2.5 kilowatt hour left so yeah that should hopefully be enough to get me back home okay now we drive a little bit on the side roads here in there my home so you see the speed is a little bit low but at least what we've done 67 kilometers now at least uh 60 of those kilometers we're done at 90 kilometers per hour but this is not a true range test because yeah i'm mainly just trying to drive it low but uh on the other hand how many leaf owners does actually drive at 90 kilometers per hour so we're down to 1.9 kilowatt hour now so we're gonna try to run it even lower but just want to be careful uh there's still no power limit still no weird going on but i still have to be a little bit careful oh you see this would usually scare the out of me and many other people oh there's no range left there's no indicated range left but have no fear because we have leaf spy and leafs by tells me i have well at least 1.3 kilowatt hour left yeah one point at uh at zero percent you have uh 0.5 kilowatt hour left so it's still safe ish i think okay let's uh let's drive around the neighborhood a bit more oh there is no range left there is no displayed range left there also ah we are out whoop low terrain low terrain pull up pull up okay we are almost home now uh yeah hopefully we can get yeah we i think we're fine now here i've done this a couple of times before with this car [Music] we are in front of the house now in the safety here in the sanctuary and wear the charge plug right here so no problem but we still have 1.4 well at least 10 percent left so i need to spend i want to discharge it to 0 percent so we can try to balance this so one way to do this is to just crank up the heat when i do this manual i mean auto it seems like it doesn't go too crazy so actually go maximum speed here and then wait which mode was again something like this i guess yeah and now we can check here that the heater the pink here should go up to about four kilowatt it takes a little while and then it cranks up so this is the safest way to do it uh if you want to discharge a battery for this purpose but this is again this is not a normal behavior it's just to calibrate and balance the battery that i do it like this oh we are now at eight point eight percent you see it down there eight point eight percent stay the charge and suddenly now you see some red bars appearing on this screen here and it claims weak cell 21 22 24 i'm not sure what this means it is those cells kaput probably not it's just that they are a bit lower than the other ones i guess i mean some leaf experts could probably tell me more about what's going on right now but you see that now that when we go lower the cell gets more imbalanced 118 millivolt that was a lot more than when we had it almost fully charged so yeah we can switch to the other screen here let me see yeah see now we have 1.2 kilowatt hour so once we are at zero it should be 0.5 that's what it was yesterday when i tried and this yeah this method seems to pull about four kilowatts so shouldn't take too long to reach zero percent let's go back to this one this one would be interesting to see towards the end now we are now at three percent and we have 230 millivolts of imbalance wow it just keeps growing and growing looks like rocky mountains here and then to my big surprise the remaining kilowatt hour it's been has been staying at 0.5 kilowatt hour since 5 already so i guess once we hit on actually no no oh this is different okay we have turtle mode now turtle mode just occurred now suddenly yeah but normally i wouldn't go below five percent of the on the leaves by anyway so uh but i wonder how many times it has reached throttle mode in this lifetime okay so you see this is why i run the heater in front of my house because it's way safer to just do it like this than to be on the road and then you might miscalculate and then you get turtle mode you get trucks behind you and that's kind of scary could potentially be dangerous so this is the method to discharge the battery in front of the house as long as the car allows you to run the heater on all the way to zero though let's see how does the imba look like now ah okay yeah can we see oh i was about to say can we see 250 millivolt oh yeah can we see 300 whoa whoa whoa the car just shut down you see we suddenly have the battery here everything shut down here and the 12 volt is being discharged oh let's uh let's stop the fan we don't want to discharge the troll too much wow that's it the battery's dead ded okay before we plug in let's check okay okay this is the the cell imbalance right now 232 oh okay yeah okay let's plug it in okay we're now plugged in and you see that the battery icon has disappeared and if you look here on leave spy you will see on the corner here that the 12 volt is now being charged by the dc dc converter so 14.4 yeah that's the charting uh voltage and now we're receiving if it's uh if this bar is on then we are receiving power if there was that one that was we were spending so we are charging now at 1.4 kilowatt and then we're gonna look at this one so hopefully i don't know how long this takes uh i guess i'll check tomorrow morning then it should be way balanced in this but uh yeah the the mistake i did in the previous two other runs was that i fast charged it but i kind of wanted to know how fast it was charging and i can tell you that at low state of charge the the battery was taking uh 47 kilowatts but then it also throttled very fast so the the charging speed on this car this old car was actually pretty but i'll come back to that and document that in another video anyway i think that's going to be it so stay tuned for part two where i try to see if we can get it to 100 and how much will the battery be balanced in the morning so that's it for now i hope you guys enjoyed this video as always thank you for watching and talk to you later
