today I want to talk about one of the most important Sports coups of the 9s a car responsible for an entire wave of sideway swingers treasured by degenerate Drifters and revered by late stage Millennials I'm talking about the Nissan s13 it's one of the most important cars Nissan ever made dare I say the most important I'm sorry GTR your time's up big time to tell the story of Nissan's cheap lightweight two-door rear wheeel drive beloved sports car I need to find an untouched gem I want to experience what it was like in the '90s to drive off a Nissan lot in Japan and a car marketed and sold mainly to women if I could play some shenai Twain right now boy oh boy would I let's go girls tracking down the slammed s13 with a handbrake and an angle kit it's probably pretty easy I don't want that I want a unicorn I want a grocery getting Grandma spec that hasn't been touched by some greasy tuner and here's the thing I think I found the perfect car a bone stock 7,400 mile straight from Japan 1990 Nissan Silvia [Music] the dead giveaway that we have a Japanese spec s13 is in the name which you can see right here Sylvia Nissan decided to make some things confusing when naming the s13 they called it the 240 SX here in the states in both hatchback and Coupe configurations they called it the 200 SX in Europe and in Japan they called it the 180 SX for the hatch and the Sylvia in the coupe from 1988 to 1998 10 years the s13 was sold in Japan there's a chance that you could walk into a Nissan dealership in the Far East in the 9s and pick out an s13 an S14 an S15 a 300 ZX twin turbo an r33 GTR and an R34 GTR all in the same dealership those are everyone's most favorite Nissans ever in a single building so why on Earth if you walk up inside there pick this thing and why the heck did Nissan sell it for so long if you're expecting a weird transition right here we're not going to do it so probably the most obvious reason would be cost the s13 was priced anywhere between $ 13,000 to $18,000 depending on the options a base 300 ZX in 1990 was $27,000 so you get a pretty cool sports car without having to pay twice as much money speaking of options the Silvia had a pretty unique way to identify their trim levels playing cards the base model being the Jack got rollup Windows no AC 14-in steel wheels pretty Bare Bones next is the queen which we have here now this is the middle of the road option you got power mirrors power windows AC you could also get an optional LSD which this car doesn't have but you could pay a little bit more and get that sweet sweet list and then there's the Kings all the upgrades of the Queens plus a little thing called the turbo under the hood they also made a ace on top of the C and q's models they had club and Diamond selection packages see Nissan marketed the s13 to women with options that seem as if it were an automobile fashion accessory in fact 75% of the sales were claimed to be purchased by better educated women I don't know what that means but they used it in their marketing okay so I understand why someone would want to buy this car over some other Nissan options but why did Nissan keep it around so long well kind of an easy answer cuz people were buying it they sold over 300,000 s13s in Japan during its run now regardless of what option out car you got the real treat of this car was the used market price letting 300,000 s13s age for a little bit help cement this car as one of the best Once Upon a Time you can get this thing for like 1,500 bucks you get really nice ones for like 3,000 bucks you get really really nice ones for like 4,000 bucks and because of that it spawned a bunch of interest in guys and gals who like skiding around corners a rear wheeel drive manual sports car that's balanced easy to work on and most importantly cheap unfortunately you can no longer get them for that cheap you'd be better off buying a used F FRS or GT t86 but what if you just so happen to have $14,000 burning a hole in your pocket could you get a low mile No Frills Japanese milk driven s13 Sylvia from Japan in two-tone seaf foam green but something's not adding up for me okay I'm in the garage of a car guy clearly someone who on the surface is obsessed with Center loock Wheels rare JDM parts and has an unhealthy addiction to online auction purchases so if you're a person who has that type of money why on Earth would you buy this car what kind of chronically online Maniac who's addicted to JDM Parts who also doesn't speak a lick of JDM would do such a thing well as it turns out that person just so happens to be my best friend hey Jimmy hey Jerry you want to go for a ride [Applause] please don't do that while driving how's it feel being a host huh feels like the whole world crumbling around me so Jimmy what do we have here what am I got my American butt in all right well this is a 1990 Nissan Sylvia CU it's a seafoam green car it's a 5-speed naturally aspirated ca18de so so uh nothing too crazy to write home about okay so they put a couple different engines in this car and the Japanese spec specifically we got the SR20 SR20 we got the SR20 turbo yep we have the this version which ca18de and then the ca18de T the turbo so you have the bottom bottom of I got the bottom yeah and then the US they had the ka24 E and the K24 d right there's a there's a ton of engine options and this isn't your first S3 is it this is my first s13 but I've had a few s14s with the ka4 that's the truck motor from the Nissan correct truck right so that's kind of a bummer but this is a cool spec motor you have 16 valve right dual overhead cam mhm a lot of guys I talk to they kind of say that this is a mini uh RB engine okay so the SR is kind of its own platform whereas this is kind of a RB platform rbes yeah the top trim level obviously came with the SR20 turbo made 205 horsepower yeah fast car this car is relatively light 262700 lb now this version obviously doesn't have it cuz you're you're working with maybe 130 horsepower but you're not a guy who likes to go fast no I'm not a race car driver like yourself yeah I'm a big cruising guy I like cruising around town I like going and getting a good coffee I like going up PCH I like putting my girlfriend in the passenger seat going and getting nice Chinese food you know it's funny you should say that because in my research I realized this was considered a date car do you know that no I didn't know that yeah a date car meaning you know it's a car that you uh go on a date on and that does make sense a lot because this car was marketed to women so they marketed this as like a secretary car right just like the Mustang just like the Mustang just like the Miata mhm as someone who's owned a Mustang y a Miata in this car which is your favorite I mean it's tough to say I I really like these a lot because they're just so unique looking and you don't see them a lot so why don't you see a lot of sasses Mostly because they got drifted into walls over the past 30 years yeah so people uh would buy these cars cuz they're pretty well balanced they actually have a 5545 front to rear bias M so you get a little bit more weight on the front the rear end can kick out a little bit easier perfect for what's it called uh drifting you know they're not overly powerful if you do put a SR20 in it you can get it ripping pretty good you can do 2J swaps you put an LS LS you can do RBS it's got a big engine bay you can slam stuff in there yeah the engine bay in this thing is massive even it's like crazy how big it is and the ca18 is just such a small engine but they're fun light flickable cars at and at one point they were super cheap M I've heard stories of people picking them up for $500 I've heard people going up to guys who were living out of them and giving them $200 I've heard crazy stories but now the market for these is [Music] insane you know what I don't think not a lot of people know about your personal life Jimmy no I don't think so either they just see you as this side guy side guy yeah they don't know what I'm doing yeah people don't know you they they see you around but they don't know the real Jimmy but you know what I have a special treat is that your laptop well this is a laptop with a light detection unit connected to it see all these wires where'd you get that don't worry about it teu strap this around your stomach we're at a green light dude I got to boot the software up can you hold the steering wheel yeah sure I got to ship clutch in there we go oh god dude okay I'm strapped there there we go put this on your uh right index finger okay all right right there there we go put these on your left why there so many attachments dude I need I need to shift go for it now let me just that's not on there yeah oh my is this your first time doing this we're connected here just got to do a little uh Baseline reading here you got to in tune to my Wi-Fi signal okay Jimmy so you're going to have to answer each question truthfully and it's a yes or no question all right okay have you ever lied to avoid getting in trouble yes okay have you ever lied to a person of authority and I'll I'll say that I'm a person of authority oh yeah so far so good what what have you lied to me about I'm trying to think it was probably about some stupid thing oh yeah because you are a producer on another little known Channel you're a producer that then turned to a host yeah Battlefield promotion yeah well not really I think you wanted to be a host before Joby and I left I think you're taking your Li right now I am that's kind of part of it though I I took some licks you took a few I took a lot of licks this thing is like pulsing is that normal yeah it's normal have you ever cheated in school oh yeah 100% where did you go to school I went to Palisades Charter High School uh over here on the West side of La were you born here no I was not born here where were you born I was born in Australia how long did you stay there I was there till I was 12 years old okay and then I moved here lost my accent because I was bullied a lot at my uh Middle School oh really yeah they didn't like my accent I got a question yeah did you fall in love with cars in Australia or when you moved over here I I liked them I went where I'm from in Australia that we have the Gold Coast 600 which is like a street circuit that they set up was the V8 super cars but I remember a few years they had some like Indie type car so I'd go to that and I it was like a highlight of the Year for me to see that race uh that was where I saw my like first R32 and I was like o that's a that's a cool car that's a cool car car you've owned yeah yeah got rid of that and then got this yeah which some people would say would be a step down no but I I think it's a step up I do too just on a different stairway yeah okay uh we have a baseline now uh Jimmy one of the things I'm going to have to do is ask you some personal questions and don't lie to me I'm not going to lie not only will this know but I will know I know and then you'll hurt my heart yeah uh are you 21 years old no I'm not 21 years old old are you Jimmy I'm 27 okay cuz you look 21 I know I look very young yeah people have always uh assumed you you're young but you've been at donut since you were how old 20 20 yeah you were there before me I was there before you and before Joy I remember you guys' first dates yeah you started there as an intern right you were at College wanted an internship I did and uh hit up who who' you hit up I hit up the producer at the time Amelia I believe her name was uh uh and then the next week she got let go and then uh I just stuck around and then I got brought on as a production assistant full-time I did that for a long time recently I was given a producer title so I started producing shows you know I I helped produced the Australia trip yep and then you transitioned recently into a host gig yes which you're doing very good at thank you I appreciate that you know you and Joby have been nothing but Inspirations for me uh okay so you weren't lying about that that's good yeah I wasn't I was being very truthful when I said that I look up to you guys a lot right do you suffer from reverse Benjamin Button syndrome uh no I don't okay that's a trick question so obviously you lied on that you do suffer from reverse Benjamin Button syndrome that's just regular life that's why I'm always depressed uh next question Jimmy would you consider yourself a car guy yes I would I would say that you probably are the biggest car guy at donut it's probably a problem that I'm that much of a car guy yeah you're obsessed with cars yeah it's on my living room there's hoods everywhere yes there's I have wheels seats I have way too many steering wheels you're not lying about that no I'm not do you like Teslas no I actually get car sticking Teslas we're not seeing anything uh Spike oh next question have you ever put a sticker of a Japanese anime girl on a car yes I have so when I first really got into cars I was really into anime at the time and I would go to anime car clubs that had Meats regularly and they did this thing called Tasha style which is where you put an anime girl on the side of the car I uh I had a Mustang and I had anime on the side of it and I had it done up in a race Livery I had like a big awesome big APR Wing I had a really cool racing Splitter on it really cool Wheels like the car looked awesome that's like where I really feel like I got my start at you know doing that and I met a lot of great people uh I learned a ton learned a ton of what about just about car culture you know um and like a lot of the guys in that scene they had s chassis as well that's where I met I don't some of the best friends I've ever had who have taught me so much about cars and then that led me to go Donut oh you know so I so it worked out yeah okay and the last and final question jimy and I think it will really kind of put a cherry on top of you as a person who you like who you look up to am I your favorite car YouTuber host uh yeah yeah yeah you are you and job are collectively my favorite not just you both of you okay both of you well there was a little Spike there for a second and because I thought about job oh you thought about Joby too okay that's fair you can take that off also yeah this thing's like shocking me there's no way it's shocking it's shocking me dude so Jimmy as I mentioned before of all the car options a JDM Fanboy why this one cuz there's nothing like crazy about it exactly and I mean I've had I had an R32 GTR and that was you know a lot of people would say that's the echelon of owning a Nissan that's the one you know but like every car guy of my generation we grew up watching Initial D uhhuh there's a character in the initial D anime called katani and Otani he drives this exact car somewhat his is a K with the turbo this is a c I was always looking to find this car with this paint code like the paint code to me is why I really wanted it the aftermarket for these cars is extensive there is no shortage of Parts there are at least five optional cataloges for this car from Nissan yeah of just different things you could get you can get doilies for these seats you can get a crazy cool Factory Arrow kit there's even the Nismo Racing catalog where you can have a whole N2 SR20 engine built for this car crazy you can go on Yahoo auctions type in s13 and you'll find stuff for days you know there's so much R&D that's gone into these chassis that owning one is is a pretty simple task I would say whereas like an R32 GTR that that's kind of a challenge that is a that's a serious car you're buying it's a Sport coupe not a sports car exactly uh so you've only driven this car 500 miles you know I had you drive me to the base of a kind of a fun driving road yeah the last time I remember giving you the wheel here I remember you almost sending it off a cliff that's not true well regardless I think you're going to um let me drive this thing right yeah sadly I think I have to let you drive it yeah just uh remember the tires are still the ones that it came in on really yes are you for real yes so they well how old are they yes oh yeah Jimmy yeah so it's got a nice e bra it's got a good weight balance it doesn't weigh very much 2700 lb you start taking seats out and stuff you know you're down to 2500 lb in no time F you got a race car like that right now this car obviously wasn't made for drifting it was made to be a sports car it was an economy car right but it also is actually pretty good on a racetrack I would assume it's got some cool Tech in it first thing you got mcferson struts up front and you got a multi-link rear suspension in the back so the multi-link rear suspension was one of the first times Nissan used that in their cars now what that does is compared to like a live rear axle you have less unsprung Mass because the parts of a live axle wave more than a multi-link rear suspension and it's easier for you to swap out components you know you can put in an upper control arm a lower control arm it's not like a double Wishbone setup this multi-link system is what's called called orthogonal meaning that when you change one parameter it doesn't have an effect on the other parameters that's your new word of the day orthogonal all right here we go Jimmy you ready to open this thing up sure what is this thing rev to 6800 RPM around that I don't think I've even taken it up there yet well we're in third gear going about 100 km an hour dude oh oh yeah squealing oh the wheels are squealing a little bit here we go let's see how the brakes deal will this lock it up got to turn that yeah I don't know I don't oh yeah we're okay oh yeah we're good Jimmy I could have a lot of fun in this car I bet you could I feel like this car is a 16 yeah it's all about feeling the edge of grip you know driving a slow car fast oh yeah get in there oh bir yeah baby keep it going wow yeah never heard it at that RPM before did you get this thing mechanically inspected no Noe I wish I could do a heel toe but my knee hits the steering wheel you're too big for this car it wasn't developed for you I can see the potential it has I get it now I get why someone would take something like this cut the Springs cut the Springs weld the diff throw it up motor with a little bit more ump and just send it to Party Town who we're going to have a friend all right Jimmy yeah she's uh she's got potential yes it's a real fun car to drive if I were a kid back in the day and I got to learn how to drive a car like a sports car this would be a great platform to learn how to do it and that's how a lot of kids like car people in the industry got into car it was this yeah this was it this started people's careers hey so I'm a little hungry mhm and you know I think one of the things is I've got to drive your car but you know a lot of people want to know what it's like to eat in a car that's owned by Jimmy I don't I don't know if a lot of people want to know like that maybe you like Italian love Italian I got a spot okay let's get out here [Music] yeah I keep forgetting to put my SE a turn oh God the pasta chair yeah here we go stop stop stop stop oh Jesus jar jar I hate that turn so much oh God Jerry Jerry Jerry what [Music] the tires could probably uh yeah also they're leaking air there's a nail in the [Music] tire oh man well it looks like our pasta is intact shall we uh well they don't have Forks really yeah there's no Forks there's no Forks Canon well you with your hands so you know what Jimmy cheers that was a lot of fun cheers to please do not get it on the CL one bit of this tomato sauce on the gloss seats this is going to instantly devalue the car oh my God I how you eat chicken parm well Jimbo thank you so much for allowing me to learn a little bit about your car and learn a little bit about you yeah if you guys like this video and like seeing videos like this comment like subscribe do all that fun stuff share with your friends we're trying to build something here at Big Time so anything you guys can do to support we greatly appreciate it we love you guys so much Jerry's a man uh Jimmy's a man oh bye guys bye bye
