[Music] hi i'm matt irvin and i'm here to talk to you about the new lens 24 120 f4s let's do it [Music] [Music] oh [Music] i purchased it from digidirect so thank you very much did you direct for looking after me and letting me know that this was available it's quite a surprise so let's very quickly take a look then i'm going to head out onto the streets squeeze off a few shots and that'll be that for this video this is a first look and unboxing [Music] and warranty card absolutely fantastic we would expect nothing less we're not going to worry about this can't be used as a cleaning cloth i've been told i forgot to get a filter there we go awesome hood action beautiful and here is the lens itself okay well there it is it feels nicely weighted towards the back it's got the same build quality as all of the other s lenses oh gosh that is nice and firm wow that is really firm action that feels fabulous good work some might think of that as being a bit too stiff but i actually think with a lens like this you don't want it to accidentally come out so that is the way that i would prefer to go now of course this is a 24 to 120 so on your zfc or on your z50 when it's in cropped or on your z7 cropped or even your z6 crop this is a 36 to a whopping 180 so this makes it a super versatile travel lens that's what we love about this lens you have a mix of compactness and full-frameness as well as a reasonably large aperture f4 i mean we all we all want more but you know you've got to make the lens much bigger if you want to go to 2.8 or something so this is fabulous it's a lens a lot of people have been asking for and again let's say you're traveling with a z7 and you do have you do have out to 180 if you crop if you crop to aps-c slash dx mode and well gosh and when you're in dx mode on your z7 you're still at almost 20 megapixels so that is fabulous uh we have one function button here on the side we do have the control wheel which can be made aperture and iso and other things and of course we have our zoom and focus there it is so that's what this lens is as well as being able to go to manual and autofocus here on the side not much more to it than that it's got a good heft to it i like the weight and as i said it's balanced towards the back so that's fabulous how does it feel yep the weight certainly does head out as you as you head in that direction but that's totally cool all right so this is an s class lens and what we've seen from s-class lenses is there hello how are you i am great thank you very much yeah that's right this is when we're a gallery thank you very much yeah we're just recording would you like to be in my video [Music] how great was maria she she definitely is a better version of me than me there is no question it's the way it goes isn't it so as i said this is an s-class lens we have high expectations of a lens like this the 24-70 f4 which was one of the very first lenses to come out was also an extraordinarily great and sharp lens this is something i can't wait to show you more of let's go take a few pics and we will do a full review in the coming months [Music] it's very nicely stabilized wow that is ridiculous that is so rubber banded very impressive let's go all the way up to 120. yeah that's a nice amount of range isn't it now we're on the z62 again look at how well that's rubber banding that's crazy okay let's do some stills well what we can see here with short depth of field is that this is at f4 so we're at 1 320th iso 100 on the z62 at f4 and i'm about 4 meters or 12 feet from this door and we're still getting a nice soft background there this is such a great range focal length 24 to 120 it's very wide the video crop crops the tops and bottom more and i'll show you in the still that it's a wider frame but you've just got such great flexibility to go all the way wide like this quite a close-up that's full 24 to 120 right there very impressive and as i've said this is very stabilized [Music] all right i've been using this lens for a little while now and i can already tell it is extraordinarily well built it is optically fantastic distortion seems to be at a minimum now this is a very first or early look but you just kind of can feel these things when you do this every day i'm just very impressed and it's working so well with the z6 ii i'm sure it works well with the z6 i haven't tried but i'm so impressed by the level of stabilization detail and so on like if you look on the edge of frame there let's put it up against that doorway so look on the right and you can see how straight that is now we don't know whether that's happening digitally be interesting if it was happening digitally on the fly with 4k video i'd be impressed if you could do that [Music] well have a look at that we're shooting straight into the very bright sun we're only at 1 1600 that f4 that just looks glorious and smooth and i don't see any chromatic aberration there [Music] clear 1 8 000 f4 iso 100 on the z62 on the 24 to 120 looking at chromatic aberration this is 4k staring directly into the sun now if we freeze frame which we have and then go to 200 percent i see no sign of purple fringing at all let me know if you see it the brand new 24 to 124 s as we can see here let's go through them together i have not looked at these images yet there it is at 100 sorry there it is at 100 i want to change the color temperature a little bit i want to call it down a little bit and is that a fly i think that right there is a bug flying in the air there's another bug right there flying in there there's another bug right there that's pretty cool i didn't even see them my shutter is only 1 200 so no wonder they're blurry but there we are at pixel 4 pixel relative to my screen and that is looking lovely and sharp and then we can see the background is lovely and soft we're at 1 200th of a second iso 100 f4 at 94. so we're not at full stretch we could have even more of a sense of background blur if i'd been at 120 mil i'd probably make this slightly lighter and maybe throw a tiny bit of color into it but it really doesn't need it let's give that one five stars and this was the one that was in the video and you can see here we have a bit more of the footpath or sidewalk or whatever you call it in your part of the world now i always expose more for the highlights because i know that the z system is so flexible and it will easily and happily give me these shadow areas at a later date and there is that image 1 500th of a second f4 and if we go into 100 look at how lovely all of that is rendering that's absolutely gorgeous so all i've done is bring up the shadows the color is good the sharpness is great even over here on the edges and one of the reasons i photograph this sort of graphic stuff is well you can see you can see whether it is here on the edges sharp or not we're down here in the corner and these guys look great we are at 100 so of course if we go into 200 they're not going to look so great but they still look pretty great it's just a bit hard to tell when i do the full test i will do it on the z7 so we've got even more resolution to play with but that to me looks great now i doubt i doubt there's a profile for this lens yet but there might be so i don't know if it's being corrected that's a very colorful image isn't it let's have a look at one of those these are probably much the same that one's probably got a better horizon on it and again this is straight out of camera i haven't touched it just what capture one and this is version 22 so the absolute latest version just come out and somewhere in here really i don't feel like i have to do hardly anything else to this i mean do you need to add more color there's so much color there um no not really i don't think it needs it i might change the color temperature just because the sun was bouncing off a wall and sometimes you'll get a little bit of the color of the wall as opposed to just straight daylight i think i like it a little bit better with the whites being a bit whiter but that is spectacular for resolution again if we look over here in the corner we're at 100 and how all like this stuff just looks insanely sharp that's absolutely popping and as you can see i've done nothing to the file and this looks absolutely gorgeous and built all of these graphics everything looks superb and if we look up here in this corner like i said i don't know if this file's been corrected or not please let me know if you know how or if from a vignetting perspective i don't really see much of a sign of it here nor here in this corner so the darkness here and here is probably actually environmental as in the environment we're in and if we want to give it a bit more of a sense of that we can in this case i actually don't want to we'll keep moving like i said we're doing this together i have never looked at these images before in my life this is the very first time but in the case of this one i actually quite like it somewhere in the middle there but again once it renders which capture one takes a little bit because i've got an old imac these days but the color and everything that is just looking sharp and off the charts from my perspective here's a bit more of a close-up of the wall and gosh look at all that look how glorious that is all rendering again i get these graphics so you can just see like this is these are hard edges and they are sharp up here in the corner look at that graffiti that's crazy no that's crazy that's straight up crazy i'm doing nothing to it except brightening it slightly a stop wow so that's the bottom left corner amazing top top left corner sharp sharp sharp sharp sharp top right corner look at all that detail even something this small very impressive very impressive i mean and look i mean you'd expect it in the center but that that is just outstanding at a hundred percent i mean i do feel like i can reach out and touch that that has such a sense of dimensionality this one was taken to show background how the background can be out of focus let's bring that up one and a half stops or some such and you can just see this was about a foot 30 centimeters from the camera beautiful and sharp and even f4 you can get this lovely fall off you've just got to work out how you want to shoot so that looks great extraordinary extraordinary level of detail coming out on my 5k monitor and then being transposed to 4 k for youtube and compressed so what i'm seeing here this this is just absolutely glorious level of detail i mean i love that rendition look at that the building site and the dynamic range i mean i haven't touched this and we are shooting in full shadow and full daylight and we've got them both there that's pretty impressive in itself my neon sign out the front of my gallery studio looks beautiful five stars and then they're all going to be slightly different but so this is looking into the direct sunlight you can see here the lens is wide open at f4 iso 100 1 1600 at a full 120 mil and we're going to go into 100 and obviously we've got all of these edges they're getting hit these are all being hit by the sun this is the sun and i really don't see much sign of chromatic aberration if you can see it let me know but i can't see it we will do more testing but first look this lens is sharp it's uh i love the way the sun's looking this kind of soft look and it's sharp it's light it's got a long range goes out to 180 if you're happy to shoot in aps-c it's small it's slightly smaller than the 24-72.8 i'm i'm excited this is a very good very affordable great all-rounder lens more to come on this lens well as we would expect the images are looking great and what an awesome all-rounder lens the sort of super high quality lens that's going to cover almost all occasions please let me know in the comments below is there anything you'd like me to do with this lens how to
