nuclear programs and secret plans for retaliation in case of a foreign attack the special counsel speaking out for the first time his message and Mr Trump fighting back this evening will tell you what's next as he ordered the court what the former president's Rivals are saying many defending him tonight and we're talking to voters for their reaction as the 2024 primaries approach 64 million at risk as smoke from Canada's massive wildfires blows South put dangerous air like this become The New Normal you're in vandersloot in court face to face with a family of Natalie Holloway nearly two decades after her disappearance the major move it could make charging an electric car a lot easier what you need to know and my interview with the extraordinary Army vet now on a new mission to help heal others that's inspiring America this is NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt good evening and welcome after a parade of witnesses and two grand juries the government tonight is showing its hand in its classified document case against former president Donald Trump unsealing a 37-count indictment alleging that after leaving the White House Mr Trump illegally possessed classified government materials at his Mar-A-Lago home the special counsel including photos of boxes stored in the open some allegedly holding descriptions of four nuclear capabilities in U.S defenses the indictment also accusing the ex-president of showing National Defense secrets to visitors at his New Jersey Golf Club including military attack plans the indictment also detailing alleged efforts by Mr Trump to mislead the government and his own lawyers about the whereabouts of the material tonight's special counsel Jack Smith who brought the case breaking his silence asking Americans to read the 49-page indictment in full Laura Jarrett leads a off our coverage tonight new details on the stunning move by the special counsel the First Federal indictment of a former president who's also the leading Republican Challenger to President Biden special counsel Jack Smith alleging Mr Trump mishandled classified documents after leaving office and obstructed efforts to retrieve them from his estate in Florida we have one set of laws in this country and they apply to everyone Smith laying out 37 criminal counts against the former president including charges under the Espionage Act accusing him of improperly retaining National Defense information the indictment says among the classified documents kept in boxes information about U.S nuclear programs potential vulnerabilities of the U.S and allies and secret plans for retaliation in case of foreign attack are laws that protect National Defense information are critical to the Safety and Security of the United States and they must be enforced violations of those laws put our country at risk the boxes were stored in various places around Mr Trump's Mar-A-Lago home including a ballroom a bathroom and shower and office space his bedroom and a storage room prosecutors attach photos to the indictment showing boxes stacked along the walls and storage rooms another showing several documents spilling out of a box Mr Trump responding late today writing the Box contained newspapers and personal pictures the indictment also alleges Mr Trump showed classified information to people without security clearances on two occasions including at his Golf Club in New Jersey in July of 2021 where during an audio recorded meeting with a writer publisher and two members of his staff he showed them quote a plan of attack that Mr Trump said was prepared for him by the Department of Defense and a senior military official saying quote as president I could have Declassified it and now I can't you know but this is still a secret those Commons seemingly a direct contradiction to the former president's previous defense I took what I took and it gets Declassified that using his power as commander-in-chief he had already Declassified the documents he took to Mar-A-Lago if you're the president of the United States you can declassify just by saying it's Declassified even by thinking about it overnight Mr Trump blasting the indictment as another partisan attack this has been going on for seven years there's never been anything like what's happened I'm an innocent man I'm an innocent person it's called election interference they're trying to destroy a reputation so they can win an election this all began with a request from the National Archives to return any classified documents held at Mar-A-Lago the FBI ended up searching the property and tonight the indictment alleges Mr Trump obstructed investigators efforts including suggesting his own attorney falsely represent to the FBI and grand jury that he did not have any subpoenaed documents making a plucking motion for his lawyer to remove classified materials from the batch that would be turned over to the government and even directing his body man Navy vet Walt Nara who's also charged to conceal them from his legal team and the FBI even suggesting destroying some of them so Laura up next we've got the arraignment describe what happens that's right so Mr Trump is expected to show up in person to enter a formal plea as I'm to oversee this case is Aileen Cannon a trump appointee she's very familiar with the facts as she issued a number of controversial rulings regarding the FBI's search of his home that were later overturned and nothing prevents him from continuing to campaign yes legally nothing prevents him from running for office and even if convicted he can still get elected as president however the crimes he's been accused of carry anywhere from five to twenty years in prison though sentencing would be up to the judge sorry Laura Jared thank you now to the reaction to the special counsel's announcement many of Mr Trump's Republican allies even his campaign Rivals rushing to his defense President Biden was also pressed about today's news Garrett hake now has late details tonight an historic shake-up in the race for the White House the Republican front-runner former president Trump facing Federal criminal charges and now Mr Trump getting back up from some of his Republican Rivals his top opponent Florida Governor Ron DeSantis writing quote the weaponization of federal law enforcement represents a mortal threat to a free society and his former vice president Mike Pence urging public patience but blasting the Department of Justice calling it a sad day in America the day after a former president of the United States faces an unprecedented indictment by a justice department run by the current president of the United States and a political rival and this from GOP candidate Tim Scott what we've seen over the last several years is the weaponization of the Department of Justice against the former president and house Speaker Kevin McCarthy it goes to the core of equal justice for all which is not being seen today and we are not going to stand for it few in the GOP criticizing Mr Trump though Fierce Trump critic Chris Christie writing no one is above the law Mr Trump who was seen on the golf course today has politically survived multiple criminal investigations and being impeached and acquitted twice and has been bracing for this moment which would almost certainly derail most presidential campaigns but now fundraising off the indictment after seeing donations surge following his indictment in a Manhattan Court two months ago even selling T-shirts printed with the indictment date a pro-trump political group releasing this new AD stand with President Trump many Republicans slamming what they call a two-tier justice system pointing to the ongoing Federal criminal investigation of President Biden's son Hunter and the special counsel investigation of Mr Biden's own handling of classified documents with some found in his Delaware home and garage though Biden attorneys have cooperated with investigators tonight the president was asked about the indictment of his top GOP Challenger there's also a shake up on Mr Trump's legal team what can you tell us about that that's right Lester the former president's two lead defense attorneys both abruptly resigning today offering little detail as to why Mr Trump says he'll have new representation in place by Tuesday's hearing Lester all right Garrett thank you joining me now is senior Washington correspondent Hallie Jackson Howie we just heard what some candidates are saying publicly but what's the sense of what's Happening behind the scenes with the campaigns taking on Trump well at the moment Lester it seems to be a real Spectrum here with some sources from rival campaigns telling me that yes this is serious this is potentially disruptive but they're pointing out there is still a long way to go in this campaign yet there are other Republicans skeptical that this could actually change the landscape at all and then there's the language from a couple of conservative hardliners in Congress which is Raising concerns about potential incitement of violence after suggestions like this is a War Phase or using phrases like eye for an eye one member before the indictment details came out referencing military Maps Lester big picture keep in mind that Mr Trump all along has kept a grip on the Republican base after his last indictment he saw virtually no erosion in support from that group we're gonna have to wait and see when voters start actually casting ballots how that plays in the primary Leicester all right Hallie thank you but do Donald Trump's legal troubles really make any difference to Republican voters Jesse curse spent the day in Iowa to try to find out in the contest for the Republican nomination Iowa voters speak first what does that mean I think it's a huge responsibility I think we need to make a positive statement to the country and to the world some Republican caucus goers like Fred crakis are still undecided but he knows for him former president Donald Trump's latest legal woes won't make a difference Donald Trump was who he is before the indictment and he'll be the same after that indictment doesn't have any effect on my opinion about him positive or negative I'm not going to vote for him crakis voted for Trump in the last election but stopped supporting him after the rigged election claims outside Des Moines in Pella Iowa whether with Mr Trump or against him some Republicans telling us the former president's Federal indictment will not move the needle no matter how many details they know about the case just the fact that he's facing Federal indictment that's not enough to push you away I don't think so no Doug Yates says he's still in Mr Trump's corner but thinks Republicans will nominate someone else Andrea holmbeck wants to move on I feel like he has gotten to be too extreme in his personality to represent the Republican Party well others think the federal charges could push more voters to Mr Trump I think it is a double standard uh what we're seeing you know between the Democrats and the Republicans so does it move you toward him no because I'm still taking a step back I'm still going to wait but at the same time this isn't a deal breaker for you no I don't think so no no I'm just gonna wait Mr Trump came in second in Iowa in 2016 and still went on to win the nomination but the stakes are higher this time as the former president tries to show he has a lock on the party a loss here would show he's beatable Lester all right Jesse curse thank you tonight hundreds of wildfires in Canada are still burning out of control and while the Hazardous smoke is finally easing up it's all raising concerns over whether dangerous air could be the new normal and Thompson reports the ominous view that dominated skylines in the Northeast today finally dissipated the Washington Monument soars again New York's Empire State Building now gleams and the City of Brotherly Love breathes easier a day after smoke from the Canadian wildfires smothered the city with the worst air quality in the world anxious philadelphians breathe a cautious sigh of relief and the air feels a lot cleaner I don't feel as uncomfortable as a precaution City Schools were remote the schoolyards empty at St Christopher's Hospital for Children where asthma accounts for 20 percent of the ER cases Dr James reingold says families heeded the warnings I do think this was a nice opportunity for families to take stock of do they have their medicines maybe your inhaler was only down to a few Puffs because this problem isn't going away it definitely isn't despite the improvements tonight's 64 million Americans remain under air quality alerts as more than 400 wildfires burn in Canada in drier warmer conditions made worse by climate change combined with the buildup of fuel in the forests there's no doubt that the climate is changing and it's caused by humans and it's happening at a pace that is really playing out in our eyes Erica Smithwick director of Penn State's Earth and environmental systems Institute does not think this week's event is one and done we could see that happen again here on the East Coast we also could see more fires happening in other parts of North America but now it's back to Life As We Knew It with Philly and New York City Schools returning to in-person classes Monday Lester and Thompson all right thank you in 60 seconds you're in vandersloot face to face with Natalie Holloway's family in court today plus the new move by automakers that will make charging your electric car a lot easier we're back with a major development in the case of Natalie Holloway you're in vandersloot who's been connected with her 2005 disappearance pleaded not guilty to fraud and extortion charges on U.S soil today Sam Brock was in the courtroom Sam good evening yeah Lester good evening for all the build up in getting to this arraignment it was quick three to four minutes the judge there did read out the charges for jorn Vander sloot extortion and wire fraud which carry up to 20 years each if he's convicted he also assigned a federal Defender who pleaded on behalf of his client not guilty now Natalie Holloway's entire family Leicester was inside of that courtroom her mom dad and brother several Rose behind only feet away from Johan vandersloot in fact when vandersloot walked into the courtroom he was wearing a light-colored shirt handcuffs and jeans and there was just silence Beth her mom was stoic the whole time but did occasionally look over at the suspect and I spoke with Matt who is Natalie's brother who said he's glad about this legal movement but they want answers and they want to know what happened to Natalie Lester all right Sam Brock tonight thank you we're back in a moment with the future of the road and what some automakers are doing that could make it a lot easier to own an electric car thank you we're back with news about Netflix's Crackdown on password sharing the plan seems to be paying off at least for the company as Netflix had its best four days of new user subscriptions in years average signups reached 73 000 per day at the time according to an analytics firm there were cancellations but far more new customers now to our series future of the road one of the barriers to switching to an electric car has been where to charge it but as Jake Ward tells us that's about to get a whole lot easier electric vehicles are quiet and clean but finding a compatible charger has been messy until now so the charging has been uh kind of Hit or Miss whenever I get to the station plugging in is about to become faster and easier for thousands of American drivers GM joining Ford in a landmark agreement to allow their vehicles to use all Tesla Chargers this collaboration that we're doing nearly doubles the amount of chargers that our GM customers will have access to Tesla's so-called North American charging standard now in position to become the norm across the United States I think it's a good idea because uh the GMC's already Tesla is already ahead of the game and they're already starting to put Chargers everywhere imagine a world in which every car maker had its own gas station and you couldn't use another one if it didn't match your brand well when it comes to EVS that's the kind of world we've been living in until now on a recent trip through Texas working charges for our GM vehicle were hard to find nope nope nope it took a random charger a rural hotel to save us charging yes existing EVS like a Chevy bolt or a Ford Maki will be able to use an adapter at a Tesla station in 2024 and by 2025 the companies say they'll install Tesla style charging ports in all their new electric vehicles the fact that Tesla General Motors and Ford have joined forces it does put a fair amount of pressure for some of the other automakers to join suit because as they look at this Market they think that this is going to be the standard going forward President Biden has committed 7.5 billion dollars to build a nationwide network of 500 000 Chargers by 2030. today the White House says Tesla can join competitors in taking advantage of those funds but stop short of calling for a single type of charging connection but now that three major car companies have settled their differences on the best way to plug in the goal of an all-electric America seems much closer Jake board NBC News San Francisco all right up next there are heroes and then there's Travis Mills we'll introduce you to the vet who is inspiring America with its new mission to give back finally tonight let me introduce to you staff sergeant Travis Mills a quadruple amputee who's helping other wounded veterans during their most difficult times and inspiring America the war in Afghanistan became the longest war in U.S history April 10th of 2012 we went out on a patrol and I took my backpack off and I sat on the ground and underneath it was actually a bomb Travis Mills then on his third tour of Duty was airlifted to a field hospital and underwent 14 hours of surgery Judy neuber was a trauma nurse in the ER and when he left our ER it was like that's it there's no way this boy will survive these injuries and there's just no way but Travis did survive when he got home a quadruple amputee his wife had a simple message for him we're gonna get through this together my daughter was right there by my side my whole recovery learning how to walk and run with me inspired by the help he received Travis wanted to help other vets so he and his wife built a Retreat House in Maine supported by donations veterans and their families come here to begin to heal Anthony Cunningham served 20 years until a training accident left him with two crushed legs he says here he and his family can just relax he came up here with the wife and I'ma tell you uh wow we needed that though Anthony's wife Adrian agrees I feel like I'm constantly going as much as he is and for the first time in a long time I was actually able to just sit around and do absolutely nothing according to Travis mission accomplished the foundation was created and exists because I was shown that I'm stronger than I thought I was I was shown that life was going to go on no matter what my injuries are we're thankful that's a message that Travis continues to share with the thousands of vets he inspires including that nurse who helped save his life in Afghanistan she now volunteers for his foundation I'm so glad he didn't die do I look at what he's doing he saved so many lives by being Travis people look at Travis they come here they see that they can do things that they didn't think they could do
