dude this is Tyreek Hill the fastest player on the planet running a fly motion dig route those are things that are just like like you said they're uncoverable they're Unstoppable it's a trend and Miami's kind of set it and what we'll see down the road it's gonna start showing up [Music] welcome to scheme I am Josh Norris that is Colt McCoy our quarterback won Colt 19 games into Mike McDaniel's NFL coaching career and in that very short span of time he has proven that if his players are healthy he can construct an offense that I'll call I don't know uncoverable indefensible that was clearly evident in week one against Braden and saly's Chargers defense posting 36 points thanks to an awesome performance from tuatanga vailoa those guys are nuts I mean you watch this tape Miami is doing things that are just literally Unstoppable yeah 16 explosive plays in week one that's the second most tied for the second most in a game since 2014. before we get into any of that goodness and there's plenty of it because they are doing offense differently than anyone else across the league Colt let's set that Foundation that you talked about all right we got first and five they're gonna go empty formation what does empty tell you well empty tells you that it's Zone coverage you have a corner guarding a running back you have Khalil Mack walked out over the top of their best player Tyree kill okay it's known Zone coverage I thought personally tuited a great job second play of the game first pass play of the Season uh being very disciplined with his eyes he holds one holds it down the middle I want you to watch these are little things in the in the NFL but watch to his eyes here okay he motions the running back back he knows it's zone now it's just playing it's playing quarterback at this point I know the coverage is kind of a cheat code but watch his eyes he's gonna take the snap and he just that one second where he holds his eyes down the middle just keeps both or keeps Khalil Mack inside and what do you know it's an explosive play to Tyreek Hill I mean on a quick game simple play to start the season we started an empty last time in Motion in the backfield now let's start in the backfield and motion to empty what does this tell us now we got a linebacker walked out on the running back we got press across the board here here here now Tua knows what's going on just like the play before he knows he's got his own coverage great eyes finds a quick game completion on the out route to his best player first down all we're gonna do here is is call Quick game again right away you get inside leverage right here you get two deep safeties but right here you get outside leverage right that means one of these guys is coming down and he's going to funnel him there right they're trying to double him and they're trying to double Tyree kill here okay I love where the Dolphins align Tyrique right he's inside now he's going to get a free release because he's off the ball and you don't good luck containing leverage on him but from this position it's like if I run a quick slant right here I've already got outside leverage it's a quick hitter and if if Derwin James misses the tackle it's an explosive play you're getting a quick simple slant everybody else is out of the way you know pre-snap this is your Zone side right you get Zone coverage I'm gonna work this through see recite I'm going to work the concept if I get man here's my answer great recognition by Tua it's not that hard that was a great ball but a simple quick game slant from an inside receiver turns into 20 yards in explosives play like these are the things that make the Dolphins so stinking dangerous I'm trying to get in your brain here so just from the alignment of you know the three defensive backs at the top all having inside Leverage for you as the quarterback you would then look backside to the one that has outside leverage because we know we have the slant versus that working on the inside and that's just the simple formula that's going through your brain yeah the simple formula is going through my my brain is this right I'll probably work the concept here and I'll work Tyrique who's off the ball on a simple flat route and get the ball out of my hands this is quick game this is McDaniels recognizing hey it's first down after an explosive play Let's go empty and see what they do I'll give you a man answer I'll give you a Zone answer but you're not going to take a sack and you're going to get the ball out of your hands right this guy's got outside leverage right as a quarterback it's quick game if this was drop back you know that he has help right here if he's running a deep dig if he's running an over route he's dead right because that's his responsibility but it's quit game I'd rather work a slant route from an inside receiver here then throw a go ball here right it's early in the game if this is a third and ten play and a Gotta Have It situation you might hold your eyes and keep this guy here to throw a go ball this is just QB 101 by Tua doing exactly what his coach has dialed up for him to do he's not doing anything crazy he sees the leverage he understands that his man and he delivers a slant route that turns into an explosive play it's a dream and again like let's not pretend that every team has a Jalen waddle and every team has a Tyreek Hill like you're throwing a slant route to one of your players who now outruns the safety who has him doubled and now you're in field goal range after two plays on your first draft of the Season those are things that are just like like you said they're uncoverable they're Unstoppable well let's get into the goodness then because 33 of tuatanga fellows week one passes were 15 plus yards down the field Colt he completed 60 percent of those um let's dive into how Mike McDaniel construct this offense and the perfect placement that two had to one of the most lethal pass catchers in the league Tyree kill we talked about how Miami started the game they played really efficiently especially up to this point so Mike McDaniel said look I've spread you out I've thrown quick game I'm getting easy completions right let's go big people so when I say big people I mean they bring two tight ends in the game we call this 12 Personnel now you get two tight ends two receivers one back we set the formation into the boundary because we know when we do that and they want to play a heavy box seven seven eight man box Derwin James is the Box player he's down now we get single High coverage okay if I'm Mike McDonald I'm like this is a dream like this is the coverage that I want but what I want to talk about is how Miami is the trendsetters in this crazy short motion a lot of times teams will motion across the ball or they'll motion outside get set and then the defense has a chance to communicate like hand signal it's going to go from three deep to quarters or it's going to go from quarters to single high whatever it is cover six but what Miami does a tremendous job and they started doing a little bit of it last year what they're doing a great job is these super fast motions with their speed guys that don't give the defense time to adjust and time to you know go from single high to cover six or whatever it is can I make quick decisions so fast right and as a quarterback that doesn't affect you at all because I'm playing fast I've got my speed guys in motion like I know the concept I know the play and I'll just read it out but watch what this simple simple motion does again this is Tyree emotions out look what happens like this safety is 20 yards deep this whole grass right here now I'm gonna attack that part of the field with my best player with heavy play action I'm pulling a guard and I'm keeping a tight end in right so now I'm getting three guys out on routes with heavy Max protection and also the back can stay in if he wants okay and now what I did on my scheme hats off to Mike McDonald as I know it's single high I know Derwin James is down this is the part of the field that I'm going to expose clean pocket two it doesn't get touched and you have an explosive play to one of your best receivers I mean he's just using his speed right he's flying out there the defense can't adjust like he has a Stutter Step he doesn't know what to do the linebackers are stuck down because it's it's heavy play action pass in the middle of field I mean it's just gigantic I know it's a small detail but I from an observer outside of NFL quarterback rooms and play calling that little change of the short motion that short burst that still in I guess it's easier to use with Tyreek Hill than maybe other wide receivers across the league because the Dude can get up to you know zero to sixty in three to four steps whereas as you talked about the full field Motion One allows other receivers to get up to full speed but then at the same time allows defenses to have more time to adjust to have more time to react more times you roll their coverage if they want to a lot of times you see these shifts these motions you know say Tyrique starts out over here and he fly motions all the way and then runs his route well what that does is when you know a lot of defenses have checks like when you motion across the ball you know Derwin James will rotate here he'll rotate down the corner back back up and now you have they're able to do that even on fly motions what this does is when he speed Motions like here right away and then goes like where's the communication happening from here and here and here like you're not getting it right it's it's it's it's just it's okay to give you better answers right and dude this is Tyreek Hill the fastest player on the planet running a fly motion Digraph he's past the breaking point where a DB thinks he's gonna break I mean it's just it's just really hard to stop and it's fun to watch and it's impressive all those things um and I just think it's it's a trend and Miami's kind of set it and what we'll see down the road after we watch a few more tapes of these other teams like it's going to start showing up yeah we'll get to that in a moment because uh you know imitation is a sincerest form of flattery you might be getting some of that across the league already yeah I mean it just the visual to me Colt is like an F1 car turning the corner and you trying to backpedal to keep up with it that's exactly where that corner looks like there on that film okay this is the net there's way more of what Mike McDaniel and how to utilize this motion to create even more cavities on a defense so you saw Tyrique on a fly motion now let's line up Tyreke out here right he's gonna be the the outside receiver you know pre-snap it looks like hey I've got man coverage man coverage like man coverage man coverage okay now if I was to snap the ball right here it's probably gonna be a good play right it's it's man coverage I got two high safeties it could be robber where you're you know like the first or second play of the game where you know you're gonna get leverage help somewhere or it could just stay two men right maybe that's the best answer to cover a Tyrique and Jalen waddle like they've already exposed us the entire first half now you're gonna get a speed motion nobody goes with him and they get you right this happens this is a great adjustment by the Chargers right they've been beat they've showed man coverage they're getting hit on slant routes they're getting hit hit on over route so you can't contain Leverage how about Brandis daily says you know what let's show man right across the board and let's play zone right good good adjustment like really good adjustment but it's hard to beat when you have a fly motion what these motions do across the ball is it can it controls these guys eyes it controls him and him and him because these are your three underneath Zone players when you're playing Zone you're dropping to a spot and you're looking at the quarterback yeah now I have a dude flying across my face and I don't know if he's stopping right here if he's gonna keep going right here oh wait they're gonna actually snap it on the Move okay there's so many things that are hard to see with that I personally see to us saying okay I think this is man but as soon as I get this motion right as soon as he comes across the ball and nobody travels with him I know it's Zone okay so great recognition by Tua here comes the motion and again you get right here where's the open spot on the field right eyes eyes are all here right he's to his spot he's ready to jump the flat or jump the hook right here is where you're trying to attack and what do you know it's your best player that finds that void all based on this simple motion of the tight end or receiver that distracts them right doesn't always have to be speed until it finds the soft spot in the defense that was a pretty decent ball and Tyreek Hill does the rest and it's a 35-40 yard gain yeah you called it simple and we keep harping on the motion because that kind of is the wrinkle that is the change and we see it throughout the league where when players do cross the formation sometimes they're jogging sometimes they're almost shuffling across it on this this is full speed right and I'm going to put myself cult in 31 other teams fan bases chairs right now and say hey if Mike McDaniel is doing this why can't my play caller doing it do it well week one after a summer of reviewing and reflecting and seeing what this Dolphins offense did you know in the first eight weeks of last season as being the most dominant unit in the league we now see some friends of Mike McDaniel let's head on over to LA with Sean McVay and the Rams who are stealing from Mike McDaniel in this Dolphins offense okay so here we go we got the Rams start of the third quarter 11 minutes left like they've missed a couple field goals like this is a huge drive but Watch What Happens here okay the Rams are going to line up in just your typical you know three by one formation and you don't really know the coverage you get a single high safety you get this guy who's you know eight yards off he's pressed he's pressed right he's pressed you know to me I would say I would feel I'd be feeling pretty confident that I'm getting man coverage but I'm not like I'm not real sure you got two guys two threats to the side of the back right that aren't known rushers and then you got Bobby Wagner standing in the opposite side B gov okay like this is a really tough look by the Seahawks right and so you'll see they'll ID here they'll push here um just in case one of these guys has the back and man coverage they'll go there and the running back look at his eyes he's disciplined he knows exactly what he's got he's going to step up and go to Bobby Wagner right there okay but if I'm a quarterback I gotta recognize okay I got my running back who's probably a really great player on you know a guy who had 19 tackles in this game okay like that's a big ask and for Matthew it's all about getting the ball out like that's 38 I know I'm gonna get heated up but watch this play you're gonna get two two at will in motion now that I've set the stage here and snap it on the Move okay now good luck Garden a speed guy 2-2 Atwell now you have a big alert you playing this top down oh my goodness he's my first read and he's wide open well how did he get wide open the two DBS at a Breaking Point run into each other okay that wouldn't happen if you line up in a bunch of formation and run the play right it might but the chances of it happen when you speed motion into a bunch and make the defense communicate like this is the kind of stuff that happens the reason why he stands there is because when there is crossing routes and patterns and whatever they're gonna do like you don't want all the DBS on the same level so if he was lined up right here I'm saying that's all on the same level the Seahawks are doing a nice job of playing on different levels but with this motion it just throws everything off right now you get your speed guy one-on-one massive play in this game ball inside the 10-yard line and you score two plays later watch your running back on Bobby Wagner that is that is not easy like at all okay and Colt I think what you said about tutu is important he is not Tyreek Hill yet he has speed and so Sean McVay knowing that he's not not going to get 100 Tyree kill but is able to set him up in ways that manipulates coverage in the exact same way can be important to again open up areas of the field that you are attacking these are these are play callers these are guys who are looking for every way I can possibly give my guys the best Advantage right what I love about this play cause is mcveigh's calling it on First and Ten like he's pushing the ball down the field he's got Stafford in the zone so to speak and he's being very aggressive and I love that right you'll see guys like McVeigh Shanahan McDaniel like when they get in a Groove and they like what they're seeing and they're like kind of determining the coverages based off these shifts and Motions like you're gonna see some really good football so here we go we're gonna get 2-2 coming across the ball right it's a speed motion it's not a slow motion now he's got a free release with speed right no hands on him pushing down the field and just watch this dime by Stafford right you want to talk about a quarterback who's feeling it like there is a tiny window right here you have a deep safety you have a linebacker with eyes on the quarterback you have a backside hook player with eyes on the quarterback you have the curl flat player with eyes on the quarterback and you have a corner who's a deep thirds player who's going to take away that route with eyes on the quarterback right now this happens a lot in zone coverage right you're throwing around Defenders you're manipulating guys there as we watch two do it play one on the first drive of the season with the dolphins right but this is a trust throw this is a dime and this is a deep dagger throw off the Speed motion and Stafford puts in the only places he can put it and it's a gigantic play for a first down just this little token fake right here holds him just enough so when it holds him you know the backside hook player is not gonna get involved late on this dagger throw right you're beating him and you're being the curl flat player that's out here these motions and these speed motions that happen right at the timing of the snap I just think these things are going to show up a lot in the next few weeks in the NFL after what we've seen in week one from McDaniel from Sean McVay and from what we're about to see when we turn on the Packers tape cult like you said not a surprise that we're seeing popular important successful Concepts throughout the league people borrowing stealing from Mike McDaniel it would make sense that Sean McVay is doing it obviously Sean McVeigh was on the same Washington coaching staff with Mike McDaniel another man on that same coaching staff up in Green Bay Matt LaFleur we also saw him using the short out full speed motion here in week one yeah exactly you know you nailed it all these guys were together you know I don't think they'll ever admit that they're stealing from each other but these guys are just like they're Geniuses they're smart like they study the game they they know their personnel what can I do to you know identify the defense for my quarterback but you know get my players in the best positions to go my place right you've seen it with Miami we saw it with the Rams now let's turn on the Packers tape right here okay so points right here going into halftime you know generally is a big indicator of what happens at the end of the game and if you win or lose so third and ten look the Packers line up in three by one known Zone coverage right receiver receiver tight end receiver right safety safety Corner nickel like you know this isn't man coverage that's not hard to see so as a quarterback you're saying okay I'm gonna have eyes on me and I've got to find a window to throw this ball in but watch this design we've seen it over and over short speed motion to a stack now defenses have to communicate you know who doesn't see this motion this guy okay Corners deep thirds player right you're getting the safety you're getting a buzz player he becomes a hook player he becomes a flat player he's the hook player he's responsible for three vertical okay when the tight end chips which is a great job by the Packers ships The Edge rusher and then he gets out right everybody plays their Zone he looks up three you know why you can't see three because generally three comes from here or here right they're gonna go here or they're gonna switch and come here right that's who his eyes are on you know who he doesn't see he doesn't see three being here okay so when he's short motions and then runs this way like he it's hard to see like it's not necessarily his fault this is the structure of the zone right so here's Jordan love he Motors him down he knows his three buzz right he gets his eyes out here to the X doesn't love it what do you know wide open because this guy doesn't think number three receiver running vertical is coming from the outside this is a little bit of a master class from Jordan love like look at where his eyes are to force Tremaine Edmonds who they just spent a boatload of money on to move out of this window and open up the second window throw to Jane Reed a rookie exactly I think Jordan love plays this outstanding right this is just great scheme we've talked about these short motions speed motions to end Breakers or to digs like we've seen it over and over we've seen it pop up it's popped up all over the tape what Jordan does reading this plays he says look I know I got to get a chunk I got to get the ball down the field right I do have press out here on my X so I'm going to look at him right he looks at him right there sets the defense right if you'll watch watch Tremaine Edmonds here who let me just tell you phenomenal football player right worth every penny like smart guy tough like he I think so much respect for him but watch his eyes he's he looks and he sees three motioning down he's like no way three's running over the top here like that's not my guy right so then he gets confused sees Jordan's eyes there and Jordan's eyes come back like it's just it's just a ridiculous execution by the Packers but more than that like more than Jordan love like making a great throw like this guy's in the zone he knows that's the soft spot it's great execution from the top from the play call normally he'll he'll have a go ball he'll have a go ball he'll run the over and Tremaine Edmonds will look him up and carry him and now there's no one open on the field yeah and it's not just the manipulation um of the route Concepts and where they're coming from but it's also on top of that when you get the manipulation from the quarterback with his vision to move the linebackers as well then that just takes it over the top that's what also makes it successful yes to a great eyes Stafford great eyes Jordan love like very disciplined with his eyes and it creates some explosive plays so you got your speed guy right lined up outside he's gonna come in on short motion and then run a seven route and just watch here he's going to look him up and say you're not going to beat me this way ever again right coming from the outside and the Packers say well I'm not running the override anymore they're on a seven cut what I think opens this up is this receiver does an outstanding job of winning with speed and clearing out the corner the corner is the only player who's going to take this ball away right you're looking at a Shell coverage it might be Buzz he might be rotating down but like this guy can easily fall off on a seven cut and as a quarterback that's really hard to see like you're trusting your receiver to winless speed and to get him out of there right and he does a great job here and again right when he comes in on the short motion this guy doesn't know what he's doing right he's playing his own he's a dropper his eyes are on the quarterback he sees this guy coming here he's thinking I saw that play already and then we put our foot down and run a seven cut it's just overall great coaching first of all and great execution on the Packers part like they're a step ahead and it becomes an easy read for the quarterback who's by the way making his first start on the road in the division against the Bears not an easy place to play and I thought Jordan love played lives out yeah but you give them plays like this and you calm him down he hits his back foot he's reading the picture and that was a strike cult what I love is you know when Sean McVay hit the scene he was the hot new thing people borrowed from him we know that Matt leflore has been a long time successful play caller in the league at multiple spots people have borrowed from him and now their friend their old colleague now Mike McDaniel again 19 games into his NFL career as a play caller these established successful coaches are now taking bits and pieces of his offense and as you said they're not going to be the only ones we'll look back here in week four and week five and we'll see a bunch of these short fast motions that give people up to speed that really uh melt the brains of defenses and structures that they have out there on that side of the ball absolutely and again those are fantastic play callers this league is is fun to watch and you're always going to pick up on Trends right especially on offense and what we saw this week I think you'll start to see a lot more of it in weeks to come and you're trying to get the ball your best players well how how can we do that like how can we get our speed guys you know free releases and running down the field um creating like a ton of stress on defenses and all the coverages they can play and I think you'll start to see this trend more and more all right that's going to do it unfortunately we don't even get time to talk about how Tua is elevating this offense too in terms of winning outside the structure of the play which is a totally I would say new element to this Miami team some of them were on Third and sixes third and fifteens third and tens hopefully continues that so we can dive in on future episodes of scheme before you get out of here be sure to hit that subscribe button Colt McCoy will be joining me and this channel every single week to dive in to some of the elements of some great play calls throughout the league every single week of this NFL season we'll see you all next time
