the bear is hard to hide secret weapon has become a short yardage expert Gaza linebacker I saw him coming to me I'd turn and run I think you got to have a little bit of fun in football it's fun for him really he feels like he's involved he feels like you know he's contributing but the fun could be over for the undefeated Bears if their quarterback Jim McMahon banged around last Monday night by the Packers is troubled by a hip bruise and a tender ankle the number-two man Steve four is also playing hurt with a back injury that would leave Ohio State rookie Mike Tom Zach 24 years ago a Georgia rookie quarterback Fran Tarkenton led the expansion Minnesota Vikings to their first victory in the NFL an upset of the powerful Chicago Bears Tarkenton successor is the dangerous Tommy Cramer whose touchdown pass to Leo Lewis in the closing seconds gate Minnesota a win last Sunday over San Diego today Cramer leads the Mike Bulger field in Chicago the Vikings at four and three and the Chicago Bears unbeaten with seven consecutive wins perfect afternoon for football 54 degrees winds from the north hello everybody I'm Tim Ryan with Johnny Morris here at Soldier Field and Johnny a key game for the Vikings it certainly is Tim as you see the Bears are seven oh if the Vikings don't win they would be four games behind Chicago a division title would be almost impossible that have to fight for a wild-card spot so this is a big game for both teams but especially the Minnesota Vikings like Detroit the Lions at home against Miami there's one [Applause] gets things underway we got the conference over the 20 to the 23 yard line and Chicago will start for the first offensive series David Howard making the tackle on Willie Gault Jim McMahon play hurt comes out at quarterback Walter Payton matsui the running backs Dennis McKinnon and Willie Gault of the wide receivers covert ports Kelvin Berg Tom fair Keith van Horn and Emery Moorehead is the tight end the offensive line for the Chicago Bears undefeated in seven consecutive games the only other team of the lake was that record the Los Angeles Rams most of you will see them later 22 yard line of Chicago man but takes it up to the 25-yard line a gain of about three yards good defensive reaction by the veteran Fred McNeill playing for the injured Chris Martin defensively for the Vikings in their four-man front elshire Martin Mulaney and Keith Mel are the linebackers the rookie Dolan on the left side stud well the veteran in the middle Chris Martin the injured Chris Martin unable to go today with a knee injury and the deal will be there in the secondary Rufus Besson will he deal on the corners browner his door now the secret second down stopper what their own 25 opening offensive series gets it off to Moorhead where it breaks a tackle and takes it to the their pair of Vikings number 39 making the initial contact and the offside signal is a gift 16-yard there's number 79 decline first down number 79 is done the Bears were quick to take advantage of that situation they knew they had a free play so McMahon just has stuck in there got it to Moorhead Brooke a tackle by Dennis Johnson so the Bears the mood the Vikings moved with now with Tim Newton number 96 the rookie from Florida those March and Mullaney become the defensive ends Denis Johnson comes into play my Studwell and push coverage again on the wide running by the Vikings it was McNeil who got him and it was Studwell who forced him to run a little deeper than he wanted to may have gained a yard on the play that was a heck of a play by both the linebackers as you're going to see a stud Welton McNeal 54 they don't go with the action of Payton the other way they hand off on the counter to Matsui and look at the pursuit by the inside and the outside linebacker Studwell and McNeil great play by the Minnesota Vikings because of paint can be a great deep layer they didn't go for at that time from ABARES 42 [Music] once it was [Music] four maybe five yards on his own individual effort Studwell and McNeil again the tacklers mikheil 33 years of age in his 12th year earlier in the season we signed by the Vikings and now finds himself back in his old starting role because of the injury the three-year man Chris marks today it'll be third down in for Chicago from their own 46 yard line we'll move to the shotgun Kenne marjoram is in the game for Chicago why versus motion then and whistles now as the flags came down keep the lard number 75 was one of the obvious culprits a question always as to whether they were drawn encroachment number 75 push down red wire eleven the fracture it must be something that McMahon is doing also because more than one biking actually jumped off a couple or three so there may be a little trick of the trade for Jim McMahon on these Katie's account because the Vikings have been off twice now and that's a key one that gives him a first down at the Viking 49 yard line actually the 48 so the Bears into Minnesota territory on this first offensive series 12 33 remaining [Music] rosette intended for McKinnon McKinnon tripped over the 20-yard line but I don't think he was going to catch up to that ball anyway Johnny no it was throwing a little bit too far and McCauley was on the coverage that time MacKinnon playing with a sore knee and they're a little bit worried about it being an arthritic knee because he's had constant problems with it after surgery and of course he's one of the keys to the Chicago Bear offense catches for 18 point 3 yards per carry but good coverage there MacKinnon practice only one day this week he's been bothered with that knee all season long [Music] lots of time up the middle of Moorhead he's got a first down at the 30 Joey [Applause] they're first down [Applause] the play had whistled an another 16 yard game for Moorhead yes and that had to be a perfect pass because Moorhead was well covered now you can see off the play action and the Vikings put the Blitz on Studwell is stopped there on a good block as you can watch the tight coverage Nord was right there and the Moorhead went up made the grab very perfect play by the Chicago Bears it had to be perfect because it was well covered the 33 yard line [Music] [Applause] adjustment to the ball Johnny he certainly did as you can see that the Vikings put the Blitz on again this time he took to the outside and MacKinnon who was beating Carly but he was over to his outside shoulder and he had to take his head away from the ball and adjust and then dive into the end zone a heck of a play by Dennis MacKinnon who does affairs strike quickly a couple of penalties helped the cause for Chicago Jennison mechanic [Applause] [Music] [Applause] it is good so the Chicago Bears marched down the field a couple of miscues by Minnesota contributing in it is seven the Duncan Bears the Bears have opened the scoring on their first offensive series going 78 yards and seven plays using up three 31 on the clock two rushes and five passes McMahon to MacKinnon 33 yards out and so goes the strategy that the Bears were thinking about trying to run the ball because of the fact that they feared Tommy Kramer's quarterbacking so much the truck Oh a short kick short kick to muster Ryan [Music] [Applause] [Music] yes I think three William Perry was in on that tackle [Applause] [Music] wide receivers boy Swilly couch Erwin on the tight end Steve Jordan [Music] [Applause] the prayers are in the 46 defense on the first play he whining bro Kramer has a man in the tank Jordan close to the first down yardage number 83 Steve Jordan a heck of a play by Jordan as they beat the 46 defense he had man for man coverage Wilber Marshall had to cover Jordan all over the field as you look at the defensive line of the Chicago Bears with Hartenstein McMichael Hampton and Richard dent and linebackers Wilson Singletary and Marshall who was on the coverage that last time and there is the same defensive secondary they've had all season anchored by the free safety Gary fencing Steve Jordan cutting passes last week against Andy Aaron Nelson has the first down yardage a flag on the play it's gonna go against Minnesota again I believe read Wyatt [Applause] milling the penalty against the Vikings Anderson went forward you can go on motion but you got to go sideways alfred anderson ii you man from bein illegal motion number 20 suckin down Alec charged Aaron Nelson number 20 with the infraction we thought it was Anderson the effect is the same a five-yard loss will leave its second in about five and a half the ball now back at the 36 yard line of the Vikings all the talk this week in Chicago has been about the refrigerator [Music] quickly to the tight end and see as jordan immediately after a gain of only a couple as well was Wilbur Marshall number 58 a pickup well a little more than we thought on forward progress it will be about a four yard game to the 40 yard line and leaves four and a long yard carry comes in Part B Stein comes out for the Chicago Bears berry normally plays in the short yardage situations defensively [Applause] [Music] Carter Jones and Lewis the wide receivers for the Vikings [Music] yeah William Perry who has hit the national scene like a rocket a sky rocket that time he's playing on deepest ah he just busting south goes right was slowly I believe and just comes in for the sacca streamer had no time to even get a short pass off William Perry now one of the last two-way players Vikings will have to punt after the the Bears good kick by Coleman [Music] Paul where he whistled dad however it is bears ball at their 32 yard line as the ball popped loose after Taylor hit the ground and with 842 remaining first quarter bears 7 Minnesota nothing first year at Soldier Field Perry with its first sack of the season and look how big he is literally here in Chicago a full page in the Chicago sun-times he's become an instant hero here with his what he did last Monday night and what he may do today I guess maybe Tim Newton might be that man who knows so for the Minnesota Vikings next week after this game because we have rumors and he's gonna be after the refrigerator man down on the goal line Harry bolston [Music] first down Chicago up the middle of height in Moorhead his third catch on free passes to him he has a first down in Vikings territory a 17-yard game for Moorhead Nord and dolmen on the tackle well I was getting back to my seat didn't get a chance to see that play too well but one thing you can notice about Jim McMahon is that he'll look off watch him look to the right and then BOOM just on a delay Moorhead comes out of the line and then takes off down the field breaks a tackle and makes another key catch [Applause] Moorhead's third cats 48 yards so far from Emery Moorehead is seem to get better breaks one tackle trying to get to the 40-yard line and it was Joey browner who stopped him after Willy teal got a hand a hand on his ankle but Payton just kept going forward and actually will it till did a pretty good job considering what he had to contend with is you're going to see three offensive linemen get out quickly there they are you can see board since there and then mark ports 62 knock steal out 37 but teal gets a a hand on Peyton's foot and kind of makes him stumble and does a good play considering the circumstance of the you know the children 75 picked up four feet 157 rushing yards for 14,000 on this career hatin again as the first down nifty moves depress the first tackle through a pair of linebackers Studwell defensive end duck Martin pulled him down but it's a first down Chicago as they get the first down on the ground this time to them Minnesota 32 and Walter Payton has always had his best days against the Minnesota Vikings he has more yards against them than any other team including one year remember he rushed for 275 yards in one game almost 2,000 yards against the Vikings and but Grant says he he said the harder she got Wilburys what he told us yesterday the Bears number but so far we have had the opportunity lots of time for madmen but good coverage downfield and he had to throw to the release man Sooey an excellent response by Willie teal and stud well as they had soui hit as soon as he caught the ball there will be little if any gain on the play excellent defense says McMahon had time to look downfield but the coverage was there deep by the Vikings secondary they'll give Suey just ER he probably wears the biggest facemask that you'll ever see on a quarterback he has a huge birdcage there wants to protect those pearly teeth he says doesn't want to get him knocked out I don't blame her Chicago with 106 yards of offense with 550 remaining in the first quarter Minnesota has only five yards [Music] that's away from best the best did a good job turning him into the trap pulled down by duck Martin and Willie deal after a gain of maybe five yards it'll leaves third and along three a little more than that okay you're going to see here's Rufus best number 21 coming up here on in on the tackle and they just crosses over too far and so he cut back and it was a great block by Payton on that play on Mullaney for all people that's don't usually like the Broncos [Music] 27 yard line [Applause] the motion reverses inside first Township go to the 21 yard line step well the team leading tackler on the Vikings with Neil elshire but in the stop on Kate or Chicago first down they're getting chunks of yardage that just an inside handoff ports comes across on a great trap block had it not been for Studwell who filled the hole quickly there Payton could have gone for a big yardage as Bears moving the ball at will here early in the game there was I was mentioning his 275 yards against [Music] and McMahon didn't like something he saw on first down at the 22 and the Bears will take a timeout so we have 4 12 remaining first quarter at Soldier Field Chicago seven Minnesota nothing dimmer and Johnny Mars back in Soldier Field where the Bears lead seven to nothing and the Bears approaching Perry Territory Minnesota the motion mckinnon off the ball [Music] the rush in the corner don't actually found himself out-of-bounds try to get back in bounds you can't do that to begin with he did catch the ball and as it turned out he was head at least one foot out of bounds well you can see a great reaction by McMahon after the fake here as you can see stud well almost had him dead to rights and McMahon got away from the head to ad limit and the Bears almost came up with a touchdown the sculpt was out of bounds it was a good call [Applause] now here comes Mark Mulaney after McMahon throws the ball and gave him a little shot there but he says no I didn't touch him no no I had tried to stop for defensive back five of them down the secondary on second and ten the command flares it off the plane Brown on the beach can't do it good work by Joey Brown or number forty-seven who was right there as the ball arrived a third year man from USC and drove Payton out of bounds you know that was a super play because browner had to kick Payton man for man out there after Payton caught the ball and he's really having a good season they said at home at the strong safety spot has come up with a lot of key fumbles and forced fumbles and interceptions playing very very good football that was an example of it because how many times have you seen Walter Payton fake guys out there in the fat [Music] Wow [Applause] [Music] [Applause] faint man's push down are they said well made is going to be against Chicago interference offensive interference is the preliminary signal we'll hear it from Fred Wyatt momentarily now they may have they might have called that on I'm gonna take a guess here though I might have called that on Peyton I'm not sure cuz the flag was real late and he had come over the middle that's interference number 34 third down we've got it yes I think he pushed off and that's it one of those situations where a defender confronts the offensive receiver and the referees judgment as to who pushed off or who was doing something illegal and Peyton got a little push off and you've got a couple steps there on Studwell but that's a big job for stud well anyway there's some pretty circumstances to try and cover Peyton 353 to go in this first parade where the Bears backed up now to the Vikings 28 yard line will be third and 15 this is a big series for the pack the Vikings defensive confidence to stop the bear soon like number 86 any margin again good defensive reaction and it was Rufus best number 21 a major tackle after a gain of maybe five yards by Gault who was lined up in the backfield with Payton and you knew something might happen because Golf in three did not go in motion or anything he stuck there and that can cause problems for a defense but not for Minnesota on this play as they were up to the task to stop in Willie Gault so the bear is going to go for a field goal and this used to be Minnesota's meet they used to block all kinds of field goals but some of the new rules they put in they haven't done it as well the last couple three years a 40-yard attempt by Devin Butler [Music] it's the wind [Applause] Vikings kept them out of the end the field goal makes it now the Bears can Minnesota nothing yard fills all the longest of the season into bears at 10:00 Monday late here in the first half this quick tip on taken by Buster Ryan takes it outside gets around and is forced outside Taylor was Butler the kicker coming over to get in on it rhymes second only to golf and kickoff returns in the conference is always dangerous well for an NFL update let's go to brent musburger in New York well Tim the Washington Redskins have jumped up against the Cleveland Browns here's Joe Theismann hitting his rookie wide receiver and Gary Clark made at 14 oh and the Redskins are threatening again let's go back to Tim and Johnny all right Brendan we note that Detroit is taking the early lead over Miami in that game [Music] [Applause] [Music] claiming on first down he's got wide open Darren Nelson a first down to the 35 yard line and Leslie Frazier for stand on a 13-yard pickup and nobody had young mr. Nelson he certainly did not as the Minnesota Vikings are not trying to set up a running game they don't do bothered to do that anymore he just hits these short passes to his backs and tight ends and Nelson had a lot of Running Room that time went out of bounds first down and all of a sudden the Minnesota Vikings are deep in bear territory net shows you what a good kickoff eternal [Music] [Applause] [Music] the first half it has a 37 seconds series [Applause] mr. Shawn was behind the second year man from Florida and wrapped him up after a gain of two maybe only a yard on the play Wilbur Marshall and a fair number one draft choice in year ago as you could see the linebackers adjusting and you could see Marshall who got a game bought last week played off the block by Jones and then a Jordan I should say and comes up to get Anderson Wilber Marshall who is growing into his linebacker position very quickly have to be hold off by Al Harris [Music] as it develops a loss [Applause] [Music] [Applause] with Marcia acted quickly [Music] blue bike [Applause] a good move by Kramer who just seems to have that knack to be able to duck up under the rush generally coming forward inside the pocket and talking to the Kramer he says well it's a challenge to play the bears he said I think they've got the best defense in the league and I like to go out there and try and beat him and he's been very successful at it contrarily the Bears defensive coordinator buddy Ryan he can play the 2855 a few weeks ago [Music] come again [Applause] pop and it is complete in bounds Carter made a dandy cat Anthony Carter with coverage by Leslie Frazier and it's a Viking first down and that's the first paths Anthony Carter spotting quite a a long time as Kramer just threaded the needle this time because he was well covered by less Frazier and it was right there he hung on the ball had gotten of yard beyond the first down marker perfect play by Anthony Carter who Sunday's can be much more of a vital factor in this a Viking passing [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] incomplete just overthrown [Applause] and Wilson led the charge on the Blitz number 55 for the bear and framers did the right thing the Bears game with viola blitz you send your wide receivers up and try and beat the corners man-for-man looked at 55 Otis Wilson really dec Cramer after he got rid of the ball and that's the way you got to try and beat the bear defense because they throw everybody at you and you got linebackers covering Titans by themselves and one on one on the outside any times [Applause] first period the corner pastor leo Kraemer simply had to far too early while he saw the Blitz coming it was coming in hard by Marshall and he just didn't make a good pass on that one because he had to throw it too soon we'll leave a third of the ten and a Ken Taylor was out there on the corner for the Bears on that particular play in comes Darren Nelson out goes Anderson offensively for the Vikings big play for them here in terms of the early portion of this game the first opportunity offensively in the game three wide receivers Leola emotion the pass up the middle is complete with in Sonique order made a good sketch of plague down on the got to the 15-yard line short of the first down but a flag on the play and look at the Bears bring everybody but the kitchen sink here is 50 single Terry's coming up the slot so is booboo Marcia Kramer does a great job of getting the ball off and a good catch but it's all for naught as the Vikings holding number 68 third down ready Wyatt calls Curtis louse the left tackle one of the two 300-pounders on his Viking roster and he's called for the hole and there's a discussion with the bears here been sick and Singletary talking at all voting number 68 third down with the Fred Wyatt the referee so it'll be third down [Applause] ball will be spotted at the 33 yard line we were down over again [Applause] [Music] Vikings this offensive series have had the ball for only 237 of this force period going backwards now territory at 4:22 and time winds down the web the first period here at Soldier Field with the score the Chicago Bears 10 the Minnesota Vikings nothing where the Bears the Vikings happen the 33-yard line of Chicago leading Cleveland 14a nothing st. Louis at a Houston seven the zip of the first period and look at this Detroit the Lions have a 10 nothing lead over Miami that's the first quarter game and Green Bay losing to Indianapolis 14 nothing first quarter and let's see what the Bears do with Tommy Cramer this time where they trying the flips in about five times in a row he's back out of the shotgun [Applause] [Music] [Applause] Shaun Gayle maybe an interference penalty against Chicago [Applause] the ball was underthrown into the wind it didn't look like he was going to catch the ball but I I believe Gayle got his hands over his face there and kind of obstructed him it was he wouldn't not have caught the ball so it's a bad penalty for him to take pass interference number 23 first down because the Bears 27 yards and a scoring opportunity now for the bikes and the Bears had safety blitz is on Kramer he threw the ball up there's 23 covering on Jones 89 the ball was short he put his hand right across his face and kind of he knew he had done it he knew he had done it good call six online there's first of all Nelson gets close to the one-yard line good blocking out the right side by Swilley Tao and Irwin a right side of the Vikings offensive line and Nelson not a big guy but quick and likes to run inside at five nine 180 just hid himself among the big guy and the refrigerator is coming in not on offense but on defense this time along with Tyrone Keyes number 98 Bears goal line defense gets ready here on second and goal from the one yard line and nothing barely biking's on the doorstep who tied injury [Applause] [Music] Nelson and touchdown Nelson was hit behind the line but squirted in with his forward progress and the Vikings have put six points up on the scoreboard as we have just begun the second quarter let's take a look at it as the Vikings uh come across with a lead block or sometimes when you're that close you can have somebody knife through but this time they got some good blocking up front and Nelson just kind of scraped his way to got into the end zone with a little persistence and the Vikings are back in this football game and oh how important a penalty can be his first touchdown of the season Darrin Nelson who got 12 passes last week by the part of the Minnesota offense to the point after and he has it no mic games back in the football game and in that first period we keep talking about the time but get this the Bears with 933 against 527 in the first period but now they lead by only free refrigerator William Perry 72 let's watch him this time because the refrigerator torpedoes and gets buried by Brent Boyd and Dennis Swilley 72 right there he submarines and the Vikings say okay down you go and of course the run went off tackle and the refrig was no factory [Applause] [Music] five yard line and gets well upfield to about the thirty seven before he stopped by Carl leave so the Bears will have good field position after the Vikings had reduced the margin to three points going 46 yards in eight plays passing five times running for three and using up three 31 on the clock in that first quarter the Vikings head - one yard rushing and only 30 yards passing but now we have just a three point game the Bears will start from their 36 yard line stretch there [Music] [Applause] in the bow second man on push down incomplete ball was outside Galt looking inside when he adjusted couldn't get to the ball Carl Lee on the coverage and good coverage by Carly and that's an example of how good that catch was by McKinnon that time girls was under the same circumstance he had tourneys hit from the ball looked to the outside and he completely lost it so it shows you how good of a play MacKinnon came up with so it'll be second and 10 from the 31 yard line 36 year [Music] Thank You Haleh [Applause] Sooey as the first down [Applause] Chicago and Carly made the tackle number 39 they invested spot on the left corner for the Vikings and he does alternate there some up with best and the icebox was after him too Tim Newton as you see McMahon goes forward in the pocket he's looking down field for McKinnon then he's so good at spotting his secondary receivers and look at 96 here comes the icebox after Matsui and he just kind of more or less missed him but if he had got him it'd have been a pretty good blow right the icebox is a svelte 290 now 300 blush [Music] the system jokes Johnny Michael the refrigerator was getting his early-season publicity as a number one pick of the [Music] picks up about five on the right side driven out by Joey browner number 47 of the Vikings but I hope we can see that play again because you can see what a great runner Walter Payton is at a time because Dennis Johnson came across the line of scrimmage he's 52 is supposed to be a trap block watch 52 comes across there and jams up the trap and Payton played off it went outside of Dennis Johnson and ad-libbed his way for some yardage but it was Dennis Johnson with a heck of a play but Payton still was able to get some yardage on it Vikings still in the three grunts of agreement second blitz long format man reads McKinnon oldest loan incomplete good rush by the Vikings he'll had the coverage deep Studwell was among those leading the charge and then it'll leave a third down and erson and marjoram commend offensively for the Bears 86 and 82 the tight end Moorhead and the full-back Suey come out mike ditka with a clipboard and the sunglasses on this beautiful day in Chicago temperatures in the 50/50 warned to against the Vikings since becoming head coach has won 13 of his last 14 NFC Central Division games out the lard and elshire is for the white seeds out of the shot Irma can't stop password were in passed on McMahon Gaul had no chance to catch it and he wasn't it opened and McMahon really unhappy with himself on that one what had happened was Carly was on the coverage and this when Galt ran his pattern to the sidelines Lee slipped and then golf ad lived his pattern up the field because McQueen was kind of scrambling around get the pass there [Applause] that haircut why do so he hasn't had the hit America first for six months it's it is fourth down [Music] in Buford number 8 [Applause] down there Keith magenta Stover his head it'll be a touchback Dennis Jeffrey was down there and plenty of time to try and keep it out of the end zone the ball bounced in front of him it had popped up over his head so the Vikings will have it from their 20-yard line 1237 remaining first half bears can Minnesota Supreme a at home against the Bears and Minnesota at home against Detroit next we can all begin for the NFL today at 12:30 Eastern Time [Music] play-action fake can the pass up the Sun what a catch by leo Louis and Louis out of bounds with a first down in bears territory little Leo Louis makes it baffling catch and he caught it over the rookie quarterback Ken Taylor that's right the Vikings apparently went right after Taylor because Taylor's in for Mike Richardson who has a kind of a pulled hamstring and he has good coverage but this is a question of louis looking back to that ball leaping up he has great leaping ability and makes the grab key play for the Vikings of course Viking fans won't forget the catch he made last week and that was kind of like that reminiscent or was the winner in the end [Applause] [Music] first down Giselle MacLean [Applause] - the short man it's complete that Darren Nelson and Nelson gets up nobody in tackle him so he picks up another yard and Kim Taylor puts the hit on him there Mike Richardson the veteran and the regular on the corner left the game of the hamstring pull Ken Taylor a free agent from Oregon State ok you can see that he gives a little bit more room sometimes the defense will dictate that because you can see Duerson 22 going out there as the short man and this was an ad-lib pattern because of the fact that Kramer rolled out and they made a completion out of him so Ken Taylor on the spot Nelson got to within the length of the football from the first down yardage with that second effort and a little discussion on the field here about whether they're now going to ask for a measurement perhaps but what the delay is Cramer I think is suggesting that they'd like to have a look and they're going to bring the sticks out this is a great situation I love a second one you know you got a you got my play and it's a it's a really a good time to to try and surprise and we'll throw something to do they might not expect Cramer 6 of 9 for 76 yards in his last outing against the Bears he was 28 of 55 for 436 yards that's the night of course it McMahon and injured in all and threw three touchdown passes as the Bears won the game but a big night for Kramer he has been successful [Music] there's no special reason why play better against them but I understand what they do I like to throw against perplexes and I'm handsome lucky [Applause] as you look at but grant who has a 25-21 the Vikings are over the Bears over the years when the Bears have won the last four games nothing about framers ago he's a touchback you know you can intimidate quarterbacks he hit him a few times a moonlit design here who you are everybody reacts to the physical and he gets even more feisty ve2 gets hit a couple times quarterback's Peter Brock the Lambs quarterback [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] first down Minnesota Darren Nelson gets to the 40 yard line of the bears and he's hit by a Wilbur Marshall and he hung onto that ball did you see what Marshall 58 trying to pull the ball right out of his arms where's Darren Nelson and Nelson somewhat the victim in that game against the Rams he was the guy carrying the ball who didn't get into the end zone that might have given the Vikings of what two would have been a deserved victory that afternoon but the ball here in the short yardage situation [Applause] [Music] [Applause] they're all sacked out to the white side [Applause] good recovery by flamer flamer at ten most intercepted on [Applause] pencak broke up the play as the ball just popped out of the hands of Anthony Carter a heck of a play by Kramer under the circumstance watch 45 Gary defense he come up here and hit Carter as Carter goes up to the ball here comes the hit he just goes for the body and jolts at loosen there was almost an interception there by Dave Duerson but Kramer did one heck of a job Gary defense Iike Sports Illustrated said they had a poll of NFL players and he's the number one all the cheap shot artist mighty objective yeah he hits hard but he's not really a cheap shot [Music] [Applause] this is meltin [Laughter] [Applause] right there with a muscly Fraser number 21 there'll be a gain of about a half yard on the play and we'll leave the bikes with a third down okay this is you can see a little delay counter type of action as twenty fakes to the right Nelson goes back to the left Irwin throws one block but there's great pursuit by Richard dent ninety-five great speed for a defensive end who led the NFC in sacks last year so now what will they do [Applause] looks like crazy bull 8 [Applause] another high snap he gets lots of and his pass is over [Music] Lewis tried to bring it down again the ball tipped the Bears with somewhat of a chance for an intercept Leo Lewis just couldn't climb high enough pick 511 to call in that one so it is fourth down Minnesota and Greg Coleman comes onto the field the Vikings defense bears defense holds the Viking objects here on this drive with 1006 remaining in the first half [Applause] has not done well this year so far has kicked that many inside the 20 out-of-bounds he's been working on that for inside this morning [Music] we'll be down at the two yard line by Joey browner and so Coleman delivers the goods perfectly 38-yard punt drop at the two yard line [Applause] and our opportunity to remind you about our special next Saturday on CBS Sports quest for the crown the NBA's 40th season which promises to be one of the greatest in league history and even saw the debut of Patrick Ewing magic on a mission to make the Lakers the first team to repeat for the title in 17 years Larry Bird Michael Jordan Houston's twins towers of Samson Olajuwon lots of excitement of the NBA this year next Saturday at 2 o'clock Eastern Time catch our preview here on cbs4 okay the Vikings better watch out the Bears have taken a lot of chances there should've been a lot of trick things and unusual situations this is an unusual in here trick Williams and here is suey not too tricky but effective as he plows for about four yards over the five and we'll leave a second in about six with Joey browner and Chris Dolman the rookie from Pittsburgh making the tackle where there are some interesting scores around the NFL Buffalo leading Philadelphia 10 nothing second quarter st. Louis ten to three over Houston second quarter what do you see some of the others come in Indianapolis 17 to 7 over Green Bay how's your office pool coming along the adil seven to nothing over the Jets in the second quarter [Applause] [Music] the slotted motion tax [Music] Sooey Sooey pretty good hole gets to the 10 yard line but well short of the first down trying the left side behind covert abort cinmarc Mulaney with a good defensive reaction the veteran number 77 Tampa Bay looking for their first win leading New England 14 to 6 the Buccaneers reserved where they've lost seven games in a lot of tough ones in Detroit 17 to 7 over Miami that's the second quarter score we're down two yards to go there's at their 10-yard line [Applause] [Music] as the fur [Applause] interesting little foreign Sooey set up a little bit ahead of patient and he makes a good luck okay the key guy here on this kind of a play is the middle linebacker 55 stud well and you can see the block was jammed up on him and he gets a double block from Matsui comes along and hits him in Peyton came right through the hole and got a key first down because the Vikings really had Chicago bottled up on the two McNeill [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] will he go with cupboards badly at a Stefan Lee and the ball was there he may have been out of bounds had he held onto well it was a situation that a lot of times Tommy Cramer is in the Vikings came with the all-out blitz McMahon saw it so what do they do these days they just let the wide receiver takes off buff the field and you hope that he can beat through the cornerback wounds on coverage and Galt did have a step but leave made the most of it there as he put the hit on him as the ball came in and kind of stripped the ball a little bit loose as it is he was coming down the field so good play by Gary salvage to play there for Minnesota way to give us the suey [Applause] step well and pursuits done well took quite a shot Adam the up he's going to be Sooey dive that look like go is a pretty good right cross by Scotts Doug well but it looked like he actually missed it looked like he was trying to hit him in the head and he may have just skinned the top of his head yet he's going to get a penalty out of it so he I think he got him more for intent than the infraction I'm not sure maybe we'll get another look at it but anyway it's going to be a key penalty because it's going to give a first down he's your personal foul 155 first down steadwell he plays his game to intents on this plane he says I never touched him he could hear him say that all okay he plays off the block there by Jimbo covert now the Vikings had this play stop now here watch his right arm see he took a shot at him with thee with these right hand there but looked like we missed i betting sue IDO Bundoran yeah I think he drove under it so he was it was intent to harm like this yeah shut down about a big in the SWAT out against the Vikings [Applause] [Music] pass intended for marjoram incomplete good coverage downfield by Willie deal was with marjoram step for step no opportunity to get turned around and get at that ball I was throwing a little long so it is second in ten you know the Vikings are pretty pretty good pressure on McMahon he hasn't had all that much pressure this year the bear offensive line has done well I know they've added some blitzes but McMahons haven't but a bitmap pocket and throw hurry he's been effective first down passes throughout the season and way the ball to run he's the [Music] [Applause] [Music] key statistics upon the five to go sooie sooie on the draw and it's very well read by the Vikings it was ill Shire check it it was duck Martin number 79 six-year man from Washington made the ankle tackle and it'll be third down and nine as the Vikings bring in another defensive back they lose a lot of fight without a nickel six defensive back sometimes Isaac Holt among the bags in on this play the rookie phenom [Music] overthrown diving try by Dennis McKinnon but no real chance to get that Crowder and Turner had the coverage deep on beginning and so it is fourth down in the Vikings defense which has been a very steady if unspectacular force for the Vikings in their first seven games the defense has been doing a very steady job and they do it again on that series since 37 to play first half they're our ninth on total defense which when you think about last year pushing a lot of interest vast improvement for a lot of reasons but being one of them through the end zone for a touchback 55 yards for Morrie Buford with the wind 629 to go first half bears by 3 he's now flowing with the wind it's not always an advantage is it depends really on our wind's blowing that's right we got a fairly strong wind in one direction that music blow both ways doesn't know that as far as I know but him in the orchid to this I'm still waiting for the ice box and the refrigerator man to collide everybody this stadium is waiting for that too although the Vikings coaching staff hasn't acknowledged that the ice man is the man designated to take on the refrigerator but worked all the - tons of funk might meet each other if they can't read a snowless cow that's pretty alright let's see what happens here at the 20-yard line the Vikings will start first down 629 46 defense for the Bears Kramer trolling into the wind on first down and that's might've been intended all bounce in front of Anthony Carter but it was much closer to John Berman obviously a miscue between passer and receiver there we keep mentioning 46 defense of course it's named after former bear player Doug plank and the Vikings even use a version of the 46 defense and so does some other team so that because it's been so successful for the Bears and basically remove another linebacker over on the other side of the line you shift draw your line over and linebackers cover items man-for-man and all kinds of things out of on 20 they killed play action lots of time for training now on it's the path up completely Lewis what a catch by Leo Lewis and what a pass by Kramer growing out to his left side 14 yard gain in a first down here's what happens if you don't blitz him when you just put a straight four-man rush now they got some pressure on it but there aren't very many people around here so then Kramer gets out of it throws on the run and look at this pass considering the situation he was in and a good grab by Leo Lewis and Kramer can kill you that way so what will the Bears do the next time let's see what they do it's interesting it's it's like a game of chess Tommy Kramer [Music] I'm trying to it [Applause] or yard line immediately by Wilson's but a gain of about five yards and but grant told us yesterday that's the kind of pass they like to throw to their backs to get them downfield not to throw the swings due to the backs behind the line of scrimmage and make them cover more real estate he likes to have him get down four or five yards and that was perfectly executed their second and five big alfred anderson and Bud Grant whose guy who is really just kind of forgotten about the whole thing about it establishing the run his whole philosophy he's just get the ball too quickly to somebody and he said that's better than a run block because of so many things happen successfully to make the run go [Music] [Applause] that's just as good the sideline pizza Dewar's and intercept punch up back at the line of scrimmage Dennis Gober Marshall but meanwhile the first intercept of the game I'm not sure whether he overthrew number 20 Darren Nelson or whether it was just short to Leo Lewis but anyway Dave Duerson was right in the middle of it number 22 there worsens third interception of the season it's a kind word from Buddy Ryan on the sidelines and his teammates Miller Sentinel a quillber Marshall having to kind of prove himself to the fans because he is the replacement for holdout Todd Bell as Marshall is for Al Harris four are shown that they [Applause] what a good play and it's Chris Dolman the rookie from Pittsburgh who fought off the blocks and made the tackle and Payton getting up slowly after they hit by Goldman I think somebody else fell on top of him and he's favoring his left knee at the moment seven carries 44 yards for Walter Payton so far and a one-yard gain a man who just broke the bear scoring record he has to 630 career points so let's watch Dolman he's number 56 Boortz tries to throw the block on him he goes over the block and then makes the ankle tackle and brings down Walter Payton and kind of hard to tell where he [Applause] [Music] Hey but again good defensive reaction Joey browner coming up rauner has been around Peyton all day and that game is about maybe two yards we'll leave a third and seven terrific play by by browner I mean Peyton had a a good situation out there he had some a blocker and browner got through made the ankle tackle there dear man from USC was their first choice in 1983 had somewhat of a shaky rookie year first but grant doesn't play rookies a lot anyway with the new coach [Music] and the positions he was playing she shits [Applause] [Music] [Applause] for margarine and marjoram we'll eat eel with the interception deal and marjoram and Willie heel made a spectacular catch it was a flag pattern by Kenny marjoram number 82 and Jim McMahon threw it out there and watch watch steel larger made a real good job of trying to prevent the interception because the ball was thrown out way over more toward steel side and they fight for the ball they both have a Negro right right to it and margarine makes a super grab but teal hangs on to the ball and actually became the receiver and mantra became the defender a key play for the Vikings first down but deep in their own territory but they'll take it I'm sure Willie teals first interception of the season [Music] [Applause] - Kim Taylor Darrin Nelson's blurting ahead got a good block inside Steve McMichael made the tackle then a pickup of five maybe six on the play man we were talking about him being old four five of one stretch here in the second period in the first quarter he was seven of eight and a touchdown in the second period he is two of nine and an interception so the Vikings defense has turned things around 3:06 to play six [Applause] sideline incomplete he had all kinds of coverage there and to about a balanced delivery for an NFL update let's go to our studios in New York and Brent Musburger well Tim the Dallas Cowboys explode with the big play good blocking up front and watch Tony Dorsett he'll do the rest 60 yards for a touchdown and now the Cowboys have come back and they lead Atlanta 1410 back to Tim in Chicago all right Brent Dallas at five and two atop the NFC East going today [Music] we wide receivers in [Music] [Applause] and fashions for the first down yardage and he's got it GRE fencing put the hit on him but better the second effort by Nelson to get to the marker and so the Vikings advance and they disdained the past that time and figured the way the Bears have lined up defensively that they would just try and create a crease I just said crisscross block and a nice trap double trap Terry Taos threw a good block there as Darren Nelson got through it as a trap to the left side of the bear defensive line and that was a key play first down they maintained the ball how's the head heck of a play by the Vikings we really split the bears open that time [Applause] guys down we've got God and - Nelson Nelson will be close to the first down hoping short by about a yard been secreting to knock him out of bounds [Music] they also have been a busy guy on his first half why is Kramer so great something watch 22 Dave Duerson will come blitzing up the middle he comes to Scott clean he knows right away if Duerson comes that means a linebacker has to come over and cover the back out of the backfield and no chance for him and finally Gary fence it gets over to knock him out of bounds but it was really Singletary who had to get over and make up the difference there Dewar's in with a good reaction to prevent that from going a long way but it is first down Minnesota as we reach the two-minute warning here in the first half that Soldier Field the Chicago Bears 10 the Minnesota Vikings 7 their old 32 yard line Tommy Cramer 9 of 17 104 yards at the moment [Music] and seven first half the pass tipped an incomplete intended for Leo Louis somebody appeared to get a hand on that yes Lewis had inside position for the little quick post and a knock Kramer was real frustrated because they had another first down play on that one we may see that play again [Applause] the seat frame are looking over to the sidelines again to pick up the signal from Marc Trestman the assistant coach on the sidelines by Tom mcgamer he's a guy paid his dues isn't he some movies he's taken sure have [Music] very wise [Music] [Applause] we got this side steps up in the market hits Anderson is dropped immediately by Singletary maybe for five yards on the play it'll be third down at five it's amazing how camera moves around in the pocket that time that was a four-man rush they were really caving on him he just kind of he's not what you call a scrambler but he floats forward in the coupling sideways and and just kind of has a knack of finding the place so he can get the pass off a couple weeks ago going [Applause] those have got six tents eyes in the back of his head lifts up the metal for Jones overthrown incomplete intended for Mike Jones number 89 let's pray sure had the coverage and Mike Richardson has not returned to this game for the Bears in their secondary with his hamstring injury and so the rookie in Taylor continues in his quarterback spot but the Bears did the job defensively on that series Minnesota will punt with 112 remaining first half now coma is going to be kicking against about 10 or 15 mile an hour when I would guess pretty strong against him in his face [Music] [Applause] [Music] bounce [Applause] Vikings it comes down at about the 34 yard line where David Huffman covers his for Minnesota 29 yarder so Chicago with one old [Applause] [Music] and shortly in half the NFL today will have Hank strand in our street Musburger you'll get scores and highlights from around the league and a special welcome Peter block plumber Winnipeg Blue Bombers star the Canadian Football League LA is Canadian rocky now with the Rams and unbeaten football team with seven and OH later today they play the 49ers here on CBS inside handoff [Applause] we'll be close to the first down Tom there they are stayed on his feet and took a couple of guys out without leaving his feet and Peyton followed along in his wake 56 yards on eight carries at 7 yards 8 times 7 is 56 isn't it used to be that's a pretty good average [Applause] first down he just did get to the marker where's Mike Ditka there with the short sleeve sweater honors been dressing rather dapper this year is it I want to dress like a winner so far it's worked the 46-yard line on the shotgun forecast so we get to got from folks in the first half with 49 seconds to play first half they won't show up in the box score but Joey browner came up with another super play he had defend his way through a couple of offensive linemen there just to make that tackle second and about a half yard Connor has been a force in this entire first half in a very significant figure because [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] as the first down stops the clock at the 40-yard line 46 seconds remaining [Applause] Turner forced him out number 27 now as they graduate get in the field goal position remember that 15 mile an hour wind I mentioned would not be at the fairs back so they could attempt a fairly long field goal there now at the 40-yard line his dad has four handed as to his Detroit leading Miami four to 14 and there's how the Bears have been moving there pass attack around [Applause] [Music] for Gulf and Gulf gets out of bound Leon attack chipping away down field [Applause] okay and you can see that Lee is running with them dog turns in goes back outside and leery accident is basically this short past pattern now they're playing pretty darn tight and this kind of a situation that was a pretty tight basically they've been playing off quite a bit allowing the bears to go down five six yards a clip they just want to get beat for the touchdown and then hope for the best on the field will try probably [Applause] seven defensive back down 35 seconds on the clock so the Bears fall timeout Liam Nord made the tackle for the Vikings 35 seconds remaining first half and the ball is now at the Vikings 27 yard line man Jim McMahon will go to the sidelines to talk things over with Mike Ditka so far we've seen not much sign of his injury he's got a bad his Fannie's a little sore and he's got a sore ankle he said his Fanny was a lot sore when dick document practice I guess it's like a deep Bru mainly when he get knocked back on it he said actually it's when I pull out from Center and I make that little turning step for a handoff or a set up in the pocket he said I can that's what was his primary concern he seemed to write off the ankle he said that didn't really is not that big a deal although was very sore on Monday night I think they may have sent it in to place with Birdman of course he has capabilities and has done so much on his own out on the field of calling audibles and as Mike Ditka said he's making me look like a great coach with some of these check offs at the line of scrimmage the Vikings side of the field lacy there's 35 seconds the Bears have what one timeout left one timeout remaining 35 seconds on the clock rusty gone Ares wage jobs I wind up being in a few situation shortly Stephan Humphrey ports for the Bears number 75 first down the West gets the pass Aquos ooey-gooey has the [Applause] the similar talents that skip away from those are rushing linemen they complete the pads on the run just a straight four-man rush by the Vikings and they put pretty good pressure as they do a little crisscross and Markel a nice 77 was putting the pressure on there but macmaine went forward in a pocket ala Cramer and hit Suey who has quietly had a very fine season for the Chicago Bears and they're not using that much time on the clock still 28 seconds left man now 13 of 22 [Applause] they got to be thinking touchdown now not so much complained and it was over the head of Matsui it was flown deeper and it may have been a little mix-up on the part of the receivers in the quarterback on that play Willie Gault was also in the center of the heel down deep running a post pattern so those are the ones who you're not sure exactly who made the mistake 24 seconds man picks up the signal from the sideline [Applause] second [Applause] it off complete credits dropped immediately the ball-carrier dropped immediately Suey by Studwell third and five with the clock ticking so glad I get the pounds they do over the head of Willy Gulf five seconds remains and they will bring on Butler [Applause] as a 40-yarder already to his credit today the longest field goal he is kicked this season he's the leading scorer in the NFC I think believe scoring the entire National Football League so far this season Kevin buckler [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] he's got it with two seconds showing on the floor the Minnesota Vikings defense continues to play that better rock steady style that the Bears have not been able to solve the first touchdown the past and McKinnon back early in the first quarter on their first offensive series but two more field goals has given them the 13 to 7 identity [Applause] do you think the Bears would dare kick off to Busta Rhymes or do you think though take it short something [Music] they're kicking with the wind here so it made that coaching staff will decide they can get it into the end zone but there's Buster going over to talk to but grant to get his instructions the exciting rookie from Oklahoma he says you got to be crazy to love kickoff returns and he loves it so second is any second and then we have a one in two kickers kick returners at Minnesota Buster had six kickoff returns against the Bears rolling up 182 yards [Music] 50 fans you might expect unlike our mayor there crimes that the man and Butler didn't feel that he could get it into the end zone and through with this wind that ain't behind him and so Minnesota with two seconds we'll have that one pop from the 20-yard line well you know he let that ball bounce there in that end zone almost didn't get out of the end zone you have to be careful go back there and make sure it clears or it's a BOTS down for the other team so Tommy Kramer and Jim McMahon locked in the passing duel the fridge in the icebox have yet to confront each other that may still occur in the second half the fans sure want that scene here at Soldier Field but so far no conflict one day their way the one the way the Vikings are going to the line of scrimmage you got to believe we're just going to fall do so that'll do it for the first half here at Soldier Field and defensive struggle has Chicago with 13 in the Minnesota Vikings they worth noting again watch Michael Jordan off the fake come down the baseline Laimbeer slams him down the players exchanged words but show to the coaching [Applause] did anybody ever want a piece of Hank Stram during any coach I know I say lose save it and I had some good good times together we had a lot of fun but I needed a little soapbox give him the short yardage down I feel otherwise the Minnesota Vikings defense has done very well against the number one bear offense that's right and the Vikings defense has played very steadily all season long and they're all to a very good halftime adjustment team but grant kind of likes to come out and get the lay of land see what's happening out there and they usually adjust very well at the half what they really have to adjust for the second half however is their offensive scheme they got to get something going well they certainly do it's gonna be interesting to see what happens you know I was expecting to see you know we but Grant says we might not even see thee the icebox and refrigerator collide he says that's only a small part of the football game and he's been right so far that's that's the case at halftime so the Bears 13 Minnesota 7 will be back for the third quarter in a moment back in Soldier Field and the local hero this week anyway William Perry number 72 gets ready for the kickoff he's been working on the specials for several weeks since the today the Bears have a number of their alumni for the [Music] decade of the sixties that group watching the game today moves people like Gale Sayers Dick Butkus Mike Pyle it obradovich Ronnie Bowl this is Barneys [Applause] the fridge was there so was Sanders the rookie in Jim Morrissey a reserve linebacker number 51 the refrigerator doesn't get to play too much but he always seems to be a part of the action one way or another this time on the short kick they're kicking off shortly staying away from Busta Rhymes and their 72 that's Robert Smith trying to block on him he just kind of shits through him until he finds the one with the ball I guess I think he just knocked he just knocks fit back into the pile up got a strength coming at you in motion and he's on there now area left defensive the Vikings done their 30 yard line and motion is barter play action Kramer [Applause] [Music] just broke that up [Applause] for Steve Jordan the tight end and we see how things went in that first half 230 total yards for the Bears they had 14 first downs designed by the Vikings and the ball for about five more minutes but they leave by only six points McMahon was 14 of 25 141 yards a touchdown and an intercept Tommy Cramer 10 of 20 109 yards and he had one intercept and only 21 yards rushing for Minnesota the entire first half 56 yards off this time by Kramer's side liner can throw and complete the Lewis couldn't plate hold on a ball was outside will be inside then turn it around but not hold on to the ball you know coverage can Taylor again you know that was a great play to Louie Lewis that time because the wide receivers and all these situations are going straight up the field on the fly pattern this was a planned stop pattern because the Bears came on the Blitz off their 46 defense and this time Lewis was supposed to just stop and he did he stopped but the ball was short just a little bit behind him but that's a great pattern to run because these cornerback tradition history born with receivers up the field Mike Richardson who [Music] and second gone downfield for it is incomplete [Applause] pardon me sir is now fourth down a Vikings will half the punt Anthony Carter coming over from the USFL picked up in a deal with the Miami Dolphins he found his rights from a Michigan star Coleman in to punt stands at his 15 yard line and 25 that entire series only took 24 seconds to entry plays on it took 24 seconds throw throw throw Coleman whip the wind gets a good kick hailer takes quite a shot flags are down got over 35 47-yard punt and good 14 yard returns for the rookie Taylor Robert Smith the man to really put the smash on him and flags fell right at the point of contact and there was also a flag earlier too so we could have prepossession penalty and a post possession penalty we'll have to see what happens and maybe one on each team 3 Fred Wyatt sorts it out with his staff moving today Davis Jerry Bergman Joe Haines can't act Phil Quinn be and Chuck McCallum all our relatives at home have to hear them acknowledge and here's comes Wyatt with a call oh they both might have been against the Bears [Applause] it's got to be complicated they're all getting in on it these guys should be in New York at the UN meetings yeah look at the Vikings it's taken for this illegal block in the back facematch they'll refuse the illegal block in the back take the face map first Alex that was so that was so complicated that nobody got publicly announced is the department on the play but it is against Chicago and we want to remind you that most of you are going to be seeing our doubleheader action the San Francisco 49ers struggling at three and four against the unbeaten Rams in the California rivalry some of you will see the Giants against New Orleans in the Giants in the see Eastern the Saints not out of see West and we would mind remind you that Chicago viewers will not see either one of those games because the home game here in Chicago was on television that is according to an [Music] for the Vikings with Jim Newton first down Chicago starting from there 80 [Music] like to draw play to pink hey has the first down picks up about 14 yard we're outside that will be refused 13 yard gain for Phaeton Studwell at nor the signal is against the hi guys number 55 decline Purcell study well think it was said well I think there is somebody out there left are they defensive linemen [Applause] [Music] but he has to take the blame before millions of viewers rabia's families a [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] they're three four get it in motion play-action [Music] knockdown abound five rounder more head went right to the beat right to the bench that time both teams have been joined to their tight ends a lot more tight in Scott well I think 12 passes for Minnesota last week and the tight ends for the Chicago Bears caught a bunch of passes to Emery Moorehead you can see his career statistics has caught some key ones for the Bears of course malarkey caught a key one last week and Steve Jordan caught several passes for Minnesota against the Chargers [Applause] [Music] doing a little collision Studwell comes in and he's able to slow up suing with a one a second efforts prevented a loss on the play but the Vikings defensively reacted very well in the large stud well best teal all over they're actually a McMahon and soui collided you're going to watch 55 that is stud well I think he takes a little straight arm here so we show some old-style football here as stud well gets through the block and then sue Eve gives him that little straight arm and gets away and was able to scrape through for a couple three yards but I'll say one thing stud well was persistent wasn't he persistent he is the leading tackler on a Viking is 99 tackles found in solo an assist coming into this defensively for those budgets and everywhere our German at wide receiver the Claire [Applause] [Music] they first attempt lady to stop them and Payton returns what could have been a bottle [Music] that's a fourth down all right they did not get the first down so even though Mulaney didn't get him he forced Payton to cut back and there was some pursuit to prevent him from getting the first down as you can see Payton just goes out of the backfield and here comes Mulaney but he did force Payton to cut back and that takes time and allows the pursuit to come in from the inside and Payton could not get the first down so Minnesota gets the ball back Laurie Buford [Music] Nelson and the ball lands at the 30 and will be down by the bears 32 yard punt by Buford into the wind down by cliff Brook Dan we have 12 13 to play third period there's 13 to 7 in sunny afternoon breezy but certainly a lot warmer than normal for this time 13:07 but grant said yesterday [Applause] [Music] coaching decisions before balled out there Nelson dr. Elias Karen Nelson swarm Oh Perry number seven Richard in that's one [Applause] Berry is playing a little bit more for Mike hartenstein he's in there a little bit more in this game than he has been in previous games who got some scores quickly here as New England is taken the lead over Tampa Bay 1614 third quarter Indianapolis 27 to ten over the pathway so it looks like the factors been about three and five minutes to come up [Applause] [Music] [Applause] intended for jordan who didn't expected that soon and he was on the coverage by Duerson but can get elusive them and the ball was going over his head and he was claiming interference Dorson kind of screen him off like a basketball screen and he claimed interference but no call third down and 11 and we see detroit continuing to lead the Dolphins 24 to 14 Buffalo setting up [Applause] [Music] [Applause] just conformations of cleaner [Music] [Applause] the old bear blitz does it again as you can see Richard dent comes around and grabbed him by the arm as he throws the ball and deflects it and it bounces around and Otis Wilson number 55 picks it off there was almost a tackle from behind there by Anthony Carter and Wilson maintained his footing got into the end zone and the defense has put the Chicago Bears in good shape now 23 the cuts down [Music] [Applause] so suddenly the thing [Applause] [Music] Minnesota Kevin Buckner will kick it off Otis Wilson taking the interception the Bears have done that this season we are now at the halfway point [Applause] speed gets over the 25 to the 27 yard line but my short kick up into the wind Whiteman made the tackle let's take a look at how Richard dent watched the left ear screen you see number 76 he's the right tackle Tim Orr one for the Vikings and he'll push off to his right and dent goes way around to the outside him Berman doesn't have to block on dent all that much because he's usually coming from the other side and dent 95 batted the ball away and there was oldest Wilson with the interception brainerd out 10 of 20 [Applause] this hat first down task complete Jordan number 80 played at the 32 yard line Duerson and Singletary on the coverage made the stop gain of four yards it'll leave a second and six for the bikes all at their 31 yard line Tommy Cramer taking the call from the sidelines he's saying hurry it up give it to me as the coaches are trying to decide what they're going to send in and of course the clock continues to run Cramer now 11 of 26 he's had much better statistics before well he's had his best days at home [Music] [Applause] [Music] two here at Soldier Field Kent wasn't in the same side again he's dead real estate Lewis tripped up by fence X the ball comes loose but he was down by Wilbur Marshall at the 47 yard line of the Bears Leo Lewis becoming a big play man for the Vikings okay the Bears off the 46 defense now Kramer spots what's happening just goes with a quick post and give Lewis a good mark there for recognizing just takes off in front of Taylor almost breaks it it Wilber Marshall hadn't come from the backside number 58 right there and made sure of the tackle as Lewis was ready to break it there if he had maintained his footing so big play by Tommy Cramer and Lee Lewis the Vikings back in business [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] complete Lewis again Louis that gust turned around and the ball was there and fun offensive and that's really not almost not a side Leinart in because they're running off that fly pattern instead of going straight down the field it's a timing pass where he soon as he feels he's got the defensive back learn he stops because so many times you're running those fly patterns and that's what you call timing he hadn't even turned yet now he turns the ball was almost there that is precision passing Eli Prince almost like a we won't hook it men right excellent [Applause] [Music] well Chicago [Music] everything the long setback he's calling inaudible but Anderson he's got a hole and picks up about five which second effort by the big man from Baylor Bears leading 22 7 8:35 winding down in the third quarter Marshall and pensacon the tackle on that play it'll be second and a long four Alfred Anderson missed three games with the knee injury suffered in the first go-round against the Bears back on Sephora [Applause] San Diego primary the longest rushing today by the [ __ ] six yards the carry [Applause] to pass out to malarkey the tight end he has a first down at the 14 yard line what a great job by Kramer that time because debt was coming through slick and clean and he had to get it up and over dent and quickly now watch what Kramer s he does he is a fake he's got his back to the backside here comes dent right there and he just threw it right over him and dumped the ball off to malarkey and malarkey took the bike down finally knocked out of bounds this is a nice Drive by Minnesota Perry comes out of the defensive unit and Mike Hart is dying comes back in [Applause] berries in there 14 yard line of quickly Darrin Nelson Nelson to the five knocked out of bounds at the 4 yard line well I'll tell you he is taking advantage of the bear witness in the defense that time you saw Wilbur Marshall coming 58 from the outside as soon as he knew that milk Wilbur Marshall was coming he dumped the ball because he fooled that means coverage had to come from the inside to cover here comes Marshall 58 on the outside slick and clean Cramer spot Singh boom there goes we're going to take a look at it from a different angle as you'll see where Marshall comes from and Kramer he really recognizes in a hurry and just hit it out there to Nelson on the run and it was up to Singletary to cover from his middle linebacker spot it is the length of the book for a first down an extra blocker Anderson picks up the first down yardage and about maybe they'll spot the ball near the two yard line but it'll be first and goal for the Vikings well Alfred Henderson is that big man they could use they could have used him a few games ago when he was injured when the couple of games they lost on the one-yard line and of course with Ted Brown out you know he's even more valuable to have him in there Kramer was over five we commented just a few minutes ago at the beginning of this second half [Music] [Applause] first and goal choices in the game [Applause] [Music] and they stack up on rice Chris Martin then ground the two injured Vikings both in uniform but not expected to see action today Alan rice the second-year man from Baylor stacked up probably a gain of maybe a half yard at the most of anything second and goal but grant does not want any deja vu here they've had some problems on their short yardage [Applause] the use of somebody like Newton or Curtis loss as you'd have to think Nelson is back I think they got to go up and over because the Bears are submarine [Applause] that was my answer well usually the noise factor is much bigger up there in Minnesota yes there's an orientation Ruis yeah comes off the here comes off the lake inside the two yard line Paisley 22:7 641a [Applause] now the bear players are exhorting their fans to to please knock off the noise notice mike singletary he's number 50 he's back there ready to play and he's about 40 yards off the line of scrimmage and he's gonna head for wherever the back coming strength to take a good look at Mike Singletary now watch him he's ready always the ocean Jordans play-action pass Nelson coconut Marshall has the ball but the [Music] intercept them down Marshalls still running down [Applause] the roar of the crowd here Eli [Applause] about nine and Spike the ball he's just gonna discover any second now way back at their own whenever in doubt I guess you're supposed to run on that time but wrapped up came up with the pass out on the flat always dangerous when you're down on the goal line they had three shots to get to the touchdown and when you do it against the team like the Bears you never know here comes Nelson out in the flat and Wilbur Marcia with great instincts and reaction comes up he's actually doubly covered and Marshall makes the interception that since there was contact at the time they're ruling him down and I think the call is correct great interception his third of the season Marshall got a little exercise they had the ball at their own three yard line we'll be right back Imran and Johnny Morris where Wilber Marshall is just intercepted for the Bears and got it to the three yard line on the banks for the bike endangered Brent Boyd injured late inside Marshall Nelson [Music] [Applause] there from the endzone and that might have been chipped otherwise it was another one of those wounded ducks that he threw intended for the tight end of Whiteman we may have seen the key play of this football game when the Bud Grant maybe when you got two yards to going you've got three shots out of it I think you're not showing too much confidence in your running game kissing you ought to be able to get two yards everybody knows that the most dangerous pass is a flat pass out there down near the goal line like that because defenders don't have to worry about anybody getting deep on him that t-took he went for it and it did not work out Andy Frederick is in a tackle for Jim covert on the left side of the Bears [Applause] [Music] and Sidwell puts the stop on him but bacon gets out close to the seven yard line believe third and about five for the Bears 6:17 ticking down on the third quarter [Applause] Gilbert Marshall with his third interception of the season but grant was talking about how talented a young player he is and that he thought that really in their scheme of things a bear's defensive scheme that Marshall fits in probably better than al Harris who had a Pro Bowl year last year but as was [Music] [Applause] keep play here if they could stop the bearish affairs to be forced to pump in their nin zone and explore than a long five dancing his way we'll be close to the first down tripped up by Joey browner number 47 of the Reich gamers looks like he got it this effort [Music] he has spent a lot of time around painting today 11 carries 80 yards now for Walter Payton [Applause] well that time the Vikings blitzed and all the gaps and patron was still able to get through so 12 yards Monday night against Green Bay on 25 carries he's fourth in the conference at five [Music] [Applause] first out Chicago [Applause] takes it out of bound with Mark Mulaney in pursuit [Applause] [Music] [Applause] well somebody jumped offsides or they were pulled off sides in on that particular place yeah boom they were moving at the same time only in the Canadian League can you do that two men moving do they have before was that right there if two men can move can they in the up in Canada can they move yet to be sideways or today go move anywhere yeah they can move forward sideways backwards that's not football it is up there but grant used to coach up there I guess it is Washington leading Cleveland 14 to 7 that's what he settled into a defensive struggle and Detroit he continues to stay ahead of the Dolphins illegal ship 5 yards first down 14 to 7 Seattle over the Jets that's a pic game for both those teams are quite a struggle going on at both east and west of the AFC Miami and the Jets tied at 5 and 2 coming into the game in Seattle at 4 and 3 trying to catch up at Denver on the Raiders post down and 15 the ball is at the the Chicago Bears cuts inside way out over the 20-yard line we shorted the first down but another pretty piece in running water baked browner and golden on the tackle he follows his blocking so well here as you watch the interior lineman on that on the fake and you're going to see 63 jay Hilton Berg the center button drops out and pulls and now Peyton's going to play off the block by 63 hildenburg and then cut back to the inside he follows his blockers so well and finally host of Minnesota Vikings bringing down but now the Bears have a second three that first down they got a moment ago was a real backbreaker well VRD [Applause] [Music] stood well put the stop on him but it looks like he has the first down again [Applause] medical report on guard Brent Boyd of the waiking is a sprained ankle and will probably not 62 was out for last year Heydrich reserved the third choice of 1980 [Music] right when he's in at one of the first down [Music] [Applause] cackles and picks up close to ten yards paetynn starting to shred Lee Vikings defense weekend done a solid job in the first half we watch him bounce off the tackle here this is a kind of slips and then comes back behind the slip blocks and he'll it gives it a boost from Chris Bowman 56 you just boost right out of it and goes forward for a couple more yards now what we're seeing is what we thought maybe at the beginning of the game that the Bears would try and pound out some yardage and keep control the ball now they're controlling the wrong man he's over the 100 yard mark 104 on the day on 6075 that career second and a football sooie sooie with a big home stack the Vikings thrown back but he has the first down and then some for the 40-yard line of Chicago [Applause] Walter Payton gets more than 100 the time that he's been here it speaks for itself 44 victories 22 losses in at Soldier Field helps me even more 27 at 7 so the Bears can start thinking with 147 remaining [Music] do that with the Bears they'd be the first pair of it a penalty since 1934 in that season [Music] so we pulled down by Joey Brown are reacting well to the play and drops him for a loss but the flag is down Joey Bronner's had himself some football game today for the Vikings now we probably have a call against the Bears holding but they lost yardage on that play so we have to see if whether the Vikings will want to give them a repeat of a first down the way the Bears have been moving the ball they just might they might think about don't usually decline a 10-yard penalty but we'll see they might do it this time coating 58 and 65 decline playing down well that's that's what I do I because of the way the Bears are junk making chunks of yardage and might as well take it down away from them we are coming up next on CBS most of you will see those unbeaten Rams trying to join the Bears if the Bears get through the rest of this on top the Rams and the 49ers and a big rivalry and a obviously fit game for the Super Bowl champions the Giants at New Orleans with most his team still very much of contention in their respective divisions largest island Vikings on 2nd and 11th Oh Fitz the Peyton Peyton cuts inside one block and picks up about five or six yards where rufus best is finally able to get him down over 21 stud well in on it as usual steadwell gets in on nearly every 99 tackle so going into this football game he was in on 99 that's it's a lot of action third down and a long four for Chicago the ball now out at their 46 yard line as in the final seconds of the third quarter here at Soldier Field Gulf comes out to the left [Applause] [Music] it's playing this drive for the Bears [Music] Oh ma'am it doesn't Payton met behind the line by Mark Mulaney Colorado State hello Walter stop them through a loss of about a yard and he helped him up nicely too so that's the end of the third quarter at Soldier Field with the score the Bears 20 the Vikings seven the fans introduced to some bear fans does that Big Bear buttons on but they're definitely outfitted private and Viking stalwart I'd say they're surrounded - well that's a nice warm day down there on the Sun [Applause] [Music] rolls into the end zone John Yale trying to keep it up unable to do so 55 yard punt yeah the Vikings will start from their own 20 yeah looking at the stats in the through the third quarter can see the Bears have now got 18 first downs to 13 by the Vikings and nearly 300 yards of offense those three turnovers costly of course in the worst of them being the interception by Wilson taken in for a score and then the next one with an in scoring position having a picked off by Marshall [Music] good field position but those two interceptions stopping on any gotten started creamer four down in Milton and forced out by Duerson at the 24 yard line that will be second m6 we are just underway in the fourth quarter at Soldier Field Tim Ryan with Johnny Morris we should point out that now he excuse me the Vikings are throwing against the wind so that could affect longer passes the bikes don't throw that many long passes but it's a pretty stiff wind bears have got the refrigerator in the lineup again with Michael moving outside of the left defensive end over there 46 defense second and six [Applause] Otis Wilson straight through the second set of the dates of the Bears nobody touched them and it's back at the 15-yard line Wilson will come from the right side of your of your picture and he comes inside Tim urlan 76 free and clear and the only person that could pick him up would be the back and that was Darrin Nelson he got caught up in the middle of the of the offensive backfield no chance and that's the 46 defense for those linebackers to up mobile at one side of the line now they're going into the 46 again over on this side of the line he could see 58 and 55 fifteen [Applause] [Music] number 72 William [Applause] Wilson and I think that comes from a little action after the tackle I think it was Tim Irwin and Wilbur Marcia who got into it personal foul penalty signaled against the Bears Fred Wyatt will detail it for us shortly so the sack yardage may be reversed there is one penalty against the Bears unsportsmanlike number 95 15 first down that's Richard dent [Applause] that occurred after the sack had been made and so their good work by his teammates negated by the penalty well he hasn't been in a good mood since he hasn't got a new contract yet he's he's wanted to get his contract renegotiated and extended and that hasn't come about yet and he's made references throughout throughout the season he had seven sacks coming into this game but he's been rather ferocious and that's a big payday because put some Minnesota and must better feel the position we might say Richard dent seventeen and a half last year in yards fourth down that penalty used to be automatic first time well there's still some confusion about it they first said it would be first fourth down the plate but at first they said it was going to be first down the first announcement now they're saying third though then they said fourth and now they're saying third because it occurred after the play was over we haven't tried second but third down remains in other words it was third down and because it occurred after the sack had been made the play was effectively over the unsportsmanlike conduct occurred so the yardage is marked off but the down remains the same what has happened as it might get this team and the defense especially they blitz according to a weakness in the offensive line and they say they've according to the offensive scheme of block and they have in the Minnesota offensive schema blocking 46 defense [Music] got another [Applause] another flag down several bears landed on creamer just after we got the ball off and creamer now trying to get out Richard dent came after him again I think Kramer may have felt that the ball was gone and that he was not a [Music] down on the plane he says get him out I think he's saying get Richard out because Richard in out because he is he feels a dentist we have a delay against the offense her down nikka furious at Din and has taken him out of the game he just said third down again well I said 3rd down last time there was a penalty on no play [Applause] [Music] in other words the play was a no play [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] well what's asking bikini by the door this time Klinger get some time gets the pass got the pass to Anthony Carter complete with less Frazier on the coverage for the Bears but yet another flag down so this game degenerating into a flurry of penalties and I don't think her flag I don't think Carter got the first down he was coming back now they call it against Minnesota a holding call signal against the Vikings and it did appear that he was short of the yardage you're right that'll be moot now take it or not they are assuming that the Vikings would have to punt but maybe number 68 they're down they're gonna take the pen Allah put the Vikings deeper back in and really put the rush probably on Kramer again they needed about a half yard [Applause] 13:59 still to play in regulation time believe Tyrone keys yes yes by Harden Stein's in there which is precision they're in the 46 once again here they come get rid of the football don't you [Applause] and so the Bears defense a little easy astok way the gay force the Vikings of time Coleman will stand in his endzone their defense has been awesome the Vikings just can't handled the past [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] good kick by Coleman into the window dandy driving MacKinnon back with a 35 [Applause] into the 48 gilli at all a 53-yard punt by Coleman but a 17-yard return when we turn to Soldier Field after this word from your local station like RadioShack the computer experts [Music] [Applause] the Chicago Bears picked up yet another first down to Tim right now like right Minh an 11-yard gain as the Bears started from the Minnesota 48 following MacKinnon's punt return it was simply a McMahon that with the fake of the handoff to Peyton and then it down and out by Tim reitman number 80 who has a high percentage of receptions for the amount of passes in a thrown to him rookie from UCLA drafted by the Bears back in 1982 rolling mistakes for us and we'll start running out for left side gets a walk from pavement slides over the 13 to 29 a gain of eight yards on the play for Jim McMahon Mullaney had him in his sights somehow McMahon like Tommy Cramer with eyes in the back of his head got away where he said if you hit it right on the head they had him dead to rights and he has that great instinct and he just ducked under it and wound up getting some yards Richard dent to us literally hollered off the field by head coach Mike Ditka's now standing over there hoping to get some solace from his defensive coach Buddy Ryan he wasn't getting much so they made two really good defensive plays and then messed them up by taking second and two Payton and the Vikings stack it up Newton is there the icebox number 96 am Robert Smith number 74 the Grambling rookie getting some defensive time I can see it coming right now the refrigerator man is going to be in there on offense before too long well if that one is at first down we won't see him here let's check the scores meanwhile Buffalo and Philadelphia now look at this the Eagles have come back there within three in the fourth period meanwhile they're measuring Seattle leading the Jets 14 to 10 and Jets got themselves into that one in the fourth quarter a little short dress for [Applause] Android continues to at home mower on a fair sideline we see Denver with Kansas City 3210 trying to get the attention of the offense I don't where they've got the play in there that they want well McMahon's not sure he's come back out of the huddle looking another signal he wants to make sure he's got it right about two inches to go [Applause] 12:50 fourth-quarter there's a [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] kaitlin steps inside a tackler a good shot [Music] the first down to the 20-yard line frustrating that must be for chat first we'll see what that great running back to new fairsley makes a good defensive Blake gets himself in position to drop the guy for a loss and stop the first down and Bank take the file and the key was that once he got the position and forced Peyton inside there was no pursuit from the inside so you have to give some credit to the interior blockers of the Bears doing their seal blocking so there's no pursuit from the outside he was all by himself one-on-one against Peyton that's a tall first down 22 why not go [Applause] the foot drop for the and prouder hits him immediately there'll be a gain of maybe two yards at the most Joey Bronner has been outstanding today for the Minnesota Vikings from the safety spot well he really has I think it's cuz he's found he got a spot not the hole he's is it he's the safety the strong safety end he knows where he's gonna be he's adapted to the position he plays he's just played a super game really six to 205 pounds of he's just an ideal size because he's also got very good speed so he can be punishing against the running cover on the past [Applause] paetynn man he has dropped this time left got maybe to the large to the line of scrimmage and it was duck Martin number 79 wrapping him up 19 carries for a hundred and eighteen yards on the day the Vikings have brushed the ball only 13 times nine yards there's the differential right there [Applause] and all the Bears were number one against the run in the National Football League going into this game so it figured that the Vikings who have not been a prominent rushing team anyway weren't going to get a lot of yards rushing and I think but Grant knew that going in and his game plan was to throw the ball three wide receivers on third down and eight there will eagle in motion off the halfback spot [Applause] 20 yards for the score Johnny 2 wide receivers made that [Applause] yes and who saw Willie Gault was running all over the place they're out of his motion 83 back one way and then and then he waits as McMahon goes back and this flips it just almost didn't get the pass off looks like there but they haven't suckered in now here comes Peyton for makes a super grab gets the block there from hildenburg and then downfield was Brad Anderson throwing the final block but that was an easy one one skate within five Raj [Music] away so at 9:36 to play in regulation time [Applause] Wacka fear that following our doubleheader action today you'll have this lineup tonight on CBS 60 minutes followed by Murder She Wrote crazy like a fox and Trapper John MD our outstanding lineup of Sunday night entertainment and of course we've got more football action to follow around the nation the Rams and the 49ers multi we will be watching and the Giants and the New Orleans Saints going into some of the cities around the country each touchdown of the season for the wondrous one [Applause] the butler's kickoff [Applause] we're going up moving inside bear territory tackled from behind by Dennis Gentry some guys have the neck Buster Ryan has it a 49-yard kickoff return great running by Busta Rhymes a kick didn't get into the end zone because they just didn't get the foot on it and Rimes goes up to the right and gypsy does a good job where Brian's would have been gone good blocking by the four horsemen eyes he cuts back here he has to lose a little bit of his speed and that's what enables Gentry to make the tackle from behind otherwise Busta Rhymes would have begun he was just starting to turn it on here and here comes Gentry from behind to make the block Minnesota Vikings have a picture now Wade Wilson has come in at quarterback Tommy's trainer [Applause] [Music] [Applause] by Wilson to pick that up flags are down but on the first play as often happens quarterback comes in as and had action false start [Applause] 58 all-star his charge against Curtis rouse meanwhile Wade Wilson making his first appearance Kramer's taken every a snap in the regular season for the Vikings [Music] mon-star charge against rocks first in 15 [Applause] singleterry Air Marshal Singletary Singletary boy they're like players possessed now I mean the Vikings beat Harvey slow down the bear pass rush now they're just trying to slow him down it's not a great spot for Wade Wilson have to come in into this football game the police's gave the chance to play Tommy Kramer did not better days now he finished up 16 for 33 176 yards green receptions magic worked against the bear first various people where they come [Applause] the way took a big shot from in the past incomplete downfield the Bears came off the 46 and said everything but the kitchen sink only three down the field and here's what at the combat you saw all was dark blue jerseys coming out in between they're squeezed him he went so [Music] what he wants to play with [Applause] situation for him Texas State [Music] [Applause] the guy [Applause] there met at the 40 by gary pencak when another flag is down on the play [Applause] on the far side of the field down and protein number 95 that is Richard dent and approachment where he's always a part of the action one way or another isn't he well he's certainly eager to get at that quarterback he's very quick for a big man and they give him the outside rush position most of the time so many times he runs around the offensive tackle he has such quick feet which makes it very difficult and every once awhile he that will spin move and come inside but the key encroach hurt be fair we're down the key is if the Bears are loading up their people so if they're coming in heavy on one side the line of scrimmage early and the Vikings aren't able to adjust their blocking and sometimes they aren't necessarily more rushers than there are blockers but there's more on one side and somebody can't get over to compensate and there's the combination Mike Ditka and Buddy Ryan they're on the sidelines both have to be happy and it's just exactly the opposite side with red [Applause] [Music] [Applause] and Wilson from the shotgun [Applause] by Jordan made a fine catch as it looks like linebacker Wilson had a hand on the ball and nearly knocked it away from Georgia but evidently had got through and Jordan good concentration round with a catch this time you see only three rushers and the watch all the linebackers drop back and they come to the side of the field and it was almost intercepted there nice graph I Jordan is there he almost dropped the ball hung on to it but he had a few more yards to get the first down so the Vikings are in a punting situation Jordan now has four receptions for 26 yards Goosen is now [Music] [Applause] [Music] Coleman angling for the corner and Duerson will let it go and the ball comes down at the five and Viking bounce [Music] [Applause] apparently had his foot on the goal line [Applause] [Music] looked like he was standing outside the endzone from our ankle regulation time pairs 27 to 7 Chicago Bears steamrolled their bitter rival the rematch is set for Green Bay next Sunday on CBS Sports [Applause] [Music] and verified that indeed he was standing outside the end zone Paul woods fight and it will be first down at the two yard line you can see the official coming into the play and he ruled touch back as though browner ahead was not the case and he has been overruled Steve fuller has now come in a quarterback McMahon to the sidelines 31 181 yards two touchdowns one interception not a bad day he has only seven interceptions on the season in seven games plus he got out of the game healthy yes there's waving to you Tim yeah I guess I think that's more likely that some friends spin don't forget we've got more football coming up here on CBS today our doubleheader action will feature the Super Bowl champion 49ers who have been struggling against the unbeaten Rams going now it would appear to tie the Bears of top the unbeaten ranks just the two teams remaining in that category Giants at New Orleans we'll be seeing some parts of the country that's a key matchup between the NFC so it is first down steam for [Applause] then his Tiffany's in Sanders is in rookie Thomas Sanders will remember 20 damage [Music] [Applause] Sanders picks up maybe two out to the 4 yard line the rookie from Texas and end their second choice who had a very impressive preseason lady the tackle and Dennis folks now in at linebacker number 50 Vikings the Vikings have made several changes also David Howard is uh in their eyes occult is in their [Applause] on the corner as today in there [Music] [Applause] jump in there is an alternative go Buller passing from the end zone side liners incomplete did he catch it inbounds do not have possession in bounds and it is ruled incomplete and who was right there Joey browner another good coverage by Joey well we mentioned earlier the Bears in the Rams if they both are winners today would be the first teams first pair since 1934 that year the Bears of the Lions each one 10 consecutive games the Bears finished the season at 13 you know went on to the title game against the Giants and loss and this is a victory today will give them their best start since 1942 in 111 I know that season [Applause] [Music] this great near this great start they have the indices of their for [Applause] [Music] LCR number 73 in the end zone Boehner started to roll the losses putting a little bit hellshire was there to pounce on it it's almost like his knee gave out I'm here just he can watch his foot there he just you can give a little credit there to number two else your Archer to Caza alright 7:45 there's 27 Minnesota nine that his own 15-yard line three bears stack them up at about 223 Darrin beautiful sweet kick made the tackle along with the Vikings we'll start from there 23 with 733 to go and I just had a rule with Xavier metal ski champion Billy Kidd insults of the commentator on CBS coverage of World Cup ski events nor was he going to be skiing here on in November sure power the trip back to see man anybody goes skiing in Chicago it's got to be off home oh hell yeah I'm a fairly he said he's gonna build a ramp of some guy that'll be worth seeing Wade Wilson continues at quarterback and the Bears are leaving their big guns in on defense first down Minnesota [Applause] the nettle good job - hold on Steve Jordan makes the catch against tight coverage from fences and doers boy Jordan took a Popkin Gary pencak and jumped right up like a top and that's what a player like like Steve likes to do didn't want anybody to know they heard enough 45s the top your screen there's fancy Jordan will come across and here comes fencing taking aim 45 and down he goes and Jordan jumped right up and says I'm ready for the next play forget that [Music] [Applause] - Alfred Anderson he has the down and gets out to the 44 yard line where death made the tackle on him then ranging back in that unusual circumstance where the defensive end is is involved out there in the past covered all part of Buddy Ryan scheme of the things to keep the offense confused what's 95 doing out there the flag of the Vikings rushing game non-existent today as that statistic [Applause] Miles's won more games this year last year [Music] pass intercepted by crazy you know by a tailor pardon me made the tackle on abut the rookie his first interception he's the injury to Richardson number 71 the plans for found a holding against the Vikings decline naturally by the bear and this communication is waived through it right - to a tailor who didn't even move didn't go for the coverage you saw the past there he says okay I'll take it nobody else wants it goes up the field and give the Carter some credit he came back and made the tackle but there was a miscommunication between Carter and Wade Wilson on that and let's correct that interception staff because it is Taylor's second that he's holding on to that ball [Music] today [Applause] behind Chicago forgives it the Sanders takes a hard shot on the corner holds onto the ball as it squirted loose and it had come loose before the whistle sounded but the Vikings didn't see it there and he was able to get it back again before the width before the whistle blew good play by Isaac Colt on that he played off the block and made the tackle as you look at Washington still leading Cleveland oh that's a final now the Redskins over Cleveland 14 to 7 that's an upset Denver beat Kansas City 30 to 10 and look what Green Bay look at the Packers it's Indianapolis 30 to 10 in the fourth quarter so the Packers are going to go three and five on our basically out of it as far as any chance for division title Washington gets even at four and for that crowd [Music] [Applause] [Music] Dennis Gentry and another good defensive play by the Vikings right at the line of scrimmage Kris Dolman the rookie from Pittsburgh talking to Scott Studwell about him yesterday getting his opinion as a veteran of the youngster working on his left and he said boy he's he's just got all the physical attributes six-five 250 the number one choice he said he's just playing a little tentatively as you might expect of his rookie season and getting to play there with the injury the starter learning on the job on-the-job training which doesn't normally like to have his workers do but they think this guy is going to be [Music] [Applause] and it blow up the sideline [Music] brookie [Applause] [Music] they first down at the 16-yard line who was number 81 is their third choice in this year's draft and that is his first reception of the year yes and it was a straight old flight pattern because the Vikings put the Blitz on and he threw it up and maintenance as so often happens he spotted the ball first and made a nice grab in it and shock that up as number one and we talked about the Blitz it was a good blitz but it didn't get there quite in time folks with a really shot on Steve fuller but he got the pass away and the Bears are threatening once again 34 yard games the ball at the six [Music] [Applause] the bullet takes place John and that get on him through the pass off and it was Howard number 99 the rookie linebacker from Cal State Long Beach don't we have somebody around here I went to school at Cal State Long Beach not me for University of California Santa Barbara Santa Barbara Long Beach San Louis miss both are all together there to stud it up and down the coast I think it was LCR really gave it to fuller again coming from the back side for did sense it's coming and took the hit was that where David Howard I'm sorry I thought it was Hillshire second down lay Sanders just didn't get the handle on the ball on the handoff from fuller and it may be biking ball and yes it is Minnesota recovers the fumble and the Bears are stopped at the 17 yard line on the waiking and it looks like it's number 52 Dennis Johnson who came up for the loose ball [Applause] so the Vikings with 414 have some time to try to get it upfield and remember at the end of this game we'll be going to our doubleheader action and you'll see there the 49ers on the Rams most of you will the battle for California the Rams trying to stay even with the Bears when the Giants will be in New Orleans next week our action begins with the NFL today the Chicago Bears would be at Green Bay the Vikings will be at home against Detroit and other games Philadelphia at San Francisco the Buccaneers in New York against the Giants yes it is swarmed under insects that hosted a Hartnell sign and coolies on the sack mic Hartenstein number 73 on this sack and Wade Wilson is now known what happened with Tommy Cramer the Bears come with the all-out blitz against 73 Hart and shine gets two on the inside and puts the clamps on and we're getting how many sacks do they have we're gonna start that's four sacks four sacks on a whole bunch of hurries Vikings have market the offensive line he's going to taste of the bear is rough Henderson nowhere to go Wilbur Marshall put the tackle on him so sores as we wind down here getting ready to join the doubleheader action a final score the Lions beat Miami 31 21 so the Lions are going to be 5 and 3 and will be the Bears closest pursuer the Bears will be portent of 8 and Oh look at this code up here rallied to beat Buffalo 21 to 17 and Wow Indianapolis toured once again 37 10 things for force dragon company Wilson's on the end zone and it's complete good job for a first down after the 28 yard line Anthony Carter yeah the Vikings come out from the shadow of the goalpost and get it to the 29 yard line a 20-yard gainer from Wilson who Anthony Carter Prince sick and Ken Taylor on the tackle this telecast presented by authority of the National Football League attended for the private use of our audience and a rebroadcast or the use of the telecast without the express written consent of the Chicago mayor's in the National Football League is prohibited well you know but grant is not used to taking the defeats like this one this is ends up being a pretty lopsided game with the Bears Ethan's dominating as the game progressed [Applause] going deep and just overthrows Anthony Carter down the right sideline Carter was behind Kim Taylor but the pass a little overthrown Wilson showing the strength of his arm that was about 58 60 yards in the air anyway to continue my comments about but brantas we saw this 46 defense they used it a little bit as the Vikings use it a little bit and he saw that his team could not handle long strategically they weren't getting beat so much muscling yes they were getting beat up by muscle too but they were getting tricked there in that offensive line and it's not very often that that a but grant team claimed Hannah's something as far as their the strategy of the game is concerned so I'm see them in available [Music] 22 so nice to have obviously lots of time for them to get back the second half their defense did it all that's alfred anderson unable to hold on to wilson's pass it was there but it's in complaint let's go to brent musburger at our studios in New York for an update well Tim and Johnny perhaps the Detroit Lions are for real after all they hosted no make it roasted the Miami Dolphins today in the silver dome three touchdown passes by Eric Hipple that one's a leonard thompson they win it by 10 points back to Jimmy John's like that leonard thompson glad to see him get a important score in that game he's been a tough veteran for a long time for the Lions killer a big play receiver third down third and 10 come listen get some time up the middle nice catch by Jones pencak cut him out from underneath and Jones held on a high catch by passionate I catch do for that mattify Mike Jones 511 hundred and seventy five pounder went up four we've reached the two-minute warning or the Bears on top twenty seven denied and Johnny Morris back in soldiers heels weren't bad enough for the Vikings who liked them [Applause] while they're Payton and Jim McMahon getting a rest on the sidelines for the conclusion of this game finished eighteen of 31 181 yards two touchdowns and an interception along with his boos but Priscilla ankle they had that night Rush's 118 yards for another 30 wolfson growing deep contended for that just missed just off the fingertips of Mike Jones Wilson again showing downfield he's got a little gun 6:3 210 pounder second and ten Wilson five whole eleven now for fifty yards and wonders that's tough duty as you said Jonny what a guy comes in in the game is so really over and the defense is teeing off and your offensive line has been out there a long time to be beat up and they're little discouraged moe tired [Music] maybe you can solve it a toaster have be good for them little protection there in the past just off the mark intended for the running back alfred anderson number 46 [Applause] well we have a long day of football for you and the people responsible for our coverage executive producer Terry O'Neill a senior producer Charles H Milton the third and our producer at the site today David Michael's our director Peter Buckner and our associate producer Alan brown field technical manager Doug fleadom in the truck our broadcast associate bill Bonnell technical director Bob Chesney and his outstanding crew thanks for the audio Mike [Applause] interception started to lateral the ball tried twice unfortunately for him I think he'll we wanted to lateral the Me's there did somebody and that's his second pick and second interception suffered by Wade Wilson and Wilbur Marshall and certainly deal hey this is my job el Harrison's a nice guy and they'd be coming back to Mike to see him but I'm I've got this position he has exploded onto the scene and will be joining short the 49ers and against New Orleans accepted the Chicago area who folks will not get to see any more football on CBS this afternoon 136 to play first down Dean fuller brings the Bears out at the Minnesota 45 yard line Dennis Gentry get begins a good block shakes a tackle dances down the sideline and goes out at the fruity all like you fifteen yard pickup by Dennis Gentry the four-year man from Baylor good running by Dennis Gentry who doesn't get to play all that much and of course the Minister of Defense has had a little bit of a letdown now I mean the defense actually did not play a bad football game Tim the offense got him into trouble on a couple of things and it makes the school look a little bit worse than that the Minnesota Vikings even says played pretty good football yes they haven't and that's the been certainly a big part of the reason otters won four games already the first half of the season gently sighs it's a block from Sanders and and gets to the 20-yard line chased out by brown [Applause] not tonight and what do you know you look for bright spots individually out there but he has been a stick out defensively well if you go back and just think about this football game when you think of a deflected pass that Otis Wilson took in man number 47 five-yard you know the offenses responsibility that when you think when they were down there ready to score they had that key interception and I know that there's some yards at the Minnesota's giving up but they've given up yards throughout the year but they've bent and you know haven't broken too much so I just don't think it's all that bad for the Viking defense we're going to this game most of you will be seeing and the 49ers have taken the lead over the Los Angeles way the Superdog there - fenders wait a head for about five eight yard line [Applause] [Music] the Lord and John Turner made the tackle [Applause] it'll be second down five to the first guy the fans just reacted to the RAM 49er score because they know that the Bears would be the only unbeaten team as you look at William Perry the refrigerator will he get in this game but Grant says we might not even see him as right about that it's possible unless the Bears get down to the one that might fit to send him in there with the Viking sync for Evan gently inside the five about the three you may have pushed down on the artist 23 seconds left on [Music] the clock is running in seconds yep we're gonna let's countdown so the Chicago Bears go to a 1000 whether 27 and I most my nights alone before
