spacex has been providing some updates to the starling internet service i've been a happy customer of starlink since february of this year and i've got a lot of updates basically to cover so i'm diving into them in today's video good internet for everybody on the planet and still yeah screw comcast let's begin this is far more interesting to me than any 5g i used a lot of 5g on my trip and i have come to the conclusion uses too much battery and it's not that fast so start link is far more interesting to me because it's more about providing adequate internet service to those who are in desperate need of it which is basically you know billions of people that still don't really have access to adequate internet speeds and starlink has been in beta for a long time ever since like late 2020 now they're officially dropping the beta terminology which means that if i see any frame drops during my live streams i do have the right to complain now because we're no longer in beta okay this is now just an official service the good news is the dropouts have been fairly far in few between the connection has gotten more stable so stable in fact that after having several live streams with absolutely no frame drops i decided to up the bit rate to a tad higher for my broadcasts just to kind of test the limits of what i can get away with in terms of higher quality streams it's not yet perfect but i just want to remind people that comcast isn't either and back when i was on xfinity i did have occasional dropouts and frame drops so it's not like because this is out of beta that means the frame drops should be zero every single time i mean that would be nice but even with traditional landline internet that was not the case also they've updated the website now to suggest that people buying starlink and taking delivery should expect speeds between 100 and 200 megabits per second which i'm glad starlink is still doing the kind of under promise over deliver tactic because everyone i know with starlink is now consistently getting over 200 megabits down regularly before you know it would kind of depend on how good the signal was from the satellite right over dishy mcflatface it was like on a good day i could get around 250 down but then sometimes it wouldn't quite cross the 200 mark now every time i check it even when i'm not on ethernet and i'm just you know connected over wi-fi with my macbook pro i'm consistently getting over 250 down i've seen several people clocking over 300 down regularly upload speeds are also getting more consistent as well usually between 20 or 30 megabits up but of course on occasion you can see it hit 40 or 50. that's when it starts performing better than comcast which i'm super thankful for so basically uploading my videos over starlink does not feel any different from uploading them on comcast but it's overall cheaper which i like and thanks to some filings from the fcc we have heard that long term they actually plan to exceed gigabit speeds at each location which is pretty interesting for the longest time we were just kind of hearing them say that you know once the satellite service is up and running we're probably gonna get everybody around one gigabit per second which is cool if you consider all you need is the new and improved dishy mcflatface terminal which we'll talk about more later and a view of the sky like elon saying by mid next year you'll be able to point this thing up in the middle of the ocean and just have adequate internet service to live stream from new face time calls from and even competitive gaming thanks to these next generation satellites which spacex has already started deploying that use lasers to communicate with each other therefore they can bypass basically all of the lines that have to be run across the globe to access different servers and you can transfer that data in a vacuum faster than you can through undersea cable which means within the next seven to ten years we're basically gonna see gigabit levels of performance available to everyone who can see the sky which is pretty dang cool in fact in the fcc filing they said that they expect to one day hit 10 gigabits per second and given within the past year i've already seen the speeds and stability improve a lot i'm kind of inclined to believe them you know once they get starship operational which they are prototyping and testing rigorously right now check out nasa space flight if you want to see starship development that's supposed to deploy hundreds of satellites at a time and all these satellites will be capable of communicating with each other so that certainly gets me excited but of course one of the limiting factors as to why starling cannot deploy fast enough right now and if you go on their website and actually check to see like how far away estimated delivery is for your area it's usually pretty postponed but spacex like everybody else is saying the chip shortage has a lot to do with this although while a lot of tech companies i think use the chip shortage as an excuse for weak demand i don't think that's the case with starlink because i still know in my personal life countless people that have put in their deposits and are waiting for delivery and they've been waiting for delivery for months they're bugging elon about it on twitter all the time and there's clearly a lot of customers that are waiting on their orders so i don't buy into this oh they can't get enough people buying them thing because if that was the case they'd probably want to lower the price which that's sadly something that is not updated in today's video it's still 500 for all of the equipment in your first month you got a 30-day trial period to test everything out and you can return it and get a full refund if you want and then after that 99 bucks a month which is still pretty steep but while they're in this startup zone i think that's kind of the intention over time once they can catch up on demand that's when they can start lowering prices but it's very very difficult to create a global internet service affordably and profitably which is why there's talk of starlink actually ipo'ing next year which i'm interested in but right now they've reported that they're serving 140 000 customers so i'm happy to be one of them but they have hundreds of thousands of people in pretty much every country trying to order this thing and the problem with the current design that you know i've shown in my videos before with that circular dish is that it's apparently kind of pricey to build in fact they lose money on every sale hoping to make it back with recurring revenue in the long run so spacex told us that it cost them about fifteen hundred dollars to make each one of these dishing flat face packages but now with the updated design that we're seeing that's more squared off and i'm noticing a lot of welcome changes it feels like they listened to my requests maybe they even watched my review because now the cable can be removed from the dish itself which i always thought was a huge design oversight the cable looks a lot thinner you can swap it out for a longer cable and i don't see the giant you know big nub that was on the cat6 wire that came with my starlink antenna so it should be much easier to install for you guys and based on the artwork that we're seeing they've also provided a better router now it doesn't look like most traditional routers still so it's possible that the range might not be very good just because it doesn't have standard antennas like most wi-fi routers do but i'm hoping this one has wi-fi six because the one they include in the package does not which i thought was weird and it has this cool design of the earth and mars you know orbit trajectories around the sun so starlink of course is helping fund spacex's mission of making life multiplanetary so i think it's really cool for them to put their artwork on every router however from this artwork i no longer see the separate black box that i currently have that i have to plug in to dishy mcflatface but then also plug that in separately to a router it's possible now that spacex may have combined the modem and router into one product maybe to save on cost i'm not sure of the specs of this router specifically so i'm gonna keep my eyes peeled on anybody that gets delivery of this new updated starlink dish but basically this should allow them to scale production faster and i believe the square design of the dish should be easier to scale it makes a lot of sense too if you've seen tear downs of dishy mcflatface like it's basically just a bunch of antennas kind of pointed in all directions at once but when you're trying to track with starlink satellites in orbit they're all mostly going to be moving in similar directions so once dishy finds the optimum viewing angle it's basically going to stick with it and stay there like mine i plug it in it finds its position and then it stays there for months and months but it's mainly just going to be tracking with a pretty predictable orbit of each satellite so having kind of like a long runway approach to those antennas so that you stay connected as long as possible likely makes a lot more sense than going with the round approach because that round circular dish is still going to be optimizing for a predictable satellite pattern so having all of these extra antennas on the side that likely won't get used as much probably results in excess parts and excess money that is spent on every one of these things that is produced so i still think it looks great it looks very futuristic and it should still have a heater built in for the snow and yes of course my internet still works great in all weather conditions i've clocked it over 250 megabits down even when it's raining today is cloudy and it's still fast so don't worry about the weather and of course spacex is trying their hardest to make sure these satellites are not visible to the naked eye very hard to spot honestly once they get into their destined parking orbit they're only really noticeable when they first get deployed out of a falcon 9 rocket after that it's much much harder to see them and they're also designed to burn up in the atmosphere if they lose connection of them so yes spacex is doing all of this legally they're making sure that they don't destroy astronomy they're trying to keep space clean as well so don't worry about the night sky being completely polluted honestly airplanes are going to pollute the sky more than starlink will so are we in favor of getting rid of all aircraft as well or i don't think so but fighting about the higher speeds and this updated design which should be much simpler and much cleaner for people to install as well as finding out about the speeds going well over a gigabit per second is exciting and also on top of that we're seeing several starlink dishes installed at tesla superchargers which is pretty awesome so they're gonna provide free wi-fi to everyone parked at superchargers so that's just awesome i'm very excited for the future of this service and i'm happy to be funding it so happy to be done with expensive comcast and away from their crappy customer service hopefully in the near future we can actually start seeing some updates on when you can take your starlink dish with you they say you're going gonna be able to do that later but i haven't seen any announcements on it but i would love to take it on trips or even to other countries just so i can have fast reliable internet no matter where i am in the globe that just sounds awesome so feel free to let me know how you guys feel about all these starlink updates down below this is your spacex sheep here and i'll see you in the next one [Music]
