New Orleans Saints vs Philadelphia Eagles 1991 Week 7

[Music] veteran Stadium in downtown Philadelphia Pennsylvania the undefeated New Orleans Saints come down to take on the Philadelphia Eagles good afternoon everybody I'm Vern Lundqvist along with Dan Fouts a quick update on a report that Dan had on the NFL today Craig Hayward sent back to New Orleans early this morning to face charges of simple battery placed against him by two women after an incident on Friday night notwithstanding his absence and given the fact Dan that we've got two of the better defenses in the NFL I think the edge offensively will go to still to New Orleans why you got a look at the quarterback situation with the Saints Bobby Hebert is having a heck of a year after being out all of last year for the Eagles this is gret Brad Gables second start the Eagles will try to give him some help in the past protection today by you going against Jackson and swelling with two tight ends Maurice Johnson and Keith Jackson they're going to try and give the youngster some help it is simply a gorgeous day the temperature 61 degrees wind slight wind out of the Northwest at 5 to 10 humidity 52% and a 30% chance of rain though right now the skies are clear Morten Andersen will kick-off to for filling for New Orleans 17 of his 28 kickoffs this year have resulted in touch bags including all seven that he kicked against the Minnesota Vikings Philadelphia has won the toss the Eagles will be going from our left to our right rod Harris is back we're Thomas Sanders and that slight breeze hits Bullock a little more swiftly than we thought Morton's a confident type of guy - two Randall Cunningham is and it'll be third down against this very difficult New Orleans st. people's but then I ask you Vern who is comparable to Randall Cunningham I've yet to see a guy that has those types of tools well it's interesting damn when you talk about the absence of a running game for the Eagles and their way down this year averaging 2.6 yards per carry they they were way up a year ago but most of the yardage was by Cunningham and that's where they miss him in addition to his basket ed McMahon's got the ponytail growing really long rent he's the emergency quarterback today and if we see him it will be an emergency he can barely even walk Pat Ryan is also of course on the roster and he's the backup handoff to Thomas Sanders Shore to the fourth down it'll be a punting situation now for the Eagles this is an unusual call at third and two to go into the shotgun and then run the draw play off of it but to shows you the type of respect that Co tight has for this front for in the nickel use notice there's swelling and Jackson they become defensive ends in the nickel situation and that's where they pick up most of their sacks well Jeff Eagles to punt into the wind ground they just haven't recovered that many they've recovered 9 of the 21 but they have forced them 3rd down and 2 Eric Martin starts in motion then slows up blocked out by a their stunts by the Eagle defense and the ball caught by Eric Martin for a first down Hopkins misses the tackle and then Ben Smith does get it but it's first down New Orleans but a flag is down at the line of scrimmage bring it back once the blitz come from the right side there there's a safety coming in and now the coverage on Martin is just too loose by Hopkins but it all comes back that really doesn't matter because of a personal foul penalty against the Saints 652 that's a request to reset the clock at 6:52 Jim Mora who was the head go to the Philadelphia stars of the old USFL here back in 83 and 84 now Hamer is not going to let us know who was guilty the foul so the mechanics of officiating are forgotten for the moment we don't know who it was and the guy that did it he's pretty happy about its alignment only time you ever hear his name is when there's a penalty third and 11 unless they're coming second sack of the ball game Clyde Simmons gets the sack and that is his seventh and a half this year here's quiet on the end of the line here but this is a coverage sack in the secondary neighbor just steps up in time he had a sixth sense about him knowing where that goal line was we do have a penalty flag down though the defense number 46 Zell Jenkins for holding and this will give the Saints a first down you talking about a big penalty Wow so instead of third or rather fourth down from the one-yard line it's a first down out of the 14 but Carson who we did say if they had great coverage in the secondary honestly Jenkins had good coverage on his guy Carson who was with Chris Eco tied on the staff of the Jets head coach last year in Cleveland and here's a there on first down he finds Gerald early and early is out with another first down at the 32 so how the fortunes do change it would have been fourth in a ton at the one and now back to back first downs out of the 36 and with the loss of iron head Haywood Heyward and John theis who was not active to date with a sore right ankle the Saints have to rely on their passing attack more than they normally would like to talk to Carl Smith the offense coordinator before the game and he said he really doesn't feel comfortable one-yard line that would have forced a fourth down from the goal line and that was a negated by a holding : eyes el Jenkins and now a 15-yard Iran keep Jackson and the thing that Richie Cote I told us at the very beginning of the year is that that's one area of his football team he wanted to improve upon and that's the discipline side and that is of course shown up in the penalties department that was just a lack of discipline on the part of Keith Jackson now first down and 18 from the 38 yard line after the penalty smelling his killing gable gets rid of it incomplete Vaughn Johnson defending keep Jackson on the play one doesn't see Johnson back that much in pass coverage talk to the four linebackers yesterday of the Saints and Dan said how do you guys beat Philadelphia Johnson immediately said stop the run and Pat swellings had sacked the quarterback you know what type of mental framework these guys have Johnson is great against the run and look at this statistically not a point in the last 12 quarters and nobody scored on him in the first quarter all year and they lead the league in fewest points allowed they lead the league in just about every category defensively on second down Gable back and he finds Keith Jackson again there's a twin tackled by the Saints toy cooked and Vaughn Johnson [Applause] so a toy cook coming out of the elevator last night he said tell everybody joy cook is playing great quarterback or corn corner by the corner bet even stretching is pointless this guy's doing pretty good though Brad gable I've been impressed so far with the the way he is getting back in the pocket getting rid of the ball and avoiding sacks because his Saints have been putting good pressure on him he's shown a lot of poise so far third and 11 gable came into the game having completed 16 of 30 now flush down to the right Roy green is wide open and he never saw him Wow boy green in the endzone was six yards behind vince buck but i think at the time that gable looks up he's got the pressure on him and he's moving out of the pocket and a lot goes through his mind he's probably thinking hey I don't want to throw an interception but you're right Verne here goes green across the end zone across the goal line into the end zone there was also a flag on the play and a discussion forthcoming we'll see who it is here's Dale Hamer illy the formation number 63 not lined up on touchdown run of Dalton Hilliard's last week against Atlanta proved to the coaching staff that he's a hundred percent they feel a lot more comfortable about having him in the backfield and he means so much to this Saint offense with his ability to run the ball and the feeling and relationship that he has with his offensive linemen see neither team running the ball with great facility thus far they for the quarterback stepping up in the pocket I guarantee if he was playing Randall Cunningham today he would be looking for Randall to escape to the outside so Jackson obviously knows the personnel the Eagles third and 13 those are two of six on their third downs thus far in the game gable intercepted by pong Johnson picked off by New Orleans and they will have good field position his first interception of the season well Gables trying to force this one into the deep secondary there to Roy green number 81 but that's a heck of a catch by Vaughn Johnson and also a heck of a job of getting deep in the secondary from his middle linebacker position [Applause] and Keith Byars he is down on the field with an injury and look out deep Vaughan Johnson is he's about 20 yards deep in the secondary and that really gives a a lot of you see buyers go down on his back looked like it might have been a sprained ankle of some type but when your linebackers can get back that deep in the secondary that helps out those corner backs tremendously here's Byers fighting off the block of gene Atkins and now oh my goodness that's a left knee there Ricky Jackson inadvertently rolls into him and Byers is not sure where exactly he is and he's upset with the Saints but that was not an illegal playing boy Byers is really he's somewhere else right now in a lot of pain [Applause] boffo Davis the trainer helping him out and he had some words to say it wasn't an illegal play at all though now you know on those interceptions all hell breaks loose because there's bodies flying all over the see him walking off the field because that looked like potentially that could have been very damaging to his left knee after the interception New Orleans with the first down at the 40 the handoff goes couple of shots at him today had a neighbor hang on to this one with brown and company all over his back he wants to get rid of this ball early after the fake but there's good coverage in the did quite well directing the two-minute offense [Applause] left side Barnett he gets out of bounds and kills the clock at the 35 yard line 118 remaining well on the outside as Fred Barnett and this is just a delay route but after the catch here watch as he turns around there's nothing but Saints nowhere to go it almost appeared that he injured himself but he's still in the game you remember he is playing with a sore hamstring Barnett comes left navel 9 of 14 modest numbers as the Minnesota at once fumbled twice across the middle wide-open Jackson and Keith Jackson has almost half the number he had for the season coming in a gain of 16 and time has been called on the field by the Eagles gable hurried over to talk to Co tight and then someone on the field call timeout well the key to this play is how on the motion man we've got buyers clearing out and then in behind him is Keith Jackson watch the tandem route here Byers attracts the underneath coverage and that opens up Jackson a little deeper and that's a fine read by Gable but you notice he's getting a little bit better pass protection now the Saints are allowing these types of receptions and completions but you know they'll starting to tighten it up once they cross the 40-yard line air 64 seconds to go before the half and Philadelphia with one timeout left gable said he came to Philadelphia because he looked at their roster and thought this was the best chance he had of making a team the number three quarterback last year and this summer was Don McPherson he beat him out that hurts [Music] first and ten Table five Jackson again what a combo they have connected now for the sixth time in the first half that's a gain of 23 well Gables going to hustle them up to the line is going to try and kill the clock it appears with an incomplete there it is the thief Jackson's coming up big now for Brad gable watch Jackson here go down and hook between linebackers a nice little hole there but this is a heck of a throw by gable as he drills it between Vaughn Johnson on the inside and one of the cornerbacks on the outside but this is why keep Jackson's an all-pro and why he has to play like one if the Eagles are going to have going to get a win what a confidence-building drive for this free agent rookie now gable and it's all over the pass is intercepted by Reginald Jones his second pick of the year [Applause] oh dear well it's a classic bin but don't break defense again it's zone coverage and gable just doesn't see this guy Reggie Jones on the outside he had buyers going to the corner in Barnet was in the short flat area Jones had both men covered and he gets his first interception Reginald Jones a rookie from Memphis State and so the Philadelphia drive comes to naught with 37 seconds remaining and gable is picked off for the second time in the first half keith is telling of him yeah I was open I'm catchin everything you've been throwing to me coming up at the half break at Jerry back in our studios dan Rather with a special CBS News report Steve Walsh still on a quarterback hands it off on the draw play Dalton Hilliard and they managed to get it out to the 36 yard line clock showing 29 seconds to go rich Miano with the tackle [Applause] time has been called after the first down has obtained well they said that Bobby a bear got dinged a little bit and that he would return they may be just waiting till the second half for him to return him a little bit extra rest on that sideline he doesn't appear to be doing too good that looks like a nice bag he's got on his head the problem with the playing on this astroturf is you get hit one time by the defender then you hit the ground and here on this artificial surface it's extremely hard and so it's like a two-for-one sale where you get hit once by the defender and then the ground hits you and that's what I think is what happened to Bobby a bear let me try and clarify that point about Steve Walsh and the trade with the Cowboys if he played 80% of the offensive plays over the last 11 games of last year and all of this season plus the Saints made it to the championship game then Dallas got a number one that fast is incomplete if he doesn't play the 80% then Dallas gets a number two and as best they could figure he had to play most of this game plus the rest of the season for Dallas to get the number one I wish come forward to corroborate Anita Hills story that Supreme Court nominee Clarence Thomas sexually harassed her while she was his aide all four said that Professor Hill indicated to them years ago that Clarence Thomas was sexually harassing her Anita said that Clarence Thomas had repeatedly asked her out she told me that she had of course refused but that he wouldn't seem to take no for an answer Anita Hill told me that she was upset because her boss was making sexual advances towards her I recall that she was clearly very disturbed by these advances and that she cried during the telephone call all four of today's witnesses so far have also testified that they know Anita Hill to be a person of good character sound mind and not given to lying or fantasy they said she was steady private and reliable some Republican senators on the committee are now in the process of trying to discredit the testimony of these witnesses before today's hearings started some Republican senators were busy trying to discredit professor Hill and her corroborating witnesses for example senator Danforth of Missouri suggested on CBS's Face the Nation that professor Hill may have mental problems several what makes that transition so tough from safety the corner well athletically to be a cornerback you have to have it all speed quickness and guile and to be a youngster like that that's the toughest position on the defensive Saints looking for their first third down conversion my split my place of blitz nope four-man rush pressure coming on walls and it's almost picked off it is grabbed why Floyd Turner at the 32 that's a first down [Applause] Turner's the inside receiver here and he'll go down into the corner and the coverage here is just too loose because this ball was well under throwing the good pressure by the Eagle front for Turner does a nice job of stopping and leaning back getting his arms underneath that ball to secure the catch after 32 first down now they're going to review here's Hilliard in the backfield he's going to be working man a man with set jointer down and out he is Walsh's last read on this play but you can't get a better mismatch than the running back with Hilliard type of moves against any linebacker good job by Walsh finding Dalton Hilliard in for the six first touchdown throw of the season for Steve Walsh first touchdown catch of the season for Dalton Hilliard who is not that active in the passing game and Morton Anderson on to try the extra point he ran a heck of a pattern though he froze Joyner and broke to the outside and when he caught the ball he wasn't even concerned with where Joyner was he knew that that goal line was close and boy did he go for it injured players Ben Smith who was down and he's trotting off by himself [Applause] so on 3rd down a 14 yard pass play Steve Walsh the Dalton Hilliard and set up of course by the interception by toy cook in all of last season the saint defensive team at 8th pass down and out he freezes a linebacker and there's nobody else there because the st. other wide receivers are clearing it out but that's a perfect mismatch there one on one on a linebacker and that's usually the result on third down a 14 yard touchdown pass and the undefeated New Orleans Saints have taken the lead well turnovers have been so much a part of this ball game for for Philadelphia now three of them pass interceptions and the New Orleans ten points have come as a direct result of getting those turnovers well your offense pays off your defense and that's a heck of a team effort there that's how your undefeated now the reject from the 30-yard line and he puts this one three yards back how about that's a 74 yard kick by Morten Andersen what a gun and foot two now if he hits it 180 yards says the Cowboys get a first-round pick only if it's 75% of the damn time in the third quarter on the road okay we'll let that one go now by the Steve Wallace is going to be in there and with
