well let me ask you a question if you walked into your local gun store and they had both of the new marlin 1895s the trapper and the spl which one would you pick well in today's video we've got both of them and we'll give you enough information to help you make the right decision i hope you'll stick around [Music] hi george here and welcome to tales from target suite where i'll share my perspective on guns and shooting and we'll have an adventure or two that'll make even a grown man smile and i do have the brand new trapper marlin 1895 trapper right here and i want to introduce you to somebody this is clint a bear and so clint has brought his marlin 1895 sbl and this is the brand new marlin just released a couple of days ago the 1895 trapper and right now i'm going to give you a close look and then in a few minutes we're going to shoot both of these guns we're going to compare specs and performance so i hope you'll stick around okay i'm going to give you guys a fly over here and then i'm going to let clint talk about some of the details okay clint okay george we'll first go over the trapper here the 1895 trapper as you can tell the stock is a laminate it's a little bit darker it comes with a satin finish comes with the skinner trapper peep sight on the rear and the skinner blade on the front as you can see it's threaded to allow for a suppressor muzzle brake to be added right and then we have a white line on that front side instead of the this is the five rod 16 inch barrel and the magazine capacity is five plus one and the twist in this barrel twist in both of them are 1 and 20 inches right hand twist awesome okay now in comparison the sbl as you can tell the laminate stock's a little bit lighter colored it's got the polished finish on the stainless it's a little bit a little bit shinier and as you can see it's got the full picatinny rail with the peat built in this is made by ruger allows for you know regular optics scout scope red dot it's got a fiber optic front sight also threaded for a suppressor or muzzle brake okay it's got a 19 inch barrel so it's three inches longer than the trapper model and it's got one more capacity because of that so six plus one okay and as far as weight goes the sbl is 7.3 pounds the trapper is 7.1 pounds awesome well done thank you and one thing they have done is they have spiral fluted and you've seen i'm sure you guys have seen this in other videos but they've actually cut a spiral on the on the bolt and we'll open that up here in a minute and show you and that does a couple of things number one it reduces the amount of metal to metal contact when the bolt is cycling and it looks way cool another thing that that clint pointed out earlier is how easy it is to load and we'll demo that here in just a few minutes but the loading gate is really really soft and there's no there are no teeth inside the loading gate so uh yeah very smooth edges on the load gate and the lever itself they have smooth out all those pieces not going to cut your fingers really really nice improvement that ruger's done since they took over all right let's load one up and shoot it what do you say yes sir let's do it okay we're going to shoot these bad boys now we're going to be shooting some winchester super x 300 grain jacketed hollow points what's the velocity on those the velocity on these are 1880. muzzle velocity and muzzle energy is 23.55 wow pretty potent stuff yes sir it is all right let's check it out this is the sbl it's gonna hold six plus one in the chamber one two three four five and six and man that loads so nice so smooth it's great that's it 39. pretty nice okay we're gonna check out how the trapper shoots now it holds five plus one so one less than the spl oh wow that is smooth the load one thing i was wondering is if the um if the texturing would make a different loading experience but i didn't sense that at all no i don't believe so but there is no burrs loading it up is real smooth actually all right let's see how she shoots that's it wow very fast very fast so clinton and i were just remarking about how tastefully done the laser marking is done on the barrel check that out all right the proof's in the pudding let's see how this load gate works well i can tell you right away it is it is smooth to load all right here we go what do you think i think it's awesome i really do so while that's fresh in my mind i want to shoot the trapper with its 16.1 inch barrel and the matte finish on barrel and receiver but again the barrel marking is very tastefully done and i like the way they have a profiled insert for the rear sight dovetail very very nice if you guys aren't familiar with skinner sites these these inserts do come out and then you can put a different size aperture depending on what you want if you want a finer peak for more precision or if you want a larger ghost ring type site but let's load this thing up again the trapper has a five five round magazine capacity five plus one in the chamber and let's see how the shorter barrel reacts sweet nice so what did you think and i liked them a lot really um they both have a little bit different feel to them really yeah really do recoil big difference you think not really yeah not that i could notice i mean where did you notice the exact same ammo yeah i didn't notice it was but i did notice when i was sitting back on the tailgate and uh clinton was shooting that the fireball coming out of the 16-inch barrel was gigantic compared to just an extra well that's three inches of barrel so yeah three inch barrel difference that's exactly giant muzzle flash not so bad here but as far as comfort to shoot i didn't notice it but that does beg the question do we want to do something about this short barrel and see if we can tame that muzzle okay well let's shoot this guy now and see if we can tell much a difference okay so i have high hopes for the comet muzzle break from an enterprise decision you know i didn't notice this earlier george but that muzzle break actually matches the uh the finish on the cap the magazine cap oh how about that awesome okay here we go 1895 trapper with muzzle break and there you know do you edit out your flinches or do you just leave them in for uh i always leave them but let's give it a try let's see what you think just gonna do three rounds okay all right let's see how the range of point ranger point precision muzzle brake does i think it tamed itself i think i noticed a little bit of difference i sure did um i sure did and one thing i am struggling with and this is my fault but and i noticed you you uh you didn't hesitate but there were a couple of times where you didn't get it open all the way and there was a hesitation i had the same problem and i think it's because i'm not used to the larger loop on these guns i've always shot the standard loop the standard finger lever so there's not there's not room in here for your hand to do this right yeah and with gloves you know you're not going to have that much play you know you can always wrap this with leather or paracord too to kind of lessen up that play but just like anything it's a new gun we haven't shot it before so it's going to take some time to for us to get used to working the lever but uh yeah i mean i i struggle with it a bit too but the action's really smooth but that's one thing with lever actions i was always taught you have to throw that lever through don't do it halfway throw it all the way yeah close it back down yourself so what do you think you have a preference between the two i mean uh i know this is your gun and this is my gun but actually you have one of these yeah i have both models in my collection now um i don't know they they're both similar yet different that's a good way to describe it you know this one has a little bit of a satin finish the darker laminate this one's a little bit shinier with a lighter laminate finish um and i think if i was going to throw one in the truck it would be this one right here um this one is a little bit finer finished different different uh the the rugers the ruger specific uh sight that they made it's really nice i like the way it's done it's fairly low profile unobtrusive it's a big ghost ring and so so if you're not accustomed to a large ghost ring like that uh it's going to take a little getting your precision uh down pat through that large opening whereas the skinner i've got skinners on three or four different guns in my safe right now so yeah i've always liked always like skinner skinner sites and still do yes sir me too that's a great product but as far as either gun if i had either one i would be happy and the difference between a 19-inch barrel 45-70 and a 16-inch barrel 45-70 is they're both short-barrel guns they are and uh lightweight uh my 1886 weighs over 10 pounds and these weigh seven 7.1 7.3 so pretty lightweight and handy little rifles they really are um you know something like i said that you can do on both rifles is add this ranger point precision comet muzzle break to either one or you can add a suppressor so yeah i think that's a great idea and that that's probably going to be uh make a big difference in recoil and certainly team down this uh here underneath the tin roof team down that massive report yeah but hey i want to say thanks to uh you guys and girls for watching i i i have really enjoyed this it's been great to have clint here and um and we've kind of struck a friendship we had breakfast uh a week or two ago yeah a couple weeks ago they actually ran this out of the restaurant didn't they yeah we got the we got a little bit long-winded and they wanted us to carry our conversation outside so yeah we had a good time we talked guns for a while but anyway thanks for watching and i'll see you guys [Music]
