if you're a traditionalist too and you love  the 4570 that caliber gets the job done   who knew that the american lever gun  and a caliber like 4570 government   could become modernized well it's 2020 and  here we are with not one but two modern   lever action rifles both made in america  the marlin model 1895 dark and the henry   x model i'm so glad you joined me today  while we check out these two modern classics oh yeah american-made lever  actions never were this modern when we look at these guns right out of the box  the first thing that we notice is that the henry   has a longer barrel so just under 20 inches about  19 and three quarters here on the henry x model   versus a 16 and a quarter inch a little  bit heavier barrel on the marlin dark   you'll see right from the tip there both  of them are threaded for that muzzle device   we've got a fiber optic sight system on the henry  versus a more standard iron sight system on the   marlin with a ghost ring rear where we have the  fully adjustable red fiber optic on the henry when   we're looking down the barrels on these two rifles  what we find on the inside is the same rifling a   1 and 20 twist which will stabilize the range of  45 70 hunting bullets my favorite falling in that   300 grain range but if you want to work up to the  400s in the suppressed loads or down to the 250s   the 1 and 20 twist will stabilize that so that's  a strong similarity the other thing that we see   with these that looks similar you see black stocks  and black finish on both of these but what you're   looking at is actually two different things  on the marlin it's a woodstock painted black   that's slightly heavier with the webbing finish  that gives me some grip when i look at the henry   this is a standard black synthetic a much lighter  and slightly more hollow feeling synthetic so not   quite as heavy of a build but what you gain with  that is a picatinny rail here if you want to add   a laser or a light or some other accessory and  also the m lock slots at that four end there for   additional accessories one thing that folks notice  on lever guns is always the size of the lever   bigger isn't always better but then again  sometimes it is and in this case with the   4570 we like a large loop something that's easy  to work because it's a hunting gun that's made   for rough conditions and a lot of times that means  wearing gloves the henry has a slightly oversized   lever but in the case of the marlin you get  the true large lever and not just a large lever   but one that comes braided up with paracord so  when you're running that lever you have that extra   little bit of padding on your hand just in case  you're not wearing gloves and i'll tell you what   that's been nice when we've been on the range  and in the field one major design difference   that you'll notice right from the get-go  is the design of the receiver and the tube   you'll see here on the henry and you've heard me  talk about the benefits of this many times before   that new side loading gate design on the henry  gives you the best of both worlds not only do you   have their standard tubular loading but you also  now have the addition of that receiver loading   port that's the same as what you find on the  marlin is that magazine loading port but in this   case no way to load from the tube so 4570 is some  serious medicine and this is one of the federal   hammer downs in a 300 grain projectile here and  what we do to load the marlin in the 1895 is like   any other marlin is using this side loading gate  so it's just as simple as sliding it into there   that magazine tube will hold five rounds when we  want to load and chamber around just as simple as   working that lever right there were loaded you'll  see my safety is still engaged meaning i can   safely lower that hammer on my loaded round now  if i want to empty this all i have to do again   work the lever and i would do that to clear the  magazine tube loading up the henry x model with   these nice 45-70 federal hammer down rounds can  be just the same as the marlin when we use that   side loading gate so it's the same deal here as  just feeding that side gate to top off your tube   you have here a four round magazine tube instead  of a five on the marlin so it just like that we   can chamber around and empty it out but what  we can do with the henry that we can't do with   the marlin is now move from loading just with the  side gate to also loading from the magazine tube here we go i'm set up at 100 yards with the   marlin dark here and for the accuracy test i'm  shooting what i plan to hunt with this time which   is the federal premium new hammer down rounds  made specifically for lever actions especially   side loading gate tube feeds like  this marlin so these are 300 grain   bonded bullets that should perform excellent on  deer hogs bear and all of that size of game so   let's give it a whirl i've got a round in the  chamber just gonna [ __ ] the hammer take off   my safety and hopefully punch out some bullseyes  here now let's make no bones about it a 4570 is   not a minute of angle shooting caliber generally  at 100 yards but i do expect some pretty darn good accuracy here we go my first shot i'm cutting just high above  the bullseye darn that loophole glasses clear   when i cycle that i can get  that crossbolt safety back on   if i want to then i can lower the hammer and  i know that i'm blocked here with the safety i want to get back in position here there we go round number two i'm touching that first round i  can see it clearly at 100 yards   with this scope and i'm feeling darn  good about that group this is looking   shaping up to be my best so far as long  as i do my part i think we have a winner let's put round number three in there should we that is a pretty darn nice three shot group  for a 16 and a quarter inch barrel 4570.   let me tell you i am a hundred percent confident  on dear bear hogs or any of that size game that   shot is in the vitals right where i want to  be and that animal is not going anywhere with   that kind of knockdown power all right it's time  to do some accuracy testing now with the henry   in 4570 we're at 100 yards we've  got a pretty good wind coming today   but we're gonna see what we can do and how  this compares to the marlin dark so let's go just cutting the bottom of the  bullseye on that first shot these are 300 grain hammer downs nice shot there cutting the first  one i like that a lot one more time now that is not bad that last shot was just a hair  more to the left but at 100 yards i will take that   any day of the week and i'll tell you what i have  complete confidence in the federal hammer down for   hunting and i think this rifle is ready to go  if you're in the market for one of these guns   the decision is a tough one i'm not here to make  it any easier for you but just to help you find   which one may fit your individual needs better  heck we get down to the specifics and even the   price is close we're at 949 for the marlin and  970 for the henry and real world prices are going   to put those probably very close to the same so  it's really a matter of which features you like   but i'll tell you what in an american made lever  action you really can't go wrong with either one   if you're a marlin fan or you're a henry fan or  you're somewhere in between if you pick up one of   these rifles and do some practice on the range  and get this out in the woods this fall i'll   bet you're going to have some great results i'm  kristen for guns.com if you're in the market for   a gun like this or any other hunting guns check  out thatguns.com vault and be sure to give us   a like share and subscribe
