hi guys I'm me hello and welcome back to the channel where you join me in angle home Sweden at the home of Koenigsegg where behind me is their brand-new mega car the YESCO it's the final days ahead of the Geneva Motor Show so the final stages in the development and preparation of this exact car but this thing is loaded with technology it's a mega car that will operate 1600 horsepower and over a thousand kilos of downforce now we're going to be joined by Christian von Koenigsegg to take a look literally under the skin some of the technology that this car offers and believe me it is very very exciting so let's get started and take a look around the Koenigsegg yes go now this is an incredibly special opportunity to be here with the car in progress behind me but let me just show you quickly what it's going to look like when we get to see it as has just been revealed at the Geneva Motor Show but the new yes go features so many different pieces of technology it has a huge amount of downforce in part thanks to that boomerang rear wing at the rear it also has the xxx suspension all around it has 1600 horsepower from the 5 liter v8 the car basically offers an awful lot but from experience there is nobody better to join us to explain this than mr. Christian von Koenigsegg himself how are you I'm great how are you sure me I'm very very excited it's brilliant to catch up again and congratulations on this well thank you so much well I'm also very excited I can imagine by this moment and to be able to show you what we've been up to the last three years it's just a massive project for us and then coming to fruition and being able to show it at the Geneva Motor Show which is kind of our home base for revealing certain cars so can we start from the very beginning what is the ESCO how does it fit the name the story absolutely absolutely so it's basically the the spiritual successor of the Agera RS or the Agera range of course the reg era that we're producing right now is kind of our GT esque statement saying that it's extremely fun and fast around a racetrack but it's it's focus is really to be the the fastest most exciting car on the road with incredible creature comforts and videos the Giro RS was always the more lightweight rude visceral track-focused kind of monster annexing yeah and we kind of want to have this two two car model setup where one has yeah the more GTS focus on one the more rural track focus and I think the the YESCO really has captured the essence of the a garrison and just taking it into the future in into the next level and making it compliant with a very various set of strict regulations going forward so it is it fair to say this is the most extreme car you've built I mean I think the the the rigor is extreme in its own right yes just extreme in a little with a different flavor okay so jokingly we say all the gears we saved in the rig era yes in this car acid okay night that has it no gear so this has nine gears so and this is probably the last chemxtech that it's just propelled with a combustion engine going forward we're seeing it will be hybrids or pure electric cars and so on but this is the last four to a super lightweight just a combustion engine car very akin very much akin to the Agera R s okay and and one of the most important things the name itself the yes co yeah so many people have heard the working name for the for the product which was which was rhino racks it was one of our engineers who came up with it we're in ballpark we have the Norse gods in Scandinavia and so on and I said Ragnarok what does that mean it means the end of the world okay that's weird that's and then we kind of figure in Mike maybe the end of the world for our competitors so we kind of stuck with it but then I guess also when Aston chose thereafter to call their car the Valkyria was also this norse god thing and actually our sales director said wouldn't it be great to honor your father he's a great friend of my father as well I mean he just turned 80 we have the 25th anniversary this year and he's very viral and alert and comes to Geneva every year he was very instrumental in getting us to this point helping me out in the early days also being an entrepreneur and I said that's a fantastic idea I mean to be able to honor your father like that with a product like this when when when he has such a keen interest for what we're doing and was so instrumental in helping out in the early days so so yeah I we asked ran with that one and and today one week before the show he doesn't actually know I'm doing this and we're hoping to keep this a secret until the unveiling just hoping he doesn't faint okay well with the cover it's an amazing story and I mean we're just standing here taking a look at the car with many of the panels fitted but still quite a lot to go can we can we just take a walk around and take it all in I think there's a lot to talk about your gearbox the light speed transmission the aerodynamics the dynamics of the car the chassis yeah it'sit's fully reworked it's it's very much a new car I mean every Koenigsegg is an evolution you will find some components from a Nagar RS you will find some components from a rig era but there is also always a lot of new you would what you won't found on fine on this car is some components from a CCX the kind of goes back maybe one or two generations or something but then it's always a lot of new and in this case it's a completely new monocoque it's a little bit longer and taller the suspension is very much reworked due to the crazy amount of downforce as when you put in a track mode you have 880 kilos of downforce at 250 km/h which is the highest number I've ever heard who is to say I need to hold a bit 880 kilos at 250 km/h exactly that's an awful long we spent thousands of hours in our a supercomputer see if the backwards or forwards with the designers and if you go through the current and look you can almost see the downforce working yes visually with all the ducts and holes and in litters and wings and tunnels and it develops a bit on from what suddenly I've seen on other other models you've made before for example having that top mounted wing that comes out of the rear deck absolutely on the one-to-one I think at first it's it's it's a tribute to the one-to-one and and of course the or has had a similar smaller version of that but this is a really massive yeah so we had to rework the triplets in the rear also adding a track mode spring that comes into effect when you lower the car and also the damper has active bump and rebound and then we also put this in the front of the car the same reason to really balance out the car in track mode when this crazy downforce kicks in and it gives a great opportunity for for tuning because we can we can actively tune bump and rebound on three dampers and actively set ride height or spring preload on three dampers on each axle so there's a lot to play around with it in a way there's a lot to get lost with yes so you have to be very careful to do a step-by-step process when we really start hitting the tracks but it's it's a really fantastic setup to have compliance compliancy in the suspension at super high downforce levels to keep the car stable and planted you know but at the same time when you race the car that you take out two and a half times the spring rates and it becomes very comfortable and Road usable at the same time so it's very much a dr. Jekyll and mr. Hyde okay the wheelbase is is is 40 millimeters longer than a Magaro RS as we stretch the chassis with 40 millimeters so it's still a very yeah normal type of wheelbase it's not super long but what we did to make sure we have a very good turning circle still like our cars are famous for we we added rear-wheel steering and and this also even though we always had fantastic high speed stability it will give even better high speed stability although that's one of the things I always remember you do your testing at the local runway and up to 300 kilometres an hour braking you don't need to touch the steering wheel right the car goes dead arrow straight that has to do with the worry I mean many aspects of why that happens its aerodynamics and stiffness in the chassis but if you just look at the suspension part for example you have these extremely large bearings 240 millimeter bearings which makes this area stiffer than most other hyper cars we have very wide pickup points for the wishbones we have very long wishbones on the lower side and the pickup points are needle bearings with all rings you have some compliancy but super good control so the reason why we can do that and have that kind of stability that is so unique is due to the the stiffness and the low stiction and friction in these systems so the engine is quite revamped we have new cylinder heads mostly for emission reasons so emission regulations are getting stricter stricter and of course we have to be very wary or co2 emissions and things like that especially since this is a pure combustion engine car luckily it also runs on e85 which is 85% renewable fuel so we can be very very low ones actual co2 additions to the atmosphere but still we also have to comply with with reducing the exhaust for yeah that concludes the world for humans and animals and so on so we have a new tumble ports where we slide in a valve to reduce well to increase the velocity and create turbulence at lower rpm speeds for better combustion and then we have a secondary air system to preheat the catalytic converters we have electrically heated catalytic converters and we also managed to make the student has a slightly lighter and the valvetrain slightly lighter to have even more rpm capability on top of that we changed the firing order from a 90 degree crankshaft which makes the engine run normally smoother to 180 degree crankshaft because in this car and that is lighter and you get linear more power and so on but you get more vibration so in this car we carried over the active actively mounted engine with rubber bushings from the rig era ok in the a gear or as it was solidly mounted to the monocoque we can take a little bit more vibration before without it being annoying and therefore we could make the world's lightest production v8 crankshaft weighing only 12 kilos okay so the way this thing revs when you blip the throttle it's almost like a Formula One car okay it's just incredible so the engine is really revamp tanned the most powerful engine ever produced on 95 octane European whew it gives 1280 horse powers on 5 liters and that's equivalent to 91 in the US yeah in on e85 on a full tank we eight to five it's 1600 horsepower which is just insane from a 5 liter engine we yes worldwide homologated up until 2026 Wow so we couple this to a brand new design the transmission mm-hmm so as this is not a hybrid and it's just the lightest possible combustion engine core you can have we created a new type of transmission with nine gears with basically no shift time between the gears it's like a dual clutch gearbox where you just change cultures and you have full torque and g-force throughout that process but instead of having two clutches we actually have seven clutches yeah we have no synchronizations and we have a three axle layout so we can compound the gears and therefore have fewer gears than otherwise so we can make it lighter and smaller because we can combine gears to create more gear rates just and otherwise okay and instead of synchronizing gears like in an AMT or or pre synchronizing and then decluttering like in an in in a DCT all the gears are clutched so you just choose from this cut to that culture this cutter that cut so you can jump from ninth to third gear okay from second to fifth as fast as from one to the next so we came up with this little fun idea that we have a gear lever for the first time in a clinic say in a long time it's just going to be mounted there yeah so it's kind of a dual not sequential shifter so you have your first steps like normal yeah but then if you're cruising on the highway at 70 miles per hour 110 hundred 20 kilometers per hour and you want to just go for it on out the bomb that is yeah then yeah you do a double click we just push it hard and the computer in the car will calculate how much can I downshift without over-revving and still have some Rev raining and it just comes to that like this straightaway but on the track you have the powers you could do that feature there as well but there you always go through the gears for engine braking and always up through the gear so it's more like a road feature but you get that immediate power surge and an immediate jump between a lot of years so it's a it's a big change going to the Lightspeed transmission here from the direct drive system in the rig area as I said earlier completely opposite for sure we're we're continuing with the direct drive system and we have some cool things down the pipeline we will progress that system as well but we like to kind of play around with our toolbox and knowledge box to optimize this in this direction and and that in the other direction kind of thing we're in a way technology agnostic we we make whatever make sense for each car so we also what I didn't mention on the engine side is that we have very big turbos to get this power out normally what that means is that you get lag and they don't boost much in lower rpm and that's not acceptable for a car like this so we were thinking maybe we should have core turbo or dual stage turbo or triple turbo and every layout we came up with most very clumsy and heavy and so on so then we realized if we have a lightweight 20 litre carbon-fiber tank with pressurized air in it so we have a small electrical compressor compressing 20 bar into a 20 liter composite tank we can strategically use this air to pre spool up the turbo by blowing air at strategic positions and also make the turbo be able to boost high pressure and lower rpms which is difficult otherwise for a big turbo and we're talking bursts of less than with a second and making the turbos feel like a really tiny one yeah even though it's it's actually big capable of huge boost pressure at IR p.m. okay and that system is it's about seven eight kilos but a quad turbo system or triple turbo system anything easily adds twenty five thirty kilos to the gallon so it was just a way of getting the same result with fewer components and lower weight yeah well blow away it's it's an interesting topic obviously something very important for performance is weight and materials and what the cars made from and we get we're getting to see a lot of carbon fiber right now yeah Rachel it looks it's a lot and and and we have a new set of wheels we have the biggest Department fiber wheels we've ever made twenty and twenty-one inch yeah I guess we can see them later and the the cool thing about that is that we've really honed in an optimized our process so even though they're the biggest wheels we ever made they're also the lightest again the 20-inch wheels in the front which are a 9 or 10 inch wide they weigh a 5.9 kilos 5.9 kilos and the rear wheels which are 21 and 12 and a half inch wide is 7.47 so 21 inch rear wheels 7.4 kilos Wow nowadays I mean we pioneer the carbon fiber wheel especially the hollow one but now and that was in 2011 now now you have Porsche Ferrari forth etcetera come in with carbon fiber wheels but they don't use our process so they are like 25 percent heavier then you have the hollow core and they don't use prepreg Auto Club they use more the RTM principle which means you have more epoxy in your wheel done in our case so it's still the lightest and most extreme wheel mythology so many years later so it's I would say it's very recognizable as secure and I say we really wanted to keep the DNA and of course there is this kind of progression one thing leads to another but for us it's important that you can recognize it as a cure and I say immediately and I think we'll manage to do that quite well but there are still a lot of different solutions here I mean the car is a little bit longer and bigger the way we split up the bodywork we now have a like a quarter panel here in the front going to this aluminium piece and the quarter panel is actually the bumper so we're kind of saving apart yeah no no lines across where the headlights it's kind of water panel bumper or side thing and then we have this little bit smaller bonnet in the front here we can also see the triptych suspension there will be a good coming up here when we're done the arrow and notice also around the rear you previously always had one single very large clam excited resolution same thing here it's also split into pieces bolted to this exoskeleton structure underneath which means we can mount all these complicated hydraulics and electronics without risk of scratching bonnets in production and they are more manageable in size to install after two pieces crew going onto this exoskeleton and if you have a damaged on one side you're actually not damaging the other side it's a turret piece it's also good for like cost control and shipping of parts and things like that and just I think being more manageable because that was a ginormous part the reason you always have to be 3 persons to have it it's it's I mean we have that done on the Riviera and we're very proud of that huge big part it looks amazing especially when you hit the button with auto skin and it's open exactly so yeah maybe one day we'll go back to that again yes for this perspective spectacular aspect but this is kind of more of a racing approach kind of to make it yeah and he's here to live with his auto skin continued absolutely so I will push the button here the door is a little bit longer as the chassis stronger yeah we also redesigned the hinge so without adding components just by kind of moving them around and twisting the design a little bit we managed to get the door to do one new movement it's actually also moving upwards now not the outer turning so we're getting fifth millimeter more clearance to the ground so curbs are not an issue anymore and this design of hinge is actually retrofittable back to the earliest cutting so really if you want to have that so you can have a new door mechanism and there's I'm just gonna say there's a lot else going on here as well I noticed the mirror was turning you've also got the bird's eye 360 cameras correct and assesses temperature sensor and then there is kind of a parking sensors thing here to scan the area before the door opens so it doesn't hit anything else it's automatic okay sure here we can also see the the new steering wheel which were just programming now for the first time where we have a small screen integrated into the the steering wheel and you can see here how Wow it levels out when you when you move the steering wheel so the display moves with the steering wheel alright and it will always show that central screen so if you're keeping your hands at 93 if you're out on the track yeah you always have that perfect day without the spokes obscuring that totally of course it would be normally you would block your instrument yeah so it is small and you have to be careful what you display so it doesn't become too cluttered but it's always visible in in a track situation so there we have also these touch screens buttons on the spokes which are configurable ok I'm so over the air so we can come up with new solutions this is the first shot for the show yeah with media controls system cruise control exactly and we can you can play a movie on those buttons if you want ok whenever you want there have tickets we'll have to take touchscreens yes okay so interior in general of course obviously a lot still being done the seats being a focused car yes so we're the the Jesco with a high downforce a half bucket seats ok but then we have or down force version which you can choose which we call the Jessica 300 internally or let's say Jessica ambition 300pts okay which has a lower drag package so it doesn't have to have the triptychs in the front so we can actually by remodeling the air scoop which we don't need for yellow or downforce we can fit the roof in there which we cannot do on the on a normal yes Co and you can have memory seats and the aero package is slightly different you still have over 300 kilos of downforce a 20 50 km/h so it's still a great track car yes but with that low drag number you get there is a theoretical possibility to drive faster than 300 miles per hour well that will be fascinating to see if it can be done we will find out in due course let's call it ambition 300 sure for sure and in terms of general entertainment mod cons yeah so the the center screen is fairly similar to to the the rig era they had it has some new graphics and features and we remove some of the information from the cluster to the to the center screen as the cluster is so small and yeah so it's you have carplay you have bird's-eye view you have rearview parking you have all the controls memory seats memory mirrors all these normal things basically in pretty much the most extreme track car but right now then I notice also the continuation of that line yes split line in the front it goes through with this LED strip and out through the bigger window it's a bit wider as we go in from before through the rear bonnet which we can't see right now so it has this kind of continuation theme of of a practical feature that also becomes a design feature mmm-hmm so this chorus II with this amount of downforce obviously in 2017 you took the Agera RS in the US and went two hundred and seventy seven point nine miles per hour on average on average indeed their eternal eggs presumably with this level of downforce that's not possible no it's too much drag with this kind plus you would overload tires and things like that I got to be talking about tires yes standard option on the car yeah so you have the you have the michelin cap tus as standard and then you have the cup - ours as okay which will be able to stick with that amount of downforce when cornering yes which would be quite something as usual we have a lot of active Aero I mean part of the active air is just the way the car can change angle depending on speed and mode then we have these movable flaps underneath the prompt bumper here yeah just cutouts into the carbon that we Bend okay and we started that on the one to one program but here it's even bigger yeah before and basically what we do there is that when you get up to really high speed and you don't want more downforce than you have you push this down to bleed off downforce okay they're like up to create venturi is normally yeah and they bleed off and reduce drag and downforce as you go faster now we have this huge that's from the wheels side this is very big splitter the active wing of course yes a break you can see it okay oh wow okay so the whole the whole thing is pivoted from above yes yes so this is a continuation of the one to one top mounted active wing which was the world's first this is just even bigger and more extreme and it's very very curved for fortunately for home location reasons to stay within the bodywork but secondly since it's not allowed to stick outside of the car when it curved it you get actually a longer wing compared to its total length and if it was strange yep so that actually gives even more downforce then a massive venturi tunnel it is optimized to work well through different sets of speeds and a very open area ram a lot of the modern hyper cars when they want a good aero they cut off this section of the bodywork to free up the wheel and we wanted a little bit more elegant look so we have the bodywork here but it's a big hole here straight to the tire yeah which creates the same effect as cutting away in this area and I mean this is also quite resemblance as you said of rigorous styling yes yes absolutely I mean it's a mix between idea our gear our next-generation quranic' saying okay hopefully you know that people can see it that way we really want to stay close to our DNA but still feel fresh yeah we're not trying to follow any like design trends or anything I was was inspired by the Porsche 911 in their segment that weather design trends are square around or this or that 911 just looks like a 911 it just is what it is it's self-assured in itself and being efficient in what it's doing and that's kind of the design philosophy we go by as well sure and just just to continue a little bit more on the wing of course double-layer clean on the side yes huge and plates aggressive and plays yes yes very much so this wing is very radical and of course it helps tremendously for downforce but we've really worked through the rest of the corner to be to be efficient and optimal as well together with this massive wing I mean I know you do a lot of modeling engineering work all tying it up tying it all together yeah so basically for three years the designers and the aerodynamicist was bouncing back with a crew and then you have the homologation guys coming in so it's a very iterative process so every little thing is shaped by argument between design aero homologation and and trying to meet the targets the very very high targets we set for our results one fun thing the fuel filler I remember on the rig era of course you use auto skins I'd open up the rear class to fill it is that same here so you the rear clamp is the fuel filler oh yeah so when you're in a fuel station a gas station whole thing the whole rear opens up and then push that it's this you know what do you call it yeah you know you don't need to open anything you guys push down yeah we're just going to head off from the car for a moment I'll come back to show you some more things with it very shortly but we're going to go get a better look at the transmission the light speed transmission this new 9-speed gearbox and then pop back here very shortly so here we are the show that we created for the Motor Show well showcase everything in the drivetrain but what's very interesting to see I think is the transmission how extremely small it is it is tiny and very short very short and it has nine speeds it includes the starter motor anything resembling of a clutch or a flywheel is all integrated in the transmission and still it only weighs 90 kilos 90 kilos and it's capable of 1500 Newton meters of torque with nine speeds so it's quite revolutionary I would say in size space torque capability amount of gears and how quickly it can shift and how quickly can jump between any year to any gear a more traditional dual clutch transmission would but firstly we will say will be somewhere in the vicinity of this and the apart from the the the one in the Sheeran and the veil on the waist like 250 kilos if you would look in a Ferrari or McLaren or something there around 125 kilos ok and have a maximum of around 900 Newton metres of torque and reality smaller lighter higher maximum torque Wow yeah very exciting very very exciting and then hooked up to it a good look at the outside of the 5 litre twin-turbocharged v8 we're not showcasing the air injection system in the turbo because that's still under patenting mm-hmm well it kind of sits in this area this is still our normal cylinder have that the yes women head will be on the dyno in two months okay so it's slightly different here but it's very very similar but I can show you our new kinetic wall okay so this is a new design for the Jesco where we managed to we many many years ago we played around with titanium connecting rods and that's the lightest we ever had it's it's always a bit of an issue with titanium protect your knowledge you need to coat them and you can have friction issues also we never really got around to using that but here we managed to make a steel connecting rod but none of those issues and none of the fatigue issues that has the same weight and strength as this titanium connecting rod but in steel and the way we've got it so light is just through clever design and if you look at it you probably have never seen a connector rod with this kind of design ID laxity neck so we wrote a little kind of little message on it it is impossible to leave by following therefore I am different but that's kind of fun and this piston here takes the highest cylinder pressure of any piston in any production engine in the world given the five liter and 1600 horsepower you feel the weight of it while in every lesson that's the strongest piston out there it feels like a super light normally aspirated racing piston but again through clever design it's it's extremely strong and capable we make our own lamps here at Koenigsegg we're actually a homologated automotive manufacturer so we had we need to have a little test lab and test equipment for forecasting lamps and then we get certified every year but here we're building the the show car lamps for for the for the YESCO they are very much production intent but they are the first kind of go at it so there are some 3d printed parts here and this will this will most likely be machined aluminium or carbon in the production version and but otherwise it's very very similar so we actually make our own reflectors and put the LEDs in and density signs so small and lightweight yeah very compact lamp I would say so here we have the new Jesco carbon holo carbon fibre wheel design this is a very much optimized shape for weight and strength and we also have our latest generation of carbon fibers in there which can take maximum load and and heat so we could make these wheels the lightest we've ever made even though they are larger than any other wheels we ever made yes so this wheel it's particularly nice yeah so here we have a twelve and a half inch wide twenty-one inch tool and the wheel itself only weighs seven point four kilos yeah in the front we have ten inch wide and 20 20 inch tool and it weighs 5.9 kilos I can't get my head over those numbers and if you see there's it's it's just carbon there no in metal inserts or anything the only metal part is that have disassembled so they're very much pure carbon fiber and hollow so what is amazing all this technology all these hydraulics and aerodynamic features active aerodynamic features still the curb weight is just a touch over 1,400 kilo and that is the kerb weight with all the liquids almost a full tank of fuel so quoting dry weight of course that's like hundred and fifty or hundred and eighty and kilos less it is a very very light car and we're only making hundred and twenty five of them and I said only that's still the highest number of a limited run we've ever made okay what is quite amazing even before anyone has seen the real car we're almost sold out with oh wow ninety down payments on the car before Geneva Motor Show congratulations coming in on a daily basis so we will see house almost sold out or not we are before the show so in terms of production when when would we maybe expect to see yeah so we kind of used the Geneva Motor Show as our as our pulse so this year it's very much a show car I would say 85 90 percent of the components you see or what they will be yeah there are some 3d printer show elements and the gearbox doesn't have all the features and functions in it so it's very much a show car but as with the ring gear when you're going to see the final production version it will be like this most of everything is real so for the Geneva Motor Show 2020 we will have the full real car there Wow and the ambition is to start production at the end of 2020 okay so and then ramped up quickly to a one-week cycle to get them out okay so so 40 to 50 cars per year potentially that's it Wow exciting times it's amazing as well coming and joining you from the first time I ever visited and we take a look around together to see the development the growth and products like this this car is truly spectacular so much I really appreciate that well congratulations in every way and I for one can't wait now to get to know and see this car completed and I've never seen it completed myself yes I can imagine you'd be working on it for years no doubt a couple of years in the making and developing all of these new technologies so thank you very much for showing us around I hope you guys have enjoyed this as well well thank you for coming and see you in Geneva see you there I think it's quite hard to summarize just how much is going on in the ESCO there is so much technology unique things that can exact a developing for the car and obviously this isn't the completed state it needs its wheels that needs some more of the body panels at instant seats but by this point you will no doubt have seen the car fully unveiled at the Motor Show but still retaining features like this having that ability to close the doors using the motors the mirrors unfolding still distinctly in appearance a Koenigsegg but all completely new when you look at you know all these body panels that centre line there's just scale of this front splitter that you have down here this almost tray at the front for the maximum amount of downforce and as Christiane was saying at 250 km/h 880 kilos at 275 kilometres an hour of thousand kilos add some more speed and up maybe fourteen hundred kilos at the top with 1600 horsepower as well this car is well it is a mega car or the one megawatt of power and no doubt I can imagine actually what it would be like to actually drive but all of these new things the smart cluster the smart wheel the new look to the different controls still the infotainment that was introduced for the rig era more space more just more of everything everywhere you look around it anyway what an opportunity to be here to be able to see this the project as it's coming to life ahead of the Motor Show by now though you'll have seen the full car unveiled which at this moment in time I'm very very excited to see myself but I'm going to hopefully throw another video with that coming very very soon on the channel so a big thanks again to Christian for his time to show us around the car today to talk a bit more about it and to get this first look a preview of the brand new Koenigsegg yes co2 thank you very much as always for watching guys I appreciate your support an awful lot and I'll see you again very soon Cheers you
