there's nothing like the feeling you get when you walk into a pro shop looking for a new bowling ball the only problem you have is trying to explain another new bowling ball to your spouse but we'll cover that in another episode when we're discussing how to make your living room couch as comfy as a bed since you're sleeping there for the next week today we're going to talk with a pro shop operator and ask them what questions to ask the next time we drill up a new ball coming up on the art of bowling hi i'm usbc silva certified coach arthur o'connor here at the art of bowling channel we discuss tips tricks and techniques in order for you to improve your bowling game if you haven't already please subscribe to our channel and hit that bell icon so you don't miss another episode of art of bowling i'm standing here today with one of the best pro shop operators in new york city jim lizzo jim could you tell us a little bit about yourself sure i've been coaching since i was like 16 years old i've been a high school coach for about 10 years i've associated with many different colleges we've had many successes and i've been very fortunate to meet a lot of really good bowlers along the way what are some of the important things a customer coming in should ask you about getting their ball drilled well the most important thing is just ask what we are doing today in today's bowling it's always interesting to find out how they bowl so asking them well how fast do you throw the ball how heavy a ball do you think that you need to try to get some input of where they're coming from and then with a little knowledge a little instruction of what we kind of do today in today's industry we can pretty much go together and figure out which ball is needed for a particular customer i find that the information that most bowlers have when they come in is a little lacking and we just need to fill in some of the information that they don't have once they have it all of a sudden the two of us can really get to a good point is there any information that they lack that you see that you're wondering more often than others a question that they should ask well sure um it's always it usually comes down to they want to see the ball move on the lane and they don't understand why or how the ball moves as basic as oil on a lane even that some people are not aware of so learning a little bit about why a ball moves and what it does and what we're trying to do can kind of clarify what they need out of a bowling ball and then from there once again two heads are better than one i find that i can kind of lead them to where they want to go jim a couple of months ago we talked about a situation you had going to nationals and you had a ball drilled um can you share that story with me again well sure it's always interesting when we get to a facility and we need a ball drilled there are many many capable ball drillers i've met so many really good ball drillers as it is when we give them the specs to our hand if we happen to know them the drillers usually do a fantastic job in this one particular case i believe the guy was trying to be really really good and sometimes when you think too much you overdo and in this case he did me fine until he went to the weight hole at the end and drilled it on the wrong side of the ball with that i understood what happened he was very apologetic it was just one of those things where he was trying to be too perfect and no one can ever complain about someone being too perfect he did fix the ball came back the next day and we went on from there but we both had a good laugh on it do you remember how you bowled in that tournament i bowled very well and they both very well with that ball it was really giving me good reactions jim thank you for your help today and i'll see you in a little while about my own ball if you'd like to visit jim's pro shop you can find more info on his pro shop in the description box below some things to know when deciding on a new bowling ball what grit does the ball have coming out of the box and where does the grip fit in your game do you need to change the surface a bowling ball is an investment so treat it as such educate yourself for what you need for your game your pro shop operator is your best ally in helping you look for a guy who watches you ball and takes his time to see how you throw the ball when it comes to this don't shop price go with the best if you have a pro shop operator you trust with your game please be sure to leave a comment below that's all for this week thanks for watching and see you on the lanes hi i'm usbc silver certified coach arthur o'connor thanks for watching and see you on the latest coming up on the art of bowling [Music]
