what is going on everybody I hope you're having a fantastic day today we are back in the 2017 Dodge Challenger 392 Hemi Scott packed shaker because we've got a new mod for the vehicle that we're gonna be doing in today's video so it's nothing major it's nothing crazy or super exciting but we're gonna be installing the El wire which if you haven't seen other videos on it there's a few other youtubers who have made videos on this topic and on this mod but the El wire is essentially this lineup wire that's gonna go in my case it's gonna go around this dashboard over here and around the center console over here but you can actually install this wire anywhere you want it's not even just for this car it's not even just for a car in general give with us in your house you can put this in your RV you can put it wherever you want to stick this wire you can do it as long as the wiring is done properly we're gonna be sticking it into the Dodge Challenger and like I said I'm gonna be putting it around this dashboard area and around the center console because I want it to light up at night when I'm driving down the road because I think that's a pretty cool feature to have and honestly I think Dodge had done this from the beginning out of the manufacturer they should have created this little light that comes inside the vehicle just adds a little bit of ambient light in the vehicle and makes it look a lot cooler so we're gonna be installing that now if you haven't noticed you see I have this red wire already inside the vehicle well that was a mod I did about a year and a half ago and I'll put up a card on the screen right now so you can watch that video if you're interested but I ordered this little red wire that you know it looks really cool and honestly I like the color of this red more than the El wire that we're gonna install but this doesn't light up and so at night it's just the screen and the lights from here but there's nothing down here that really illuminates this area and so that's something I wanted to add to this vehicle that's what we're gonna do with the El wire and I'm probably gonna remove this wire right now because I don't think I can stick both lights into it and even if I can it might be a little weird looking because you have like a red wire and then you'll have the orangish color from the El wire I think it'll look kind of weird so I'm gonna remove this I'm not gonna throw it away I'm gonna keep it just in case I want to reinstall it with the El wire but first up we're gonna remove this wiring over here and then we're gonna start the installation of the El wire now for the El wire you're gonna need a few different things first off you're gonna need a metal coat hanger or something that you can attach the El wire through to feed it through whatever surface you want to in my case like I said I'm gonna feed it through over here and I'm gonna wrap it around but you can use it for a lot of different areas you can put it down over here on the doors and so you might not need this this wire over here this metal hanger wire but if you're feeding it through anywhere it's just a lot easier to have a metal wire that you can feed something through or attach it to and feed it through next up we'll need some scissors because we're going to cut the El wire near the edge or wherever I decide to do that I'm not sure you gonna stick the edge just like I did over here probably in this area but you're gonna need to cut the El wire because the El wire is longer than what we're gonna actually use in today's video next up you'll need some tape that you're gonna use to tape it to this metal coat hanger but that's the only place you're really gonna use that and now this is the stuff that I actually ordered and I'm gonna put the link in the description below but I spent $32 total with tax and shipping from amazon to get this stuff done so let's pull this open so this is actually the El wire itself there we go this is the El wire and as you can see it's more of like an orangish color you might not be able to tell on camera but if you compare this to that it's it's quite different and I'm not sure I love it but I think it's gonna be worth it when it's lighting up at night so that's the main el wire I'm gonna put it like I said a link in description below these are these kind of snap quick snap wire connectors and we're gonna use that to actually wire the light down here near the footwell and so that light is gonna be attached to the steel wire using these quick snap connectors so you're gonna need that and the last thing is and honestly you might be able to actually jerry-rigged this thing and remove the 12-volt lighter over here you can remove that and then the the red and the black wires are there or I ordered my own set that I could plug into and these are just this red and black wire near the tip that's actually what we're gonna connect to these snap wire connectors to the footwell lamp and that's gonna feed all the way into here which is gonna feed around here and it's gonna look awesome so let's get started with removing these red wires right now that I already have on my car now before we get started I want to give a huge shout out to rush shift it's a YouTube channel and it was because I stumbled upon his video that I discovered this thing actually exists and the you know it can be wired correctly into any vehicle he has a Dodge Challenger as well and so I'm doing it the same way he is but thanks to him that's how I stumbled upon this product and that's why I'm doing this video for you guys today so definitely go like share and watch his video if you're interested in a different take on how to install this wiring let's get started [Music] all right so on the first part it's off now on to the second part down here [Music] alright and so this is what the wire looked like we're gonna take it off like I said and we're gonna install this el wire over here because this is gonna light up at night open up the package you'll see there have this this kind of adapter which you can remove this 12 volt adapter and just use the red and black wires or you can get rid of this one entirely and plug this end into that new adapter that I purchased which is right here so either/or I'm gonna start with this one and if it doesn't work or if it's annoying me then I'll just remove this part over here and try to use the original one but I think this will be better because that way I have this as a spare just in case I need it just so you know what it looks like it's got a thick end over here if you can tell on camera then you've got this thin skinny end and that's the end that we're gonna stick into the slot the thin skinny end is the one that's gonna kind of feed right into it and then the thick part is the part the lights out so essentially this is just a fiber optic cable that has a light inside here that lights up so you can use it in a variety of different places and different purposes but in our purpose today's video we're gonna be doing it inside the vehicle but you can put this wherever you want now what we're gonna do is we're gonna make sure that this wire part the part that actually is going to plug into the second product that I purchased we're gonna make sure that it comes out over this end because this other end that's coming over here is going to be cut and so we don't want this end over here because there's nothing that I can really wire it to unless I wire it into like the USB port inside this console but I'm actually gonna wire it to this light here at my foot well and so I'm gonna want to make sure that this end starts over here so that I can wire that second product all the way down into that footwell lighting so just make sure you start with this and where you want it to plug into something because if you did it the other way you're you're gonna be stuck with this wire sticking out somewhere over here so let's start the installation we're going to slowly push this wire in around this section over here and then bring it all the way down again [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] all right so we just pushed in this top portion now like I said I don't love the color it's a little bit orangish so if you're ordering the red yell wire you're gonna want to make sure that you're okay with this orange type of color I think I'll grow on me but for now I'm not loving it but we'll see what it looks like a night but anyways you're gonna have to push it in and some places are a little bit tighter than others and so I just kind of want to go through and double check that everything's in its right spots for the most part I think it fits just as well as my original red wire that was here so now we're just gonna take this end feed it through into here and then out into this area and we're gonna pop this up and try to fit it through over here so let's do that next so we just kind of fed through down here and then it comes out over here and now we're gonna feed it through right up here as well now the way to feed it through over here is you're just gonna kind of pull this part up there's really not much to it there's a few clips I think underneath over here but you're just going to pull it out and they should come out [Music] so now that we have it down here and kind of stuck over here we're gonna see where it's coming out so I'm gonna pull this part open and it should just be using your hands you should be able to pry this thing open so we'll see how that goes and then we're gonna pull it out through the center console using this metal hanger and some tape that should be enough so you just have to pull it out with a little bit of strength and these should clip right back in once you push it down but this gives us a little bit of access over here to be able to grab the wire from underneath inside over here alright so now that we have this part popped out for now we're going to attach the end of the wire if I can find it right here to the metal wire that I have straightened out this is the coat hanger so we're just gonna tape this these two ends so that we could feed it through so let's do that right now [Music] so this is all taped up and ready to be pushed through the center console [Music] [Music] finally passed it through that was probably the hardest step it took me a really long time to get this wire to cooperate and to really actually find it within this center console but we finally got it through so we can actually remove this wire hanger and now just wire the PL wire through the the whole center console [Music] all right so as you can tell I had lay underneath here and around the cupholder section and it's gonna come out over here so let me close this section up and have it come out like right there so this way there's a little Ridge over here and so it's able to sit in there and not get squished by this plastic panel cuz there's a little circular area over here that it can kind of sit in and it doesn't affect the transmission in any way and it doesn't affect the cupholders and that way you can just come up right over here or probably gonna end it right there so now let's just wrap it all the way around [Music] [Music] [Music] you all right so now that we have it wired all around the center console we're gonna do is we're gonna cut it at an angle and insert it right into this slot over here so it's gonna sit flush there's gonna be a little bit of a ridge right here it's not gonna be very noticeable and I think it'll look fine especially because it's closer to the middle of this center console so we're gonna do that next we're gonna need some scissors and I'm gonna cut it at an angle so that they can sit flush with the the pieces coming out of the center console [Music] [Music] all right and there you have it I just inserted it back in there and do a slot and so there's a little bit of a ridge but like I said it's not really gonna be noticeable at night I don't think and this isn't that noticeable an area you're gonna see it a lot more up here and so this part it's gonna be kind of ignored all right so next up we're just gonna pull this light out and there's a little clip over here that if you push it it should come right out what's on this clip right here if you push that in the light will come out we're actually going to wire it to green white wire on the left on the outer side and the black wire on the outside as well so the two wires that are on the left and right side of the light are the ones we're gonna wire to so let's remove this light real quick there you go just like that just a little clip that you use to remove this wire I pull this wiring out a little bit but you see this little white and green wire and this outermost black wire those are the two we're going to snap in using our connector now the red is the positive the black is the negative and we're just gonna match the the red with the white back there and then the black with the black back here as well so that's the positive to positive negative to negative again to reiterate we're going to connect it to this white wire on the left and the outermost black wire on the right all right full disclosure I did not actually use these quick splice snap connectors that I had introduced in the beginning of the video mainly because they were garbage they did not work so I ended up having to hardwire the the wires from the El wire connector all the way directly into this light socket and the way I did that was I simply stripped some of the insulation from the light socket wires using you know one of these light electrical kits you can find them at any store but you can easily split and strip off the wires by you know finding out what gauge and then stripping it off you guys I'm sure have seen something like this before but I used that to strip some of this white and black insulation off of his wires and I simply connected the red and black wire from this little adapter over here from the El wire directly to the copper wiring from the light connector and that way I was able to get a solid connection and it was actually working and you can actually hear I don't know if you can hear on camera but you can hear there is something flowing through here because it makes a small little noise when there's electricity flowing through and I was never able to get that with this and honestly just caused probably an hour to maybe even more I hate to admit of frustration trying to figure out what wasn't working whether that was this whether that was you know me not using the correct wires or whether that was this block and so I remember in the beginning of the video I mentioned that I purchased a second block from you know a different retailer that was supposed to hook up to the El wire and that way I could keep the original el wire you know this little block that came with the ly originally I could keep that separate because that one came with like a 12 volt adapter at the end well through this frustration that I was trying to figure out why it wasn't working I ended up scrapping that one and I'm probably gonna return it and I ended up using the original harness that came with the El wire so as you can see I've actually got this is what goes to the 12 volt adapter that would plug into like my 12 volt or my cigarette lighter or whatnot I had to take that apart and pull the original wires out so that I could get and make sure that this was not the problem that it wasn't because of this that my electricity or that the lights were not working and I double checked because I plugged this with the original 12 volt into you know my 12 volt adapter and the lights were lit up and so I knew that that wasn't a problem I knew that it had to do something with this connection which ultimately it was because of this piece of crap over here so I would not recommend using this did not work I know some other youtubers have you know managed to make it work and it works seamlessly and easy but that did not work for me so I would not order these and I would just simply try to do it yourself by hardwiring it go directly into the wires from the light harness and you can just use that like I said use one of these instruments you know remove some of the insulation and then tape it around using some electrical tape which actually comes in one of these sets but use some electrical tape that makes it a lot better of a connection and I'm certain that we have power because I checked it just a few minutes ago and I can also hear it from here so let's put this back into its slot let's hook up the light back into this connector over here because I removed the light if you recall I'm gonna plug it back in let's take it back into here I'm probably gonna feed this just underneath the dashboard over here the footwell and that way it's going to be out of the way I don't want it hanging like this like it is now so we're going to do that we're gonna plug it in this edge all the way up to here this edge over here and then we're gonna kind of show you what the finished product looks like [Music] all right so now we got everything closed up down here everything is good we've got it connected right over here so you get this connector and as you can see the lights already glowing so let's get into a dark place so that you can see the light in all its glory all right so without further ado this is what the e el wire looks like in my Dodge Challenger [Music] all right so the question is was this mod worth the 32 or so dollars that I spent the answer is yes and no so honestly you can spend probably closer to twenty dollars because all you really need is the e l wire I would not purchase these stupid quick snap connectors because they do not work even though I know there are other YouTube videos that show that they do they did not work for me I would not purchase this it's garbage I would also not really need to purchase this because I ended up going with the adapter that came with the e l wire that had the 12 volt adapter in the end so I just had to unscrew it and pull out the wires so unless you want to different types of adapters one that you can hard plug right into the 12 volt adapter and one that you can plug directly into the footwell lighting I would just stick with the one that comes with the e l wire and not order this but this is an option for you if you need it so those are two things I would not order so overall you could probably get this thing done in like twenty dollars but the question is is it worth twenty dollars and the answer is still yes and no yes it's worth the twenty dollars that you spend no it's not worth the time that I have put in to get this thing installed I'm not gonna lie it took me probably five or six hours just to get this thing to work and that's primarily spent on the wiring the wiring is not hard there's two wires and you're supposed to connect to them but what I was stuck with was figuring out why it wasn't working because I was using those quick snap connectors and I was not getting any electricity flowing through the Yale wire and so honestly that took the longest part it was also kind of difficult getting the coat hanger through the center console over here because it was very difficult to feed it through that mission tunnel that took a little bit longer than I wanted and overall it's not an easy project to do I would rate an intermediate to maybe closer to difficult for me it was difficult because I was working with things that weren't working for me but now that you know this information it's probably more of an intermediate type of job and like I said I would recommend just hardwiring it directly to the faux wall lighting rather than using any type of adapter because that way you can be sure that electricity is flowing through the e-l wire and you're not wasting your time that's the biggest problem that I face so this project was wasting my time other than that actually inserting it into the slots that's easy feeding it through that's pretty easy so the hardest part for me was electrical and it almost made it that it was was not worth doing this project and I would not do this project again but now that it's done and since I was like 95% there I had to finish it so now that it's done it's good I enjoy it I think it looks awesome and beautiful but just be warned that it's worth the $20 but it may not be worth your time if you're looking to spend you know four or five hours on this project and maybe you can do a quicker but I'm just warning you ahead of time thank you guys so much for watching today's video be sure to like share and subscribe if you enjoy the content and don't forget to find me on instagram at Swasey underscore where i post cool photos of this car and I'll post cool photos of this e-l wire so stay tuned for that take care and have a wonderful day
