so you just bought a new toyota well the first order of business is congratulations welcome to the car carella channel my name is amd i am a toyota master diagnostic technician and in this video i'm going to go over some things that you should never do to your brand new toyota that you just bought we're going to cover some items that i consistently see people not take care of that you should know about but before we get started if you're new to the channel welcome consider subscribing to the channel check out some of my other videos if you're a returning subscriber thank you so much for watching another one of my videos and without further ado let's dig into it break in period now most people are thinking that breaking periods are something of the past you know these cars are very high tech they're very well engineered things have changed high tolerances that we don't need a breaking period just get the car from the dealership with one mile and do whatever we want with it just like it has 50 60 000 miles folks that is not the case no toyotas they still have a break-in period and things specific things that you need to be aware of so let's go over some of these things first item is on the break-in period time is avoid sudden stops or hard braking up to 200 miles and the reason for that is you're trying to break in your brakes make sure that everything is working correctly you you want to try to avoid these hard brakes to preserve the brake pads to preserve the rotors and extend the life of the brakes over your ownership of the car this actually by the way applies even when you put new brakes new brake pads and new rotors wouldn't hurt it's a really good recommendation to avoid issues because remember the warranty on your brakes for vibration for things of that nature noise is not very long so you want to keep an eye on this one the second item is on the list is the engine now engine break-ins some people especially the old-school drivers they know about this from old days and they still follow it but i'm trying to bring your attention to what happened with new cars what is the break-in period well with new toyotas the break-in period is 500 to 1000 miles some cars will be 500 some cars will be 600 sometimes would be a thousand and let me just make this instead of being a gray area let's make it black and white for the first thousand miles avoid the following avoid hard acceleration avoid driving for a very long time in a low gear especially if you have a manual transmission that's something you need to be aware of and avoid very high speeds at highway we're talking 65 70 80 and above you don't want to be driving 95 100 miles an hour on your brand new car because it's fast it's new you're happy with it another very important thing is avoid driving at higher rpm or higher speeds highway speeds if you would for extended periods of time like don't buy your car from the dealership and go on a six-hour road trip right away that is not good for the engine and this all the all these items relate to the engine the engine braking you want your piston rings to seat you want everything to kind of wear its initial wear from new that's a very good idea to do that because we have seen some issues with metal debris from excessive wear on these engines from day one now are you going to have a problem right away you're not folks everything will be fine you won't have any issues but after five six seven eight years especially if you're keeping this car long and you're trying to take care of it that's when the issues will show in premature wear and unneeded stress on this new engine that you're trying to make last 10 15 20 years 200 300 000 miles you start this from day one you start taking care of this properly from day one this engine will have no issues lasting that long another thing is if you have a truck or a suv or a car that is capable of towing do not tow with the car the first 500 miles this is for the transmission this is also for the engine towing puts load on the car however these cars are designed for it so it's not an issue however avoid towing at all the first 500 miles so you wouldn't have any issues the idea of the break-in is and you notice excessive speed high rpm hard acceleration you're trying to avoid high engine rpm that's what's not good for the engine and what's also not good is consistent rpm like you're always at 3000 rpm for hours and hours and hours that's why avoid taking long trips with your brand new car if you plan to keep it for long and have no issues let's talk about oil changes following the break-in now the older cars used to do an oil change or a thousand miles followed by the next interval and then on at the correct interval that the manual recommends while new cars they don't really specify that but here's a piece of advice for you i highly recommend if you're planning to keep this car don't be wasting your money if you're only keeping this car five six years and then on to the next one but if you're taking this car that two three four hundred thousand miles and you're definitely keeping it for 10 15 20 years oil changes are cheap folks i would highly recommend after you finish that break-in period of the engine the thousand miles after following all the stuff we talked about do an oil change it wouldn't hurt i have seen new cars where they come in for their first oil change at 10 000 miles and they have some very slight metal shavings in the oil filter that is not a problem but i don't i don't know how i feel about that those metal shavings all over the engine and then you drove 10 000 miles on them hopefully it doesn't cause an issue but would you like to be say hopefully i don't have an issue or would you like to take care of it from day one and one thing i want to bring your attention what's going to happen after this thousand miles the first oil change is very important for any new engine this is extremely important the slightest debris that was from manufacturing from even if you just rebuilt the engine there's gonna be some debris it it's it's very small debris where it's not going to cause immediate problems but you want that debris to be washed away by the oil come down to the oil pan and come out when you do an oil change so folks toyota does recommend 10 000 miles with most of their cars today in one year but i will tell you this oil is cheap 10 000 miles so there's a lot of conditions for you actually to go that 10 000 miles so i would be careful start reading that maintenance guide of your car because severe normal service towing there's a lot of conditions that would switch you immediately back to 5000 mile oil changes so be careful of that and if you want to navigate around the gray areas make things black and white nice and simple just do your oil change every five thousand miles six months and you will not have issues you will actually have you will see people other people have issues with oil consumption you will hear horror stories of engines causing issues and folks is very simple oil causes so much harm to our engines yet it's the most simple and the cheapest maintenance on any car so why not do it a little bit earlier and not push it to the limit with the 10 000 mile oil change but i'll leave that one that one up to you one more thing about oil changes that i'd like to bring your attention to which is very important this kind of falls on the dealership or the service center that's servicing these cars now most toyotas sold in the us and some other parts of the world they come with free maintenance the first two years whatever the case may be depending on the area well the first service at 5 000 miles is going to be a simple tire rotation general inspection at 10 000 miles it's going to be an oil change tire rotation brake inspection just make sure everything is good which really most of the time they are i mean it's a toyota with 5 10 000 miles that's nothing well here's just the typical scenario where things go south let's say your first service the light came on you went for your service well some people will know that it's a tire rotation they'll be like ah i don't have time i'm busy let's stretch it a little bit or life got the better of you you showed up at 7 000 miles to do the first service which is supposed to happen in 5 000 miles i'll tell you it's not a big deal tire rotation yeah it's nice to keep your schedule on but it's not an oil change it's okay let's let it go but then here's what happens you go at 7000 miles you do your first service the person who does these free maintenances most dealerships will hire the junior mechanic the one that's just starting out in the business folks it's very simple maintenance anybody can rotate tires anybody can do an oil change it's not it doesn't require skills and knowledge and education it's very simple that's where junior mechanics start well the junior mechanic will do the tire rotation check all the fluids check everything do everything perfectly but then they're going to walk to the machine that creates the stickers the sticker the oil change sticker that you put on your window the dealerships put and you guys follow well the machine is you put the current miles you hit print it's going to add 5 000 miles to that and it's going to print a sticker things get tactics at dealerships so uh the people these guys junior mechanics they don't pay attention to the sticker it's just the is not a big deal right well it is because now you went to 7 000 miles the next service now went to 12 000 miles put the sticker on the window reset the maintenance light well the maintenance slide also goes 5 000 miles so now you're not paying attention because we're busy with life we're not tracing every little mile on the car now this doesn't apply to everybody some people are very punctual about that but you went 12 000 miles on your first oil change remember i just told you a thousand miles would be nice you just went 12 000 miles on your first oil change and this repeats and repeats and repeats and typically i get cars with the second oil change in their life with 25 to 27 000 miles seven thousand miles overdue that's almost an entire oil change missing this is a very bad start to a very reliable car and you do not want to be that person folks that's why i'm telling you this look you can yell at the dealership you can do all that but ultimately it is your car you're responsible to take care of it and it doesn't hurt it's even numbers every 5 000 miles i actually recommend you get an oil change like we talked about that's up to you but if you're going to go the 10 000 it has to be exactly at 10 000 because you're already pushing the envelope here not oh we'll go a little bit over 10 stick to 10 000 miles exactly or actually a little less before you reach 10 000 get that oil change folks the oil i drain out of new cars at 10 000 miles doesn't look very pretty it looks horrible so don't stretch it past 10 000 miles don't overfill your gas tank with fuel and i say that and people will jump up and say who does that like why would i do that to my new car well i'll tell you the common scenario that we see all the time over and over and over it's always new cars you traded in your 1999 tahoe the giant 25 gallon tank for example don't quote me on that number and you bought a small corolla hybrid because you wanted to be efficient you wanted something different your needs have changed whatever the case may be well you go to fill up that car it only takes 10 gallons 11 gallons maybe and you're like wait a minute my car is not full let's keep adding fuel because something is not right now most people will say of course it's a smaller car common sense dictates that it's going to have a smaller gas tank but you would not believe how many people actually fall for this one folks you open your owner's manual you go searching through it and you find the gas tank capacity let's say for example it said 15 gallons your light is on you go fill up your p most people expect okay so i'll go 14 gallons no with toyota that is not the case toyotas usually leave a pretty healthy reserve at the end when the light actually comes on that's just the way they are so with your new car no surprises put the pump on from the gas station when it clicks we're done that's it no more no more pushing more gas in and if you want to know what kind of damage happens when you overfill your gas tank i'll leave a video right here where i went into this in extreme detail so you really know what happens behind the behind the scenes when you overfill your tank what kind of damage check your tire pressure on your new toyota and people ask wait a minute i just bought the car they should have checked that well before i answer that let me take you in the order of how cars arrive at the dealership and what happens between when the car comes out of the factory till the moment you take delivery of it the car comes on a big hauler coming from the factory it's all covered it has a lot of systems disabled in some cases a mechanic like me gets the car preps everything make sure everything is working make sure everything is perfect 100 then the car goes on the lot on the lot some cars don't even sit for a day if they're pre-sold some cars sit for a few weeks then they're sold off but some of them sit for a few months maybe a month maybe two maybe three if those three months let's say up to three months happen to be in in a climate change well i set the pressures of the correct inflation when the car was with me i set it up i we put it on the lot the weather changed well air expands and contracts with with temperature change so when you take delivery of the car some dealerships will go over and recheck the tire pressure and recheck everything like a almost a day of delivery check but with new cars and with hundreds and hundreds of cars on the lot that is sometimes not feasible and especially when things are happening in a hurry you've seen the day of buying a car you're test driving and you're checking you're doing it they're trying to get you out in as short time as possible so you wouldn't be there for hours and hours so sometimes that is missed and they with the introduction of tire pressure lights people thought okay well the tire line's not on tires are good well they could still be a little lower than you would want them to be so it wouldn't hurt i actually encourage you to buy yourself one of those small tire gauges throw in the glove box check the tire pressure if it's slow either adjust it yourself or just take it back to the dealership you just spend a small fortune this is your second biggest investment in your life take it back have them check the pressures real quick life is good but don't go driving on those low tires until the light comes on because it's a new car it's new tires you're trying to push things to last as much as possible let's talk about some day of delivery items and things you need to do before you take delivery of the car and people often forget them and then they get themselves in these odd situations where things are not playing in your favor first one is before you take delivery of the car and actually before you sign the papers for the car i highly recommend that you do a visual inspection of the body of the car look folks dealerships they have hundreds of cars used cars new cars different models customer cars company cars they have cars everywhere everybody's been to a dealership there's at least two three four hundred cars in the lot on every given day so it is unrealistic that all these cars get checked periodically it's just not realistic and not everybody even the best sales departments it's not realistic that they're checking every single car every single day because otherwise they would have no time to attend you when you walk in the dealership so here is what i recommend to you before you sign the paperwork for the car do a visual inspection walk around the car make sure there's no smoke we're not talking about damage and accident we're talking about tiny little scratches walk around the car make sure you have no scratches you have no little dings from door dings whatever the case may be before you sign the papers because if you have something that is big you could ask the dealership hey what's going on there if they tell you oh we'll fix it we'll send it to a body shop you might not be comfortable with that some people will you could negotiate price whatever the case may be but they're not trying to sell you a lemon here or a car that's been damaged they might not even know about it as well hundreds of cars in the lot walk around the car before you sign paperwork and then after you sign the paperwork do a quick walk around as well everybody is in their highest emotions when they're buying a car and they're handed the key and the salesman is trying to show you all the cool features of the car trying to pair your phone and there's all that frenzy and i see people's faces when that happens i don't deliver cars i'm a mechanic but i'm sometimes called when there's an issue with pairing with something with the phone so i see their faces they're lit up they're very happy and nervous and all of a sudden that buyer's remorse comes in oh my god i just spent a lot of money in this car it's okay take a deep breath then and walk around the car one more time before you drive off the minute you drive off you go home you're very happy you park your car in the garage then you look there's a tiny little scratch the dealership and all that's right will tell you we have no record that this happened here you took the car if you parked it at a parking lot and you stopped by or gas station that's crash could have happened there and then you enter the battle of you versus me and let's why if you check the car before you take it whatever happens after that happened after you took delivery of it and then there's no room for error in that another day of delivery item that you need to be aware of is look folks when we buy a new car we're driving home let's say it's a five mile drive we do our best to make it a 50 mile drive home because we take the longest route because we're trying to drive the car we can't get enough of it and of course that's the joy of buying a new car but folks end up with this situation they drive the car along now it's fully warmed up everything is at operating temperature you go in your garage because of course you're going to park your newly purchased car in your garage and you're going to be looking at it inside the garage and just celebrating that joyous moment but then when you park in your garage it's like wait a minute why does my whole garage smell like a burning smell that is completely normal folks and i know it's annoying but it's a car made by humans people when they're assembling the cars fingerprints and oils from hands and all that stuff finds its way around the engine around the exhaust and it won't burn off that easy when you're just test driving it in short periods around the dealership but when you drive it that first long drive you're going to get a little bit of a burning smell that is completely normal there's nothing to worry about i would give that burning spell two three days of normal driving it'll completely go away and you'll never smell it again i just thought i'd bring this to your attention because this also brings a lot of people very worried with their new cars and then by the time they bring it to the dealership the smell is actually gone so it's trying to save you a trip to the dealership for nothing and last but not least most toyota dealerships when you buy a new car and actually that's how they come from the factory will put the owner's manual in the glove box folks a small advice the owner's manuals on for these newer cars they're getting bigger and bigger and they take more space and they end up in some cases taking the whole glovebox space why don't you just take that owner's manual if you're worried about it getting damaged put in a very large zip tie zip lock bag throw it in the back by the spare tire that way it's not taking your valuable storage space and you're always shuffling around it and it's just getting getting worn out just from being thrown around up and down left and right throw it in the back where it's safe it's there if you need it an emergency but it's not in your way just a little piece of advice because i see people struggle with with glove box space because of that big bulky owner's manual in there and folks i'll say this one more time congratulations on your new toyota purchase i hope this car lasts you for a very long time and you have zero issue with it living up to its legendary reputation of reliability i hope this video was helpful i hope
