wow okay now we got the Beast some people say fishing is boring and it just takes too long so today our goal is to catch all the fish in this Lake in just a few hours netting a lake is a much more complicated process than you'd think but over the next few days I was going to muck in and help with this exciting task on the promise that I'd get to meet loads of fish and some unusual species too to be honest it's been a tough Old Winter and my personal fishing hasn't really gone that well in fact I've pretty much forgotten what a fish looks like but today we're catching all of them well that's if I could actually find the place I was already running late and what were the chances of there being two lakes that looked the same and had the same name thankfully the other Reservoir where we're supposed to be is 3 minutes away okay this looks a little bit more like it morning nice to meet you YouTube thank you these guys are the experts when it comes to netting large and small lakes and I was excited to learn how they do it step one you need a really big net and it looks like they've got more than one in fact Andrew the guy in charge of the netting said he had over a, meters of Nets with him can I help in any way or am I just a Nuance no no you can do whatever you want like obviously later we'll get if you got waiters cuz we wanted to get some catch hold andish you can probably tell why I was here I just wanted to hold a load of fish but the owner had brought these guys in to do a stock analysis checking the health of the fish but also to remove some species to make space for the prized CP to grow bigger and improve the fishing for the paying Anglers so you're joining the Nets together so that you can have one really long net so yeah you join them all together to make one gigantic net you take out the whole of water in one Andrew began shooting the net the term given to deploying the net around the perimeter of the lake too close to the edge and it might snag on branches and debris too far and some fish could be missed so the two guys are jumping in the water and splashing around and stuff because they're trying to scare the fish into the middle of the lake to get them away from the reads and stuff it kind of looked like fun so naturally I wanted to help out I have just the device you going to go and help yeah oh yeah off you go but Carl the the Net's already out there you need to run around to the other side if you actually want to help I'm on the other side now no no that's not quite what I meant either mate due to my significant contribution and effort the net had been successfully laid out however now came the tough bit pulling it back in takes strength and patience I did begin to wonder would we really catch all of the fish quite keep cling the read some will come out some will stay everyone thinks they'll just swim out but quite often they just swim around you basically there we are the net is almost in a full circle around this entire Lake the guys were just trying their absolute best to scare those fish into the middle get them away from the reads and stuff can I be of use it's quite nice it's um it's quite down here okay just sit right there basically we had to go slow as if you pull in the net too quick a whole heap of problems can arise although I'm not sure I could go fast even if I wanted to so the net was seriously heavy oh it's really what why is it suddenly got really heavy okay let's oh there we go yeah oh yeah that muscle honestly right so it seems like we're just yanking on this thing and hoping for the best but what is actually going on um like I say every lake is different this one lends itself to the shape it's fairly fairly standard there an irrigation R well really but um we've shot up the entire perimeter and we're trying to keep it wide at the moment so we're going to land it where the boys are over there with the other net that's where it's going to pull together that's right yeah so they're bringing that side in and initially um it's about keep can you keep pulling it please Sor about getting it off the margins so when it comes off the margins you know you're limiting hopefully what debris is going to be in the edges also by pulling in slow and at the same rate on both sides it kept the shape of the net nice and wide avoiding it pinching up too tightly in the middle which could potentially scare the fish this wouldn't matter so much once it was closer in but if enough stressed fish Gather in one spot whilst the net was this wide they could easily push under it and escape to be totally honest it's been a long while since I saw a fish so I just want to just want to hold one twoo or cuddle them or wrestle them I don't know bit of bit of all those things that's a job the net isn't even in on this Lake yet and I'm looking forward to tomorrow the grass car he said tomorrow's Lake's got like seriously big ones anyway focus on the job in hand we have the net maybe halfway in where those floats just started pulling under that's because the leads on the bottom like the bottom of the net is potentially snagged on something and as soon as those floats start dipping down you know you might have to do something about it is it pinged off yeah okay yeah they're good one unfortunate snag at the end of The netting could render the whole morning's effort useless so I could understand why now that the net was almost in the team had gone a little quiet only when it starts sort of shrinking down and becoming a bit smaller do you start thinking they're coming towards us all those fish are on their way in thankfully the guys had successfully avoided the snags and the net was in but this was a relatively Simple Lake compared to what was to come the following day when we'd be netting a far larger ancient estate lake with a couple of potential record breaking grass carp in it would be interesting for sure but first I had some fish to say hello to are you ready oh my gosh it's huge I'm sorry Tom but that's absolutely massive see a big girl that was massive oh this is literally my [Music] dream my GoPro are wet but look they're looking really good well there you go another that's nice fully scaled M that's a beast oh I'd love to catch that one I mean I guess we have caught that one all right all right all right all right stunning fish 37 oh come on found to get wet [Music] nice scales with the carp checked and put back in the lake it was time for the real work to begin starting by removing all of the smaller species earlier in the year I did a match fishing campaign and I think today I've won the match now roach are a bit of a undervalued fish in my opinion that is an incredible species and they grow very slowly they live quite a long time but in the UK they just been decimated by Corrs and the fact that we've even caught this many roaches is actually quite a good sign that they haven't all been eaten by the Predators removing the roach would allow the carp in this Lake to grow even bigger but before we could relocate them we needed to net the stock bond to there were rumors of monsters living [Music] below I had a question go CR my legs but it's suddenly just hit me in the M got Andrew on the bond go [Music] all of them look kind of exciting cuz they don't really know what's in [Music] here like this is the stressful bit is there anything in here hope so it's coming all right look Tom we caugh spider catch it today P up real tight sir wow something about catfish man they're so eery oh mate it's enormous the cats were being relocated to a holding Pond ready to be sold at a later date but we also caught some small Commons and mirrors which were added to the main carp Lake I was excited to release them into their new home but even more hyped to go and wrestle with some catfish thank you well hello guys amazing there's so much variation in the colors there's a catfish which has been living in clearer water farewell buddy however this guy has been living in very murky water not getting a lot of light on his skin it's almost white wo okay okay man oh no yeah he's gone W okay now we got the Beast the Beast that is an amazing creature a true like apex predator cuz in here any little fish is going down on that guy's throat well that was a good laugh but tomorrow there's fish even bigger than that huge long silver Torpedoes I can't [Music] wait the guys are loading up the nets for day two of netting this Lake totally different today a giant ancient an older State Lake which actually to my knowledge contains some of the biggest grass car in the whole country like maybe even a record fish well jacket you think get a cold oh thank you I work for AE Fisheries now have you got a license for that net mate here we've been tasked by the lake owners with removing the stocks of large tench due to the fact that the water was being run as a carp fishery and removing them would leave more space for the current carp stocks to grow further personally I love a mixed fishery and I think it adds a lot to your fishing but when you're selling tickets and running a cart fishing business I can see where they're coming from due to the size and complexity of this Lake we were going to have to net it three times in different areas there were just too many snags and of course the island to contend with that would prevent us from netting it all at once and importantly this was the best way of hopefully getting to hold one of the giant grass car along the way this is the bit where being strong is really necessary oh look he's doing another one to stop the fish being able to move around the three different zones Andrew was putting a blocking net in between our nettings this would prevent us from Catching the same fish twice and ensure we didn't lose too many fish around the back of our Nets do you want a hand pulling anything can do mate if you want what bit is most helpful yeah go help give a support nor we do is get a bit of Stu floats here yeah I come uhhuh and then uh yeah we pretty much just bit of a synchronized ping yeah I'll pull at the same time as [Music] you I'm doing the important work here oh little snag for us as well yeah I'll get that off lead line just got caught down there was it tree stump yeah Tre St we were never going to just pull it out so we obviously you got to go out there and lift the lead line just pop it over the top of that snag so we can get the net moving again thankfully it was right in the edge so it probably didn't lose any fish I feels like a pull up but the thing is is when you don't pull nothing [Music] happens oh there we are the guys have just basically closed the net on maybe a third of the lake yeah this lake is really beautiful and obviously has probably a lot more history than where we were yesterday but that comes with detritus on the bottom of the lake all of these twigs and branches are clogging up and there they're making it more and more likely for these fish to escape so it's a more timec consuming job let's hope it pays off oh we've got one already once again straight in with the First Catch of the Day this one a little perch the atmosphere on this Lake was definitely different different and I for one was a little nervous as the net Drew close it seemed to be coming in okay until I saw Andrew running for the boat so how do you tell where you're snugged normally it crect an angle so if it's on a an obvious one then there'll be an angle so instead of it being a nice curve it will be um it will start to have more an angle as you pulling it onto the snag if you if you pull it onto a snag and you don't notice too quickly then you've got you got to you got to take it off and quite often you rip it in sections like this cuz it's quite a narrowish lake then one bad snag can ruin the whole sweep turns out there was no snag the guys just weren't pulling hard enough point out who said it was snake to begin with it wasn't me it was me interesting I think he just wanted to get in the boat yeah I think he wanted to take you for a little boat ride show you over the back of the net really the net came in Snag free and inside was a handful of beautiful big tench and the odd quality perch too but sadly no signs of any grass C the best Hench session of my life it was nice however just to see how vibrantly alive this Lake was and clearly in a very healthy State as shown by the size of all these fish it gave me a little bit of hope that the grass C was still in here just somewhere else on the lake [Music] I'm still just hoping that we actually get to see one of these grass C because realistically a 40 plus grass carp is is actually like that long and we didn't get any up there we're about to do this area up to the island and if this fails we've got one more attempt at the end it was time for me to level up my skills I'd helped pull the net in a little but I wanted to better understand the rest of the process so this is the weighted Y and my foot is going to go on top of it and push against the bottom yeah so always under your foot and always teing de and then you should be able to feel you're actually doing a bit of pulling yourself I'm doing the I'm doing the some technical stuff now what's the most bizarre thing you've ever found dragged up a human leg oh no Andrew's saying the Net's very heavy at the minute it's really hard to pull we're just hoping it's not just weeds and silk and instead it's masses of fish I do wonder what's in there the in there honest it came in lovely but there isn't frustratingly there were still no signs of the grass car just the odd perch and more tench which In fairness meant the day was a success as it was tench that we've been asked to remove but I could tell from the look on Andrew's face that he was disappointed we all want wanted to see one of the big grasses and had just one more chance to do so it's probably every Fisherman's dream to own a lake or like have a fishery of their own and I've had that since I was a kid like real big goal of mine is one day to to have have my own Lake but I I think the owning of a lake is a bit boring it's just just a lake but the idea that you can manage it improve it work on the habitat grow certain plants introduce measures and stock control like what we're doing today to make it better and healthier and more vibrant alive and productive and a better Lake to fish in the future the whole process is is huge there's so much to learn the water up past the island was the most overgrown with many overhanging trees it made sense that the fish would want to be up here but it also meant there was a lot of work to try and scare them out into the Open Water I just can't believe I keep blanking we all mucked in as Andrew shot the net until finally it was time to try and Pull It in oh grassy then oh okay there are fish in here looks like there's rain on the horizon the Net's tightening once again and this is it we see one of these giant grass car right now or we don't we were down to the final moments of the last sweep but there was a problem somehow a wooden pallet had found its way to the bottom of the lake which the net had got snagged up on there was a chance that this had enabled some fish to escape but we'd got what we' got we' only find out by finishing the job oh goly they're coming at us yeah I saw that one oh hello he's he's going for you oh this is exciting hey I'm nervous that looks like a hey we got one that looks like a when we started with that net across there what's left in the net I bet is 15% of what's down this end of the lake if if that holy macaroni that is what we came for Third Time Lucky down in the end with all the snags that was where the big grass cart was lurking check that out and they're really old you know they've been in here a a long time ancient fish really are yeah so long and impressive just like me
