power doesn't measure a man nor does it corrupt the man power reveals when someone achieves the power that they've always wanted their true intentions are always revealed the devil hunter Nero [Music] I probably should have changed Nero's title from the devil hunter to the 25 year old you know the thing all of y'all continue to remind me of in the comments section of my first Devil May Cry video to this day nah but you guys corrected me in a very polite and respectful manner so I can't really be mad just wanted to point it out anyways if you have not done so already I suggest watching my analysis on Virgil before watching this video almost everything we covered with Virgil can be applied to Nero as well so I don't want to waste time repeating the same stuff don't play yourself go watch it it's a good video ironically enough Nero is incredibly similar to his father without ever even meeting him while growing up Nero and Virgil both have an immense desire for power and just like Virgil Nero's drive to become powerful is also rooted in feelings of inferiority it's kind of crazy how that happens huh Virgil had a way more of an influence over his child than expected without ever being present despite the similarities however there is still something that separates Nero from Virgil something that makes Nero's desire for power much more subtle than his father's after all he's not going around tearing the limbs off of family members or setting loose ancient demonic trees so what is it that separates Nero's character from that of his father's before we answer that let's review Nero's desire for power because I believe it is necessary to distinguish how that desire manifests like I said earlier Nero and Virgil both have a desire for power and it's made evident throughout the series the most significant example being when Nero first awakened to his discount devil trigger during this moment he accepted the call to his demonic side and all of the power it granted him regardless of the exile it could bring [Music] [Music] what makes this a meaningful moment is the location in which this is all taking place fortuna an isolated island with a city that is governed by a militant religion who preached the eradication of demons although the true purpose of the religious order turned out to be more insidious than what they let on its message of demons being an evil that needs to be eradicated resonated with the citizens so much so that 99% of the population are devoted to this religion Nero is probably legitimately the 1% who isn't devoted I think having its leaders almost kill you on several occasions is reason enough to question the faith but back to my point Nero grew up as an orphan in this city with adopted parents that were also devoted followers with the woman he loves as well as her brother are also active members of this faith the overwhelming presence of this religion throughout his life is why Nero tries his best to hide his arm which is just a full-out demon beacon he even tries to hide it from Nico when they first met the best Devil May Cry waifu all of y'all voted wrong nero may not care at all for the religion but he understands fully the relationship between demons and his home and what the consequences would be if the people around him found out that he carried demonic energy therefore for him to fully accept becoming more demonic despite his home demonstrates his resolve for gaining power he is willing to become the thing that quite literally everyone around him is afraid of the most there are also more minor moments like his regular dialog within the games I've got all the power I need right here you you okay there brewski you're looking a little off there big guy clearly Nero has some sort of fixation on the idea of having power he's nowhere near as obsessed with it as his father but it clearly has had influence over him this comes from his own legitimate feelings of inferiority now although this is something Nero shares of Virgil there is something different about these feelings that is worth mentioning while Virgil views himself as a superior being to others to avoid these feelings Nero actually believes in his inferiority I just don't think he's entirely aware of it Nero beats himself up harshly for feeling powerless to prevent the events that have unfolded around him such as Curie a being put at risk of dying after getting kidnapped and credos death at the hands of Sanctus it would make sense that he's hard on himself because of his feelings of inferiority he does not want to feel as if he is powerless and having these events happen around him only serves to reinforce the idea that he is powerless Nero needs that validation of his strength which I believe is one of his motivations for his adventure throughout Devil May Cry 5 of course there is the plot to get revenge for his arm but the moment he lost his arm was also a moment of helplessness Virgil torn eros arm off with his bare hands like Nero was nothing but a doll to him and he was left to pass out from the pain in a pool of his own blood from that point on Nero had a permanent reminder that he is powerless or at least it was permanent until the end of the game but we'll get to that someone like Virgil who has a superiority complex to deal with his inferiority we'll have no need for validation from the people around him he already believes he's strong and will only feel the need to prove himself against the people he thinks are worth his time aka Dante someone like Nero who may actually believe in his inferiority will take any opportunity to prove to himself that he isn't dead weight and that is where his relationship with Dante comes into play despite as much of a meme as it's become being called dead weight is very significant to Nero not only does this trigger his already existing feelings of inferiority but it's also coming from the man who since they're meeting in Devil May Cry 4 has taken on a mentor like position in Nero's life even though he can be a bit of a punk sometimes there is no doubt that Nero respects Dante and Dante respects him back even going as far as to give Nero his own knee on Devil May Cry Side essentially acknowledging Nero strength and giving him his blessings to establish his own a Devil May Cry business my people that's the most durable thing I've seen so to hear dante call him deadweight is absolutely devastating to nero because it reinforces the idea of him being powerless being inferior and this was directly after virgil had done the same virgil hurt Nero's ego physically dante hurt Nero's ego emotionally thus giving him even more motivation to fight eurozone after all what other motivation was there because it's his job to hunt demons maybe but that's also Dante's job he even remarks at the beginning of the game that he doesn't know why he's needed if Dante is already on the job what am i doing wasting my time here he's got this because of revenge for stealing his arm again what I'm saying is that deep down he also wants revenge for being made to feel powerless just like how Virgil was made to feel powerless as a child against the demons that killed his family therefore Nero's adventure throughout Devil May Cry 5 has been an opportunity to prove two euros in Dante and most importantly himself that he is powerful now I've been talking a lot about these feelings of inferiority that Nero has but I've yet to discuss how they were developed these feelings are pretty much the main motivation behind his actions but why are they present to begin with well Nero has a ripe setup for developing inferiority just like his daddy the prequel novel to Devil May Cry 4 offers us details about Nero's origins and there we come to learn that Nero has had to live for most of his life wondering why he was left alone in this world no father in his life after all and Virgil just knocked the girl up and dipped no mother in his life whoever this lady was just left him at the doorstep of the orphanage in Fortuna understanding that your parents chose to abandon you is definitely going to cause you to question your own worth to make you question what was so inherently wrong with you that your own parents decided to leave you behind on top of this Nero was also bullied by the neighborhood kids for it claiming that Nero must have been the child of a prostitute for him to have been left behind this is Nero's trauma it's not an intense isolated incident from his childhood like Virgil but rather the condition of his existence that he was born into regardless it's still significant and more than enough for Nero to develop a deep-rooted sense of inferiority because of it the circumstances of their childhood have led both Nero and Virgil to their desire for power both were left in conditions that made them question their own worth as people they were left to feel as if they were inferior and now continue to chase power as a result of it in order to not feel vulnerable or powerless but did you pick up on anything off about this comparison did you happen to catch something about Nero in particular during our discussion that's different from Virgil yes my people what separates Nero and Virgil is the strongest force in the world love wait now hold on don't groan at me just yet hear me out this is pretty significant the reason why Nero's desire for power is different from Virgil's is because unlike Virgil Nero was eventually able to experience genuine love and compassion from a family carry a and credos family often volunteered at the orphanage Nero was left in and grew fond of the kid eventually going on to adopted Nero into their family here he was able to experience compassion the idea of someone actually having an invested interest in your well-being simply because they care about you this was no longer a foreign concept to him and this is when things began to change in him you see family is often a big source of insecurity for people what often makes a person secure about themselves is whether or not they have a family member to show them unconditional love and support thus reassuring the person that they have worth because someone in this world has their back no matter what this is how you create a secure individual when you take that away you leave the person to feel insecure about their worth because now they don't have anyone to validate it leaving them vulnerable to finding other more potentially dangerous methods of seeking it Nero never had his biological parents there to give him that validation but kiri and credo were able to change that providing Nero with a new source of unconditional support if the concept of family means the world to Nero because he was lucky enough to experience it and this is how the desire for power shifted from that of Virgil's Nero still wants power but he only ever expressed these desires when his family was being threatened of course having a family never got rid of his inferiority completely you can never go back to how you were before your trauma it very much becomes a part of you but Curia and credo were able to help Nero cope with it in a more healthy way than Virgil ever did up until his final confrontation with Virgil Nero has been operating on the idea that his goal has been revenge he sought power under this idea but he didn't get him anywhere substantial the most he got was a single cut on eurozone but when Nero discovered that he actually has a father and that the man he has looked up to as a mentor was his uncle the whole time something new awakened within him he was literally on the verge of losing his newly discovered family and suddenly the memory of losing credo put everything into perspective for him Virgil is still the man who torn Nero's arm off leaving him weakened and helpless but that no longer mattered because at this point Nero came to terms with what his true motivation for power is protecting his family setting aside his own personal vendetta to fight for the one thing he truly cares about only then was he able to realize his true potential [Music] [Music] [Music] the desire for power in order to protect the people around him is what ultimately defines Nero and sets him apart from Virgil youtuber Civic explained it very well Nero's motivation for gaining power kept evolving as time went on unlike Virgil who remained static what most likely started off as a desire for power to prove his self-worth has managed to blossom into a desire to protect his family thanks to the love and compassion he experienced from having an adopted family and the consequences of losing a member of said family essentially being able to move forward from his origin unlike Virgil who has yet to move past his trauma thus making Nero a more balanced individual and far far greater than deadweight [Music] and with that we've officially covered Sparta's legacy I honestly can't begin to describe how impactful this Devil May Cry miniseries has been for my channel it's funny cuz I thought my first Doublemint cry video would actually be my least
