[Music] you're watching the southland conference on espn live from san antonio on the campus of uiw south conference football we're live from vincent stadium here in the alamo city a good one set for today hi everybody randy mcavoy alongside shea walker great to have you with us a beautiful day for football here in the southland conference shay two programs off to a pretty good start and in a shortened season every game is big for both teams well it certainly is randy and you talk about the uiw team they've got two wins under the belt and then they had an open week so it's going to be interesting to see how well they respond with this shortened season southeastern off to a good start especially offensively and all eyes are on their quarterback colt kelly this guy's phenomenal big time stats already early in the season you mentioned the stats what a tremendous start to the season for cole kelly he's got over 1100 yards passing 65 completion ratio he is a big guy he's a and he's a leader on this team and coach frank suffo said he is actually the engine that makes our team go looking forward to watching him play already over a thousand yards six touchdowns this season now on the other side for uiw their freshman quarterback cameron ward gets a lot of attention but hey they've got a running game led by kevin brown well you talk about kevin brown randy and he's a thumper i mean he is a physical in between the tackles runner but he's also got great top end speed and when this running game for uiw gets going it is a tough thing to stop and it's a very physical offensive line but kevin brown carrying the ball behind it it's a whole lot of pain to try to stop that offense eric moore's cardinals off to a 2-0 start 2-1 for southeastern they meet today in san antonio opening kickoff coming up here on espn here come the cardinals from uiw getting close to kickoff here in san antonio randy back for shea walker third member of a broadcast team is lady fritz let's go down the laney right now hey lady cardinals head coach eric morris has dramatically turned this program around since he took over in 2017. he told me he's proud about a lot of things throughout that journey but what he is the most proud of is that when you say the university of incarnate word around texas now people actually know they have a football program he said to be frank when he first got here he would walk into high schools to recruit and some kids did not know still that uiw had a division one football program so it's been very rewarding for him their brand recognition is growing across the state they run a great program they graduate their players now even the san antonio community is getting behind them so they've come a long way since football started here back in 2009 all right lanny look forward to checking in with you throughout the ball game let's check in now on the levy recognition keys to the game you know randy for both of these teams they have star-studded quarterbacks cole kelly we mentioned him in the open but with all the yardage that he has over 1100 yards six touchdowns 65 completion ratio cameron ward the freshman quarterback for uiw has been lights out in the first two games he is a true freshman randy six three 225 pounds he's got a a lightning bolt for an arm and he can also do it get it done with his legs great quarterbacks going at head to head today really looking forward to watching these two today again beautiful day for football oh 65 70 degrees excellent condition this is a busy town right now you've got southland conference football right next door you've got uiw softball going on ncaa women's basketball tournament in san antonio are you saying you got into a little bit of traffic today just a little bit just a little bit just a little bit there's frank selfo third season as head coach of southeastern louisiana record of 14 and 13. i always enjoyed talking with him too this guy's so enthusiastic shay on our conference caller earlier this week just raving about his program his kids and we'll tell a story too about how they reached out and helped to the their neighbors in lake charles uh after those hurricanes as well we're ready for kickoff uiw will kick it off to southeastern louisiana and they will bring it out austin mitchell for the lions and they will open it up on offense and we'll get our first look at cole kelly in this lion's office as we sit at the top coal kelly off to a terrific start he's a senior out of lafayette louisiana over a thousand yards six touchdowns you can't miss him out there six seven two sixty shay when transferred from arkansas had a touchdown catch last week just to show off the versatility of the quarterback but definitely a big time player they'll begin on the 17-yard line they're the numbers again on kelly's first down play handoff that's marcus cooper with the carry first play from scrimmage for southeastern louisiana cooper does a good job out of the backfield receiving and of course rushing the football a couple of top receivers for the lions out today austin mitchell and cj turner their top two receivers [Applause] [Music] nice pickup from southeastern on that one cephas johnson see if it's johnson also one of the quarterbacks here on this lions team but you'll see him out of the backfield some as well well a dynamic playmaker six five 220 pounds a junior he's got great speed gets out on the edge picks up positive yards there making it a third and two but see this johnson is one of those guys he gets in the backfield and there's packages that greg stevens offensive coordinator likes to run with both cole kelly and cephas johnson in the backfield they're down and short for southeastern pass is caught close to the 40-yard line that is nick kovacs and that's going to be a first down for the lions randy when you're 6-7 you can back pedal and you can drop a dime you see how you put his arm over to the receiver kovacs and he said no no back just a little bit further and he lost it over the head of the defender wasn't bad defense but man cole kelly made a play that was fantastic raving about the job cole kelly is done now you know he's the leader of this football team in this office he was behind a couple of really good quarterbacks as well worked his way up stayed patient and has really developed over the last year and off again that is marcus cooper takes a hit around the 46 stays on his feet and the lions are at midfield now nice pickup for cooper well brennan lincoln's left tackle getting out in front watch his big physical run right there marcus cooper lower the shoulder and this is a physical front randy this uiw cardinal defense is really really good and they've played extremely well in the first two games against magnesium lamar but this is a different offensive line that southeastern is putting in play today and another open opportunity for cole keller to get the ball downfield that was on second and one and again hooks up for the second time in the series with nick kovacs and another first down [Applause] good job of managing the offense moving the chains southeastern number 17 in the country number 20 for uiw cardinals 2-0 after wins over mcneese and lamar first down play kelly looking down field nice time in the pocket finds his receiver around the 22-yard line that is anthony spurlock his first catch so cole kelly doing a nice job we got a cardinal down at the 40-yard line we'll get back to that in a minute take a look at this play again a really fine job of cole kelly keeping that play alive and it took a while for spurlock to come across the defense offensive line doing a a heck of a job right now of keeping cole kelly clean in the pocket allowing him to look downfield and locate those receivers and spurlock comes up with another nice catch and moves the ball inside the 20-yard line or just outside the 20 excuse me there's a group of receivers ready to check in for the lions they've got several but in as we mentioned cj turner and austin mitchell are both out today did not make the trip we do not have any details on why but they are missing those two playmakers on offense again player down for uiw meaning there's training staff checking him out right now but he is getting helped up right now which is a good sign let's get a look at who it is chance maine he's uh at that outside linebacker spot plays on the edge and that 3-4 defense that they deploy here but he's a pretty big player big big role player on that team and certainly it'd be good for him to be back in the game first down again four southeastern after that completion from cole kelly to anthony spurlock now at the 22 yard line handoff marcus cooper up the middle gets close to the 15. [Music] this could be a pickup of around six yards give him five second down at five now coming up for the lions the offensive line is doing a fantastic job for this lions offense marcus cooper doing a good job carrying the football lowering the shoulders physical there in the trenches cooper again left side tries to turn the corner he is met around the 15 lunges forward for a yard again to the 14-yard line close to three yards on that so third and short for southeastern yeah that offensive line you've got a couple of juniors and three seniors anchoring that line they've done a nice job so far through the first three games for southeastern their center drew jones started 13 games in the 2019 season 6-1 300-pound senior [Applause] pass is caught out to javon connor as an open field tackle that was missed there randy by the cardinals defense wide receiver take another look here see the linebacker coming down and just a stop step back by javon carter connor cuts it up field picks up the first down that was on third and two if that tackle had been made in space the lions would be attempting a field goal right now but cephas johnson now at the quarterback spot first down johnson keeps met around the six yard line and down he goes yeah the last play he was the tackle could have been made around the 15 instead he got it down to the six yard line so turned it into a nine yard pickup a good opening drive so far for the lions as you see the play there from cephas johnson the 225 pound junior cole kelly back in now when trey richardson did a nice job for this cardinals defense on making that open field tackle fought off the block of the wide receiver and was able to take cephas johnson down second down goal to go for the six yard line kelly a little pressure tries to get loose gets the football off touchdown he makes the catch that's nick kovacs an alliance strike on their opening series here in san antonio master for quarterback play there by cole kelly doing a great job again of keeping the play alive he gets a little bit of pressure skips up but he finds a couple of white jerseys to get behind and then kovacs at 6-3 big target in the end zone cole kelly doing a great job on that drive 83-yard drive and the lions ended with the touchdown pass from cole kelly to nick kovacs they're on the board they lead in the first quarter [Music] southwood conference football on espn is brought to you by hercules tires ride our stream and by jostens the official championship ring provider of the southland conference seven nothing lions here in san antonio shea impressive opening drive for southeastern they march it down a couple of key conversions to keep the drive alive they ended with a touchdown pass well skill players stepping up javon connor without austin mitchell or cj turner available to the lions but made a big play to pick up the first down deep in the group but that was a methodical drive very well measured out by this southeastern team they went down they ran the ball when they needed to very tough physical runs by marcus cooper cole kelly did his job as a quarterback see if his johnson pitched in it was a all-encompassing drive but impressive against a very very stout uiw defense absolutely and again you look at the fact they're missing their top two receivers it shows you the kind of depth they've got in that receiving chord o'kelly took advantage of that so now uiw will get their first possession 10 26 mark there's cameron ward and shea you and i saw him a true freshman out of west columbus columbia texas a couple of weeks ago when they had that victory at mcneese and lake charles very impressive looking down field and that's gonna be incomplete around the 35-yard line pass was intended for kevin brown out of the back field but cameron ward this is a guy that we looked at him saying there's no way he's a freshman but that's how poised he was in lake charles that afternoon well he certainly was and what a coming out party for the first game of the season for cameron ward big numbers big arm full command of the offense very talented player little too much on that one [Applause] randy i'll tell you right robert farrell just just quick look at the defense for southeastern on the first play of the game cameron ward had forever and a day to throw the football there was nothing open downfield receivers trying to work away from the defensive backs on the second third and fourth look ward got pressured and had to make an errant throw and then an incomplete pass on second down now it's third down this lion's defense so far holding up very well brown ward and campbell you see the numbers there some threats offensively for uiw flag is down now that play around the 30-yard line on the third and 10 for uiw you're going to get a holding call on alex ramos doing a good job of trying to cover the back in the backfield but got too much jersey there and cardinals look like they'll be able to pick up the first down with the penalty that's interference defense there's frank's cell phone on the sidelines looking for an explanation and eric morris uh what a job he has done turning around this program third season they got a big break on that one to keep the drive going first and ten now for the [Applause] first cardinals handoff that goes to [Music] caleb ducross gets the carry for uiw get hurry up offense they don't waste a lot of time second down now for uiw pressure on ward he's looking nothing home looking down field nearly caught defended at the 30-yard line flag is down right there we'll see if the interference call is coming uh ferlando jordan i think he's gonna get flagged there yeah that man what a tough that's a tough call because he was really you had cameron ward scrambling out to his left uh there's probably a good call there it looks like lava receiver was coming back for the ball jalen campbell working the sidelines coach certainly doesn't like it on the other side of the field though and good call there by the officiating crew randy right now this defense for southeastern is really putting pressure on with the front seven and they're also doing a great job of coverage in the back end uw's caught a couple of breaks with flags against southeastern to keep this driver move the change out to the 48 now on that first down play kevin brown ran into a wall of white jerseys he really alex ramos number 30. looks like he did a good job coming out for that quarterback excuse me linebacker spot looking for his first completion and that one is incomplete around the 40. pass intended for jalen campbell the 6-1 junior for uiw defense lions defense not making it easy uiw has gotten their two first downs by penalties not because they're picking up the yardage young offensive line for uiw one that coach morris said continues to grow up a little bit week by week couple of freshmen the junior sophomore and a senior on this offensive line there's ward crosses the 40-yard line nice pickup and a first down for uiw yeah kevin brown finally getting that run game going he's not had much success so far in this first drive but a big play right there picked up 11 yards for the first down [Applause] picked up a couple of yards on that play so they'll keep you off balance but back to his offensive line now talking to coach morris he said listen what really helped us this is basically extra six months of practice with this young group with no season back in the fall they've learned the schemes that were able to gain their weight and his overall strength and then you just look for that experience on the football field and it's starting to pay off early for these guys [Applause] with a handoff in the carry he's been quickly around the 38-yard line yeah garrett crawford shooting through the gap there on the offensive line from that defensive end spot tough sledding in the middle of that defense right now they're really strong up front southeastern then that linebacking core led by alexis ramos he's the leading tackler on this lions team third down at six that's going to go against uiw [Applause] ballstar 62. uh third down eric morris honor he talked about the opportunity he had to coach some great quarterbacks there at texas tech when he was there including a guy named patrick mahomes not too bad yeah not too shabby huh well eric morris has done it just you mentioned earlier but what a tremendous job that he's done the uiw cardinals used to be everybody's homecoming game that is not the case anymore this is a tough physical good solid football team third and 11. ward nearly brought down at midfield he's on the run running room inside the 30. that's going to be a first down for the cardinals so nearly brought down back of the 50 the athletic ability took over [Music] [Applause] uh lua not able to bring down cameron ward that's what happens when you're 6-3 225 pounds and as athletic as cameron ward and then the run setting up the blocks downfield getting his team in position great job of doing it yeah i thought he was going to go out of bounds at least once maybe twice on that one but certainly cameron ward saw something that we didn't and it's a big time play for the cardinals offense yeah false start penalty will push it back against uiw take a look at cam ward again here well lua the defensive end comes in and he's got a great shot at him but i mean look the big the size and the way and the athleticism to shake off the tackle from the defensive end and then outrun the rest of the pursuit off the angle that's just every time we see this freshman quarterback he's making big time plays first and 15 now for the 25-yard line for uiw 7-0 southeastern they struck on their first series on the touchdown pass and uiw eric morris are going to take a time out here with 6 22 to go here in the first quarter they'll take it over person 15 they're knocking on the door trying to even it up here in san antonio seven nothing southeastern leading uiw here in san antonio first quarter eric morris fresh off a timeout they're knocking on the door here sheryl their first series on the 25-yard line how about some top offensive performers so far early in the season with some southern ties well you certainly have a couple of guys in teams that are ranked in the top 10 for total offense and and two of those teams randy and all of fcs are playing here today we'll get a look later at some of the numbers but it's it's been impressive starts by both of these teams ward over the middle looking for a receiver tray wolf coming up here are those numbers now sam houston leading the way total offense just ahead of uiw southeastern number five pretty impressive well you certainly have to tip your hat to these guys because offensively they are putting on a pinball exhibition as far as their offense is going second down and 15. ball is tipped and it's going to fall in completely about five lions going after that football here's alexis ramos trying to get a hand on it as well but it'll bring up third down now for the cardinals i like the effort there at the line of scrimmage somebody was able to get their hand on the football great job of anticipating that throw from cameron ward and cameron ward does have a little bit of a sidearm sling angle when he lets go of the football [Applause] that was ramos who got a hand on that one third down flag is down ward looking downfield he's gonna be hit out of bounds around the 34-yard line a couple of flags down actually herman christoph is the one who chased him out of the pocket and kept the pursuit on 46 or 48 could have been dominic lam i'm not sure 46 or 48 for the lions defense did a great job of putting pressure on cameron ward offense fouls offset replay third down yeah 48 dominique lamb the hands to the face wow this cardinals offense has been very fortunate with the penalty calls that have gone against them they get another opportunity at third and 15. looking over the middle pass is caught near the 16-yard line yeah jaylen campbell on that little crossing route randy that's a set up for the field goal i like the discipline there of cameron ward not trying to get all of this find your receiver in the middle of the field where the ball placement will be easier for your field goal kicker to convert [Applause] [Music] carson moore with the field goal attempt that's going to be blocked again they had three last week another one for the lions i was talking to some of the coaches of southeastern down on the field earlier randy and i mentioned to the special teams in three block kicks last week yep and they just kind of rolled their ass ago and they they shrug their shoulders like man i don't know how that happened i don't think i've ever seen that and now they open this game on uiw's first drive with the block field goal yeah coach selfo told us on the phone call this week he said i've never seen three in a game before well they've got their first one here with 5 10 left in the first quarter there's something going on down there in hammond louisiana right now it's the no field goal zone it's working the lions get it now on their own 20 yard line up seven nothing [Applause] kelly passes carter on the 25. that's devon connor took that hit stayed on his feet picked up extra yardage there and a first down right off the bat for the lions yeah wide receivers playing physical connor knew that he was going to take a shot after catching the ball in the crossing route cole kelly got it to him fast enough for quick enough where he could pull it in and square up the shoulders pick up the first down [Applause] kelly over the middle again at the 35-yard line another completion look like salon weber yeah weber with the catch his first catch of the afternoon [Music] are you talking about missing austin mitchell and cj turner i mean those are two big play receivers and for both of those guys to be out and this lions offense doing what they're doing so far pretty impressive pressure and down goes cole kelly first sack of the game for uiw well see chance maine back in the game number 95 so that's good news for the cardinals nicole kelly the pocket just gets collapsed and give it a little shout out for the defense there making sure that they're getting into the backfield derek petry [Applause] on the sack w loss of five third and ten now from the 31 for southeastern kelly pass is caught tackled made just shy of the 40-yard line that was marcus cooper on the reception for the lions so it's going to bring up fourth down and shorten the alliance we'll be forced to punt it away here austin dunlap in for southeastern robert farrell will receive for uiw station around the 20-yard line [Music] wind is not an issue at all today flag's not even moving on a picturesque day here in san antonio ferrell from his own 18. quickly gets out of bounds but uiw will get it back play by the defense to stop that drive to sack they hold him cardinals get it back down a touchdown here in the first quarter seven nothing southeastern on the road leading uiw the cardinal looks a little bit patient right there on the sideline trying to talk it over there huh yeah it's uh right now this lions defense has been a very hard puzzle to figure out for the cardinals offensively [Music] first down get flushed again from the pocket cameron ward brought down from behind the rodney sophia so sir there it is again pressure came quickly from alliance one that's just great hustle by your lineman coming down field fighting off the stiff arm and sophie sir comes up with a big play offense defensively excuse me for the lions second out at 10 pass is caught out of the backfield kevin brown takes a big hit at the 30. and it's able to pop back up this game is getting it started physical it's getting more physical right now [Applause] there's a play again but watchdog is going to kick it out to kevin brown and watch the the lions converge on him four of them three of them and on the play two of them go right down third down at five from the 31. there's ward pass is caught it'll be enough for a first down trey wolf the reception his second of the ball game for the cardinals good job offensively by cameron ward being patient and converting on that third down [Applause] wolf again at the 40. he's got running room down the sideline takes a hit at the 25-yard line what a grab by trey wolfe you talk about wide receivers and you want them to catch the ball in their hands take a look at he's going to reach behind him got the throw going down and he snags it well that was a outstanding grab and a good run after catch absolutely kind of turned him around great focus to hold on to that football [Applause] with the catch that's his first at the ball game 109 left in first quarter 7-0 [Applause] cardinals offense starting to figure it out now getting a little bit patient is cameron ward duke still on his feet fighting his way near the 10-yard line he gets there i missed tackle looked like that was for lando jordan number two had an opportunity to bring zucchros down take another look at this just a little quick pitch out option play and yeah we got to make that tackle right there goodbye good job by duke though fighting through the tackle farrell with the catch [Music] taylor with the stop for southeastern second half goal to go now for uiw clock is winding down 30 seconds and ticking away here in the first quarter ward looking for the corner just knocked away well defended by southeastern [Applause] intended receiver on that play was darren schafen and looking like orlando jordan on the coverage there man-to-man coverage since at the last second he turns around and bats the ball away great job jordan already a south of conference defensive player of the week and already a southwest excuse me southeastern oh my goodness can i have a little assist there southland conference special teams player of the week still spring football for me mcboy there you go there's ward pass is caught touchdown for uiwa to robert farrell yeah farrell a 5-9 target working from that inside receiver spot got behind the defensive coverage and cameron ward again patient throw right over the top nice job there good execution [Applause] point after coming up carson moore 15 seconds left and the cardinals are an extra point away from tying things up and they do 7-7 now here in san antonio look at the touchdown pass once again cameron ward have a pretty good series caps it off with a touchdown yep found the inside receiver he pressed the route out to the outside with a couple of lower receivers to pull the defense down and cameron ward gets the ball out throws it perfectly farrell there with the touchdown grab well talking with the frank selfo again on our coaches conference call this week he's got some ties to uiw his son played here he's been several years but he was talking about just where the program was when his son was here back 2013 2014 area and kind of where it is now it's a lot different he noticed it a year ago that big changes were happening here at uiw with the quality of athletes that they're putting on the football field and he went back to crediting that guy right there eric morris in three years what he's been able to do here for this cardinals program [Applause] kickoff off the chest the lions he'll bring it out but uiw right there to smother him it's inside the 10-yard line flag is down where that tackle was made [Applause] number five of the kicking team it's 15 from the end of the run it's first down well that's 15 yards will certainly be a huge help for this lions offense ball just bounces right off and ferlando jordan looks like number two there got a little bit of a face mask much better field position for this lion's offense chester javon connor so they get a big break instead of being buried at the seven or eight yard line they'll now open this series on the 22. what could be the final play of the first quarter paul kelly over the middle has a receiver off the fingertips of the intended wide receiver anthony spurlock now what a throw by cole kelly thread the needle downfield spurlock great opportunity there to haul that in [Applause] he's looking over the right shoulder not able to complete the catch that's a missed opportunity for this lions offense that's a little sneaky play wasn't it yeah caught everybody off guard there that was nick kovacs that's the end of the first quarter first quarter is in the books here at vincent stadium in san antonio southeastern strikes on their first series and uiw responds late in the quarter to tie it up we're onto the second quarter south of conference football on espn [Music] tied at seven as we start the second quarter here at vincent stadium in san antonio randy mcavoy shay walker laney fritz with you south of conference football big showdown early in the season two teams off to good start lions two and one uiw two-and-oh to start this season lions begin pass play that is caught from cole kelly and finds javon carter once again and that is catch number three on the day for connor yeah and a really big catch for connor too to keep the chains moving on third and about seven connor knows he's going to take a shot on the shallow crossing route but he does hang on to the football and moves the chains for this lions offense shelley now on the afternoon nine out of ten so far his first 10 pass attempts he's spreading it around to kovacs conner spurlock has a catch cooper has a catch just tuning in cj turner and austin mitchell the top two receivers for the lions out today did not make the trip cole kelly over the middle has got an open receiver had him it looks like cephas johnson tripped over his own feet there last second well not a wide receiver which might explain him getting behind the defense cephas johnson had an opportunity there and [Applause] like i said he kind of trips over the toe wide open ball was thrown beautifully not able to come with the grab i like the aggressive play goal offensive coordinator greg stephen he's keeping stevens is keeping his foot on the gas third and five now for the 40-yard line kelly again pass is caught the mark that's going to be enough for a first down so another completion for kelly and that's anthony spurlock again these wide receivers randy are doing a great a great job for southeastern of getting just beyond the yardage needed for the first down on us so again on a third and long play you see there's no run after the catch but the wide receivers are positioning yourself beyond the mark to get the first down and they're coming up with those grabs anthony sperlock doing a good job marcus cooper he's going to be met and you're going to lose a yard or two on that play nice job by the cardinal defense to swarm that play bring up second down let's check in with lady fritz down on the sidelines hey laney hey guys when we talked to coach dulfo ahead of this game he raved about his quarterback cole kelly and the leader he has become for the lions it's obvious what he can do on the field we're seeing that today but what coach selfo really wanted us to know was the type of guy he is off the field he said kelly has grown from both a maturity and preparation standpoint cellphone told us he's extremely vocal on both sides of the ball actually he said if we watch the sidelines closely today we will most likely catch him in a defensive huddle at some point in the game this is cole kelly's team coaches know that players know that and they all respect the work he's put into getting to this point and stand behind him 100 that was seth jack west with the sack for uiw on cole kelly so pressure from the cardinals big stop here for the defense well this is a big push by the cardinals defensively up on the front end and they got five guys rushing the quarterback jacquez is able to come up with the sack and cole kelly now looking at third and 15. get down to the 44-yard line close to it of uiw second sack today for the cardinals are getting some pressure as they needed do they need to do coming into this one 12 31 left second quarter we're tied at seven here in san antonio take a look at the afc fcs coaches poll through march 15th the latest numbers top five there's sam houston right there at number six shea after that big win over nichols a week ago they moved up from number 12. and then on the back end of this you've got nickels there at 16 after that loss southeastern at 17 uiw checking in at number 20. yes south of conference well represented in the top 20 and that was a a monster game by the bearcat boy against a very good nicholls team the number seven team in the country at the time and it was just a an onslaught of offense defense and special teams played by the bearcats pass is caught on third at 15. look at that pass play from cole kelly to terrell carter and they'll move the change first down for the lions how about the zip on the ball he's got to have a little bit of time his offensive line does a good job of that but he throws the ball perfectly to carter in the hole of the defense big-time play [Applause] ron jones checked into the backfield for southeastern pass is called cole kelly again finds javon carter connor with his third catch in the ball game this afternoon under 12 minutes to go here first half just like the poise of cole kelly in the pocket i really do and again he's getting good protection by that offensive line giving an opportunity to look down the field but that that was a laser beam shot that he threw down to terrell carter for the first down there's jones his first carrier and the linebacker ends up on his backside oh taran jones secondary listen [Music] oh man it's all we talked about it being physical it's physical no question about that hey this is a big game for both programs again we talked about it short season one team's two and one one team's two-and-oh you gotta win to stay alive in the conference race and in the playoff run as well [Applause] [Music] [Applause] possession to lead off this football game on a touchdown pass from cole kelly [Applause] good protection kelly over the middle nearly picked off their front part of the end zone yeah i don't think he liked what he saw for options to go to his receivers on second down so knowing that he's got another bite at the apple i think he just threw that ball out of the back of the end zone galecki analogy right there really got a hand on it there the front end of that end zone third down now and six for the [Music] [Applause] you get to the lions line to move the chains here [Applause] nelly passes caught out of the back field rod jones having a pretty good little series here a couple of carries a catch as well as a couple of grabs also but good play call good scheme to get taron jones comes into the game with no receptions ran he has a couple on this drive already and moving the chains on that last catch was a big job and a big deal for this line's offense now they're knocking on the door jones line of scrimmage no gain on that play [Music] was the battle down in the trenches josh dixon defensively there for the cardinals just kind of looked like the mono amano warfare going on in the trenches right now this is a nice battle that we're getting to see [Applause] well cephas johnson in at the quarterback spot [Applause] johnson will keep it's got the space left side cephas johnson in for the touchdown for southeastern johnson just walked it up randy taking a look here what's that and then he knows he sets up the defenders and he knows that he's got the speed to beat them to the end zone and he did a great job of setting it up making the defense pause for a half second half count and then he breaks it out to his left walks it into the end extra point is no good mateo ringafo off that left upright we'll see if that makes a difference throughout this ball game cephas johnson though finds the end zone lions back up in san antonio cephas johnson finding the end zone for southeastern louisiana extra point was no good but it lead it by six now nine and a half left in this first half numbers today for cephas johnson as a junior he's the backup to cole kelly but he's so athletic coach selfo finds a role for him in this offense and came in handy right there with that touchdown so uh southeastern will kick it back off to uiw now credit the defense of the lions so far today champion very impressed with what they've been able to pull off here mistake there on that kickoff so corey told he knows that helmet is off and he stepped out of bounds they're going to be buried around looks like maybe the eight yard line well so corey tolls is lightning in a bottle in the kickoff returns and we saw him return one for a touchdown against mcneese state a couple of weeks ago but his momentum carried him out he's trying to make a play for his team take another look as he's tracking the ball makes the catch but then the forward momentum pulls him out and he knows at that point he's put his offense in a very bad spot here comes cameron ward no market uh [Applause] yeah i said eight yard line mistake in their three yard line he stepped out of bounds he's shy there the five yard line so they're now at the three yard line to open this series now first down play and complete pass from cameron ward interesting story oh as we heard from from coach morris on cameron ward again a true freshman out of west columbia really fell under the radar when it came to recruiting and they really saw something they liked when they watched him play in a triple option offense in high school so he's a totally different style of offense but he took him a little while to get comfortable with this he started as the fourth string quarterback but thanks to that extended time with the covet break he was able during workouts to get a lot of reps and they finally said you know what he's getting results we like what he's doing out there well and you really have to appreciate the way that he is adopted when you run the triple option offense you really don't have a lot of opportunities to throw the football but his command of the passing game i mean it's like he's learned it he's right he's well steeped in it and his arm strength is tremendous but again i mean you have to pick at this this is like going very very granules and well sometimes he throws the ball from the three-quarter motion passes caught gonna be kevin brown a couple flags down on the play yeah probably a face mask trying to tackle kevin brown downfield and cameron ward did a good job of setting up the screen pass yardage gain looks like it's enough for the first down then they'll be the penalty after personal foul face mask number [Applause] alexander called for the face mask another look here [Applause] he's trying to chase the play down you seem let go of the face mask and that's exactly look if you get called on a hustle play that's all right i mean coaches are not going to be mad at you because as soon as he as soon as he realized that he had face masks he let go of it but referees made the right call so not only a good offensive play by cameron ward but with the tack on the penalty now that three yard line doesn't look so bad does it i don't know they've got it out to the 40 now first down and 10 for uiw [Applause] [Music] it up that's going to be incomplete around the 30-yard line looks like darion schafen was the intended receiver [Music] covergirl plays zai alexander you know the two games now excuse me the one game and one and a half quarters that we've seen cameron ward play that's the that's the kind of one of the touch passes that he's trying to make and he's taking a little bit off the ball he's got the arm strength to get it downfield as witnessed on that particular pass right there still on his feet uiw trying to punch it in fray wolf has been a busy guy here in the first half for uiw big yardage for the cardinals and they're knocking on the door again now you got to love the yards after catch but take another look a laser beam thrown by cameron ward puts it right on trey wolfe 57 yards on that pickup ward on his feet stays on his feet see if they're going to mark him down or not i think they are oh wow it looked like he was going to walk into the end zone and herman kristoff had first shot at him a little bit of jawing going on right now very physical the extra point team is out they're going to give it to okay i was waiting for the caught ed didn't actually see the call and it is ruled a touchdown i thought for a second maybe his neat touch but it didn't so touchdown for ward and a little scuffle after that play but they'll take it we're tied at 13 extra point coming up now [Applause] carson moore is up and it is good [Applause] 14-13 a uiw with 8-17 left in the first half here in san antonio got a good one here in the outpost 14-13 uiw their first lead of this contest here today extra point was missed by southeastern their last touchdown so the cardinals punch it in there on that drive and have a one-point lead now plenty of time left here in the first half orlando jordan and terrell carter are back to receive for the lions as carson moore will kick it off actually john cyphers was the kickoff guy for uiw take a look at a couple of key plays on that last drive for uiw shay courtesy of cam ward nice touch pass here nearly brought that one in yeah he tried to get it down the field but it looked like he's a little bit under thrown now take a look at the zip on this pass i mean he just comes right back to trey wolfe and wolf with a great run after catch but the ball was on the money and that's i mean that's kind of what you get when you have a freshman quarterback sometimes under throw it a little bit but most of the time cameron ward has been spot on not just in this game leading up to this game and in this game he's been spot on first at 10 for the 25. cole kelly under pressure what a throwing catch nearly brought in by javon connor for about five yards he was flipping it back and forth between each hand and nearly made the catch midfield another talking about bullet tight passes cole kelly trying to find connor not able to come up with a grab this one would you like to see your wide receiver if you can you got to get two hands on that thing oh you got a couple of hands that one almost got it in i'm almost assured he would have had it if he used both hands but ball got on him fast they need big plays like that this lions team does to stick in this game [Applause] crosses the 30-yard line how about cephas the backup quarterback you know what he's had a couple of catches today had the touchdown run not and not doing like trick routes or anything like that i mean he ran a good flat route he pushed up the field enough before he made his outbreak and got separation from the linebackers and picks up six seven yards on that play [Applause] third down at four and off marcus cooper number four he's gonna be line of scrimmage looks like right at the first down marker man i am thoroughly enjoying the line play by the offensive and defenses here on on these series and you see this i mean it is and it is it is grown man football going on guys are good great blocks defensive players are doing their thing grass is caught again connor with the catch elliott davidson with the stop for uiw continues to roll inside seven minutes to go first half [Applause] old kelly this is a heavy package for southeastern brought in a lot of beef [Applause] [Music] [Applause] helmet comes flying off of marcus [Applause] well he saw some daylight in front of him as well that might have been lebechi coming in with the hit because he is known for roaming around and creating big contact [Applause] we'll take another look just going down the flat trying to check it down see defensively right there they'll come off the field for a play i'm sure he'll check right back in [Music] third and five now for southeastern they need to get to the 45-yard line paul kelly will keep it and he'll have enough for the first down he just saw nothing downfield so he tucked it in and ran for the first down there well four-man rush offensive line again doing a good job of giving cole kelly time to go through the progression he sees it's not there he knows he needs to pick up three four yards stretches out that big six seven frame to pick it up nice job there by cole kelly recognizing what it was don't make too much out of it don't try to do too much pick up the first down move the chains [Applause] another passing catch to ron jones wow that was a he left over what two or three guys right there that was pretty impressive yeah trey richardson the cornerback is going to go low on him right there excuse me that wasn't trey richardson trey richardson on the end of it but taron jones 510 205. getting some air style points very productive first half for jones this is a good drive by the lions right now they're picking up first downs moving the chains jones with the catch inside the 15. inside the 20. [Applause] that's a 16-yard pickup on the pass play 507 to go first half time out 14-13 uiw but the lions are threatening again here late in the first half in san antonio [Music] southland conference football on espn is brought to you by canon and by insurance offices of america 1413 uiw 507 left first half first and ten lions now as they threaten to regain the lead here in san antonio [Music] first down play will go to marcus cooper still on his feet out of bounds [Applause] around the five yard line after the market stepped out of bounds around the seven this won't show up in the any scorebook but the block by ed mcgee the wide receiver outstanding job to ensure that jones had a good running lane he did a great block outside and that's a hard block to hold he did a good job of it that puts the lines now in first and goal first and goal to go from the seven yard line 14-13 cardinals lions struck first cephas johnson in their quarterback he's already run for one touchdown he picks up one close to two yards on that keeper la davidson comes in and takes the legs out from underneath johnson take another look here see 24 coming off that safety spot also got a little help in there from the defensive lineman coming down the lane though trying to get your quarterback too many hits like that johnson still in there second down and [Music] goal johnson finds a seam inside the five down to the four yard line and not much real estate there for cevis johnson talk about how tough and physical this cardinals defense is [Applause] johnson will come out pull kelly back in now for the lions [Applause] on a third down play coming up from the three-yard line [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] marcus cooper just to the right of cole kelly [Applause] timeout right before that ball was snapped frank's cell phone wants to talk this one over southeastern louisiana 36. they've still got two time outs left here in this first half uiw's used all three of theirs third down and three what do you what are you thinking here offensively for a play call here shea what do you think you know randy i like sticking with your nip and what you did to get here and with those two runs by cephas johnson i'm not so sure that was you know it's easy for me to arm chair quarterback i didn't say from here but the reality is is that they got here by being aggressive being physical at the point of attack getting taron jones running the football cole kelly throwing the ball swinging around and getting it down the yard and then you got into this first and goal opportunity and now you're at third and goal you've really picked up maybe one maybe two yards in the last couple of plays [Music] you got your passing quarterback in i don't think cole kelly's gonna scramble here but try to give him an opportunity to find a receiver and see if he can convert on third down [Applause] here we go third and goal for the three-yard line kelly looking over the middle knocked loose incomplete pass intended for javon connor [Music] angela becky right there good coverage for uiw a couple of flash plays looking outside is where cole kelly started but he comes back across the middle of the coverage and connor feels like he got pulled down there and might have [Music] all-important field goal attempt now by the lions he'll go up and good for southeastern ring a foe with the honors and the lions are back up now by two with 3 10 left here in this first half coming up at halftime interview with uiw president dr thomas evans laney will have that player of the week segment as we always bring you the spotlight a top player in the south and conference also highlights and stats as we get you ready for the second half [Music] fans making their way out beautiful day here in san antonio not a cloud in the sky 70 degrees couldn't dial it up any better than this could you sure could and you know we keep talking about spring football and working our way into it i think we're pretty much into it uh it it's starting to feel a little bit more normal than it did when we first started out doing it i think the teams are it the teams are the play of the teams is getting better so we're seeing good football by good teams well all is making improvements as well they've all had to deal with obviously the covet issues throughout the fall it opened some doors though for extra workouts extra reps to get them ready for spring football six game season you can't afford the setbacks first and ten deep ball incomplete pass intended for by cameron ward looking for darion schaefen again he's looked downfield several times for chaffing in this one today oh yeah it's a good job by this on that throw that was a throw there that cameron ward i mean that's the one that you want to do on the deep ball he kind of pulled the string on one earlier and again i feel kind of bad about keep mentioning that randy because he's had so many other great throws in this game i mean that's what we should be focusing on and i'm just you can't help but be impressed with his arm strength and his knowledge of the passing game kevin brown showing the speed touchdown uiw wow [Applause] [Music] randy he was stopped at the line of scrimmage kevin brown kept the feet moving kept the body lean going take another look looks like he's going to be stopped nowhere to go matthew right there on that hit but kevin brown runs through it and then outruns everyone else to get it into the end zone a little bit of style points on the end of that one 75-yard touchdown run for that man kevin brown [Applause] [Music] extra point up and good and the cardinals are back on top here at home 21-16 you just can't help but be impressed by the physical nature and when you run through those arm tackles like that the top end speed to outpace every defender bring it into the end zone that's impressive now take a look at that randy and all of fcs i think kevin brown number two in the country 156 yards julius that's it from sacred heart and a 185 clip but yeah kevin brown very impressive coach very concerned about what the damage he could do and then definitely a priority for this southeastern defense and kevin brown just showed why yeah that cardinal sideline fired up right now really was a big shot in the arm [Music] to get the lead back in this ball game brown from mount pleasant south carolina [Applause] well by scoring so quickly for the cardinals it will give cole kelly in the lions offense at least two and a half minutes and that's a long time for this lions offense yeah plenty of time on the clock still 21-16 southeastern if you're just tuning in southeastern louisiana struck on their first series of this game to open the ball game with a touchdown took a little while a couple series for uiw to get comfortable cameron ward and his weapon settling in and some laser throws by cameron ward continually to be impressed with his command of the offense and the throws that he makes [Applause] flag is down it's gonna be an interference call coming up against uiw yeah chance maine you just can't do that cole kelly got rocked it's going to be a late hit see he was on the coverage looks like it may have been brandon [Applause] richard personal foul roughing the passer number 95 of the defense 15 yards from previous spot it's first down all right so no interference call roughing the passer and take a look i mean maine definitely does it late just you just can't do that i mean that's the kind of play that you don't want to make your team just had a big offensive play scored you're back on the field trying to keep the other team out been an incomplete pass but all for naught and another good job marcus cooper weaving his way for a first down carry yeah gets it to midfield 235 left first half plenty of time for the lions and senator drew jones getting up to the second level doing a good job of bouncing off the linebacker and creating this space oh my goodness in and out of the hands of connor on that one around the 35 ball had a lot of pace on it randy a lot of pace connor running at top speed not able to bring it down a lot of running room if he had made that catch [Applause] second down from the 50. [Applause] that's going to be intercepted by uiw off the tip pass turnover for southeastern and uiw is going to get the football back on offense around midfield after the interception by moses reynolds of uiw got a flag down as well we'll see what that's about oh it's chippy right now these are going to be after these be dead ball fouls but very chippy blame hoover for the cardinals clapping his hands and trying to get the ire of the lions defense up and we'll see what happens here on the call [Applause] personal foul d1 past 15 yards after the end of the return first down on ui [Applause] well defensively moses reynolds did a good job because it i believe he was a guy that deflected the ball and it went about 15 20 feet in the air right off of his shoulders drops right back down to him so good job defensively there by reynolds 6-2 200-pound corner and the dead ball play or dead ball fouls excuse me gets the ball inside the 35 yard line this this cardinals offense doesn't need a whole lot of help offensively from field position they're very explosive and looking to take advantage and uh oh two minutes 11 seconds is an eternity for offense that's led by cody krill the offensive coordinator eric morris is the head coach with his background [Applause] [Music] all right first down from the 39-yard line cameron ward down field has an open receiver over throws him there around the 20-yard line pass was intended for mark sullivan clock stops with 205 left [Applause] [Music] [Applause] brown tries to turn that right corner takes a hit out of bounds crosses the 30-yard line [Applause] a couple extra yards down to the 27 it looks like yeah on second down in 15. he picks up 12 yards that's a great run again by kevin brown so dynamic so hard to bring down in the open field and really good top end speed [Applause] [Music] board out to brown again takes a hit big hit stays on his feet though down to the 24 yard line that's going to pick up about three yards third down coming up now for uiw yeah they're gonna give him a first down randy i think with that extra fight yeah actually right he got it past there took another takes a big hit right there but does not go down until he gets it passed that's ramos there to clean it up but not before kevin brown picks up a first down so chains move first and 10 for the 25 minute 30 left here ward in trouble gets away running room big yardage inside the five-yard line before he's brought down randy the thing that's so impressive about cameron ward making that decision to run the football they're going to go fast here every time they get inside the [Applause] 10-yard line they go fast but he sees the opening and he knows his defensive lineman and he can outrun him he's quick enough fast enough and through the foot enough to get it out there look at wards run once again sees nothing eddie yeah again this is a freshman making some pretty good choices out there devin again as you see he recognizes in those good choices that he's making that he's got offensive line excuse me defensive lineman around him and he's comfortable confident and athletic enough to outrun him second down goal to go from the three [Applause] house is caught touchdown uiw robert farrell with the honors for the cardinals as they strike with a minute nine left yep second touchdown catch of the first half for robert farrell a good job of setting that play up the ball is on the left hash he goes into motion left to right stops starts and then he just makes a b line for the goal line cameron ward doing a great job getting the ball to him where he doesn't have to turn doesn't have to slow down that was an easy catch for the touchdown and good execution by the cardinal offense one after carson moore for uiw it's up and it is good there's robert farrell getting a look at the touchdown pass again then start little stop hit full speed get it over the end zone that didn't take long at all after that penalty against southeastern louisiana that pushed him up six plays 34 yards on the scoring drive no good teams this is how they play they convert turnovers to touchdowns moses reynolds comes up with the interception gives his team good field position aided by the penalty and they march right down the field in i'm going to say pretty impressive fashion finish it off with the touchdown kickoff honors john cyphers left footed kicker with a minute nine left here mine's looking for a good return if they can get one here [Applause] look at the southland conference standings again reaching about the midway point six game season uiw entering today 2-0 in conference and overall sam houston's playing lamar tonight and there's southeastern coming to san antonio with a two-and-one mark all in conference play so it's gonna be a good conference race down the stretch the big game still ahead well and you've got to be impressed with the teams and we've got three teams in the top 20 as a southland conference it's pretty impressive another big throw there by cole kelly throw carter on the other end he'll move the chains clock stops and actually resumes now hit the one minute mark they've got time now with a couple of strikes coming up from cole kelly if they can move it down field here another completion to anthony spurlock test number four on the day for spurlock a little too much on that one from cole kelly falls incomplete around the 20-yard line pass intended for nick kovacs 33 seconds left could be a third and five now for southeastern [Applause] with the stop clock on the incomplete pass cole kelly takes a little bit of direction from the sideline and make a play move the chains you still got plenty of time to put points on the board [Applause] coach suffolk's going to use his last timeout jones with the carry for the lions actually not his last he's got one more little short of the first down fourth and two now 26 seconds left [Applause] it looked like tehran jones might have picked up a little bit more running room than they're giving him credit for well taryn jones also a josten's classroom championship how about that finance major 3.36 gpa all academic team member in 2019 two-time member of the southland conference commissioners on a roll [Music] played in all three games this season all 13 back in 2019 getting it done on the field and more importantly in the classroom as well our johnson's classroom champion well well deserved and he has actually helped this offense earlier in this half with a couple of catches out of the backfield and now well looking for devon connor there good coverage by uiw and gerald the linebacker was blanketed on top and 24 seconds left and we we know that eric morris was a star receiver for texas tech playing for mike leach and the run and gun offense or air raid offense excuse me and this cardinals team you just wonder if he's i don't think he's content with sitting on the ball right now right they forced the conversion over on fourth down has the cardinals defense and now let's see what the offense has to give himself an opportunity to put more points on the board all right give it over on downs uiw with 24 seconds left look at that run another nice run from kevin ball is loose lions with their hands on it uiw though jumps right back on and that's jalen campbell with a heads-up play around the 25-yard line [Applause] no time-outs left for uiw so clock rolling 10 seconds counting now there's ward over the middle he's got a receiver touchdown uiw [Applause] trey wolf on the other end of that strike from cameron ward [Applause] what a great couple of plays by this cardinals offense again on fourth down defensively the cardinals stopped southeastern short of the first down they had the ball around the 50-yard line the officiating cruise looks like him do a replay review but eric morris offensive coordinator cody krill saw the opportunity had good field position got a great first run by kevin brown and well throwing ball great catch good focus there for trey wolfe yeah it was really nice catch and a good job of fitting that ball in by cameron ward in between a couple of defenders for southeastern cambered ward we just talked about the job he has done developing since he arrived on campus here was a triple option quarterback in high school never played the spread at all so it's a week by week development he's really come on not the prettiest of passes but it doesn't matter he fits the ball in between the three defenders there for southeastern and a good job of trey wolf recognizing where he was on the field come up with a touchdown after review early on the field is confirmed touchdown and randy did you see the elation on the sideline for uiw oh yeah they're fired up they were running on the field talk about a spark at the end of the half i mean look at the clock right now what a way to end it for uiw [Applause] 35-16 uiw on that first down run randy kevin brown did a good job of running but he gets stripped of the football and jalen campbell somehow scoops it up maintain possession for the cardinals and then on the next play cameron ward finds trey wolf in between the defenders for a touchdown did not take long at all again with no timeouts left they had to hurry once that clock resumed trey wolfe today look at those numbers five catches for 142 yards and a touchdown [Applause] all in the first half uiw will kick it off here it was out of bounds at the 24-yard line so enough for one play here to end the first half free kick out of bounds number 50 in the kicking team fully placed at 35-yard line first down well the lions offense just going to take a knee cole kelly take it into the half [Applause] well as advertised this uiw offense they come in with the big numbers they've shown in their first two wins of this season and more of the same here at home today against southeastern lions with some work to do certainly confidence for the cardinals as they head to the field house for the halftime break what kind of spark does a late touchdown like that do on a two two or three play drive and you're in and with three seconds left well the score that they had before the last score was tremendous and then you come back from a momentum standpoint and you saw again you saw the team erupt on the sidelines for uiw that tells you how important that last touchdown was from by trey wolfe going down and getting that ball digging it out of the dirt for the touchdown all right halftime festivities coming up halftime show laney fridge we have an interview with uiw president our spotlight athlete at mud 4 highlights and scores we'll get you ready for the second half 35-16 uiw leading southeastern here at the half it's san antonio back live at vincent stadium in san antonio getting ready to start the second half it's been all cardinals over southeastern specifically in that second quarter where they really pulled away let's take a look at some of the highlights and key plays in the first half a lot to bring you now early on southeastern got it started on the opening possession with the touchdown pass to nick kovacs from cole kelly and then uiw started to warm up a little bit shay pam ward robert farrell there's cephas johnson he got some action there filling in for cole kelly he's made a couple of good catches and of course that touchdown run right there but uiw is tough to slow down with this guy and cameron ward just so big physical and athletic tough to bring down in the open field as we keep saying only a freshman kevin brown a hammer in the backfield takes this touchdown he's got a lot of style points there breaking tackles at the line of scrimmage out running everybody else and then he's gonna he's gonna put a little show on right here okay yeah all right make it into the end zone but what a run by kevin brown and really talk about setting the tone coming back trey wolf after the interception by moses reynolds gives the cardinals a ball back moses riddles doing a good job and he has a great lockdown corner nice little pass will pitch out to robert farrell again for a touchdown and this offense right now for uiw humming closing it out cameron ward to trey wolf in between three defenders perfect pass wolfe tracks it down beautifully what's in store for the second half we're going to find out here in a few minutes 35 16 uiw leading southeastern second half coming right up [Music] take a look at the first half stats here from san antonio uiw leading 35-16 total yards 372 in that first half shea by this cardinals offense when you look at the balance the 190 on the ground and the 182 through the air just a fantastic first half by the cardinals opening kick off here and a big hit conveniently delivered by southeastern louisiana we heard that again from up here so corey toads is a big play return guy for this car they'll say take a look lifted him off the ground put him on his back my goodness that's how you start out a second half right well you want to get your team fired up a little bit [Applause] that's donnell ward mcgee a defensive back coming down on special teams with that big play uiw gets it first to open the second half quick dump off to kevin brown and a quick stop from the lions let's go down to check in once again with lady fritz hey lady hey guys i just talked to coach selfo and he told me his message to his guys at halftime was pretty simple they've got to keep playing they've got another 30 minutes another two quarters he said he was disappointed with how they executed on offense defense and special teams so he said they've got to come out here with more energy and more locked in so hopefully that big play right there will help him out that's a good start for sure they need to piece it together here to get back and climb back into this one but that's a nice strike we just witnessed from cameron ward out to the 45-yard line he found robert farrell snuck out behind the defense and he was wide open that was easy pitching catch for a first down and there's two big momentum plays by the lions defense and just like that the cardinals moving the ball down the field now in chunks kaelin nassef that's his first catch of the afternoon nearly took out a guy on the sidelines there for the lions they get it down to the 36 yard line so cardinals moving heat coming on ward he gets it off pass is caught around the 27 yard line he gets credit for that looks like it's robert farrell you see how nicely cameron ward releases the football he's sliding to his left and while he's doing that he throws a perfect dark pass downfield to his receiver where there's a little bit of traffic but an open scene again another chunk play by this cardinals offense [Applause] first and ten they march it to the 25 yard line opening series for uiw pass is caught over the middle touchdown just like that that did not take long at all touchdown pass to amir king on the other end for uiw could not have scripted it any better eric morris cody crew offensive coordinator putting pressure on the defense after a good couple of starts or starting plays by this lions defense heavy hitting his cardinals offense rebounds quickly [Applause] just chews up the field man that was a beautiful drive great drive extra point is up and good cameron ward third touchdown the strike right there to amir king and his 42-16 cardinals early second half 42-16 uiw they did not waste any time a well-scripted drive right there for the cardinals they go five plays 81-yard shade took him just a minute 23. that's how you do it well they did it in big chunk plays too randy and cameron ward on spot finding all of his receivers amir king used to be a running back here at uiw and he has moved into the slot receiver position great job of getting open finding the engines finding the end zone uiw will kick it off [Applause] their so the lions will get it now work to do [Applause] trailing 42-16 now [Applause] so you give up a touchdown late in the first half and then right off the bat your defense gives up another one that's a big blow right there for the southeastern's defense well it was 16-14 when they took the lead over uiw and now the cardinals haven't looked back since that time and went ahead on the next drive they've continued to pour it on offensively and converting turnovers and moses reynolds into touchdowns 28 unanswered points for uiwc with the lions yeah they can respond cole kelly pretty good protection but well covered down field by uiw pass intended for javon connor southeastern as we mentioned early in the broadcaster just tuning in missing their top two receivers in this contest cj turner and austin mitchell [Music] neither player made the trip to san antonio morgan ellison some guys not even on the depth chart not necessarily because it's not contributing but not only too deep and you know the lions right now are going deep deep in their uh resources of players [Applause] third down and ten lions trying to convert here o kelly over the middle pass is caught to connor he's still on his feet at midfield across to the 40-yard line of uiw shoved out of bounds around the 33-yard line so on third and ten a big pickup for this lions offense yeah connor doing a great job of taking and absorbing the hit cole kelly keeping his eyes downfield you see the hit there shakes him but doesn't knock him down and then great job of picking up yards after catch now lions offense deep in uiw territory connor again with the catch crosses the 25 down to the close to the 22-yard line yeah there's flashes a really good play offensively by the lions and this drive is highlighting a couple of those they're rotating a lot of guys in and out are the lions the first down [Applause] trying to answer back what uiw did on their first series defense though has to make some stops as this one progresses here today [Applause] cephas johnson has checked in [Applause] second and eight kelly that one falls in complete looking for marcus cooper and coverage on that one let's see who had the coverage for uiwa dalvin fillmore he's a safety getting not on the depth chart as well for uiw but he's in there making a stop on this drive third down and eight now [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] big third down here for this lions offense cole kelly needs to make a good pass pressure on kelly gets away from it he's got some running room left side down at the 10-yard line and that's going to be enough for a first down for southeastern yeah kalechiana lebecci coming in that linebacker spot put pressure on and actually had a hit on cole kelly take another look here good pressure coming up the middle but just those arm tackles are not going to bring down that 6-7 250-pound guy [Applause] second down goal to go now for the lions yeah good drive randy as you were saying and yes it's imperative for the lions to put a touchdown on the board we've got to find a way to get this ball into the end zone kovacs checking back in who had the opening score for the lions [Applause] [Music] [Applause] he has met inside the five down close to the two-yard line three cardinals converge on that one yeah that's a tough run there by the senior wide receiver takes the inside handoff and he just runs into a stone wall right there but at least picks up five yards putting it in now to a third and two you see connor coming off shaking his head man what happened o'kelly will keep it he's mad at the two and brought down quickly no gain on that play maybe a yard we'll see where they mark it well a great play defensively by jack petrie number 33. he's gonna go low on cole kelly but does a really good job of continuing to fight claw and crawl and get up and make sure that kelly does not pick up any additional yardage there and petrie i mean that's just a great open field tackle kelly looking pass is caught yes it was held on to touchdown for southeastern that's anthony spurlock they had to have it and the lions got it done here spurlock maybe was the third option as cole kelly took the snap looking around and looks off to his right hand side nowhere to go dials it back in and he just stays he locks on with spurlock smurlock keeps working his way to the middle and cole kelly throws a catchable ball down around the knees [Applause] spurlock can go down and pick it up for the touchdown on after up and good so both teams exchanging touchdowns to open this second half 42-23 now the score from benson stadium in san antonio uiw trying to stay undefeated [Music] you know randy you talk about cole kelly and on that fourth down play for the touchdown what a great job he gets a fantastic block by marcus cooper up ends the defensive end that allows cole kelly the time to look back inside and find anthony spurlock take another look at it a little play action pass there going down and selling out and doing exactly what your quarterback needs you to do to give him enough room to rip a pass downfield and get it into the end zone nice job there by marcus cooper a little confidence builder now for the lions and see if the defense can make some stops they have not been able to slow down this uiw offense cardinals bring it out [Music] good return there for uiwc who had the honors on that kickoff return that's uh sikori tolds again he had that pun return for a touchdown a couple of weeks ago of mcneese state flag is down now around the 25 yard line we'll see who that's going to be against yeah tolls is a he's a fun guy to watch on returns he can be to me like we saw what he did at mcneese i mean he's dangerous about there yeah he's got incredible incredible top end speed there is no foul on the play it's first down uiw and he gives a good great return here to give his offense great starting field position coach sofia wants to know why is there no foul [Applause] hadn't been explained to him yet boy he was in our conference call this week man he was just so fired up just to be playing football right now he said hey man ball is ball it doesn't matter if it's the fall or spring he said we're getting an opportunity to play some football here and try to get in a season looking for a win today needs to come back here there's ward and he'll step out of bounds around the 45 yard line that's pick up seven eight yards you know randy you see these defensive linemen lunging for him and trying to get to him his uh his awareness his spatial awareness of what's going on on the field is very very impressive we continue to say for a freshman but man he is making some really great plays timing-wise [Applause] and on [Applause] that's his first carry of the ball game quite impressive i mean again this cardinals offense they're gaining 15 yards in these chunk plays and now going deep again he's got a receiver downfield another diving catch and another touchdown this is jalen campbell on the other end from cameron ward and the cardinals strike again so after the great starting field position by sikori tolls i think that was a foreplay drive the cardinals eat up all that extra yardage and get it into the end zone [Music] take another look offensive line doing a good job of providing time and a little quick flick of the wrist throws it out there where his receiver can run under it jalen campbell doing a great job tracking down with that football 372 total yards in the first half so far in the second half they're now approaching 500 for the game well previous play under review take another look here camera stepping up in the pocket locks onto the receiver i'm just i'm wondering if they want to review it just to see how great of a catch he made yeah and hand was underneath the football didn't see it move after making contact with the ground should be a quicker [Applause] we'll take a look at it how about cameron ward today shea again putting on a clinic first half ran for a touchdown threw for three and now if this one holds up they're taking the second one yeah they're taking a much longer look at it than i thought that's good to get it right make sure absolutely after review ruling on the field is confirmed touchdown jalen campbell [Applause] he's having cameron ward as we mentioned over 300 yards through the air and now accounting for [Music] i believe six touchdowns now [Applause] five passing tds one on the ground for cameron ward continues to impress in his freshman season and one thing a great story yeah we're starting at the halftime stats too the uh the cardinals time of possession was was well below with the lions from southeastern had in right when you score and you have offensive plays your running plays are picking you up first downs every time you do it you're throwing passes and the receivers are catching balls and getting past the first down mark it you just eat up big chunks of the field that's why they call them chunk plays but man this cardinals offense is humming right now cameron warren doing a masterful job of leading it he's got great players around him but he is really putting on a show today [Applause] [Music] [Applause] number two in total yards is it number two total in total yards behind sam houston i believe so right yep yeah and uh they're well on their way to meeting and exceeding their average over 500 yards per contest at 372 in the first half and two impressive drives here in the second half already going to go along with that the halftime stats at least i mean it was within about three yards of each other their passing offense and their rushing offense when you have that kind of balance that is just a uh a really really takes a toll on the defense right you don't know what to defend you don't know you load the box to stop the run they're going to throw the pass you put people back to cover the pass they're going to run the football they're doing it extremely well right now the cargo first down loose ball yeah cole kelly lost control of it right there javon connor was right there to jump on it for the lions it's going to be an incomplete pass because he takes the ball and he's going to fake it to cephas johnson and then try to push it forward and he really didn't get enough push to get it into javon connor so incomplete pass no harm no foul second down to 10. [Music] [Applause] that's morgan ellison on the pitch out from cole kelly nelson's been held in check today came in uh 237 yards rushing in a touchdown it's been mainly marcus cooper today and taron jones that have seen most of the action for southeastern [Applause] [Music] they're down at six for southeastern they need a conversion there's ellison not much there well read by uiw that's isaiah paul right there to make the stop for the cardinals the cardinals are so aggressive on defense if you stop your feet you're you're dead you're dead in the water you're not going to be able to pick up any yards they're very good at tackling in space isaiah paul 6-2 210-pound guy can run like the wind hit like a freight train and there's really no opportunity to pick up the first down you stop your feet that play is dead lions punted away short kick catch is made by robert farrell good field position again coming up for the cardinals leading 49-23 third quarter here in san antonio 49-23 is your score uiw leading southeastern here third quarter after the short punt cardinals get it back on offense they have not wasted time at all and they pick it up again cameron ward first down and the strike to trey wolf over the middle down close to the 40-yard line yeah trey wolf what a game he's having he's made catches across the middle downfield in spectacular fashion taking big shots like he just did on that one but again about a 13 or 14 yard pickup on first down and offense on a roll [Applause] 41-yard line is where the line of scrimmage is [Applause] looking pressured he's brought down at the 50-yard line for southeastern that's going to be darius harry first sack of the ball game two and a half sacks now for the freshman this season well a great job of pushing the offensive lineman back into the area where cameron ward was and then he just never stopped harry just doing a great job of fighting off fighting through and getting in to come up with a big play defensively for the lions [Applause] well you see a pressure again coming on then chris mussani the defensive coordinator for southeastern putting pressure bringing guys in and making ward make a quick decision and throw the ball yeah good decision though throw it away third and 19 now [Applause] you need to get down to the 31 yard line yeah i think you got to do it again and it looks like they are fainting like they are going to the camerawork sitting back in the pocket with time to throw at fine receivers has not been a good recipe for this lions defense that was incomplete around 37. trying to find amir king in the crossing route had he been able to come up with that catch it still would not have been enough for the first down however the lions doing what they need to do defensively to get the ball back for their offense eric morrison company talking it over there with cameron ward what a game he has had [Applause] kevin will punt for uiw i think this might be his first punt of the game well this handles the snap southeastern right there to make the tackle lions are going to get it around the 35-yard line love the aggressiveness by frank celfo he's sending the house to come in on block this punt didn't really need to get it blocked because of the mishandling of the snap [Applause] but this is a full-on block yeah [Applause] lions fighting their way back into this ball game giving themselves an opportunity with good field position well they've got to score and score quickly down by 26 [Applause] first at 10 from the 38-yard line cole kelly quick release out to marcus cooper near the 32-yard line that's going to pick up probably close to six yards well an empty backfield for the lions offensively cole kelly back behind center and it was an easy opportunity for him to get the ball out quickly to marcus cooper nice positive yards on first down and cephas johnson checks back in the h-back spot [Applause] a little too high passing looking for nick kovacs there got a hand on it but falls incomplete so the third down and five facing the lions yeah kovacs at 6-3 not able to climb the ladder and bring that pass down he's got good hands made a couple big catches in this game so far that one just a little above his reach [Applause] talk with frank selfo he's just praising cole kelly he says hey this is his team he's taken over the leadership role he's very vocal not only with the offense but he'll get in there in that defensive huddle as well he just wants to win football games trying to lead him back today but that play is not going to happen sacked all the way back to the 42-yard line by uiw that's blaine hoover with the honors defensive end for the cardinals well kelly had a chance he pump faked it he's looking downfield and blaine hoover closing in on him takes a shot and is able to bring him down and he's still got kelly out on the field on 4th and 13th oh yeah you got to go for it here got to convert keep the drive going and get some points start chipping away at this deficit kelly oh javon connor draped by shawn holton i believe [Applause] fired up cardinal sideline out of the field they know how big a play that was connor the intended receiver that's well covered though got a hand on it yeah you can just see the hand on the jersey just a little bit of a tug on the back deshawn holton comes up with a big play defensively turns the ball back over to the cargo offense take a look at the south of conference scoreboard we've got one going on right now mcdeese and nakadish taking on northwestern state first quarter they are tied at seven cowboys trying to get their second victory of the season also uh tonight 6 p.m central time 7 eastern sam houston state number six in the nation in beaumont taking on lamar cardinals [Applause] knock loose we'll see what they roll it they're gonna rule an incomplete pass there hey speaking of lamar they've got a that's a big one with sam easton you and i saw lamar in lake charles an approved football team a young team and made some progress with that road victory well under head coach blaine morgan first year first victory when they won that game in overtime last weekend very similar to what we saw this cardinals often or excuse me sideline celebrate it was a big celebration in lake charles for the mar cardinals getting that first win of the season first play handoff that's kevin brown big third down here for this lions team third and about five they've got to get they've got to find a way to get off the field and give their offense the ball back [Applause] cameron ward true freshman what a start to his collegiate career this year [Applause] big games with a win in lake charles beaumont and now today here at home ward over the middle what a grasses caught wow what a grab took a hit as he delivered that pass and trey wolfe again comes down with a catch he's been busy today well none bigger than this one i know he's made a great catch in the end zone and a couple of other times but on third down when you have to convert he goes up climbs the ladder not an easy pass to catch the defender is right there wolf somehow comes up with the catch on that football hangs on to a great job of converting the fourth or the third down excuse me [Applause] another completion this time inside the 40. that's jalen campbell with the catch they're not holding back continuing to throw the football and hurry up offense that's their style though that's how they roll that's what they do and trey wolf checking back into the game slot receiver down on the bottom of your screen second down to two wards going to be brought down around the 42-yard line got a nice job bringing the blitz southeastern doing a good job of getting pressure nobody got out of their lane out of their gaps randy defensively and that forced cameron ward to step up into the pocket and he does it he just gets hammered by that defense carmen christoph in there on the one of the guys one of the couple of guys in there and offense and defensive lineman asking for each other's phone number so they can talk after the game if they want to go down the river walk maybe it's been physical since that opening quarter you pointed it out early in the game big hits both teams came ready to play [Applause] the ball for cambered ward they're going to roll in a touchdown that's darius now chaffin got a little bit of a push off there on a free play great job again by cameron ward knowing that there was all sides against the lions and let me look back and see on the end of that play chaffing able to get behind six to 200 pound targets number 21. the defense in the neutral zone at the snap penalty is decline ruling is a touchdown another touchdown the official took a close look at it there to make sure chaffin was in bounds here's a look at it again ward just lofted that one up there for him yeah you see look you know right before that you got a little bit of a push off there by chafing but wow look at that turning around doing a 180 picking that ball out of the air good job yeah not much not much of a push he did he definitely got the left foot down what a great play great catch six touchdown passes for cameron ward today one through on the ground as well five or six through the air seven touchdowns in all for the true freshman plenty of weapons on this offense this eric morris offense is rolling with 56 points and we still got 211 left here in the third quarter i don't want to say it was a pedestrian first half but man the second half in this third quarter the cardinals have shown up offensively and defensively look at the passing yards totals bailey zappy from houston baptist now they played a fall schedule so they're not playing the spring but you see right there eric schmidt at 397. cole kelly and there's cameron ward so look at that this is man not bad at all [Applause] wards got 381 yards so far today shea with work to do here love that but also like the touchdowns that he has thrown is it six now six six through the air one on the ground again a guy that was a fourth string quarterback when he arrived had to really work his way up and learn the spread offense they just raved about how quickly he learned the schemes and learned how to operate this offense and coach moore said basically we credit the extra time we got during the covet break because we would have workouts were up and down the field we'd have three offensive units going at the same time well of course they filmed all these reps and they would go back in the film room after practice and he just kept standing out to these guys on tape and it finally got to a point where they were going to play i think arkansas state before that game adventure got canceled and you know he knew at that point cameron moore was the guy that could count [Applause] cole kelly with some running room up the middle takes a hit down to the 35-yard line 36-yard line yeah i like that i like that design quarterback run cole kelly takes the snap one step back plants the foot straight forward for the first down picks up over 10 yards moving the chains good play [Music] pressure coming on kelly just gets it off in time he got some room damien dawson and he docks it all the way down to the 25-yard line he's a full back also plays a little tight end as well for southeastern his first action of the day how about the way that he caught this ball though look kelly under duress from ana lavechi and he flicks it just flicks it out there and dawson doing a great job of moving the ball downfield that's what this lions offense needs a little shot in the arm big jump plays [Applause] handoff marcus cooper running room left side knocked out of bounds around the 15. man he is a big running back really not big 5 8 170 pounds randy and my goodness i did not think he had a chance to pick up the first down he initially hits it up in the line of scrimmage and bounces it out wide and is fast enough and strong enough to pick up the first down that's impressive [Applause] cephas johnson checking in at the running back spot now johnson with the carry looking for a block he picks up a couple of yards on that one second down and eight so cephas johnson's really been active today ran for a touchdown he's filled in a few times for cole kelly but he's set up as a receiver in the backfield he can do it all for this offense you know it's kind of interesting for me for sebas johnson is when you put the backup quarterback in who's athletic you know you think that he's going to be the guy that's going to maybe do some kind of a trick play or something like that no he's not doing it he's running real offensive plays and taking real shots oh collision in the goal line trying to thread the needle to javon connor not able to happen mason barnes running into one of his fellow teammates take a listen here and conor's going man i'm glad i was in the middle of that i think who he ran into there but we heard it clearly from up here [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] makes a guy miss an open field he catches the ball near the line of scrimmage randy and then he's gonna make a move in the open field boom 360 turn and then comes out and picks up the first down impressive he's a physical guy too not just not just fleet of foot heavy load when he's running the football downhill [Applause] and off to morgan ellison that might be the last play of the third quarter i don't know they're going to try to get this one off here [Music] now they're going to signal a touchdown that's going to be on the keeper for cole kelly [Applause] that was a grind it out look we don't know if we're southeastern this is how i'm thinking coach cell voted we don't know if we're going to be able to win this game we're not going to quit right we're not going to quit and we're going to be physical and we're going to mash the football when we can and we're going to take those windows and those opportunities as we can and you got to like the way that that drive happened for southeastern and how they finished it off physical matter i love watching cole kelly come to the sidelines and he was barking around everybody firing everybody up he looked at that defense he said we got to make some stops guys if i read his lips right he's not giving up at all he's a gamer 56 to 30. you see the score hey got a lot of football left here the way these these two teams are scoring and how quickly they're doing it it's not over well you see the play the scoring drive excuse me the eight plays under just that two minutes but i love the way that the lions said look yeah we're not gonna let the quarter run out we're gonna we're gonna run an offensive play with four or five seconds on the clock if we think we can score and they did [Applause] very good drive good physical drive and big plays cole kelly leading that offense using all the weapons that he has and as you said earlier you mentioned a couple times missing two big time players still not slowing down this lions team and what their mentality is and you gotta appreciate that [Applause] [Music] gold still on his feet balls knocked loose out of bounds around the 45. [Applause] the break for southeastern but good field position coming up so corey toltz comes up hobbling as he runs back across the field [Applause] 56-30 three-quarters in the books here in san antonio fourth quarter coming up uiw control [Applause] 56-30. take a look at another johnston's classroom champion this time from uiw ozomo kerry 3.6 gpa master of business administration national society of leadership and success inductee dean's list member from spring of 2018. southland commissioners honor roll member 2017 through 2019 as well congratulations to our jostens classroom champions today uiw in control as we start the fourth quarter here in san antonio randy mcavoy shay walker lainey fritz with you all cardinals as they lead by 26 at this point number four mark is keeping it [Applause] second down coming up now for uiw [Applause] kevin brown picks up eight yards on a first down carry got some updated stats here and this one will filter out to you here second down in one [Music] [Applause] [Music] all right so on the day updated numbers from cameron ward 22 of 38 or 23 of 38 381 yards six touchdowns [Applause] he's also carried the ball seven times for 51 yards net of 38 actually one touchdown so he's accounted for seven so far today well what do you do for an encore i mean he had an amazing first two games where the cardinals are putting up big numbers big scores on the board cameron ward leading that offensive attack and kevin brown how about this one and another about three lions with him paul may have come out you see the lions thinking they have it and they do they get it kevin brown trying to do just a little bit too much on that run randy was in a [Applause] stranglehold of about three or four defenders ball finally got stripped out taken away and take another look here at the end of the play at the end of the run oh that was a great effort there [Applause] donnell ward mcgee the defensive back who we saw make a great play on special teams but also coming up big on that particular play right there to get the ball back to his offense provide the defense the play is under review [Applause] all right officials will take a look at that last play and while they do that cole kelly and the lions we'll huddle up on their sideline there's eric morris they've got a big one next week in thibodeau taking on nichols meanwhile for southeastern louisiana look at their schedule let's take another look here at the run randy as you see kevin brown going and donnell ward mcgee falls clearly out he starts tugging on it there it's brown's trying to grab it and go for extra yardage the ball is on the carpet and ward mcgee actually comes up with the recovery as well strip and recover the replay officials not feeling enough love today he's heard enough headsets coming off [Music] after review ruling on the field is confirmed first down [Applause] all right so southeastern gets the football now work to do with 13 51 to go left in this football game i mentioned look at his schedules they're going to have an off week next week before taking on lamar [Applause] on april 3rd then at nichols they'll close their season they've played one extra game so far to this point o kelly dumps it off marcus cooper still on his feet crosses the 40 brought down near the 45-yard line tackle made by blaine hoover what a nice run by marcus cooper we keep saying that about this guy again not overpowering by size but man he is a strong capable downhill runner [Applause] made a couple of guys miss on that play enough to pick up the first down again and that's the kind of plays that this lions offense needs cole kelly he's just throwing a check down pass out in the flat cooper takes a pretty pedestrian looking play and picks up a first down it's impressive getting helped off the field for uiwa [Music] [Applause] kelly takes a hit as he delivered that football ball is loose lane hoover doing an outstanding job defensively fighting off the block and taking a good angle to the drop of cole kelly number 11 as cardinals defense having a heck of a game take another look on the right side but you see he comes down and strips it down chance main cleans it up at the end but lane hoover is the one who forced cole kelly up into the pocket and also stripped the ball out [Applause] second down for southeastern connor not able to hang on to it he gets ridden out of bounds by elliot davison miranda when you're playing an aggressive team like uiw and as well as their defensive backs play when you get the ball in the hands you've got to pull it down and secure it i mean it's easy to say but that's one of the things that you must do so you can create positive plays davidson did a great job of coming down defensively but javon connor had could have pulled that ball down in the sideline with his feet in bounds kelly over the middle pass is caught actually they're going to rule the catch or no no no falls out that hit the ground that was javon connor around close to the 40-yard line open there on the hit fourth in a mile and we're going for it i like it 15 yards feels like a mile in case you were wondering they're looking at it right now it's got they've got a ways to go here they've got to get to the 44 of uiw expect pressure another hit ball comes loose lions are going to loose ball still looks like uiw might have it that's fourth down so it really doesn't matter but it's just where the spot is going to be cardinals defense mimicking their offense all kinds of pressure around cole kelly great hustle slapping the ball away and getting it out of his hands so he doesn't have an opportunity to get it downfield and the big man up front having a field day fans are having a good time here watching this uiw team 12 minutes 28 seconds away from a three-and-oh start to this season [Applause] [Music] all right first and ten for the 33 and off caleb ducross [Music] lions right there to make the stop [Applause] so randy the first game of the season that you and i were going to do was the opening week for the southland conference it was sam houston state at uiw right and that was during the uh the horrific freeze that hit texas in louisiana so that game was cancelled now it's been rescheduled i believe april 17 april 17th right which would be the last game of the season or is there one more after that should be the last one playoffs will start shortly you know a week after that national championship game will be played in frisco as always in may sounds weird saying that it does frisco does a fantastic job i'm not sure exactly which year they started hosting but it's been a number of years now they just love wrapping their arms around that event as a city that event has grown up just like frisco has it was a small town that's really booming now north of dallas ward looking downfield nothing there flag is down [Applause] that ball is going to be incomplete holding calls saw the jersey being stretched as cameron ward was maneuvering around in the backfield [Applause] holding number 62 of the offense penalty has declined it's fourth down [Applause] i don't think the you know you would think if you're doing declining the penalty to make it fourth fourth down and eight or seven that the team will come out and punt but where they are on the field it really is you know just a dead play excuse me the penalty creating an opportunity for the cardinals to see if they can pick up the first down on fourth and seven eight eight yards saw that triple threat stat update they have really delivered big time today oh great hustle defensively trey wolfe cameron ward and kevin brown [Applause] we'll take a break 10 40 eight to go fourth quarter 56-30 uiw leading here in san antonio south of conference football on espn is brought to you by levy recognition and by crystal clear imaging real print solutions real big results fourth quarter here in san antonio 10 48 left 56 to 30. uiw leading southeastern with the football once again need to make quick work trying to chip away at the deficit pressure on cole kelly and he's going down flag is also down around the 20-yard line right now for cole kelly the pressure is getting more intense see as he lost his helmet there and he's got to get rid of the football he's waiting a little it's just a hair or two too long to throw the football personal foul face mask number 91 of the defense 15 yards from the previous spot it's first down and that calls on darian townsend but again for kelly he's got to move the ball down the field he's got to find receivers and if they're if they're un or if they're not open or where he can't get to him standing in the pocket like that man it's just tough and you don't want your quarterback to take those kind of hits you see you've got three or four maybe five red jerseys around taking shots at it they push it all the way out to the 46-yard line after that 15-yard penalty pass is caught that's a nice job by connor connor's been busy today one of the top targets for cole kelly picks up the first down gets out of bound and stops the clock [Music] [Applause] kelly the keeper not much going there let's check in with laney fritz on the sidelines hey lady hey the louisiana southland schools have really come together this year with all they've been through after mcneese was completely devastated by hurricane lawyer laura excuse me coach shelfo said he instantly knew that he wanted to find a way to help so he asked his team if anyone would want to join him drive to lake charles to help out coach shelfo said you know of course he expected a handful of guys to step up and volunteer so he came that morning with donuts well he did not show up with nearly enough donuts 40 of his players showed up to volunteer they all loaded up supplies caravaned over to lake charles and served over 5 000 meals to lake charles community so he said it was at that moment when he knew he had a very special group here with the lions yeah that's a great story that he shared and uh yeah kudos to the lion for stepping up making it what two and a half hour drive to lake charles helping out their their friends but what laney said was is really key is that he knew he had a team right and when guys are selfless and and they show up when they don't need to or they're not supposed to or don't have to it's a big compliment and that means from a coaching perspective number 16 of the defense against an eligible pass receiver 10 yards from the previous spot first down the coaching staff you you know you've got something and you can build on something so this game does not look like it's going to go the lion's way right now but i can tell you this team hasn't quit this team is playing they're aggressive they're trying to execute their offense to the best of their ability and it's the same goes with the defense and i mean it's this is a good lion team kelly good protection pass is caught big hit ball comes loose they're gonna roll incomplete wow what brought the five-yard line yeah physical play back on the back end is that shawn holton again i mean he is made some big plays defensively cole kelly had forever and a day to get rid of the football finds a receiver but he gets knocked the ball gets knocked out i believe that was holton yep number 15. wow moses reynolds there to pick it up [Applause] that's right off the hands of morgan ellison [Music] rushes five guys randy which is what they did on that last play that speeds up the clock for cole kelly puts them in third and 10 now he's got to make a decision see if they dial up pressure again [Applause] wow what a great safety valve he has been all game long it looks like they're going to give him enough yards for the first down just thought he might have stepped out but [Applause] or no no he's gonna be a little bit shy i think by a yard okay yeah fourth and one now [Music] kelly will keep it and he'll get the first down that was a great team [Applause] wow cole kelly did a good job the off the defensive front excuse me was not in place for uiw on that fourth in the yard and cole kelly lugged it out but prior to doing that his head coach called timeout 905 left 4th quarter 56-30 uiw we're going to close it out here at san antonio back live 905 left fourth quarter fourth down and one now as we resume play for southeastern louisiana the last play they fell up a yard short after a nine yard pickup i need the conversion here [Applause] kelly will keep takes a hit and lunges forward for the first down wow cole kelly doing a little spin around and moving away from seth dracquez who made it into the backfield kelly lowers ahead spins around that's a nice move for a 6-7 250 guy did it well hand-off morgan ellison on his feet stretches out and they're going to roll touchdown for morgan ellison wow great effort there [Applause] head to speed sean holton tried to swipe his legs out from underneath but morgan ellison he averaged 10 yards a carry against northwestern state which they needed just tripped him up a little bit oh they're going to look at that one [Applause] they're going to look at that one [Applause] the previous play is under review doesn't minimize the effort there about morgan ellison looks like his knee he just got tripped up by the feet tried to keep his balance get the ball inside the pylon [Applause] another angle for this one on morgan ellison's carry [Applause] looks like his knee might have been down around the three-yard line so you see the swipe there and great job of keeping his balance and keeping everything going but and just right around the three yard line looks like the knee was down [Applause] yeah great camera work guys that's a heck of an effort there the ball carrier was down at the one yard line prior to crossing the goal line his second goal at the one yard line how about another pirouette by the six seven two fifty cole kelly they gots the call what do you think what's your prediction mr walker not yet it's second down give morgan ellis another opportunity or two after that last effort he deserves it again he'll get it but he'll be exactly that's his way as he is he's yes sir only fitting that he closes out after that last play that's the physical play that is emblematic of this lions team today that we're seeing randy he got hit short of the goal line but powered his way through two maybe three red jerseys a little cut back right there as he gets hit in the back look at that strong man leading it through baby yeah carry two defenders with him extra point attempt coming up now from ring of foe it's up and it is good [Applause] 56-37 now lions cut it to 19. 8 43 left here in san antonio southern conference football on espn is brought to you by ready nutrition official sports drink of the southland conference happy cardinal today for uiw they put up 56 points they lead by 19 with 8 43 to go here in this contest as uiw looks to go three-and-oh on this season and the lines showing on side kick and that forced a time-out by eric morris for uiw 69-yard drive took 205 off the clock offense doing its job defense just has not been able to find an answer for this uiw offense all day there's eric morris we've talked about the job he has done here at uiw former player coach different levels had a chance to coach quarterbacks like patrick mahomes case keenum when he was at u of h cliff kingsbury and here you know an offensive machine mike leach connection there he is as a player he's a scrappy receiver out there well you know called the smurf and he has done a tremendous job i think i'd say better than scrappy but what he's done here at uiw randy is just unheard of i mean it's such a turnaround such a dynamic that this team all right the ball is getting i guess it wasn't on the right of the line offside kick coming up [Applause] [Music] matteo riga not happy with himself after that kick not what he wanted well it didn't give his team an opportunity to go down and cover i like the boldness though in the no quit from this southeastern team [Music] [Applause] free kick out of bounds on the kicking team at least five yards from the out of bound spot first down there so the ball be marked at the 45 yard line for uiw [Applause] [Music] all right uiw shape you change anything you've done do you want to get out of this thing healthy and start running the ball more just stick to what got you to this point well i think you keep your offense going the same way i mean there's not almost nine minutes left in the game randy and you really look uiw has only played two games they've been off last week and they had two games prior so they don't have a whole lot of real fire reps going right now and if you want to finish out the season strong and stay undefeated i think you've got to continue to push it second down to 10 now for uiwa ward intended receiver looked like that was uh chaffin maybe yeah darion chaffin was the intended receiver there third down now still the 45-yard line [Applause] trey wolf's going to be the slot receiver on the top side of the screen coming back in motion now [Music] [Applause] [Music] plenty of time for ward looking down field frey wolf contact made flag thrown maybe an interference goal philando jordan gonna get called for that and oh actually two flags are down one in the backfield for the cardinals frank selfo out there arguing perhaps you know where some of that argument is coming from right he's did you i think i know some of the two fouls on the play personal foul chop block number 72 and number four of the offense pass interference number 27 of the defense fouls will offset replay third down i want to see how how well you studied your game notes there randy did you know that uh coach selfo coach at galena park north shore i did not know that he did not know that nor did i but i did my homework and looked through the through the notes and he was a defensive backs coach in 1995 and i was trying to remember the name of the coach it was david aymond yeah david aymond long time headquarters yeah wow so a lot of action on that third down play by uiw the ball will be marked short of the first down cardinals looking to punt the ball away [Applause] yeah trying to think what year north shore won a state title with bobby reed it would have been later than that i believe i think it's kind of around that time but that was david aymond's only state championship yep his son bug avon played safety there went on to play at oklahoma state [Applause] 734 left here in the fourth we'll take a break 56-37 uiw here in san antonio 7 34 left fourth quarter 56-37 uiw on top and they'll start on offense from their own 17-yard line kelly dumps it off marcus cooper takes a hit around the 24-yard line goes down i haven't seen the updated numbers on cole kelly but he's thrown for a bunch today and minus their top two receivers and cj turner and austin mitchell [Applause] kelly looking for nick kovacs yeah carl's not going to go the lion's way on there because kovacs was tight roping the sideline and the ball was about three to four feet over the top of his head [Applause] [Music] a big play for the lions offense to keep this drive alive [Music] third down and four cole kelly swarmed by the cardinals he'll go down about the 18-yard line delayed blitz randy by this cardinals defense flag is down by the way they had a good opportunity to come in and and get to cole kelly before he could go through the progression of his reads it's listening back from the blind side from his left [Applause] after play was over i'm supporting a lot of conduct number 79 of the offense let's have this to the goal that is his first of the game it's fourth down now cardinals stand to get good field position here and robert fennell farrow excuse me [Music] austin dunlap will punt it away he's in his end zone now farrell back around the 45. gonna hit at the 45. southeastern bounce near the 35-yard line [Applause] hey look at our hercules strong play of the game actually a couple of them to show you there's one of that loose ball there shade that kind of starts out bad for the cardinal offense but it turns up good because cameron ward gets the ball back and drops the dime right in the middle of three defenders to trey wolfe one of his many catches on today's game cardinals closing it out well at the end of the first half yeah then they marched it right down to open the second half as well trey wolf's had a massive day today as has cameron ward of course we've talked about him each week for this true freshman seems to be a breakout game stat line continues to improve across the board [Applause] eric morris really enjoys the way he attacks things he said we had to keep him out of the film room he was here all the time we said man make sure you're studying and he got his academics in order and he's done a nice job in the classroom as he settled into his freshman year well his understanding of the concepts of what cody cruel and eric morris want him to do uh he's i gotta say he's ahead of schedule yeah no doubt this is not probably not an easy office to learn either he's never operated in a spread until he got to college west columbia was a triple option offense and he did it well a little side note as well for cameron ward as we take a look at this replay take a look we talk about the maturity of him do you see how beautifully that ball was thrown it was leading robert farrell and it was a a great throw that had him where he did not have to stop his momentum at all but robert farrow couldn't have asked for a better ball coming from cameron ward perfectly thrown pass perfectly placed that allows him to pick up the first down quick side note on cameron ward as good as he could throw the football and operate an offense he's also the all-time leading basketball scorer in west columbia high school history so well-rounded all right there's another big gainer from kevin brown adding it to his big total today kevin brown was stopped behind the line of scrimmage hit low around the knee you see him reaching down on the knee take another look here he's going to get a hit right here boom unable to wrap up unfortunately for the lions defense and kevin brown bounces it back around outside and look at the great job of finishing off that play they're the numbers 12 carries 187 yards 15.6 per carry he's had several of those today the initial contact he bounces off of him and turned him into big gainers that's a good lesson defensively you're going to hit somebody you got to wrap them up that was justin douglas that hit ward on that last play behind the line of scrimmage and then he breaks it out and picks up 23 24 yards [Music] [Applause] and a little bit of confusion there by the cardinals maybe delay a game illegal substitution during the dead ball let's watch a lot of conduct number 15 of the offense 15-yard penalty remains first down that's number 15's first of the game but jalen campbell randy has had too good of a game and he is walking off the field now he's going into the field house i guess that's where coach moore sent him but yeah when you're when you're up 56-37 and you know the game is under control and you got to keep your emotions in check and i think that's exactly why coach moore sent it to the locker room made a feline to the field house the gail and tom benson field house here uiw [Applause] [Music] yeah he was walking off pleading his case and with his left hand eric morris just signaled pointed towards that field house we'll talk about it later under four minutes left now uiw taking their time eating a lot of clock up here on their way to a 3-0 start big one next week for the cardinals at nichols in thibodaux [Applause] pass is caught trey wolfe again second and 22 and he picks up 12 15 yards on that not put the down marker in yet wow [Applause] 14 on that run after catch trey wolfe [Applause] third down down to eight for uiw to get down to the 23-yard line eric morris calling a timeout [Applause] second charge timeout uiw it's 30 seconds [Applause] take a look at our southland strong player of the game jay walker for uiw guess who well deserved cameron certainly is the numbers are really mind-boggling we keep talking about this freshman but the way that he makes plays his understanding of the concepts the skill position guys that he has on the receiving end of the football kevin brown doing his magic running and you think great plays like that by darren chaffin a lot of weapons on this cardinals the leader of that pack is cameron ward there he is out of west columbia texas west columbia high school getting a lot of attention coming out of high school and a lot of people actually felt like he fell through the cracks on recruiting but eric morris and his staff spotted him and said you know what he's got the athletic ability we think we could turn into a spread offense kind of quarterback they were right on so far so good that was going to be incomplete around the 18-yard line looking for mark sullivan one of the back-up receivers actually backs up jalen campbell so he's in there for campbell who was sent to the field house by coach eric morris a few minutes ago i like that move by coach morris you know now it's not the time to hear explanations you did something that we don't want done take it to the house not the way that we want to be as a team don't put your don't put your teammates at [Music] [Applause] a risk under thrown there around the 10-yard line looking for trey wolf [Applause] ball converts over on fourth down lions will get another opportunity with 252 left are you surprised trey wolf didn't come up with that catch he's done it all day catching it all day caught everything else hadn't he fun offense to watch hey credit the southeastern offense as well they put up 37 points against a very good defense right exactly southeastern's gonna have a bye week next week and then take on lamar see where they finish lamar and then they'll finish at nichols april 10th [Applause] take a look at uiw schedule what's coming up they're going to hold on for a victory today to go 3-0 sets up a big one next saturday morning at 11 a.m at nichols they'll make the road trip to thibodeau take on the colonels it'll return home and close out the year shea at home northwestern state april 10th and then the rescheduled game with sam houston state they were scheduled to play back during the ice storm week that hit texas and they'll make that one up on april 17th so one more road game back home for two try to close it out well they've had a heck of a season so far great start a great start to the season with those two wins now getting their third win on the season and more importantly undefeated in the conference race and that game against sam houston state the way that the bearcats handled the nichols colonels right uh defensively uh you know trace mascara along with a bunch of other guys on that bearcat defense that are just powerful guys big time players he knew he didn't want to be bouncing it outside right and he was able to pick up first down by maybe half a yard good enough to move the chains and that was a good job on third down passes caught around the 37-yard line and good throw salon weber coming up with another good grab in between a couple of defenders that play has been open for this lions offense when cole kelly has the time to look down the field and make that play nick kovacs out of bounds around the 22 clock stops with 209 left [Music] [Applause] randy i like the grip of this lions team and that that's a a good indication of their head coach and the assistants on this staff but these guys aren't giving up they're in they're making plays they're competing absolutely [Music] zero for uiw [Applause] kelly looking in the corner for terrell carter a little too much on that one [Music] got a cardinal on the field here around the 20-yard line that's darian townsend and he's holding his left leg it might be cramped i'm not sure but he's grabbing that left side [Applause] southeastern will fall to two and two and a three-and-oh start for uiw [Applause] look at the numbers the single game passing yardage for southeastern over the years and there's cole kelly there at the bottom of the screen to get sam houston february 27th there's over a thousand yards of offense in that game between the bearcats and lions eric schmidt of sam houston state [Music] 430 that that's pretty representative and that interception i mean it was a that ball was deflected and bounded up high in the air well moses reynolds actually pulled it down so pretty good game pretty clean game by cole kelly and you understand now he's completing 65 of his passes right oh and ellison what a good run that is yeah handoff to morgan ellison held in check pretty good not not as much playing time as we anticipated coming into this one today it's been more marcus cooper and taron jones ellison their leading rusher entering today he gets the handoff again and fights his way down close to the one-yard line blaine hoover and anna lebecchi coming up on the tackle yeah a little bit of shoving around defense does not want to let guys score late randy that's a fact lions using a timeout regoop and regather and i remember just as you do randy that last touchdown run by morgan ellison was impressive he was hit in the backfield by two defenders right and he drug both of them two yards over the goal line powerful runner at 6'3 230 pounds make that 6-1 230. good weapon to have in the backfield two fun teams to watch here today very deep group of talent in the southland conference this season all right first and goal now from the 2-yard line there's kelly [Applause] very similar signals a touchdown here it was a very similar play to what we saw earlier from uiw so it's just running that little quick flash out and connor briggs got it over got the signal for a touchdown bring on the field is a touchdown catch a quick arc out he had it extended good hustle on the play again by sean houlton that guy's only a sophomore we've called his name a lot for this cardinals defense so all you got to do is break the plane right [Applause] 56-43 now we'll go for i think it could be two false start here falstar number 54 offense it's five yard penalty the try will be played from the eight yard line so coach morris way out of his box he's down on the 15-yard line he still wants that play reviewed on the touchdown there's kelly looking looking pressure's coming he's going to try to run it in he takes a hit around the two does he make it in he's got the signal that he got it in two-point conversion for cole kelly [Applause] and a lot of time to throw the football did not see anybody open so he tucked it and ran took the hit and still crossed the point well a lot around that he tried and he wanted to do his best but you see the arm extend out and land over the goal line in the end zone coach moore's not happy about that again he's still barking a little bit at the officials right now but cole kelly makes a good play takes the shot extends the ball out again all you have to do is cross the point and he did [Applause] gold kelly as advertised coming into this one 6-7 260 senior the leader of this football team without question coach frank selfo did not even hesitate when he was talking about the leadership that he brings to the table on-site kicks will be recovered by uiw around the 45-yard line sal easter's got one timeout left minute 14 to go numbers for cole kelly here they are 38 of 60. 431 yards three touchdowns one interception today what a day for cole kelly and he did that without his top two receivers what did you say earlier in the game 39 catches those two top two receivers on this offense man back at hammond pretty impressive good outing by cole kelly [Applause] and good job by the wide receivers stepping up spurlock kovacs javon connor tough duty coming in to play one of the best teams in the country not just the conference inside a minute now ticking down and be a winning saturday for uiw [Applause] well combined between ward and cole kelly today 400 plus so approaching a thousand yards of offense through the air [Applause] that's gonna do it as the clock winds down there's coach selfo he'll meet eric morris and shake hands there at midfield [Applause] a lot of respect between these two and uiw goes to 3-0 [Music] and a second loss for southeastern here in the southland conference it's been a great day here in san for antonio walker laney fritz and our great crew i'm randy mcavoy saying so long from the alamo city where once again the final score uiw 56 southeastern louisiana 45 all games airing on the espn network are streaming live and archived on the espn app this has been a presentation
