hello welcome again to brookings and jackrabbit football on midco sports south dakota state back in the missouri valley football conference this week taking on southern illinois and welcome inside dana j dykao stadium tom neiman along with al bahi great to have you with us here and alan just a great match up here for both squads the salukis come in at four on one they're only lost so far at kansas state in the big 12 and the jacks at 4-0 right now just trying to keep it rolling you know both these teams really expecting big things from here on out in valley conference play today's gonna be a true test of that tom these two teams ranked number two for south dakota state number seven for southern illinois coming in great offenses very efficient putting up points defense is going to be the key speaking of those offenses let's take a look at the tail of the tape here and both teams up at 38 points a game plus the two highest scoring teams thus far in the missouri valley football conference but south dakota state through its first four only giving up nine points a game defense i mean their defense really hasn't first unit has not given up a point tom in the last three games the the points that have been scored against them have come against second and third string defenses so this top unit of defense for the jackrabbits has just been solid it's not a long history but the recent history has been really good we'll get into that as we go along this is the third meeting between these two teams in the last seven months jax and the salukis kick it off when we come back here's today's tailgate tip from south dakota beef [Music] welcome back inside dana j daikou stadium in brookings the new home of the jackrabbits for six seasons now and the jacks and the salukis from southern illinois about ready to get at it southern illinois a couple of wins already in the missouri valley football conference with wins against illinois state and an overtime win at western illinois last week south dakota state a win against indiana state on the road and this is the second valley game now of this fall season for south dakota state jackson 4-0 coming in and the salukis at four and one south dakota state won the toss and the jackrabbits will take the football to start the game jax crowd showing up again al bahi the student section might be a little light this weekend as you said because of a three-day weekend no school on monday but and the first chance that they've really had since the fall semester started to get back home for a long weekend uh also here in south dakota there is a public land pheasant hunting season open this weekend tom so you see some orange in the crowd here morris costumes because the other folks are actually out in the field today but the last couple of weeks the uh crowds have been 13 over 14 000 here at dana j daikou stadium and another good showing by the jackrabbit fans here today [Applause] nico gualdoni will set it down for southern illinois [Music] tyler feldcamp the true freshman from sioux falls roosevelt high school one of the deep men there's ammar johnson as well [Music] [Applause] and a big test today for south dakota state in the first four games of the year aldi jax beat teams that have a combined record of six and 12 at this point in the season so southern illinois presents a huge test and it is breezy little breeze coming at our cameras across the field might get a little sprinkle of rain you know what i'm talking about the preparation coming into this game there was a question to ask of coach john stiglemeyer do you approach practice do you do anything different than what you have done in the past and his response basically was my my assistant coaches who told me coach it's business as usual we have to do what we need to do and keep our focus on playing the best football we can it doesn't matter who lines up on the other side of the line of scrimmage well done he gets into it touch back to get it started and that is a little bit of shift in philosophy from years past the jacks used to that coaching staff used to build up big games and now they've just tried to stay a little bit more even saluki defense mikel calhoun one of the linebackers leads him out there these guys can get after 16 sacks in the first five games for southern illinois chris oledokan the grad transfer quarterback for the jackrabbits 63 completions 180 yards per game and 11 touchdowns no interceptions [Applause] yet through four games for the jackrabbits and here we go with the throw on first down and in rhythm get it out to jackson yankee who spins ahead out to just shy right at the 40-yard line and a jackrabbit first down in the first play tom one of the things that the jackrabbit offense is going to try to exploit the corners for southern illinois have a tendency to give some cushion and play back so i think you're going to see some of those hitch routes just as we saw on the first play from scrimmage there the other thing that that softer defense could do at the corners is open things up for the underneath routes and the tight ends that have been so effective for the jacks starters there brought to you by dakota bank the yankee twins along with canyon bauer and the starting three wide receiver core pierre strong ahead for close to 10 on his first carry and that is one of the stories on this running back for the jacks averages almost nine yards at carry this season [Music] and the defensive saluki starters brought to you by dakota bank anthony knighton at one of the defensive ends his second all-time in sacks at southern illinois bryce notre leads him in tackles and the secondary for the salukis two plays two first downs for south dakota state olodokin a little delay to pierre strong and he is taken down for a loss on a play by pj rule or pj jewels excuse me one of the corners for southern illinois [Music] salukis defense on that side knighton a great job at the defensive end as a big fella there the other one to keep an eye on is number 92 jordan bremmer burner excuse me for the salukis he will move around to different spots on that defensive line you'll also see no tree who you talked about earlier in certain passing situations move up into a rushing position up on the defensive line for southern illinois second and eleven salukis drop safeties just gonna get it to strong out of the backfield and a short game got about four is gonna bring up third and seven for the jacks good open field tackle by the salukis pierre strong jr is a difficult man to bring down when you get him an open space but time for ole dokin and then he checks down and you see a nice like i said open field tackle there by jakari patterson to keep pierre strong from gaining more than the the four yards he picked up third and seven strong motions out three receivers to the right of our dog and looks that way trying to go back across the middle of the field just flips it and a one-hand grab is made by zach heinz for the first down on third and long that's just an outstanding catch by heinz at the end but look at the start of this watch the block in the middle of the screen burger gets pushed right back oladokin and pancake and then chris just rolls out and a nice big left mitt one hand to catch by zach heinz heinz kind of build a reputation for that coming up big on third down coming up big at the goal line six catches on the year is all but he's got three of those for touchdowns and another conversion for the jacks little trick going back the other way to yankee and the salukis for the most part stayed home on that side it's gonna be a gain of about seven yards but [Music] from both of these teams this afternoon going to see a little bit of this both of these offenses are going to show a little creativity and here you see that reverse pitch to yankee following the lead block on the outside but the corners stay home for the salukis to turn him back inside where the help comes to stop him but still a gain of seven on the play for the jacks [Applause] [Music] [Applause] just inside the red zone tucker craft motions left second and short for the jacks gonna give it to pierre strong first down ten five cuts it outside touchdown jack rabbits no flags and south dakota state on its opening drive right down the field on the touchdown by pierre strong well again that run off the left side behind mason mccormick aaron johnson your left guard on your left tackle they had a lot of success running that way last week against dixie state here the same thing look at pierre strong jr get to that second level before there's a hand on him nice block at the five yard line by canyon bauer but i think strong was going to find the end zone either way to put the jacks on top [Applause] whole from on for the extra point attempt and he stays perfect on this season 7-0 south dakota state strong on that opening drive three carries 29 yards [Applause] so the average just under 10 and he takes it the last 20 right here and mason mccormick out there with a block tuck your craft out there with the block that's west gennan the center with a block downfield again that left side and then you said janant also does a great job getting out you've got some experience out there aaron johnson goes six six three hundred he's the senior mason mccormick six four three tana junior and then janet after he made the snap three hundred six four senior and those guys getting down front have been leading the charge and allowing this jackrabbit offense to put up some pretty impressive numbers on the ground this season 75 yards on the opening drive [Music] but we talked a little bit in the open now this is the third game in the last seven months between these two teams they played back in march in the fcs spring season south dakota state wanted carbondale 44-3 but then they ended up meeting here in brookings in the fcs playoff game and southern illinois had a lead through most of that ball game south dakota state had to come back late and won it 31-26 well the salukis actually led that game at halftime 20 to 10 before the jacks came out and scored 21 unanswered points in the second half took that 31-20 lead the salukis scored with about five and a half minutes left and then forced the jack rabbits to pump the ball back to them southern illinois had a chance at the end of that ball game through an interception that michael griffin picked off at the nine-yard line with 13 seconds left in that contest to seal the win for the jackrabbits but yes two totally different games between these two teams last spring and really we're seeing two different teams here again now just six and a half seven months later yeah nick baker did not play in either of those games against the jacks but he won the starting job stone levanowitz was the starter here when they played last time he is not in the program any longer and baker takes over a qb and on the first carry jack rabbit's swarming on the run by justin strong [Applause] and it will be a no gain on the opening carry the codabank starting lineups up front for southern illinois and they are without their starting center calvin francis is out for this one so jimmy wormsley a sophomore takes over at center talented wide receivers but they are missing one of their best as well here this afternoon is avonte cox is not in the lineup after a shoulder injury last week jackrabbit starters brought to you by dakota meg winkelmann sanders ward and hicks are the first four in a heavy rotating defensive front backus the fifth year senior adam bach has been really good stalberg was a safety they made into a linebacker this year and then the veteran safeties in mancheguy and griffin with gaels and lofton at the corners third and four baker little room in front of him gonna try to get it with his legs jack's come up and knock him down just shy of the first down adam bach from his middle linebacker position was the one that came over and made the first attempt on baker and then you saw the reinforcements come up and lock him down but good pocket protection there by the salukis coverage was excellent downfield and there comes uh the jackrabbits with a hat going rolling off to the sidelines to make the stop bringing up fourth and one for southern illinois reese winkelmann got out there from the defensive end spot he and stalbert on the stop so jack cahoon [Applause] [Music] to punt it away tyler feldcamp back inside his own 30 hardliner look at this rocket from cajon it's going to stop inside the five yard line and the football is dead at the one wow [Music] up in south dakota [Music] [Applause] [Music] welcome back to brookings south dakota state scores on its opening possession a 20-yard touchdown run by pierre strong but jack cahoon the saluki punter just flipped the field and then some of the 65-yard punt that ended up the one-yard line of the jackrabbits and sdsu just trying to get it off the goal line [Music] running in there again behind eagan lincus get it up to the five well a big early test here for southern illinois defense tom if they can force a three and out they turn themselves into pretty decent field position if they can force the jack rabbits to punt after the gain of four on first down they've got two more stops to make oled okay with strong right behind him donkey left they'll go to strong gets across the 15 got the first down all the way out to about the 17-yard line [Applause] he's a tough man to bring down he doesn't need much of a hole at that line of scrimmage takes that hand off look at the seam he's got to the left and he is a north south runner and he got going south in a hurry [Music] four carries 41 yards right now for pierre strong salukis trying to punch it up the middle tucker craft the catch and the run and another big chunk of yardage for the jackrabbits out across the 30-yard line when you have the ground game going and they focus on pierre strong jr on the play-action fake to the right rolling to his left and the tight end production continues for the jackrabbits [Applause] tucker craft came into the game the leading receiver for the jacks with 16 catches he and heinz with the grab already and the jacks quickly from their own one-yard line out to the 31. fake to strong ole dokin looking deep he's got jaden yankee and he's inside the 20 with the grab that was just an outstanding throw by ole dokin he had one-on-one coverage deep down the field yankee is a strong receiver he's going to go after that and if you've got a one-on-one at the corner the jackrabbits basically any offense tom is going to take that shot any time olodokin rolling out to his right here he takes a bit of a hit at the end here from behind but he puts it out there and yankee simply goes up and gets it great play and a huge play for the jackrabbit offense [Applause] sauce brothers crafting heinz flipping over to the right side first down jacks quickly moving from their own one ole dokin still got it to the 15 the 10 and knocked out at about the seven yard line again with the defensive attention being focused on pierre strong you're gonna see some of that little trickery and that's just the keeper designed play for ole dokin to fake that handoff and he had some space to the outside before he got chased down and out of bounds [Applause] you don't see very many 99-yard touchdown drives jacks trying to put one together here only dokkan after a terrible start against dixie state where he missed his first seven passes five of five so far here you know that's one of the things we talked about is the jack rabbits need to get off to a fast start offensively today and they have done exactly that i think they were feeling a little bit embarrassed about the way that first quarter went for them against dixie state maybe they weren't mentally sharp and prepared for that defense obviously kept him in the game and and uh they were able to bounce back here's a nice defensive play by the salukis as strong tries to slip that to the outside not able to do so kevin glation there on the stop for the salukis brings up third and one from the eight yard line south coast state has been perfect in the red zone 20 of 20 in the red zone 16 touchdowns on those carries and they kind of blew the connection here ole dokin kept it went ahead it looked like for first down yardage and then it goes backwards and he did he fumbled [Music] i haven't seen any uh ruling from the officials yet now comes up with the football southern illinois that play had some problems from the beginning as you saw strong and oled okay and going different directions and then ole dokin just decides to keep it now here's the replay does that ball come out you can see him reaching forward and hard to tell where his knees are as he got wrapped up but that ball definitely comes out zach barola made the hit and i believe quay brown came up with the football for southern illinois so that is the first turnover lost by the jacks this season and it comes inside the saluki 10 yard line nick baker and southern illinois go back to work [Music] [Applause] got about a yard [Applause] right back to him trying to slip to the outside josh mancha gaia coming up along with bach to make this stop and it'll be third and three so the quick no-huddle offense by the salukis is putting a little bit of pressure on the jack defense right now the salukis trying to build off that momentum the fumble recovery facing third and short here they're converting at a 40 rate so far this season coming into this game oh of one in the early going in this contest rollins emotions in and out baker on a little delay needed to get across the 20-yard line and he is right at the marker [Applause] and they will move the sticks first down yeah like you said just to delay it as the quarterback draws the call he got hit two yards short but was able to move himself forward and get that ball out just past the 20-yard line actually it's marked right on the 20-yard line for the first first down of the game for the salukis landon lenoir goes out in the slot number 17 is their leading receiver 29 catches in five games for lenoir i haven't targeted him yet trying to keep it on the ground adam bach coming over from that linebacker position really put a hard shot first man to make the hit on javon williams the ball carrier you see williams heading to the sideline there as he took a pop from number 32. [Music] [Applause] there's the colonel caleb sanders who has been a menace at the defensive tackle spot two and a half sacks [Applause] on the season so far for sanders second and nine for baker straight drop a little pressure out of the backfield and that is williams javon williams with the catch and it's going to be third and five stallberg up on the stop for south dakota state sanders was coming right up the middle on baker and adam bach excuse me on the tackle there but third and five from the 25 michael griffin the sdsu safety cheating over to the right side of the jackrabbit flag comes in this is a jack rabbit secondary that had four picks last week against dixie state and uh played their coverage very well in the secondary offense number 76 five-year penalty second down oh brandon the left tackle gets whistled there so third and ten now back at the 20. empty out the backfield five receivers four receivers anyway coming this side looking for javon williams and after the fumble the jackrabbit defense holds [Applause] daishon gales in coverage that time [Applause] jacks again without don gardner their senior cornerback was injured in the game at indiana state and had an eight-week prognosis a couple of weeks ago on his availability another 65-yard pond here would put the jacks back at their own 15. here's cahoon again and he fires another one down about the 40th south dakota state but there is a flag right where the kick was released and we'll see if this is a five-yard variety or not i gotta believe it's five i mean there was there were two jackrabbit defenders that bumped into cahoon but i don't believe either one of them was enough to warrant the 15-yard penalty it would certainly be the five running into the kicker [Applause] running into the kicker receiving team number 11. penalty has been declined result of the play first down for south dakota state timeout on the field so the jacks will just take it at their own 41-yard line when we come back seven nothing jack rabbits late in the first quarter [Music] farmers union insurance simply different [Music] [Music] welcome back to 444 to go opening quarter in brookings south state leading southern illinois seven nothing jack scored on their opening drive oled dokkan slinging it out again to tucker craft his second catch ole dokin has hit his first six passes again he was looking a little further downfield initially and then craft released out in that left flat just a quick out oledokan has been on the money here this afternoon for his first six attempts 113 yards on his six completions jack spring heinz off bring canyon bauer back on in a three receiver set and this is gonna be a first down grab again by tucker craft rambling inside the southern illinois 40-yard line [Applause] play action pass again good pocket protection that offensive line has done such a good job for ole dokin and kraft after he makes the catch turns up field most of these tight ends are not going to be the ones that will run out of bounds they're going to lower his shoulder and try to pick up a few more yards three targets three catches for kraft and sdsu moving the ball again heinz back in he's gonna try a little crack down block appear strong some room but got about three yards [Applause] bryce no tree and calhoun in on the stop [Music] strong was fighting a knee injury most of last season healthy as ever he says this fall season and he just looks as quick as he's ever been over 3000 yards already in his jackrabbit career second at six back to strong bouncing spinning got the first down across the 25-yard line but again just a tough runner gets to that second level doesn't get hit until he's past the line of scrimmage which tells you that jack rabbits are winning that battle on the uh the trenches right now and then as you talked about tough bouncing spinning to get more yards after contact clayton bush the safety up on the stop but the jacks have moved in now from their own 41 to the saluki 24 yard line and gonna take their time here as the final seconds of the quarter wind down first down ole dolkin to throw and too strong in the first miss for ole dokkan as jaden yankee was out there trying to take that shot deep down the right hand side to get them inside the tent but it's also a throw that you want to make sure either your guy catches or nobody does because that's a long ways across the field from the far hash mark you don't want to leave that one hanging up there and olodokin fired it mason layton jackson yankee [Applause] to the right nobody open ole dokin tried to put it down and run but he is run down by colby coleman who drags him down no games can be third and about nine for the jacks to start the second quarter south dakota state up seven [Music] welcome back to dana j dykhouse stadium start of the second quarter and south dakota state will have it third and nine at the southern illinois 23-yard line jax and the salukis and everybody else in the missouri valley going this afternoon north dakota state in northern iowa playing up in fargo south dakota and north dakota playing down in vermillion check some scores coming up at halftime but right here the number two and the number seven teams in the stats fcs rankings this week excuse me southern illinois eight in the stats they're seven in the coaches poll that big third down here again for south dakota state pierre strong was out motions back in the dolken looking for yankee trying to come back for it on the back shoulder and that is defended well and broken up by david miller for southern illinois and that'll bring cole from on for a field goal attempt miller also lobbying for what he thought was offensive pass interference on jackson yankee at the end of the play to push off but yeah the back shoulder throw there just outside again to the sideline jack rabbits unable to convert on their third third down attempt of the afternoon just one of three so we're looking at a 40-yard field goal attempt by cole from from the middle of the field and that was jules in coverage for the salukis bigger pardon so from from 40 he is six of eight on field goal attempts so far this season and he bangs that one through and the jacks come away with points 10 nothing sdsu early second quarter 10-0 south dakota state in this top 10 fcs showdown in brookings after the cole from field goal from knocks the kickoff through the end zone touchback salukis will have it but thus far it's been pretty one-sided offensively south dakota state has run 21 plays 200 total yards for the jacks southern illinois run nine plays for 24 total yards so far and one of the things nick mills where nick miller would like to see out of his saluki offense is what he calls the explosive plays tom and he's looking for gains yards of plays of 15 yards or more the biggest play longest play they've had so far is a six yard run by romero elliott and a six yard completion from baker [Applause] to rollins as well so they have not had what they call their chunk or explosive plays yet we always expect to see some sort of creativity out of his offense so we'll see if if we see that on this possession by these salutes [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] all right nick baker sets him down at the 25. stripped away by stalberg and came before the whistle i believed it looked like xavier ward got on top of it for the jacks and it's sdsu football first contact wrapped him up watch the replay left side of your screen as elliott loses makes his move to the outside stall bird gets in there and rips that ball out clearly before he hits the ground as the first hit by reese winkelmann had him wrapped up which allowed isaiah stallberg to come in and make the strip and stallbird moved in from the secondary of the jackrabbits a year ago into that linebacker position when they needed to fill a spot [Applause] xav reward the south dakota kid defensive tackle on the recovery at the 19-yard line of the salukis so the turnovers even out at one a piece both teams have lost a fumble mike morgan comes in as the lead blocker for pierre strong but he's going to throw it touchdown jayden yankee and the jacks go right to it after the turnover and turn it into the touchdown from 19 yards we talked about a little bit of a wrinkle that we might see on offense we have seen pierre strong take that pitch and throw back the other way across the field in a previous game to chris oledokan that went for a touchdown this time strong looks like he's gonna hunker that down and carry it pulls it up and hit a strike to yankee in the end zone for his second touchdown pass of the season for pierre strong two for two throwing the ball for strong he's got two touchdowns had to throw back to olodokin at indiana state jaden yankee with his fourth touchdown grab of the season from pumps it through 17 nothing south dakota state [Music] welcome back 25 seconds into the second quarter here south dakota state with a field goal and now a touchdown off the saluki fumble jackson had it in the red zone twice two touchdowns [Applause] from again gonna send it through the back of the end zone will be a completion right at the line of scrimmage maybe a yard graham spaulding in coverage for the jacks jaron rollins on the catch for southern illinois and it's a gain of one [Applause] [Applause] [Music] linebacker spots right now jack's trying to get after baker flush him out his gaels will come out and baker tried to get rid of it once he got out of bounds [Applause] i'm pretty sure he was out of bounds before he threw the ball back there there's no foul for intentional grounding with the receiver in the area third down now he must have got it off right before he stepped out but it is still third and nine there was no gain on the play so after five consecutive running plays on their previous drives the salukis come out and throw the ball two times right away here in this drive [Applause] tice daniel the tight end coming out wide right baker going to find him coming back at the 30. and south korea state swallows him up after a gain of about six [Applause] well the win for the salukis there tom was positive yardage because their offense had really struggled but at least they moved the ball down they're still facing fourth and three three consecutive passing plays two incompletions and then a six yard gain on third and ten but still ending up in a punt position jack cahoon trying to flip it again tyler feldkamp would like to receive one of these but kahoon does it nicely again that rolls inside the 20-yard line the jack defense tom as we have seen from their games early in the season really stepping up to the occasion when they need to shutting down offenses forcing the three and outs keeping the opponents pinned deep now that the jackrabbits start at their own 19 but still not bad field position all things considered and this jackrabbit offense has looked potent this afternoon tucker craft setting up on their left side fake to strong ole dolkin taking a shot jaden yankee coming back to drag it in and he's down at the 35-yard line again and then match up with david miller but a couple of bombs to jaden yankee the first one went for 52 yards again that play action pass and then that one-on-one situation deep down the left side yankee makes a diving catch inside the 40 to the 35-yard line miller you may have seen on the live play came up looking for offensive pass interference there's no flags on the play that's two times the saluki corners have been looking for that flag and not gotten it strong weaving down to the 30-yard line taken down by quay brown the safety but another four yards on first down jaden yankee by the way three catches 117 yards already he's had a 52-yard grab and a 46-yard grab there is big giannini bellazari the defensive tackle [Applause] freshman for the salukis kind of in that matchup with west jeanette right over the middle all kinds of time for ola dokken and just out of the reach this time jaden yankee again well we talked earlier on in this game tom the jack rabbits were gonna have some opportunities down the middle of the field as the corners play some some soft coverage shot at the end of the play but that one just over the fingers of jaden yankee what would have been his second touchdown catch of the game the first one came from pierre strong jr on the halfback pass on the previous possession great block on the right side of that line by garrett greenfield for the jacks but it is third and six morgan the tight end out there lead blocking for jackson yankee making a couple of moves anthony knighton comes and takes him down at the 26. and that is short of the first down by a yard that same play last week against dixie state went for about a 40-yard gain as yankee had some opening on that screen but you can see the saluki defense was ready for it [Music] jax tried to go quick there and try to pick up the fourth and one but southern illinois called the timeout sdsu moving the ball to the tune of 274 total yards almost 200 of that coming through the air for ole dokin and a big chunk of that with jaden yankee in previous matchups with southern illinois tom the jackrabbits have had so much success running the football today it's been through the air in fact the last two games between these two teams which were early this spring the jackrabbits have rushed for over 600 yards total in those two games today they come in and they're airing it out now with 199 yards passing here and we're not even midway through the second half for the second quarter pierre strong eight carries 56 yards again it's fourth and one ole dokin comes up and they did this against dixie state last week and snapped it right away but southern illinois i believe comes across the jacks did not move up there [Music] defense number 54 with contact that five-yard penalty results in the first down well they call it a no tree but uh you'll also see uh number 10 coming across the line in scrimmage zach varola came all the way through so you could have thrown the flag on either one it wouldn't have mattered it's five yards on the first down on fourth and one for the jackrabbits so now from the 21-yard line canyon bauer jaden yankees split right [Applause] heinz in motion snap ole dokin on first and ten fake to strong time comes back to strong at about the 15 and he will slide down around the 12-yard line and that's a gain of nine again presence in the pocket the protection has been outstanding this afternoon by that front line of sdsu and you saw oledokan just standing there calmly waiting looking looking and finally checks down to pierre strong and then they go quick again right back to strong inside the 10 first down first and goal coming for sdsu [Applause] in the red zone for the fourth time this afternoon they've scored twice inside the red zone the third time was the fumble that ole dokin lost on the second drive of the game [Music] bianchi twins out to the right of ole dokin [Applause] pierre strong gonna barrel it down to the five yard line [Music] mike was getting the ball out early on their passing and that's what we've seen here from baker now on these last few pass attempts not holding it not standing in the pocket here he's rolling out to fire deep and he's got a man wide open in the catch made and going all the way for six jaron rollins with the saluki touchdown had the single coverage man to man deep down that right side it's just a post pattern that he ran and on the rollout baker rolls away from the pressure and gets the biggest chunk play of the afternoon here for the salukis had the pressure coming from the back but look at that opening down the middle of the field and puts it perfectly on stride for rollins waldoni on the extra point is good 20-7 the salukis chop into the lead 61 yards on the rollins touchdown catch and scamper [Applause] again the way to beat some of that defensive pressure and that's what we've seen from the jackrabbit line is just that little bit of a roll out fake the handoff to keep them a little bit honest and then rolls out to the right and he put that one right on the money for rollins to take it to the house [Music] nick hill the saluki head coach outstanding quarterback in his playing days at southern illinois and nick baker hooks it up with jaron rollins second touchdown grab of the year for rollins [Music] so kind of a big turn around south coast state had it first and goal and the salukis help sdsu to a field goal and then they come right back down and as you said after hard truck made a great decision and a great play on the kickoff they get the quick score midway through the second quarter [Music] maybe a little bit of a momentum shift here in the second quarter for the salukis after they had struggled early on they come up with a defensive stop at the goal line to force the field goal as you talked about and then a big play which nick hill really likes to see out of his offense one of his explosive plays and the salukis defense will come back out onto the field now where the jackrabbits will start at their own 23 yard line on this possession tackled by zac farola on the return by amara johnson coming up friday back to high school football in north to create a little misdirection going the other way there and strong is taken down by calhoun after a gain of just two you know we thought we'd see that wild cat formation first out of southern illinois this afternoon tom but instead the jackrabbits pull it out of their magic back and tricks strong turns that into a two-yard gain off the left side jack's tried that reverse to yankee in the first quarter just got a couple of yards they had the strong touchdown throw to yankee on a bit of a trick play and then [Applause] the wildcat there to strong didn't get much second and eight for odokin big pressure coming and it's picked off at midfield first interception thrown by ole doke and jakari patterson with a big play and he returns it back to the 30-yard line ole dolken felt a little bit of the pressure a delayed blitz came up the middle by the salukis and you'll see it right here there's the delayed blitz coming around and he maybe felt that pressure and thought his receiver was going to check up in the middle of the field dumped it out there and as you said his first interception of the season puts the salukis in great field position here we talked about the momentum shift and now they're here they are already at the 30-yard line of the jackrabbits it has definitely swung southern illinois coming off a touchdown they get the turnover and sdsu commits its first two giveaways of the season a fumble in the first quarter by ola dolken and now the interception from the 30-yard line nick excuse me they go direct snap this time and that is javon williams this issue knocks him down after a gain of a yard [Music] [Applause] that's the formation we expected to see somewhat frequently because as coach john stiglemeyer said earlier in the week they run the wildcat formation more than any other team in the valley it's the first time we've seen it here this afternoon i've not seen logan backus out there defensively for the jacks gonna have to check on that with their outstanding senior linebacker dump it down to javon williams and he's down to the 21-yard line about a yard short of the first down good pursuit by the jackrabbits after that pass to the middle of the field as he was tracked down and tackled from behind prior before he could get to the sticks third and short back to javon williams spin inside the 20 first down salukis and they finally blow the whistle he got to the 17. javon williams working his way up the saluki all-time rushing touchdown chart he's fourth all time with 31 and both of these teams are top two in the missouri valley thus far in sacks per game both averaging better than three sacks per game neither one has picked up one yet as baker takes it down steps up got a little bit of room thrown across the middle and a touchdown salukis to landon lenore who had been quiet until the last couple of minutes and baker to lenoir to tighten it up at 2013. you know you talked about it earlier tom that uh that goal line stopped down at the other end of the field when the jackrabbits were forced to kick a field goal the salukis come down and score a touchdown right after that ensuing possession they come up with the interception and they uh they really have shown some spark here since that goal line stand to force the field goal and they're right back in this game [Applause] so after the jacks have taken a 20 to nothing lead southern illinois here in just under two and a half minutes on the game clock a touchdown an interception and another score as baker steps up lenore in the back of the end zone his sixth touchdown catch of the season and it's 20 to 14. the salukis offensive line tom really formed a nice pocket for baker that time there was no pressure coming up the middle which is what allowed him it looked like he was going to keep it at first as he started on that scramble up the middle but before he got to the line of scrimmage saw lenore in single coverage coming back across the end zone and against malik lofton put that pass on the money to get the salukis within six [Applause] southern illinois offenses come alive nick baker now nine of 11 118 yards two touchdowns and southern illinois is racked up 110 yards just in its last two possessions on the two scoring drives [Applause] 20 yard line jax kevin brenner a defensive end on the catch and carry for south dakota state out over the 40-yard line pretty good return for the big man right there coming down the left sidelines mel pierre strong jr seventh all time to over 3 000 career yards back to back thousand plus in 18 and 19. he's on the payton award watch list again this year nfl scouts have been to brookings to keep an eye on pierre strong jr and they need to get him going again he was good early 12 carries 69 yards for strong quick throw this time on first down heinz still going inside the 40 crashing down to the 32-yard line excuse me tucker craft on another grab and that is four catches already for kraft [Applause] and he picked up about 20 yards after the catch and look at how quickly olodokin gets rid of this ball that's just a quick out by the tight end or a hitch route across the middle of the field and then the big guy rumbles down the field got rid of the first tackler with the stiff arm but get confidence back for ole doke and after his last throw was intercepted they come right back to him give him an easy throw to make a good throw to make and a big gain strong could not get to the outside wrapped up by anthony knighton and that went backwards for a couple of yards [Music] so a couple of quick strikes by the salukis to chop a 20 to nothing south dakota state lead down to a single score another quick hitter of the dulcin [Applause] squeezes that into canyon bauer first catch of the game for the former sioux falls o'gorman knight good low throw bauer going down to get it keeps it away from the defenders and again the jackrabbits finding success in that soft middle of the secondary oledokan has been putting it on the money with the exception of the one that was intercepted on the previous drive third down and seven though after the jacks lost a couple on that first down play [Applause] strong motions out gonna flip it back in the middle and it's caught and goes ahead but gonna be short of a first down and [Music] that is tucker craft again but the shovel pass ran right into the blitz that was coming up the middle of the field and kraft gets bottlenecked by a couple of his offensive linemen but again the blitz was coming right off the middle of the field by the salukis they had that sniffed out and make a big stop on third down yeah quay brown was there almost before craft was so a 45 yarder this time for cole frown [Applause] [Music] and this is wide and well left [Applause] last issue after the big catch and run by kraft can't take advantage turned away again 20 to 14 and still two and a half minutes here and a half for southern illinois to go back at it jack rabbits come out after that turnover in the touchdown had some momentum as you talked about with another chunk play down the field that was actually that first play when they picked up the 27 yarder was their fifth play of 20 yards or more in this contest the salukis have had one and that was the 61-yard touchdown pass a couple of minutes ago but the jackrabbits have had a lot of chunk plays but this time they don't come away with points to show for it baker gives to williams [Applause] carries some tacklers ahead to the 34-yard line gain of about six [Applause] player this is his 39th straight start big man and left guard out there for southern illinois two minutes to go in the half sdsu just trying to get out of here with the lead salukis trying to make a run here good play by baker just to take that down he avoided stall bird and then went down right at the line of scrimmage third and about four coming up fortunate they didn't turn the ball over on that play the high snap kind of got bobbled as you said stallberg coming off that left side got up in the air and baker was able to keep the ball down and at least get back to the line of scrimmage to keep it third and manageable for the salukis false start offense number three five yard penalty third down that'll turn it into third and nine third penalty on the afternoon called against southern illinois the one that was thrown on the jackrabbits was declined by the salukis on the running into the puncher call baker flushed just did get it out of there to javion williams he took a hit and it looked like he got right to the first down or enough at least for the first down and it is for williams great effort first by baker to escape the rush and then he just kind of threw a dart literally if you were at the bars tonight you'll be throwing darts that way but he got it to williams and williams did the rest to pick up the first still a couple of timeouts for siu a minute to go tunnel it out there again to williams and he stays in bounds at the 43-yard line has become the workhorse here in the last two possessions for southern illinois after that reception he's touched the ball on six of the last seven plays [Applause] second to five clock still ticking 25 seconds to go in the half graham was spalding in coverage as they tried to get it again to williams and the clock stopped at 23 seconds third and six coming up you can hear the crowd coming to life a little bit here on third down exhorting their jackrabbit defense to get a stop and as you said only 23 ticks left on the clock if they do get the ball back after a punt they've still got a long ways to go even with three timeouts baker again to williams tolu ogernde back in there after he came off nursing that right leg he stopped retreated and made the tackle on williams short of a first down yeah you called it oh gurnday read that he saw it stopped his uh his pursuit from the side and turned around and went right after javon williams and that's what's prevented williams from making it to the first down sticks south dakota state actually takes the time out it's fourth and two coming up [Applause] the footballs jaron rollins this goes 61 yards to get southern illinois on the board 20-7 and then just a couple of plays later jakari patterson picks off ole dokin at the 30-yard line and that leads to a baker to football conference game exactly what we expected to see here today we will check some valley scores when we come back [Music] good players the twins from madison south dakota in their junior seasons now jayden on the left jackson on the right there and peggy parton jaden does have a touchdown catch it just wasn't from chris oludokan it was thrown by pierre strong what's pierre strong's quarterback rating well according to the stats we're looking at here his quarterback rating is just 589.6 strong with that touchdown throw put sdsu up 17 nothing jackson 20 to nothing and then southern illinois took advantage of a couple of sdsu miscues nick baker couple of touchdown passes time to tell you how that momentum changed southern illinois on their first four drives possessions in the first half ran 14 plays gained a total of 20 yards had three punts and lost a fumble their next three possessions also ran 14 plays 129 yards and two touchdowns [Applause] salukis will get it first to start the third quarter [Applause] jack rabbits again well run the linebackers back out there with adam bach graham spalding isaiah stallberg logan backus stays on the sideline for the moment [Applause] everybody's got injuries southern illinois playing without avonte cox their great wide receiver here this afternoon injured a shoulder last week at western illinois southern illinois also lost one of their starting corners to a season-ending injury early in the season as well and then in their their season opener in fact james caesar went out with a shoulder injury that knocked him out for the rest of the year first game of the season so everybody's dealing with the injury bug throughout the course of the season you just have to take that again next man up mentality first care of the game for donovan spencer for southern illinois got about three yards he goes off williams comes back in baker on short second and short out to javon williams graham spalding wraps him up right away and a gain of just a couple third and five coming up for the saliki's as you look at the replay again the other thing that has worked to the salukis benefit tom has gone to this more of a rush hurry up offense where they're not huddling they're getting back to the line of scrimmage they're making a quick play call they're trying to up the tempo of the game and that has worked to their favor since about midway through the second quarter daniel motions across a little bit of time for baker coming across the middle jacob it's all over it the pass was caught right at the line of scrimmage and then adam bach xavier ward josh mancha gaia all in there on the stop and sdsu with a stop to start the second half baker stands in the pocket it was starting to collapse you saw the little two-handed push at the end but look at the jackrabbit defense swarm to that ball in the middle of the field that's the kind of jackrabbit defense that needs to happen if they're going to have a shot to continue to lead this ball game and pull out a win at the end jack cahoon as southern illinois is going to take a penalty here picking team number 21 five-year penalty fourth down [Applause] [Music] you know tom these rugby style kickers are the ones that get those good rolls and we've seen some great examples of that out of cahoon here today they don't get a lot of hang time but he directs it different places and then ends up getting a good roll out of it it's kind of like your golf drive certainly not mine right on during newman down in coverage cahoon averaged 50 yards a punt on four in the first half including that 65-yarder that they downed at the one-yard line high school football in south dakota coming up on midco sports and midco sports plus friday night with pier at aberdeen central and what should be a very good 11 double a match-up [Music] first down holodoken he's got jackson yankee across the 45-yard line nice pickup on the play again the rollout the jackrabbit offense maybe they're trying to pick up the tempo a little bit here as well getting olodokin on the rollout hits yankee in stride right down the hash marks between the defenders big gain and another first down for sdsu taken down by quay brown tucker craft shifts to the right side [Applause] throw again holy doke in a little low for his tight end zach hines and that's incomplete threw that one into a little bit of coverage had to keep it down so you don't have that deflection prevent the interception olodokin a smart quarterback he's a sixth year player [Applause] transferred in showed up in may and jumped right in to become part of this jackrabbit program right from the get-go he was impressive right away as the jacks beat colorado state on the road in their opener this year but this turned into a ball game in that second quarter with the siu come back [Applause] holy dokin hooking it up again with zach heinz [Music] on the afternoon now for 241 yards but getting rid of the ball quickly has worked in his favor for these last few possessions if you take a look at ole dokin right there he's trying to fire up his team as they still take a look at the injured player for the jackrabbits all right right back [Music] and short coming up for south dakota state from their southern illinois 45-yard line zach heinz did get up walked off might have been a little bit of a neck stinger for heinz we're not sure but pierre strong's gonna get the first down here as jim hans and that offensive line taken down to the 40 and again here's the catch by zach heinz and then he went to the ground and the lower body seemed fine you can see him right there that left hand reaching up that's to grab his mouthpiece but there was something in that left shoulder left neck her left upper body area that seemed to be bothering him but that conversion by the jackrabbits tom just their second on third down that they've been able to move the sticks heinz right back in there as well craft comes in motion first down at the 40. fake to strong oladokin's got a man wide open and that is tucker craft again [Music] nobody close on the sixth catch of the day for tucker crash the salukis that sold out on a blitz and they were trying to get to ole dokin but he saw it coming there's the hit on the quarterback and as you said the coverage nobody there if he's able to pull that and keep his feet along the sidelines could have turned that to the north and gone a long ways [Music] goes for 16 yards [Applause] [Music] fake again to strong going down the scene there were a couple of receivers right there together jackson yankee and tucker craft and kraft could not hang on not sure he got turned around quite in time to see that ball coming as you said there was a little congestion with both him and yankee in the same general area ole dokin was trying to lead him down the field and he turned and had it on the numbers that's a tough catch to make though when you're heading and you're turning all the way back around basically to your right shoulder after you're running down to the left side quay brown was running there in coverage with him but heinz cracking down on the block here strong wrapped up by bryce no tree and this is no gain on the play no tree one of the stalwarts of that saluki defense again he will move around from his linebacker position sometimes he'll line up as they as a rush end in a passing situation but the salukis doing a nice job on defensive mixing things up they're showing blitz coming after olodokin at times and then they just play the run straight up and keon pierre strong strong motions back in so after the miss on first down it's third and ten salukis play it straight up up front ole dokin did not want to put it down and run and he is picked off at the 10-yard line clayton bush with the takeaway for the salukis second interception of the game for southern again momentum changing and ole dokin as you see him trotting off the field probably wishing he hadn't thrown that ball he's rolling out away from the pressure and anytime you're doing that you don't want to throw back across your body back into the middle of the field and you can see right there two white jerseys in the middle of the field that's a tough throw to make and most coaches will advise you against it it's a no no no yes play if it works but most of the time it's a no-no no play [Applause] so again the jackrabbits drive deep into saluki territory and come away with no points ole don't get two interceptions as well as a lost fumble so far this afternoon back to spencer cole stewart big fullback out there throwing people around in front of donovan spencer they say along with baker running the ball the salukis have used four different running backs to carry the ball here this afternoon it's kind of running back by rotation in a way it's what uh brian bergstrom and the jackrabbit defense expected they would see all of these backs bring different things to the table and the salukis are keeping the jackrabbit defense off balance baker waited just long enough to get rid of that before kade tervir got him from behind neither team has had a sack here yet this afternoon jack rabbit defense has been mostly able to contain baker in the pocket right there you saw him feeling that pressure and dump that ball out to avoid the sack back at his two yard line third and eight isaiah stallberg comes up to take a look and there is a flag down as it looked like oh gurnday jumped across not gonna matter anyway because lenore made that catch over on the saluki sideline all the way out to the 35. you know lenore as we're seeing here in this last couple of times that he's had the ball thrown his way defense number 22. penalty has declined result of the play first down you know nick hill describes lenore as one of the best he's as good as anyone in the country made some really tough catches here in that may quarter final game of the fcf playoffs and he's just playing at a high level right now he says he's a heck of a leader to have on our team and he's playing with a lot of confidence it took the salukis about a quarter and a half before they even targeted him here this afternoon but since they've been going his way he's producing another big throw by baker stepping up and going long he's got a man there but the jacks closed defensively and i don't know if that is intercepted or not incomplete as the field judge runs in and makes the call i think malik lofton just did get back in time to knock it away from lenore well back at the other end of the field tom the other question was was baker across the line of scrimmage there's no flag out but if you look at it depending on the angle he was very close to being across the line of scrimmage at the 35-yard line when he let go of that ball the right foot maybe was right on it [Applause] as you see the battle between lenoir and malik lofton there at the end hard to tell from the backside angle it was ruled incomplete i don't think there will be a challenge second and ten [Applause] they direct snap to williams he wanted to throw it and now he's going to take off he's got a little bit of room juke at the 40 and take it now at the 42 yard line he got about eight yards out of it and javon williams was gonna throw he definitely was looking left and how he escaped the pressure because the pocket collapsed around him after the direct snap then he's busted up the middle and picks up eight look at him left he's loading up and gonna throw and right there breaks out of a tackle breaks out of an arm tackle and then turns it into an eight-yard gain this is a guy that the jackrabbit defense were concerned about they said he makes a lot of their stuff go we just have to be ready for whatever he's going to do yeah he's thrown two passes this season either one's been complete but they go back to williams and they have really started to try and get javon williams going going back to midway through that second quarter out he's a workhorse and a threat to do anything like you talked about he's shown us here how well he can run the ball he's a big strong kid [Applause] [Music] and we know he will throw the ball as well [Applause] stays out there baker stays off williams looking to throw again and he does [Applause] swinging out big hit by daishon gales but the catch by heart trump is good for about four yards now williams and har trump both took shots at the end of that play williams when he was throwing the pass got buried by the jack kravitz but look at the offensive line stacking it up and then he goes down and watch the hit here at the end by daishon gales leads with the shoulder and puts a pretty good lick on hard trip as well salukis after the interception by bush started this at their own nine yard line [Applause] what a grab again over on the sideline that is inbounds and a catch again for landon lenore and he is going against the young corner dallas being him out there for south dakota state well thomas similar to what sdsu is doing in the first half they get one-on-one coverage down the sideline you're gonna put that up for your best receiver to go get any time and that's just a great throw and a great catch at the end by lenore and another chunk gain for southern illinois salukis trying to go 90-plus yards here and punch this in and maybe get to the lead first down at the 14 yard line spencer left side knocked out about the 10. thomas stacker's hat comes off and again this drive started with that interception back at their own nine yard line that was their ninth play of this drive and they've picked up about 85 yards on this drive since they started deep in their own territory [Applause] mark the ball back at the 11 yard line [Applause] lenore coming on now he had that touchdown catch late in the second quarter to cut the sdsu lead to 2014. their first charge [Applause] this is a high-powered saluki offense allen averaged 38 points a game overall they've already played two valley games and they're averaging 33 in those two the win against illinois state and western illinois well there was no question the jackrabbits knew this was going to be to this point of the season the best offense that they have faced so far and they you know after a slow start have really turned it on we talked about nick baker 16 of 21 194 yards here including a couple of touchdowns to get his salukis back into this ball game but chris olodokin's done really the same thing for the jackrabbits minus the turnover 16 of 23 for oledokan 265 yards but he's been picked off twice and as you mentioned also lost a fumble deep in southern illinois territory back in the first quarter baker has kept himself clean so far no sacks yet for the jacks second and seven lenore goes left baker again just did get it off there's a flag down over here on the near sideline [Applause] as caleb sanders was in hot pursuit of nick baker hot pursuit that was almost like a jail break coming through there at first i thought they were looking for some sort of a screen pass as quickly as he was in the backfield [Applause] john stiglemeyer is out saying they're going to decline this penalty there is no foul for intentional grounding for the quarterback's pass went beyond the line of scrimmage however illegal formation offense number 82 was in the backfield making that five players penalty has declined the result of the play brings up third down [Applause] so five men in the backfield here's the rollout and it's almost like he's looking back to his left to try to find a screen of some sort but then realizes he's got pressure coming there's nothing there and he just dumped it out to the right sideline as you heard the official explain got it past the line of scrimmage to avoid the intentional grounding call declined by the jackrabbits brings up a big third down play third and seven for baker looking back to lenore set up a little screen out there for him and he's got the first down michael griffin prevents the touchdown for the moment but lenore inside the five yard line and it's first and goal you know what tom when you need a big play you go to your big time players and that's ben lenoir here right now this was a well executed bubble screen out in the flat lenore with blockers in front of him reaches gets it down to about the yard and a half line is where they'll mark it but it was enough for the first down and now it's first and goal here for southern illinois [Applause] baker fake jack's all over him and he just did hang on to the football reese winkelmann got in there for south dakota state of guernsey and baker again acted like he wanted to throw it at the last second was fortunate this didn't come out yeah he's fortunate i think he did lose the handle up at the very end right there he was trying to get rid of it and going to the ground it may have come out of his hand briefly but he falls right on top of it but first sack of the afternoon for either team here and there's still any discussion going on amongst the officials for 12 members on the defense they had 11. second down so they pick up the marker and it's second and goal from the nine lenore and rollins both out to the left of baker coming back the other way though into the corner and that intended receiver there was some contact but it didn't look like it happened until the ball was wide well first of all the ball was not catchable so if there was contact they're not going to call pass interference because that ball was well outside of the end zone but the flag came out very late [Music] and very emphatically i might add after the play was over unsportsmanlike conduct defense number six penalties half the distance to the goal automatic first down daniel had crossed the sideline and that's what they're calling is a taunting penalty on michael griffin yeah it's the chatter after the play you're exactly right that's what the call was would have been third a goal from the nine instead first and goal from the four and a half for the salukis and again they started this drive back at their nine yard line after the interception fake to lenore williams trying to get it up the middle got a couple of yards down inside the two williams took that direct snap faked the jet sweep then he was looking to his left thinking he might jump past this right here there's nothing there so he's like tuck it down run up the middle get what i can second and short as the salukis threaten to tie and or take the lead in this one williams again snap ahead of steve straight ahead but who comes up off the bottom here rhys winkelmann just created a huge pile there that prevented williams from getting in and then the jacks finish it off and it's going to be third and goal from the four because winkelmann also with caleb sanders in there just put up a huge solid front and as you said the fence was there and williams had absolutely nowhere to go even with the full head of steve coming off that direct snap look at that side of the defensive line stacking up against the o-line and pushing him back and of course with his helmet coming off he has to step off the field for a play so nick baker will come back on [Applause] look in lenore's way spencer coming from the inside and that is michael griffin who screams up from the safety spot to knock it away and it's fourth and goal from the four and now what i'll tell you what vic baker's going to plead his case on interference there but griffin makes an awesome break on this ball comes across right in front he's playing the ball all the way made a great read on the quarterback's eyes comes across with that left arm to break up the play and back in may it was griffin who came up with the game-saving interception to seal the win here for the jackrabbits nico gualdoni will come on and try a 22-yard field goal to tighten things up just a little bit more there's a flag down at the five yard line kick was good [Applause] flag down right where the ball was snapped now depending on the penalty this this becomes an interesting question you take points off the board and go back and try it again a couple yards closer to the goal line or you you keep the points on the board and go kick off points could be at a premium here in the second half [Applause] [Applause] [Music] i'm still not sure what the indication was it is picked up i haven't seen one yet but is there a play clock on how long you can take to accept or decline a penalty yeah nobody's taking time out but they're still talking to the southern illinois coach illegal formation on the defense number 55 lined up in the gap with the snapper penalties half the distance to the goal fourth down so it's not an automatic first down and now it's fourth and goal from the two and they will take waldoni off the field thomas stacker the defensive tackle they said you can't you cannot line up right over the snapper's head and they take points off the board tom so the field goal yes was good but now it's fourth and goal shades of the playoff game here back in the spring season nick baker back on to take the snap javon williams wanted to throw it back to baker nobody there and williams is fumbles it at the goal line coming back the other way with the jackrabbits malik lofton is streaking down the sideline and he will score unbelievable there's a flag at the 50-yard line all over the place but more flags coming in on the sideline for the jackrabbits this is going to get ugly with the yellow hankies coming out but what an amazing turnaround we talked about it do you take points off the board you get cartwheeled at the goal line the ball comes out there's three flags out there lofton did take it all the way back well the second flag came in very late after the return so that's going to be assessed at the end of the play there was no ruling of him breaking the plane and scoring a touchdown so the fumble at this point is legit unless that goes to review yeah there was nothing initially down on that end of the the field you're right as well a lot to talk about out here right now tucked it under he wanted to go back to baker let's take a look at the replay here so williams goes in the air ball is definitely not at least there by von morrow and then lofton takes off jimmy rogers is trying to get everybody back on the sideline but there's some flags coming in about right now so the flags had to be on something on the sidelines because you can see that ball never crossed the goal line it was back behind him when it came out there may have been something at the block right at the tail end there that we saw where the first flag came out the rest of it is going to be celebration on the sidelines so the question is does this all come back or is it all going to be after the play concludes we're about to find out wow there are no points put up yet on the scoreboard here in the stadium first the ruling on the field was a fumble recovered by the defense return for a touchdown there are two fouls during the play sideline interference on the return team number 33 the penalties declined unsportsmanlike conduct on the return team number 22 coming onto the field without his helmet that 15-yard penalty will be enforced on the kickoff we'll try the extra point at the three [Applause] that is an unbelievable sequence of events what a turnaround first the decision to take the field goal off the board run the play somehow williams escapes being tackled back at the 10-yard line the jack rabbits had him in their sights there then as he's about to leap and score in the end zone gets totally cartwheeled how's the ball knocked out lofton scoops it and scores and everything that happened before that had the taunting penalty on michael griffin give southern illinois another set of downs inside the 10. so there will be a penalty on the kickoff but the jacks and there is nobody sitting in the stadium right now sdsu is looking like they're going to go for two here [Applause] well it makes sense at this point with the 12 point lead and with a little momentum that let's go rabbits can't you hear from the crowd wow this energy they feed from how many times can we say wow about that play we'll get another look i believe that was ryan by marlo who created the fumble holy dokin the easy pitch to heinz for the two-point conversion 28-14 south dakota state sports is presented by farmers union insurance simply different [Music] wow one more time thank you south dakota state leads southern illinois here late in the third quarter and we're trying to track that last drive by the salukis it started they had the interception they started at their own nine yard line went all the way down to the sdsu one where they had first and goal baker gets sacked on that first and goal play back at the nine yard line they then ran six more plays from inside the 10-yard line take points off the board with the penalty on the field goal and then on fourth down again lose a fumble and it goes 99 yards the other way for a jack rabbit touchdown and now they kick off from their 20 because of the sideline unsportsmanlike call on the sidelines two sideline penalties on that return and so from from the 20 will give heart trump a chance here he's already out to the 25 and track down there thomas mats go down to get him and we'll take a break take one more look at that crazy play when we come back [Music] what a turnaround here late in the third quarter [Music] 28-14 south dakota state on the 99-yard fumble return touchdown by malik lofton after southern illinois had driven it 90 yards all the way to the jackrabbit one yard line and donovan spencer on this first carry of the drive for the salukis i don't know that i have ever seen a crazier sequence of plays than what we saw on that previous possession started first and goal at the one had penalties that gave them a fresh set of downs made a field goal took the points off the board go for it again and it turns into six the other way absolutely crazy baker over the middle this spencer spalding and bach take him down but first down on the catch and run by spencer up to the 39-yard line this salukis offense you know this is the way to regroup and get yourself back in this game after seeing the momentum shift that way is let's pick up a first down let's get our composure back here baker with time jack rabbits blow the coverage catch made by jaron rollins and already siu is inside the jackrabbit 25-yard line yeah you had daishon gales and isaiah stahlbert i think both back there and they both kind of looked at each other and looked away and let that receiver get behind both of them and baker puts it on the money to the wide open receiver and he's down that's is that rollins yeah there's rollins i think graham spaulding is out of the 40-yard line for the jackrabbits with the cramp but here's that last pass baker stays calm in the pocket and right there you see rollins got behind the two defenders the safety comes over to knock him out of bounds but miscommunication between the other two defenders as you see rollins heading off the field under his own power yeah he goes one way spalding comes off as well the other both appear like they will be able to carry on [Applause] big strike again though by nick baker and they've got it at the sdsu 25-yard line baker now 250 yards through the air [Applause] fake to spencer sling it out to lenore knocked out by lofton he's right at the first down marker knocked out before that game of about eight for landon lenore the saluki passing game is is rolling away from pressure baker knows he's going to get chased and so they're throwing those safe routes out into the flat right now what an amazing throw again by baker and that is caught back shoulder lenore is having his way on that side of the field [Applause] and we have seen defensive backs on both sides of the football come up asking for flags for push-offs this is the previous play where lenore got knocked out of bounds but that was a great catch and a throw to the back shoulder to set up first and goal for the salukis fake again to spencer trying to go to lenoir daishon gales pushed him just far enough into the corner had to throw it long here's the play that we were talking about right here malik lofton he claims he got pushed off but it's a good back shoulder throw to the outside and when you've got one-on-one coverage going against lenore i throw that ball to him just about every time he goes 6-1-192 but he's got the leaps to get up and elevate over some of the smaller d-backs and he's got great hands to go along with it didn't have a catch till about midway through the second quarter he's got seven of them now spencer on the ground saluki big guys trying to shove him in and he's not going to get there he will be stopped at the one yard line it's gonna be third and goal the jackrabbit defense are saying we've been here before lenore was lined up in the slot to the right that time in the jackrabbit defense solid up the middle that run defense has been pretty good all day have only given up 41 yards on the ground to southern illinois it's the passing yardage of 277 where southern illinois has gotten back into this game van marle has come in there made some nice plays at that defensive tackle spot along with xavier ward third and goal ball right at the one yard line you know tom since williams went out after he got his helmet knocked off we've not seen him come back on offense for the salukis fingers pointed up front [Applause] offense number 59 five yard penalty third down big z fur crown left he's playing center right now just wants to twitch the touch to get the jacks to come across and maybe not the worst thing in the world they go back to the six yard line and it's third and goal from there it gives you a little more flexibility in your play call gives you a little more room but i'll tell you what this jackrabbit defense has stepped up every time they've been called on to do so in these kinds of situations we've got an offensive lineman substitute number 73's helmet came up on the previous play prior to the fall start he must depart to play for one legal play third down jimmy wormsley the center comes out jake green a freshman comes in to replace him fur crown moves over to center lenore motions across third and goal for nick baker got some room to run gonna get smacked at about the two yard line and it'll be fourth down from there well he was looking for lenore he had lenore match one on one up at the top of the field up at the top of the screen looking for him he's at the top of your screen is slant across the middle and then curled back to the outside before baker got flushed and tried to get there on the ground but met by a host of blue and yellow jerseys michael griffin daishon gales on the stop fourth and goal again for the salukis feel like we've been here before call it the three yard line and again yes no javon williams spencer in there at the running back faker looking to throw knocked down by the jack rabbits and another fourth down a stop inside the five-yard line for south dakota state reese winkelmann got the big mitts up and one of the things the coaches talked to their defensive line about this week is baker's not that tall he has a tough time seeing over our big guys and if you can time it get your hands up on him he's trying to throw that out in the flat reese winkelmann with his jersey being held at everything gets his mitts up there and gives the jack rabbit offense the ball at their own three yard line [Applause] southern illinois again drives it 70 plus yards and the salukis get turned away total yards are even enough now 369 for the jackrabbits 321 for the salukis and south carolina back up a little bit more prior to the ball being snapped false start offense number 74 penalty is half the distance to the goal still first down he's going to say the only benefit of that instead of five yards it's a yard and a half [Applause] just the third penalty of the day on the jacks green field gets whistled there [Applause] ole dokken has made some mistakes this afternoon made some plays as well but cannot make one down here right now pierre strong taken down short game and bryce no tree on the stop for southern illinois and that's going to be the last play of the third quarter a crazy third quarter [Applause] the only scoring in the quarter was the 99-yard touchdown return by malik lofton 28-14 going to the fourth [Music] welcome back to brookings crowd sticking around for the fourth quarter of this one as south dakota state will have it at their own four yard line [Music] to start this drive to start the fourth quarter two huge stops for the sdsu defense in the third quarter [Music] and pierre strong on second down from the four only a time the release valve is pierre strong and we'll get him out across the 10 where it'll be third in short coverage was solid in the secondary by the salukis again their corner sometimes give up that cushion to start with that means it's tougher to beat them deep the protection on that play for ole dokin was outstanding but the coverage in the secondary was just as good so he has to check down at the last minute can we bring up third and short last issue only 74 rushing yards 87 total 74 for pierre strong but under 100 on the ground so far for the jackrabbits do it through the air on third down here and that pass was tipped at the line of scrimmage intended for jackson yankee and it went off the helmet off the helmet of uh number 98 or maybe it was 96 cameron boudry as the salukis brought a blitz and olodokin was trying to get it to yankee quickly across the middle just to the right here right there yep that's boundary as it goes off of his helmet so after the stop though sdsu goes three and out hunter dustman to put it away and it ends up way on the far side of the field inside the 40-yard line [Applause] [Music] 14 minutes to go 28-14 south dakota state 14 minutes to play in brookings south dakota state leading southern illinois nick baker creating some time again slides down across the 45-yard line and he picked up five on first down well baker's gonna look for something deep to make something happen they have had some success against this jackrabbit secondary either on man-to-man coverage with lenoir or with defensive breakdowns but when he gets pressured out of that pocket he is slippery and he's picked up yards on scrambling as well [Applause] pitch to williams and he used that block well kind of backed up went forward again he got five and a half yards in a first down he is a shifty runner this is a lateral back to him and look at him read the blocks right there spalding gets away from his man maybe got pushed from the back a little bit but he gets past bach and moves the pile to move the chains [Music] [Applause] nine carries 29 yards for javon williams first down north to 50 baker on a slant and a good in the catch made by har trump isaiah hartra good looking freshman came into the game with over 20 catches in the first five baker got this out of his hands quickly jack rabbits bringing a little bit of a blitz from the right side stahlberg was coming in trying to get up and get his hands in the air baker fired it around him for the completion southern illinois has moved the ball all over the field in the second half [Applause] but have not come away with any points another catch by lenore southern illinois i don't think you're going to see much of nick baker standing back in a pocket looking for somebody deep right now he's getting that ball out of his hand quickly or he's rolling out to throw the ball on the run he knows that there's pressure coming from this defensive line and blitzes from the jack rabbits jacks rush four baker plenty of times slinging it across the middle and no flags heart trip the intended man stalberg defensively for south dakota state and sdsu with a four-man rush quentin hicks gets to him right at the very end of the play kind of got blocked into him there but he was coming from the back side and baker felt it third and four baker i'm not sure he's ready for that snap got it anyway high in the air and off the fingertips a flag is down here zach gibson had a finger tip on it but i think that thing was kind of messed up at the start and the flag came out back at the line of scrimmage from the near sideline they're discussing it right now so i don't know if this was the defense being in the neutral zone we're going to find out offside defense lining up in the neutral zone number 48 that five-yard penalty results in a first down yeah baker was not really looking for the snap there but up at the top of the screen hicks [Applause] was across the line and sdsu has had some bad penalties in this second half untimely penalties that's what's cost him and this one keeps the drive alive but what would have been fourth down now becomes a fresh set from the 25 for baker 292 yards through the air so far for baker and to williams and then he was going to throw it out in the flat to donovan spencer that's some of the creativity we expected to see out of this saluki offense and they need a spark right now and that handoff it was not a pitch it was a handoff to williams and he tried in congestion to pull up and throw that ball so watch him right here takes the hand off a lot of congestion around he gets hit as he throws and he's probably lucky he got hit because that could have very easily gone the other way and stahlberg made a break on that jax again can't quite get there baker stepping out in trouble receiver was well out of bounds before that pass was even thrown stalberg running in coverage over there with har trump just grabbed a defense playing straight up they haven't sent the blitz on these last couple of pass plays they're going straight up past rush with their four down linemen so baker has had time to throw he just has not had open receivers third and 10. jacks drop a defensive end in coverage baker staying on his feet he needs a couple more yards fumble and southern illinois gets on it it's gonna be fourth down but zach gibson jumps on it for the salukis that time the ball bounced the way of southern illinois they've had a couple of tough breaks this one works in their favor on the scramble by baker took a pretty good shot over there there were a couple of jack rabbits that had a chance to get on it just weren't able to get their hands to it here's the end of the play watch the hit right here's stahlbert and bach put the hit on him to knock it out great hustle to be able to pull that one back in by zach gibson great hands the signaled touchdown already kale reader is wrestling for it for the jacks i'm not sure who the receiver is for southern illinois but yes the side judge did indicate touchdown i would put a bet it's lenore now lenore was standing there that's the man who just made the final recovery zach gibson and it is a southern illinois touchdown well a big hit at the end put on there by xavier ward you can't defend that really much better in the secondary what a catch by graham spaulding the linebacker going back there with him and then the hand fight takes place right there for possession [Applause] [Music] but they have well they still haven't put the points up on the board here at dana j daikou stadium but the salukis are lining up for an extra point this is an incredible catch and that was spalding in coverage the linebacker back there and i mean the important thing for the salukis is it was ruled out caleb sanders was down there for a moment for the jacks and he's walking on [Applause] well we've seen a couple of leg cramps from guys today it is very humid out here there's a chance of thunderstorms in the area later on tonight the humidity has been here all day long they have now put the points on the board so it's 28-20 as the salukis line up to try to get within seven third touchdown throw for nick baker and their first fourth down conversion of the afternoon couldn't have going out with a parent ankle injury sometime in the first quarter we did not see him i don't think at all in the second quarter he is on the field he's got his helmet on but no gloves with him he has not been on the field at all since sometime midway through the first half yeah he and don gardner the injured corner standing down there by each other but back has been walking around the entire second half like nothing's wrong but has not been in the football game meanwhile these salukis tighten it up again 28-21 nick baker's got three touchdown passes now the total yards are almost even now 377 for sdsu 376 for the salukis baker's got 311 passing yards and we still have 10 and a half minutes to play in this tom this is this is a lot of game left to play for both these teams [Music] tyler falcam gonna get a chance at a return from his own one-yard line up the seam and up ended up well special teams could be what this game comes down to and that was a great special teams tackle now philip powell screaming down there to make the hit for southern illinois and sdsu again will start deep in their own end 15-yard line [Applause] but again for these offenses moving the ball has not been the issue it's been hanging on to it it's been converting when you get down into scoring range or scoring territory now moving it on that last drive was for the jacks as they went three and out deep in their own end got to get something going trying to do it on the ground pierre strong bounces off a couple and he is gone all the way for pierre strong well you know what anytime he touches the ball he's in scoring territory apparently how he escaped the bottleneck at the line of scrimmage because he was hit almost immediately after he took the hand off bounces off to the left cuts back to the right and there is nobody but look at this right here he's stacked up breaks arm tackle breaks an arm tackle now there's nobody 85 yards for the score second touchdown of the game for pierre rushing attempts by nick baker he's the one with the freshest legs we never saw him at all in the first half and now spencer just his second check that his seventh carry of the afternoon takes that one to the house and showing some speed 63-yard touchdown run by spencer michael griffin is down for the jacks big lead block there's big z out there in front but again very similar to the run we saw just moments ago from pierre strong once you got past that line of scrimmage and got to the second level there was nobody there now the offensive numbers starting to get silly sdsu's got 460 yards southern illinois 450. griffin another player up and under his own power coming off caleb sanders was injured a moment ago as well he got back up and got back in there but now gualdoni will try to again make it a touchdown game a seven point game this is three scores in the last minute on the clock at the baker to gibson touchdown for southern illinois the pierre strong 85 yard touchdown run 63 one minute on the clock it seems like we've been 15 minutes in real time but it has been the result of some big plays some explosive plays and as you said three touchdowns in a matter of 60 seconds on the scoreboard clock [Applause] hello southern illinois has come from 20 down in this game by the way south dakota state got out to a 20 to nothing lead midway through the second quarter and then the salukis struck twice in a couple of minutes midway through the second quarter 20 to 14 at halftime the only scoring in that third quarter was the 99 yard touchdown return on a fumble by malik lofton for the jackrabbits 28-14 sdsu at the end of three and then three quick scores here in a minute in the fourth to make it 35-28 [Music] feldcam no steam but he gets knocked down again at the 20. football comes out at the end but he was down far side down by contact is the ruling at the 20-yard line [Music] south coast state 4-0 coming into this win coming up for the jackrabbits at western illinois next week and in the 23rd is hobo day here at home against northern iowa [Music] north dakota state beat northern iowa by the way today 34-20 western illinois lost to indiana state so the production out of the tight ends between tuckercraft zach heinz last week it was mike morgan i don't know that morgan has a catch yet today but he has been in the game but that has really kind of become the bread and butter for this sdsu passing offense with the occasional big play sprinkled in to the the yankee twins jaden and jackson just one touchdown through the air and that was thrown by little fake to him tucker craft dragged down by quay brown but that is another 10 plus chunk of yards for the jackrabbits you know what i like about these tight ends tom they don't weave their way down the field like pierre strong jr does like give me the ball and i'm gonna run into somebody and keep going until you knock me down although mike morgan last week he showed some pretty good moves on his touchdown catch but craft in the hinds is like get in my way because i'm coming i think we're obliged to mention dallas goddard at this point probably who kind of started that tight end also want to be aggressive with your play calling i think i don't know that you want to settle for a field goal right now you need to get this ball in the end zone if at all possible because we have seen how both of these teams can have a quick strike offense you got to put as many points on the board as you can right now [Applause] third and four jacks they're gonna take a timeout i think taking some time here as the play clock is at five 30 seconds in duration [Music] back and forth here in the second half again it was 20 to nothing jack rabbits 20 to 14 south could have stayed at halftime has been able to hang on to the lead salukis have cut it to 28-21 let it now here to 35-28 but four and a half minutes to go coming up a week from today next saturday in aberdeen in the northern sun minot state at northern state six o'clock kickoff on midco sports 2 and on the app midco sports plus so we got high school football on friday night with pier at aberdeen central and then in the nsic on saturday with minot state at northern south dakota state trying to hang on and get out of here at five and all big play coming up third and four got to get to 15 for a first down well the play clock operator please start the play clock on my whistle so the jacks will huddle back up [Applause] and the play clock starts you're strong behind ole dokin third and four going nowhere this is gonna bring up fourth down as they just smother pierre strong that was giannini belizari in there with about five other tacklers for the solution yeah belisari absolutely blew this play up right there meeting strong in the backfield he didn't make the tackle but he made the play so it's fourth and five loss of one on that carry jakari patterson who's got an interception here this afternoon cole from lining up for another field goal attempt this would be 37 yards he has made two but missed badly at the other end we gotta hurry they just do get it off keaton heidi on the hole and it is blocked by the salukis [Applause] returned out to the 29-yard line flag down on the far side of the field way at the end of this play [Music] games had just about everything we have seen just about everything that's the only thing one of the things we hadn't seen yet was a blocked kick and it keeps it a one-score game as southern illinois takes over the field goal was blocked during the play sideline enter excuse me sideline warning southern illinois that's their first there is no yardage they take over on downs first down i did not see you block it and there's tucker craft is the jackrabbit down now so these salukis 3 36 to go nick baker will take back over baker already over 300 yards through the air and three touchdowns [Applause] [Music] [Applause] well the salukis played an overtime game last week at western illinois they won it in ot when they scored first and then after western illinois scored they went for a two-point conversion the saluki defense stuffed it for the win not saying we're headed there yet but that's entirely possible baker jackrabbit is trying to squeeze him and he tried to get it either [Applause] good pressure up front by that defensive line again forcing baker to step up into the pocket through that ball great coverage right there on the short pass second down and 10. baker has been elusive though jack sacked him one time that was on that crazy fourth down stop back in the third quarter stepping up again trying to get to the outside and he will just run out at about the 33-yard line stop the clock and it'll be third and six coming up he has been on the run a lot today he has felt the pressure he has escaped a lot of pressure he has made some great throws on the run and he's also stood in the pocket at times and taken some pretty good shots here's a big third down and six jacks again drop a defender just a three-man rush baker trying to squeeze it in there stahlberg got a piece of it but it was gonna be well short and again a late flag this one comes in from the near sideline towards the end of the play [Applause] preliminary is an ineligible receiver downfield ineligible receiver downfield on the offense number 17 was covered up on the line of scrimmage the penalty has been declined result of the play brings up fourth down that's fourth and sixth but baker stays out there well with 302 on the clock here this is almost do or die time for southern illinois right now when you're on the road you play to win and this is what they have to do they need to come up with this first down to have a chance to win this football game if they were to punt it away here yeah it'd be a long field for the jackrabbits but not much time left jack's coming after him on third down can't get home baker is going to get the first down as he slides out at the 43-yard line and sdsu had it nailed and just whiffed absolutely but that's the shiftiness of baker he saw this blitz coming right up the middle you'll see that linebacker coming in from the left side untouched runs right by him right back quick donovan spencer's got a catch across the 45-yard line each team has two timeouts left right now that's more important for the salukis than it is for the jackrabbits although the way this game has gone nothing's out of the ordinary baker again gets out of it not the second time though as he eats it back at the 41-yard line and [Applause] part of the stop there for the jacks third and 11 coming up crockett kralikowski had one of the early shots at him that's the one baker escaped from but then he was literally running for his life second sack for the jackrabbits third and 11 for baker trips to the right looking that way jackrabbit's at his feet and there's a flag down back where baker let the ball go the pass was broken up by graham spalding and the call is holding against southern illinois spaulding made a great play lenore was lined up down at the bottom of the screen that time ran his slant across the middle baker was looking for him at first couldn't get it to him offense number 76 the penalty's decline brings up fourth down fourth and 11 in the salukis again will go for it from their own 41-yard line they are one of four on fourth downs today lenore and tice daniel are down to the bottom hand to the bottom side of the screen jack's trying to stunt around and get to him he gets out of the reach again baker got the first down yardage catch at the 45. nick baker has been unbelievable avoiding the rush he got it off the heart drop on a fourth and 11. [Applause] i think nick baker is part magician this afternoon the way he has escaped some of the pressure from the jackrabbits he had a back that came out of the backfield in the middle that falls down initially and as he scrambles and rolls away he's got offensive linemen even though they're really not doing much to help him but throws back across his body and finds har trump to convert on fourth and 11. a little delay daishon gales down for just a moment for the jacks out of that mad scramble southern illinois taking on north dakota at home coming up next week two weeks bye week next no no that is next week my bad and then they get to buy and go to northern iowa [Music] salukis already with two valley wins at home against illinois state and at western illinois in overtime last week but can they come back and tie this thing or even listen we will see this is reminiscent of the quarterfinal game last may spencer a lot of room at the 30 before he's finally taken down a gain of 11. stalbert had to come up and make the stop but [Applause] sdsu had dropped back into a prevent defense a softer defense and that draw play delayed draw to spencer there was a lot of room up the middle clockwise again baker taking a shot lenore is out there and made the catch but he was out of bounds and went right at daishon gale after he sat out that one play with the cramp he's back in and you have to expect that the salukis are going to be looking for lenore anytime he's in the in that situation right now and he's i sewed up one on one down that left sideline clearly out of bounds on the play and good coverage there by gaels lenore already has eight catches including a touchdown and we got another injury timeout is graham spalding being looked at this time [Music] a ton of guys going off and then coming back on this afternoon for the jacks with the exception of logan backus again has missed this entire second half i think for most of the rest of them it's been electrolytes are in high demand well a minute and three seconds salukis two timeouts left four downs to get a first down that's the issue dominated for a quarter and a half and led 20 to nothing and then the salukis came alive got it to 20 to 14 at halftime and then back and forth here in the second half [Applause] spalding comes off peyton shafer comes in at linebacker second and ten coming up for baker jack rabbits look like they're to stay with just that straight four-man rush right now they have not shown blitz here much in this last drive looking to go quick left lenore got the grab knocked out by gaels and a gain of right at 10 yards [Applause] now check that seven yards on the catch for lenore so third in short at the sdsu 23 yard line gales coming up trying to get close to the door this time spencer banging up the middle schaefer and sanders and on the stop 50 seconds to play also with a couple of timeouts in their pocket they just wanted to get the first down here now they've got time to work with baker across the middle this is a little high hard trip out there again kale reader the safety and coverage not much of an opening and i think baker knew it he threw that one knowing odds are we're not going to catch this but nobody is let's live for the second down play from the 19-yard line again lenore here to the left reese winkelmann and the jacks trying to get after baker lenore in the corner oh my goodness what a catch for the score by lenore who reached back with one hand and made the snag wow again what an awesome catch and that's thrown by baker where only lenore can catch it watch him reach back with his right hand this is thrown to the outside he curls around with that right hand grabs it one-handed the knee is down he's got the ball it never comes loose that is top 10 stuff right there ladies and gentlemen what an unbelievable catch by lenoir now to the salukis go for the win here are they going to kick the extra point while dhoni is coming on he's on yep for the pat but four touchdown passes for baker lenore 10 catches 147 yards and two scores so gualdoni for the tie and he squeezes it inside the left upright 35 all with 34 seconds to go [Applause] well lenore as you see his numbers there very similar to what he had here in that quarter-final playoff game back in may almost identical numbers in fact and he made some unbelievable catches in that game but i think the one he just made here for this touchdown tops all of those [Applause] nick baker just waiting for his numbers to update here but up over 350 yards passing four touchdowns [Music] [Applause] tell you what baker has been impressive here this afternoon had a bit of a slow start and remember that that drive started with the block field goal yep salukis blocked it with about three and a half minutes to play baker takes him down the field and cole from while he's missed one and had one block today keep in mind a couple of weeks ago he made a 54-yarder in the stadium as well so that gives you an idea with 34 seconds on the clock about where the jack rabbits need to be in order to give him at least a shot at it here in regulation [Applause] [Music] [Applause] while doni gets into it this is gonna go over the head of feldcamp so the jacks will have to throw 25. landon lenore senior out of crete illinois that's his first touchdown grab 10 receptions two of them for scores [Music] and they're not easy catches i mean if you watch these replays just about every one of them is challenged that one is just outstanding that one-handed grab but it's not this jack secondary hasn't been there they have been in position it just tells you what kind of an athlete and what kind of a receiver lenore is he is showing it today big time lenore the brother of lance lenore who was a star western illinois the all-time leading receiver at western illinois in the missouri valley ole dokin going to work he's got kraft out to about the 33-yard line clock ticking jacks with two timeouts let me eat a lot of time here and ole dokkan's just gonna have to he's still on his feet going back the other way there's a flag down this play is going to be dead no matter what happens as canyon bauer makes the catch at the siu 40 but a flag down back where ole dolkan kind of reversed field yeah that's usually where your offensive lineman get caught with some sort of an illegal block and i think that one's going to get whistled on garrett greenfield when olodokin reversed his field it was just an unfortunate time and place for mr greenfield personal foul legal blind side block offense number 74 15-yard penalty is from the previous spot second down yeah one of the things they're watching once a player reverses field like this that's what defenders yep and no tree might have saw him coming but that is a blind side block and negates the catch by bauer jacks would have had it at the 40 but only seven seconds left now and this is gonna go all the way back to the sdsu 18-yard line and we are staring over time in the face you bet because i think at this point yep with the jacks dropping a player back they're going to take a knee and go to ot second straight week now the salukis [Music] will play beyond regulation they had a win at western illinois last week 31 30. and that was their first overtime game in six years tom so now they're going back to back after six years with none they go two weeks in a row with overtime they are seven and four school history in overtime games jack rabbits five and five these two teams that never played in overtime against each other however until today trying to avoid some weather here as well possibly coming in we don't need any delays for that but what a comeback by the salukis again they block a jackrabbit field goal that would have put sdsu ahead by 10. salukis blocked out with about three and a half minutes to play baker takes him down the field goes to lenoir for the score with 34 seconds left to tie it up nick baker 359 yards passing and four touchdowns both teams have more than 520 yards of offense and logan backus will come out here as the captain for the overtime rules overtime rules have been explained to both coaches all we have to determine now is who's going to play on offense or defense first or which end of the field we're going to play same coin as we started with teams on one side or the logo on the other your choice please his choice was choices logo it is uh teams would you like to play defense okay which end of the field would you like to play on okay you come this way police south dakota state southern illinois will start on offense first down the north end of the stadium well that might answer some of the question of logan backus after you saw the coin flip and he turned he started hopping back to the sidelines without putting very much weight at all on that left ankle so that that tells us a little bit about what his affliction was that he suffered in the first half of this contest all right from the 25-yard line southern illinois will have it first each team will get a possession to either score a touchdown kick a field goal the rules will change after the first overtime [Music] and we'll get into that if we get to that point against southern last week at western illinois they had the football first scored a touchdown on the first play play-action pass to lenore kicked an extra point went up by seven western illinois scored and then the leathernecks tried to go for two did not get it and southern won 31-30 so here's baker's having a huge afternoon spencer behind him williams to the right adam and spencer trying to fold it back to the inside got about four yards spencer has been the spark plug on the ground in the second half now you see he's gonna need to take a play off as his helmet comes off in that place so he's gotta sit out one but he has been come up huge for southern illinois in the backfield since halftime a 63-yard touchdown run for spencer here in the second half [Applause] so javon williams stays out there with baker in the backfield [Applause] landon lenoir in the slot left second at seven baker gonna take up right up the middle of the field he's gonna make one more man miss and he's inside the ten so first and goal coming up for the salukis designed quarterback draw well executed by the salukis he turns he looks and all of a sudden he tucks that and takes off and has lots of turf in front of him takes it down inside the 10-yard line first and goal baker's head positive yards rushing despite the two sacks by the jack rabbits so from the eight-yard line [Music] [Applause] lenore out here left matched up against daishon gales spencer sprints out of there a little reverse to har trip and graham spalding saw it got there first lost they're going to put it right about the 10 yard line loss of a couple on the play and it's second goal but you nailed it tom spaulding stays at home watching for that reverse we expect this kind of trickery out of southern illinois and nick hill it's kind of what he has built his offensive play called reputation on and that reverse coming back to the outside did not fool graham spaulding who makes the tackle for loss williams goes off [Applause] hartrup and lenore out here to the left of baker spencer in the backfield spencer straight ahead touchdown salukis they spread things out up the middle they had lenore and a one on one down at the bottom [Applause] and spencer bursts up the middle [Applause] so now gualdoni [Music] on the extra point attempt spencer over 100 yards two touchdowns on the ground [Applause] down and up and good for gualdoni 42-35 and the jackrabbits will have their chance [Applause] and they just cleaned it out in the middle there buried some guys i think they front i think they caught the jack rabbits looking for a pass play right there and we're taking the outside rush and as we've seen the jackrabbits do earlier in this game when that rush comes and they contain baker in the pocket bakers had room to step up and run up the middle so they caught them in that pass rush getting to the outside it was a designed run play and spencer had all kinds of room as you saw on that replay to bust up the middle for the score all right jack staff from the 25. chris soledokan said pretty good numbers as far as yards but the two interceptions today no touchdown passes yet for olodokin a little tight set on the opening carry fake to pierre strong ole dokin across the middle caught by canyon bauer they will mark him at the 11-yard line [Music] some nifty footwork by ole dokin rolling out to the right fakes the handoff pierre strong jr yankee cut across look at him step up and get away from the defense and puts that right on the money for canyon bauer [Applause] from the 11. morgan flips to the right here strong behind ole dokin fake to him over the middle tucker craft touchdown right to the middle of the field again the play action to freeze the defense that secondary gives craft enough time to make that oledokan puts it right on the numbers for craft and the jackrabbits are going for the win offensive unit stays on the field here 10 catches by the way for tucker craft [Applause] southern illinois get some late substitutions on pierre strong joins ole dokin jax going for the win tried to go to zach heinz they threw it off the back of the defender branson combs was there no flags southern illinois for the second straight week wins in overtime [Applause] no question it was a design that's where that play was going to go to try to get it to hinds at the back of the end zone the salukis right there defended it well you can argue all you want that there may have been some defensive pass interference what really matters it wasn't called if there was here's ole doke and just steps back and throws and yeah there's definitely contact there but the linebacker for southern illinois really never turned around to play the ball branson combs but the ball had to go through him to get the hinds jack scored on that exact play against dixie state last week southern illinois might have saw it coming defended it well and the salukis with a touchdown in regulation with 34 seconds left to tie it at 35 and they hold off the jacks on the two-point try in overtime 42-41 final [Music] right back with the final numbers as siu wins in brookings welcome back in overtime southern illinois knocks off south dakota state 42-41 first loss of this season for the jackrabbits they go to four and one and southern improves to five and one overall and the salukis are now three-and-oh already in the valley al-bahi this game was bonkers it was absolutely crazy particularly this second half there was so much offense and we the jackrabbits knew as you see javon williams with this play where he gets absolutely helicoptered at the goal line which leads to a 96 yard touchdown return for the jackrabbits had the momentum going that way but with nick baker at quarterback the illinois southern illinois salukis never give up four touchdown passes on the day for baker that one was the one late in the contest that tied the game up to send us to regulation no i take that back that was earlier on in the fourth quarter there's pierre strong jr first with his big 85-yard burst and the jackrabbits at that point maybe look like they had things in hand they're up 35-21 after that scamper by pierre strong but this is just a couple of minutes later donovan spencer 63 yards back the other way still 35-28 jackrabbits but the salukis blocked a field goal and then this is the crazy catch by landon lenore with 34 seconds left to tie it up over time the salukis get it first donovan spencer touchdown run they tack on the extra point with the kick jacks come right back at it just a couple of plays tucker craft with the touchdown and then wow they go for two and could not fit it in there to zach heinz and the final numbers presented by cu mortgage direct huge numbers over 1100 yards of total offense and the turnovers i heard both sides but the jackrabbits their first three turnovers of the season in this one well in the times that the jackrabbits turned the ball over the first fumble was inside the 10-yard line when they were on their way into score in the first quarter when you're deep in the opponent's territory like that that's a that's a real heartbreaker because you've literally missed an opportunity to put points on the board and southern illinois took advantage of it you know we knew and the jackrabbits knew that the salukis had a high-powered offense coming in this one we said in the open defense was going to be the key well defense is what ended up allowing southern illinois to walk out of here with a win tonight nick baker four touchdown throws 359 yards and this is turning into a pretty good matchup and this is the first win in the last seven tries for southern illinois sdsu had won six in a row salukis break that string 42-41 in overtime
