over for part one of reconstruction at rutgers stadium for a 3 000 mile cross country trip from fresno california the return of the students at rutgers and the way to put on that helmet and jersey is over as east meets west and college football's back for fresno state and rutgers [Music] now [Music] [Applause] oh welcome to espn college football presented by cars.com the birthplace of college football piscataway new jersey has gone through a rebirthing in the last few years rutgers going from the college football after thought to a contender in the big east and expectations high again as rutgers takes on a fresno state team that many feel could challenge for a bcs bid hi everybody alongside andre ware i'm dave pasch first time in college football history then on one weekend every non-bcs conference had at least one winner against the bcs school what was the biggest upset in your mind i think it was arkansas state going to kyle field defeating the texas a m aggies it's a tough tough place to go as we move closer or farther away from the 85 scholarship limit rule you're going to see this as the norm across college football you know andre some feel that if rutgers wins today on its home field that that would be an upset considering how good fresno state is this is right up pet hills alley flying across the country to play the scarlet knights well anyone anytime anywhere has been his battle cry so to speak for this fresno state football team that's the true definition when you fly from fresno california into piscataway new jersey but he's got a lot to prove he's got a young football team our team with some experience with a lot of young players kind of sprinkled in there yeah lofty expectations for pat hill and fresno state greg schiano rucker is expected to be a contender in the big east 3000 miles separate these schools but now a handshake apart kickoff is next [Music] espn's college football is presented by gillette show us your game face for a chance to win huge prizes from gillette and espn visit gillettegameface.com for details and in part by espn game plan see the most college football every saturday to order call your pay-per-view provider phase one of construction on rutgers stadium completed just last night and this is part of phase two in this 100 million dollar expansion project last year this is how the south end zone looked it certainly played a role in rutgers home games last year and it could play a role this year in a different way rob stone it will absolutely play a role dave they've essentially left the back door open here at rutgers stadium when this end zone wasn't closed it was a swirling wind here at rutgers stadium that's not good for anybody now it's a consistent breeze today it's actually deceptively strong coming this way out through the open end zone and the kickers at rutgers have admitted they would much rather kick into the closed end zone area at any point and even head coach greg gianno admitted to us yesterday dave that it is going to affect his play calling he says yes we have a strong arm quarterback that makes things a little bit better but we have to keep the wind in consideration every time we make a call well it'll be a factor dave as a quarterback always liked throwing into the win seemed as though when you get the win behind you balls tend to carry and go over receivers so if you've got a strong arm you don't worry about those things one thing's for sure as you look at greg ciano no matter how windy it is rob stone's hair will not move and neither will greg giano's uh shiano has done a tremendous job at rutgers i remember talking with him a few years ago when he was here and just talking about how poor the situation was academically at rutgers when he took over now they're among the best in the country and pat hill has done likewise a great job at fresno state many think this could be his best team he told us they're not ready to anoint this squad just that just yet and you would certainly expect that out of a head coach that's seen some pretty good teams last year they won nine games after only a four win season in 2006. yeah he felt like 0-1 when he had 18 seniors back that was maybe his best team but a lot of people feeling like fresno state and pat hill this may be the year that they crack into the bcs they've got to take care of business today and right here right now against the good rutgers football team huge game for the big east conference if you put it in perspective syracuse getting blown out of the fourth quarter in northwestern pittsburgh losing at home to bowling green and louisville getting clobbered by kentucky at home so greg ciano knows not only what's at stake for his football team but for the big east this first weekend with those are three losses we mentioned by a combine or by an average of 18 points [Applause] utah beat michigan yesterday so that's one more win against a bcs school for them they're number one among non-vcs teams with wins this decade against bcs schools fresno state is second and bowling green got its 10th with that victory against pitt well i think that that may be an upset in itself as well bowling green against pitt a lot of people thought dave wanstad and the pitt panthers were about ready to turn the corner this year but bowling green had other ideas fresno state wins the toss to first of the second half so kevin gessling will boot it away to taekwon underwood and mason robinson it'll be underwood from the one-yard line and good coverage down field by fresno state as underwood doesn't even get to the 20. sherrod davis downfield for the bulldogs fifth year senior mike teal who battled through thumb injury last year also had a injury on the top of his hand that he played through the rest of the starting offensive player for rutgers you can see at the top of your screen and the biggest question mark how will rutgers replace ray rice cordell young will start we'll see a lot of mason robinson at running back behind teal cordell young had the knee injury last year a lot of a lot of people felt that ray rice would not have had the amount of carries he had had cordell young remained healthy throughout the season a year ago and thiel will throw on first down and hit as he throws and that's why that pass was short intended for tae kwon underwood and uh some pressure from lauren bell to safety so little blitz right on the first play by fresno state that's how they like to use lauren bell in blitz packages he's coming back from an injury himself a year ago many felt that he would never play again because because of the injury i think it was a knee injury but he's back he's healthy and this fresno state defense is a fast fast defense they'll run it here on second down to young and hole up the middle they spun down at the 24 yard line after a gain of about five ben jacobs the middle linebacker the only returning starter at linebacker for fresno state this year makes the tackle well you mentioned mason robinson as well he'll mix himself in with cordell young and they'll see who actually has the hot hand to try to get the running game going talking to greg ciano this week he wanted to run the football that's what they're built on running the football a big offensive line even though they lost three guys from up front they still want to establish the run anthony davis moving over from right guard to left tackle the center rob blazik ryan blazek is the only player in the same spot on the offensive line from last year teal finds underwood for a rutgers first down underwood to the 40 a gain of close to 16 yards jake jordy on the tackle take a look at your impact players for rutgers offensively well the first is uh mike teal the quarterback threw for over 3000 yards a year ago 20 touchdown passes a 58 completion percentage kenny britt all he did last year was set a rutgers record for excuse me taekwon underwood he was a guy or a receiver that went over 1100 yards a year ago and then kenny britt he's the speedster on the outside just kind of a freak playing wide receiver out there we'll get into him as we get deeper into the game false start by rutgers part of the snap false start on the offense number 88 penalty remains down that's on brit and that's a rare mistake from him he and underwood the first tandem in big east history with a thousand yards of peace receiving only the 26th time in the history of college football that's happened pat hill is well aware of how dangerous so rutgers is with those two guys on the outside and he feels that they can stop the run today that uh that will possibly lead to victory after that penalty first and 15 for teal under center threw 13 picks last year in a school record 20 touchdowns ironic play and there's fresno state stopping the run ben jacobs firing into the backfield to take down cordell young he's the glue that holds that fresno defense together 81 tackles a year ago to go along with two sacks just a sophomore a lot of a lot of football left to be played by ben jacobs the coaching staff very very high on their middle so linebacker loss of three for cordell young play fake and teal gonna hit kenny britt getting to the outside brent inside the 40 and finally pushed out of bounds [Applause] this is how you replace a 2 000 yard rusher you go with the talent and the strength of your football team and it happens to be on the outside with the two wide receivers nice little screen pass you start up the field come underneath you see the big right tackle mike gilmartin out in front blocking and then it's just speed by kenny britt this guy here a lot a lot of people feel 1200 yards a year ago if he is to duplicate that we may speak we may see him playing on sundays second team all big east last year and he's just a junior that's why i phrase it that way 6-4 215 pounds he saw the speed on the outside after the catch here's teal going for underwood that's a great pass underwood dropped it the pass was perfect and it should have been caught ben jacobs the middle linebacker was trying to cover a wide receiver on that play well you say how do you replace a guy that rushes for 2 000 yards and you go to the outside you saw kenny britt the play before that one just a little bit overthrown on the outside shoulder of tae kwon underwood but you've got 2 000 yard receivers returning one guy scores eight touchdowns the other guy scores seven to go along with his jersey number taekwon underwood but that's how you do it and if you want the running game you soften them up with a passing game spread it around outside spread the defense and then just let the young guys run through the middle remember young last year just 18 carries and he fumbles the ball here and did well to get close to the line of scrimmage after picking it up off the turf chris carter on the tackle ray rice a school record 2012 rushing yards last year the five other guys combined for 260 and they wanted as you were talking about andre to take some of the pressure off rice and let young and mason robinson run the football last year but young got hurt torres acl in the third game yeah mention the fact ray rice would not have had the amount of carries had cordell young stayed or remained healthy throughout last season but it is what it is but it allowed ray rice to go over the uh 2 000 yard line second run draft choice of the baltimore ravens teal going to the end zone and just overthrown there was some contact but no penalty flag it was intended for dennis campbell and sherrod davis a transfer from oregon had coverage fourth down in 13. rutgers has a new field goal kicker and a new punter and they're going to try a field goal san santee a redshirt freshman replacing jeremy ito welcome to college football your first kick is going to be a 47-yard try jeremy ito was about as automatic as there was to ever come to the program here at rutgers and since nt gets his first shot at it officially a 46-yard attempt let's see if that win that rob stone was talking about coming in from behind helps him well how many kick it like that never had a chance a lot of nerves for a young young place kicker that was not tipped either at the line just a mishit by san santee so rutgers fails to come up with points on its first drive fresno state's offense on the field when we come back [Music] this game is being broadcast in high definition on espn hd back in rutgers stadium packed house sold out every home game for the second straight season and greg ciano trying to counsel young san santee he knows that t will get another opportunity of this game for a big kick yeah he knows he's going to have to probably lean on the young man at some point in this game doesn't want to get that confidence rattled early in his young career that's a great thing about college football you don't see that at the pro level with the head coach trying to console the kicker after he misses usually he's cut but not in college a lot different on first down bran stater able to hit ryan matthews terrific sophomore had a great rookie season a year ago and he's out near midfield joe lefesh on the stop they had 145 carries 866 yards to go along with it he shared time with lanier miller another junior running back but bran stater he is a guy that he really came on into his own last season over 2600 yards passing with a 62 percent completion percentage really stepped up for the bulldogs grand stater was the mvp of the humanitarian bowl third year as a starter and some pretty good quarterbacks at fresno state trent dilfer david carr former first round picks billy bullock as well here's matthews on the run this time just gashing the rutgers defense to the 35 got about 15 there courtney green made the tackle we're in piscataway new jersey the birthplace of college football and rutgers and fresno state are scoreless with andre ware and rob stone on dave pasch construction just completed in phase one of a 100 million dollar project at rutgers stadium phase two underway excited about football in these parks with good reason very straight bowl appearances two consecutive bowl victories rutgers got as high as number 10 in the country a year ago they're unranked to start this season so is fresno state in one poll ranked 25th in the other branstader getting pressure trying to hit chaston west in the pass incomplete pete tavertoff with cover with the pressure rather on bran stater good job by the defensive tackle taverdoff just continuing you see tim branstader there big senior quarterback he's a big strong guy came to fresno state just 190 pounds a big slim kid with just a good arm and developed into a pretty good quarterback put on a little bit of weight got all the fundamentals down of how to play quarterback and turned in a great season a year ago grant staters already graduated in the masters program right now matthew's in the backfield and the tale of an eye on second and ten gets stuck great penetration by the front four for rutgers blood by alex silvestro let's take a look at the impact players for fresno state trey well it's uh tim branstader the quarterback up first over 2600 yards a year ago 15 excuse me tom brad stater 15 touchdown passes only five interceptions bear pascal he's a guy they really like to go to talking to branstader his third down and close he wants to go to bear and then on the outside the surprises aj jefferson the guy that led the country in kickoff returns early season games always seem to come down to how special teams play aj jefferson will play a big part for fresno state bear pesco not in the game here on third down and 10 as fresno state spreads it out with five wide and empty in the backfield branch stater crushed and the pass well overthrown joe lafege and george johnson were both back there as bran stater just got rid of it before he got smoked tremendous pressure you want to disrupt the rhythm of the quarterback just on the outside right there you'll see it just come free and right in the face of tom branstader well that is an uncomfortable dude you're not ready to throw the football and all of a sudden you've got it coming right in your face you got to get rid of it to hold on the field position to give your kicker a chance to knock one down kevin gessling with his first attempt it would have been it's a quick kick yesterday is normally the field goal kicker and it goes into the end zone and it will come out to the 20-yard line robert malone who's the punter was the man that tried to keep it from going into the end zone so wild formation there on that quick kick no score rutgers ball when we come back espn's college football is presented by cars.com where confidence comes standard [Music] one of the mantras for greg schiano has been chop wood now it's family for the scarlet knights who trying to build on an eight-win season from a year ago and get back to where they were two years ago that was set up beautifully for fresno state on this quick kick well it's a nice setup right here and uh robert malone right there if gesling had an arm you know nobody's going to hold you going down the field just raise up and throw it to the holder you know that's something that coaches in the press box they may take a look at that for uh for later down the road in this game that was the punter who is serving as the holder there showed some pretty good wheels almost got down there in time to keep the ball from going into the end zone so each team drives into plus territory and comes away with nothing midway through the first quarter four wide receivers teal to the air and that pass right on the money to kenny britt and pushed out of play by sharad davis after a gain of about 14. well it kind of looks like two boxers you know a big fight and both guys are really good and they have good reputations just kind of in the middle of the ring feeling one another out in the early rounds that's kind of what this game reminds me of fresno state they go down they're being very conservative as well rutgers they go down hit a big play to kenny britt but still very very conservative early in this football game inside handoff to cordell young and good running play on first down to the 38 got a handful cornell banks on the tackle for fresno state can you talk about cordell young i'm going to go back and just mention the fact that those two receivers kenny brick with the first down catch and he's a guy 4-4 speed as well as tae kwon underwood on the other side 4-4 speed and he's a he's a 400 pound bench press for a wide receiver unbelievable six foot four 215 pounds running that fast and that's strong that spells the next level well 10 years ago they didn't have those kind of players here at rutgers but greg schiano is starting to recruit some terrific talent ray rice obviously won his brick is wide open deal with a great toss over one of the defensive backs and it's a first down to the 43. the fifth pass by mike teal to kenny britt here's rob stone with more well brit and underwood the number two returning receiving tandem in the nation sunday football on their radar espn scout sink todd mache told me today the senior underwood third fourth round guy biggest concern is he's only kind of a one-speed receiver but his partner junior kenny britt more of a vertical receiver he's a second-round ranged guy right now and there's definitely talk that he may come out early he's got a senior quarterback and a senior compliment at the wideout position playing next to him pretty good tight end and kevin brock he was the man who caught that last pass and they go back to the ground and young sprinting to the outside and knifing it back to the inside got about eight to the 35 aj jefferson on the tackle well this is what the passing game will do for the running game it'll kind of soften up a defense you'll see right here nice little crease for cordell young to run run through it's because the linebackers now have to play pass first with mike teal going back and it's nice little underneath draw play to cordell young softening the line the linebackers up and then coming back with a quick hitter to cordell young it's going to be there all day for rutgers if they continue to have success in the passing game eight yards on the ground on first down little play action and teal trying to hit a man out of the backfield incomplete jack corcoran the fullback was the intended receiver the rutgers last year set a school record for scoring and for total offense greg giano still making some changes john mcnulty is uh the offensive coordinator in his first year he had been with the school as the wide receivers coach in 04.05 and was the assistant offensive coordinator last year also a new special teams coach chris rippon brought in here's taekwon underwood making some nifty moves dumped at the 22 game of 13 in a first down gillette presents kickoff week continues tonight as tennessee takes on ucla of the rose bowl the balls come in ranked 18th in the country college football primetime presented by jack links as part of college football week presented by gillette i'm gonna get back to my hotel room flip the tv on and get all in the middle of that one right there that's going to be a good football game rick new heisel in his first game as the head coach at ucla excuse me phillip flemer unveiling a new quarterback at tennessee here's young again a big hole to the 15-yard line got about six is tennessee a little bit under the radar in the sec everybody's talking about georgia and florida and alabama after it's a convincing win on saturday night over clemson you got an offensive lineman down kevin haslam the left guard but to answer your question i think that's exactly what's happening with tennessee and with a young football team that's how you want it you want to fly under the radar have a lot of people not give you a lot of credit but uh tennessee you know seven four and one i'll tell you what this is going to be a great matchup going out to uh to los angeles to take on the bruins and haslam's okay good to see him hop up and big fella sprinting off he's been battling a sprained ankle [Applause] fresno state originally was to play ucla the opening weekend and play kansas state week two but then kansas state backed out the bulldogs were looking for another opponent rutgers was looking for an fbs opponent as well and so they're able to schedule this and 3 000 miles later here are the bulldogs it's a 16th play for rutgers today five already have gone for 10 or more yards teal gonna take off and ankle tackle at the 10-yard line by michael stewart very close to the first down it looks like he's got it by a yard well they are very conscious of where kenny britt is on the field double coverage on the outside it looked as though he was going to have just press cut coverage out there and you look out there but all of a sudden there's a guy going to help out over the top i'm going to help my man out jake jordy the free safety coming over the top to help his young cornerback out or help out aj jefferson but they are very very aware i don't want to stay afraid but aware of where kenny britt is located on the field [Applause] you look at what happened the first 140 years of rutgers football they had won 1 000 yard receiving of two last year here's mason robinson who's going to split carries in the backfield with cordell young actually lost a yard there as sherrod davis comes up in run support and makes a big hit that's what you got to have and a team wants to just bloody your nose and come downhill at you you've got to have those corners when there's a short side to a formation corners got to tighten down a little bit and sherrod davis there to make a nice secure tackle for fresno state so second down and goal after a loss of one on the pledge underwood to the bottom of your screen grit at the top and corcoran motioning out there as well tenth play of the drive robinson gets the call and look at him push the pile splattering it to the three got eight yards and about four of those came after contact ben jacobs led the charge defensively for fresno state he's not a big guy you know you look at it 510 190 pounds just pushing the pile through the middle and right there nice soft creases the offensive line they're creating for nato when we talked to greg ciano he said they wanted to be balanced playing against fresno state now nine rushes nine passes i don't know if you get any more balance than that date perfect and that's uh you know how rutgers won its games last year it wasn't just ray rice you mentioned kenny britt and taekwon underwood each with a thousand yards receiving look at that yard the yardage there and passing for mike teal 103 in the first quarter still with time left so rutgers calls a time-out third and goal coming up when we return to rutgers stadium ricciano wanting to make the most of this third down in goal on fresno's three-yard line so he calls it time-out coming up later how far will fresno state go for a good game coast to coast tell you more about that as we go and also our second edition of wear it out andre talks about whether it's better to be a big fish in a big pond or be a big fish in a small pond and make it a big pond rutgers two of three so far on third down [Applause] they've really been mixing it up in the passing game with teal finding underwood brit the titan kevin brock also trying to hit corcoran out of the backfield mason robinson is in the game of tailback now it'll be robinson oh great play as robinson gets hog tied by lauren bell and it'll bring up fourth down and goal boy this is the fight in the phone booth right here condense the formation down and just try to get leverage and right here fresno state they're going to pass the test first get great leverage and quick snap rocks presence on fourth down fresno state not fooled how about that rutgers calls two plays during the timeout trying to fool fresno state on fourth down kyle knox read it and the fresno state defense holds you know what it tells me is that greg siano has a lot of confidence in his defense you know he wants the points and i always preach take points early first in a football game you want to be the first to score but this is third down here they get great leverage great push up the field and they feel the holes right there and then come right back on fourth down as rutgers tries to quit snap mike teal goes right back to mason robinson tremendous amount of penetration by the fresno state defense they answer the bail fresno state has to start at its three-yard line and finally the crowd getting into it for the first time and now a stoppage of play [Applause] need to reset the play clock to 25 seconds let's check him with rob what you're talking about it means rutgers has faith in their defense andre what kind of faith does he have in his freshman field goal kicker after that last shank calling to play saying there's no way we're going to kick it lanier miller on first down rob doesn't get anything george johnson made the play defensively here's what robstone's talking about that 47-yard attempt by san santee that's a tough one there and you got your first kick as a as a collegiate athlete i think you go ahead and kick it the the next time down you got to build some confidence it's basically a chip shot for san san t so i go ahead and kick that one you don't know when you got to go back to him sends the wrong message to him by passing that one up plus don't you just take the points down there absolutely in the game take the points early always play fake grand stater in the end zone and the pass is tipped and incomplete jason mccourty is a terrific db stepped in front of marlon moore and so to bring up third down and 10. you know i think it's with san santee when you pass up an opportunity like that to give a kicker some confidence what does it say for the remainder of the season that's the guy you're going to hit your wagon to for the remainder of the year that's a tough tough call i think you kick the field goal in that situation get him some confidence and you to come away with it with points early in the ball game plus give pat hill some credit you'd have to think he mentioned it to his guys hey don't be surprised as deep as they are if they come out and go no huddle on fourth down if we stop them pat hill remember pat hill was around bill belich for five years when he coached with the cleveland browns as belichick's assistant there in the 90s make it as a false start here i mean that was belichicki and in terms of the way they were able to stop that and be ready for that on fourth down prior to the snap false start on the offense number 52 half the addition to the goal remains third down well you rarely see you know richard pacheco the center there you rarely see the center jump you know maybe you're trying to draw the defense off and just kind of play it squeeze the ball with your hand a little bit trying to get that old nose tackle to just jump off where you get yourself a free fight all kinds of tricks go down or go on on the field he's the only new starter on the offensive line for fresno state third down and 11. the students are back this place is full kind of been waiting on this crowd to get into the game and they're going to run it and again rutgers all over it boy this is a physical first quarter anthony harding hit hard there by george johnson if i'm in this situation what you want to do is maybe on first down you take a shot down the field try to get yourself a pass interference call but you have to take care of the football you've got an experienced senior quarterback who you know will take care of it for you come back and now it's punt and play defense you do not want to turn the football over deep down on your own into the field robert malone who was last seen trying to track down a quick kick and couldn't keep it from going into the end zone when i'll do what he does best and that's punnett rutgers back there but malone hammers this one good punt robinson muffs it then scoops and does well to return it inside the 40-yard line darren newborn on punt coverage made the tackle mike teal has good field position when we come back first down for rutgers at the fresno state 39 in the scoreless game closing moments of the first quarter and a flea flicker teal going deep fresno state not full and it's an interception in the end zone marvin haynes was back there along with two fresno state players you have to give credit to dan brown the defensive coordinator for fresno state two big stops in the goal line situation right around the goal line they come up big the very first play they try to hit him with a little flea flicker hand it off inside and then pop it back to mike teal mason robinson inside and mike teal throws this one up and i mean there is coverage everywhere number 19 right in the middle of your screen marvin hayes is there to make a tremendous play they don't bite on it the coverage is there there's a lot of respect for tae kwon underwood and kenny britt and you have to respect or admire the discipline of the secondary for fresno state and that's a team is you can tell so far so well coached not only by pat hill but by dan brown as well the defensive coordinator more on his story after this play first down from the 20. they'll keep it on the ground with ryan matthews and good job by jason mccourty the corner to make the play no gain we're talking about you know dan brown he had cancer surgery last month so in august he's been in practice undergoing treatments and this is the second cancer surgery he's had in the last year first home was just before last season he underwent chemotherapy and didn't miss any games he was deemed cancer free before the bowl game but it came back but dan brown still fighting misses some practice time every now and then but even then he goes in he's breaking down film putting the game plan together for game day back at rutgers stadium for the second quarter the stock on cool zone is always up this time of year hot and humid on september 1st here at rutgers no score there might be more to the kicking story with the rutgers scarlet knights here's rob stonk well dave i came over to the rutgers sideline to keep an eye on the freshman kicker sansanti and i noticed him pointing to his right hip and then kind of sliding his hand down his hamstring while talking to a trainer they went right to one of those treatment boards and receiving extensive treatment right now with stretching and some other work so maybe it's injury related why they didn't use them yeah they went forward on fourth down inside the ten and did not get it here's a pass by grand stater intended for azeroth tutu that is incomplete and a hit by joe lafege that may have been a reason why it was incomplete you know when they go to the elbow that's when it's serious you know it's not any of that massaging and being delicate they're trying to get deep down in there when you go to the elbow yeah that's that's a tough one well he missed a 47-yard attempt his first as a collegiate and then frankiano electing to call two plays in the huddle out of the timeout fresno state was not fooled they stopped in both rutgers nothing to show for 134 yards of total offense in the first quarter they ran 12 more plays than fresno state did in that opening frame here's bran stater and that pass deflected up the line and incomplete that will bring up fourth down alex silvestro got a pawn at that time now this one comes out and this is from a senior quarterback and it's just flat out ugly and i know he got a little pressure from from the outside from by the defense of rutgers but that one is going end over end that looked like a kickoff or a field goal attempt more so than a pass coming out of a quarterback's hand it didn't look tipped you're right at first i thought it was tip but looking at the replay it was just a bad throw robert malone punting from his five robinson at the rutgers 40. so the knights should get good field position again short kick and for the fourth time today they're going to have excellent starting field position this drive will begin at the 47-yard line in rutgers territory and i got a question for you on that last pass that came out of the hand of tom branstad stator how does pressure how does water get to the second floor pressure pressure my friend right here you're gonna see it right in the face of him coming right at him and then it causes one of the that's just flat out ugly teammates will be ripping them a little bit once they check out the film on that one i was trying to see where you're going with that pressure water thing that i think i figured out the face of the corner here's yarn on first down big hole up the gut to the 45 in fresno state territory another eight yards on the ground moses harris on the tackle right now rutgers is able to run the ball in fresno state they've mixed in the past well but they've got no points it's because they've had success in the past game when you talk about a bit the big receivers on the outside and kenny britt you talk about the other guy on the other side tae kwon underwood that softens the defense up you go from a condensed down inside trying to stop the run now you got to pay a little more attention to the pass game softens things up and it's a little bit easier to block it up inside by the offensive line 16th play today for rutgers in fresno state territory teal hanging in there as the pressure comes and grit on the drag route appears to have the first down at the 43-yard line sean plummer on the tackle he does so many things well kenny britt who runs the deep routes well the nice little underneath routes very talented wide receiver [Applause] [Music] now as we mentioned hot and humid here in new jersey we'll take it because as everyone knows it's not the same in other parts of the country in particular down in louisiana with hurricane gustoff hitting this morning and certainly we're praying for those that have stayed in louisiana those have who have fled and fled yesterday here's a running play on first and ten for young and he's going nowhere maybe a half yard andre you live in the houston area and i know you've spoken with some some folks back there uh how are things in texas right now i spoke with some relatives this morning and things seem to be okay i mean there's some some rain and of course they're going to expect more as as the storm passes on through but not nearly as much as when katrina went through three years ago yeah it's uh incredible that here we are three years later talking it's absolutely amazing and uh just seeing some of the shots today of uh the water going over the levee and some flooding going on in new orleans but again uh our prayer certainly uh going out for the people that have stayed in louisiana and those that have evacuated great breakup underwood had a touchdown of that pass was a little bit longer but aj jefferson got in there with the left hand and knocked it down you talk about the unsung hero of this defense it's aj jefferson and boyd does he have a task today that's how you play defensive backs young men out there around the country that want to play corner right there just nice inside leverage getting your hand up knocking the ball down he's got two pretty good ones that's coming at him today well lsu moved its kickoff yesterday to 11 a.m the saints moved to indianapolis for now and they'll play tampa bay in their regular season opener on sunday tulane and the university of new orleans evacuated here's a big third down and ten teal going deep again man wide open oh off the finger tips of kenny britt it would have been a touchdown but brett couldn't pull it in i mean just over the outstretched hands or fingertips of kenny britton he gets behind damien owens on the left side nice job with the eyes you see a nice little shoulder hint for mike teal and great inside position and now it's just i'm behind you i'm just going to turn on the speed and if he just puts a little bit more air under the football they're walking and celebrating the crowds into this baby with a shank on the punt and uh fresno state will have the ball at the 15. we were talking about the fact that lsu moved its kickoff yesterday from a 5 p.m start eastern time to 11 a.m rob stone you were there in in baton rouge what was the mood like then and and the talk there it was a very subdued death valley you know the capacity is about 92 400 another 20 to 30 000 there on game day they said around maybe the 70 000 was there everybody was kind of calm in fact i spoke with an lsu football official about an hour and a half ago asked him how things are going he said right now baton rouge getting hammered worse than it was in for katrina the team and the staff currently riding out the storm the plan is to have practice tomorrow at one and play their game versus troy state at tiger stadium saturday if that changes both those programs have a november 15th open so it's not going to be a huge deal for them all right rob thank you fresno state taking over unable to run the ball lanier miller dragged down by ryan d imperio who uh played sparingly last year after coming back from a broken leg that he suffered two years ago they've got some good linebackers here at rutgers like the imperial and mania brew a highly touted wretched freshman it looked like it looks as though that hurricane inflicting a little more damage in the state of louisiana than before between fort katrina texas not yet that's not so much yet but it's uh we've had a space to go before we start to feel the effects down in houston your second and eleven grand state with time and caught at the 22-yard line that's gonna be about five or six yards shy of a third down as uh of the first down rather as isaac kinter made the catch college football action kicks off on espn this saturday night in the sunshine state miami and florida squaring off with college football primetime presented by hampton hotels at eight eastern time and i couldn't believe what you said in the meeting last night i mean to me that just seems like a blowout waiting to happen but florida crushing miami you don't think so i don't think so i think they've got they're talented enough with the skilled position you know randy shannon's going to have him play a tremendous defense and they might just have enough at quarterback to uh i don't expect miami to win that game but it's certainly going to be closer than most things bran staters throw too high and incomplete and tender for marlon moore oh boy the acc needs something good to have and even if miami can keep it close against florida after virginia tech lost to east carolina and clemson just got embarrassed by alabama the surprise not that they lost but how they lost and it just couldn't look the year of wake forest yeah maybe in the acc a lot of people think florida state's as talent as anybody in that conference as well the acc in the big east did not look very good over the weekend with syracuse and of course pitt losing at home and louisville getting clobbered by rival kentucky another short kick robinson waiting for it and again decent starting field position for rutgers just outside the 35-yard line well phase one complete on this 100 million dollar expansion project here at rutgers stadium phase two underway no score so far welcome back to piscataway new jersey nil nil between rutgers and fresno state no football team outside of the university of hawaii is going to log more air miles this year than fresno state but you know it's not easy traveling the bulldog way take their trip here to newark new jersey for example they boarded their charter airplane which was smaller than normal which required them to have a refueling pit stop in wichita it also meant every seat guys was occupied on that flight they left the campus around 7 30 in the morning saturday didn't get here till night which meant no practice saturday all that traveling though guys you know coach hill is going to use it as a little bit of an underdog rallying cry through the season 3 000 miles away first time fresno state's ever played at biggie school as robinson picks up about five a lot of these fresno state kids have never been this far east look at the first two games almost 11 000 miles they'll they'll travel i'll tell you what it's tough on the big guys right there the big fellas sitting down there they're in those little bitty airplane seats and you're going to usually get a space in between you and when you're uh shoulder to shoulder with the next guy that is a tight tight squeeze for a long trip they said going back there dre it's about six and a half hours after the game tonight with that stop again in wichita to refuel here's a pass to brit in the flat that might have been a backwards pass and he's tackled just shy of the first down marker by lauren bell you know brett on that incompletion downfield the previous play after he caught a pass on a drag route he left and was holding his shoulder and you wonder if maybe that impacted that attempt in the end zone on that deep pass i don't know he kind of stuck that stiff arm out on that one and it was the right shoulder that you're talking about and you're talking about a strong outside receiver in kenny britt mention the fact earlier that he bench presses over 400 pounds big big frame and a fast guy been very very impressed with him in this ball game that last play was officially a running play third down and one robinson not going to get there fresno state whipping rutgers at the line of scrimmage marvin haynes coming in around from the secondary to make the tackle after everybody in the offensive line was stood up talking about who you've been impressed with it's that defensive front of fresno state they've had a couple of short yardage situations and they're getting the leverage in getting under the pad level of the offensive line of rutgers winning the battle of the trenches that's what games usually come down to and right now the advantage goes to fresno state rutgers punting on fourth down and two and that's fielded at the five yard line dangerous play by moore to feel the punt inside the ten and he gets wrapped up at the seven why don't you just let that go take your chances let it go into the end zone now you've backed your quarterback up inside the 10. no score fresno state's ball only 43 yards of total offense so far for the [Music] bulldogs [Music] do you know game day go to collegegameday.com to find out espn college game day built by the home depot saturdays at 10 a.m espn's college football brought you by papa john's order by text message or online at papajohns.com and kingsford for a chance to win the ultimate bowl game experience go to espn.com keyword search kingsford [Music] back at rutgers phase one of this 100 million expansion project of rutgers stadium complete with the new sky boxes uh club seats and phase two they'll add about 13 000 seats in a new locker room here at rutgers stadium running play for fresno state on first down from its seven and ryan matthews gets three fresno state they've had some bad field position but some of it's been self-inflicted you see here marlon moore is going to feel this punt that's the gauge right there about the 10-yard line if it's gonna if you catch it inside the 10 yard line usually the rule is let it bounce go into the end zone if it's just outside the 10 yard line you can field it or fair catch it but right there he pins his offensive unit back in tight this is the second time that uh that fresno state has been pinned back this on this part of the field and part of that stat is the fact that rutgers defense is playing well but fresno state's average starting field position is its 15-yard line that's the first time bear pasco has touched the ball today across uh the 17-yard line picks up the first down pasco is a mackey award candidate after 45 catches a year ago says he models his game after jason whitton of the dallas cowboys second on the team last year in receptions you see him just kind of funneling his way through the defense man coverage and that's a tough route to cover when you're in man i don't care if it's a tight end wide receiver running back and they're crossing from one side of the field to the other if you can you got a guy that can catch it in stride like bear pascal that's a tough one on the defense [Applause] so a first down for fresno state from the 18 grand state are in trouble sack inside the 10. manny of brew and jamal westerman westerman had eight sacks a year ago of brew one of the more talented redshirt freshman linebackers in the country yeah jamal westerman is a guy that you mentioned the fact had eight sacks last year led this team in that department played as a freshman now that uh just right there relentless in getting the brand stator and uh and wasn't gonna let him go a lot of help a lot of bodies around the quarterback tremendous push through the middle of that formation for rutgers boy this is a nice little battle nice little seesaw battle defensively going on between these two teams always tough for a 210-pound running back to block a 250-pound linebacker oh big hit as pascal makes the catch and then pinballed by d imperio and courtney green and this will bring up a third down [Applause] 6 45 remaining in the second quarter scoreless game fresno state finally getting some positive yardage coming up later andre will wear it out on program development we'll explain that's ahead and then later fresno state and what it's been able to do against bcs teams under pad hill in case you're wondering utah has the most wins of an on vcs school against bcs teams this conference got its 14th yesterday winning at michigan on third down they run lanier miller and he's taken down by joe la fedge at about the 24 so that's going to be five yards shy of a first down trying to pull fresno state will punt trying to fool him in the chess match dave with just everybody's thinking pass is third down and long trying to sneak a little drop play to lanier miller underneath and maybe pop something as you got defensive backs turning with wide receivers going down the field and uh just tell you what rutgers defensively they have been just as solid as fresno state are you surprised if fresno state's got 59 yards total offense very much so you thought that their offense would be much more potent and again part of that is the starting field position they've been backed up all day robinson fair caught it so the play is whistled dead at the 37-yard line no score here in new jersey five and a half to play until halftime welcome back to the birthplace of college football remember that game andre back in 1869 that six to four thriller when rutgers knocked off princeton in the first ever college football game got the centennial cannon here in piscataway that was stolen by princeton and has since been recovered scarlet night cheerleaders and arching band getting everybody ready for the home opener of course of franciano's mantra of chopping wood and also the scarlet walk knights are trying to continue to build this program mascot very familiar to especially people on the east coast as rutgers coming off an eight-win season back-to-back bull victories and remember this was a program that for the first 135 years or so of his existence struggled to be 500 and now they're starting to get players and get wins as well that's how you build it with players that's for sure and greg giano has done an outstanding job in that department pordell young on first down rutgers getting a lot of rushing yards on first down 13 more there marvin haynes on the stock when you ask yourself what's been the story of this game for rutgers especially on the offensive side of it they've been able to run the football against fresno state now when they get in short yardage situations fresno state's been able to come up big they've moved the football gotten themselves into scoring position but yet and still they have not come away with points five times they've been at the 50 or inside fresno state territory [Applause] teal with a nice throwing lane it's complete to tim brown got tremendous speed 5 865 pounder from miami florida junior well you got the long striders in underwood and brit and then tim brown comes in and he just gives you the quickness that you look for and the speed to go along with it can really really scare defensive backs inside handoff on first down again a big hole on first and ten young picks up 12. well you sense the crowd wanting to get into this football game just waiting on this rutgers offense or this team to give them something to cheer about but watch right here nice little pull around by the left guard in that situation kevin haslam back in the game kicks out and allows for a nice little hole there for courteous teal going to the end zone and it's incomplete and that might be a penalty on brown there was definitely contact as the ball was in the air and brown was jostling with aj jefferson and the offensive player definitely had a hold to jefferson but was he interfered with first that's the question well i hope aj jefferson spit a little the extra time has interference on the defense number 28 yard penalty for the previous automatic first down a little extra time running some sprints because he's got a long afternoon ahead of him when you start talking about all the receivers for rutgers right here giving his quarterback an opportunity to lead him out out away from the defender that's about a four window how's it on the sidelines i don't know that one's that one's close and you know he's actually holding position against the defender and they call it on aj jefferson that's on anybody that should have been on tim brown first down at the 11-yard line they give it to young he's inside the 10 to the seven got about three or four just take a look at that again let's take another look at this when you when you look outside and right here you see working on tim brown working on aj jefferson right there you see the hand he's actually holding him off and not allowing aj jefferson to make a play on the football he's got every right to the football as well young again powers to the five a helmet goes flying as young reaches the four third down and goal rutgers was here earlier in the game and failed to get into the end zone on third and fourth down and goal so far so good for uh for graciano and the running back by committee with mason robinson and cornell young subbing back and forth trying to throw some some pretty big shoes left behind by ray rice they got 76 yards on the ground between robinson and young young gang the bulk of the carry so far in this game frankiano was pretty comfortable though with his backs even though he lost the best they've had at rutgers and ray rice third down and three teal to the end zone batted down incomplete it's ben jacobs covering the tight end keith brock well now what you went for it on fourth down earlier and greg ciano says you know what we're going gonna take the points this time yeah this is the smart move here in a close football game against a good football team and ben jacobs she called his name earlier dave the coaches love him and mention the fact he's the glue that holds this defensive unit together he started 13 games a year ago as a true freshman let's check him with rob stone guys since we saw t getting stretched and loose he has not taken a practice swing into the cage well this isn't going to help no he misses that one as uh the timing was off there a bad hold and greg schiano again trying to keep the guys positive he's trying to stay upbeat greg siano because he knows that that young man's confidence has really taken a dip in this ball game and it starts to play between the ears for kickers when it goes bad and all of a sudden you get a bad snap the timing's thrown off special teams so underrated at the beginning of a season watch this it's all got to be timed out the snap the hold right there low snap the holder can't get it down t's hiss his foot works thrown all off and then it's just going to knuckleball towards the uprights not even close but the coach to his credit didn't even blink well we we've seen a lot of poor special teams this weekend block punts block field goals blocked extra points and why do you think that is early in the year that special team seems to be behind the offenses and the defenses around college football get to that right after this uh this play nice little uh toss outside caught by a newborn that time go ahead dragon ball spend so much time as a coaching staff getting everything else the offense ready the defense ready and some coaches they don't spend a lot of time in special teams i'm one that believes that's the fastest way to change a game is on special teams a big kick for a win a good punt return a punt block things of that sort they change games so fast and coaches just don't have enough time don't spend enough time in those departments here's second and two they run it and close to the first down is ryan matthews he appears to have the first down gillette presents kickoff week continues tonight as aryan foster in tennessee takes on ucla out in los angeles college football prime time presented by jack links as part of college kickoff week presented by gillette on espn tonight at 8 eastern time how good is ucla we'll begin to find out tonight we'll see up close and personal and i mean after usc which looked great by the way sanchez looked tremendous in that thrashing of virginia but after usc i guess maybe oregon's the second best team but it's anybody's guess after that who's the third best team grant stater able to recover after losing the ball and then throws it away so it'll bring up third down let's go back to the studio and say hello to darinoka dave hello and just to let you know coming up on the olive garden halftime report we will give you the very latest concerning ohio state tailback bee wells also the latest on hurricane gustoff and its implications on the college football world this weekend also going to head out to the rose bowl where reese and mark and lou will get us all set for that game between the vols and bruins that's all coming up at the half guys i'm interested to hear what the latest is on beanie wells if you know hopefully for an extended period of time that certainly would hurt ohio state's chances of winning a national title on second down running play to matthews out of bounds at the 34-yard line de imperio on the tackle matthews has been the spark so far for fresno state in that running game but uh going back real quick to uh san santee you got a guy that's coming in to kick for the first time in his career there's games you can play like you know at the end of practice whether or not we're going to run wind sprints is whether if he makes a kick or not and then moving back and certainly how you you cut the sprints down based on whether or not he's making kicks a brand new kicker you have to find ways in practice to apply that type of pressure to him so that it carries over in game day in this type of situation you certainly would think that that's a lot of what they did in camp as that pass is battered around and then incomplete three times darren newborn tried to catch it couldn't hang on to it now it's fourth down clock stop rutgers will get the ball back and have two timeouts to work with try to get some points before intermission but boy fresno state struggling to even get the ball past its 35-yard line six possessions six punts now for the bulldogs a lot of first-game jitters going on between both teams yeah one thing about it is you get a clean slate you go into halftime you get to clean some things up and come out and play football for an entire half of uh i still have an entire half of football left here malone with end over ender to robinson that's the second mop for robinson he's been able to scoop it up both times but boy special teams played just ugly for rutgers here today i mean they've had two times they've been inside the 10 they've got no points you know at worst it should be six nothing if d can knock down some field goals or if coachiano gives him an opportunity on the one after the big time miss from 47. that one's understandable that's a tough one for your first field goal but i think that chip shot should have been given to the young man give him a chance to build a little confidence you saw the numbers on ryan around mike teal as teal was able to dump it off after underwood was able to get free for a moment gain of only three yards on the play clock running again two timeouts to go for rutgers going to the hurry up offense they've got an experienced quarterback just trying to get some type of points here thiel's pass through the hands of tim brown incomplete brown smaller than underwood and brit by at least five inches and that pass was a little bit too hot that one was it was well timed on the part of my teal though he had felt a little bit of pressure coming up the middle of the formation and he actually let it go and was timed very well on the outside to tim brown once you got a strong armed quarterback that hand the hands got to come up the head's got to come around because the ball is going to be on you in a hurry teal's really cut down on his interceptions [Applause] as he throws incomplete trying for brit and rutgers will have to punt his decision-making has gotten much better over the last three years but mcteal today is struggling though he did have one pass it should have been a touchdown and brit just couldn't pull it in on a bomb you know they've gotten so used to uh to ray rice around here they may go into halftime in the locker room looking for waiting on ray to suit up come out give them a spark in the second half raising baltimore though this has been uh some ugly offensive football and special teams play so far in this first half well the big question is how do you replace a guy that rushes for 2 000 yards and is one of the best players in the history of your program and ray rice and as a high draft pick second round by the baltimore ravens yeah that was headed to syracuse changed his decision and came to rutgers and helped to build this program and i think it parallels exactly with something we'll get into later in this game when you start to talk about greg ciano and the rutgers program as a whole pretty tough too when you've lost a guy that maybe one of the best players you've ever had just to as you were saying look around and not see him there that punt almost got blocked delegano though with a good kick it's high it takes a fresno state bounce though and the bulldogs will have it around their 20 with 24 seconds left the way things are gone in this half they may say you know what we're just gonna down it get out of dodge here and fresno state has been hovering around it's 20 all day long in terms of starting field position but you're coach gianno and again you've had great success the last two years you've gone from having no success for 130 years to often going to bowl games and winning bowl games and then you lose a guy like ray rice what's your message to the team well i think the message is that you've got to dig within and they've got to have some some long-term success to try to replace a guy like ray rice but ray did so much for the program i think even in recruiting when you go out you can sell the fact that ray you know you could be the next ray rice at rutgers and kind of continue down that road fresno state keeps it on the ground then a big play i don't know if they were just planning on having anthony harding running thinking they wouldn't get a lot of yards out of it but now you might use your timeouts you've got two remaining and they are going to call one here with the ball out near the 40-yard line now he can do it all he is a young running back just a junior but has all the the big play ability six foot 215 pounds can run block catch the ball well out of the backfield for fresno state you know you talk about ray rice and you think about and sometimes you know maybe we don't realize just how important a guy is to a program i mean rutgers i remember being here doing games 10 years ago there's nobody in the stadium rutgers was lucky if it won three or four games in in a season and then all of a sudden they're in the national title hunt for a little bit two years ago last year they get to 10th in the country they probably weren't that good although maybe they should have won more games than seven in the regular seas but now the expectations are so high and you've got guys who are now freshmen and sophomores who weren't around when ray rice was a freshman and they weren't winning well i think the success is often the program and not just one player and though that it's going to be tough to replace a guy like ray rice yeah when you look at the program as a whole and that's what gotiano is kind of hanging his hat on that he's built enough at rutgers and put enough talented players on the field they're going to feel the loss of ray rice certainly because he's such a talented player but the program itself should take over and sustain itself when uh when you lose a player like ray rice brain skater throwing it to the invisible man there that was 20 yards wide left wiley was i guess the intended reason he was the only guy he's thrown some in here that have been just flat out comical here in the first half and i don't know if it's the grip on the football or if it's just the pressure of the rutgers defensive front in the face of tom brandt's stater but uh he's he's throwing some ugly passes here in this first half you know you go back to rutgers electing to go for it on fourth down instead of that field goal we were talking about and right now that that might be enough to win the game maybe the difference in the game the way the uh these offenses are playing grand stater has it batted down by tavertoff got a meat hook on it knocked it down now it's third down in ten eight seconds remaining in the half yeah he's one of the captains of that defense and of this team he's a just a film junkie he missed three games last year pete tavertoff and uh with an ankle injury but he is a tough hard-nosed player with a motor that just never ever quits it's the guy that uh that you want on your team rutgers was fifth in the country in past defense last year and had 41 sacks they've got good people up front lost eric foster who was a good one fresno state gonna keep it on the ground and harding is taken down and the clock stops rutgers may have called a timeout with one second left and fourth down coming up why not one more play says greg schiano will take our chances maybe with a punt return or maybe we block a kick after all been a lot of special teams problems here today maybe it's a time to have fresno state yes make a mistake on specialty seven possessions for fresno state they've punted every time and 27 plays you see it right there no points on the fresno state territory both offenses struggling a little bit good thing is that one second left here in the first half you can go in and you know you have two excellent football coaches and gregiano and pat hill they'll go in and it'll be a totally different ballgame when they come out in the second half you know both with the nfl ties greg schiano spent some time with the bears before taking over miami as the defensive coordinator we talked earlier about pat hill being on bill belichick's staff with the browns think of the guys that were on that staff alcro kirk ferrets nick saban bill belichick eric mangini was a public relations intern yeah a lot of coaches we talk to they want you to taste the kool-aid you know and enjoy it and that by that they're just trying to sell you a nice bill of goods so to speak about what's going on in the program when you talk to these two guys you come away believing what they're preaching about their program fresno state on fourth down going to run a play and that will be the final play of the half as brian matthews takes it across midfield no score after one half of play at rutgers stadium here's rob stone coach fourth down and goal in the first quarter what led to the decision to go for it well we we it was a two play deal but yeah we should have called timeout or just got back in the huddle and ran as a mistake how do you do it we're a little bit out of whack we just got to calm down and play football we're playing good defense we got to just slow everything down coaches players everybody how do you dress your freshman kicker in the locker room he'll be fine coach thank you craig schiano saying a little bit out of whack seems like that's the case with a lot of teams on this first weekend no score here's dari in the olive garden halftime report great leverage couldn't pull it in getting ready for the second half at rookier stadium no score between the scarlet knights and the fresno state bulldogs well andre and i have petitioned the ncaa to start over and they said yes we will well if you make it a 30-minute game no pre-season in college football we just witnessed it the first half of this one so you go in and you know re-scramble everything and now you come out and play the ring start the regular season how about oh for seven on third down for fresno state rutgers twice inside the 10-yard line no points uh if you're the two head coaches what are you telling your team at halftime well i think you go in and you just tell your guys just settle down we you know we've we've practiced we've worked hard all off season long to get ready for this point in the season i think nerves are everywhere across the board and uh if you're fresno state you go to the run game if you're rutgers that's where the success was you go back to the run well let's hear what pet hill told this team here's rob stone with pat hill well coach you just had the whole team in a circle on the field what'd you tell them well we our defense has kept us in this football game rutgers has played good defense we haven't gotten out of the shadow of our goal line we got to play bulldog football this second half we have not played a physical game up to this point and we've got to get some energy going to start this second half so it's up to us to get this thing turned around coach appreciate your time rob even pat hill wanted to say hey forget forget the first 30. we're just going to play 30 here well he got his petition into the ncaa as well and uh here we go to uh to start it all over again i mean there's a lot on the line here for both schools fresno state trying to impress the voters right now not ranked in the ap poll on 25th of the coaches poll as you look at the first half stats rutgers trying to get a win for the big east after three losses to teams and maybe you could have said they could have beaten over the weekend right look at that those two stats right there oh for seven on third downs and then starting position your own 17-yard line that is very very hard to make a living on in a football game that's tough treadmill right there and it's hard to have 27 plays run in plus territory and have zero points but greggiano's team has managed that but again mike teal you saw the highlight right before we came back had kenny britt brit most of the time's going to make that catch and it's 7-0 but as it is scoreless game as we start the third look for both teams and both coaches to really lean on the running backs the the quarterbacks in this game 47 for mike teal 33 percent from tom branstader and the running backs though you've had some success running with cordell young he's looked good as well as ryan matthews so look for these two teams to go back to the running game back to the fundamentals the basics behind an offensive line or their respective offensive lines to try to get something going offensively and it seemed like a lot of those 76 yards rushing for rutgers they got on first down but when they got to the second and short third and short they couldn't pick up the first downs and fresno state had zero first downs and again miserable field position and we thought before the game that it might come down to the kicking game and so far it has rutgers has struggled in the kicking game and maybe fresno state can get something done here because last year aj jefferson was the top kick return man in college football and he's going to get his first crack today that's if craig gianna decides to kick it to him here to start the third quarter he averaged just under 36 yards per return two touchdowns and had a long of 96 yards for a touchdown last season so he's a guy that can really really get this fresno state bulldog team going they'll just take field position past their 30-yard line that would be good enough for them just 30 they take the 20 at this point in the game delegano will kick off for rutgers again louisville pitt and syracuse all losing so the big east could use one jefferson will get a shot across the 20. and rutgers able to get down there and keep jefferson from reaching the 30-yard line damaso munoz made the special team stop not very good numbers for tom branstader five of 15 53 yards but as we've seen in the past from him he's a guy that can get hot 15 touchdowns only five interceptions a year ago drew for almost 3 000 yards last season pat hill wanted to be physical they were 14th in the entire country last season running the football so look for him in this half to really really lean on the running game each team last year put up exactly 32.8 points per game this year zero apiece as they run it on first down ryan matthews who rushed for almost 900 yards a year ago as a freshman tackled by kevin mallis matthews had 14 touchdowns that tied for the national lead among freshman running backs and touchdowns with lashawn mccoy and no sean you see last year right there the points per game boats teams averaging exactly the same 32.8 points per game so far they've got a way to go if they're gonna get to last year's average here in the second half four yards on first down now second and six at the fresno state 33 again matthews a burst past the marker to the 44. maliced on the tackle but that's a gain of close to 11 for the sophomore tailback while they go behind bobby lepery the left tackle he had cole popovich the left guard they tried the other side this time and andrew jackson and kenny avon and have some success so ryan matthews he is a talented guy who averaged six yards of carry a season ago and right now they are just latched on to him here in the second half early matthews again rutgers able to get back there manny of brew terrific looking red shirt freshman and peter divert off his plate a whale of a game both back there and pat hill made a good point and we were talking about how bad things were offensively you got to give some credit to rutgers defense because they did a great job well this is a it's a little bit different you get a little bit better starting position when you get out around your 30-yard line to start a drive remember they've got a new offensive coordinator doug nutsmeyer and he hadn't been able to really call his game because they've been pinned in so many times early in that first half it's the best starting position that fresno state has had in this ball game he's replacing jim mcelwain who was on display on saturday night as alabama torch clemson it's a totally different call sheet when you're down inside your 10-yard line as opposed to your own 30. fresno state their first charge timeout and the play clock was winding down so pat hill forced to call a time-out no score 13-12 to go in the second quarter much time once again for wear it out and today we're going to talk about whether it's better to be someone like no rich rodriguez you start out at a glenville state you move up the ladder and you eventually get to a place like michigan where you've had great success or is it better to be a guy like greg schiano to make success at a school like rutgers that hasn't happened i'm one to believe that you absolutely make the success and you create it it's better to go in and become and not just be a spoke in the wheel so to speak you can kind of create your own wheel and people talk about and they throw graciano's name around about penn state and going to be the next joe paterno at penn state how about being the next joe paterno while you're at rutgers and build this program and and do something where it's the first time in a lot of uh a lot of instances even going down to recruiting when uh when i chose to go to the university of houston had a lot of options to go elsewhere but you want to go somewhere where you can make a difference and i think graciano his he could be a difference maker right here at rutgers university you have such extremes in college football guys like pat hill and greg ciano that have talked about raising their kids in the same environment over the course of time then you have guys like bobby katrina who take three jobs in a matter of 12 months time pass near side is caught marlon moore made the grab to midfield that's a gain of eight and the other thing that you know guys like pat hill and greg shiano can be proud of academics look what is done they're third in the academic progress report and number one among state schools yeah look at the names there but stanford number one navy duke and then rutgers right there and scott walker heads up the academic support system right here for rutgers university and craig and greg ciano he has done an absolute fantastic job with his football program and i don't know for greg if it's going to be a matter of money he can get paid at rutgers uh the location all that's gone into it money's going to be there for greg's right of course they have to win wiley is wide open and there he goes inside the 30-yard line the first big play today for fresno state on offense courtney green eventually made the tackle but it's a first down for fresno state inside the 20. well they bring the inside the outside receivers in and then they kind of leak out leak widely out right there nice little in the you see him right here nice quick little three step out route and get him going catches him right in stride everybody else kind of pinned in based on the formation sneaks him out to the flat nice timing as well on the part of tom good block two from marlon moore downfield as wiley equals his reception total from a year ago matthews stacked up by tavertoff who had him high and kevin malus had him low so nothing on first down as they try the middle he said that this was going to be an entirely different second half of football we got two fabulous coaches and pat hill and greg sciano on their respective sidelines pat hill right now they've gotten the ball first this is the best drive that they've put together mixing a nice mix of play calling by doug nutsmeyer as well the offensive coordinator mixing the run with the pass a little bit trying to keep this rutgers defense off balance see the top of your screen and so far what's going on in this drive the seventh play best drive of the day for fresno state oh great tackle by d imperial who wrapped up matthews as he ran by him or attempted to run by him so big third down coming up here for fresno state big brian d imperial he is a physical specimen was out last year part of the year with a broken leg and just kind of played his way back in as the season progressed this year came into camp and uh and really really had a fabulous uh spring as well as the fall camp and you'll see him he's just kind of one of those throwback guys six three 240 pounds can run and really looks the part he's 6-3-2-40 manny of brew another linebacker 6-3 235 third down and six for fresno state fran staters pass nearly intercepted he overthrew bear pasco by a mile and then it was almost picked off by zaire kitchen and now fresno state will try a field goal on fourth down grant stater to me looks like a guy that's uh got the this watch in the defensive line rush him as opposed to having your eyes down the field and focused on what's going down what's going on in coverage he's watching the pass rush so rutgers has gotten to bran stater early in this ball game to where it's disrupted his rhythm first attempt for kevin gestling he's a freshman like san santee for rutgers and guestly more successful than t and we finally have points at the 10 33 mark in the third quarter so after eight play 57-yard drive kevin gessling with a 31-yard field goal on his first collegiate attempt and fresno state leads at rutgers hey we got a highlight and some points took 25 minutes [Music] welcome back to espn kickoff week presented by gillette back in piscataway new jersey home of the rutgers scarlet knights who now trail three to nothing as somebody finally scores fresno state's kevin gessling with a 31-yard field goal and his first college attempt right now the mvp of this game kevin gesslin with a nice field goal and we'll see if that changes uh who knows but the way that first half went that might be it in terms of offense good drive by fresno state short kick by gessling underwood dangerous as a return man but fresno state with excellent coverage underwood is undercut at the 26-yard line well here at rutgers stadium battle of fresno state nine winning it's a year ago rutgers eight victories last season three points and now rutgers with an opportunity on offense ahead we'll talk about fresno state's success on the road against bcs team since pat hill took over in the late 90s and later talked about rutgers offense in the fourth quarter a year ago and remember no ray rice to lean on in the fourth quarter like last year but they've done a pretty good job with their backs young and robinson so far today this will be young and he gets tackled shy at the line of scrimmage lauren bell who's made some plays today from a strong safety position with another stop you just wonder who is going to come out at after the half and establish the line of scrimmage and be the more physical football team and right now it's fresno state though they've got a player that's uh that's down that's nick o'haran and you heard pat hill tell rob stone we need to be physical so i think he got that message across to his team at halftime hopefully he's going to be all right he plays well over the tight end first year as a starter for pat hill at uh at that strong side linebacker position you know andre we've seen a lot of cramping yeah this weekend in college football which is no surprise that usually happens usually happens the first week of the season guys that you're putting a lot of stress and a lot of strain on that body doing a lot of movements that you hadn't done for a an awfully long period of time and no matter how you train and you run it's different when you're in a game and it's intense during the course of a football game fresno state trying to carry momentum over from the baseball season to football season they came out of nowhere to win the 2008 college world series they were the fourth seed in their own region had to get out of there win their super regional as well of course and here's pat hill's quote said what they did in baseball as an inspiration for everybody hopefully that momentum can carry over but what we do in football is very different and maybe he's referring uh to a play off there because it's essentially what you got in baseball you can you can drop a game here and there in the playoff series in baseball but in football it is uh every week you have got to be tuned in and turned on because one loss could essentially cost you a chance at uh playing and doing some cut you're actually cutting your goals short for the season yeah you got double elimination in college baseball of course for a football school like fresno state that's not in a bcs conference it's really single elimination as you look at boise state in hawaii the last two years out of the whack they were undefeated going into their bowl game and that's why they got into the bcs as a non-bcs school young breaking a tackle and close to the first down marker at the 36 yard line he appears to have the first down will harding made the tackle and leading the way big anthony davis their team's best offensive lineman and cordell young seems to uh you know if there's any question about whether or not he's 100 i think he's answered in this football game nice job right here pulling around joe cochran the full back leading the way for cordell young and both teams want to establish the line of scrimmage both are doing so here early in this second half and in previous years that would have been an extra five yards because someone got his face mask but there was not a pull or a tug and they've eliminated that incidental face mass penalty as that toss was over the head of kenny britt and thrown into double coverage incomplete just to finish that up you only have 15 yard face masks now in both the college and the program they've gotten rid of the incidental i like a couple of rule changes they made as well as whether whether or not a guy is in or out and there's no gray area anymore around the sideline he's either inbounds or he's out of bounds as well as the face mask penalty 15 yards or they just don't call it at all if it's just a little brush i like both changes in the game and the 40 25 play clock we've seen some mistakes but it certainly moves the game along with also on the out of bounds plays with the clock stopping and then restarting quickly as that pass is caught at the 50 by brit and it's another rutgers first down so fresno state on its first drive moves the football ends up with a field goal and now rutgers on the move well you ask yourself what's the difference in kenny britt this year as opposed to last year he's become a fabulous route runner you know has stopped depending really on his speed to get himself open right now he really concentrated this off offseason on becoming a better route runner and i think you see it in this game there's a lot of guys a lot of double coverage but yet still he's coming up with some nice catches here in this game back to the ground and young trying to squirt through a hole and it closed at the 48. only a two-yard gain for cordell young gillette presents kickoff week continues tonight great game between tennessee and ucla and don't forget next saturday miami and florida will square off college football primetime presented by hampton hotels at eight eastern time on espn tim tebow in the heisman trophy a second time can jonathan crompton when lead ut university of tennessee to a uh victory tonight dave claussen unveiling his version of the spread offense at tennessee that's tonight following our game here on espn at ucla as young as taken down at the 45. and then of course as we mentioned next saturday and andre did i did ask you a question there about the heisman trophy can tebow win it again can he win two only one guy's done i think so and uh you know they're just gonna have to put wins together i think that's what he'll ultimately be measured on i don't think he'll have nearly the amount of carries that he had last season that average per game is going to go way down and maybe he uh the stats for his passing may go up as those carries go down they've got a talented group of guys around him that will take a lot of the pressure off tim tebow you're a voter because he wanted last year does that cloud your thinking at all not at all not whatsoever right that pass too tall maybe alligator arms a little bit by tae kwon underwood as the safety was coming in lauren bell incomplete it's fourth down but that is a legitimate question because guys and voters you know old school will think that way and some only want one to have only one two heisman that kind of whole deal factors into it that is an excellent question but not on not here it uh if the guy's the best he deserves the vote will you or some of the other guys that have heisman trophy votes get that message out hey let's not judge a guy based on the fact that he's already won one let's let's make it fair is that something you do you reach out to the other voters well i think everybody has kind of their criteria on how they vote we'll see yard line good punt coverage by rutgers george johnson a defensive end down there to make the tackle construction going on here in the end zone they'd like to construct some points in rutgers down three nothing midway through the third that's where the first ever football game was held back in 1896 here on the campus of rutgers at college avenue gym brand stater has a man wide open caught by azera 2-2 inside the 10 pushed out of bounds inside the five-yard line grand stater airs it out on first and 10 and azhara tutu got behind the secondary boy this is just taking a shot down the field here just come out after uh after a punt and you're just going to take a shot watch brown stater his eyes watch him go inside and then now he sees azira tutu wide open down the sideline behind the coverage now you just won as a quarterback throw that extended hand off so many times you see guys overthrow under throw a receiver there he puts it right where he could catch it and now it's just a sprint to the end zone they're able to just kind of nudge him out of bounds but nice job by tom branstader looking off the coverage allowing his receiver to get behind the secondary 77-yard pass play to the ground matthews to the corner touchdown fresno state [Applause] it looks like pre-season is over and it's time for the regular season to start and here we go fresno state they've they've come out of that deep sleep they were in early in the in the first half of this ball game watch this one now it's just a sprint to the corner nice job sealing it off right there and allowing for ryan matthews to get to the edge of the end zone fresno state now finally got themselves rolling here in the second half he had 14 touchdowns rushing a year ago that tied for the national lead among freshmen with joshua moreno mccoy extra point good by gessling and it is 10 to nothing fresno state so we go a whole half without points and then in eight minutes this was a quiet crowd to start this game and now it seems as though they're really really relaxed kind of blown away and surprised at how the fresno state bulldogs have come out in the second half and bran stater looked a little bit calmer on that throw let's check in with rob stone guys i spoke with former fresno state and current espn nfl analyst trent gilford about grand slater the other day and dover has been in contact with him through the years and told me he's mature beyond his ears he likes how early on fresno state kind of spoon fed him the offense and how now they've made a little bit more multi-dimensional more of a playmaker the one thing you'd like to see him improve on is his drop back passing game andre you know that comes with just allowing your quarterback to do that more than seven times a game game now todd mcshay of espn and scout sync said branstad he's got that ideal nfl size and arm strength to move up the board though he'd like to see greater mobility which is something he really worked on extensively this summer and also like to see continued improvement in limiting his forced throws right now he is the sixth rated senior quarterback rated as a mid to late round guy but mcshea said this is a guy who could very easily and very quickly move up the nfl draft board yeah he continues to play well this season fresno state has one of those magical seasons that we all talk about and then he plays well in the all-star games when they come out and do all the measurables and things of that sort he can shoot right up the board well tom branstader made the point that you know two years ago brian braun people were talking about him as a top five pick he actually had a good year statistically last year but his team doesn't play very well and he slides whereas some other guys uh maybe statistically don't have a better year but their team does and they move up that kick goes into the end zone and back directors will start at the 20. that's certainly a big play for bran stater and fresno state now 10 to nothing over rutgers and it's mr teal's turn we'll see what rutgers can do here uh down 10 nothing your thoughts on on fresno state and what you've seen here in the first eight minutes and obviously pat hill in his speech about being more physical that's that's had an impact i think coaches earn their money when they go into halftime and how you make the necessary adjustments coming out of halftime and out of the locker room and pat hill he went in and he said something maybe we could be a fly on the wall in there but he said something at halftime that absolutely got his team fired up and they look like a different football team here in the second half [Applause] see if rutgers can do something on offense first down from the 20. here's young and off he doesn't trip he's got at least the first down he stumbles to the 24-yard line how many times have we watched rutgers and they've got another injured player down but just a fingertip away from having big plays we saw the play outside wide to kenny britton and there with cordell young almost popping a long run it's just been so close but yet it hasn't happened for the scarlet knights that's the left tackle anthony davis it was ben jacobs that tripped up cordell young and kept him from getting a big play well we want to remind everybody of course of what's going on in the gulf coast and the good news is that gustav hurricane gustaf has been downgraded to a category 1 hurricane it hit new orleans earlier this morning 17 of louisiana is without power and i think thankfully in preparation a lot of folks were able to get out of town and some decided to try to tough it out and stay in new orleans and you certainly hope that everybody's okay i think one of the as well the levees were able to hold in this instance and so uh you know that's that's as well a good thing to kind of limit the flooding and limit the amount of water that that city was going to take on andre was down there in plaquemines parish a few years ago on some of the cleanup after hurricane katrina and the thing that shocked me most was the fact that the levees not necessarily in new orleans but in the surrounding areas where not a lot of people talk about it he's talking about the city but all these folks that live in the surrounding areas the levees were not very high and supposedly they did a much better job of preparing those levees for this hurricane and perhaps that will reduce the casualties and the damage this time around fantastic guys good to hear and that's that's news that the storm continues to kind of downgrade itself and the severity of what it could cause will just be lessened along the way hopefully it dissolves and moves out things everyone can kind of get back to get back to normal so we certainly appreciate the beautiful weather we have the opportunity to sit here and watch college football and fresno state has come alive here in the first eight minutes or so of this third quarter now greg shiano hoping that rutgers will come alive offensively a blitz and that forces teal to throw it away and so fresno state puts rutgers in a third and five it was uh sean plummer who was in the backfield forced that early toss by teal he came from the outside and uh you're gonna see him come from the outside but right up the gut and play action you have to get off that play or get off the play action part of that if you see or sense a blitz coming sean plummer disrupted the entire play mike mike teal the senior quarterback didn't pick it up he comes a little bit late and forces uh teal to make a decision to just throw the football away and again your left tackle vinnie davis is out of the game kevin haslam the left guard has been moved to left tackle and howard barbieri is in the contest here's tim brown in the catch with the first down and twirled out of play at the 39-yard line the rutgers fans want a penalty flag for a late hit but won't get the call sherrod davis on the stop but it's a gain of 15 in a first down now that's a nice job of playing quarterback you get blitzed by nick bates and it's man coverage and you identify it and find tim brown the crosser coming underneath and out the back side throw the ball right in front of him where he can catch it and turn up the field good job playing quarterback in that instance by mike teal three of eight third down through the air they go back to the ground and down goes cordell young remember in the first half rutgers was running the ball well on first down not in the second half john monga along with kyle knox there for fresno state yeah kyle knox was a guy that was a red shirt last season macy sees a lot of time on special teams at that strong outside linebacker position but he's a guy 6-1 215 pounds not a big guy that you put over the tight end but he is a special player the young player the coaches like an awful lot so it's second down and 13. fresno state showing blitz teal with time brit makes the grab in fresno state territory bumped out by sherrod davis one and down every mike teal go to your best player kenny britt what would you like about this one with kenny britt is the ability to catch the ball away from his body that gives you a chance to be successful as a wide receiver but watch the route right here you see teal and a nice little hint and in rhythm throwing the football but watch right there catching the football with your hands out away from your body as opposed to letting it get in bouncing off the shoulder pads for an opportunity for a defensive back to come in and get his hands on the football 62 catches a year ago led the big easton receiving yards young with the cutback spilled at the 44. he got about four john munga the first to greet young a little bit better there on first down after the two previous first down running plays or stops and how about that here andre we gotta get you suited up with one of those yeah i guess that's real not in my best day could i grow it that long my friend look at it it looks like it's going to he could take off and fly right out of the helmet is that natural coloring or does he get that done somewhere well man dreadlocks are dreadful locks that's what that one should be that's funny he's a guy that had six and a half sacks last year pretty good player what a dude that's a lot of pressure on a quarterback for a defensive tackle getting six and a half sacks second and six young up the middle that hole closes quickly it looked like he was there still got three but chris carter making his first start replacing whack defensive player of the year marcus reilly sticking his nose in there to make a play you know it's taking a while you talk about rhythm of the quarterback and the rhythm of an offense kind of getting itself going well play calling is kind of the same in itself with when you talk about offensive coordinators john mcnulty the offensive coordinator for rutgers finally getting himself going this is a good job in this drive of calling plays as well as doug nutsmeyer for fresno state got himself going the last drive you're getting the rhythm of calling plays as well just like playing the position of quarterback teal to throw on first down that pass behind britt almost picked off but a penalty flag comes in aj jefferson got a good call for interference so do you think the offensive coordinators might have been a little nervous going into the game first time calling plays especially if you're talking about fresno state pass interference on the defense number 28 that's a spot foul automatic first down doug nutsmeyer in his case you know when you start drives inside the 10 yard line it's tough to put together a play sheet for getting out of there basically you're just trying to protect the football and not allow for a turnover and a quick score by uh by the opposing team and then when you talk about john mcnulty they've just they've driven the ball down they just hadn't been able to come up in short yardage situations fresno state has been just a little bit tougher in that that part of the game doug nutsmeyer spent the last two years coaching mark bulger and the st louis ran quarterbacks as a former player in the nfl at quarterback position first down at the 39-yard line young cameron in the backfield oh boy kyle knox forget the dallas cowboys that's hard knocks right there about five yards deep in the backfield he's listed as an outside linebacker but he puts that hand down and gets down in a three-point stance as a defensive end watch this that's a big kiss right there dave bill raftery would be impressed second and 14 after that four yard loss and again the first down run defense for fresno state much better this quarter than it was in the first half that's the second or third negative play on the ground in first down this quarter thiel going to air it out brett can't make the catch well covered by sherrod davis gillette presents kickoff week continues tonight as tennessee meets ucla at eight eastern college football prime time presented by jack links part of college football a college kickoff week presented by gillette on espn tonight who do you like tonight andre in that game i got to go with tennessee there's just too many question marks at the quarterback position for ucla and they can get some consistent quarterback play then i think you know with it being a home team or a home game for them they can keep it close with a lot of talent at tennessee [Applause] here's teal on third down and 15. it's a screen pass joe martnick touching the ball for the first time gets to the 36 rutgers might go for it here fourth down at about seven i'm not sure they they have a choice but to go for it i think in that instance they're just trying to pick up a big chunk of it and get fourth down about as close as the mark to the marker as they could get with uh with sam santee he's play he's a guy right now playing with very little confidence as a kicker that's nick bates back up linebacker shaken up you know the other option might be you might do this if you had a veteran punter is to try to pin them deep because it is fourth down and seven but they're not going to kick a field goal they're going for it and we come back play the game for rutgers granted 207 remaining in the third quarter and it's only a 10-point game but the scarlet knights have had so many opportunities in plus territory this is the 36th play they have run in fresno state territory today and they have no points fourth down and seven from the 36-yard line they hold here they're gonna have excellent field position to start their next drive four wide receivers teal with time now the pocket breaks down teal set kyle knox there again and fresno state takes over on downs the red shirt freshman kyle knox providing even better field position for fresno state and you talk about the necessary adjustments at halftime watch kyle knox here right up the in on the inside working against mike gilmartin the right tackle they're moving him around kind of their pass rush specialists along the defensive line they list him as a linebacker but he is putting his hands down putting that hand down on the ground and uh getting to the quarterback anthony davis was out there too back in the game at left tackle so the starting offensive line was out there but again no points two missed field goals including a 22 yarder and twice they have failed on fourth down including fourth down inside the fresno state five another touchdown might seal the deal rutgers got to play some defense here remember fresno state had a quick 80 yard drive but two plays the last time they had the ball they tried ryan matthews here on first down he goes nowhere ryan d imperial with the tackle well this better be a wake-up call for this rutgers football team because there's no reason to believe that all of a sudden you're going to flip a switch and be able to get it done offensively mike teal a senior quarterback he's sitting there but you know you got to get up sometimes rally the troops get guys fired up and slap a couple of offensive linemen up you know on side of their heads and let's let's get going you know right now there's no time to feel sorry for yourself get up let's get the guys going grand stater on second down through the hands of marlon moore incomplete looked like the pass was there and now it's third down and nine an opportunity for rutgers to make a stop can get it back [Applause] andre was talking about rutgers attitude on the sideline rob stone what do you have uh attitude is pretty much non-existent looks like they're posing for a team picture right now the offense and you know greg he's all about his defense and if it's really important he'll come over and address the offense and he is not deeming it important enough to get adam right now but no players stepping up no coaches barking at the ellen on the rutgers offensive sideline right now well maybe the defense will get the offense inspired if they can come up with a stop on third and nine grand stater getting away from a couple players but taverna eats them alive at the 43-yard line a loss of about five on the play and fresno state will have to punt tavertoff is playing a great game today no doubt about it we talked about a guy with a high motor high energy type player a senior defensive tackle for rutgers pete taverdoff he he's uh he's fired up he'll hit a couple of guys on the side of their helmet to get them going not just you know whenever there's a lull i think it's the quarterback's responsibility when you come off the field you got to get guys they believe in you you're the leader of the football team you got to get them going [Applause] nearly blocked taken at the 17-yard line by campbell gets a block but a penalty flag down campbell might go again two penalty flags are down campbell inside the 20 to the 10 and campbell is in touchdown rutgers will it stand up i don't think so penalty flags back at the 28-yard line i think it's going to be a block in the back and this one's going to come all the way back and that was the block that sprung campbell would have been an 82-yard punt return for a touchdown and exactly what rutgers needed to close out the quarter during the return lock in the back [Applause] watch it right on the middle of your screen you're gonna see it right about there there's one and there's another one there's actually two that occurred and that's why two flags come out at a little bit different times but this one's going to come right back rutgers thought maybe they'd gotten themselves back in this ball game right here here's where it is obvious right there's one which is close that's close that one right there was in there there comes another one actually if the head is out in front and it's questionable on whether or not uh the head was in front and the guy's trying to change directions that's the tough one when a guy's changing directions but yet and still you're trying to get that helmet out in front to keep from hitting him in the back wow that one was very close have one untimed down because it was a penalty with uh no time on the clock on the return so one more down before we go to the fourth quarter and you know rob was talking about you know the bench and just how there was no emotion i mean that that's the type of play that obviously gets you excited now it's almost you're more deflated than you were before because you have a mental error on a penalty well you know you're the senior a senior quarterback on this football team they're looking at you for leadership especially in a game like this one it's been it's been tough all day long you got to do something to pick pick this football team up first down from the rutgers 19. final play of the quarter they give it to young tripped up in the backfield and down he goes wilson ramos made the play on cordell young so it'll be a second down and long when we start the fourth quarter this could have gotten rutgers back in the game that right there was ruled a block in the back it negates an 82-yard punt return for a touchdown and it remains 10-nothing fresno state this game is being broadcast in high definition on espn hd tennessee and ucla coming up later tonight at 8 eastern on espn right now rutgers trailing fresno state 10 to nothing as we start the fourth quarter here at rutgers stadium fresno state trying to impress the voters and prove that it might be a team that could run the table still wisconsin and ucla on the schedule for fresno state as well as its conference which they have not won since 1999 and they tied for the conference title that season young gets the call on second down and long grabbed from behind and brought down to the 25 that's a gain of six kyle knox on the stop and here's darinoka in the studio dave thank you time for our taco bell studio update perhaps you missed it on sunday night colorado colorado state hooking up in denver that's josh smith picks it up when the bounce goes 93 yards for the kickoff return touchdown he had 160 kick return yards colorado starts off in style three touchdowns better than the rams guys so many big special teams plays this first weekend will we have another one here today that could decide the outcome in the fourth quarter it's going to win a lot of football games especially early in the season third and five teal needs a completion he's got it his tight end kevin brock makes a great catch the former walk-on who until last year never caught a pass comes up huge a great athlete he just gets behind the coverage and i think this is this has timed out very well watch him right here just kind of work right along in there and watch mike teal as he delivers the football right as he passes the linebacker right now you're passing him off to the secondary excellent throw over the top of the linebacker ben jacobs as you mentioned he only played two years of high school football kevin brock yeah he was a track guy played basketball as well that was a 25-yard game play fake teal looking downfield underwood is wide open slips away from one man gets a block at the 30. underwood finally tackled at the 26th now the rutgers beams and players are into it well he got a nice block from his counterpart on the other side of these as he was coming out the back door and kenny britt helped him to escape out the back side and pick up about five extra yards a plot he threw a haymaker on moses harris the strong safety on the opposite side of the field man that is playing some team football right there first down and 20 our first down and 10 at the 27. remember rutgers has failed twice inside the 10-yard line to get any points young with roon to the 20-yard line jordy holds him up and some help comes but it's an eight-yard pick up on first and ten let's put the spotlight on tonight's levi's 501 original taekwon underwood a great player and also very active in the community he speaks at high schools and works with special olympics as well he's part of the jeter's leaders program favorite causes leadership healthy lifestyles and higher education first team all big east player a year ago tremendous talent six 285 pounds senior that seems to have energized this rutgers offense greg chiana says he's the type of kid you'd love to have as a father second and two out of the backfield is the fullback jack fortune he's got the first down to the 15. so move the chains for the scarlet knights will harding made the tackle well the play that got this thing kick-started was the pass over the uh over the middle to kevin brock that got it going and then a nice little underneath pass or right in the middle of the field to tae kwon underwood picked up a nice block by kenny britt a big run by cordell young and now they are off and running but they've been here twice before dre they've been inside the tent twice came away with nothing they got to get at least a field goal here and make it a one possession game first down from the 15. teal with time throws underneath underwood inside the five underwood is in touchdown rutgers that'll only improve his stock in the community type one underwood looked like two fresno state players ran into each other on that pass attempt to underwood because there was two fresno state bulldogs in the area well listen it was a nice little underneath option route that gave him the ability to go inside or outside if you feel the pressure of the defense go one way he puts the brakes on and stop and goes the other way and it was tied up just right by mike teal nice deep zone drops by fresno state hits him and watch this watch him kind of as he uh comes into the screen right there and now you feel the pressure of the defense on the outside he stops starts up again and now this is just all athletic ability on the part of taekwon underwood and the reviewing to see whether he got the ball across all you got to do is cross the plane with the ball before the knee goes down and pretty close it's close but the momentum and where he's going to come out i don't think there's you know enough evidence to overturn the decision on the field the knee was down but it's not going to be where the ball is placed where the knee is it's actually as the as he's falling forward and he it's where the ball is yeah yeah it's where the ball is and it's going to be right on the goal line which will the end result is going to be a touchdown and again it certainly didn't hurt underwood that two fresno state guys ran into each other trying to cover him there on that underneath throw but underwood had seven touchdowns a year ago he was a high school quarterback and brexiano said that underwood really had to work on his pass catching when he got to rutgers and actually a few years ago we saw him as a true freshman line up under center at times he's a tremendous athlete a guy that has got great speed good leaping ability and he's improved every year he's been at rutgers let's watch where the ball is when the knee hits the knees right there and the ball he's stretching for the goal line i don't think you can overturn this one [Applause] it's going to be after review the fire was short the ball will be placed on the four race left yeah they're going to say that he did not get in it's got to be indisputable video evidence to overturn the ruling on the field and they must have felt this they felt like they had it but i don't see how you could have it when you know the the knee goes down and you're trying to figure out where the ball is going to come down look at the forearm the left forearm is down as well and that's that's the issue the knee and the left forearm are down and the ball's not in as long as it was something other than the hand the forearm was down as well and so it looks like they got it right well we know who who's won these battles when they get down in short yardage and goal line type situations it's been fresno state all day long here's young he's not going to get in [Applause] right on cue andre fresno state again coming up big right on the goal line it'll bring up second down and goal well they miss r squared right now ray rice yeah in this situation a guy that's low center of gravity powerful runner he's great in uh goal line in short yardage situations you know cordell young you're asking him to do a lot he's only five nine 185 pounds this is bringing mason robinson he's on he only weighs 195 pounds more than young here's young and this time he'll get in touchdown rutgers poor del young who only carried it 18 times a year ago after tearing his acl in the third game gets the touchdown greg schiano going back to the rutgers locker room don't know what that's about but a touchdown for young and us osan santee who already missed what what about two essentially an extra point on a 22-yard field goal try see if he could do something to get his confidence going there you go son t knocks it through and it's ten to seven fresno state ortel young from one yard out gets rutgers on the board for the first time today coach yano taking a little break hope he's okay back in the moment 10-7 fresno state [Music] greg schiano going back to the locker room right as cordell young crosses the goal line he wasn't there for long 56 seconds later we timed this believe it or not out comes coach you know that little thing i told you about how water gets to the second floor [Laughter] a little pressure 10-7 after the touchdown and the extra point that's one thing xiaomi missed he missed his freshman kicker make a p-a-t he's been looking for something like that all day maybe he should stay back there with his kicker kicks from now on aj jefferson on the return tripped up out to the 24-yard line since nt missed a 22-yard field goal and was way off the mark on a longer attempt and then finally gets an extra point as coach doesn't even see it rutgers has run 23 plays more than fresno state in this in this game but yet they still trail 10-7 in this ball game that's a lot of offense time of possession but they came out both teams now look look like two different teams here in the second half rutgers stadium sold out every home game for the second straight year scarlet knights trying to win their opener fresno state trying to get one 3000 miles away from home grand stater's throw is on the money going down to get it is azir ajara tutu after a gain of six devin mccourty made the tackle we are a long way from the valley that's what the v stands for in the back of the fresno state helmets a 3 000 mile trip they'll head back tonight with a stop in wichita to gas up head head home and they'll be playing wisconsin not at their place in two weeks that'll be fun to watch especially if fresno state wins here ucla on the schedule and then conference play but they're 1-6 under pat hill against boise state so keep that in mind as miller burst through a wide open gap breaks a couple tackles and eventually pulled down in rutgers territory at the 47. that'll quiet the crowd and in it kind of uh kind of you want to go down if you're the offense and you just had points put on you now you want to go down and match points with points look at that block by kenny avon the right tackle just kind of takes his man takes him clear out of the picture and allowing for miller to really hit it on the run didn't have to stop didn't have to chop his footwork down nothing just hits it in full stride great kickout block two by bear pasco and the linebacker manny of brew and ain't it 23 and it's first down at the 46 yard line a little play action france stater being chase throws back across his body and it's incomplete intended for isaac kinter so it'll bring up second down in 10. kenter almost made a nice grab for bran stater who's actually got something going on in the pass game he looks like he's throwing with a lot more confidence here in the second half well you mentioned that fresno state is wisconsin on the 13th and goes to ucla on september 27th that game against wisconsin's on espn2 and the game against ucla on abc and remember they have never won an outright whack title under pat hill they only tied for the conference title once and if you don't win your conference even if you win the rest of your games out of confidence you're not going to a bcs he couldn't have said it better pat hill he just said hey we just we didn't we hadn't been as good as boys of state in hawaii in the last couple years ryan matthews again a huge hole down the middle of the field and matthews is inside the 20. devon mccourty on the tackle and ricciano trying to keep his defense energized they've been on the field a lot here tonight they've done a good job but fresno state moving the ball now you mentioned the first uh the the schedule for fresno state as they come back they'll uh they'll be at home against wisconsin but don't uh skip over my man with the whistle there thomas yeah at toledo that won't be an easy trip for fresno state either first down from the 19 in rutgers territory matthews stood up as rutgers got good penetration pete tavertoff who's really been good tonight makes another play no gain there for ryan matthews he's got great push up front by the offensive line here in the second half for fresno state to verdot on that play he's uh he's able to keep his pad level down get some good penetration and disrupt things actually back in the backfield when uh when the handoff was given but he's had himself one heck of a football game laying it on the line that senior leadership you cannot put a gauge on that he's got five tackles one for a loss also a sack and a batted pass second down in ten play action bran stater has bear pasco he'll come up short of the first down marker as jason mccourty tackles him and now a penalty flag flies in yeah so a late hit by marlon moore of fresno state we'll see if he gets penalized he was the one that shoved the rutgers player to the ground we'll see if that was a in retaliation dead ball personal foul on the offense number five 15-yard penalty how do you do that remain second and if you're marlon moore how do you commit that kind of a penalty just kind of letting your emotions uh get away from you right there the play's over actually helmet in the back and he's catches manny abreu right in the back receiver he's he's been popped a time or two in this game that we didn't see and he's trying to get him get one uh get one back on uh abreu that's not the right time nope now you're back out of the 22-yard line and remember it's third down that was a dead ball foul so it is third down makes that field goal attempt a little bit longer for gasoline it would be about a 45-yarder from here gessling had never kicked in a college game before today and he did make a 31-yard attempt third down and 18 for fresno state running play flag down that's got to be a false start it's a dead ball foul they handed it off but there was movement before line offensive line moved prior to the snap false start on the offense number 73 five yard penalty kill third down now it's getting even longer by the snap third and 23. i mean would you want to run that ball there that's what they were planning on doing do you run it here now i think he's actually at that point you know there aren't a whole lot of uh plays in that playbook to convert third and 18 and it's just kind of means that you've uh you've messed up first and second down and then the penalty to go along with it to get you uh where you are right now this this is tough it'd be about a 50 yard attempt from here fifth penalty on fresno state branstader gonna go down field man there what a catch inside the five by ajarra tutu down at the two-yard line [Applause] tutu has great leaping ability he's six three and a big receiver at 210 pounds junior out of el dorado hills california but he gets a nice outside release with nothing on him jason mccourty you've got to at least get a bump on him and he gets to the safety jayer kitchen and nobody touches him he's got a free release he runs by the corner he gets behind the safety and he gets to the safety so fast because there was no hand he didn't get any hands or any push on him at the line of scrimmage in two deep coverage by the corner they are reviewing that to see whether azera tutu caught it that's a 31-yard pickup on third down and 23. did ajarra tutu catch it and was he inbound those are the two questions we'll try to answer here let's look it's a nice job of concentrating i think that that is a catch right there and we're going to move the chains and they're going to be set up first in gold to go inside the 5 yard line but that's a nice job of concentrating i can't believe that the corner to that side of senior corn and jason mccourty does not get any hands on a receiver to slow him down and if you get a fast receiver out there with that kind of size he's going to eat up ground and get to the safety and he's so far inside there's no way to make a play over the top as a safety and two deep coverage and you know that just kills greg schiano he got him third down in 23. they just committed a couple stanzas ruled first down they just committed a silly penalty yeah and then they have a false start it's third down and 23. you got them backed up they're not going to be able to make a field goal from there and you give up that 31-yard pass play and now it's first down and goal at the one that will drive a defensive minded head coach crazy as well as a defensive coordinator when your team gets to third down and long or third in anything and you cannot get yourself off the field they stack them behind bran stater on first down and goal the deep man is ryan matthews matthews gets it up over the top didn't get in ryan d imperio made the play from his middle linebacker spot it'll bring up second and goal a good job there by by rutgers so many times we talked about fresno state in the short yardage and goal line situation that uh you know we got to credit rutgers as well second and goal at the one if rutgers can hold fresno state to a field goal it would remain a one-possession game not gonna happen touchdown fresno state ryan matthews but there is a penalty flag down at the two anthony harding with the block for ryan matthews but again a penalty marker at the line of scrimmage the play the penalty is declined touchdown is good ryan matthews second touchdown today he had 14 a year ago as a freshman and fresno state leads by nine he's ahead of schedule ahead of last year's base how about the job by fresno state's offense after rutgers gets momentum back good drive by the knights and the bulldogs come right back down and score extra point by gessling is good and it's a 10-point lead you've got to go down and match points with points they took a drive rutgers went down and got themselves some points fresno state comes back 17-7 fresno state espn's college football is presented by cars.com where confidence comes standard and in part by gillette visit gillettegameface.com for a chance to win huge prizes all season long [Music] that's the johnson hall on campus named after the family of johnson and johnson which is headquartered nearby in new brunswick nine play 77 yard drive with three plays of 20 yards or more including a 31-yard pass play on third down and 23 that set up the touchdown run by ryan matthews 10 point game 6 46 remaining underwood waiting for the gasoline kick at the eight-yard line [Applause] and underwood running the wrong way backwards tackled at the 17-yard line by chris carter well let's go back and take a look at this long pass to azeroth tutu right here you've got you've got the uh cornerback to the outside jason mccourty who's got to get a hand on azshara tutor otherwise he's going to eat up the cushion there's no flat threat out here so now basically it becomes man-to-man which really you got to scratch your head and question why doesn't he get some type of bump off the line of scrimmage with a fast wide receiver that can heat up the cushion between receiver and safety there's no angle with a fast guy like that the safety is out of the picture if it's thrown on time which it was from bran stater nice pass but i'm questioning why don't you get any hands on the receiver remember he also had a 77-yard catch earlier in the game and fresno state still physical on defense underwood tattooed by moses harris and damien owens minimal game there but azshara tutu has been the big play receiver tom bradstay to remember that uh earlier in the contest yeah on first and ten for the 20 through that deep pass to set up another touchdown that pass under thrown by teal knocked away by sean plummer and it's third down and not well right now they've got all the answers for fresno state and you talk about living in long yarded situations mike teal you better find a way to get the football to the playmakers kenny britton taekwon underwood otherwise this one and the clock's gonna run out in a hurry although you find yourself in another punting situation deep down on your own into the field third down and nine four wide receivers out there rutgers just 33 on third down today teal has underwood but right through his hands incomplete and rutgers will be forced to punt that would have been a 15-yard gain at least and a first down instead rutgers gonna have to kick it away sometimes quarterbacks when they've got guys wide open that's the toughest throw in the world to make and for a receiver when you're that wide open nobody around you that's the toughest catch to make because you're looking to put it away and start running you start running before you actually have the football and the result is the ball's on the ground there's no state their second charge timeout fresno state calls a timeout college football action kicks off on espn saturday night in the sunshine state it's miami and florida college football prime time presented by hampton hotels on espn saturday at eight eastern time florida coming off a great year tim tebow of course winning the heisman trophy many think miami will be better after a very disappointing season hurricanes do have some weapons back lost some people on defense like calais campbell but the acc right now it's anybody's guess well who is the best team in that league is after what happened to clemson the other night the reason why i'm thinking that game's a lot faster a lot better than people give it reason or give give the credit miami is a fast fast football team you have issued a challenge saying that you know florida's going to come in and do a b c and d i think randy shannon will have the hurricanes ready to play percy harvin expected to play for florida in that game with miami delagano to put it away marlon moore waiting for it good kick backing more up he'll field it at the 30. breaks a tackle and then steps out of bounds after a decent return at the 45-yard line well if you're rutgers right now and greg ciano you need a stop you need the football you need to create some type of turnover get disruptive defensively go after tom branstader and if he's going to drop back to pass but you know they're going to run the football they want to eat up some clock here you know andre you and i love working with aaron andrews and we love working with rob stone as well but apparently people here in new jersey weren't that thrilled about the fact that aaron was not working this game you see the headline there and nj.com dropped stone to replace aaron andrews this was big news folks here in new jersey and now stoner got egged on the way here no just kidding but uh there are a lot of people look you see some comments there as the screen rolls there on the internet people chiming in with their thoughts on rob stone ryan matthews almost broke free from courtney grain tackled after a gain of eight stoner are they treating you well down there it's all right you know i wish i could say this was an isolated incident but clearly this has been going on for too long and aaron's tired of it and frankly i'm tired of it so uh we got this letter from the office of aaron jill andrews and i'm going to read it to you guys can i read it to you now yeah yeah let's do it right now all right uh this this is from aaron jill andrews today a letter to new jersey i share your sorrow and grief that i am not with you today rob stone does a fine job of covering mls kickball and dart throwing but how he got this assignment should require a federal investigation although rob spends as much time on his hair as i do that's just a cheap shot and his reckless sideline antics amuse his family and friends very true the blogs have spoken and clearly the network has let you down at any rate i love you all and look forward to seeing new jersey again soon have fun with rob if you seem stiff and all celebrity aloof just yell ham bone and he'll probably buy everyone drinks after the game sincerely aaron p.s remember never wear white after labor day that's good stuff it's good stuff my man well we know you appreciate it when you work with spielman mcdonough maybe not as much on this crew but yeah oh boy that was that was a similar reaction to when they found out that rob stone was reporting as well as watching rutgers offensively they're yawning he just got word that aaron wasn't here no that's good stuff second down and two at the rutgers 47. [Applause] again matthew's first down into the secondary oh great balance by matthews and he's to the 36 yard line what a run by sophomore ryan matthews people are going to be talking about this kid for the next few years he's got speed size obviously balance and vision 14 touchdowns as a frosh last year and two touchdowns here today i think he kind of flew under the radar last season but uh he is right on the stage right now where he's not going to sneak up on anybody you see the totals for the day five over five yards to carry two touchdowns to go along with it he's had himself one heck of a ball game and really a heck of a second half because he came out and that's where they went with the football was to ryan ryan matthews to start third quarter still plenty of time left and rutgers can get a stop but president say it's been gashing him on the ground after not having a lot of success running the ball in the first half there's matthews again he got about three if fresno state though hangs on to win this game you know like it or not pat hill they're going to be talking about that wisconsin game as a potential you know almost like a bcs game because if fresno state wins that game their only other real challenge outside of league play is ucla yes they have to go to toledo they got ucla and abc and then they get into conference play hawaii's not going to be as good people aren't sure about boise state fresno state is the pick to win the whack tell you what they're going to have to start that wisconsin game a lot faster than they started here against rutgers because brett bielema he will have his team ready to play against fresno state no doubt about it here's lanier miller wrapped up at the 30. kevin mallis down the stop after a gain of three talk about the road to the bcs for fresno state it'll move to fresno to take on wisconsin that's of course if they win today and then at ucla on the 27th and then boise state on the road to close the regular season and pat hill is one and six against boise state i think all pat hill cares about right now is 1-0 and they're 3-57 away from winning their opening backing them up so much anticipation for the season opener here at rutgers but a disappointing labor day for scarlet knight fans well the youngsters he's making a team switch already he's already got got the texas longhorn hat on not sure what tv roots for but now the defense still can make a play here it is third down in four and if rutgers can get the ball back it's only a ten point deficit this has not been a good weekend though for the big east conference now granted it's just week one as you see the rushing totals in the second half for fresno state compared to rutgers but yet syracuse losing to northwestern pittsburgh at home to bowling green and louisville at home to kentucky by an average of 18 points and here his rutgers down by 10. and every non-bcs conference had a winner this weekend that's the first time that's ever happened and the whack might get two when i say winner that means against a bcs school non-becs conference beating a bcs conference and it looks like the whack things continue this way gonna have a second one see what happens on third and four matthews got the first down and more the burst to the outside blake's tackles inside the five and finally tackled shy of the end zone by jason mccourty boy matthew's showing us something there that we didn't see all day and that's the burst of speed we saw him run with power and be physical inside but watch the watch the speed here stretching it out and now here's the gear [Music] [Applause] the impressive job of running by that young man ryan matthews just a sophomore tied for a freshman lead with 14 touchdowns a year ago he is not going to sneak up on anybody this year everybody talks about lashawn mccoy and no sean moreno is great sophomore running backs do not slight ryan matthews and what he's done so far in his young college career their final time out we're talking about how the big east has had a bad weekend but last year west virginia had a great year lost to pittsburgh cincinnati won 10 games a lot of people think south florida this year might only lose one or two games and it was a down year for louisville and you know pittsburgh go with that big win at west virginia but uh man how do you lose to bowling green at home granted bowling green was in a bowl game last year but that's at pit you can't lose that game especially when a lot of people are picking you to win the company are you talking about eight teams and six of them bold eligible that's uh that's not bad for uh from a for a conference top to bottom they've just about had enough here at rutgers starting to hit for the heels certainly the big east as we mentioned not a good weekend the big 10 did not have a very good weekend either with michigan losing at home to utah michigan state at cal it's a tough place to play and get a win on the road when you travel cross country fresno state able to do that today if it hangs on to win illinois losing to missouri but right now the sec and we say this every year but it almost seems like the gap gets wider every year between the sec and everybody else the only team the only conference you can really throw in there uh the big 12 when you have oklahoma you've got missouri that looked good against illinois the other night and a couple of others but texas looked good in their opening game the other night but everybody else it's it is a tough there's a wider gap than even a year ago i mean some think the best team in the country is usc and that's the pac-10 but but after that you've got oregon uh how good is oregon this year arizona are they going to have a big season as well yeah schedule not as favorable for them as it was last year they got georgia at home they run matthews who's down short of the goal line by mania brew on first down and goal but this almost helps fresno state here because the clock is running and rutgers had to call the time out there where he has been dynamic in the second half of this ball game big run after big run they decided to get physical and turn the game over to ryan matthews and a nice touchdown run there then a big scamper to go along with it he's showing you the tough running he's showing you the speed there the agility i think he has the entire package dave well you look at him he's 5 11 215 we've seen the balance and the vision averaging six yards of pop today he rushed for just under 900 yards last year and he missed two games due to injury 136 on 28 carries that's getting it done rarely you know so many times they say oh the day's gone when a guy can carry the ball 25 30 times i think he's dispelling that and he's wearing a retired jersey dale messer wore 21 and that number was retired at fresno state but letting ryan matthews wear it they've got some other good young players they've got ibon feathers who is a highly recruited quarterback who's on the roster but david carr's brother derek has verbally committed to attend fresno state second down and goal at the one they'll give it to matthews again matthew's with his third touchdown for fresno state speed to get to the edge and it is dead silent in this stadium ricciano is going to have to pick his team up he'll have an off week before getting right back to business but you know you'll see a lot of improvement from the first game to the second one coaches talk about that all the time he'll have an extra week to get these guys ready they'll know exactly where they came up short in this one first game in the post ray rice era and only seven points to show ford they were inside the tent a couple times went forward on fourth down in the first quarter did not get it and then a missed field goal and right now they trail by 17. let's check in with rob stone down on the field guys fresno state getting fired up for the wisconsin game 12 days away they're already getting these t-shirts out that they're going to sell real california football a reference to what is it what's the cheese slogan slogo real cheese or something like that yeah the state of california actually produces more cheese and dairy products than the state of wisconsin so a little smack talk from the valley against wisconsin there the first time a big ten team has traveled to fresno impressive good job by wisconsin guys i think too for accepting that game a lot of big ten programs would not go to the valley oh you're right and we saw pj hill yesterday have a good game for wisconsin beating akron in madison and that game fresno state wisconsin will be on espn2 be a late game look forward to watching that one boy in the 13th there's some good games on the family usc ohio state fresno state wisconsin it's going to be a good one a lot of people think utah after beating michigan and byu or two bcs bus uh potentials certainly got to put fresno state in the mix but a long way to go it's one game and uh you know you look historically at fresno state you know they have not they've lost more than one game every year they've been in the whack and you still got to take business in in your conference they hadn't won an outright mac title they've tied for it a couple of times going 92 93 and then another three times but they have not won it outright underwood past the 30 yard line up to the 35 that's where rutgers will start down 17 points gillette presents kickoff week tonight we're about 40 minutes away from college football primetime presented by jack links as part of college kickoff week presented by gillette tennessee and ucla everybody talking about florida with tebow returning georgia being number one pre-season everybody talking about alabama after thrashing clemson on abc saturday night what about tennessee how do they fit in in that league i think they just got to go out and take care of business along the way and they're going to force people to talk about them of course auburn and kentucky look good granted to louisville not expected to be a great team but still that's a that's a big win against your arch rivals on the road cordell young trying to get away from defenders wrapped up at the 49 he got 14 at a first down well this could be a a dangerous rutgers team though if you decide to go the route of where the strength is and get the football to the wide receivers cordell young is a great young back that works well in space that pass well overthrown intended for brit the big east that you want to see week two okay week one he had four teams uh lose against uh bowling green with pitt syracuse losing to northwestern you mentioned the kentucky louisville game in this one but i want to see next week you got west virginia going to east carolina we just saw east carolina beat virginia tech that's at 4 30 eastern on saturday on espn now west virginia i mean you got to have something for the big east conference you need a big win and that's not an easy place to play greenville skip holtz has got his team playing well we saw that saturday another pass that's off the mark intended for underwood but he was held either holding her interference going to be called as a couple flags fly talking about that west virginia game that's not going to be an easy one going on the road to try to take on east carolina a great one of the greatest games maybe the greatest game ever when boise state beat oklahoma in the fiesta bowl two years ago boise state was undefeated won their conference of course going into that and then hawaii of course undefeated winning their league as well the whack got trounced by georgia though in the sugar bowl last year can fresno state be the third school from the whack and three years to crash the party utah did it no four with urban meyer they don't shy away from the conversation you know they want to be it they want to be the next team to bust into the bcs and they they are just outright with t say so teal's pass too long intended for tim brown incomplete coverage by damian owens pat hill said why bury your head in the sand everybody else is talking about it we're going to talk about it as well but could you wonder have they put too much emphasis on these games remember three years ago they almost beat usc and then they melted down the stretch losing a couple key conference games including at home to louisiana tech and you know we go back to the fact that they have no outright conference titles they've only shared one in the last 10 years that was in 99 is there too much emphasis put on these games against rutgers and not enough on the ones in your comments i think they've uh they've they've got the model and they've learned from past experiences young breaking one tackle and he'll come up about five yards shy of the first down they've learned from past experiences about the let down of getting up for games like this of this magnitude and going into conference play so i think if you're a head coach you preach that to a team that look you got to be up each and every week not just when we go to rutgers not just when we play against wisconsin tip sorry andre young and intercepted by haines his second interception of the day he picked off teal in the end zone earlier in the contest on a flea flicker and that should seal the deal for fresno state we're talking about a long day where everybody involved at rutgers sideline came out it was a little slow a little sluggish had an opportunity early in the game to at least put some points up i don't know if they hold up or not but it might change the total dynamics of this football game had they gone ahead and put some points on the board early in the first half and it has just been tough going ever since four interceptions all last year for the secondary for fresno state two interceptions in this game by one guy marvin haynes and so fresno state takes over on its 36-yard line leading 24-7 i asked you at the outset of the show what was the biggest upset you said arkansas state over texas a m as ryan matthews takes off again inside the 45 who of the non-bcs conference schools has been the most impressive is it east carolina is it fresno state how about utah winning in michigan i think it you know can i have a tie can i say utah and going to michigan in the big house as well as east carolina i was very impressed with that win over virginia tech because they fought they scratched they came back it was wasn't a pretty game but they just kind of hung in there and i think they've got enough upperclassmen and enough leadership to really kind of get skip holtz where he wants to go this season so those two games i think utah going into the big house you cannot discount what they were able to accomplish and you know it's happened two times in two seasons where they've dropped their opening game so it appears to be more of the same here in 2008 bowling green winning at pitt mississippi state that one's been under the radar a little bit yes that was at louisiana tech but louisiana tech winning that game mississippi state went to a bowl game last year i think if you most coaches would agree that the farther you get away from that 85 scholarship rule once that was in place and now the talent starts to just trickle down and around the country you better be a pretty good football coach because in a span of about two three four years you're gonna there's gonna be some pretty good football players everywhere and you've gotta coach your football team now and what would you do you can't just stack up on talon and just go out and win football games just because you have the better talent now you've got to coach the coach of players and what we didn't show you there arkansas barely beating western illinois north carolina just getting by mcneese state maryland 14-7 over delaware so there were some close calls as well for some other schools i think you're right i think that the cream of the coaching uh the coaching crop will rise here in the next several years as uh there's just more competition for uh for players i think there's better players too around the country well as well you're getting a little bit better player and let's say the margin between player a and player b is just a little bit different now you go to a program and a coach can not only can he coach but he can develop talent now that play player b becomes a little bit better than player a in year two now you really got uh some struggles on your hands if uh if you're not uh coaching your talent so to speak you saw the numbers there for ryan matthews and pat hill says what i learned most from bill belichick and my time with him with the cleveland browns was belichick's ability not only to organize but to evaluate talent and how they fit with your system and obviously pat hill has done a good job coaching those players he gets and he he's gotten some good players obviously at fresno state they're probably not going to get the players that the other schools out west and the pac-10 are going to get but pat hill has done a great job with what he's had well when you start getting those players filtering down and and you can develop and recognize talent and guys that fit well into your scheme and what you want to do and you give yourself a chance and i think that's what he's done at fresno state he's given himself a chance to compete he's giving himself a chance or his program to be successful and that's why you can come on the road way across the country like they have traveled from fresno california here to piscataway new jersey and come up with a performance like this rashad jamal on the final play as the first down they'll actually have to reset the clock here and start it again but they're not going to run another play don't forget tennessee and ucla coming up next fresno state wins at rutgers first ever meeting with a big e school they travel 3 000 miles to new jersey and knock off the scarlet knights by the final score of 24-7 and so all the construction continuing here at rutgers stadium a lot of labor went into this labor day contest between rutgers and fresno state a long wait for all the scarlet knight fans but the disappointing opener as they fall 24-7 up next on espn it's college football live powered by pontiac g6 with reese mark and
