we all remember linsanity jeremy lin took the nba by storm going on one of the most historic runs in the history of the league after going undrafted he finally got his chance to prove himself and he did in a way no player ever has before at the time carmelo anthony and the knicks were terrible then jeremy lin came in and averaged 27 a game his first week put up 38 points against kobe and embarrassed the lakers hit a game winner against the raptors and led the next to a seven game win streak all while carmelo was out with an injury while sitting on the sideline 95 of players would be thrilled to see their team produce another star out of nowhere usually a superstar player already as established as carmelo anthony was would feel a weight lifted off of his shoulders to know that he now had a second star but that wasn't the case with carmelo because when he returned from his injury he made it clear that he wasn't happy with mike d'antoni running so many pick and rolls for jeremy lin and told him he needed to change it so consequently the knicks then lost six straight games and d'antoni resigned so the knicks could hire mike woodson who coached a style mello was happier with essentially taking the spotlight back from jeremy lin and letting everyone know he wasn't going to sacrifice even a little bit to let lin sanity continue and help his team with jeremy lin on the court the new york knicks had a 16 and 10 record without him 20 and 20. with jeremy lin on the court carmelo anthony averaged 15.8 points per game without him that season that number jumped up to 26.4 points per game so we see a correlation here when carmelo anthony averaged less points the team won more games but he still wouldn't budge even a little bit lynn's season ended due to injury but in the offseason the knicks said that they would pay any amount to re-sign jeremy lin then instead let him walk to the houston rockets all of this may or may not sound like a coincidence but one year later omari sadamar confirmed all the rumors that milo drove d'antoni and jeremy lin out of new york and this is the perfect example of a teammate holding back another who knows how well jeremy lin would have continued to play for new york in another season who knows how good he really could have made the knicks and how much better his career would have turned out well we'll never know thanks to melo but that's not the only case like this it or something similar actually happened quite a few times in recent memory so let's take you back to the 2009 and 10 nba season it was steph curry's first in the nba and he joined a team that had one of the nba's better scorers and monte ellis who had been leading the team the past couple of years and even though monte was averaging 25 a game and curry had 17 a night the team was still terrible and finished with a 26 and 36 record the next year wasn't any better for them either for a team that had two 6'3 guards in the backcourt essentially playing the same role as primary scorers it was no surprise that it didn't work and monte ellis had this to say about steph curry before they ever play the game together right after he was drafted can you see yourself playing with curry in the backcourt i can't answer that us together no why not can't we just can't too small too similar just can't the warriors say you can they say we can yeah if they say it but we can't you wouldn't want to give it a shot i just want to win that's not going to win that way now eventually he was right but this just has to make you believe that for the next two years maybe he didn't give it his all if he wasn't this much disbelief at the start maybe his opinion never changed and it hurt their actual chances at success he never truly bought in but as we know in 2012 the warriors would trade the fan favorite and monte ellis to the bucks which their fans really weren't happy with afterwards monte never reached the same level of success but just three years later steph would win his first mvp nba championship and the rest is history so ultimately ellis was holding him back and he would have never been the player he was today if monte had not gotten traded this isn't the only bad course something like this has happened to though because as you'll remember back in 2012 the cavs drafted kyrie irving first overall he was clearly gonna be a star in the nba well the next year they had the fourth overall pick and with hopes of lebron's return in mind one day they drafted dion waiters because they thought he'd be a good fit too well not only was he not a good fit with lebron he wasn't even a good fit with kyrie irving because the two instantly hated each other and back then dion had a huge ego we all know kyrie does too but diane's was the problem here both players were ball dominant and liked to control the offense both players wanted to be the star of the cleveland cavaliers but their styles didn't mix and the cavs tried to hide it the first overall pick in the player that was drafted to the team first should obviously have had the respect of waiters but he didn't in the two butted heads and it was clear who the cavs actually believed in because in waiter's first two years he played pretty good but kyrie irving became a two-time all-star so when lebron james returned to town it was only a matter of months before they traded away dion waiters to the oklahoma city thunder and then he slowly made his way out of the league so in this one and a lot of these other cases like this they usually involve a teammate and at least one star player that has a problem with them but not even the greatest of all time was the best teammate and it shows after a historic career michael jordan was the president of basketball operations in 2001 for the wizards and that year they had the number one overall pick so in what we've come to know as casual mj fashion he picked the biggest bust that year and one of the biggest busts ever in kwame brown but hold on there's actually some logic behind the pick there's two things you might not have realized the first is one of kwami's teammates has come out and said that in the draft that year kwame was the best player hands down and it wasn't even close he said i saw it with my own two eyes they brought in all the top big men right this is right at the verizon center he went against tyson chandler he went against eddie curry and he destroyed all of them like it wasn't even close and coming there and having the pressure of playing next to mj and really doug collins really affected him so call me brown just either had a really good day or actually seemed like a great player at the time but then why did he turn out to be a bust well it's well known that michael jordan the player that helped draft him joined the wizards as a player the next season and just verbally and mentally destroyed him with multiple people saying he was brought to tears on multiple occasions so jordan definitely held him back but wait why would he do that to a player that he just brought in to help him win well that leads us to the second thing you might not have realized which was the fact that mj never intended to keep kwami instead he actually drafted him to instantly trade him to the bowls for elton brand who was dominating at the time but the trade fell through at the last minute so you can see why he was upset having to play with a guy that he didn't want and who he thought didn't have what it took but of course that's still no excuse to ruin a man's career but speaking of nba busts darko milchich is one that always comes to mind the guy drafted before mello bosh and wade in 2003 well his career never panned out and it was pretty much doomed from the start he was supposed to be this dominant overseas prospect but he never averaged double-digit points or rebounds played for five teams in seven years and that leads us to the 2011 season when he was on the minnesota timberwolves the previous year he had made good friends with rookie nicola pekovich on the team and they got along so the next year in the 2011 season when pekovich got tired of not getting minutes he was ready to request a trade but darko said hold up and faked an injury so he could sit out and nikola pekovic could get more minutes but little did he know because pekovich played so good within that stretch that he took the starting spot even when darko returned and milk just started playing less and less minutes and got waved from the team at the end of that season which ultimately really ended his nba career at 26 years old and i mean if you don't got one go get you a friend like darko willing to make the ultimate sacrifice it was a huge mistake though and and i guess you can't even say his teammate ruined his career because he did this one to himself and i think we can all agree it was a dumb move but something a little more controversial is saying that russell westbrook held back kevin durant in oklahoma city the two were thought of as the most dominant duo in the league for a lot of years they played together for eight seasons and even with james harden only made one nba finals and without him as a duo they never made another finals appearance and by the way this is not anything to hate on russ but these guys always fail to meet expectations they didn't play as good as they were expected to kevin durant won four scoring titles and a league in vp while in okc while russ won one scoring title himself but having watched them play together for years myself the problem always was that westbrook was taking too many shots he was taking too many opportunities away from kd when kd was clearly the best player on that team by far they could deal with it in the regular season they could get by but when they were in the postseason and russell westbrook would hold on to the ball and take the last shot over kevin durant when russ would take more shots in the game than kevin who was much more efficient it was clearly a system that wasn't gonna work and it never did which played a factor in why he left the team there was clearly other problems with those in okc but i do feel like in that aspect westbrook did hold kevin durant back here then we can go back to the 2012 and 13 nba season to remember when dwight howard joined the los angeles lakers disappointing attempt at a super team one could look at this as kobe and steve nash held back dwight howard because they were too hard on him didn't allow him to be himself and made him uncomfortable never allowing him to play like he was supposed to one could say that his disastrous season and the pressure he may have had to return from his back injury early caused the real beginning of the end to his nba career these things could be said about dwight howard but really like most people i placed the blame on him in this situation now there was obviously nothing that he could have done about steve nash being injured most of that one year he played there and kobe rupturing his achilles right before the playoffs causing them to get swept by the spurs in the first round but you could definitely say dwight was the biggest thing that held this team back in the regular season he didn't play like he was supposed to his drive wasn't there and that was really what started the internal destruction of this team and because of it the rest of the lakers roster all eventually went their separate ways so what we've learned today is even your teammates who you trust the most can be your biggest enemies more than any opponent out there so watch your back
