[Music] we are hoping to either plaster later today or tomorrow once we get some more sand we realize we also need some mason sand some finer sand along with our playground stand that we have mixed up into our natural hydraulic line okay we got it running thanks to our friend johnny we are using a mortar mix to mix up our lime today tonight [Music] [Music] we got some water we're gonna see if we can turn it on if and everything still works fine and we're gonna use this water to help spray down our bail walls and then use it to mix our mortar okay ready ready here we go riley i should say bought stuff to make an attachment so we can fit a hose up to it [Music] i hate it [Music] we got all our outlets taped and we have the paper down [Music] we want to start we want to spray our bails get them nice and wet not too wet but enough for them [Music] so we saved all this from when we we'd wrapped our walls just kind of finer pieces of straw we need to add straw into our plaster for like a fiber reminder i'm gonna weed whack it down a little bit more this is kind of tight i don't know how well it's gonna work and we're off to town to go get some sand and hopefully we can make it back just fixing up some plaster 56 degrees out november 28th we're pretty fortunate to have such beautiful weather time to start mixing up our cluster [Music] so our rachel's going to be one part lime one part made some sand and one part playground sand [Music] so three bucket sand one and a half buckets of lime which is one bag in this video we are plastering our interior garage walls over the course of two days we went with natural hydraulic lime and the company recommended nhl5 for everything so what we are working with is not as flexible as lime that would be used in the cell i realized some people would argue against using five at all but i didn't know any of this until we had all of our plaster so we have to make the best with what we have and hope that it will work out for us our ratio for the scratch coat was one part lime to two part sand which was half mason sand and half regular sand plus fiber in the form of straw mulch then we added water as needed for our project we need a little more water to be sure we get plaster pushed into the straw bale the important part is to have full contact to your wall after mixing for 30 minutes we let it sit for another 30 minutes and then gave it another quick mix before we began applying it to the walls and of course the straw bale walls need to be fully saturated with water before any plaster goes on this is to help prevent cracking as the veils will suck the water out of the plaster leaving the plastic to dry too rapidly and it also helps to create a suction for the plaster to stick to the walls if the walls weren't wet the plaster would just fall right off gonna let this sit for a good 20 30 minutes we're gonna go work on wire meshing in the house [Music] oh the camera was like of course [Music] we're getting messy [Music] now we know who's the professional plaster [Music] my father decided to join us and give us a hand it didn't take long to get the hang of it and to learn how each of us have our own techniques on how best to apply the plaster all in all the day went pretty well and it took us three hours of plastering for the first 24 foot wall however keep in mind there's a lot of prep work that needs to be done before getting started and also a lot of cleaning up afterwards which ends up taking up the entire day i got time it's clear to see from up here [Music] the world seems small [Music] we consider together [Music] it's so beautiful you and me [Music] we meant to be [Music] in the great outdoors [Music] forever [Music] sometimes you need to go so with us having to take out our header up there now our door is hitting up on our straw and wire so they are trying to see if they can raise that up just even a little bit [Music] [Music] we'll have to do that every door [Music] great outdoors forever free you and me meant to be in the great outdoors forever free [Music] [Music] the next morning we got an early start and we're hoping to finish up within a two to three hour time period but that didn't happen we had quite a bit of difficulty working above the windows and door we couldn't get the plaster to adhere to the veils riley was working above the door while i was attempting this window we were unsure if this was going to even work at all so we had asked and received some useful tips from andrew morrison that we will be using the next time we plaster on our straw bale walls less sand in the area and the technique of how to apply the plaster which is traveling side to side with just a little bit of plaster at a time is key hopefully this will make for an easier try next time this side of the garage ended up taking us five hours to finish due to the upper winter door being so time-consuming we were hesitant on how difficult the whole process might be and tedious but we got it done and it feels so good to have accomplished a small part of plastering we have many many more hours of plastering ahead of us but we now feel more confident that we can get this done [Music] okay getting it [Music] oh [Music] [Music] she's waiting for love to be realized [Music] do [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] love [Music] so we plastered about seven days ago a week ago and it is pretty much all dry you can see there's a little wet spot up there everything seems to be looking really good it's very hard this is nhl5 and even up here we had a lot of trouble trying to get above our windows up here you can see the sagging a little bit there andrew morrison who built straw bale houses he kind of helped us give us some tips and info on how to do that so we'll be making sure next coat next plastic jabs to do that one of the tips is to use a little less sand for these areas overall i'm pretty happy with how well it did turn out so we have two more coats one more of these and then our final coat is going to be more of a white color you
