The remaining ten drivers all separated by 54 points, only six of those ten will advance to the round of eight. Hello everyone alongside Steve Letarte, Jeff Burton, I'm Rick Allen. >> You watch this race, imagine being Joey Logano, Austin Dillon in the middle of this pack having good position and then you get in a wreck. What does he do? He did nothing wrong. His day ended. Those are the thing these drivers fear. >> The wrecks aren't just at the front pack they can be at the back. Kyle Busch had a 26-point advantage over the cut line, comes in today with a 27-point advantage and this accident, Rick, he loses 33 points. Kenseth, Kyle Busch today while they have an advantage they are not safe. . >> That's not all. This race is nerve over until it's over. So right here Kasey kahne was in a position where he had to get a good finish. Four cars on the outside. One, two, three, four. He's coming to the start-finish line to get the checkered. He does not get him. Four cars get by him. His championship day is over. >> That's just how close this is. We have drivers that are fighting for points. Two drivers don't have to worry about it they will advance. 40 cars are in this race. 40 drivers all wanting to get to victory lane at talladega and anyone can win. Let's go trackside for pre-race ceremonies. >> Ladies and gentlemen at this time we ask that you please rise and remove your hats as the Alabama National Guard presents our nation's colors. For more story lines let's go trackside to Kelly. >> Kurt Busch is one of the northwesnalytical drivers. He has to finish 16th or better to guarantee his spot into the round of eight. He starts seventh today. >> The number chase Elliott is focusing on is number one. Needs to win today to advance toround the of eight. He's had spectacular performance in round of 12. Today he's counting on his teammates to push him to victory and therefore to the round of eight. >> Austin Dillon has never won in the sprunt cup series. Dale Earnhardt took the 3 to victory lane here a record of ten times. That's the kind of good fortune Dillon needs here today. Only a win will guarantee him to the next round. >> Martin Truex with two wins in this round, no top tens. And age old adage at talladega do you right in the front or right in the back. Truex told me we have track position I want to keep it. Timing of the engines are cranked at talladega for the cut race. >> And now for the most famous words in motorsports, please welcome your grand Marshall four time talladega winner and lead earthbound of the talladega gang, Bobby Alison. >> It's beam. Crank them engines. >>> Only two drivers entering this race are safe. As far as the chase drivers are concerned. Everyone else fighting for positions on the track. And the possibility of the most points the. So that they can advance to the round of eight. First there's sharp blades. Then shielding lubrication. And cooling. Brrr. With lubrication before and after the blades. Shields and cools while you shave. Proshield Chill from Gillette. Rollin' down the highway Burnin' through the fog If you see me at the crossroads You can hear me wail and moan But if you hear that fiddle And he's swingin that sickle Then don't look twice cause I'm gone Not just anyone could be a racecar driver like Casey Mears, but anyone could save money on car insurance with Geico. Geico, see how much you could save. [Groaning] Quit wiggling around! I got just the thing! A kfc twenty dollar fill up, now with extra crispy tenders. Feeling better, son? Yeah! Well now hold on! Don't run and chew! It's finger lickin' good. . >>> NASCAR on NBC sn is brought to you by -- >>> Let's take a closer look at talladega super speedway with today's GE track fact. Big, fast and unpredictable, the biggest track that NASCAR runs on, 2.66 miles. When I say fast, the average speed, a track record average speed over 188 miles per hour. The average speed. How about the qualifying record by bill Elliott, 212 miles an hour before restricter pilates came into place and ten first time winners only cup win for six drivers. That's how unpredictable this racetrack is. Want to take a look at the starting grid as the cars are about to roll out on to the track. Up front martin Truex Jr., Brad keselowski. Truex 36-year-old his first talladega pole. >> Row two two drivers trying to make their round in eight. Matt Kenseth needs to protect his spot, chase Elliott needs to win this race. >> In row three, two roush-fenway teammates. Ricky stenhouse and Greg Biffle. >> Back in row four, Kurt Busch and Denny Hamlin. Kurt Busch one of the chasers has never won a plate race in 62 tries. He wants to change that today. >> In five Austin Dillon career best finish. Starts next to Paul Menard. >> Row six, Trevor Bayne, 2011 daytona 500 winner starting next to reed Sorenson. >> Row seven, Carl Edwards and Kyle Busch. >> Row eight, Ryan Blaney and Joey Logano. >> Row nine, Jimmie Johnson and Ryan reed. >> Row 10, Alex bowman and Ryan Newman. >> Row 11 Tony Stewart and Kevin Harvick. >> Row 12 Jamie Mcmurray, and Kyle Larson. >> In row 13, Brian Scott, and Aric almirola. >> In row 14, Kasey kahne and Casey Mears. >> In row 15, Regan Smith and Danica Patrick. >> Row 16, Landon cassill, and MARIA menounos. >> Row 17, Chris Buescher, Michael Mcdowell. >> Row 18, Matt Dibenedetto. >> Row 19, Michael Annett and Bobby Labonte. >>> Let's go back to trackside and find out where Marty snider has got to. >> I found Dale Earnhardt Jr. Who has been here before. What is it like behind the wheel knowing you're close to a cut off line situation like this at a race at talladega. >> Some guys out there like chase that can let it all hang out. He can race hard and go to the front and win trees. Try to lead every lap. A lot of guys are on that borderline. They need to take care of their cars and stay out of trouble that won't be as risky as they might be. You'll see a little bit of everything. It will be an exciting race. >> Secondly, a cool paint on the 88. >> Chemo paint scheme. They have a new campaign challenging fans to answer the "Call of the wild". We're excited about that. True camo company. We got a commercial, talking deer on the wall. We did that in my home town. A lot of fun. Messed around with folks all day long. >> How did you come up with that concept to be a talking deer. That was a good one. >> Great marketing team with mountain dew came up with that. Fans have a chance to get away or other prizes. Go to mountaindew.com/takeitoutside. >> Excited to get in the booth today? >> I am. I'm looking forward to getting up there and hanging out with Steve. I have to go to booth. >> B.B. Says he wants some cookies. Burton would like steak. Rick doesn't care. They all want some mountain dew. >> I can get all that. I don't know about the cookies. I'll bring the mountain dew. >> Junior is on his way up shortly. >> You can forget the cookies I just want his opinion. I want to see what makes him so great at this racetrack. He can explain it to us. Never won here. I won with Jeff Gordon. Maybe he'll tell me some of the secrets. >> Drivers will rewind this race. >> So much pressure for 12 drivers. Actually ten now because two already have wins. The pressure has ramped up. You come to talladega you never know what's going to happen, what position you're in. And where you'll finish. That's all coming up next. Without the right tools, a five minute job can turn into a five hour job. So when it comes to your tools, choose wisely, Grasshopper. Case in point: Ford Transit. With three roof heights, and three body lengths to choose from, Transit has the most configurations of any full-size van. So, it's the right tool, no matter what your job is. This is Ford Transit. During Ford Commercial Van Season, get $3000 Customer Cash, plus an additional $500 Commercial Cash, and up to $1000 in upfit assistance. >> This place can chew you up and spit you out in a hurry. Win and you advance. If you're not locked in going into talladega close your eyes and pray. >> Good chance of getting knocked out here from circumstance and weird things happening. >> I want to race my guts out. I want to go for wins. I don't want a points race. I don't care what format is. >> Whatever the format is you have to go as hard asyou possibly can. We'll ride along with a few different drivers. >> Kevin Harvick will be found ride with Harvick. He's starting in 22nd. He's right in the middle of the pack. Right near him is Alex bowman. >> Little different view for Austin Dillon up in the fifth row carrying the Coca-Cola on board. >> And Denny Hamlin has the Toyota on board he has to do some work. He has to make something happen. Be fun to see how he does that. >> Chase Elliott has a mountain dew camera. >> Another driver needing points starts on the front row, Brad keselowski with the Ford onboard, seven points below the cut line. He'll be aggressive right from the start. The other car in the front row martin Truex Jr. Carrying sprint on board has a 13-point advantage. Be interesting how Truex and keselowski choose to race one below, one above the cut line. >> Gorgeous day here in talladega, Alabama. We'll have plenty of pictures for you. Our aerial coverage provide from our partners at smithfield foods. Two by two. Cars working their way around this 2.66 mile super speedway. Look at the race analysis, the length of this race 188 laps, 500 miles. Pit road speed, 55 miles per hour. The importance of that number is when they are coming off the track going 180, 190 miles per hour they've slow down to 55 without sliding their tires. They want to do pit strategy. 44 to 46 laps is the fuel strategy. >> Even though we've seen cars come from the back to front that fuel position will come in to play. >> This is the amazing thing as we watch these cars work their way through the turns, the banking in the corners. 33 degrees. It is so difficult even if on your hands and knees you can climb up the banking but extremely difficult. Front stretch and back stretch 4300 and 4,000 feet. Impressive facility. The cars can go wide-open as fast as they could go and now we have seen already speeds upwards of 200 miles per hour in the pack. They will fly around this track. >> Already see a little bit of strategy. Matt Kenseth qualified in the third position. You see he's pulled to the left. He has every right to do this to go back to the field. The 19 of Carl Edwards and 18 of Kyle Busch fall back. Joe Gibbs racing showing their hand early they will ride around the back. They earned the right to do this with races in Charlotte and Kansas. >> People can question the strategy. They want to see them racing in the front. The goal is to win the championship. They have to do what puts them in a shot. They can watch and wait for something to happen. If nothing happens they may be forced to charge to the front and see if they can get the spots they need. >> Strategy already playing out. Before the green flag flies and before they are in these starting positions that's where the points are. Matt Kenseth at 29-point advantage. Kyle Busch 27-point advantage. They have decided to go to the back to start this race. >> The front row, you have two very aggressive drivers that to keep that track position. I expect to see the front row racing as soon as the green flag drops to keep that track position. >> Johnny Alison two-time taught winner, he and his brother Bobby Alison making up part of the Alabama gang, crowd on their feet. Two by two, 40 cars deep. As they come through the tri-oval getting ready for the start of the elimination race at talladega super speedway. Pressure has not been higher. Green flag in the air! >> For the first time been in a pack like this. The prau get on Friday you get a pack of maybe 12 cars at the most. This is the first time they are on the wrt this many cars. >> Look how they spread out. Already three distinct lines have formed. >> Brad keselowski showed us that side draft. He pulled down the quarter panel of the 7. Pulled the 78 back. Tried to clear him off of turn four. >> Back into the tri-oval. Two and three wide already. Keselowski starting to move back and forth to block. Get in front of whichever line is moving. This may be the busiest day in a spotter's life when he's trying to let the drivers know where the runs are and where the cars are. >> An aggressive move by Denny Hamlin to go from the mid told the bottom. He's the third car back on the bottom line. Very interesting as you see the 11 right here in front of the 3 what's interesting about the 111 his teammate chose to ride in the back. Daniel Hemric below the cut line by six points he has to race. He's racing without any teammates. >> What does this middle line do? Right now, see the middle line work. Sometimes it's dies. Immediately we have that wrong line in the middle. >> They are three wide once again through the tri-oval and to the start-finish line. Unique about this racetrack the start-finish line about a quarter of a mile past the center of the apex of the tri-oval. >> Watch Brad keselowski when we had three lines now we have three lines to block. He's look in the mirror. Paying complete attention. Spotter telling him to run coming from the back on the outside in the middle. He's blocking all three lanes at the moment. If he sees momentum coming from a lane watch right here. Truex a little bit of momentum. 2 car pulls in to slow down that momentum. Keselowski driving big time. >> This is the most difficult part. When you have to block three lanes -- that's 40, 50, 60 feet from the bottom to the top of the racetrack. Brad is making it took easy. Not a lot of energy but slower runs. 78 is starting to get energy. >> I want to listen in to spotter's communication. Let's start with the 2 team. >> Three rows deep. Denny is ahead by two out. Denny will get the energy behind. Truex one back. Then stenhouse. Now two lines. Truex ahead by two. Bottom lane. Truex and chaser two wide, chase one back. Two wide for two rows and ahead by one. Bottom line is five rows back. Truex ahead by two. The first three rows. Truex, he got pushed out. Chase got pushed out. Three wide behind him. Chase has stenhouse behind. Truex. Those guys are two wide, three wide behind. >> So what you're listening to, you're listening to his spotter. He's telling him where the energy is coming from. Which line you need protect. When you listen to the spotter say Truex ahead by two that means he's ahead of the 11 car business two. The reason why that's important if somebody is on his rear bumper the 2 needs to know that. If the 11 is behind the 78 energy is coming from that. If they are separated energy is not coming. That's why information ahead by two, that means no energy from that line. >> Marty. >> Rick, I can tell you it's amazing hearing Joey on the radio. That's when they talk about traffic. Brad keselowski out front right now. The thing for the 2 team this week is oversell underdeliver. Last week Brad keys said it would be a lay up weekend and turned out to be a problem weekend. They come in below the cut line. They are thinking we need to deliver. I asked Brad keselowski about that fwraefs. He said listen I won here four times. I never had a car this good at talladega. That's what I expect today. >> You mentioned the pressure on the chase drivers. How about a little added pressure for Brad keselowski. He has won the last two restrictor-plate races. He's going for three in a row. Out in front and doing everything he has to do, the last person to win three straight restrictor plate races and the only one who has done that, Dale Earnhardt Sr.. Some pretty impressive company he can join. >> Brad keselowski is doing a phenomenal job. It's more than just a driver and crew chief. We talk about the drivers and spotters a lot but you have to have a great car to drive. Brad keselowski showing the strength of that 2 early. >> Three wide at talladega on elimination race. Find out more at NBC did sports.com/life. Alex bowman near front, three wide at talladega running about 200 miles per hour in this pack. Brad keselowski still out front for more updates we go Marty. >> We that have guys in the back the Joe Gibbs racing guys. I talked to the crew chief. He said we have to think big picture not stop of picture of today. Three Gibbs cars in the back there and their concern is they feel there has to be five cars, five quality cars in that pack. Interesting thing is going to be what happens when we get to pit stops. They are not too far back from the pack but keeping an eye on it in the Joe Gibbs racing camp. >> Carl Edwards and Dave Rogers his crew chief paying close attention to that. I spoke to Rogers this morning. He was having a lengthy debrief. They spoke for 20 minutes about strategy. The strategy had been as you can see to fall to the back of the field. This is what they said on the radio moments ago. >> I think it's okay. >> Copy that. We were just talking about that. Be careful not to lose it. >> And they are paying very close attention to the gap between themselves and the rest of the field. I'm curious, Carl Edwards third in that draft is he in a more precarious position than the other two? >> Right now martin Truex Jr. Has taken the lead away from keselowski. Keselowski not able to get down in front of him. Martin Truex Jr. Inside line starting to move. >> The 19ing the third Gibbs car is the most susceptible. If they lose the pack, teen back of it, he'll be one man on his own. One car can't keep up. >> What happens a lot of times this front pack change if it gets double filed it's much easier to lose the draft because there's less air to run into. If you do not have a good pit stop and riding in the back you can find yourself running by yourself. There's some danger riding around in the back. >> One guy who needs a great finish at this racetrack is the 3 of Austin Dillon. >> Very true. He's been up at the front of the pack. One interesting conversation I had with his spotter was coming to pit road. There's times when they may not change tires. Take fuel only and change only one side or the other. It's up to the spotter to know if Austin Dillon locks his tires up coming to pit road and makes it a required four tire spot. >> What a great shot. That camera on the right side. It's pitted up from the dirt and stuff. Look at this shot. 193 miles per hour just inches off the asphalt. See the white line go by. That shows how fast these cars are running. >> That's right on the low part of the bumper of the 3 of Austin Dillon. Once again the 2 of Brad keselowski almost like Peter piper out in front having everyone follow behind him. >> I think there's an advantage a distinct advantage. Not only with Brad keselowski show everyone how fast his car s-but learning what it's like lead. Imagine the close lap. Now he has experience being defensive on both lines and understanding when he can block and when he has to give up the run. >> He did lose the lead and found his way back into it with heavy side drafting. This is what we expected. We expected at the drop of the green flag to be protective whoever got the lead from the front row, whichever it was, martin Truex or Brad keselowski. >> 78 LED a lap. A bonus point for the 78. >> That's an age old debate. Do you run in the front or back. Marty Truex said we started with track position I want to keep it all day long. To your point Truex told me listen I learned more about my car when I'm out front. I learn about the energy of the pack. Whose good and whose not. When I ride in the back I don't learn enough about my race car to put myself in a position. >> Chase points on the left side of your screen. They continue to change. Look how close it is. Right now I can see why Carl Edwards would be frightened by running in the back of this pack. He's currently out of the top eight. He might not advance to the round of eight if they continue to run the way they do now. The 18 of Kyle Busch coming in with a pretty good cushion he's also below the cut line. Joe Gibbs racing, this strategy could come back to bite them. They got to be cautious. Right now still that three car back, almost 200, 300 yards behind the rest of this field. They've dropped back quite a bit. >> We heard the fear running in the middle of the pack. That's where Austin Dillon is. He needs a good day to transfer if into the top eight. He's decided he'll get himself in the front. He's exactly where you don't want to be. If a wreck happens in the middle is where you don't don't. It's easy to get run over from behind. Easy to not miss a wreck in front of you. >> What does he do? I like the idea of trying to go to the front. He's tied with Logano. He needs aggressive. >> Different strategies all over this field. >>> NASCAR coverage when you're on the go with NASCAR mobile. Official app that puts NASCAR at your fingertips. Download now at nascar.com/mobile. Welcome back to the Hellmann's 500. Brad keselowski. Three wins in the last eight restrictor-plate races. Save 50s on Verizon or T-Mobile rates. Let's go trackside for updates. >> As you can see napa Chevrolet of chase Elliott trying to chase down Brad keselowski. Elliott has had a frustrating round of 12. Two spectacular performances in terms of speed and laps LED however the result both outside the 2307. Extremely frustrating for this team but his crew chief told me this morning hey we're not giving up. We still have one more shot. Only thing we're thinking about today is winning. We need be aggressive and get to the front, lead as many laps as possible and win today. >> Kurt Busch hasn't done anything spectacular. But he's known exactly where they've need their average finishes to advance from round to round. Before race he found it remarkably calm over the radio telling his teammate keep it chilled. We have more points going into this race than we did last year. Don't jump over the wall too soon. That's easy to do. Kurt Busch has been running up towards the front this entire race. Maybe more relaxed than watching the Chicago cubs to move on the world series. >> Halfway through a fuel run as Brad keselowski don't lead. >> We talk about different strategies running up front, running in the back. Martin Truex Jr. Likes running up front. Here's why. Look at the average running position for these winners. Brad keselowski the township two at 2.1, 4.7. Low begano 6.2. What that means these guys run up front. What that does it allows them to understand how the race is happening, where the runs come from have a better understanding of their car. >> They do understand it better. So if you have a fast race car other people want to go with you. They want to make a move with you. The other thing is once it gets three wide and four wide where your going? How do you come from the back if there's no lane to go in. When you wait around too long there's no longer a place to go. You're just stuck in having to ride that line. When you make that charge you have to do it early enough. >> That's the point. Think of these Joe Gibbs cars ridge in the back. It's a safer position, the list of things that can go wrong will come at 50 or so laps at green flag pit spots. If they are six seconds behind the pack they will lose the draft. Three wide, all three lanes are blocked. If they try to go to the front, they can't wait. They have to do it earlier, maybe halfway. When do they risk getting in the pack. >> I think their team will be forced to tell them when it's about ten to go for the pit stop. You don't close it up. You can't trust your pit crew that much. >> 25 laps into this. Let's see who is on the move brought to by tire rack. >> Normally we see drivers going to the front of the pack. Here we talk about strategies. Two different strategies. Kenseth has fallen back 34. >> He's playing a strategy. We keep talking about Kevin Harvick how he has nothing to lose or nothing to gain because he's in the round of eight. I disagree. I don't think Kevin Harvick wants to race that 2 car or 24 car in the next round. If he can win this race key control who moves into the round ever eight. He has a lot on the line. Who I do have to beat? Who do I think is the toughest competition. Kevin Harvick will play role in this race. >> Big move for chase Elliott as he goes for thread. Chase Elliott in a must-win situation. Looking for every point he can possibly get. If he leads this lap that's a bonus point. One less position that he might have to try to fight for on the track. >> Watch out. Keselowski watch him side draft. Watch him try to slow down the 24. We see how aggressive Brad has been. Let's see how aggressive he's twoilg be right now in getting that lead back. He has his teammate behind him. That shuffle has got log behind him. >> Kevin Harvick, why does he care? He would rather push the 24 through. With 24 as the leader that puts him up above the cut lane. That puts the 20, 18, 19, 11 racing around that bubble. >> The 3 of Austin Dillon being in the middle of the pack. He needs a good run. Right now he's 21 back. He's got to find a way to the front. >> He finished fifth in the may race. In this situation, chase Elliott he's got to be up front. When the checker flag flies he has to be in a must-win situation. >> 24 car doing the same as, 2 side drafting each other. That doesn't speed your car up it slows down the other cars. Two aggressive moves by drivers in the front row. >> This is a freight train rocketing down the tracks, and every now and then the cars of that freight train change positions. >> Watching that battle between Brad keselowski and chase Elliott reminds me of a conversation I had with Elliott. He had a conversation about theed a vies his father gave him. He said the biggest thing his father taught him was how to use the side draft. We saw the side draft being implemented. >> We clearly have seen the strategy from Brad keselowski, keep the car outfront all day long. That little bit of debris on the front of the grill. Not too concerned about it right now. Trying to keep that lead from chase Elliott. >> Chase Elliott out front now, chase will go on the defense. He's going to try to stay in front line that moves. >> Watch this move by the 2 car of keselowski. This is the 24 back doing, he's able to clear the 24 and get the lead back. That's side drafting. That's the way you do it. >>> What an incredible display of side drafting. Chase Elliott in front of the field at talladega. [Train horn] [Engine roaring] I did not email any, um, classified material. Really? The FBI said there were 110 classified emails that were exchanged... Hillary lied. And another lie? I respect the Second Amendment. But behind closed doors, hillary told liberal elites... The Supreme Court is wrong on the Second Amendment. Hillary will lie aboutanything to get elected. The NRA Institute forlegislative Action is responsible for the contentof this advertising. >>> NASCAR on NBC sn is brought to you by -- >>> Some of the delicacies here at talladega super speedway as they continue to fight for the lead up front. Now chase Elliott has dropped back to third and look whose running second, Ricky stenhouse Jr. Has silently made his way up to the back bumper of 2 Brad keselowski. >> We focus so much on the guy that has chase expectation. This race means as much to him as the other guys. Winning this race could change their year and get things moving positively at roush-fenway. Look for drivers like Ricky stenhouse Jr. To be exceptionally aggressive. >> Matt Kenseth, told him a moment ago, step interest. Close that gap. You see the main draft and back there are those Gibbs cars trying to catch the main draft. Just in case something happens on pit road. Smart move? You called it earlier. You said that's what the Gibbs cars have to do. >> It's become more important. The group behind them has gotten more organized. Single file in front of them. Teen front pack no longer three wide, it's two wide. That means it's that much harder to pull up. You need to make a move now. >> Have to get clean on and off pit road. We've seen issues on pit stops before. Do they take perhaps two tires and limit their risk. We saw martin Truex Jr. Come to pit road and decide to take four tires, slow, he loses the draft and loses a lap right here. That's the risk for the Gibbs strategy. They need to close that. >> The other thing this will teach them how far they can get back and pull back up. If they start to pull back up and can't get there they will get nervous quickly. They will learn right now what that threshold is. >> More on the 18. Here's Dave. >> Interesting thing, the order they are running in. Right now Kenseth then Kyle Busch and then Carl Edwards. Adam Stevens crew chief for Kyle Busch said our car is not best in that group. Kyle will not be leader whether it's early or late in this race. >>> Chase points, 19 points separating the 20 all the way back to 24. Only 19 points. That's 19 positions. There's 40 cars out there on the track. >> As you sit up here, Jeff you keep pointing out you're not sure how much help they have. The front pack is more organized. You have nerves. You're not out there. You know how easily you can lose the draft. Not something you feel and all of a sudden it's gone snoofrpry driver tries a strategy, ride in the back and have success and every driver has the strategy and got in a wreck. The biggest fear is in trying to protect and trying to play it safe. You make a mistake, you put yourself in jeopardy with a bad pit stop. That's the biggest fear. >> We heard the words get ready for a pit stop. How do you get ready? Where do you position yourself to let anyone know I'm coming to pit road. >> Put your handout the window. >> There's Ricky stenhouse Jr. Waving his left hand. >> This is always an opportunity have a wreck. We see a lot here. >> He'll have to have some friends come along with him and does. They want to make sure not slide their tires. Big slide out of the number 3 of Austin Dillon on the right side. >> He blew his right front tire. >> Looked like it was locked up from the time he came off the racetrack until he got on pit road. >> He just road to his crew, he thinks he has a flat. They have to change all four here and get Austin back out. We talked about this earlier how the spotter will help tell but the driver knows what's going on. He knew he blew a tire. >> Martin Truex Jr. Will try to take care of those tires. Sunoco fuel as well. Very happy with the handling. Lost the front pack of the lead draft. All those cars leaving pit road. >> Ricky stenhouse Jr. Hanging on to the lead. He stays out front. Here comes the second pack on to pit road. >>> Kurt Busch making sure to pit at the same time as his teammate Kevin Harvick. Little bit loose on transition from the banking of the straightaway back for no changes just four tires. >> Chase Elliott spotter, got him off the track on to pit road. Four tires and fuel as he follows the 2 car. >> Brad keselowski dictating the pace of the race. First stall on pit road. Already gone. No chassis changes. Very happy with it. Has a ton of speed. >> 24 able to stay behind him as they came out. >> Jack underneath the 22. That can be devastating for this team. >> Interesting to see where this jack ends up. Quo have a caution. Three Joe Gibbs cars have yet to pit. >> 22 needs that. That's what he want. Best case scenario. He wants that jack to come out to force a caution. >> 4 has to stay behiernd him. You can't blends on the racetrack until you come out of turn number two. Trying to get rid of the jack. Going down the back stretch at 150 miles per hour. >> We talk about pit road mistakes. That's what we're talking about. >> Once again 11 gets a speedsing penalty. Denny Hamlin too fast entering pit road. >> Talked about pit road mistakes. We see two issues here. The 11 and 22 in the first-round of pit stops. >> This is just the first-round of pit stops. 40 laps into this 188 lap race. Jack still underneath the 22. Made it all the way around the racetrack without coming undone. >> It's amazing that jack made it all the way to pit road. Try to make a chassis adjustment for Joey Logano as well. They do not do the chassis adjustment. >> Edwards on pit road taking advantage here, four tire changes, fuel for Edwards. >> Matt Kenseth coming down pit road. Clean stop for these guys. Four tires. No changes to the chassis. They gained a little bit of ground not much on that front pack for that Joe Gibbs racing group. >>> We see the 20 of Matt Kenseth. Coming out. He rode behind the pack trying to stay out of trouble. See how much ground they gave up. >> Where are his teammates that's the bigger question. >> Just a little unorganized. Three of them pitted together. The 11 pitted on his own and ended up with a speeding penalty. First time by when the pack pitted the Gibbs cars did not and they had a big gap in front of them and ran two slow laps. This is the concern, the strategy seemed fine until green flag pit stops cycled the whole field around. >> Already the ninth speeding penalty that Denny Hamlin has this year alone. The penalty for taking equipment out of your box with the 22 was served when he came back to his box when they were able to take the jack out from underneath the 22. >> That could be a reason why they didn't change the tires. They just removed the jack. >> Guys, I believe the 78 has lost an engine, martin Truex, Jr. Said the engine blew up down the straightaway. He definitely left pit road last time. Smoke in the cabin. Had a very bad vibration. Smoke had gone away. Vibration had not. Just a moment ago going down the back stretch the engine let go. Obviously this will be a huge hit for their championship hopes and likely take them out of it. >> Devastating for martin Truex, Jr. Coming into the chase. Probably the favorite. One of the best on mile and a half tracks. Listen. >> Already has it out of gear. >> Stay down. >> Second Toyota engine failure we've seen in the chase. We saw the 11 car at Charlotte, Denny Hamlin having engine trouble and now martin Truex Jr. >> This is what we talked about, guys. This is the strategy of seeing,000 race unfolds. Talk about the 78. Unfortunate circumstances. But this affects how is Austin Dillon, Joey Logano, Denny Hamlin going race. Here's a driver that was only 13 ahead. You would assume with any failure he will lose 13 points. That can affect their strategy. They are racing less chase cars for those eight spots. >> If something happens, people benefit from it and some people are hurt by it. That saved Denny Hamlin, that kept Denny Hamlin from going a lap down. I believe it kept Joey Logano going a lap down as well. >> I would expect all the leaders to stay on pit road. They were just there. Back half of the field may come to get fuel. Gibbs cars have been riding around the back. 24th, 25th, 26th no reason to come back. >> Steve, after you had all this just happen and a lot happened in a matter of five laps, if you're Joe Gibbs racing and saw the 20 car get left behind you just saw two cars get penalized are you afraid to give up that track position. >> First thing I'll do is send someone to the garage area to find out what happened to the 78. Can we run cooler oil temperature. Remove tape. Remember that's a tr engine. Very few failures. At the restrictor-plate tracks normally all built the same. I want to know what happened. Anything I can do to prevent it from happening. >> Have to chat with Cole. He's running now. Trying to get to his car to find out exactly what happened. Could be detrimental for the possibility of making knit toround the of eight. When we come back, Dale Jr. Joins us up here in the booth. gps: Turn right. Gps: Turn right here. Gps: Casey, go right. For a racecar driver, turning right is hard. Gps: Come on Casey. No Daddy! Turn right! >>No Daddy! Turn right! But saving money with Geico is easy. Geico, see how much you could save. >>> Welcome back to talladega speedway under the first caution. Engine expiring on the number 78 of true. With that they are making sure there's no fluid on the racetrack so putting down some speedy dry. Joining us in the booth one of the best ever at restrictor-plate racing, Dale Earnhardt Jr. You have six wins here. What how far seen. >> Interesting race. A lot of guys doing different strategies. I like strategy to run upfront every lap to try lead every lap. That's what chase has to do. He has to win this race. Other guys are laying back. How long will they lay back. >> You're putting yourself in chase's situation and what Tony would do. Are your saying I would be doing this. >> I saw him this morning. He said I'll try lead every lap. I said that's the best thing you can do. Don't go to the back. So much harder to get towards front. When you're three wide there's nowhere to go. So much harder as this race progresses to come from rear. >> 144 to go. We have a little time to hang out. >> Up didn't bring any cookies for Steve. >> A lot of mountain dew. >> We're looking forward to the green flag. Went all the way around track, couldn't shakt. Speeding on pit road, 11 of Denny Hamlin. Into the grass and now the 78 of martin Truex Jr. Let's hear from him. He's with Marty. >> You are standing here to process what's gone on. I heard you talk about a vibration, smoke in the cabin. What happened? >> Just developed a vibration and started to lose a little bit of power. Originally I thought it might have bean tire because it was shaking and it got worse and worse until it was time to pit. Once I slowed down and hit pit road and felt the vibration I knew we were in trouble. Not the way we wanted the day to go. Tough way to go out. Proud of the effort. Proud of all the guys. Engine has been great all year. Every once in a while you have a failure. Unfortunate with everything on the line. I don't know. It is what is it. It's racing. It's part it. We'll move on. Try to win the last five races or whatever is left and have a good end to our season. >> Any concern for the other Toyota cars? >> I don't think so. I guess you never know. But, you know, seems like, I think we're pretty much running the same engines. They've been good. Very reliable. I'm sure it was just a part failure, mechanical issue and just unfortunate. >> With the team so good, martin and the car so good how hard is it to walk away. >> Won't be hard if we can win the next five races. >> Martin Truex, Jr. Back here evaluating what's going on with that engine. Designee said it will be harder when they go out for the last five races because of the fact because they feel they could be the champions. >> We're jumping to conclusions. Why they are off the racetrack we've seen chaos here at talladega before. >> Two by two once again, Ricky stenhouse Jr. On the outside. Brad keselowski on the inside. Again start-finish line just past the apex of the tri-oval. Getting up to speed. The 2 of Brad keselowski quite a bit slower of the 17 of Ricky stenhouse Jr. On that restart. >> Ricky stenhouse Jr., I thought he pulled out in front of the 2 car but kept that bottom lane open. You got to be selfish. Maybe he was trying to help Paul Menard. In this kind of racing somebody pushes to you race you have to protect yourself. You can get that spot you have to take it. >> You have to be aggressive. Brad is really smart. Knows what he's doing. Great shove from the 41 on the restart. >> Is that a possibility he thought he might have got too goofed restart and NASCAR called him on it? >> I don't think so. It was a situation he wasn't greedy enough. When you get thread and clear. >> To be successful here to be greedy, you got to be selfish, willing to block. Keselowski will block as if it's the last lap not as if it's lap 48. Every lap. River lap you have to drive that way. You have command of the field right here. He'll get in front of each line. He has a great spotter on top of the box and that guy will tell him what lane is coming. >> That's one of the thing you always did such a good job of. You were always very aggressive. You put your car in position -- don't do that and you would do it and make it work. What I saw that's why you're so special. >> You have to be very greedy and very aggressive, side drafting aggressively every lap. You hate to do it. Some of the competitors out there you race against. You have to. You have to stay up front all day long. >> How about manufacturers working together? Is that something you look at right now in the race and say all right when we get the 10 to go we'll forget. You have two boards upfront. >> Not really. He's going to start hopping back and forth as you see and that's giving him enough of a shove to keep that lead. Very simple what he's doing. As long as nobody gets a real big run he should have the lead here. But, you know, when you're in the back of the pack, three wide you're trying to find somewhere to go. You will do everything you can to get there. >> If you are chase Elliott, he's moving lane to lane. He's got that middle lane and top lane that he can pick from. He's trying to find the energy to come from behind to clear the 2 car. >> You're trying to find that energy. You don't want anybody on your quarter panel side drafting you. 17 will do the exact same thing there. >> They are in trouble. Two drivers up there now. >> I'm letting you all go. I'll start with the pit stop. It seems like we've seen this before that the middle lane and the top lanes seem to stay more organized. Bottom breaks up sooner on the straightaway everyone moves to the top but there's speed in the middle of the corner. Seems the middle or top is the lane to be in. >> That bottom line more wheel in the car down there. Gets a little bit coming off the corners. You're getting side drafted on the right side of the car all the time. You can't drive lower and get away from these guys when you run in the middle of the high side. Can you get away from them and actually improve your position. If you're on the bottom, you're kind of at the mercy of everybody on your outside. >> You cannot go below that yellow the line advance your position. If you advance your position, it will be a penalty. That yellow line you almost have to look at as a wall. You can't go down there. It limits where the driver can go. >> We said side drafting a hundred times in the last five minutes. When did this phenomenon start? >> Seems like the last few years everybody understands it better. >> It's been around for decades. You can see it in a lot of old races and old footage. I don't know whether they knew what was happening when they were side drafting each other but I'll have to be admitting my father was one of the guys starting to understand it and using it and teaching the rest of the field as to how to use it as a tool and now used to be an advantage that very few of us had. Now everyone in the field knows exactly what kit do and how to use it. I think these newer cars are more sensitive to it. Big square cars with long quarter panels are more sensitive. >> Dmaktsly right. When you're on the inside you can get within four or five inches of the carton outside and hold him at bay. Even without any help fighting that side draft. And you're waiting, looking in the mirror for help to come you can sit there and hold that guy. They can side draft him all day long. >> So you're up in the booth and have a smile on your face but we know you much rather be down there on track. >> That's right. I was on the pit box and that's when it hit me. I want to be out there doing what these guys are doing. I want to be making these choices they are making trying to improve my position. But such an exciting perspective to be able to watch it here. But there's nothing like being in the car. >> Making those decisions. >> Riding along right now with Denny Hamlin in the 11 car. He got saved by that caution. That caution kept him from going a lap down. Had this race gone another 15 laps or so he would have found himself a lap down. Now he's worked himself back up to the 10th spot. He's back in the middle of the pack where it's crazy and wild. Slowly back in the pack. >> Junior you mentioned your dad one of the best to be able to drive at restrictor-plate racetracks. Keselowski is trying to do what the intimidator has been able to do. Eastern only on NBC. How are the Redskins doing? >> Not sure. >> What is good is watching the 2 of Brad keselowski out in front and surprisingly you said that in commercial break that being out front is the easiest. >> Absolutely. You're in the lead. All you need do is be in front of the line, has the momentum to give the push. You see Brad in front of the 41 car. The car closest him to. Brad is looking in the mirror down the back straightaway. He's looking in that mirror just about 95% of the lap. There's nothing to look out in front of the car. He's looking in the mirror seeing what lines are coming. His spotter is telling him this shrine forming, that line is forming. The 41 is coming. The 16 right here. The 24 will be defending. So he's listening to that from his spotter and jump in front of that guy. He's not blocking because he's making the move early enough. He's just putting himself right in front of the car that's got the momentum. >>> You use the word simple. Doing it at 190 plus miles per hour. A guy that's pretty close to the front the 24 of chase Elliott. >> He can definitely see the front. He's been the leader for five laps. The bottom line going by chase Elliott. But Elliott has shown an uncanny knack for driving this racetrack. He said some of that is because he's gotten a lot of help from his teammates, veterans like Jimmie Johnson and Kasey kahne and mentioned a guy whose not in the race car today, Dale Earnhardt Jr. He said you helped him a lot. >> I spoke to him this morning. He asked me if I had any advice. I said the situation you're in you can go for broke. The best success I had is when I race every lap to lead it. Any time I went to the back and tried to be calm I could never find a way to get back through the pack. Once it gets down to 50, 30, to go it's three wide. You won't make this run and get through the field to get to lead the. Everybody is trying to go the lead at that point. So the best situation to be is in the top three or leading the race all day. >> We saw that the stats there are almost 200 miles per hour. Here comes Greg Biffle to take the lead away. >> That 2 car got to his right rear quarter panel. He's backing up to the 1, Brad easily clears him and pull the 24 through as well. 16 car had a chance. Had a big run but that big run wasn't being helped by Jamie Mcmurray. Jamie Mcmurray was not close him to. So he had no drafting help. That side draft pulled him out big time because nobody was helping him from behind. >> Can chase stay in front of either line? >> He'll do that for a limited time before one of the lines does get up beside him. He's probably -- he doesn't have a run to challenge Brad. So he's going to get in front of the lines that are moving behind him. >> Let's take a minute and explain to the fans this side drafting. We'll go into the wind tunnel. We have a car in the wind tunnel. You see the car going from front to back. That's what happened when the car is on the racetrack. You see what that does. That smoke is like taxpayer. Drives the air up over on the spoiler of that leading car which aedes a ton of drag and pulls that car back. >> The inside car is the one that slows down. It doesn't speed up the white car. Makes it took like the white car is passing. It slows the 78 car up. Boom he moves away from him to get away from that side draft. Doesn't slow the 2 car. Clears the 78. Immediately pulls in front of him. >> Same thing to 24. >> You can do it on the left or right. It works the same. Get your fender right on there. Get away from him as quickly as you can. >> Speak of getting away the 24 out in front. He must have listened to you. He's out in front now. He brought the 16 along with him. We'll see how long the 24 can do while the 16 can get by him. The 16 and 24 were running side-by-side. Way up the racetrack goes Greg Biffle. >> To get in front of the 24. That was the car he wanted to be in front of even though the 2 is coming as well. He thought the outside line with energy from the outswould be the best. >> How important is the timing to pull away. Is it obvious you've done your work? >> I look at the air coming off the front of the car and it's coming off the car. Very dense coming off the head lights of that car you're trying to side draft. You don't want to be beside that guy. You run into that dense air coming off the nose of the lead car. You have to jump that. Looks like water speed. And not allow him -- you're also getting away from him so he cannot sort of side draft you and defend that position. So you're both sort of bouncing back and forth. That's why the outside is so much easier to do your side drafting because you that have guy on the bottom. Just like the 16 did to take the lead. >> Everybody will be listening to this. >> I'm telling you from what I've seen these guys have got it all figured it out. >> They will spend most of their time on the lake water skiing. >> Sounds like fun. We need to go water skiing to learn how to draft. How about log. Back in this group back in front of the group after what happened earlier. ING that's the one from the 21 team of Ryan Blaney, bringing that down to be the new jack for Joey Logano's team. What happened on the stop is when they put jack in they went too far, went behind that plate and that's where the post on the car got stuck. The crew chief side skirt on the car was bent in. They fixed that. Jack spot of fine. Joey Logano on the lead lap after carrying a jack the entire way around talladega. >> Greg Biffle out in front. The best finish he's ever had at taught second. He did that once back in 2014. But now he has become the leader and trying to take everyone up the racetrack. >> He's looked fast all weekend. He was fastest in practice. When I talked to his crew chief he gave credit to long time crew chief turned head of the restrictor-plate racing at roush-fenway. He said he does such an incredible job preparing these speedway cars. They've not had the season they hoped for. I asked him what a win or a good finish would do here today and he said it would be huge for the organization as a whole. Take a look at the spotters up on-the-spotters stand, the perspective that they have on this massive size racetrack. >> Massive is the point. Look at the view. These spotters are trying to clear these drivers letting them know where the runs are coming from. They use these tools, these special binoculars. You don't fopt cuss too much. They put their radio button in binoculars. >>> You hear information being given to keselowski and calling the drivers of the cars and that's from a long way away. Greg Biffle driving to the bottom. He has debris on the front of his car. Right on his grill. I'm sure he's concerned about that. >> The 16 is keeping an eye on that. Keeping an eye on his temperature. Saying it's 250 degrees now and you saw that move he made, obviously with a car in front no one to run up on him and switch the air to get that piece of debris off. Keeping a close eye on 16. Designee has a decision to make. He knows how hot it can be before the engine is damage. He may have to pull out of line to get behind someone. There's no one to get behind. If he pulls out of line he's going all the way to the back. He won't find a hole. He has a tough decision to make. There's a number. Every driver knows the number. When you get to that number you have to do what you have to do. >> This was something that Greg Biffle was able to accomplish? He's migrated the entire pack up to the wall single file. >> This is a phenomenon that a lot of folks still don't really understand why this works and how this works. Looking at the 24 trying to make a pass maybe for the lead. Basically, when everybody is side-by-side on the bottom, three wide, what have you, everybody but the leader is out of gas. All trying to draft. When be everybody is up on this high groove everybody is wide-open. When we all get up there and you'll see a little bit more gap, spaces between the characters everybody is wide-open. This Sas fast as these cars will go all day long. You don't create runs. It doesn't create runs for anyone in the field as you see down the back straightaway, nobody is creating a run. So it's a safe place to be, especially if you're in the top, you know, top eight or top ten. Brad keselowski getting antsy. The key is for keselowski he'll gain two or three spots but nobody will go with him. If nobody goes with him what does doe if he does not find a hole to get into. That move will shove him to the back. Here's trick. When he makes his move, all right, so everybody is running about half a car length to a car length apart. When he pulls out he needs to side draft the car he's pulling out in front and pass one car at a time. His side draft will back up that car, create enough to -- >> He has a hole. Right now the hole of the 48. It worked out. Had it not he would go all the way to the back. >> Great job. We may be watching one of the new greats, the next great in plate racing. Brad has a tremendous record. Here he goes again. Said drafts the 17. Jimmie may come with him. He's taking a gamble he'll have a gap to get into. I would have side draft the 17 and then just pulled in front of the 17 because that would created enough of a hole. >> 41 of Busch, he's thinking about going. 24 maybe. >> The 24 just stopped the 2s run. >> Needed to. Indecision behind the 2 was the top lane. Now they got organized. Now the 2 is the odd man out. Everybody is nose to tail. 48 came down. 21 came down. Now basically who is willing to switch lanes. Who is willing to risk that and gamble. Right here pull away as he gets in the corner. He turns in the corner, go to the bottom of the racetrack. All the way. Make it as short as he can right there on the bottom of the racetrack try to get a short distance around the corner. >> That's right. You can't make these passes one car at a time. It's thooshd that disciplined. You get such a great run. >> The 48 took the spot. >> The 48 of Jimmie Johnson. Oh, golly. >> Now that's as good a side draft as you can make. He could have stepped right up in front of the 17. >> Want to liptsen into spotter communication. Let's see what Joey has to say to Brad keselowski. >> Middle lane dragging your right corner. Hard right, hard right, hard right. Right corner. Blaney behind you. Clear 17. Blaney and Joey in your mirror. Do not get stuck up top. Copy. Clear. Clear. Don't get stuck up top. Be on the bottom here pretty soon. Copy. Copy. Bottom is clear. Bottom is clear. Whatever you need bottom is clear. You're ahead by two. Right corner on top. Clear high if you need it. Clear two right behind him. Don't get stuck up top. Inside. Ahead by two. Behind you. 17, 48. Stenhouse will come out. Still left corner. Lined up behind you, behind Kurt. 48 will push the 17 to you. 17 to you. 10-4. Need to start working your way down here. Still inside. 48 will push 17. Help you a little bit. 17 went to the bottom. 48 behind you. 10-4. >> That was spotter coverage presented by liberty mutual insurance helping drivers worry less. It looked as though Brad keselowski with the hope of Joey Meier broke up a single line around this racetrack and it's now two by two and even three wide once again. >> He was in seventh place when he started to make these aggressive moves. Now he's battling for the lead. He took a chance. Had it not worked out he could be running 25th or 23rd. He did a good job of side drafting he's retain lead. You see the confidence keselowski has in Joey Meier. >> Some great spotters in this sport. They earn their money. Everybody is getting ready to pit. >> Is that why we're hearing Joey Meier saying don't get stuck up on top. We heard him almost deject when he said there's a car inside. Here they come. They don't want to lock their tires up when they come on to pit road so they have an opportunity to change left side or right side tires if they need to. Log had issues the last time. >> The 22 make sure they are clean. No problems with the jack post from the earlier stop. That jack got stuck underneath the 22 car. They want a clean stop. Probably two tires for Joey Logano and a wedge adjustment and a load of sunoco fuel. Brad keselowski, more tires. Up front. Makes that move all on his own. Four fresh tires here. >> Four Goodyear tires for aufrtin Dillon. Running back in 26th. Not where he needs to be. >> Guys, take a breath because here comes the second pack. They are coming at you right now. Chase Elliott brought Kurt Busch and Jimmie Johnson on pit road now. Everyone trying to make sure they are at pit road speed. >>> Kurt Busch has been running near the front of this pack much of the race. He's happy with his race car. Keeps saying all is good. Tires and fuel for the 41. >> Pit road had a little bit of slow stop with the right front much clean they are time. Four tire change and fuel for 24 car. >> They do not want to speed. No speeding penalties on pit road. Already seen two, the 47 and 11 both had speeding penalties the first-round of stops. Now they have to stay on the apron until they get all the way around one and, two they can blend after they come through turn two. Here comes the 11. Danica Patrick in the 10 just behind him. >> Once again, Denny Hamlin on pit road but three teammates stay on the racetrack. I would have assumed they pitted together. >> Me too. What Denny needs to be different with them. He's the only one on pit road. He is the third wave of pit stops here in this round. I don't understand that. He'll get four Goodyear tires, full load of sunoco fuel. >> The reason do you this because when you come on pit road by yourself your entry to pit road is so much faster. You just have to make sure when you blend you blend within a group which key do. You want to blend with other people but when you pit with so many cars you have to pit. >> Three Joe Gibbs racing cars making their way on to pit road. 19, 20 and 18. >>> Carl Edwards is among them. Those three cars have been hanging out in the back of the pack throughout the course of the day biding their time and find their moment. They will pit now look for a four car change for Edwards. He felt the speed has been pretty good. >> To keep the timing right, Kyle Busch will take on four Goodyear tires. Fill up with sunoco fuel and no adjustments. >> Jgr car, Matt Kenseth, a thought that car would make it to the front pack. No changes. Three Gibbs cars come together, leave together. >> That's synchronized pit stops right there making sure they can get out together and work together as the pack is now going by them. >> Jeff, you made me a believe. I thought pitting yourself was the silliest. Denny Hamlin, he'll lose a few possessions without a doubt further up the pack. I thought you need help accelerating off pit road. But clean on and off was better. >> So difficult guesting on pit road. Dale, you know, getting on and off to those cars your speed is so much slower. When you get an outside line it blows by them. Can you be so much faster. >> Absolutely. >> Mark that down, 3:40 eastern time when Steve Letarte agreed with Jeff burton.I think it looks very sleek. The lights remind me of Audi lights. The middle of the front, about 11th right now but those positions change about every second. >> With nothing more to gain in terms of advancing to the next round but when I talked to Rodney Childress what they can do for Kurt Busch they talked about not running because those plans don't work out. One thing they can do is win the race and make it all about points for the other guys. In that situation, Kurt has points coming in. Not the most but not the least and that can help his teammates the most. >> Yes. Definitely a tough situation being out there with teammates. How can you work with your teammates. He says he can. He rather be his own man. That's way I like to race. Making every decision to benefit me. Being freedy. >> That's why. A teammate sees you in the mirror and expects you to help him. They have five cars that were work together. They came to the last lap and decided we're racing the last lap. Whoever gets there first wins and it ended up being Denny Hamlin. >> I find it purely coincidental they were all up there together. The fact that they all had "Amazing race" cars had a lot to do with that. Do the teammates all talk on Friday, Saturday hey we'll work together? Yes. We Aldo but it comes down to it in the race you got to make lot of decisions to get yourself in position to win. Everybody is here to win. You have gets in the pit box, the road crew, they want you to win. You got to do everything you can all day long to advance your position. >> The fact that they were able to stay together through pit stops where somebody didn't get them separated, they a great plan. I agree with you. Some of it was coincidence. You can't plan it that well. Things don't work out that well. >> 11 doesn't block the 4, the 4 wins the daytona 500. >> Time to bail out on your teammates. >> We'll see how this one unfolds as Brad keselowski continuing to lead at talladega. Right now we completed 107 of the 188 laps scheduled. The last time everyone was on pit road around lap 80 or 81 or 82, so you've gone about 27 laps. And that's a little over half of a fuel run. Green flag back in the air! >> He makes the inside, Kyle Larson and Jamie Mcmurray, those two gained track position. >> Coming up to speed the restricted horsepower takes a while almost a lap for them to get up to full speed. Breaking into two and three wide already as they go into turn three. >> Ryan Blaney thought he had a little bit of a run. Pulled out of line. Brad keselowski knew better. Knew 21 didn't that have momentum. He stayed in line and shuffle the 21 out. >> The best move is let the guy in front of you make move and you fill that hole. You can pick up a spot. >> Four wide as they go through the tri-oval now. You mentioned people could be getting a little more aggressive. That's the first time we've seen four wide and they stay four wide even through one and two. >> Look at the people we have in the front of the pack. Blaney who has not one a cup race. Kasey kahne needing to have a Goodyear. Jamie Mcmurray needing to have a Goodyear. A lot of hungry people at the front of this pack. >> Denny Hamlin trying to block, trying to stay out front. Staying out in front of the 2. Brad keselowski already has LED 69 laps of this race. He wants to be back out front. Joey Logano had the issue with the jack, took it all the way around track, came back on the pit road. Removed the jack. Joey Logano in the top five. >> Denny Hamlin had a speeding penalty and recovered from that. >> So, you were right. That caution whit came out for both of those cars really saved them. They were both in trouble in the first caution of the day. Now the chance for Brad keselowski, he had a big push in the 41 of Kurt Busch. >> Trying to take advantage of the shot up the racetrack just in front of the 21. >> Look what happened to Kurt Busch. Moved it to the back. Keselowski big aggressive move to the bottom. >> There he goes trying to go side-by-side with the 11 for the lead. >> A little side draft. Just about time to stop the 11 and convince the 21 to go with him. That was perfectly timed. >> The 21 side draft the 11. That's why keselowski was able to clear the 11. >> Now Brad keselowski back out in front. Now he chooses the line that he wants to stay in front of. >> We talked all day about the draft being the great equalizer. Why not Bain Blaine. Rookie year for the wood brothers. Maybe it could be Ryan Blaney's turn to bring it back to victory lane. >> Very close. The 44 of Brian Scott up against the 11. Talked about company. Two penske cars and wood brothers car which is basically a third penske car up in front of the pack. >> Ryan Blaney trying to hang on to that second spot now as everyone jockey for position behind him. 22 of Joey Logano on that high line. Here comes the 24 of chase Elliott. Now he's on the bottom of the racetrack. >> The 44 of Brian Scott makes a big move. He'll try to get inside the 22. He does. 64 to go. Seems like it's starting to ratchet up. You're seeing more aggression. They are taking quick left and rights. >> Intensity ramping up. People being more aggressive now as the laps wind down. >> Watch Brad keselowski. He's behind the 11 and now slows down a little bit. Gets the 41 to him. Now that create as run to the 11. You have to have somebody behind you to get those runs. Now he has to pull up in front of the 21 to try to get the run. Now getting into turn three. Now he decides to go to the bottom, make a quick move, go the shortest way around the racetrack. That's what got him in this position. Big side draft. All these things. It wasn't one move it was a collection of moves. >> Jeff that 2 car has been aggressive all day long. There was a little bit of a debate in the team penske camp which car to bring here to talladega. Keselowski wanted to bring the car they won daytona at. He felt comfortable with that car. But he said we spent a lot of time rebuilding this car. That's the car they brought here. Ten laps in practice that's it and parked it. That's how good that 2 car is. >> Ryan Blaney racing a car that has above average of updates on it since it was last run. His first career win here. His job here is to work with his two penske teammates. Joey Logano moving to the inside and Brad keselowski, both are trying to advance, his biggest problem right now he says at times when he goes to make a move no one will go with him. He's been frustrated by that. >> Joey Logano make being moves and same Logano who said a moment ago my car is good but just doesn't have the speed the make the moves I want. He told me earlier the risk versus reward measure changes throughout trees. Seems that risk versus reward is getting more intense on that racetrack. >> The reality of your situation very clear. 62 laps to you go have to be aggressive. >> Who will be the most aggressive? Again the laps continue to wind down. Brad keselowski out in front. Ryan Blaney running seconds as we go NASCAR nonstop. At my office, they call me Boss Man. By the way this is the third straight restrictor-plate racing he's LED the most laps in. >> Let's go the field. >> Those points will certainly help Brad keselowski. His wreck at Kansas last week cleared his mind this week, took Monday off. Monday Tuesday as we ride along with Brad keselowski. He told me earlier that was a blessing. >> Ryan Blaney right here at talladega last year his crew chief impressed with the young rookie. Says he has a good idea,000 race. Their plan to get up front and stay there. >> Log back there in third. He came in right on the cut line of the chase. Right now plus seven points. He told me I love weekends like. It's all about how you do pressure. Pressure packed situation seems to come through. >> Mr. Handles the pressure Kevin Harvick had none this week opinion he's back up to the front. He could win. Very good plate racer. >> Alex bowman subbing for Dale Earnhardt Jr. Got tips how to get around. His crew chief said no matter how much you talk to Dale Jr. You'll never race like him. Alex bowman running in the top five. >> Denny Hamlin Joe Gibbs racing car that came in with a points deficit. The rest of his team had points surplus. Hamlin has been running away from them and trying to stay upfront. He had some code for the 42 of Kyle Larson concerning butterflies. At first Larson had no idea what they were talking about. He said is at it joke? No joke. They figured it out sense and there's a plan between the 42 and 11. >> After being eliminated from the chase in Dover, Jamie Mcmurray said we just want to finish the season strong and get some wins. This is the track they were identifying a great racetrack for Jamie Mcmurray when you look at his record. Seven career wins four on restrictor-plate events. Looking to add to that resume. >> Not the season that Richard petty motorsports hoped for. We know our program is struggling. One thing we could fix it. We have to set the reset button in the offseason. Two tires. Have been able to hold I want to be. Brian Scott running ninth. Michael Mcdowell is supposed to be a good plate racer he could get his best finish ever here at talladega. He's been under the weather so they keep reminding him to stay hydrated. >> Talked all day as we talked with Dale Jr. About racing here at talladega. He's so good here you want to take clues from him. Watching videos is one thing that Austin Dillon has done but other is listening to scanner radio between spotters and drivers to help him become better at this. >> Kurt Busch has yet to win a restrictor-plate racing. As to how hard he said it's a hard it's a chase race. We had wrecks take us out of the lead. There's been times I'm brought back in the points. Trying to keep the big picture to advance. >> Trying to find a way to get back to the front. We've been watching he and the 48 of Jimmie Johnson, kept working the bottom. Once they caught the pack the pack slowed down and Paul Menard hung a left into the 23, 48 followed him. Jamie Mcmurray in the bottom line. Let's see if they can make the progress. >> The question is the bottom lane is becoming formed. It will have a little bit of energy. When do you pull down? Look in front of that guy. Maybe the 11 or 42 of Larson. Maybe it's the 3 here of Austin Dillon. If you think that bottom lane will move to the front you want to get to the front of it. >> You mentioned Austin Dillon. Let's listen to his radio moments ago. >> I know it's early now but getting to the end of this race we have to finish to the top five. >> Yeah. I'm aware of that. I'm aware. We'll do it. >> I like the confidence. >> That's the spotter and the crew chief talking. Telling the spotter what the situation is. Keeping him informed. >> They know they need to be top five right now they are right at the cut line even with their competitors as we go NASCAR nonstop. You'll have to tune into "NASCAR America" daily 90-minute show starting at 5:30 P.M. Eastern. Can Brad keselowski continue and stay out front, get the win and tie Dale Earnhardt for most consecutive restrictor-plate wins? Got a little bit of an issue on the front of the car. >> Brad keselowski is leading this pack around the top single file. Once again has debris on his grill. We go back earlier, like I mention this happened to more than just Brad keselowski. Biffle earlier in the race. Picked up that big piece of white paper. He had to work on getting that debris off the grill. Brad keselowski earlier, look at the debris on his grill. He gives up the lead, let's the 11 go by. Has to cool the water temperature. Three pieces blow off the grill. Dale mentioned something interesting when they start to run the top seems the leader always picks up the debris. >> Interesting but it happened several times. No long a coincidence. It happened for a reason. I don't know what you can do about it. If you're Brad keselowski you won't run the bottom and create two wide scenario. Now things are calm. Things are very, very calm. 47 to go. I thought teams would start pushing sooner. But any time we've seen a car from the back of the pack try to make a move on this run they've gone to the back. Now teams are afraid, drivers are afraid to make a move because you run 20th you make a move next thing you know you're running 25th. That's going the wrong way. >> Got to be frustrating to tleeshd and collect that debris constantly. A moment ago keselowski was 25 below. Right now he's climbing closer to those max temps. He wants Ryan Blaney to move behind him. Last time they did that we saw what happened. Keselowski lost eight or ten spots. He told his spotter when we do it this time let's execute cleaner and make sure we pull it off. >> Good luck. How do you do that? People behind you don't care about your situation. Your teammate might. Kevin Harvick doesn't car. Denny Hamlin doesn't care. They won't do anything to help you. If you pull out of line you'll be doubled up. You will be double wide. People will take advantage of that situation. Not easy to do. >> Look at the ghost points. >> His handout the window. >> Sorry. >> There he goes. There's the move. >> He's going to try to threat 21 back in line. He'll have to give up some momentum. >> Everybody saying can we use this to our advantage. I don't think they can. >> Nice move by 21. >> Done exceptionally well. >> So now because of the debris Ryan Blaney out in front. A little bit of that paper debris that was on the grill of the 2 was blown off. >> 200 miles per hour. I don't know. You take the lead I'm going get in second. There's communication about whether the debris is off or not. Brad keselowski gave up the lead look at what did it. Whole handful of cars single digit above or below the cut line. >> Carl Edwards is one-point to the good. 3 car back in, one-point behind. But Austin has time to make up. Riding around the back may sound good but got it all worked out. >> 2 decides -- he's smoked. This could be it for the 2 of Brad keselowski. >> Fire underneath his car. The 2 has expired an engine. >> Did it overheat? Did they not get that done soon enough? Was the oil too high? We don't know. It's a consideration. >> Third caution has come out now. Another chase driver looks to have ended his day. Front wheel very dirty. And that doesn't sound good at all as he takes a hard left turn back into the garage. >> They have said they were climbing in water temperature and oil temperature and then he has to make a hard left. >> You see the debris is off the grill. It's too late. To Jeff Jess point when you elevate those temperatures, these engines are designed to run within a specific dwoichb temperature at the edge creating the most power if possible. A good engine is two or three horsepower. They don't have a big window. You'll hear this engine start to lay down. He reaches over kpp >> See the smoke. Shut the car off. >> I was thinking, there isn't a window of operating. You have to push it to the edge and the 2 had to -- leaving the race. This is by far the most dominant car now in the garage area. >> How frustrating. How dejected have you seen and heard now two drivers, martin Truex, Jr. Coming into this race thinking he had a chance of winning a championship. Brad keselowski looked as though he was going to dominate this race. Both of their championship hopes will end today. >> What this has done is opened pit road with 43 to go. Right on the edge of the pit window. Every car will be on pit road changing tires and filling them up with sunoco fuel to the top. We could overtime. You need as much fuel as possible. >> All in line. Ed towards you. >> Kurt Busch make an air pressure adjustment. Keep that wheel straight. Just a little bit. >> Austin Dillon and Denny Hamlin right on the cut line. Hamlin will get two tires, Dillon will get four. >> Joey Logano's car was a little too free. Wedge adjustment. He wins that race off pit road. >> Couple of spots gained by Denny Hamlin. He goes up to third as they race off pit road.you don't love that you can't get all your favoritesall day. Let's Go Places. >>> The opportunity for a championship lies in the balance. >> A lot of must-win scenarios goes in favor of the guy who must-win. You're put in that situation, it makes your decision a little easier if you know that's your only option. You have to do whatever it takes to get yourself in. >>> Chase Elliott saying he's in a must-win situation. Want to talk about strategy as we're now under 43 to go brought to you by smithfield foods. Chase Elliott definitely a part of that strategy. >> It's come down to you have 11 of Denny Hamlin and 3 of Austin Dillon. 11 above the cut line, 3 below the cut line. They are still in a battle for the points but chase Elliott just wean the 2 with that engine issue. >> Nothing Hassing changed for chase Elliott. He's in a must-win situation. But what happens if we that have big wreck? Remember we still have 41 to go and we've seen over and over and over at this racetrack how we have that wreck and it creates another wreck. What does it took like if we get that wreck is this. >> The reason that matters is because there are still 33 cars on the lead lap. So you see the 2 went from leading the race or second to combine 33. That's assuming Logano can stay second, Harvick can stay fourth. If they get in that accident with over 30 cars, there's still 27 points available but I think chase Elliott needs to force everything. Every move. Every block. He needs agreeceor. >> Denny Hamlin setting fourth. He has to stay aggressive. Austin Dillon is down in 17th. With 40 to go he can work himself up to the front. He can take those points back and beat Denny Hamlin. It will be a heck of a battle. >> We talk about these drivers on intelligent of the fuel window. Joe Gibbs cars using their strategy to their advantage. They pited a couple of times. They will line up to the back of the field. Remember unlimited overtime. We can see two, three, four, five extra laps. >> If you want the advantage to come to talladega and ride in the back, you have two better races. Put yourself in position. Go alternative right to be conservative. This wasn't given to them. They earned it. They are taking advantage of the situation they created for themselves. >> How about Kurt Busch. Plus 15. He's had what I would describe and I believe they would describe two average races leading up to talladega. Guess what? They are having another average race. But avoiding the big problems. Can they avoid those problems for 40 more laps. >> You have to manage your situation. You can't take a 10th place car and finish 20th. Kurt Busch and his team have done a really good job of managing their races when things weren't going well. >> We keep talking about 278. At minus 17 even though he can't do anything to improve his position, we keep talking about it. One accident. One issue and we could have a 19, an 18, the 11, any of those cars don't lose points. 78 could still find themselves in without even being on the racetrack. >> Cue the "Jaws" music. >> 40 to go. When they come back to the start-finish line 39 laps remaining. At talladega we mentioned the words greedy, aggressive. Last winding down they will become more greedy, more aggressive. Speeds upwards of 200 miles per hour, making split second decisions. Green flag back in the air! >> Let's not forget it's not just about the chase. How about about 21 of Ryan Blaney or 44 of Brian Scott or Mcdowell. Cars that never won a sprint cup race. >> Joey Logano jumps right now in front of that lower line, in front of Kevin Harvick. >> Look at the move Jamie Mcmurray made it three wide on the outside. >> I love this shot. Just shows them moving around. No one is running perfectly. Everyone protect, blocking, looking for an advantage. >> Five cars, six cars rather they would love this race to end just like that. I don't think that will happen. >> Joey Logano lost his teammate. Now log followed by Harvick. Denny Hamlin had a caution on the racetrack. >> There's debris on the racetrack. Caution has come out. We'll try another restart. >> I would call that debris. That's like a quarter of a car back there. >> Quarter panel. >> A quarter panel on the back straight. Back there in the Alabama gang, super stretch. >> Can't be a good feeling if a driver drives down that super stretch and see tire marks from issues of the past. Cars that spun out to the bottom. Got tube menacing look. Everybody is trying to block and do all the things they need to do. Greg Biffle, they to repair the car from earlier. Patch work came off of it. >> What does this caution do? It puts one more car in the lead lap. Now we have a free pass car and a number of cars left, a number of point either available to lose or gain. 35 cars. 35 points can be lost with one stop on pit road, one mistake on the racetrack. >> You mentioned it's terrible for a driver. What's going won the drivers they know how many laps are gone. They have experience. They know what the history is. They know normally we see more and more aggression. We see more caution which creates more restarts and more aggression which creates another caution. So everybody, every driver, the more tense they get. Their blood pressure starts raising. Very stressful as we get near to the end. >> Will anybody come in and top off with fuel? Doesn't look like Phil Mickelson any will come back to pit road. This isn't a competition! . >>> Back at talladega 36 laps to go. Joey Logano in the lead. Unfortunately his teammate Brad keselowski back in the motor home. Had a few minutes to digest what happened. Too many times of the car overheating? >> I don't know. I let the engine guys answer that. When he a really fast Ford and I'm proud of the effort. We came here to win and doing what we needed to do win but didn't play out. >> I know it's a frustrating way to go out especially how good the car was. >> Absolutely. When he an incredible car today. I'm proud of that. Just got keep pushing. I want to finish the season with the most wins. We have a great shot of natural. Cars that ran like this one today will work out. >> I'm sure coming back to the motor home, things are put in a better perspective. >> Sure does. We got one out of the way. Go on home and be ready for next week. >> They knew he was here. Had a dominant car. Engine let go, though. >> So frustrating. We really appreciate the fact that Brad, you know, that's the worst feeling can you feel right there. Knowing he was going to advance with such a great car, had such a good race going and then it all going away so quickly. We're appreciative that Brad was kind to join us there. Following race coverage on NBC sn turn into America's post-race show for more comprehensive NASCAR coverage. Catch victory lane at 6:00 P.M. Eastern. A few names up there that have not won in the sprint cup level. Green flag back in the air! >> See how organized the top line stays with the 22 and 21. That's going then 22 up in the corner. Ano a year ago just had the nose in front of Dale Earnhardt Jr. When the caution came out for the final time at this racetrack. Able to get the win. His teammate Brad keselowski in the garage had been so successful at restrictor-plate racetracks winning the last two restrictor-plate racing. We'll see if Joey Logano can keep with it team penske. >> Difficult position for Blaine zwroi be in. Everybody knows how sport for Joey Logano to advance but important for Blaney to win a race. That's what you work for, to have a chance to win a cup race. Difficult spot for him to be in. >> Look how aggressive the 24 is. 95 trying to go by him. >> Hurricane all the way up against the wall not quite touching but right there. This pack moves into three. >> Once again you see the chase points on the left of the screen. Right now the four that out, the 3 of Austin Dillon. The 78 who is behind the wall. 24 of chase Elliott and 2 of Brad keselowski also behind the wall. 24 still on track. A must-win situation for chase Elliott. >> What a mixed group of experienced level we have at the front of the field. Logano and Harvick, sprint cup veterans. Bowman in third. Ryan Blaney at fourth. Brian Scott in fifth. >>ING talked about understanding your situation, chase Elliott he understands the situation. Knees he has to win. But it's not as easy as driving up there and take the lead. He geired back. He'll try to keep being aggressive. He needs to time those moves. When he makes a move like this one right here he has to make sure somebody went with him or he has a place to go. ING? >> Right now it looks as though he can tuck in behind the 21. We'll see if anybody comes up behind him and gives him some help. Denny Hamlin is back there. Denny Hamlin doesn't want to help chase Elliott. If chase Elliott wins this race ham gets knocked out of the top eight. >> Denny Hamlin heard you. He wasn't going to follow the 24. >> He moved up high trying to get the 24 of chase Elliott right in the middle. See if he can get that to fall back. And now Denny Hamlin dropping back. >> Trevor Bayne, in the 6 making his way up towards the front. >> Joey Logano seeing exactly what he wants to see, single file behind him. >> All the way back to fifth, Kurt Busch. Never has won at a restrictor-plate track. >> Everybody at team penske wants 21 to help 22. But the way that shuffled out in a strange way that works out for Blaney because now he's on his own. Now key do whatever he needs to go to try to win that race and not do something that will make his teammate upset. He now has free reign to do whatever he needs do snung about the pressure on Ryan Blaney. Without the 24 up there I think you can think with a clear head I can try to win this race for me. >> We've seen that 11 car lose a lot of spots in the last few laps. He was pretty good compared to Austin Dillon but right now it's one-point separating the two. He's fallen all the way back to 13th. >> Now no points between the two. Austin Dillon, 11th of Denny Hamlin switching spots. >> A.J. Allmendinger, leading that top lane. Haven't heard much out of him. Had a speeding penalty. We're seeing more movement on the straightaway. >> A.J. Allmendinger trying to lead that second line. A lot of jockeying for position now. >> Clint bowyer found his way towards the front of the pack. He does this at every restrictor-plate racing. He rides around the back. Big move by the 24. 21 trying to block him. Every race you always end up seeing Clint bowyer trying to climb in there. -- You heard it, four wide. >> After that you heard caution. >> Exactly. >> Things getting crazy once again. 29 laps to go. Congratulations Lewis Hamilton, Nico Rosberg has the points lead. We're on lap 164 of 188 from talladega super speedway. Right now it's Joey Logano and Kevin Harvick fighting up front for the lead. They have broken away. Eight car breakaway. Harvick, bowman, A.J. Allmendinger, Ryan Blaney, Denny Hamlin, all involved in that breakaway as they continue to run the bottom of the racetrack. >> Had everything work out the way he needed to, right here the 24 car leading that second pack. See if the guys behind him can get organized. He has his teammate behind him. He can catch that lead pack at a high rate of speed he can make a move. He needs some help from behind. >> This is an elimination race. The end of round two as we get ready for the start round three. Four drivers will be eliminated on the left side of the screen pup see chase points. Right now out front the 22 of Joey Logano, the leader of the race he'll advance. See if key hold on to that win. It's so close. Right at the cut line between Denny Hamlin and Austin Dillon. See cars pulling out of line now. >> That double file even though it's only two cars double file that creates a big draft for these cars behind. Now chase Elliott has some energy from behind, he has some help. Double wide in front. Let's see if he gets to them if he can use that and make a move. >> To concussion on the 24 of chase Elliott we mentioned this several times he needs to win to advance to the round of eight. One thing he was counting on was the help of Jimmie Johnson. Johnson said he would try to help him. He tried to get on the rear bumper of Elliott. Took him a long time. He bypassed Elliott. Now behind him. Trying to give him the help that Elliott has been looking for. >> Chase Elliott needs to clear Clint bowyer which de. All that was good. He picked up some spots. Primarily he needs momentum when he catches this first group. So right now he doesn't have what he needs behind. They are double file. He needs to be single file. >> The group in front of chase Elliott they want to know. They are talking to their spotters. Leapt us know. He gets to the quarter panel of 11. Can he drag the 11 down. >> Ricky stenhouse Jr. Drops down below to 11. Hanging the 24 out. He tries to side draft him tries to bring the 11 back to him. >> The side draft will not overcome another car pushing that car. Chase Elliott has some help from Jamie Mcmurray. >> Because the 11 dropped back a spot, the 3 is now in front of the 11. >> All that momentum has brought the group together. The cars out front don't have that gap. Who will be the first car to make a move. We know chase Elliott even on the outside line he has no choice. He'll try to drag that outside line. Will someone make a move on the bottom? >> Jimmie Johnson actually got out of the bottom lane a little bit to then 24 and to get to his rear bumper which he's done. He got to the rear bumper of helps tame meat. Knowing he has a teammate that will be committed to following him P.M. >> What's going on with jgr. >> They are thinking about the end of the race. >> We don't need to do it. Ash few years ago. On the last lap. Half of them don't make it back to the line. >> We're in position right now. That's what we'll do. >> Main thing that Adam Stevens the crew chief has been doing for Kyle is keep him close now the pack so if they do have position he can pass a few cars. Right now they are to the good. >> I think the Joe Gibbs racing team need to be concerned about their teammate. The 11 is not fine. They need to get up there like Jimmie Johnson is doing trying help his teammate. >> Chase Elliott was not table use all those things going on. He just was not able to use to it his advantage. All the way back to 15. Seemed like the harder chase Elliott tries the further back he goes. He tries to be aggressive and makes a move but doesn't clear someone. Then when he doesn't clear them now he loses spots. He's got to find a way to get the move -- whoa, whoa. >> Big move there. That was the 38 and luckily Landon cassill catches it. That was a great save. >> We're expecting more of that. Under 19 laps to go now. >> Taking a look at the 38. Coming off the concern. He's in the middle. Decided to go up top. 23 filled that spot. Catches the 23's front bumperer and shoots across the 42 and somehow saved it. >> Now here we go again. The line gets organized down to two wide. Here comes chase Elliott. Trying to work the top again. >> A.J. Allmendinger in the 47. Trying to figure out which line he wants to be in. Ryan Blaney in the front of the high line and he gets shuffled out now. >> Chase Elliott wanting to try to get in there and go behind A.J.. Found a way to get in there. They are four wide. Chase Elliott is the top car. First carton outside line three wide. >> Jimmie Johnson is trying to stay behind the 24. There were times company have went by him but trying to help his teammate. 48 has a win. He's guaranteed advancement. >> 200 miles per hour and they are jockeying for position. The final lap trying to figure out who will be the eight to move on to round three. Chase Elliott in a must-win situation in that number 24. Trying to get some help from his teammate. Jimmie Johnson who already has a win. He's guaranteed a spot in the round of eight. >> You keep mentioning it. Look at the 11 he's plus seven because he leap frogged. He's single file. Minding his own business. At the top of your screen that bright pink of Austin Dillon he's seven behind. He has to find seven positions. >> The 22 of Joey Logano is being shown right under the 48. Because he's leading right now. There are drivers up there like Alex bowman, Brian Scott third and fourth that could win this race. That would change everything as far as Joey Logano goes and everybody else behind them in points. >> 17 to go no reason to make their move. Maybe the last couple of laps. So once again now chase Elliott has found his way to the front of the second group. Right now chase Elliott needs to make the right move. He doesn't need to be overly aggressive when he catches this group. There's nobody behind him. No energy. No help. If you try too hard you fine yourself back in the pack. Be smart. Right now stain line wait for some help. Wait for some energy behind you and then make a move. >> 16 to go at talladega is a lifetime, Jeff. You know these guys will get aggressive. What does the 24 have to do. >> Don't go with him. >> He'll follow him. Like getting pulled into a situation. They won't make any ground. Sneeld be better off to go with Menard and hang the 17 out. Instead he picked the 17 up a spot. He should have used that opportunity to shut the 17 out, take that spot and pick that spot up. >> The problem is now 24 has lost a little bit of energy and allowed guys to catch him from behind. Now he's back to looking at his rear view mirror. >> Right here you see the 24, he's kind of got the lead pack. He has to be more patient. Off his rear bumper see what's behind him. He needs Trevor Bayne to get organized. This will then 24. >> He needs to wait for something to happen behind so then he can make the move. >> Those of you watching on NBC turn over NBC sn for the conclusion of this race, f1 coverage continues on NBC now. Under 15 laps to go. Out front log, Kevin Harvick, one and two. Alex bowman, Brian Scott, Kurt Busch never has won on a restrictor-plate track. He's running fifth. Denny Hamlin right now nine points to the good, trying stay in the top eight and be able to advance to the next round. >> Not only are we watching the 24 Joey Logano, the spotter is watching the 24 they are watching the water temperature on that 22 car as well. They have a piece of tear off on the front of the grill like his teammate Brad keselowski. There you see it the reflective part of the grill. It's all over right now for log. Will that affect the temperatures? Will it affect the temperatures and will he be able to hang on to the lead for 14 laps? >> This team cannot afford an engine failure. At some point they've make a decision. The race win is important but not as important as the chase. Do you pull out of line? If you do look at the cars behind you. You will lose spots. Same thing happened his teammate. >> Another leader with debris on the grill. >> Already fourth time we've seen it today. Twice for the 2. Once for the 16 of Greg Biffle now for the 22. >> Okay so he's still good. So the one thing that 22 of Joey Logano needs to understand is that something is going to happen here in just little while. Kevin Harvick will not keep riding behind. At some point you'll find yourself side-by-side. If they can hold off even a little bit over they hold off and wait for that to happen. You're going to have -- you don't have to create a situation where somebody gets in front of you. Things will get wild. >> Jeff you heard that from Joey Logano. I'm 16 under my temp. Two laps ago he was 30 under his temp. It's climbed that much in two laps. >> That's the concern. 12 to go. Not 12 to go at Bristol or martinsville. It's 12 to go at talladega. >> 18 miles he'll have to go. Actually 28 miles he has to go. They are going around the track it's a long ways. If those temperatures continue to climb that could cause an issue for everybody behind him. If that engine goes out who knows what will happen. >> That 3 car of Austin Dillon who currently is three below. He has to find a handful of spots. Two or three spots to gain on the 11. Menard his teammate went to jump on the outside. That's what we've been talking about. Just because you make a move doesn't mean it's the right move. Being aggressive moves to you the back. I don't like that move to the outside. We'll see how it works out. >> He had some help. The 95 behind. That team can help. They are going loyal to rcr. Chris Buescher he knows his position. His position is to run the best key for his team. >> That move to the outside cost three or four spots. It takes discipline. Just because you see somebody make a move or there's a hole to go into doesn't mean that's what you're supposed to. Difficult decisions. >> Now the packing tightening up. >> This lap car here. >> That will make a difference. Log will get a draft. Kevin Harvick will get a draft. That will change the energy of these leaders. How this pack catches that lap car that date of birth time to make a move. >> Joey can use that lap car to pull that piece of debris off. >> That lap car staying way up against the call. >> Going to be side-by-side. Halfway through fact they will come off and be side-by-side. That will pull some energy out of the back part of the pack. >> Joey Logano spotter to stay on the bottom. Don't get that debris off on top. No mention of water temperatures in the last two laps. They are hoping in the 22 camp a lot of people are praying down here in the 22 pit. >> They waited too long. They were going get out of line. Try to recover. They had to do it. Nine to go it's purely up to that roush-fenway engine shop. >> Hey Kevin Harvick I'm going to let you pass me. That's not going to work. >> Anything key do in the car right now with the debris on there. Turn fans off. Turn fans on. >> All key do. Turn fan on but to be honest with you at these speeds and that much airflow, that fan does very little. That fan helps under caution doesn't do a whole lot under green flag situation. >> Jimmie Johnson -- can't seem to get past that 10th or 12th position. They need these leaders to dice it up. Somebody needs to let the 88 know for the good of 24 we need you out of line. We need you to break these leaders up. >> Two distingts lines, Joey Logano out front, debris on the grill. Under eight laps to go. Ryan Blaney trying to make something happen. Chase Elliott jumps out behind him trying to get that second line to work. >> The big line in this race will come who is the first car that's behind Joey Logano to make move. If you see the 21 car of Blaney making a move on the outside which one of these five cars per hind Joey Logano will make the move to get into that draft and then create an opening underneath everybody. So watch for that move when it happens. >> The 11 is helping the leaders because in the sixth position he won't pull out of line. He needs to stick where he's at. He can risk going backwards. >> Man out as they come out of turn two down the back stretch they are going. A.J. Allmendinger in the 47 right there that jacks up the speed. Falls in right in front of the 24 of chase Elliott. Around they go behind Elliott! 5 of Kasey kahne. They were just behind the 24 of chase Elliott. >> That's going create a situation. Maybe three or four to go. Never works out well. >> Incredible. Only 5 of Kasey kahne. >> Let's take a look at what happened. This just behind where chase Elliott was running 2019 wide cars. >> See th of Kasey kahne. Had a tire go down or air caught him offguard. 5 spinning hard to tell. Without a doubt I didn't see any contact 5 just spun out basically on his own. Have to see what the reason was. >> As quickly as that thing came around you never saw a wiggle or anything. Just spun around. Made you think there was some kind of a problem. 3 wasn't shoved up. No one behind him. You have to think it was a tire problem. Be maybe a little bit of a soft tire. Some sort of mechanical issue. >> Turns left for Kasey kahne right in front of the 1 of Jamie Mcmurray. >> There's a lot of tension now. You dropped the green flag with three or four to go and it's so stressful. You just assume there will be a big wreck. It's crazy. So, you will be fighting for real estate. Unfortunate for Kasey kahne, couple of good races the last few times out. Changed the tires on the right side. Need to do some bodywork. Now you have Logano and Kevin Harvick. Harvick has been very good at restarts. Between Logano and Kevin Harvick, which line will run? Where does Logano choose? Does he choose the bottom of the racetrack where he's been running or choose the high line? >> He looks at whose behind him. He has a choice been Alex bowman or Brian Scott. That's his choices. So two rookies, very little time in cup cars. Take your pick. >> Carl Edwards on pit road over the last sequence, last caution they pitted several times. Four tires and packing it as full of fuel as they can. >> Kyle Busch getting that grill clean and four tires. ? Why not. Coming down four fresh Goodyear tires for all of these cars in the back of the pack. Still together. Still maintaining where they need to be and in good championship position to advance. That's the key. >> Now one of their teammates, though, not as good as far as points go. The 11 of Denny Hamlin only two points ahead of the three of Austin Dillon. This really crates a stressful situation for those two teams. >> He put himself in a good position. 3 was grinding it out trying to find those two points. This caution changes everything. 2.66 miles maybe the most important half a mile in S this front stretch the car come off turn four. We've seen in the past points lost from turn four to start-finish line. No bigger than Kasey kahne back in 2014. >> Kasey kahne had a good race. Needed a good finish. Ran about seventh or eighth coming off turn four. Had a little bit of a problem there. Losing a little bit of momentum. Look what happens on the outside of him. One, two, three, four cars on the outside. It's a long way to start-finish line. He ends up losing all four of those spots. Those four points kept him from transferring into the next round. Four points in the tri-oval. Denny Hamlin's lead, two points. >> Two points. Two positions. Kasey kahne, 2014. We've seen two drivers frustrated with finishes. Martin Truex, Jr., Brad keselowski both having engine issues. Who else will join them? This is the elimination race for round two. The chase for the sprint cup heads to martinsville for the first race in the round of eight. Coverage on NBC sn next Sunday at 12:30 P.M. Eastern. >> What a track we're going to. We know Kevin Harvick has advanced. We know Jimmie Johnson has advanced. Jimmie Johnson has won so many races he has to be looking at the advantage. Denny Hamlin can he do it? If he gets out of talladega in the round of eight he's looking forward to martinsville. >> We have chaos here, restrictor-plate. Next week martinsville half mile short track. Door-to-door action. A fun racetrack to watch races, even more fun race to race. It's just full energy from the time they drop the green flag. >> Four laps to go. What have we seen already in the chase in 2016? Well the final restarts have been eventful to say the least. We go back, the winner took the lead on the final restart in four of the five chase races so far. Chicagoland, martin Truex, Jr. Passed Ryan Blaney on the first lap in overtime. Then New Hampshire Kevin Harvick passed Kenseth with six laps to go. You move forward. Charlotte, Jimmie Johnson passing Kenseth with 18 laps to go on the final restarts. Kansas, Harvick, not in a must-win situation but he wanted to hit it out of the park, he passes Carl Edwards with 30 laps to go on the final restart. >> We have just seen when you are leading these races. Have not guaranteed anything. Joey Logano at the top. If he doesn't do everything right key finish this race at 16th, 17th, 18th. We've seen it over and over. He has to have a great start and get the right push. A lot will determine what goes on behind him. >> Looks like debris is off the nose of the 22. The pace car pulls off. In my mind it's all about who has the help. Second row is more important than first row. >> Three laps to go in this race. The advertised distance 188 laps, 500 miles. Back to racing. Joey Logano on the high side. Kevin Harvick down low. >> Behind Logano, 44 not on his rear bumper. The car behind bowman is not on Harvick's bumper. >> Side-by-side for the lead. >> Here comes the push that second row has cost the front row. Who will pull out of line. Denny Hamlin will push. >> They spread out as they come out two of. 22 has the advantage. Can he hang on the it? Here comes the 4 on the bottom. Brian Scott in the 44 trying to push the 22. They separated themselves. Here comes the 88 of Alex bowman. Once genocide drafted. They come out of four. Into the tri-oval. Joey Logano with the advantage. He moves down to the double yellow line. 88 gets. Here comes the 88. Alex bowman slides into the infield and caution comes out. >> That's exactly what we talked about coming to two to go. You have to make moves pup have to do things you weren't going to do earlier. You have to keep your nose in there. You can hear that tire. That's a tire that's come down. Coming apart. That's what that banging noise is. Beating on the asphalt. I've heard it many times. >> Not something you want to hear. >> This is not only more stress for log and Kevin Harvick and Denny Hamlin what they are trying to do for the race but remember the last time on pit road lap 146 that's 40 laps to go from now. Now we're looking at NASCAR overtime we could have multiple attempts. >> Want to take another look what happened coming in to the tri-oval. Alex bowman was running second in that bottom line and may have had some help from behind him. >> Jeff you mentioned before. That left banking. As odd as this will sound the cars are loaded and more stable in the corner here. Seems like here on the flaft racetrack he loses a car. I'm not sure there wasn't any contact for the 44. I don't know if the 41 got light. I think 88 got light and spun around. >> We have a better view. Feel like hit to be contact. I can't see. I can't tell. >> You're in. On the brake. On the brake. >> Here's a great view. >> He's coming around. So you mentioned it's that bottom lane in the tri-oval, the very bottom lane where the 24 car is right now, there is less banking in the tri-oval than anywhere else in that bottom lane. So when you get all bunched up and carton outside of you, a car behind you, takes the air off your car. That's the worse your car will drive all day long. There's so many cars no, air and there's no banking in that bottom lane. >> So right there on the bottom you see he had to chase up the racetrack. I'm going to tell you what this has created. Right now the 11 and the 3 are tied in points. >> Yeah. >> It would go to 11. Over the 3. >> From the best finish. So right now that's why the 11 scored just above the 3 because of the best finish in this round. >> We do know that there are going to be quite a few positions to change hands on this restart. >>> Crew chief for log, an eventful day for you guys. How are you nerves. >> They are good. Joey has done a great job. Race car got a little faster. See where we go. >> Built yourself a little bit of a cushion. Do you feel you're in a position where you have to win the race? >> No. We want to. Joey does too. But I don't think we have to win the race. Just get a top ten decent what Joey does best on restarts. >> Bottom or top on this restart? >> Yeah. >> Not going to tell us. Bottom or top. I have a feeling might go bottom on this one. >> Todd Gordon not telling us what line Joey will take yet. I hear you breathing heavily each time the caution comes out. What's it like to watch this? >> Present annoying. I want to win this thing and make at any time next round. Hard to watch. At though point he's doing a good job. Car has been upfront. Hopefully we finish there. >> Does he need to be in the bottom line because I know he was comfortable running back in sixth touring around the bottom line. >> No. I think key go anywhere he needs to. Either position. Doesn't matter what line forms the tightest and hopefully it's our line. >> Goods luck until the end. Fun for us to watch sometimes guys. Tough on these competitors. >> You know there's another scenario here that we have not talked about a lot as we look once more at the 3 of Austin Dillon. Dillon in a pivotal position to advance into the round of eight. >> You see right here, that one spot how spoirt, one car has a problem. Austin Dillon pass that one car and now we thought it was tied. One-point difference. I keep looking at these chase points how kit happen. 18 of Kyle Busch, he's plus five. Everything looked good because of 7 is well below. Chase Elliott way back in 12th. I'm not sure he can win. What if Denny Hamlin wins. He goes in front of 18. Austin Dillon has a great start. Kyle Busch can be on the outside look in. They have this strategy. I hope to math works out. We've seen how crazy these finishes are. I'm not sure they want to count points yet. Time for 18 to move up a little bit and guarantee himself a spot. >> Slugger what have you seen out of your car recently and how many does he have to get here at the end? >> One spot behind the 11. We had a good start. Something happened to the 88. A nail-biter at talladega and come down to one point or two. Hopefully get a good restart and the bottom line moves. It's crazy to think we've gone all this way and come down to one point but I'm glad we stayed out early. That helped us out. The Chevrolet has been good. Got be really good right now. >> Watching this right now is like what for you >> I have no hair. I'm too old for this. >> Now up to the driver to finish it off. >> He's predicting this could go another five minutes. >> I'm not sure it will be over in five minutes. This is stressful for drivers and crew chiefs. Brian Scott with three to go on this front row with a chance to win his very first race. All these guys with chase scenarios. Here's a guy that has never won a sprint cup race, has an opportunity. He has a chance to win a cup race. >> Close to wins his first cup series race could happen at talladega. Ten other drivers have done that before getting their only sprint cup win at this track. >> They were starting in the bottom and need the bottom for a good start because Denny Hamlin started on the outside. Austin Dillon starting mound. Dillon is a few rows back. It could be as simple which line gets the momentum. Now Dillon unfortunately might be pinned against the apron. 11 has options but will it have enough energy to get there. >> Once they take the green flag if the leader can make it around the overtimeline kbaufgs comes out it will be an official restart and the race will be conclude by the next flag that comes out. Two by two through the restart zone, Joey Logano on the inside, Brian Scott on the outside. >> Nice job of pushing log. Exactly what Joey Logano needs. Now he's clear of Scott. The inside line is rolling just a little bit quicker. Inches separate these cars. All the way up the racetrack they go. >> Logano got off his rear bumper. >> Here they come to the overtimeline. They make it to the overtimeline without a caution coming out. Official restart and officially this race can conclude with the next flag. Now they fight for position, fight for the win. Joey Logano with the lead. Denny Hamlin running third. With that position he's currently in the top eight. And could advance to the round of eight. White flag in the air. One more time around. >> You mentioned it, Steve, 11 cars running in third. He's in the bottom lane. Austin Dillon moved to the bottom lane. He's way back in 12th. Went to the bottom. >> How aggressive does Brian Scott be. How aggressive can he be? Trying to win his first race. A huge gap between the 22 and 44 as they enter turn three for the final time. Up the racetrack, the 22 goes block the 44. Coming out of turn four, a long ways back to the checkered flag. Three and four wide fighting for position. Joey Logano through the tri-oval. Logano wins at talladega! Because of the finish that Denny Hamlin has, finishing in third the points ended up being tied for the cut line between he and Austin Dillon with his finish of third that's better than Austin Dillon's finish in this round. He will get the tiebreaker and advance to round of eight. That's just how close it was at talladega. Joey Logano is going to celebrate once again. A year ago he was able to win this race before overtime. He won I want bay foot over Dale Earnhardt Jr. Now he wins convincingly. Joey Logano will make it into the round of eight to have a shot at the championship. >> Once again this chase scenario has brought out the best in a race team. Log came in. Who will do what they needed to do to move forward, Joey Logano and his team almost in a must-win situation finds a way to win the race. >> Joey Logano celebrating at talladega super speedway. What an incredible finish. It took overtime to determine. Kurt Busch, Matt Kenseth, Kyle Busch, Carl Edwards, Denny Hamlin. All in the top eight for the chase points. Their championship hopes still alive. Joey Logano will continue to celebrate. Tires falling off the car. 0 that's what Joey Logano ended up doing today. The four drivers that had their championship hopes extinguished today, the 3 of Austin Dillon. The 78, 24 and 2 just how close it was. Take a look. The best finish in this round is the tiebreaker. You look at this finish by Denny Hamlin today, the third place finish was the tiebreaker and that's why he'll advance. >> Up talked about where the start-finish line is. Coming off turn four you see Austin Dillon back about six cars from Denny Hamlin. I thought Denny Hamlin gave it away. This 11 car will hang a right to block the 41. He doesn't. The 4 to his left stains line. You see the 3 change lanes to gain the points. Right here. If the 11 doesn't get back in fronts of this 4 car, he would lose that block on the 4 of Kevin Harvick right there basically advanced the 11 in to the round of eight. To be quite honest Kevin Harvick doesn't lift there, Kevin Harvick had to lift to keep that from happening. Trying to prevent a wreck from happening, Kevin Harvick -- >> Side gravity backed by the 41. Right there. Two feet. Two feet have kept Denny Hamlin's hopes alive. >> He gets passed by the 41 right there. If he finishes fourth the points aren't the same. He's one point behind the 3 of Austin Dillon and Austin Dillon advances. >> Austin Dillon got beaten to the line by maybe three feet also. A matter of feet. >> Matter of feet. A matter of inches, ultimately Joey Logano in victory lane. >> Back at talladega, victory lane at talladega. Joey Logano will come out of the top of the 22 car. Why not. That's a way to celebrate. How you going to get out of there. All week long he said he was looking forward to this race and now we know why. Joey when you were dragging the jack around the racetrack did you think this might not be your day? >> Early enough in the day that something happened. No one got worked up. I focused in on their drive. Feels good to win in a clutch moment like that and coming here with the pressure on and this team excels when that happens. What an awesome race. Fun race. Aaa, trader autozone. Coca-Cola and wheels up. What a great day. Feels so good to win here. You never you know have it until the end. How about Brian Scott, a couple of Fords there. >> So much to overcome. Debris on the grill and then few final restarts. Walk me through the last one with the push from Ford how key that was. >> I wasn't sure what lane to go into. I was debating about the Tony. Todd said the bottom. I think I'll take the bottom. I was still even coming to the go line take top or bottom. I didn't have my mind made up. Overall it worked. Key vein great job pushing me out to get cleared and block the 44 there and be able to stay out front. We're going the next round. >> You told us, you said I don't come here thinking about people knocking us out I think about knocking other people out. >> What's gives you so much confidence? >> Attitude. The team has a lot of it. We showed it last year. We're on pace to do it again. I'm ready for the challenge ahead of us. How you do not have confidence when you get to drive for Roger penske. >> You all have your teammate Brad keselowski. Were you worried about your motor? >> I heard he had debris. Blaney did a good job. Apparently too late. Unfortunate for him. I think he had the fastest car business a long shot. What a great car he had. A lot of garbage flying by. We picked some of it as well. We did as well not as much >> You're going to the next roupd. >> Yes. This 22 team almost in a must-win situation they pull it off, Rick. >> Time for the Coca-Cola winning moment for Joey Logano. Think about his day with the jack stuck underneath the 22 when they dropped the jack they held on to it. Equipment leaving the pit box. It stays with him all the way around the track. So they bring in a new jack. The problems continue debris on the front of the car. The temperature starting to rise. But in the end it was log with a great restart able to block. And gets to victory lane. He'll advance to the round of eight. What a day it was for eight drivers that now know their championship hopes are still alive. Jimmie Johnson, Joey Logano, Kevin Harvick all winning to advance. Kurt Busch doing what he needed to do to advance. Matt Kenseth, Kyle Busch, Carl Edwards, Denny Hamlin and how close that finish was for him. >> So close. I would say three of the fastest cars in this chase so far now eliminated, Truex had been running very well, chase Elliott, keselowski all three of those cars, quality teams, championship contenders are now out. >> The next three race will be even more of a daunting task to try to win. You look at the eight cars that haven't advanced while they have tremendous amount of wins between them look at the cars that didn't advance. Martin Truex, Jr., Brad keselowski. The 78 have dominated. We have martinsville then mile and a half at Texas and finish up with the one mile at Phoenix. Points or wins? >> Chase Elliott had to win at talladega if he wanted to advance. It didn't happen today. He finished 12th. >> Chase Elliott came into Sunday knowing he needed to win to advance. Came up a little bit short. Certainly looked like you were aggressive. What was it like four out there today. >> Trying to be as aggressive as we could. Make stuff happen. Tough to do as you get back in the pack and make your way forward. Takes time. Definitely a lot of power in numbers. We were disappointed we came up short. The team has been fighting hard. Had some awesome race cars. Definitely unfortunate to come up short there. >> I know there was hope is you could work with Jimmie Johnson today and your other teammates. Seemed like it took a while before Jimmie court rear bumper. >> Those guys were awesome to work with. They didn't hurt us. That was main goal. We tried to make it happen. And just it wasn't enough. Enough folks to give us the time that we were together. I appreciate those guys helping us what they could and trying not to hurt us and definitely appreciate that. We move on to martinsville and try to go get them. >> A strong explanation point to his rookie chase. He'll not advance toround the of eight. >> We knew it would come down the v-very end. Describe the final laps in getting those spots. >> We did everything we could. Just wasn't our day today. Good lord had another plan for us. He'll be back strong next year. Disappointing when you tie. I don't know. Tiebreaker went to him. Part of it hopefully raised a lot of money for breast cancer awareness today and we'll be back stronger than ever next year. >> You guys pulled it together late in the round. How did that happen >> We're fighters. I need to thank our teammates. Just didn't get enough. One spot. One spot at the line. Old girl didn't have enough to get 43. >> Good season. Tough end for Austin Dillon. >>> Opposite end of that a great finish for Brian Scott who was with Kelly moments ago. >> What a day for Brian Scott running up front for most of that. Brian take me through those closing laps. What was it like alongside a guy like Joey Logano who has won here before? >> It was nerve-racking. Felt guys would do what they could to shuffle me out of because I'm a rookie. The Ford was strong all day and we worked hard all day to make friends with the draft and to show we belonged up front. Just did everything I could at the end to give the guys behind me Denny no choice but to work with me. I kept trying back up. I could never have closed in enough to get to his quarter panel. I stalled out. All in all a great day. We just didn't make any mistakes. We knew we need that type of day. Engine performed well and kept track position. Capitalize on every opportunity we have. >> We know this has not been the season that Richard petty motorsports would have hoped for. What can this good finish do to close the season snut hopefully give us some momentum heading into the final handful of race. Try to the end season on a good note and some good things going into 2017. >> Thank you. >> Good thing Denny Hamlin finished third because Austin Dillon's best finish in the round was six last week at Kansas. Were you aware of that. >> If we were to tie we needed to finish fifth or better. That played no role in the final lap. I had no idea where I was. We needed to get every position I could. I knew that my best opportunity was to try to push the 44 and then coming off of 4, I was indecisive. I almost got stuck in the middle. When I came down there 4 cut me break and got us back down and that allowed me to surge past the 41 which come to find out we needed that spot. >> Your three teammates rode around the back. What was that like? >> It was tough. I knew I had a tough road ahead of me because I'm watching how much I beat the 41. Unbelievable. This is really the first true good fortune I've had in my 11 year career. I knew it was going to be a tough day fighting with teammates. Other teammates from other teams. And, you know, I thought this was the best case scenario for us is to go out here and finish in the top five and hope to chips fall in a good way for us and they did. >> Maybe this is a new way to chase for Denny Hamlin. >> Finish he was talking about that he was watching just how close it was. He was behind the 41 as it came out of the tri-oval. He had to surge ahead and ended up being that close. Just that close for Denny Hamlin to advance into the round of eight. >> We always talk about this is a game of inches. People don't believe us. This is what we're talk about. Small things make a huge difference and it's on full display today. >> 3 car very close as well. Comes across the finish line. Way up there on the high side. All he needed was one more point as well. An incredible day. A great day for log as he celebrates in victory lane. Let's send it over to Kris. >> What a race it was. We talk all the time how talladega comes down to inches where every position matters. You just saw it in video proof with Denny Hamlin and Kurt Busch. Right now Joey Logano in victory lane. Ironically the last time we stood here outside of victory lane last year it was the same driver who was celebrating, but in a totally different fashion. Last year Joey Logano dominated this round. He got in a must-win situation. >> As a driver he alluded to that. He appreciated being in that position and handling all those things. He pointed out his teammate had the better car. That's not always the case. It's the driver that makes the right decisions and Joey did a fantastic job of doing that. >> If you remember last year we were scratching our heads. The restart. The crash that wasn't crash. How they put everything together. NASCAR did a good job last year sorting that out. Today they had a car capable of winning this race and had a driver capable of winning this race. A driver that was content when he was running third not to force any issues. When he had an opportunity to take the lead and pace this field that's what he did. >> For fans who might be watching why your showing what happened in third or fourth or battle for seventh or eighth, the math that's what it came down to for drivers like Austin Dillon. >> This might be the most competitive since they started. Right there we saw in the second round this is how much, right there, less than two feet that Denny Hamlin had moved intoround the of eight instead of Austin Dillon. That just points out what we've been talking about, how competitive this is. The best thing about today it was a great Dave racing all the way around. No huge crash. These drivers went on to the end. >> Today we saw a race. Drivers we saw strategy. Pick the inside line outside line. It was all racing. We didn't that have big one that decided the outcome. They all had an opportunity. Some had bad luck. And then the race comes down to addition and subtraction. A fraction of an inch here, a fraction of an inch there. >> Joey Logano wins the race in talladega. He's one of the drivers. The four dliefrs eliminated Austin Dillon, martin Truex, Jr., chase Elliott and Brad keselowski. Their title hopes are now done for this season. When we come back we'll hear from some more of the drivers who are moving on who do have a chance at the NASCAR sprint cup championship. That's coming up on our NASCAR post-race show from talladega continues.adega continues. >> Welcome to "NASCAR America" post-race show presented by advanced auto parts. Joey Logano, your winner at talladega for the second year in a row in this chase race. He moves on with a win. He, Kevin Harvick and Jimmie Johnson winners in this round. Carl Edwards didn't twrains but he is moving on toround the of eight. Few moments ago we spoke with Mike. >> Strategy, strategy, strategy. That was the word of the day for Joe Gibbs racing. Carl Edwards what was it like hanging in the back throughout much of the afternoon. >> Stressful. Stressful. Other word of the day. We don't like race that way. But that's the hand you're dealt. You don't want to give it up. We played it right. We'll get a rotissiere chicken sandwich and move on to martinsville. Hopefully I'll get some tips and I want to get that victory in martinsville. >> I heard you asking for updates. Were there some anxious moments that perhaps you wouldn't get to where you needed to be. >> Absolutely. I know Austin Dillon has one of the best records at these tracks. That's who we were watching. He did a good job at the end. He drove hard. Made some positions up. Did a great job. Really happy everyone drove those last couple of laps start. >> Carl Edwards 29th at taught but four points to the good he moves up. >> 30th today was good enough for Kyle. I got to ask you what's it like racing that way. >> Frustrating. But to have a day today will make for a more exciting day later on down road. You got take the good with the bad. Today was one of those, having to ride around. But reward is being able to race on and go into the next round and have an opportunity to race for championship. We feel good about the next round. Martinsville we won in the spring. Texas we did. Going Phoenix we've gotten better. And able to finish in the top ten. We'll reset our goals and what we need to accomplish. For what we ran today it didn't show anything about our Joe Gibbs racing Snickers Camry. Really good car. -- Wasn't the day that we needed to be going what other guys were doing. >> It showed you can stick to a plan and follow a goal. Any moments that concerned you >> A little bit. Last couple of restarts, tried to maintain a couple of spots. Having all those guys racing up front for everything that's worth and possibly getting somebody crossed up in front of us and not being able to finish that way. But everybody did a really good job relatively and we were able to make it to the end. Again we did all we needed to do today. >> Three good tracks coming up for Kyle. >> Matt Kenseth was one of three Joe Gibbs racing team that hung in the back. Looked like a difficult strategy to execute in terms of having the patience to do it. >> That's for sure. You want to win races. Kind of unintended consequence of being cut off race and the way the chase works. You can't afford to get wrecked. It was the cards we were dealt. When he to get to martinsville and race four more weebs and have a shot. >> Something you can enjoy is knowing you have advanced. You look at the three races coming up. How do you handicap yourself in comparing yourself to the competition. >> Good race cars. Good race car drivers. Good teams. All eight of them are very capable. So nobody knows what will happen. How far to tune into NBC and watch. Or better yet buy a ticket and come and watch. You don't know what will happen. Very unpredictable. Certainly our team has the hardware to get it done. We have to do all the right things throughout the weekend. You can't have any more mistakes throughout the rest of the year. >> Thanks for your time. >> Thank you. >> Matt Kenseth one of the final eight heading to martinsville. >>> And we appreciate the plug for NBC from Matt in the interview. The schas standings again. Brad keselowski, chase Elliott, martin Truex and Austin Dillon, the four drivers who do not advance not round of eight. You see Joey Logano jumped up to second in the chase standings with a win and it smells like beer. Who knew the 22 team had been celebrating. Rightfully so. Congratulations. What a day. >> Crazy. Typical talladega but there's so much more on your mind. This is the first time I ran talladega on the race and a chance of getting knocked out. A lot more on my mind but ultimately it worked out the same. Great car, great team. It's nice to come to a track when the pressure is on and you cross the finish line. >> Last year you made it look easy. This year it looked hard. What does a win like this say about you as a driver and this team? >> I think we're in a very good spot. Now we're all equal. Pretty big day for the 22 team to keep moving on. Our cars are good. We have speed. We've been executing really good besides Charlotte this round. We've been able to come back with a crash in Charlotte, that feels good. >> How about the last two restarts. So you take the outside on one, the inside on the last one. Were you just showing off or was there a plan there? >> Okay. No, there was a plan behind that. I thought the restart before I had a good pusher. I was confused the last one. I have Kevin who had a lot of experience and pushed me good and was very disciplined. Maybe I'll take him. Then I saw the top. I don't know. What do I do? I asked my crew chief, Todd. What do I do? >> Tell me how to drive. >> What do I do? He said stick with Harvick. I said okay. That was a big deal. He was going to push me ahead really well. Once I was clear in three and four, I got the momentum of the top side off of turn two. That was key. If I wasn't able to take the lead there, I don't believe I would have won the race. That was a key moment. >> You spoke about coming into this race this year with some adversity. All of a sudden we have the jack hung up under the car. Talk us through you and your conversation with Todd Gordon. It happened early in the race so there was recovery time. Talk us through how you guys kept your composure. >> We stayed calm. It's a long race. That was our first pit stop. I've been in this race before, you knock off fenders and finish in the top five. Things can happen. This is the first time I've seen it here. I didn't even know I had the jack under the car. I looked to the left and it was to my head, the jack handle. I couldn't shake it. Have to get a new jack for martinsville, I think. >> The jack. >> I think that is garbage. >> You've enjoyed this long enough. You're in the round of 8. Talk about the next three tracks, how different this is going to be with the three different types of racetracks and how you see your team. >> We have some good racetracks. Martinsville is good for us. We've found something that's made us more competitive at that racetrack. Texas is good for us. Phoenix, we finished third there last year. We've run fairly consistent. Not quite a winning car team but consistent. Have to do a little bit more. If we can get through the first couple of races and build a cushion, if we can win like today, that would be a lot better than anything. We're going to try to do that. Winning at martinsville has a huge advantage. You know you're not going to finish worse than fourth. All you do is focus in on Miami. That's all you work on. >> As we move into this round, a lot of fast cars.
