That was a good save, but the best save on a plate track was the year before when Jamie Mac and Kyle Busch damn near wrecked going into turn 3. “YOU CANNOT DO THAT!” - DW

While we're talking about drivers named Michael and crazy saves, how about Michael Self in 2020

Not many people will remember it bc they didn't really show it on the broadcast but I think the best plate track save ever is Matt Kenseth from the 07' 500. I think there was like 6 or 7 to go but he got super sideways in front of I think Harvick and saved that shit.

I've been rolling off here looking left at your pizza it's a beautiful perhaps a perfect day for racing in central Alabama 82 degrees just a few light fluffy clouds not much of a breeze just enough and a lot of sunshine the 43 car filled rolls off mindful of what happened here last fall upper left of your screen Carl Edwards bump-drafting the 16 his teammate Greg Biffle and in the blink of an eye most of the Roush Fenway fleet along with a lot of other contenders are taken out of the race a bad result for Greg Biffle and yet today Biffle lines up on the front row alongside Juan Pablo Montoya who has his first oval track poll since coming to NASCAR from form in the one sure exit harness with his best ever starts since coming here from IndyCar in row to clip boy and Regan Smith who nearly won this race last year in Row three and as we have a look at the rest of our starting lineup Darrell let's dial up brake pedal oh hey Greg Biffle DW here you got a coffee buddy [Music] have you made any pre-race arrangements here with anybody but to work with you today and try to get you keep you up front the way you are now by my run you know off the top of the racetrack a little bit depends on how it gets going at the beginning their top line has a little rod 5 run for up the racetrack and not give that little group of 10 right out of the beginning about in the team meeting yesterday or this morning whatever you had it did you talk to your teammates maybe a thing about what happened here last year last year or yesterday either one probably yeah we you know we're going to help each other the best we can but but because we have to do it right all right my friend we'll have a great day you've been running good keep her up front keep keep everything in your windshield or in your rear view mirror and keep that windshield cleaner qualified so well the guys just doing a great job for me past restrictor plate car had a few years ago I'm excited about today all right Roger that good luck Greg biffle's starting outside pole today make it a great race stay with the perfect balance of flavor and refreshment Budweiser the great American lager let's take a look at our FedEx understanding the race what this is is the trends or the patterns of the eight spring races we've been doing NASCAR on Fox here number of cautions averaged about six the last four races we've had eight in 2001 caution free the first caution comes normally on the average about lap 35 in 2002 it went all the way to lap 116 normally the first caution for the first crash the longest green run here averaged about 82 laps that's about double what a fuel run he is so we'll see probably one of the two green flag stops at least and the last caution you can almost bank on it around lap 177 roughly tend to go sometimes on the last lap it's not unusual to have a green white checker here not unusual I thought it was rule five we had one a tow seven and we had 108 so it is it's almost expected one car on pit road believe that Scott speed jacking up the left side of his car let's go down to our pit reporters and get late breaking stories Krista voda well Mike last week Jeff Gordon turned in his worst performance of the year in Phoenix he was sick though his back was killing him his back has been an issue all year long I talked with Andy Krupp who's in charge of the inside of his race car he said they thought about using lumbar bags or changing the angle the seat they did none of that Jeff said he should be good here because it really only bothers him on the short track Jeff did tell me the spasms continue but he said here at Talladega he is stronger than ever Steve well Krista all these drivers have spotters atop the roof here at Talladega their eyes in the sky now for Ryan Newman his spotter is his father Greg Greg told me this morning two things to consider here at Talladega I've got to get information to Ryan very quickly the holes closed much quicker than they do at Daytona and I have to tell them about the muscle coming behind him it's good Yocum on Saturday Dale Earnhardt jr. cup spot or TJ managers worked his Saturday gig with Brad Keselowski so Dale jr. had to go to the bullpen for his spotter and he chose his cousin for the first time his career Tony Eury jr. was a spotter for NASCAR race he learned a lot of different factors the biggest issue for today the heat fields I can help them go to Victory Lane utilizing their second channel passing information dick Berggren from the pits to the spotter better today Oh jr. well three-time Indy Car Series champion Sam Hornish has had a rough introduction to big-league stock car racing yesterday however he turned in his best time trial effort ever fourth unfortunately last night he came down with the flu caught it from his wife he's been up sick all night long been to the infirmary twice this morning to get IVs he told me a few moments ago he's not sure he's gonna make it all the way to the end of the race so they have got a backup driver here ready to go in case Hornish can't finish Scott speed made that pit stop Larry and they're going he's going to be held for one lap well I think we need to explain the whole procedure here this is an impound weekend which basically means after qualifying yesterday NASCAR impounds the cars you cannot work on them you put them out there and you race him with your qualifying setup Scott speed was one of the gore go home cars top 35 locked into the show the rule is you can change things on your car after the green flag is displayed Jim Alers brought that car to pit road they were making changes that made the car run fast that wouldn't be good for the race they will be penalized one lap for that Jeff Gordon in the year 2001 hear from 36 the starting position so you can win from anywhere in the field and no matter how much you've won before Talladega has been fertile ground for drivers to get their first win nine drivers have their first win at Talladega and these seven drivers have their only career wins and what's now the Sprint Cup Series here at Talladega that's our x-men x-factor of the race x-men origins Wolverine opens everywhere this Friday of those seven Brian Vickers is in the race today trying for his career win number two [Music] today's race will go 500 point one miles 188 laps and there you see at pit road speed 55 miles per hour the pit window for Sunoco race fuel 42 to 46 laps a lot of cars go into the rear for engine changes you see Robby Gordon his car was too low in post qualifying inspection his time was disallowed one thing if you look at those engines all four of the Richard Petty Motorsports cars had to change in as they came here with a little different package to build a run more tape on the nose to help the drag and it didn't work for them so they had to change engine and all four of those bones it's real quickly on Jeff Gordon's back you're gonna have more back pain here and you already where we go not from the physical stress on the stress yeah how hard you hope tight you hold on and you got to keep that right foot planted that runs right up to your back another driver who might be a little bruised is Matt Kenseth David Ragan won the race yesterday his Roush Fenway teammate was not so fortunate Matt was unhurt but that was a wild ride yeah and you know when you see a car tumbling like it the driver really is not taking a real hard beating inside the car you're strapped in so tightly as long as it keeps moving it's dissipating energy doesn't hurt too bad 80 plus degrees nearly cloudless skies packed in field and a very strong grandstand crowd ready to see the world's fastest Speedway and what it has to unfold 443 great drivers okay sorry go ahead they're coming how fast it is two hours and 39 minutes and 18 seconds in 1987 our 97 our $488 they head toward the tri-oval and unlike Daytona the start/finish line is not in the center of the tri-oval it's way down past the exit of turn pit road down toward turn one many a race has been won or lost between this point right here and the start/finish line DW she's big and she's bad and she's bold and she's fast rich one more time oh this is one of those places Larry what we're going to do a lot of racing [Music] speeds still building in the back straightaway still too late and I know you won't believe this but you already know how good you're gonna run today or at least how good your car's gonna be [Applause] [Music] to my nether three and four wide through the tri-oval car gets a push from his teammate Martin tricks junior he'll lead lap the back of his teammate David Ragan I assume II just what's david ragan in front of you today not behind him now the outside groove led by Jeff Gordon with an assist for a Matt Kenseth but they are not gaining on that front pack on the inside scuse me it's Biffle and Kenseth together on the outside Mike a lot of these guys kill me that these cars is co t car really likes the middle lane then it really performs well in the middle Kenseth is one that really likes his car and here he comes a huge suck on this car from both sides and it just [Music] Jr and Biffle man Lane hooked up trying to run down the front for two Dei Ganassi Chevrolet's on point then a Richard Childress Chevy and then the first Hendrick car is Mark Martin just looked at the run that that group is getting on the high side when you get lined up you just you pick up speed and now you see Greg biffle's hung on the outside now he's getting some help but look at the positions he lost when it outside really works is when the bottom is all clogged up and you get a little wide open and get by a lot of cars little tight cars that started on the inside of rows one through four positions one through four is the inside line toya continues to lead and a lot of folks wondering can the corner an IndyCar star when in a stock car at Talladega he's won at Monaco he's we win at Talladega he can win anywhere if he's got a good car but it's really much easier here than anywhere else we go if you've got a fastball stay right there the push that he was getting off into turn three teammate Martin Trix jr. 197 miles per hour now we're seeing Dale Earnhardt jr. in the 88 get that push by Denny Hamlin in the 11 two cars I don't know why two cars can get a lot better run on that outside than a group of cars can it's just something about two cars speed it looked like Bart Martin went up to pick up jr. by the time he got to the top lane jr. was long gone now it's jr. and his former teammate Martin Truex trying to take the lead from Montoya [Music] it's like when you run that High Line especially coming off term especially if you've got three or four cars or in the case of this maybe ten cars run down that back straightaway Dale Earnhardt jr. goes to the lead Talladega Denny Hamlin is his wingman they don't get any closer than just like that and junior nation filling this Talladega grandstand comes to life this is what they came to see if you're within 30 miles of the Speedway it's not an earthquake Dale Earnhardt jr. Zin and let me tell you Darryl you talked about here a show I just believe I know this is only one race but I think if he comes out of here with a good race you know what it's gonna build momentum he does not have a good race it possibly could just [Music] four-wide mid-pack with bobby labonte up top now they break back to three abreast and the lead will change again Montoya has picked up Truex and the outside line moves Crysta hold on let's let this thing get strung out we don't have to like a teammate trying to get Truex those five points you can think like that when you're leading the race [Applause] anybody in front of you he's not the leader for long because Truex with Kenseth and Jeff Gordon in the middle and here comes Reagan yesterday's winner David Ragan in the number six with rookie Joey Logano up top where Logano come from that was the 22nd they work together yesterday it was Logano that actually gave Reagan the shot that he needed to get oh tundish more Jeff Gordon million registered in the wall I think that was chaired below here we go eight nine ten cars involved man you hate to see believe Jeff Gordon was the first car scented coffee pot into the wall somebody somebody hit Jeff and that got started it look it in looks like a junkyard the garage because it is oh boy you're all torn up Scott Riggs is in a Jamie McMurray Kevin Harvick Mark Martin Jeff Gordon and more let's see where's let's see where Jeff Gordon is here because you see the smoke first when he makes contact with someone and it's the car he was inside now here's Gordon here's Matt Kenseth watch the two of them and see if there's a puff of smoke in sight Jeff is they got cars on the inside of him on the outside of he oh and Kenseth just looks like he was leaving a little room on the bottom and moved up a tad he got into Jeff Kasey Kahne involved well I think Allmendinger listen when the field went by there were only about hat it's only about half a feet left [Music] you can see right there Matt Kenseth just gets into that left front of Jeff Gordon and Gordon goes up and gets in the side of the 71 Gilliland nowhere for Kurt Busch to go Brian Vickers and they just stack up from there look that's a six pack into the wall just all in one move and this is the way the big one works at Talladega saw cars running in the top five that were involved cars running outside the top 25 that we're involved yeah hey Ted the old Pepsi challenger is uh getting opened up like a can of Pepsi got Gilliland as he went around who spun down off the nose of the - Harvey can look at Marc Marc took a heck for a ride in the 5 car now Kasey Kahne has climbed out of his car he's ok it's gonna be easier to list the cars I'm not involved Mike when they went by here and of course we'll see them on the track out here let's have to feel most of the cars in the low groove up until then Oh Boyer took a hard shot on a stack from Gilliland so did the 71 I mean though there are cars that were getting pounded in this wreck let's look out from behind Jeff Gordon that's Kurt Busch yeah again completely jump up on me let's ride with Kevin Harvick [Music] and let's ride with kasey kahne [Music] I'd like to see the kevin harvick angle once again and watch Jeff Gordon's car and see if it gets loose Darrell before the contact Jeff Gordon is right up in here Kurt Busch behind him he jumps out a little I think this is just a kind that's just the contact from the 17 I was talking to the right you're right exactly what caused that these cars are ugly there's a bunch of cars are taking a pounding in this Rick pick your favorite driver under what I'm hearing here we go into the 71 to 24 into the 71 here comes McMurray here comes Harvick marks on the bottom 36 car comes to nine to forty four piles in popular Bonnie nice job to get on the brakes and miss it Mike I just counted 21 cars that went by here without damage which is half the field and Jeff Gordon you heard him say on the radio we're done for the day he's climbing out yeah that car get got hit multiple times pit road is now open let's begin with yesterday's winner David Ragan and dick Berggren they're going to take two tires and put fuel in reagan's car and certainly to win the race here at Talladega you have got to avoid those kinds of problems so far so good for the young 23 year old driver many fire trucks junior three-time winner in the NASCAR Nationwide Series he is in no major chassis adjustments for the lunges four tires to Kristen Brian patty reminding Juan his team is dressed in blue this week the Tom's dual action Chevy they said they'll stick with their plan and go with four do you want to tighter on he said no my car is a rocket David Ragan will win the or no Joey Logano wins the Verizon race off pit road with Reagan Truex Dale Earnhardt jr. and Montoya I think all they did to that 20 car was just put a little bit of fuel in him to fill him up no tire changes on that car it looks like Gerald the big one didn't take until lap eight to unfold [Music] under the first caution of the day of Talladega Alabama for this big crash triggered by Matt Kenseth getting into Jeff gore [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] first caution of the day a little work on Carl Edwards claritin Ford during this one everybody has been on and off pit road at least once Bobby Labonte got a little piece of it looked like he stopped to avoid it but he got a bit and so did Kyle Busch let's go back here are the cars involved in the wreck this is in numerical order for the drivers involved with significant damage some like Casey Cain's car are headed for the garage Matt Kenseth may have come up a little but also it looks like Jeff Gordon came down a little as they got to turn number three yeah it looks like the 71 car way up on the outside there were alongside of Jeff and then it looked like the 17 bumped into the back of the one maybe caused him to move up a tad as Jeff was moving down a tad and then we had a mess I mean you could analyze this wreck till the end of the race it's just Talladega and there's the 17 right behind the one and he comes up as Jeff comes down to make a little room there's not enough room for both of them one driver who I think took the hardest hit of all Clint Boyer is released from the care center in which dick Berggren young he has finished 81 in a row in this series can you get back out on the racetrack things pretty tore out when I got out of it but it's unfortunate you know the BB&T Chevrolet was strong guys worked hard to bring fast cars and you know I don't know what happened is just racing way too hard way too early is everybody okay in the care center I think so okay thank you look at that hard hit into the outside safer barrier for the 33 among a lot of hard hits three of Richard Childress as four cars were involved and likely done for the day yeah the five to 71 to 44 I mean eight they took they took hard hard driver side licks but I think there will be a tremendous amount of work going on in the garage area this early in the race when you look at it that's about half of our teams and drivers in the top 12 and a lot of guys fighting like Mark Martin to get in the top 12 well it didn't get your car fixed and get back out there and make any kind of keep speed up look at all the cars you could be ahead of one more lap would make a big laugh yeah right now we have nine cars that completed only those first few laps as repairs are made to the safer barrier now ride with Jimmie Johnson and see how he gets through here yeah cuz I said all right up in front of him as you see it start to unfold court on you and everybody he's on the apron oh man oh man that was simple troubles and I know talking to Chad canals that was their big concern about that qualifying run was starting back there so close for Jimmie Johnson yet so hard for his teammate Jeff Gordon dick well Jeff Gordon has come out of the care center and the winningest active driver here at Talladega the point leader is there any chance at all you can get that car back out I know these guys are certainly gonna work real hard at it it's time for I think this is same way this Pepsi challenge ended up maybe three so it sure did look good it was driving good and we were having you know a good time there I was actually working well with Matt and getting up to the front through the middle and I'm not really sure what happened I was just kind of cruise along there in the middle Matt got up there I think behind maybe the 11 and he went low and so I was just cruising on up the middle and I don't know if somebody got to be totally show it to you yeah here we go kind of saw it there but I'd like to see a different angle maybe in the truck but you know it's just a different angle yeah yeah Matt went down with the one car and I guess what it was is whoever that was on the inside I don't think you know went there just wasn't enough room when he got underneath Matt Matt came up and I was already there sorry to meet you here we thought we were gonna meet you in victory lane possibly next time yeah and I was hoping he wouldn't remember that 83 race to Steve Byrnes Mike with Mark Martin Mark's just gone and patted his teammates on the back and you had a chance to just watch the replay as your teammate Jeff Gordon was speaking your race car unfortunately is a mess yeah it is and I hate that for our Kellogg's car quest team was really a sweet race car but they they seemed to be experts at building building them so I'm sure they'll come back with another great one and you know we had a great weekend last weekend I'm gonna stop short of complaining and be thankful for the for the good stuff and look forward to climbing back in that thing next weekend Thank You Marc an early exit for at least nine drivers including two from Hendrick Motorsports and three from Richard Childress brain for Drive restart very clear tene laps at the line and where we are and this is a great opportunity for somebody that hadn't won a race this year at the front of the pack right now eight of the tamale that's never won a race exactly for mark tricks jr. net1 car get the push from his ex-teammate Taylor and Hart jr. they'll just drive around Joey Logano gonna drive away these these fellas have been longtime friends they've been roommates they're good buddies they trust each other they like each other and bye-bye they're gone at least for the moment well you get out there like yet but it won't take long - this pack to line up behind them and chase them right back down you just cannot get away out there but I think with the way this thing is played out already this is Dale Earnhardt jr. 's race to lose I think he's got a great opportunity here to cash Truex leads lap 14 let's go back to the care center day crew trying to repair his car believe it or not they're going to get it they think they're going to get it back on the racetrack what did it look like to you out there you know just from the replays is all like it's all I could see you know I saw the 24 go sideways and just looked like 17 I don't know if he actually got told that the 20 just a lot of guys smoke and just kind of a typical way to finish this last month out for the Shelf Enzo so everybody is okay Steve Casey Casey looking there's a lot of torn up race cars here in the garage how bad is your number nine it's pretty good it's pretty torn up I think they'll get it fixed guys work really hard and I'll get our Budweiser dogs back out there but it's pretty torn up and disappointing that early in the race but it's kind of what it is I don't know you just track so smooth there's so much racing room you're running three and four wide simple and then if somebody makes one mistake a lot of cars can go down unfortunately yours was one of them thanks Casey all right it's kinda like dancing it's Kenyatta dancing real simple spy Stefan what it mad me up Jimmy Johnson up with his Hendrick teammate Dale Earnhardt jr. Joey Logano on the inside watching from David Ragan how about last time around you'd think this big crash would settle everybody down never has about David Ragan and Juan Pablo Montoya I have a look at them the 42 and the six with Paul Menard in the 98 one lap ago my goodness swam when the six hit him in the back yeah Reagan gave him a little shot there I guess everyone try to get around Logano in the 24 in man I didn't the way you do it you know the Reagan had a little incident yesterday and he came gave his teammate his shot gotta be a little more careful to them softer tax day [Music] [Applause] I'm getting a little bit of a bump and a boost from Kurt boys in practice Hamlin went out with his rookie teammate Joey Logano who's running third right now and Hamlin shoved Logano all over the racetrack so Joey would know the feel of the catch and release of a car bump drafting with him at these speeds in these cars and since was practice NASCAR told him to knock it off yeah and we were up here just about to jump out of the booth I talked to Denny after that after a practice and he said he talked to joy and joy said it wouldn't bother him a bit I know why NASCAR was upset no I've been watching the outside mile ride with Michael Waltrip in the 55 car just right up through the middle and you know Michael toto saw our tracks on show him speed Friday night he said I know I can win this race on Sunday well he needs to yesterday had a bad day you know he's had a couple of bad weekends here he needs to get it going and this would be a great opportunity 18 of 188 laps complete Martin Truex Jr Dale Earnhardt jr. and Montoya with that push from Hamlin goes back into the lead let's go back to the garage and Steve Mike Jamie McMurray also caught up in the big one in Jamie trouble early there's a lot of damage to that 26 so glad you're okay with doesn't race car the crowd more for season it might be done we're gonna try to go out at least run one lap to see if you can gain a couple of spots but pretty pretty big accident [Music] glad you're alright thanks thank God that's the issue now I mean you can get your car patched up but do we do have a minimum speed and you can't just go out there and ride around in the way you've got to run a relatively fast speed to be able to stay on the racetrack nine cars are in the garage as a result of that crash here comes Kurt Busch too lean and how about Jeff Burton at 31 car he actually had a little bit of damage from that wreck and here he's up there on the inside battling for the lead usually taking a damage race car it'll run pretty good when it's when it's in a draft but when you get out you don't have any significant damage [Applause] [Music] 20 laps complete this time by this is the battle for the lead Jeff Burton Kurt Busch he's trying to gain some advantage and stay out front [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] Jeff Burton leading Denny Hamlin but they're three abreast so how can you tell Fred foots in there as well here's a question from a comma fishel search engine of nascar get the answer now and ask calm and enter the ask.com nascar challenge for a chance to win david prizes the track here at Talladega see when you're a driver you know what you're thinking right now well we can find out all those guys that were going to wreck of already worried about that anymore but there I think there's a couple of guys that may still be anticipating that we're not done yet I've been watching for the last few laps they're kind of back they're just lingering behind this big group and it's Tony Stewart in that 14 car in his teammate Ryan Newman in the 39 I think they're exactly where they want to be right now just kind of hanging out in the back yeah that strategy but man sometime when you're back there you see you know you can see the wreck and that's the problem be better if you could see it in your rear view mirror hey several years ago at Daytona Tony Labonte yeah Tony will excuse me Tony Stewart was up near the front of the pack got a count up in a wreck his teammate Bobby Labonte was hanging out way out behind it they ended up one on top of the other exactly so there there's no safe strategy here well you can't stop these cars that you know they're aggressive break package here you run a pretty small brake package you're not going to stop the car now of the nine cars involved in the crash four are reported out of the race by a NASCAR the rest are reported off-track and under repair we'll update that for you in a bit as some of those drivers want to go out at least make a few laps and move up in the running order now Kyle Busch you saw a little bit of damage to the back of his car where else and what else Matt Mike he had significant cosmetic damage especially in the right rear quarter panel area it was completely ripped open repaired the right front bumper area they really couldn't do much with the bumper in the back you can see how that's still pushed open but butch really hasn't made any comments about the handling of the car twice and practice Mike he went from the back to the front he's trying to do it for a third time here in the race and he they're not gonna worry about that rear bumper being tucked up under there like yet that's actually an advantage you get that rear bumper up out of our fact there was a time when a guys rear bumper fell off intentionally Bobby Allis right he's Daytona 500 bumper cake buffer gate yeah resultant investigation I tell you what here is a guy that I am so happy for today Joe Nemechek he's been one of the Gorgo homers all year long he's made all but two races he's got a little bit of sponsorship about our company that makes portable and here he is running up in the top five this could be an opportunity for him to really cash in today well he said yesterday on our speed qualifying show he said I just love to get a sponsor so we can run all day and put on a good show for somebody that prayer got answered and you know what good things happen to good people he left here Friday after practice and flew all the way back to North Carolina for his daughter for a father-daughter dance and they came back for qualifying got something going on with a 31 like I think Christian knows what it is yeah DW Jeff Burton just came on the radio and said guys I have no everything shut down I've got nothing Scott Miller just said get the battery ready loss of electric power now he and Denny Hamlin were just attending know the crap out of each other could they have knocked something loose that's preventing the electrical system from functioning properly they were hitting each other hard enough you know to knock the battery cable loose or any number of things well they were they were banging on each other you know the one thing and I'm sure Kristin will dig into this a little deeper a lot of teams a lot of cars have a backup battery that you could just go to but it sounds like I think I heard you say I'm back I think he said I got it back well you know what that would have been a good move regardless though with the caution coming out back down to 8 volts on the meter that's not good but this caution amante it's a great benefit for that 31 car it is if it doesn't stop over on the back straightaway piece of debris from this bumping and banging and perhaps from the lap eight crash is up against the wall about 300 yards past the start/finish line we can get the cause we'll be glad to show it to you but it puts us into the second caution flag of the day there it is up against the wall center of your screen right in there yep not sure if that's metal or a big pile of the tape that was on the nose of joe nemechek scarborough and you know who else isn't sure nascar in sure and so they have to throw the caution to make sure as you have witnessed there's no such thing as out of the groove here the entire racetrack top to bottom of the groove I think this comes in a very timely time as far as I think you'll see most everybody come to pit road probably get four fresh tires fill it up with Sunoco race fuel and good to go for a while yeah and some of the cars that maybe still have a little minor damage chance to work on those and trying to get the old Pepsi challenger patch back up but car it's looking a lot better it's got a hood on it didn't when it came in but these guys really have to critique what they're doing here because NASCAR only gives you one opportunity to get the car right out there there you go there's what flew off of that is a big chunk of tape and I believe that is off Joe Nemechek I think sexy Regan Smith the Civic excuse me yeah we saw a lot of damage on his car now what's going on here the battery is located in front of the left rear tire and there so they're changing that battery out it has a quick disconnect you can about do it here normally and not lose a lap pit roads open dick Matt Kenseth's has a clean drive-in he was running in the second position with that caution flag came out upside-down yesterday in the Nationwide race things are going well for him today he's got a little bit of cosmetic damage in the car Steve Kurt Busch says that number two car is good dick put a little tape off the grill four tires for Kurt Busch and a wedge adjustment Matt no now push the team just right side tires and one can of fuel Christa four tires for Jimmie Johnson chap now said how is your car Jimmie said quote it feels like a dream boy Elliott Sadler jumps right out there picking up four positions now Matt Kenseth had a quick stop but he got pinned behind cars coming on to pit road and didn't have a clear lane to get down there in a hurry he killed the in to try to leave the pit box I got him behind [Music] time for an HSE race break NASCAR on Fox live from Talladega 11 liters 15 different lead changes and changing as we speak Kyle Busch moving into the front as we are working through our second caution we already had kind of a mini big one here on lap 7 David Ragan leading at the time in the midst of this pack Matt Kenseth the drivers still trying to figure out exactly what triggered it all but Mark Martin in the five car involved last week's winner Jeff board the points leader in the Pepsi retro car involved quit Boyer whose string of 81 race is running at the finish in jeopardy involved at least 14 cars others Jeff Hammond sustaining some damage and we're taking here along the ride with Jimmie Johnson he on his onboard how close he came to getting caught up in his mess able to get to the bottom of the apron right there and avoid all these cars spinning up above him that's not the way you want to start the race and fixing the safer barrier moments ago as to the car is not the only thing damaged to here at the track never going maybe up to 190 miles per hour so Jeff obviously we have guys like Mark Martin that are not returning to the race a few other cars that will not make their way back in so what does that do you heard Larry say Dale Earnhardt jr. maybe it's his race to hold on to here you've got Tony Stewart you just talked about Jimmie Johnson working through let's talk about the strategy this early that big a wreck well I think right now you've got to get a buddy settled back down those guys are real aggressive early part of the race and from this point on you want to make sure you don't have another one and take yourself out you've got a lot of good guys that are now sidelines like you talked about Jeff Gordon we know he's gonna be multiple laps down Mark Martin's out of the race Jamie McMurray to name a few so you don't want to wind up being one of the victims all of a sudden when you just like to play it safe let's get it on down there toward the end of the race but a lot of these guys are still racing incredibly hard we're taking a look right now at the 99 car of Carl Edwards who's been hanging out at the back of the pack you know kind of playing it safe along with his teammate trying to protect that race car and Jimmie Johnson we talked about how he made it through the wreck currently running age remember a Hendrick has a chance to win their fourth straight race for their fourth different driver and that would mean Dale Earnhardt jr. would have to pull into Victory Lane still looking for that first top-five finish of the year well fortunately for everybody Hendrick Motorsports Dale jr. is definitely wanting to win a race not a better place for him to come to you probably than Talladega he is exceptionally good driver and he knows he's got a good race car so today could wind up being that day he could probably extend that streak make history and get yourself back on track as far as the chase is concerned that wreck looking like survivor meets Amazing Race I know that's on another network but baseball on Fox and tune in this Saturday a number of showdown games 3:30 Eastern 12:30 Pacific but for Saturday baseball 3:00 Eastern 12 Pacific the pre-show and that of course Saturday night it's racing from Richmond as the NASCAR Series shifts there Saturday night to vote for the AT&T fastest pit crew of the Year award from your phone text the car number for the pit crew you think will be the most valuable to fan vote along with Jeff's selection will determine the crew each week so your vote counts vote each week at the AT&T fastest pit crew of the Year award we may see more than that big one a long way to go here let's head back upstairs to Darrell Larry and Mike thanks Chris 32 laps complete we'll get the green flag next time bye we still have 34 cars on the lead lap AJ Allmendinger 22 laps behind and nine cars either off track or out of the race the ones that are still trying to be repaired from that lap eight crash our Jeff Gordon Clint Bowyer Kevin Harvick and Kasey Kahne they waved off the restart we'll look for it next time bye you're watching NASCAR on Fox [Music] you know what I don't like and this it's just me piece of debris all you do is right out there and pick it up we've been riding around in coaching how many laps now five was one piece of debris there I'm with Darrell well I'm with the guys right you said working on the wall - okay yeah boy fires hit was was the hardest my gosh I mean Jeff hit it hit it twice hit at a bunch but okay alrighty let's go Bob Ellis yeah I just noticed that yeah I guess he's an inspector today I think I think he works the garage area a lot on race day when they see my ads running the day before it makes sense 35 laps complete in Talladega green flag Kyle Busch Elliott Sadler Michael Waltrip Matt Kenseth and Martin Truex the front five see michael waltrip there in the 55 car one of the cars that elected to go with just two right-side tires like a lot of the guys at the front of the pack right now in that last caution a lot more damage on that 18 car and I thought there was a whole right side of a tip over the right rear tires all taped up I don't guess I don't think it's gonna cause him any problem but certainly not as good as they'd like her to be Bush holds the lead waltrip second mostly three-wide off in a turn one just looks like that bottom line is moving right now with Kyle Busch taking him alone yeah David Stremme he was trying to bring that outside lane to them in his number 12 but even with help from his teammate Kurt Busch they're not gaining ground and Mike he's just I'm sure he's looking his route your rear view mirror saying what are we going to run into me today cuz he got run into yesterday and turned around twice hit Phoenix last week he just needs to get through this race with no problems how about that 82 car on the bottom there remember what looked like a total disaster for that group where they were penalized a lap before the green flag came out he was so far behind the big wreck he didn't get involved and then he got the free pass back on the lead lap and now he's up there running in the top ten Scott Speedman Kyle Busch David Ragan Dale Earnhardt jr. now running third and coming to the front NASCAR Sprint Cup racing on Fox is sponsored by Budweiser Reid for the perfect balance of flavor and refreshment Budweiser the great American lager [Music] 37 of 188 laps this time by and still the three-wide racing at 190 miles an hour continues as it has since the green flag two cautions the big one at lap eight and a quick debris caution at lap 30 you know you just can't help but do this you know you would like to get in single file you'd like to you know settle down but you can't you got a fast car you got a car that can run up front you got to find a way to get it there and and everybody's in pretty equal cars so you end up with them wadded up like this unless you're like maybe Carl Edwards or somebody and this is the same strategy that I think Larry if I recall there goes call it the back of the field I think that's the same strategy he used here last year but then late in the race when he decided was time to go is when he actually got in wreck with his teammate Greg Biffle a lot of the Roush Fenway cars did that then a lot of the Roush Fenway cars were involved in that big red one of the cars that's been involved in that crash and had some nose damage a report from dick Berggren Tony Stewart is one of those he came in as one of the pre-race favourites Mike having lit them laughs in both races here last year winning the second of the two and the crew has been working on a piece of sheet metal that they hope to attach to the nose of stewards car on the next pit stop I just believe that group of cars running right there Ryan Newman Tony Stewart Greg Biffle I don't think we've heard the last of them they're gonna let this thing wind down for a while how about I tell you I like those two young guys on the inside I like Kyle and I like David Ragan and he got in right behind him you got Sam Hornish but I think that I think these young guys this kind of racing is just what they love and just remember dick Berggren Berggren told us early in the race Sam Hornish Jr pretty sick he actually has Travis Kvapil standing in the pits in case he needs relief Kyle Busch holds the lead here comes Jimmie Johnson with help from Stremme II let's check with Matt Busch told his team we're gonna change our strategy we were gonna ride in the back to stay out of the the big one he goes we got involved in it let's go to the front it's much safer up there it's been the Kyle Busch Comedy Tour Mike earlier in the race he said jokingly please pass on to the 14 do I need to buy him some new brakes the next time I go to a plate race because he's been pushing me pretty hard they all did it in a joking way but he also said look we're out front the thing we need to do in the next time in we need to add some tape to the grill because we are running way too cool that'll help us gain more speed whoa that's bad news if you're a competitor he's leading the race here with and he can add a little tape and that is instant speed maybe baby I don't make you pickup tape on the nose where where the air goes in to the cool water in the radiator it really reduces the drag straightaway speed on these things last year Kyle Busch and Tony Stewart were teammates at Joe Gibbs Racing and they won both the restrictor plate races at Talladega one apiece at 82 car Larry Scott speed second on the inside so he'll be one of our Toyota top performers of the moment [Music] I mean it was obvious Scott speed had a fast race car he qualified eighth but going back to the beginning of the race they came to pit road they worked on the car which you cannot do before the green flag of an impound race and boy Timmy Johnson that fourth car he had his hands folded in the Auburn thing I think junior may have given him a lot a little bit of a love tap [Music] but Darryl these last 10 laps that inside lane has been impossible to beat you can't dislodge Kyle Busch from the lead as long as he hugs that double yellow line I think that tells you he's got a pretty fast car when you can do that toe everybody round on the bottom like that it is you got a pretty fast car here comes Montoya the pole sitter and the right of your picture okay the left the right he's out there somewhere in the middle with Brian Vickers but you know when I look at that inside line right now the cars that are lined up behind Kyle Busch we talked about Scott Speed two rookie an 82 car how about Brad Keselowski drives for Dale Earnhardt jr. in the Nationwide Series we feel like somewhere my own trouble guys into travel Michael Waltrip Michael cut down in front of somebody I think he's gonna save it save it brother save it he did Brian save it cautions out slow down don't tear your fenders off that was unbelievable he got here driving right there he thought he had to let's see who it was he thought he had cleared he's gonna cut down here in front of some Marcos Ambrose yeah his teammate goodness graces his teammate that old big blue wall was coming up a hurry though wasn't it but I see tsehai back he's sliding sliding sliding he's headed for the wall he backs off the brakes car bites and he saved it now that area toward that inside wall that I mean is he grass this cars gonna scar wild ride it would have been gone normally my coming it would hit that inside wall and just killed it but he is driving and driving that baby that's the finest piece of driving I've seen your brother do since he won Daytona thank you you're right what a save twice you know what a lot of times I think people would say he was just hanging on I'm gonna tell you what he lets ride with him there's Ambrose the 47 to the left Sydow inside my goodness and then you say oh look at him go Mikey go oh what a save what a save hold on watch out down what yeah that'll put your dumb anything man hours old that'll put your stomach in your mouth faster than the Simpsons ride at Universal Studios I promise oh gosh all he'll really need is four fresh tires yeah and get back here without tearing it you know without anything one of the tires flying apart tearing the car up he's gonna be fine so Michael Waltrip's Wild Ride puts us into the third caution of the day at lap 44 yeah he might want to get a blinker on that thing next time gonna turn down like that tires were flat as you would expect hoody bar through the crew chief here's another question from ask calm easy one you can get the answer now a task calm and enter the ask calm NASCAR challenge at the official search engine of NASCAR so Michael gets four fresh tires and he will stay on the lead lap unbelievable you know that's one thing I'll say about this car yesterday you think about that Co is that car yesterday it's one of like the old cup cars word in the past that car there today that thing didn't try to turn over it stay planted on the ground quite a ride for Michael Waltrip pit road is open dick Berggren well we expected Scott Speed was going to come in for a pit stop Mike and I was down there the car is okay but his foot has gotten incredibly hot Charlie Brock the car chief was ready to go into it pit stops how first service is already completed slight chassis adjustment just one can of fuel the same for Dale Earnhardt jr. Christa Jimmie Johnson takes fuel only they had tires up on the wall they did not take them he said he responds well to the push jimmie johnson few only we're seeing all types of strategies on pit road as we anticipated so Scott speed did not stop and he becomes one of 13 different leaders of this race and the Aaron's 499 Michael Walter my wild ride great save Darryl hey Mike is TW got a copy buddy that we had him Mike is TW got a copy bud do you have any idea how close you came to those two walls I know you I know you didn't close your eyes cuz we could tell you were driving that thing even when she's in a 4-wheel slide great job all right we'll keep the camera isolated on you've known going green with our clear and clear to drive restart get clear it and clear get back to feeling like yourself again Kyle Busch getting back to feeling like leading again Brad Keselowski Jimmie Johnson Casey Mears Dale Earnhardt jr. the front five and we have 33 cars on the lead lap Jeff Burton who had led this race you saw him earlier on pit road after he led changing the battery they've been back to pit road the last two cautions with the hood up he's now two laps down in the 31 Krista yeah Jeff Burton was just hanging on for dear life we saw him make that battery change back on lap 29 they looked at the hood again to change the alternator and they found an alternator belt interestly on the O 7 car back in the garage mirrors they thought it might belong to the 31 so they got another alternator ready they changed it Jeff said it must have worked because his bolts were up to 14 so Jeff said I don't know if it's the right decision but it's definitely working for now well the good news for him is he would be the first car to get the free pass even though he's two laps down because we do not have a car one lap down right now I tell you what we're gonna have a couple of cars it might be in trouble here because they just passed below the yellow line in advance their position Brian Vickers and the 11 of Denny ham yeah they jumped around the o9 thereof Brad Keselowski and not Brad Keselowski here you go watch is that it that is Brad right yeah they jumped by him because he was real slow in the middle there but I guess we're back up front I don't guess there's a foul there well NASCAR is reviewing well jr. going at the lead roar you hear his head 88 car he has taken her to the front being pushed by Martin Truex Jr into one and they are on their feet in Talladega and tricks his teammate pole-sitter juan Montoya right with them then rookie Joey Logano and series champ Jimmie Johnson with that one in the 42 they are bad fast I tell you they can bet they can boogie and they've been fast ever since these cars unloaded on Friday and no surprise Dale Earnhardt incorporated even though it's now merged with Chip Ganassi Dei has a great history of bringing RocketSled restrictor play cars well in in Darrell and I were talking yesterday during qualifying remember you have the Earnhardt Childress engines that supply the engine for Dei with Ganassi and Childress and their stuff all the cars seem like they were just really running here yeah this the best I've seen the children's cars and so the Dei cars of the former Dei cars run the Ganassi cars forty eight laps complete this time by Dale Earnhardt jr. in the lead Jeff Hammond can tell us more in the four cutaway car about what they did to help Jeff Burton Mike what was going on was we saw him come down pit road and they changed the battery well the battery is basically a storage spark compartment far as the alternator and energy is concerned already traction on a racecar what they were having problems with it was this unit right here the alternator itself and they were talking about the belt here's the belt is away it's locating the way it runs around the water pump and has run off the engine itself but as the alternator is not putting out any kind of voltage then the battery can't store it I mean the battery only helps shield for a little while if the alternator quits and that's what they had to work on to keep that grace cart running the battery was not going to be able to sustain it they run a small battery doesn't have a lot of reserve power so they had to work on that thanks Jeff Kenseth leads a lap and Darryl this looks like the last lap at Talladega not just the 50th left look at these guys back in here I mean we're talking four wide back in this pack back here that's just almost an ingredient for big-time disaster look at him there for wide dice and slicing some time was the two was up front leading the race what happened to him burns Darrell they were on borrowed time they got some accident from that first big wreck they you're right it wasn't that long ago they were leading the race the entire rear bumper panel is gone it's back in the garage there's bear bond on this number two car and she's just riding around right now the whole rear bumper is gone as you can see right there well as long as he can stay back there in the draft his car didn't really realize it's that beat-up it's just it would be hard to be up front with the car like that and that tubing that's the functional part of that bumper it's intact so NASCAR's not requiring to come in and and make a repair well like I said earlier and I'm not just repeat myself but that rear bumper being off there doesn't hurt a thing now the front bumper being off that's a different story Kenseth in yellow trying to hold the lead against Earnhardt on the outside with Hamlin tell you what when I look at Matt Kenseth leading this race I think that just says so much for these race car drivers you saw it earlier in the race remember in yesterday's Nationwide Series race he was barrel rolling and flipping down the back straightaway and here he is leading the race here today he's leading it right until now jr. forges ahead on the outside well they been swapping the lead back and forth for about the last two laps Dale Earnhardt jr. keeps getting the push from Denny Hamlin in the 11 car you know you talk about Matt Kenseth I mean the race drivers the race car drivers mentality is that was yesterday right tomorrow I don't worry about tomorrow I'm living a present right now 52 laps complete Dale Earnhardt jr. is the leader 20 lead changes so far in Talladega NASCAR's Sprint Cup race Liggett sponsored by Pepsi try the refreshingly retro taste of Pepsi throwback made with natural sugar in stores now by NAPA Auto Parts Napa get the good stuff by Taco Bell think outside the bus and by AT&T your world delivered 56 laps complete in the fastest Speedway on earth Jeff Gordon may be getting ready to come back into the race that be good time to start playing race day payday presented by Pepsi each race you could win the same cash prize as the winning driver go to Pepsi racing dot-com for all rules and details and make your picks for next week's race meanwhile the complexion of this race has really changed once Dale jr. got out front he became the Pied Piper and instead of three wide all the way around the track it is single-file all the way around the track Larry did not miss something today some signal go out that they see dog line up and first time this has happened though no I don't know but who made this guy I guess the 88 huh well his teammate Jimmie Johnson riding there in seventh let's check it his pit Christa well Mike and my section here on pit road I was actually in Jimmie Johnson's pit I saw all the crew guys throw on the helmets quickly I switched over to jimmie johnson's radio channel and her chat can now say Jimmy I'm saying right now something in the corners is loose slowly getting worse in Maryland straight away yes that can remind to be an old wheel but I just don't down and we're about 30 laps away from what would be a green flag pit stop and I know Chad can oust one of the big things on his radar this past week is they've had some problems on pit road with pit stops and I know he's been definitely shaking and bacon and moving things around it with his pit crew boy this is no place I not at any place it but definitely don't want to mess around with a loose wheel here you'll be in the wall 14 different leaders so far don't worry if your favorite driver hasn't led because when Kyle Busch won here last spring he didn't lead until very late in the race for single-file let's crank it up daga style [Music] [Music] Oh trouble trouble off turn causal care coach same thing it did Mikey did another great say who call is out right down the bottom dang good job hurt man any contact whatsoever I think as he just said got a little high here he is right back in here it's a little high coming through here gets a little close to the outside wall just came around on it goodbye right to Mikey look at his same tracks Mikey - and then it's like no I don't wanna go that way you know how fast he was going through there one hundred ninety mile there drive drive drive hang on hang on great gas spin whoo I feel like this caution is the biggest break for we just had heard the report as Jimmie Johnson Chad Knaus that 48 car thinking that he had a loose wheel Jeff Burton will get the free pass to solve his electrical problem he went three laps down that'll be two laps down now and you see the flat on the left front of Kurt Busch's car and also in that last shot you saw Kevin Harvick's car being worked on on pit road car Harvick is the first of the drivers involved in the lap eight crash to return to the racetrack he's 48 laps down and now Kasey Kahne in the 9 car just came back out of the garage area riding with him here he's 53 laps down just hoping attrition will push him further up in the finishing order the way the day is gone and with the history of this track they could be a top 20 car before it's over right three of our rookie contenders are in the race max Pappas Scott Speed and Joey Logano in the home depot number 20 in today's rookie file Joey went to visit the local Home Depot over in pail city on Thursday mixing paint at the Home Depot is a little different than mixing paint out here on the Speedway at Talladega right now Logano is 11th Scott Speed 31st max Pappas 32nd they are all on the lead lap yeah he mixes it at the Home Depot he they trade paint out here that's it but he had a great run yesterday in a Nationwide Series race had a good top-five finish pit roads open and we're going to have a lot of takers Bergy now veteran crew chief Jimmy fennec has told his driver and his crew that even though others will take two tires he is going to take four tires to this car Reagan having a very good day today [Music] grip grip no issue for Martin Truex Jr or Dale Earnhardt jr. right side tires only for both teams NASCAR has allowed for the extra man tear off the call for Denny Hamlin is four tires meanwhile right in front Jimmie Johnson checking out said if you see anything loose looking for that loose wheel carriers give me a sign right now they're putting four tires on the 48 he took feel only on his last stop there was no question they had no choice if they want to make sure you get that vibration if it was a loose wheel is go with 462 laps complete just about one-third distance here in Talladega [Music] that looks like you would have to wait on the other nine well that's not gonna go over good now the o nine he can't he's a block yo 9 couldn't get out he couldn't get out either what a mess hmm what a flipping mess I said what the heck let me get down office but let me go get me a name let me go over there no ok I don't trust you boys no no I see you I thought he's going to well he's actually looking to see if he's showing signs of a loose wheel it's a short track check your in motion was been grass turned 3 digger see you next Saturday bunker with us next Saturday night click warrior who won in Richmond last year involved in the wreck currently out of the race here at Talladega Jeff Hammond Elliott Sadler involved through that melee of at least 14 cars he has led 12 straight Talladega races and he's up near the front yeah and matter of fact he comes off pit road he's second right now but very impressive I guess you might say adjustment by Elliott Sadler cause he was backwards on lap 7 in that crash moments ago Jimmie Johnson on the pits so more on that not necessarily a loose wheel but right now we're getting ready to go green let's rejoin Darrell area thanks Chris Chris Krista reported no elongated what nut holes in the wheels and no blisters on the tires for Jimmie Johnson so back under green earlier Brian Vickers had two wheels below the yellow line his red passed they've issued a warning to vicars but no penalty his teammate Reed Sorenson and the 43 cars running fifth both of those teams had great runs in the Daytona 500 a little finish though he made those cars had to change engines to start this race at the Richard Petty much and that's a good call by NASCAR because Vickers in the 11 car we're coming up on the Keselowski 10 mile an hour 20 may be common sense called yes it works thirty-three drivers on the lead lap Martin Truex the Daytona 500 call sitter hauls them around this two point six miles Superspeedway you've seen out there how you basically run wide around this racetrack the MA or in the RPM never changes and normally this right here doesn't change a whole lot it's going wild for the hundred percent club but if you watch that break by now if you're drafting behind someone and you you'll drag that brake a little bit and I'm not so sure that may not be Jimmie Johnson's problem you drag those brakes in the corners sometime to keep from run over the guy in front of you you'll warp that brake rotor a little bit create a little vibration kind of worrisome and the reason you don't roll out the throttle is because with this carburetor restrictor plate we run here you'll lose momentum yeah you just let your left you you got your right foot planted to the firewall you just use that left foot to tap that break a little bit there's a lot of room here at Talladega the infield is huge the grandstands are the racetrack is wide and the pit road boxes are plenty large enough until something like this happens here's Jimmy Johnson coming in he's got to get around Denny Hamlin's crew and then brad keselowski parks in such a way the Johnson's not going to be able exit there's access in front of Brad Keselowski the o.9 car that had him all but blocked in you can see Denny Hamlin just barely got out now just about the time the overnight finishes their stop they start to back the 48 car and you see they don't know it had to stop Jimmy Johnson go out kezelowski was booked in Bala Bonnie that's called 28 cars on pit road at one time but the good thing about here is it's not as costly as it is is some tracks where you can't pass the other thing is Chad usually pretty good about finding a spot on pit road follow its own to 18 Kyle Busch in trouble on the back straightaway let's go say about Chad his pit boxes he looks around until neither side of me he usually tries to find somebody he thinks might go a lap down and open that box up in front but what hurt him is you pick them by how you qualified qualifies 36 heap had to take what was left himself but the Kyle Busch getting a getting 80 100 rpm and finding a you know place in line to the outside line not sure why would fall back but maybe he maybe wants to get to the rear and ride a while now the RPMs coming back up oh yeah but he had slowed considerably so you see some like it happened in can only it can only be one or two things maybe add an ignition from headed switch boxes boss fire just for both momentarily or maybe he decided he want to fall back and see how his car would come to traffic I mean look at that right there how about 201 miles per hour hit it at the end the back straightaway Matt could he have a problem nasty Vatican says nothing was repeated to him it looks to him that the 18 of Kyle Busch who talked about it earlier that's ex absolutely what he did well he's picked up his older brother Kurt and runs along how about our outside pole sitter Greg Biffle there's the three M for ninth place spike for a guy who has 14 career wins Greg Biffle has never finished in the top 10 in Talladega he said earlier this week I've been wrecked runner to the front I've been rented in the back the only place not to get wrecked his pit road and you can't win the race from there right now he is playing a conservative Mike just taking his time staying out of trouble [Music] that's what he was trying to do in the fall race he might be racing to this debate Truex Adler Earnhardt Sorensen and Hamlin are the front five there you see Elliott Sadler trying to bit of a push and Earnhardt's got a little bit of cushion on both ends Matt and Mike doing something DW is talked a lot about when he was driving that's wanting to know about history's jr. told 22 and the last stop why more people aren't using the bottom when they do is that maybe the better place he felt like for him [Music] great Sorenson 17 on the bottom you know the easiest thing in the world to do here particularly you know nobody really wants to run the bottom is ride around the top of this joint right up next to the wall it's pretty easy no pressure a lot of laps down [Music] used to say Martin Truex Jr from Bayonne New Jersey a pole sitter from the Daytona 500 out in front here at Talladega [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] 75 laps completed Talladega it's more Pablo Montoya getting an assist from Dale Earnhardt jr. Martin Truex got shuffled back a bit without any drafting help and he's now on the outside third in line back about eighth place this is from Denny Hamlin looking back at Matt Kenseth from the front of the pack when you look at right at the back of this group in fact he just made a move to the outside Jeff Burton at 31 car this crew better hope he doesn't get those next two laps back because he will be a player by then they look at him just turn it down with a little bit of help from David Reutimann in the double zero car he's actually trying to get one of his laps back by driving to the front of the pack definitely got the car fixed running right now Martin Truex was leading handily when we went to break Elliott Sadler wasn't putting much pressure on him and that was frustrating Dale jr. another one into the one they push move it he this act like think you should try and do so jr. took matters into his own hands jumped out of line and went with the pack on the bottom say what jr. knew was he was holding back a whole lot any kid forgot while ago so that's why it was asking want one Eliot Buzzelli at that slow and when it all shook out Montoya who junior dropped down to draft with ended up with the lead if you look in the middle of the screen right here remember that guy that we said something wrong whose car he fell to the back at maybe he's got a fish changing our way around 18 their front another fellow who's in second place right now David Stremme II he may have a problem Steve yeah he sure made Mike he just told one McAuley he said I feel like I've got a loose wheel Roy said keep me informed dick Berggren they updated you early in the broadcast about Sam Hornish who had done a career best qualifying effort of fourth year but was until last night Hornish in the car is running so fast he's telling his team but he feels just fine Travis Kvapil on the Box in his uniform you may not get a chance to race because I want to tell you these are give me race cars because I have seen people sideways look like they were going to spin out and they say the car and keep right on digging okay mom had two great examples right here in front of us with Michael Waltrip it's amazing they're doing it in the corners you know what happens when you do that and you do it too much too getting away with it right now Montoya coming back on the outside was the leader junior took it away but Montoya is flying back to the front Christa with a lot of help from Jimmie Johnson that's right Mike and Juan Pablo Montoya has always been good at Talladega he said he was surprised with the pole thought his car was about a top five in qualifying he wasn't really even following it as hard as surfing equipment I guess this is a little like windsurfing you wait for that big wave I said on your board wait for it to come in and then just drop into that thirty or thirty quarter suddenly one has no friends what happened what was amazing talk about windsurfing that push that Jimmy Johnson gave him down into turn three the last time was over two hundred and three miles per hour but around him and left him and now Juan is running 15 now dropped him like a hot potato go it's like I'll work with you as long as you can help me I'll help you there's a lot of guys right now I guarantee you and the cow just made me realize that bush in the middle right there's you playing around a little bit how far back do I get and then how quickly can I get back to the front Dale earnheardt used to be the master of that he'd fall all the way the back of the pack back for later on in the race couple of those fellas though are in danger of losing the lead draft and they include junior was in danger of losing the whole race card not saying he was wobbling down into turn one I thought he was getting just a little bit braver all the time they've always been bold now they're getting brain-o Kozlowski took Junior right down below together and he couldn't get loose thank you right Darryl now junior blended back up right about where he was running but the James Finch car for Keselowski which is a car purchased from Hendrick Motorsports powerplant at all now slips to the back of the pack but that car has been kind of slow earlier they ran up holding and didn't have anywhere to go here's another look at what happened when Dale jr. and Brad Keselowski got together I believe you see they kind of both go the same way you got saying without the 12 there's nothing in front of that oh nice [Applause] like the duckies they get excited you know how I hear good you're good [Music] [Applause] [Music] three on the right Dale Earnhardt jr. there below the bumper but I don't think that's in front of really no grill opening right now I don't think there's any danger probably a piece of tape er it's something very light nur we started turning in the air and the backstretch area it's a tear off like a windshield - yeah that's off from one of the cars it's not gonna hurt a think right there [Music] get up close to somebody and the Airwolf will take that right off Sam Hornish Jr 277 car he gets how about Hornish had his best career finished last week has his best career start in NASCAR right here now he's got a chance to lead this race man and Mike one reason why Dale jr. a few laps ago was ducking down to the inside and then also trying to get some clean air his water temperature had climbed just above 260 degrees he told his team that's what I've been trying to move around trying to get it to come back down in the temperature here comes Hornish he's got the ball in this mirror these cars can run that hot 260 degrees is not a problem as long as it doesn't start shooting water out pressure the system and his water well the radiators now that's not a problem Hamlin's got to run on the outside yeah Denny Hamlin was getting quite a push from that 31 car of Jeff Burton and David Reutimann that double 0 car [Music] Hornish did get credit for leading that lap there's twenty nine lead changes among 17 drivers so far we're not even halfway [Music] it hit the star at the rear of the field actually blew an engine qualified boy Timmy Johnson 277 into the turn so fast we got a caution guys yep debris on the back straightaway they went into third turns and fast hornish's wash tips from east track now Stremme II was trying to get to Hornish the 12 in the 77 our teammates Roger Penske Kurt Busch what a great run for sudden Sam here at Talladega this will be the fifth caution flag of the day [Music] [Music] [Music] time we've already had 30 lead changes in this race that's the most of any race this year we have a long way to go the big one already hit on the last seven Matt Kenseth who's worked himself back a bit to get points leader Jeff Gordon at least 14 karts and ball Duncan gets back of the race Mark Martin involved there look at the onboard view of Jimmie Johnson somehow surviving through this we've had some tremendous saves already in this race we get Michael Waltrip somehow hang it on at Kurt Busch someday with in his car to start with but with a spectacular saying and right now we have always seen one driver as chat canals have a little fun cooling off temperature in the 80s only two drivers have had consecutive lap leads and that's Kyle Busch who will have 13 straight laps so lead changes guys moving from front to the back how about this recent round of pit stops under our fifth caution well right now you've seen some of the guys that have been running to the back of the pack some of electives coming at gas they're back at the head of the pack like Joe Nemechek and be generous what he's doing he's at the front of the pack right now but guys like Elliott Sadler all of a sudden you see the 18 car of Kyle Busch never work on these race car trying to get it better he make him repairs that rear bumper I think he's probably feeling like I'm giving up a little bit aerodynamically and they're trying to figure out whether they pull it off or what they've got to do to get it to work this car can run up front like he really wants it to but the key thing is right now I will remind you one thing we talked about the beginning this race you've got to be thinking you got to have some patience and you got to be lucky and so far I think you seen examples of all three of those why Kyle Busch in Saturday's race remember he would drop to the back of the but got back up in front in a matter of time didn't mean much and I want to ask you about the strategy of Carl Edwards for example it seems like he's been hanging back is that strategy is he figuring things out on his car I really think he's trying to play a little bit on a patient game right now to see whether or not it'll pay off at the end trying to conserve keep that car as clean as possible and then when it gets later in the race week Chris we still got a hundred and one laps to go in this race I mean you still have to figure out what you're going to do next Carl hoping for that claritin clear restart which we'll get to in a moment but today NASCAR fans celebrated KFC's new grilled chicken launch by attempting to break the world record for the largest chicken dance performance that's Colonel Sanders not been all Tom who works early Hollywood Hotel and don't forget to get a free piece of grilled chicken tomorrow and taste the unfried side I take like a trade on one of our ace cameramen who likes to eat a food with Drano he'll dance the chicken dance and then we set the world record I believe we did okay you we needed you one more oh that was awesome do it here I'm gonna have something about you know but people get confused I'm talking about you I'm chicken too chicken to dance that you turned it into like a bad wedding reception today NASCAR fans can vote at AT&T Tex the car number for the pit crew you think will be the fastest and most valuable raise two to five eight is where you text the ACNC fast his pit crew of the Year award delivered by AT&T the nation's fastest 3G network Kyle Busch has led the most laps so far followed by Dale Earnhardt jr. Mike Paul Menard has become the 19th different leader of this race he did it by not pitting on this caution he was last on pit road 24 laps ago we're back under green he says that this guy really is getting better and better and he really enjoy working with 3/4 his crew chief about every 20 to 30 laps and that's what Larry Carter is banking on because you don't want to have to make a green flag stop here by yourself or you'll get left in a hurry we talked about Elliott Sadler being right up there with Denny Hamlin how about Joey Logano the rookie after a strong run yesterday in the Nationwide Series race and David Reutimann's up in the top five as well yeah you know I'm not really surprised about because we watched him all in practice had a good solid race car he's been riding the bottom and even in this race today that car looks pretty good for for this young rookie and I think we need to remember that with Tony Stewart won the race the last time we were here to fall last year [Music] dick Berggren Greg Zipadelli is do not attempt to lead this race why he's a rookie and they would just blow on by him he has been told to stay in the second position or further back and push follow learn all day I don't thinks if he said that he had to do that at the very end of the race mightily hit the wall every time we went out on the racetrack Daytona is intimidating it really it's a hard racetrack this place here it's really quite easy to drive focus more on what you're doing behind the wheel I like what Logano is doing right now Darrell he's not on the bottom but he's picked up his mentor Hamlin wherever Denny goes Joey follows and the two of them are able to break out front just a bit remember practice we were talking about to 2011 the lemon was wearing the back 20 out maybe says I'm gonna repay you a little bit here brother you know Tony Stewart may have won the race when we were here in the fall but the guy that thought he won the race look at Emma on the bottom right behind Casey Mears that o7 car Regan Smith in the 78 he actually has a bunch of damage to that car from that wreck earlier in the race and had some damage to the front end and here he's banking up there in the top ten and the way Smith lost the race he was driving for a different team than he is now that double yellow line means no passing he went below the line Stewart came down to the line to block NASCAR ruled that Smith had made an illegal past and instead of putting into second where he was running at the time the rule required them to put him to the end of the lead lap and Tony Stewart got the win the NASCAR officials take great pains to explain this rule in every drivers meeting at Daytona and Talladega if you go below the yellow line the double line in advance your position you will be penalized if you are forced down below the yellow line you'll still be penalized but NASCAR will consider also penalizing the car that forces you down there I tell you what speaking of bottom line the juicy Jimmie Johnson in the 48 down in turn one and two he went from the top of the bottom and Sam Hornish Jr 277 said I'm going with him right down there yeah that last pit stop don't know if it's healthy for her knee now Logano hung out to dry the rookie is in the high groove all by himself now he's going to get a little drafting help from the back but he is out of this lead pack I'm gonna tell you what whoo he's getting help from is a car that this group they do not want to see him get this next lap back Jeff Burton at 31 three laps down because bottle under problems he's got next caution he'll be back on the lead lap there we saw the 18 bunch working on the rear bumper now if that rear bumper cover was off of that race car that rear bumper cover is that's why they came back on it did they get it fixed Matt DW the biggest issue they had the rear bumper bar was sticking out there too they were concerned that other cars tuck up and draft and push them because they thought they might and then the third cars they worked push that bar back in put some bear bond on the back and sent him back out in what Darrell's talking about the reason you would love to have that [Music] when you let air out from underneath the car it makes the car run faster it reduces the drag of the car that's time bye crash took out a lot of good cars at the beginning it hadn't affected this race one bit matter-of-factly public they probably don't remember who's in it at this point they just worried about the cars at their race it went right now well we have 33 cars on the lead lap and they're roughly about 2 and 1/2 seconds separate those 33 nobody's really lost the graph you crowd around the back like Lucy called Edwards do all day and pull back up when you want to now Denny Hamlin leads the halfway lap in the FedEx number 11 Toyota we've got a new challenge for all of you watching it's called NASCAR know it all and you'll find it at foxsports.com keywords know-it-all answer our questions regarding next week's rates and the winner will be announced the following week in Darlington so if you know it all will make you famous at foxsports.com keywords know Denny Hamlin trying to win a third race in a row with three different drivers here at Talladega for coach Joe Gibbs [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] 99 laps in at Talladega 89 to go on lap eight nine cars were taken out in a crash five of which have returned to the racetrack so out for the day David Gilliland Scott Riggs Jamie McMurray Clint Bowyer That Ends boys running at the finish streak of what 81 races I think their exes he's off-track but not officially out of the race coming back on track with major damage AJ Allmendinger Kasey Kahne yet I have that big of a crash to only have actually four cars out five cars out one in the garage area it's amazing Larry what do you do when you go back out there your car's all wrecked up and you're 50 laps down or 40 laps down if you get back out on the racetrack go around around by yourself so you might go have a little it's like the vanish and yeah the 44 the nine they're about three for four seconds off the leaders pace but they're bumped rafting along trying to make sure they stay above minimum speed so NASCAR won't send them to the garage they're pushing each other and I'm Larry and I've been watching they just laughing because some laps they never let go of each other this is a battle for position right now yes 37th place we never show the battles at the back of the pack here you are they are both 56 laps down racing hard for position and if Jeff Gordon passes Kevin Harvick you know what he gets he gets the point lead back right now he would be a second to either Jimmie Johnson or Kurt Busch looks to me like it's a bad weekend to have a yellow car 100 mark Denny Hamlin that 11 car leading David Reutimann David Stremme II Brian Vickers and Reed Sorenson well we're gonna have a shake-up in the points who's the point lead to Kurt Busch for Jimmie Johnson and Jeff Burton will likely fall out of the top dozen Terminator Salvation presents our top 12 these are the drivers right now would be qualified for the chase based on the way they are running Montoya they're an 11th made the big jump this week's who's up for positions in East Asia Terminator Salvation opens May 21st based on the way these guys have been racing Mike I don't know that we will worry about that racers don't worry Oh Saturday night under the lights of star race you know what the easy way I'll say the easy way but that's win Talladega something that those guys could accomplish here if you could win here today mentioning the all-star race that is certainly a race for the fans this is a race for the fans also Denny Hamlin putting on a great show right now he's very quiet on the radio Curtis Markham a spot which line to taken right now Steve Burns the FedEx freak Toyota Christa David Stremme II doing a fine job he's in the third position remember before the pit stop he'd been complaining of a loose wheel after the stop McCauley David said I feel that vibration again and I feel like it's in the motor I feel it with my feet could be an exhaust problem the exhaust system runs right through the right side of the car and sometimes my header crack in it it'll make you because as I mentioned he lost an Indy qualifying yesterday Denny Hamlin David Reutimann David Stremme Eidos are your leaders 104 laps into the Aaron's 499 [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] May 1997 mark Barton one the fastest 500-mile NASCAR race in history that's his Valvoline Ford number six out in front the race was postponed two weeks to the weather issues when the cars came back they came back fast competing Dale Earnhardt in two hours 39 minutes caution free average speed a hundred eighty-eight miles an hour twenty six lead changes mark led the final 31 laps you want to win a Ford Fusion log on to we race minutes without an airplane and in a car you know matt kenseth has been starting up front on research tenants ripping his way back into the middle of the pack dick Berggren what's up with a 17 he's up to 10th one tenth place is coming back forward now well he'd like to have somebody who wants to run the bottom with him like he is just not able to run the top where a lot of the people are and he just hasn't found a friend that he'll run fast enough to run toward the bottom so his crew chief through quicken Stafford just said they're kind of hanging out [Music] now we're within about 20 [Music] Dale Earnhardt jr. in that 88 car looks like he's found a friend with Jeff Burton the 31 Jeff is steel push Earnhardt jr. look at the push they're getting through turn one and two you can see it right there 197 miles per hour has a hood pin out remember they had to go underneath the hood to change that alternator I saw that Larry but it's it there's something about this race car and two cars when they get hooked up now we just talked about Lynn Kenseth hanging out at the back look at Matt Kenseth he is third but look at these two cars here how they just can open that gap up what if this was the last lap of the race you'd be pretty happy about that look at that it was about six or seven miles per hour faster than that I don't think he has a hood pin out I think they must have Oh guys it back they had one in their hand and they just slid it in there and left the other one I let it dangle that dangled on the has been hanging out at the back of the back is Carl Edwards just kind of been within a whiff of the lead draft for about the last 50 laps dick what's that about well what is all about mike is that he was involved in that very early skirmish the big one that happened at the very start of the race he didn't want to get involved any of that sort of thing anymore Fronteras can stay in the back whatever trouble might occur and then go for it at the end of the race she has a much better car that he is showing right now well it looks like that strategy maybe bit Larry Carter in Paul Menard remember they stayed out on the last stop they've not been to pit road since lap 62 they're having a make of green flag stop they're going to have to try to hold their breath for about 18 to 20 laps there I've seen something right now I haven't seen here in a twenty years I don't think two cars hooked up have left to pack and they have definitely done they do junior in the 31 car have absolutely motored off and left that pack of cars that was racing together behind it just I mean just stopped up in the middle of the corner looks like Reed swords and then the 43 car Sorenson was in the wall right in front of the whole pack got a right rear down see that right rear tire and it looks like he escaped the wall there's no damage on the right side of this car he sure got close got close to not getting run over no caution for reed sorenson we stay under green and Dale jr. leading Martin Truex Brian Vickers [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] Martin Truex Jr leader moments ago Joey Logano was up to the front but as you know at Talladega quickly dropping to the back we've had 19 litres in 36 feet changes the most so far this year and moments ago Elliott Sadler who had been involved in the earlier rack and has led 12 straight races here at Talladega scraping the wall at high speed but somehow maintaining position Kyle Busch up there right behind Martin Truex Jr and David Stremme me as we speak in lap 7 if you work with us a little bit earlier with David Ragan leading at the time 14 cars at least involved others sustaining damage you saw Jeff Gordon the points leader go to the world Mark Martin in vault as well Gordon has returned Mark Martin done for the race along with David Gilliland Scott Riggs Jamie McMurray had quit boys because of this pileup that's what Talladega is the big way definitely for the bigger bear this is onboard with Jimmie Johnson who does a great job getting the bottom of the racetrack and avoiding all of this give himself an opportunity he's currently running fifth Jeff Burton who did lead five laps early in this race as we mentioned currently a lap down and the recap four of the movement and leading consecutive laps is a difficult short today with cars coming and gone have the five cautions and as we said so far nineteen different leaders the record for any cup race over the course of this race definitely say right now and you got a car up front right now there's still a lap down but being bushfires leader right now which is important trick Junior pumping a goat's name is Davis creamy but you see Jeff Burton in that 31 car out front and overall Denny Hamlin has led the most laps today 27 Jeff Burton is leading this train around but he's on the tail end of electrical problem lost three laps in the pits got two of them back five a lucky dog and now he's out in front of Martin Truex which would put him on the tail end of the lead lap should the caution fly Kyle Busch right back up there Jimmie Johnson along with Brian Vickers and Kurt Busch and they are about eight to ten laps away from what would be and Jeff Burton is one of those kind of guys that everybody's aware of his situation they knew he was laps down he's also the kind of guy that everybody works with let's cut the guy some slack I'm sure tricks sitting there saying you know well let him we'll let him leave here maybe you'll get his lap back well he is in position should the caution come out to get the free pass right now he just come around because he's the head of the race leader who is now Brian Vickers that if they could get some a long caution and do little they could be really fast look at the right front of Vickers number 83 so 121 laps complete in Talladega Vickers led that lap pit stops coming soon [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] we're under caution for the sixth time today debris in the back straightaway has put us under caution and there it goes looks like that also may have come off the 78 now that one got cleared out under under the caution it's not a claret and clear even though it is Carla tore his car in the picture doesn't matter what it was for Carl he's very happy about it yes the kids lost the draft well it helps Carl because he catches back up with a pack Jeff Burton was just in front of race leader Martin Truex so Burton gets to come back around he's now made up three laps and Paul Menard will get the free pass three laps down here that never you'd never get them all back in one day like we'd like we've seen today with the 31 car folks we didn't have the free pass back several years ago either and as I said I'm not sure these guys are real happy Jeff Burton got back on the lead lap not the way he'd been running to get back go to pit road dick Berggren Brian Vickers will pit out of the third position he has run toward the front all day long after a being involved in an earlier crash they are looking for a shoe they can do some bodywork to this car Steve Kurt Busch says his car is running just a little bit hot they're gonna change four tires and take some tape off the right front of the nose man four tires from Earth Martin Truex Jr and the 18 of Kyle Busch Jeff Dickerson was looking at the back bumper to see if they needed to work on that some more Krista Johnson saying you wish you could take advantage of the push tracking outside without a little tape for straight-line speed for Tigers Jimmie Johnson is down the way and here they come Jimmy dirt tracks it slides it out of the pits he does not beat Kyle Busch now Carl Edwards did not pit he stayed on track to pick up five bonus points leading a lap Edwards becomes this races 21st different leaders [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] under caution at 126 laps we cycle back to Kyle Busch leading over Jimmie Johnson Martin Truex they learn Hart jr. and Brian Vickers now earlier we documented a problem that Jimmie Johnson had getting into his pit and getting out the proximity of other cars let's take a look later in the race in today's State Farm pit road spotlight without the support of Chad and his crew Jimmy couldn't put in this kind of performance just like the support you can expect from your local State Farm agent like a good neighbor State Farm is there sticker tires and fit two pounds air you'll get a little loose green flag at lap 127 a long pit stop for Kurt Busch put him back to 17 and cleaning up some fender damage on Montoya's car put him back to 27th on this restart [Music] we've got 61 laps to go so we know we still have to make it all this work is for the keyword anticipation we're starting to anticipate what you're going to do at the end of this sucker comes victors up the inside Steve what happened on Kurt Busch's stop yeah Mike they had a slow stop I heard Pat trice and tell Kurt Busch one of the tires where the wheels got obstructed by a shock and there was a miscue on the left front of Casey Cain's car crewmen went down and will try to get an update on that situation yes brings the brown here's Brian Vickers sweeps to the outside and there's just barely enough room see if handle makes it three wide nope it goes with its teammate in a turn he just barely slid down you know that was close that was really close I bet Jimmy Johnson up ready to jump out of his seat three wide in the middle in the middle or Kyle Busch goes whoa hey up top to pick up that draft of Jimmie Johnson one truths to everybody else he's three wide by himself there he goes he know what I'm doing and he does it so easily somebody asked me on our Fox Sports chat the other evening at foxsports.com instead of Jeff Gordon look at years old he turns 24 next month is he a lot of good help with you know here the driver with the best shot to reach David Pearson's 105 win marks second on the all-time list how to tell a fella get back to me when he's got 82 wins in his pocket like Jeff does and I'll let you know but surely time is on his side well that's the perfect answer to I mean you know just a lot closer and he's got it not a lot of time but he's got a good seven eight years I hit him if he was to do it up there in the third position remember it was back on lap 42 that he was sideways sliding across the finish line just barely missing the inside wall Mikey and Jimmie Johnson thought they had to say Mike he thought he had the same one last year here in the engine blew up late [Music] Mikey knows how to run this joint I promise you they're high wide and handsome three wide crank him up sounds like a plan to me [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Applause] [Music] [Music] teammates Denny Hamlin in the 11 and Kyle Busch in the 18 both have fast cars they're both capable of leading but will they ever work together yeah but you know if you're at home a little bit take are back on the scene is at 0 7 that black casey mears remember he was involved in that big rig early in the race and he's fought his way back into the top 10 looks to me like these routes teammates are trying to get together - here comes the Reagan car into 16 trying to work to the lead here Kasey Mears has right side damage from the crash on lap 7 Elliot's at the right side damage when he got up into the wall a little bit ago but they're all right up there fighting for the lead looked like David Ragan in that six thought for a moment of trauma jump down in front of Michael Waltrip in the 55 Carlton at second thoughts about the whole is not there [Music] when people saw that e-commerce did you see David Ragan all the way to the outside over there in return for this it kind of racing you expect to see with five to go not fifty five to go with fifty five you know the first the first hour of practice looked a lot like this when we got here on Friday well now is when you got to figure out what what am I going to do what have I got to do to win this thing do I have the car do I need to make some changes tell you in the pre-race about the way he drives a race car oh yeah that said this what he lives for right here if there's a hole I'm going for it that's what he said great spotter and Jeff Dickerson they are they they're like one and that's the reason Kyle can make some of the moves he makes too now like what Brad Keselowski co9 car right behind Elliott savvy his bumper like a dog on a mailman yeah and there they go to the front I haven't seen that kind of speed out of this car all day long he's caused a couple of guys to off his head clubbing cosmetic on the apron to get around him but there's another example those two cars hooked up and just pulled away drove by the pack and pulled away for a moment here comes Burton in the 31 car he's back on the lead lap three laps down many laps ago look at everybody back up as that accordion effect happens Stremme he bumped him he got back into Montoya back back back [Music] is almost another big one say once again now but that's what I'm say about the old man his car must not be handling exactly why the car just shoved up the hill Burton's trying to get off of him and when he did he got the twelve in the back of him and then forty two got in the back of the twelve maybe said you want to play 190 be careful because this table has a lot of flippers better be a pinball wizard [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] welcome back to Talladega 50 laps to go and Kurt Busch is out front today among 22 drivers he's got Dale jr. trying to push him but Darryl what's junior gonna push on again that's what I said the two doesn't have a rear bumper look II know where bumpers I guess he's pushing on this fuel sale you're gonna catch it too real quick the butler tubing there so functionally it is a bumper even though here goes here goes a freight train around the bottom but how about David Reutimann in that double zero car those two Toyota's hooked up together Danny Hammond seems to be one of the best pushers it's here today he's got a push Reutimann come up to the link or he's gonna push Reutimann he actually think he was just pushed him out of the way taint rude rude I'm gonna fall right back in line behind it but Denny Hamlin will lead their lap [Music] where you can get way out there but it doesn't really pay off for home here these guys count probably about 10 miles our fashion [Music] as comm official search engine of NASCAR who was Ricky Bobby's sponsor in the movie Talladega Nights actually you can find the answer task calm and enter the a stop of NASCAR NASCAR casey mears at zero seven car he wants to lead to this thing he wants to be this racist did it 45 lead changes amongst more than half the field but look at mom toy up there in the 42 car remember they had a loan he's made his way back to the front I like the way that's kind of fender work I like to do right there yes sir that fixed that fender Casey mirrors in Devanagari will completely change teams cars parts pit crews shop crews crew chiefs everything but the spotter will be exchanged between those two teams coverage retailers back that 29 card into my new event be my new car gotta work [Music] children's just felt like the [Music] getting any better you felt like I got good drivers I'll have to pit crew chiefs and pigs my dad just kind of thing he's done it before with good results change the chemistry change the result but you know like we talked about all talladega you know from three laps down on the bottom trying to find the lead right here and he may very well get it that is a very fast cat car but you know we talked about handling you know no big deal here you better have a good handling car when you get shoved off in the corner at over 200 miles I was somebody on your back bumper not since Bill Elliott came from five laps down to win here and somebody doesn't like this has just become the 24th different leader of this race I believe you have to admit Larry the Childress cars came here this weekend the best I've seen them in a long time and of course the Ganassi the engine package they have in the 42 and the one car as well those engines are all producing good power and Jeff Burton did lead this race earlier back before he had the electric just about bit that back straightaway wall when juniors weren't in doing we got teammates to the top we got to the bottom they have those two Joe Gibbs cars at the bottom Kyle Busch v8 team did he handle in the 11 here comes junior with the middle it just seems like teammates are starting to really work together Larry are Childress could not cars a pony outside update from kasey kahne spit shaun war the front tire carrier car came down off the jack on his foot the came over and they get into the care center but okay 44 laps to go Dale Earnhardt jr. aside [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] NASCAR Sprint Cup racing on Fox is sponsored by Verizon Wireless get the inside track from Penske Racing and race analysis plus highlights an eisley action all on D cast from Verizon Wireless America's largest most reliable wireless network some say this track is haunted it was built on an old Creek Indian burial ground strange things happen here and there is one of the strangest that piece of debris has put us under caution and you're about to see where it came from not off one of the cars but it is the shade off one of the caution lights these cars make a lot of turbulence this area was originally known as tality ghee but that was the name of the Creek Indian village nearby that Wharf to Tala tiga and then Dalit egos what the locals call it now but when bill france senior in 1968 announced that with the help of the state of alabama he was going to build a super speedway he said we're going to build it in Talladega and for everybody in racing the name stuck yes it did yes it did now here's what's interesting boys I believe it's going to be feeding time on pit road because we've got about 40 laps to go when they make this pit stop everybody can make it to the end on fuel so any great possibility of any green flag stops that are scheduled out the window alright dick Berggren what will they do well Brian Vickers is going to take just two tires and not four in order to get better track position here they are going to try to pack the fuel and he's asked for a little bit of the help but he's pushing people he wants to know how hard he can push them see making a track position dick no tires for Kurt Busch he gets by Michael Walter Mack Dale Earnhardt jr. heels maybe a couple spots on pit road they're gonna go for four tires so that way - go to the end krysta believably Jeff Burton back on the lead lap contending for the win a four-tire stop for Bernie meanwhile Jimmie Johnson thinks his car is pretty good they added a little bit more tame than four tires for the 48 and Kurt Busch with that strategy wins the race off pit road look at Sam Hornish up to second 40 laps to go in the Aaron's 499 at Talladega I may not be playing [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] cheese's soundbites to the race well everybody's made what could be their last stop of the day we're ready to go green with 39 laps to go but Larry strategy on this stop all over the place yeah I mean we had some cars it did feel only like a Kurt Busch david reutimann didn't hamlin sam hornish tony stewart a lot of cars with just two tires bought our cars before Darrin I was talking before tea to go I think I want a full of fuel and four fresh tires let me maneuver that race cuts right and then I can stay out if they have another caution here before too long but that would possibly happen 38 laps to go as they take the green sam hornish casey mears sinner juan Montoya and outside pole sitter Greg Biffle are your front five [Music] remember he had the flat tire up and turned three and four so that puts us now at 33 laughs with 38 laps to go big train coming on the bottom as push and Hornish have the lead that was Tony Stewart at the head of that pack on the inside with help from Dale jr. he just have poor old salmon hanging out to dry he got in line Kurt went to the picked up the other car ex-teammates Kyle Busch Tony Stewart in the bottom lane Casey Mears lead watch that train on track two down the other side but you know watching Kurt Busch that two car I think it's a given how bad play trace remember he pushed his teammate Ryan Newman to the 2008 Daytona 500 win I think he's absolutely the best racecar driver at restrictor plate racing that has not won a restrictor plate race Roger Pitts he's only won one restrictor plate race and that was that 500 with Ryan huge improvement in two pits keep cars overall this year all three of his cars are a potest cars are running much all three cars are running much better you know Sam's led here track to here comes Kyle Busch Tony Stewart Dale jr. Jimmie Johnson there there in two laps they've gone from mid pack to racing for the lead well that the games are over it's all down to it's down and dirty from here all well think about Tony Stewart he hung at the back of the pack for 3-4 through this race he was one of the cars that did fuel only and here he is up there in the top five of this 14 car 36 laps to go and you know how she know the games are over and probably somebody whoever start to hear from a little bit before this thing gets to further into the been riding around at the back a man that wants to drag before that caution before the lat for now I will see 22nd [Applause] 24th 25th back in 22nd and not doing wrong [Music] Kyle Busch now with Dale Junior's that drop Tony Stewart now is when you're looking for that magic guy that magic car that will get behind you and really make you go fast like we've seen two cars break away from the field I think we like these - right exactly look at the run no guys again just look at the speeds right there and you've got to have a good handling car you can't run off into that corner at 200 miles an hour and not have a car that you can have a wide-open p.m. your boat a clear that's six to seven miles per hour faster than that other group here they come Bertrand Val darrell waltrip won a lot of races by showing patience and that's exactly what Carl Edwards is doing he is convinced that the guys up front are racing hard enough that they're going to crash he's hanging back well he's convinced a few other fellas to hang with him because the 55 of the salmon and a few other cars are hanging back with him which in your chat can ask say millions of fans are confused okay they got 33 laps to all figure I think was chanting satellite chat sounded like something he'd say yes it absolutely does that's his man right up there on the high side the fourth spot at 48 car jimmie johnson right behind him Jeff Burton Kristen what a day for Jeff Burton battery trouble Jeff said he's always nervous too but once the race gets going he calls he told me until the laps wind down and that's where the intensity level goes through the roof yeah but sometimes being laps down you just do things that you really didn't intend to do trying to get those labs back he needs to play like he's still three laps down cuz that worked while ago cuz he got one of them back by being in front of the leader when the cops came exactly now he's in eighth place as four cars are trying to break away this is no time to go conservative this is when you lay it all on the line all-in right now and honestly with 33 laps to go I'm not sure I agree with Carlin go to the front or anywhere near that he needs to get going cuz this isn't gonna pay it's not gonna pay off thirty three laps to go 33 cars on the lead lap 24 drivers have led this race but who last lap [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] 28 laps to go boom somebody clipped out I see that piece of debris fine back there it came off of whoever the last car in that group is it's a piece of tape but if somebody at the tailor that line right there they clip the wall well Kyle Busch is our leader Denny Hamlin got kicked out a lead drown and Martin Truex in three laps went from the 17th to 26th just outside the top 12 that would make the Chase for the Sprint Cup Kasey Kahne has slipped to 13th based on where they're running up right now male junior has gained five positions through the running of this race Mark Martin bed early crash has lost five spots 15 cars they've been singing looks like now they're getting single-file everybody like they're about to go Yeah right now somebody decided to jump out of line [Music] [Applause] the last time this happened in this race engineer driving the train Kyle Busch when everybody lined up single file for a while yeah and he had said that jr. has to they've been have to sort of the prognosticators of this one thing we just tell him [Music] no mass right now I look at it's all single-file nice and tidy I just don't think it's gonna stay this way long way can you know somebody's going to get impatient that's what happens to you you sit there you say I'm tired of this we're gonna have to mix it up a little bit we're not gonna win like this place Joe Nemechek in the eighty seven came here unspun sir didn't know if he'd be able to run the whole race based on finances for his on sponsored Toyota he did pick up a sponsor after he qualified for the race in fine fashion he's right there in the middle of this league may have a shot to win it II know Mike you and I were talking before our show today that every week there's a lot written a lot said about the scope 43 of our cars that started this race their plan was obviously that first wreck took out somehow yeah Jo ran great yesterday into Nationwide races today good for him now assuming we've had our last stop let me ask Jeff Hammond his picks for today's the mic I've been watching these guys all day and I'm impressed with the fact now what they've done on pit road to some of the repairs also damaged the rear that car at car worked all day long got crew work all day long to get it right races they've been playing on pit road no mistakes they've been able to get it done make the right calls to tires when they need it for tires and how they got themselves in a great position right now to possibly get their first win and maybe make history by getting your AT&T fastest of most valuable pit crew of the year from your AT&T phone text the pit crews car number two two to five he's watching the 11 and the six and the 99 they dropped to the bottom we know that 11 is a fast car they dropped to the bottom they could not go anywhere could not make any progress had to give that line so it's going to take some good fast cars up here in front to create another line and Carl Edwards right now is running in the 22nd position see if we get any any partners out there on the racetrack is the big thing we've been riding around in the back off damn okay we'll see how many cars Carl Edwards can pass before the checkered flag Mike Edwards runs in 22nd there are 22 laps to go Kyle Busch engineers the freight train Draft around Talladega [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] Cowboys leading with 19 laps to go let's go to today's monster moment by NASCAR Sprint Cup mobile and simple apps Matt Kenseth got up into Jeff Gordon and half the field piled up nine cars went to the garage area five of them did not return from this massive pile up after seven laps stay tuned and ask our seven days a week with live stats and more of a NASCAR Sprint Cup Volvo visits print.com slash speed to find out more only on the Now Network three races he didn't always agree with what his brother to the thighs over racetrack I don't think his brothers gonna agree with what he just did oh no he left a guy he just left him and now he's going to the two cars Kurt is going dead backwards paka got the lead back yeah this is dirty laundry time here somebody's about to get hung out to Toronto they just did I tell you one thing that 18 car is determined to stay in the lead kyle has done everything I mean he's blocked he's been high low everybody keeps looking around but they can't quite clear him the same group he was pulling around the top of the racetrack now they're lined up around the bottom of the racetrack seven days ago he went up to block Matt Kenseth they came down to block Jeff Burton Darrell like you say he's running three lines wide all by himself now here they are once again at watch they're going to get a run [Music] they're gingers gonna have to get up there oh he turned him yikes can't save it come [Applause] tribe he tried he tried he just couldn't hang on to it yeah but it didn't bad I don't think and tricks it's like is it badder than this one but he's okay taking bad either and then we're coming to you you're all right come to XE four tires let's go got us down the lead lap down be okay gets it fired back up do all that spin around a little that's his Kyle Busch the car will not fire let's show you how this all got started well it's just sort of inevitable you know block block block block blocking only blocked so many places so many times get down here in the corner you see the 31 gets in the back of the 18 gets him loose how he ever got from how he gets all the way to where he did and not hit anything I'll never know and Martin Truex he just kept led words he was right in front of Carl Edwards who'd been trying to avoid all this he just checked up a little too much down on the apron down on the apron neither car ever got needed one time ever got hit other than when they 31 knocked to the 18 around I know it's incredible there's no contact now Jeff Burton had been frustrated with Kyle Busch from where Kyle tried to run him down to the flat a few laps earlier this is some amazing driver level my main joy Wow Regan may of the sick car may have gotten to the back of Montoya just a little bit but I don't think that was bad and now we hear they you know the 18 has no starter he can't get cranked he's going to go a lap down [Music] you know the fact that this ended up being just two single cars spin their silly yes every imagine well we've seen that all day you know it's a 55 of the two here in the trial but we've seen some incredible driving about these guys today 18 young fired up there you got it kind of blew every light on them that's what starting sentry routes down yellow yeah bye you know nothing intentional Martin lifted for what was in front of him and Reagan couldn't react fast enough [Applause] [Music] and there's some more bad news with 18 now he's a lap down and we don't have double line restarts inside of 20 laps that's not going to help them any what'll happen next you just have to stick around for the last 15 laps in find out 31 cars on the lead lap this is the eighth caution of the day we want to bring you the rest of this one commercial-free so let's take a quick break we'll be right back for the finish [Music] [Music] they'll restart this time by with 13 laps to go ask.com asks why is the South called Dixie but the answer now a task calm and enter the ask calm NASCAR challenge at the official search attention of NASCAR well here we go 31 lead lap cars 13 laps to go now Kyle Busch he'll be all the way behind those 31 cars because within 20 laps of the end of the race it's single-file restart lead lap cars öand to the front his only hope is a caution before we get the 10th ago did he get the free pass Bart insurance stayed on the lead lap after his spin here we go third team to go Matt Kenseth Dale jr. and then and again on this one it's so tempting you just have to make yourself not jump out of line right now you've got to get going you got to get things working out here before you make a move a lot of jostling back behind the front eight cards now these guys back here they could do that because they got to try to get up here and get in line yeah it's those top six day ten cars they've got to be careful they got a bit of their P's and Q's but just thinking about Matt Kenseth he won the first two races of the season at Daytona in California dismal for that 17 team since those two weeks well so this one that he ended up in the infield care center yesterday so this would be a great turnaround not a great turn over it's a nine car breakaway and look who's at the caboose on that train Carl Edwards who hung out way at the back all day is now hanging out with the lead draft but they're going to get caught look at the run Stuart's got in that red number 14 and Ryan Newman with Jimmie Johnson they've caught the lead draft boy no more Jim he's in big trouble here he's got to get somebody to hook up with so he can get back up there to those leaders but when you lose your money right there hey Justin right but remember what two cars have been able to do we've been seeing it all day long look at Ryan Newman in the 39 Denny Hamlin in 11 you can see their 67 and Matt Kenseth leading the race well you know there's been the best at doing that is the 11 I mean he has been incredible he's a great pusher v jump out there somebody wants to jump up there you watch third here they come to the lead from 10th the lap ago Newman Hamlin in a cat pass Kenseth there love the drive away from the pack we have seen earlier in the race yeah and again you can't not do that you got to drive away from it that's not gonna work out good for you there's once you get out there you stall and here comes the pack again Ryan Newman s one restrictor plate win the Daytona 500 and it wasn't long after that Daytona 500 Roger Penske asked him to resign an extension on his contract he said I'm gonna wait and see how Hamlin's gonna have to pick him up another push you got to find somebody else to push to the front maybe you can get behind who would that be in that Wow look at that how did Carl get up there he was part of that 9 car breakaway at the front Darrell boy Hamlin is sinking like a rock yeah you just lose your momentum and there's nothing it can do I mean Tony Stewart tried to pick him up at Stewart was so much quicker he's gone around and Hamlin from the front of the pack in the back can do right now is just stay hook to that double yellow line on the bottom that's all he can do well we haven't seen any speed out of that car today so it makes me just wonder if the 17 and the 88 particularly and we know the 30 ones passed are they just sort of using him right now 55 lead changes so far and now that pack that was so spread out into three groups is all one draft again what did you see Burton shoot out from behind Dale jr. to pick up that outside line but nobody went with him Darryl no David Ragan in that six car and Tony Stewart the 14 there goes you can live back down the back straightaway here we go trouble Jimmy Johnson Junior David Stremme II this is version two of the big one well desperate men were starting to do some desperate things out there as the laps wind down like I said Mike this is this is when you lay it all on the line if you got it use it both ends for Martin Truex Robby Gordon oh thank goodness he's moving around in that car because look how the front stove in is he hit the inside wall really hard see how this happened back in this pack back here that was jockeying for position nobody starts trying to figure out which the line they want to go below when to go high o Montoya dumped in the toy I got turn yeah he got turned in fact Michelle was wanting to move around and when he did he just got clipped [Music] said Mayfield's car in flames the 41 a very good day for Hendrick Motorsports that's three of the cars that have been knocked out Montoya just got shoved into Bobby Labonte and just like a croquet ball being sent robby gordon gun shot into the inside wall jeremy mayfield going there in the 41 car he's got a lot of fire coming out of that automobile boy that's a hard lick that is hard right there oh but you know the great thing they've installed the safer barrier back there on that inside wall look at that is that Sam Hornish then went up and hit the outside wall and kept going let's do some ride-alongs here starting with Michael Waltrip heavy impacted a hard impact and all these on the big one and in this one [Music] course Jimmy Johnson had taken the point's lead since his teammate Jeff Gordon the 24 had problems earlier I want to tell you about Robby Gordon's hit if he hits another hundred feet down track he hits the concrete instead of the safer barrier let's see what happened here Montoya got hit by the 11 and that turned him a little bit to the left and then went over to the right now when he corrected he got into Bobby Labonte and it was on from there when Hornish scooted through there for a while and then got turned let's look back from Jimmie Johnson's car looking back at Waltrip Jimmy gets turn pretty hard impact there and here's what Carl Edwards saw you know Darryl the contact was Hamlin and Montoya but that really started about six cars forward and just kind of you know accordion to back well what you do when you're sitting back there you're watching up ahead I mean you see a couple of lines trying to form you got an inside line the outside line and you're starting to say which one do I need to get in and you start moving around on the racetrack and you get hooked by somebody and we're being towed the 48 car will not finish this race he's going to go to the garage area there's not enough laps left they've got a broken upper control arm so this pretty much will in their day you can see it right there we're right front we're also being towed that Matt Kenseth had to come to pit road he had a flat right rear tire Kenseth had been the second place car and dropped to 21st just before the caution came out well this car right here the 11 car basically caused that accident he got into Montoya or at least he was a part of that accident let me put it that way and he was lucky because he went through the whole thing and didn't hit anything very hard we're under caution we have seven laps to go it's been out of the Hollywood hotel well Mike Larry mentioned moments ago we had the the sequel to the big one right let's take a look back and it was lap seven very early in this had changed the the look of this race with the points leader and Jeff Forge in the retro Pepsi scheme involved in this at least 14 cars other cars receiving damage but we scored and got back on the track and there were guys like Kurt Busch and Elliott Sadler who were involved we got to the front of the pack now in the yellow line coming in to play with jr. yeah I see James jr. and Brad Keselowski plenty of drivers a nationwide series they run each other below the yellow line jr. led 20 laps in this race Kyle Busch who has locked up the most laps led with 42 17 eventually Jeff worked with the tap and that's him spinning in the 18 and spinning out of the picture in terms of winning this race the pole-sitter receiving damage as we had the incident just moments ago one Pablo Montoya but Ryan Newman leading we have seen already this year guys who've had losing streaks break that with a victory from Jeff Gordon to Mark Martin we have 43 races since Ryan Newman has won his last race it's been 29 since Dale Earnhardt jr. I just want to add right here this is a very familiar sight I believe I'm a watch dish yesterday in the Nationwide race Ryan Newman was driving the number 33 car yesterday and jr. was driving his own car he was running second here toward the end of the race and and when the final lap was all said and done David Ragan wanted witness so this thing's a long ways from being over all right the points with you see how many laps to go at this moment with our points leader who we talked about being knocked out so that would knock Jeff Gordon down behind and Kurt Busch would take over the lead followed by Tony Stewart Jimmie Johnson remember 15 Talladega races have been settled by a last lap pass and one of those Hendrick drivers who's been on a roll lately Jimmie Johnson our dick Berggren is with him well that's Talladega how tough was it going through that crash man it sucks racing here you had a great race car and guys worked real hard to get this thing in order and very fast and then get that close to the end it gets tore up so I just wanted to just look to me like some guys were beaten didn't have the position and tried to force their way in from the outside and went across somebody's nose and started a track from my position so just too bad Osman was an awesome-looking quahogs awesome it was indeed well we'll see you at Richmond next weekend Oh Ryan Newman is our leader Newman led this race at ten laps to go the leader attend ago has won here at Talladega only twice in the last 12 races and is this going to count it you think we're gonna make it to green white checkered here we're gonna get close pretty much the goal here we're gonna get cleaned up before we get into into overdrive let's check with Matt Yocum Mike learning a big lesson from what happened in yesterday's Nationwide Series race Dale Earnhardt jr. talking strategy with the car right in front and another part of the conversation is if they can break away he said if for some reason I start to lose Ryan I don't want you talking the radio I will tell you quickly you tap his dad because Greg Newman is Ryan spotter you tap his dad and then that way Ryan knows to drag the brake that way they don't back themselves up into the cars that are trying to chase them down a lot of strategy looking to work out here in the closing laps well Darrell that's one thing the leader can do he can go back and pick up a drafting partner if he gets a little too much gap on that second place car yeah and the reason jr. like a green white checker we've seen two cars how they can sometimes gap the rest of the field he'd like to think that he and Ryan were gonna be able to do that but I'm not sure you can do it on a restart you got to get a good head of steam up for ad to happen five laps to go here at Talladega and a lot of sports action to come here on Fox welcome to baseball on Fox [Applause] major league baseball presented by DirecTV on Fox check your local listings for the game in your area I just want to point out one thing a guy right now it's running six it's running six yesterday when it came to the checkered flag and he was part number six company his car number six right and he ended up in position number one I'm so in David Ragan so and not only that but this kid has really really done it an incredible job at this restrictor plate races he had two top fives here last year and now he's sitting here he won yesterday in the Nationwide race and he's sent here in a six right now we're getting in the guy right in front of him Joey Logano in that 20 car the rookie you know he's had to wonder what in the world has happened to my racing career since I've been in Sprint Cup Series and here he is with just about four laps to go sitting in the top five look at this Potter's at you under fingernail thinking now most importantly they're Greg Newman standing right alongside TJ majors Dale junior spotter as they try to work this out we're going to get the restart with four laps to go on the point Ryan Newman trying to score the first win for what his stewart-haas racing Dale jr. trying to win roll for Rick Hendrick drivers boys try to get back to Victory Lane companies are by Tony's not going something wrong with his car yeah he's off the pace not getting up to speed at all no and you see what Dale jr. was talking about he's laying the wood - he's laying a bumper to that 39 car trying to get him away from the rest of the pack but tell you what that 31 and that six maybe that 20 car think they may have a little something for that front you're three laps to go when they come back Newman trying to hold the bottom to hunt around in the back all day and here he is during good shape to go break away in the but likely to have these there you go this is what you come to Talladega for [Music] crazy finishes Stewart just came by and he's on seven cylinders keeps allowing Junior keep speaking the nose out to the inside but there's no room there to make a move and I'm not sure why Ryan is kind of leaving that bottom just that little bit Shelby might have found the way if he's not careful at four he's trying to get back here to the 31:31 de genève once's spotter to be a commentator and tell him everything that's happening go and win he's got to decide I tell you it's working like he wanted it to them because here they come look at the 99 and Brad Keselowski and we have once again there's that two-car draft and they have you got again they get off turn two it's 10 mile an hour faster than the cars in front oh they'll be coming to the white flag this time it's going to get interesting because jr. cannot sit there and run second this is the best shot at winning he's not gonna run second in this race I continue and as Edwards going to get to the front are they gonna stop got that wrong baby and what's interesting that's a hindered car running second that's a Hendrick related car leading to race and that's a Hendrick leaded car pushing from the back all day to the lead with one to go free Chevy's in one four and it doesn't matter now your friends are where you find them back Carl endless I don't know if they can catch him what we've seen today to Cardiff that big ugly run on them I don't know that the 39 in the 88 can catch them they're in the draft of Edwards and Keselowski [Music] restarted eight that night if that oh nine can stay hooked to the back of the 99 it's gonna be hard to get it's gonna be close right here to line Ken Kozlowski try to win it I don't know I don't think he can step out until he waits till the last second [Music] Edwards will not Keselowski won this race unbeliev Carl Edwards car destroyed and juniors protege Keselowski the winner and Carl Edwards is moving around and ready to climb out Larry look at that heartbreak I'll draw carburetors go just completely go Carl did what he wanted to do he stayed at the back all day long he played it smart had this race possibly won [Music] not sure where Carl's going maybe thanks the team runs across the start/finish line over town that's what his goods what he's doing that's what he's doing I come here you know is he's an athlete a marathon runner I want to finish the race and he did get to a standing ovation from the crowd shades of Ricky Bobby [Applause] [Applause] don't you know Larry that James Finch is fit to be a bad right now Finch owns this car he bought it from Rick Hendrick and leased the engine a whole Hendrick package let's take a look Mike Carl Edwards he opened it up just a little bit yeah I'm not sure I think this is a hard lick right into the fence I mean that car that was like Bobby Allison did here in 1987 the catch fence did its job the good Lord did its job thank goodness we have the new Staller much stronger safer catch fences and Newman took a hard hit from Edwards as well just a car with the room left on the bottom what happened here is the old man looked to the outside Carl went up a little bit to block him and oh now went right back to the bottom and cliff T you know the move looked a lot like the one that Brian Vickers put on Jimmie Johnson when Vickers won Wow but what a hit wow that is 1987 all over again oh my gosh and did you see that I believe it was Biffle that almost t-boned the 99 but watch the Oh nines gonna look to the outside way already has Karl went up to block him a little bit now he's going to come down to try to block him again and you can get one shot at it but you don't get to watch this what a lick Oh unbelievable you know and looking very carefully at the catch fencing that held and I did not see any debris go into the grandstand and that certainly is is very gratifying to see well it was going to be wild I didn't know it's gonna be this while I'm here the three back of him this is from Carl's and from Dale jr. [Applause] but Darryl I want to ask you on air because I did not see Brad Keselowski do anything wrong there no no it was a blocking move on Carl then I looked at the outside Carl went up to block that move and when Carl came down the old now it was there another first-time winner of Talladega here's the cool down lap Dale jr. and Brad Keselowski kind of getting together Chandler with a big fist popping over his leg is Lasky didn't see him up [Laughter] everybody's gonna say it Kyle Busch spun the winner out after the race Hey I begged to partner with you [Applause] talladega it is something special Brad Keselowski's you pulled into Victory Lane I saw your hands were shaking can you believe you just won a Sprint Cup race that you did so at the biggest track of all Wow pinch me I don't know in my wake how about this team fans out there man thanks for coming this is the best show on earth we got apologized to Carl for wrecking them but man the rules can't go a little the L line and he blocked and I wasn't going below it so I don't want to wreck a guy but you're forcing that situation so but there's nothing else I could do we had a lot of fun tonight man was that fun I hope the fans did too because this is NASCAR racing and this is cool can you take us through that last lap and the moment you knew you just won a race as you cross that start/finish line well I kind of felt bad cause I was watching Carl my mirror wreck hard and I hope he's okay I feel bad about that but man that's the rule he knows the rule as well as anyone else and he put himself in that spot and I don't want to wreck again sorry for that but what a great Chevrolet how about that chamois man there's this thing's have some smoke man I can't believe it I appreciate his best finish coming into this race in the Sprint Cup Series 19th he is now a Sprint Cup winner Matt when the dust settled Dale Earnhardt jr. came home second you had the perfect seat to watch your protege score his first win walk us through what you saw from your seat well I had to deal with the 39 Ryan to break away from the pack and and kind of do what we didn't do yesterday in a Nationwide race and we had it going and I thought there's no way you know I was we were staying tied together and there's no way no man catches and they were smart enough to move up which the higher lane had been easier and faster and winding the car out better all day they were smart enough to run in the middle and here they come and I couldn't believe Brad was pushing that 99 I would have guessed anybody else but he did an awesome job but I couldn't see what happened on the front straightaway I was behind a 39 and I was asked Tony juniors to tell me what to do cuz I can't see what they're doing up there if I reckon and he said stay you know they're spending up the track stay on the bottom and it was a pretty hard hit that Ryan had but I had a blast of the night the National Guard camp energy Chevrolet was running good all day long it run up front and I love these fans here enjoy watching the race like that and we got a little boring sometimes in the middle but man it's just a long when we're all just trying to stay around to the end I can't thank my team enough and I'm so proud of Brad you know he did a great job his family's got to be extremely happy James Finch you know as a car owner that's just amazing man he's awesome dude can you imagine the party that will be taking place and I had in Panama City when Dale jr. came within one position of being Rick Hendrick's fourth straight winner Brad Keselowski in only his fifth Sprint Cup start becomes Talladega is ten first-time winner and yes Carl Edwards makes it to the finish line
