at Pepperdine you'll not only see policy differently you'll see your future differently from here too [Music] generally my name is Pete Peterson and I'm the interim dean here at Pepperdine School of Public Policy and it's a great honor and pleasure to have you all here for what is our first Wilburn distinguished lecture here at the School of Public Policy now some of you might be asking what is a Graduate School of Public Policy doing hosting an esteemed historian discussing a man who lived over two centuries ago after all it is the purpose policy school to educate and graduate the next generation of technocrats and bureaucrats that go on to work in government using the latest techniques and quantifiable telling policy analysis well yes we certainly do care about those things here at Pepperdine but what makes that program unique why do say you'll see public policy differently from here is our understanding that the best public leaders must consider an array of factors in creating what can normatively be called good public policy one of these factors is history and whether we're talking about land-use policy here in Malibu or trade agreements with Asia policy makers should not only know the present factors affecting these decisions they should also be able to think historically in their policy-making process to know the one the pressures to solve today's problems are present today they can ride on your desk after years and sometimes decades and centuries of development at the School of Public Policy as we approach our 20th anniversary no one associated with our program understood this better than Nina Meredith Jim over when I took on this role that is interim dean over the summer I asked for the school's founding documents as a way of thinking historically about my upcoming year in that research I stumbled upon this quotation from a memo outlining the future of the Pepperdine School of Public Policy quote it is truly unique among public policy programs it includes a stronger emphasis on culture history and the brain book's theme than others I see it has a breadth in core courses which can be a hallmark unfold those words were written by Jim to then president of Pepperdine David Davenport back in January of 1997 and it is this vision and person we celebrate in the distinguished wilderness lecture series along with great friends of the School of Public Policy rosemary bukata and Beatrice Restivo we are also honored to be joined by Pepperdine University more remember kitty cat and so he wanted to sneak in and out I would be remiss not to note that we are also joined by dean emeritus junior learn being thank you for joining us here tonight so not further ado as Napoleon might say I want to bring up our Ronald Reagan professor of public policy dr. Steve Hayward to introduce tonight's lecture thank you so much for coming I compete insa my very great pleasure and honor to introduce the inaugural lecture in the Wilburn distinguished lecture series though I will link to others to ponder the possible symmetries between the dating sake of this lecture the will done and the subject of tonight's lecture Napoleon certainly I think is fair to say that the Wilburn has been a great captain in subduing the mountain countryside over the years on behalf of peper time without suffering either in a Moscow intern or a Moscow in a retreat or a water balloon defeat though I'm sure you prefer Wellington as a comparison as both the elegance that as people assist explaining here Pepperdine we take the view that public policy is dependent on quality is much broader than just technical skill and that the highest practitioners the art of policy understand the importance of character principles of individual genius and even in a word it's hard to define statesmanship I'm a parent raised a continent of church here a person of whom are lectures - written several books and apparently economy in Churchill managing his memoirs or one goes something like this in the station between politics and policy is diminished as the point of view is raised at the summit true politics and Coliseum are one so speaking of the summit I'd like to think it's not really happen stance but in fact as an attribute of problems that the school of other policy is at the point of the Pepperdine campus with the highest view to getting troubled and aggressive faculty anyone who doesn't understanding genius in world affairs often requires a genius and so we were thrilled that andrew roberts was able to include Pepperdine on a very busy itinerary here in the United States this week if the author editor of 19 books each one of them a Jim he's a graduate of Cambridge is presently a visiting professor at the horse the part of the King's College in London and more institutions besides that he's lectured at numerous major American universities appeared in countless newspapers magazines and TV shows and recipients so many literary and academic Awards that if I were to go through the roster even we have clubs that's left for his lecture so it won't that's what the internet is for these days see Andrew - Robert net there are two things you don't appear though it's very briefly on anger runners done and early it's not yet that I saw one of us of one of the spaces books called the storm of war I reached number two of the New York Times bestseller list and look that is the inspiration for his lectures - Napoleon alive was not only a winner of Los Angeles Times biography prize in 2014 but was recently optioned by Harvey Weinstein for a possible TV series so my name is Easton was about the lessons of Napoleon so please give a warm Pepperdine waves welcome to andrew roberts it's a great honor to be invited to address you this evening King here is about my fish the machine on classic spear and thank you very much indeed for those very kind words feed mostly to my book cotton on to on the vessel of it is mainly by a book about Michael Jackson there's been more books written about a poem and there's been days since his desk Wilder should I in pergola public yet yet another one and the arteries but since 2003 year 2000 the colossal Napoleon in Paris has been ringing out every single one in publishing Ellison one of the 33,000 letters the detailing inside and what these do is to allow us to get a sense of the extraordinary way that this man managed to compartmentalize his mind he was capable of thinking entirely and solely about the subject at hand completely ignoring everything else that was going on around him and he was therefore able to deal you subjects to the exclusion of all works you see it for example when just before the night before the Battle of Borodino the bloodiest battle in the history of mankind up until a point a terrible battle where in the six square miles of the battlefield is the equivalent of having a bin Laden jumbo dress smashing into those six square miles every five minutes sort of 10 hours of the battle killing or wounding everybody on board and yet the night before that battle he was able to sit down and write the rules of a girls school is he going to set out the inside Paris and in fact I think later when he was in Moscow when the Russians had burned down two-thirds of their foe councils and Moscow he was also a believer mm city was consumed in ashes as you seen from the Philip do you were worn piece show that's going out of neurons and the model tables also sit down unlike the new regulations for the Comedie Francaise story capacities with words cut everything out out you won't see it also actually in the campaign that led to the greatest victory one that word about the Knights in 1805 where he had to lose his entire army from the from the channel close that annoying six earth well over 600 miles along down the across the Rhine and Danube down to to fight the austro-prussian war hasn't and yet even though he was able to keep in mind an almost cleared graphic memory and where every daily brigades needed to go into the villages amount of the needs to go right away across Europe and and give them the things that they needed to be there he was also able to write appear for favi prefect of Genoa to tell him to stop taking his ministers for the Opera the total River Napoleon is all too often he seemed just as a dictator and just as a woman welcome to the yet abyss those designations later on and a lot of the build a lot of creators he also walls in the release fiber and where when you see whistling once you search I paraphrase he they also acquainted everything we own Sal insane and when Colonel Gaddafi and one of them Sonia Berlusconi actually had one create hundreds so we were scary in that I alleviate in this book the fact we have twenty two mistresses and nothing might be sir these these terrible people and certainly nothing like be a normal rock was the ghastly genocide of 20th century dictates this is one thousand of creator when he came to power listing a military coup in 1799 the Google through mayor he found little of 46 different evil codes in France and he was able to bring them all down to a single body of laws the code Napoleon which you can read in one single book that everybody could understand the whole nation could Dirk importantly his educational reforms are the basis behind the long Sorbonne behind the grande Ecole elite a when you go on your romantic weekend to Paris you will cross one of the four bridges that he built over being said and the walking on some of the sort of half miles and Keith including the cables vehicles where the French foreign ministry is and this is a manly way to the middle to learn which likely is still comforted by Frenchman stay you've created the of the process which is still early Central Bank and the total current and the completed college needs every Wednesday to set but also France this is a builder and place gentle not just not a common and rattled normal detectives well it would save the best bits of the French Revolution quality before the law religious toleration the way of witches armies when they went into regulation Italian and German cities were would go into the ghettos and let me Jews out of the ghettos Stoppers and reinforce where the NS college they were able states giving them religious and civil liberties this is not the kind of thing place essentially pages in English seven and so he kept the best bits of the preposition and he distorted all the all the mad bits the lucky bits being at the 10-day week for example or the clothes of the Supreme Being and he also got rid of all of the mass Gil appeals that you see at the time to the reign of terror and sensing 93 incentivised for that 40,000 people were billeted largely on called class grounds and you only have one last guillotine McCulloch Napoleon's time and that was when even survived one of the nineteen fascination attempts on useless vegetables that were were killed so so this is a man who I felt it was worth spending longer actually researching and writing this book than the penance pencil santolina and elders gather in the corslet it took me to some fifty three of Napoleon's sixty navigators in learning ten countries and what they showed me was the way in which in a single two dog he could see the property of a battlefield in understand different forces as work there and leakers and includes his military genius on the battles to the works of exactly one forty seven of those battles and through several only those seven when you go for example to the attitudes of too long absolutely south of France where is the the tension ages people's eventually you can go up just above the outer harbor there and see immediately how if you are able to capture the fourth Internet as it's called which is on a tiny little promontory there you would then be able to fire keeps Kalyn waters down onto the road maybe in the outer part of forcing them to leave the harbor again that prosper but it'll fall and that's what he needs well as you go very consistently you make sense to a lot of them the Battle of man table in Israel but he must get is his favorite that the neutrals all time what was the militia the very air waving bringing his art I was falls directly behind the enemy and of course create absolute havoc and enhancing the earth in Israel in Palestine and when you go to mount table actually mechanisms at that table is about a pathway of different battles gathered nonetheless now people said about the difficulties they know that's what everybody's about and you can see how you manage to hide his forces in the undulations of the of the ground in the Vale Jersey and get his forces around the lack of witness of scholarship victory there's an ultimate selfie and I mentioned earlier his greatest victory and then he too was able to find an entire division suits division of well over ten thousand men in May in a little Valley which was covered in mist and as the missus burnt off during the morning by the son of Alphaeus which was always celebrated given the great part of the Pony Parties Maitland epic the son of the mountain is burnt on three and at the key Cyclops will notice about 9:15 in the morning he and see the Unleashed this attack straight up attacks in Heights to smash through the austro-prussian center so all of these in so many other battles too you can see the way in which he was able to use the extraordinary good educationally education there's a series of military academies and also exam intelligence and also his endless reading of history it was one leadership lesson that that he imposed on his on his captain's and his generals and that was the read history read biography he himself forbid from the a page settlement and you know that was absolutely always the best kind of leadership that lesson people giving away people simpletons the monstrance easily made out B and and because he's a sense of humor and ethically little a decidedly life having little practice but almost instinctively if he was have a early somebody who is charismatic not us simply because there are babies but because people wanted to be around the people who enjoyed their company when he was in the end sent off to some cleanup and it wakes out everybody you've ever met be coming back and they didn't know how long he'd be there for nonetheless twice as many people and wanted to go with him and spend spend his the timing years ago the British could possibly allow media authorship this is a sign of tremendous charisma when you're still and people still want to be with you even in all those they're even when you all haven't you exactly seated one of the reasons was description secure and in course my research I came across a and a series of Napoleon of gags which which I present my adverbs and then Muslims when another escaped lunatic came up to him at the Opera and said that he was in love with the Emperor Joseph II and the painting said you seem to have made a curious twist comfortable in a location where the authorship with Paris the toggle the road wrote a deterioration of sake up letters who you were Napoleon and saying do not have the opportunity to give his life to the Emperor is very unlikely considering there's quite a large vision and Napoleon wrote in the top right-hand corner of the letter please pay at 12,000 francs to natalya archbishop out of the theatrical fund Tom the pleasure of further writings but was finding these early seventies great minds and in the myth that that the mulberry cabbage AP was the kind of set piece Romeo and Juliet story unfortunately usually it was a sorry young Palestine was unfaithful to Napoleon within six weeks of their lips in three weeks of their marriage in large sir 1796 and with a young family bizarre an essence invasion cavalry who their contemporary said had all the solid week makers assistant and endure and he found out about it when he was in the desert in that in just outside Cairo before the Pyrenees and it was devastating to impotence he was very much an ugly crier but he took on the first of these twenty two mistresses lemon got back to Paris II have this fantastic sort of climactic our plastics organic domestic Rao claims the trailer and people shouting and packing their bags and all of the rest of it and at the end of it and they forgave each other and they carried on for ten years in a much more interesting what elements of subtle muscle complicated relationships and just the the Romeo and Juliet story that you were you often hear about some you that it's a it's a lot small around interesting story them than that and when one looks also at at the propaganda that was used against the poetry one realizes quite helpful isn't the wartime propaganda of innovative very early era waltz because they somehow managed to make them out to be a monster and enter the terminus and platoons of monstrous figure but at the same time as fondly and ridiculous in the Lucas figure and of course his always made out to be visiting school it isn't important he was slightly by part people to pay for the sticks which in the absence of insulin at vampire and so we were having and so not the not religious that constantly played out I knew this lobbies because when I was making a television BBC TV series we hadn't went to santolina to see the fluid which he died he's going you get to you you have to take a vote for six tens if you can't fly their suits me six days out and from Cape Town and actually during the June uncle's they'd say what made it even more difficult was the fact that the intent to sit next exactly the same person was home for every meal the entirely in fireworks six days my case a Swiss railway engineer I believe it and when I thought to work with here in which he died and when none of the day's news were looking in the television cameras were all I lay down on his bed bed and I'm exactly like that but the way the concilium lucky that he was he groomed to to the inverter to power and at the same time as the greatest British political caricatures of of the client extension James gillray and Thomas Robinson factly being all relative to make them out here he was a he's unlucky in many ways it was not the warmonger birth one automatically a series of a comprehend thing it was seven walls of the coalition that broke out between the personal sense in 93 which cuts ugly can't be played on impact factors alien cavalry as on artillery there ten time and the actual final war of seven coalition in detective about at Waterloo in 1815 all those key can be blamed entirely for me totally unnecessary an opportunistic abdul nasir war that started in 79 in 1808 went all the way through to 1840 and of course is also responsible for the invasion of Russia in 1812 the yet of the final corollary which we would killed as a condominium his main mr. gryszek circumstances of retreat from Moscow which you'll also see really a report on warranty sanitation project it was only it was not necessary that either of these two walls but what reason was he invaded Russia to try to force Russia back into what was called the Continental System which was a protectionist economic system we hope because so much pressure on Britain that Britain would be forced to the negotiating table and made peace I mean but people did true to assume as so many historians have that the responsibility for the for the invasion was entirely down to some kind of Army it's always explained in terms of the various personal computers and this this idea of the ancient Greek demotic trip being used to to explain his is coming menses it doesn't lend apparel in fact and where there is such a thing has been occurring really complex for you concept of independent object and it doesn't fit but the poem didn't have one instead l knew that he had already defeated the Russians twice into into earlier campaigns the Alice's campaign which I've spoken to making a tribe and also the Cleveland campaign in 1807 which ended with the Peace of Tilsit in heaven only over twice the size of the Russian army the largest invasion force in human history up until at four point six hundred fifteen thousand men the same size as Paris which was the largest continental sisterhood city in Europe had no idea because some hundred thousand men his central fighting force were going to die from typhus a truly disgusting these in which a last first defecates inside your body and then dies there as well and was killed even in the mint a after about four days he lost a hundred thousand mentors which causes the disease that was diagnosed until 1911 nearly a century later and he also had a gained enough type completely want to say he didn't know about the Russian winter and 14 other Russian teams are highly intelligent educated man he took on the campaign within Voltaire like a child observer which of course have we story of the battle upon saga there so knew perfectly well our colleague data which is why around all times get from Moscow factors for less than here take them to get from småland to Moscow including about a burrito with problem was that he on his on his return on the way back to sleds he thought a for you to step son you came to Bernie called a battle kabalyero Slovaks about 65 miles southwest of the Bosco and it was there that he was betting terrible battle where the town caught fire it's all wood everybody all we did was burn to death his when you go there and you can see the the only building that wasn't a fluid which is beast and condoms there and there are the bullet holes on the top of the level to look above the other condom and he took the decision the day after the court he believed that the Russians were on the road south that you won't be going to continue network instead he's going to do a huge dog lick back farm about the filters for a video and then get onto the muskets than X square to get back that way it's one decision video thing on decision thousands during that campaign but it was an absolutely catastrophic violence that's the French army out in the open as the blizzards came in and which led to the seams the strength has a perilous force with all the other horrors that one sees of the cost of the Berezina revelation so that reason that the see that he is a valley in Russia not because here the Fallen praying to sarma some ancient Greek sense of persecutors and then in the autumn moon campaign even must the same kind of disaster as well when made series instead and he was also tremendously unlucky but most importantly also the Duke of Wellington thought of the most fortress campaign especially in the actual Battle of Waterloo himself he was everywhere he was on his on his horse he went into something squares he went into across the battlefield from left to right three times he brings willing to mark that day and whenever a battery needed to be to be aligned he was there whenever a regiment means which is gorgeous there's a fantastic that was very activist himself depending on the other hand and first of all had a serious personnel problem in that his battle commander Marshall negative raised afraid was really suffering from the early 19th century improvements of post-traumatic stress disorder into the last man out of Moscow he has gone into murder law senator of Russia II would have gone into Russia is caught nearly forty thousand men and yet it develops between 89 and so you've seen this complete devastation of himself before and he really hadn't hadn't got back into the swing of things at all by the time of me at the campaign he made serious mistakes in the campaign the Palin's greatest Marshall Martin gal who was not on the battlefield Iraqi had the billion gave him some incredibly important draws governor Paris in charge of the Minister of War as well he's in charge of the National Guard but when you really would need it was a course on the battlefield and so that is another lesson of leadership you regard to ensuring that your you have the important people to write post at one time in one sentence he was very unfortunately is their great chief of staff Alessandra Bertier who live in his sleep surface in the Italian campaign Cynthia's earlier was well we know that reasons with their stories their no repeat sin out of the window or whether he was pushed out a window whether he jumps out whenever whatever happens he died too into the full battle an airport asleep inter couldn't be there so instead he was Napoleon put martial solution was the wrong man to be a chief of staff good back to a bit of mentality associate all along being in all the wrong places he was also unlucky at that in several other aspects not least because we also simply donate this day cool it was that ordered and be great cavalry charge too early without support from from horse artillery or infantry that smashed into or tentatively stir smashing TV and limb allied squared I would say angular and it wasn't the British Army that one button or click the Angela Rana Army the British daily without sort of the sense more people spoke german wellington Jonathan spoke English and and when the this is this over-hasty attack took place it wasn't supported properly by other people that could then sweep away the squares within squares with with camera with some great shots of infantry fire and of course when charging at a line of Steel their naps will not charge into it and there are examples of squares breaking and it happened twice in the Battle of and in 1813 for example and that was when a horse reserve assault killed but it continued on skinning into the front row of the of the square not in the infancy of the size and then other horses charged on inside into the square which leads automatically to absolute column sum 90% casualties the controls people on horseback recovering on horseback with swords and Lance's are able to search at the unprotected backs of the other infantryman in square leading soon as I said the up to night extensive people who have scarcely incurable reading but that did not happen about the walkers and so as a result the podium that repelling lots and and yet and II went to since we know where he wrote the business is also a key was with the biggest bestseller at the 19th century so even the more copies than Tom's Cabin were only the other great 19th century were necessary so when one looks as if their life it strikes me that it's only it does as a standing an opposition really to be determinist or the Marxist concept whereby whereby history is giving a lot wolves some be disturbing future some future that can be explained the developers altered dictation photo ferry's or anything that doesn't involve with and actually taking daily decisions maliciously apart from the coagulation really of millions of people taking individual decisions auditory world and so when one sees these that are these great decisions taken marketed one must appreciate and that the youngest shipping was right although he had fifteen year old boy on the ancient Valera zone which was the trigger to it roaming freely which variant surrendered in month of the lack of water and everyone's expecting is over to come on board and dedicating the good needed states armed home shipping in there giving moments and writing this diary this service young issue them and control she said that what Napoleon did was to teach us what one small creature mark ourselves will achieve and a span so short settings wonderful thank you very much we both tend to commit suicide for people to those questions and sorry activity well raise your hand I will run up with the mic and we follow the cheddar D rule here which is get your statement as a formal question and no one wants to go for there's a break foldable person that's Robert thank you very much for a very informative talk I wonder fellow British historian Sir Michael Howard as pointed to Napoleon's development of mandatory conscription as being a major turning point in warfare and I wonder what your assessment of his development of mandatory conscription is well and it has been ever really the debate or mass who's the French revolutionary concept 1793 labels in seventies or down laurel 1798 predates Napoleon by a year so I don't think almost all British historians paint the video and likely the name is might American but in a different and but it's not fair to depend on earlier however taking your question in in sort of larger sense yes of course it was a huge make a huge difference to all parent present in 19th and 20th century because and you suddenly had had this a proclamation of war in democracy at war as it were rather than just volunteer forces which were much smaller ones and say a veggie was able to put into the design well 615,000 invading rusticles which which worth numbers the development seen before and sellers result was able to deliver pepper however by 1812 and many of his ideas such as the call system and also the bengal mass were adopted by other countries Russia and Austria amongst them the Russians were bringing out huge forces if alien a random act of walking or even still a hundred fifty thousand obstacles and three hundred fifty thousand Russians who were marching towards France at the time we shown which does entirely I mean you like revolutionize water someone else while someone's thinking of one act my vision I've got one for you when someone looks flags but you mentioned and I read about he little eyes of other Jews the Jewish gathers in Eastern Europe what I hadn't completely unfamiliar with what happened in Egypt was a real westernization or liberalisation of I guess was adamant Egypt at the time red person as far as schools women doing the school's things that we see now in Afghanistan and Iraq if he attempt any of those measures in Egypt no he very much I didn't want to irritate the vehicles in vain though it was in the Ottoman Empire in in a sort of birthday Euro cents a factor it was actually run entire and they will see any form of civilization and bring in some modernization in terms of street lighting and printing and various other things that the case was also be French influence but he he Furby did not want to antagonize the religious sensibilities of being close to the extent that he actually talked about converting to Islam and the EEO hoping other founders on the central product to settle goals and the first was of the big in arms who came together and discussed this wanted to be assured that the French army would not drink wine they had they had brought 800,000 priests performing to a lot of the Egyptian campaign is very unlikely and and also there's big question over and circumcision the they think they wanted certain the French generals at least to be circumcised which is the only thing I have no idea that as part of the the prejudice in those days which is also a bit of a sparkling sock completely someone else are still here and then I've got the other side the Romans will give my glasses I don't see that for us this may be a bit controversial how do you see or do you see any parallels with Isis fighting occupying ruling the areas day within their own way of course I'm not suggesting that the way they've done it is the right thing to do but there seems to be that much the same pattern of creating Martin a tional service within their own group they occupy land mass and cities and for example they run the second largest city in Iraq so they have seemed her adopted on the one hand the local part of their campaigns and on the other hand they do very good standing army compared to all armies in the release here I think that's a few differences but it was Isis is simply a conquering having force that obviously sees as its ultimate objective a Caliphate across the whole of the the archives and that is absolutely not what the played in wasn't good it was about tall and he had that they say five times more Wars declare on him than he declared on others and what you started is established an economic bloc that would ultimately force peaceful on Britain he was in the 1885 terminating in 913 campaign unfolding Deming and 150 and a he both of Peaks a genuine peace to be to the autocracies of Europe and the the Russians being Austrians the Prussians and so the authorities and to turn it down each time because a vehicle their gates with an e they felt threatened constantly said by the meritocracy that he that he present and the Americas context Mira talks is a very important one for thousands of years and that you've been commissioned that you had in society rank inspectors in society part was dependent entirely on who your father grandfather and with the pony or allowed to to get to any status in society there were people competing at 26 marshals and some 30 list who were the sons of barrel Cooper's lien keepers and bailiffs and and other people they were into servants and peasants and never happy before the idea that suddenly is extraordinary amounts of creative energy London I need so the sad to shape your relative your own volition with society actually you could thirteen you could add an extra one fourteen absolutely who he claimed his father and had a war appointment when you look into it seems the Royal Norma capture actually over the top of the that is not like this is posing as well there is not still in light and advanced to the better world that is being offered by Isis in Spencer it's a bit of a mystic dystopia amazing friend of mountains and people being metal cages so it didn't try it doesn't the tuba to do in my opinion had a completely diverge on on this one Andrew was there a a compare and contrast theme or themes to be brought out between Singaporean and with the 14th century earlier yes they get there is he but he very much also saw himself as lit up and it was easier and was Democrats by any stretch of imagination now Pauline had a more complicated system this course important of all people into the macro and he was a upper middle class and the upper class mining ability so course I know without answers this is performed room and therefore he had to value very much secret has his regime supported by people communal for any factors in a sense the meritocracy and but look at the Latin slender of the regime the Mr style is very reminiscent of water or some difference is doing an essential sale early so I'm curious to know how you feel and that thing women's rights under the Napoleonic Code seems like maybe there were some reversals from the French Revolution some rights that have been granted that Napoleon stand didn't waver yeah yet his in sculpture for women in Korea we've had been ugly retribution and this cozy living organism attractiveness it was a it was a very patriarchal society it was also tough on the children the if you were you have a happy father's permission to marry up observers by thinking teeth and you finances we'll all very much come from gated of me or the father and this is the country of course terms we've seen folks six said opiates say that it was a war song sexist country the present example every day but nonetheless yes women were very encouraged female education but only very much in areas where they what do you make of the bombings behavior at the end of the bell model of the common sense dignity kind of abandoned his post and and fled if you that's real or what do you know that and yes this I guess missing some lonesome detail in text first one and my focus also have B but in comprehensively totally lots of erotic it he stayed where he was in the cattle and it was what you did in those days was to was to get back up on your own supplies action fascinatingly that is not what the process did the two days earlier of the latter being beaten words and polio lots of apples and Russians stadiums right flank was about 14 recently written there Sabrina Prince was because the person's ultimately we need did not do me and they can totally counterintuitive against all the early 19th century military know which was they went north and stayed in contact with the angular al-abadi which whether the latest Able's device in a distracted decision of the 19th century I think is what because it actually give you the chance to work to win that battle as far as the latter walking was concerned the key things begin to get back to Paris which is also because forty days of the Egyptian campaign monotony Russian land the Normans try to create enough support that it's ready to carry on Ward five aspects that wasn't much over here sorry you mission that sort indicates ammonium encountered himself around the wrong kind of evil so for the benefit of future leaders what were their flaws and what strategies would he have implemented better to unbelieve the get yes for the first one is deletion to the trusted his almost totally move onyx family tree of his probably imitate his gives to the sisters became became ruling duchesses and lately one of his brothers became King of Naples and then thinking is saying and they were all University rubbish adults and and finding sentient our time whinging complaining that they hadn't got more power more money and more grand Michael's and the rest that there's one of the party another great joke sorry I'm just a party where at the end of it and this is a little drug family he shrugged his shoulders lot of a net adhering at endless complaints and said anyone would have thought the diag misappropriated the legacy in our name Collin okay but since everything is is them he should have used the concept meritocracy and for all of the top positions including the regnant position the other one is not seeing would force through it's done this Texas policy he deducted a more free trade for the red Adams nyan nyan French and translation but he didn't take the carpet Hospital he stuck with the companion and statist perfectionism which forced him to get into walls one gets will still respect another against clutter that he didn't mean to and so so business suitable things were so funny it had the right man in the right place and compounding failed to do that police apparently ultimately yes you are DPS and made reference to oranges on thinking historically but many social scientists will use historical examples or they'll use history and case study and wonder do you see a distinction between using history case study and thinking historico Lee is their specific way of thinking at historical repeating and if so what's the virtue of the latter and I think it's very important a little history doesn't repeat itself historians repeat each other and even though you can never get the same situation twice you do get our kids of it and some people interview that it can take you down to particular bond articles and even and service is the classic example you saw NASA as general NASA and another Mussolini or another Hitler figure chicken people Seussical nationalist leader it wasn't some threat to world peace and so there is a danger in including historicizing of any situation you can see very sales potentials daughter is a hate its wedding that people would say and it's turtle alive today he will do XYZ Peter since he can't hurt and so I do I must admit whenever any spectators allows me to write about all Vincent certainly done anything yet but I've got a Molina mortgage things Mex Li I do think that there are very very big problems with useful parameter about taking six days to get to the place we're calling the dive and it's very impressive to look at the volume information that you are covered and and that you've simulated how long did it take you to work on this book to get the information and in complete this project between the signature of the contract and the publication of the book and 27 years and but you're just going to if you go to 53 battlefields that takes a lot time I went to 80 and 89 different my prism sets papers and research institutes and we had to get in Paris for a bit to work on me in the Sheep nationality Commissioner that photo of his papers and things like that say it just does have that out but having said that I have already written see the books on the pending beforehand so if it's an area that I was uncomfortable is there earlier than if something which is not the most assembly right here if your one-handed ass we've got time for you to work quick message one-on-one I'm curious to hear what you think about the differences and the rise of power the toilet hitter that both in foreigners and how they achieve what they did rising in a different country yes absolutely true there were things very came from from from the outside there is one of a ruling they were pages see your that a bridge Astoria's to prevent opponents of millions of proto Hitler figure you know look closely at this other ven include close down the stress oh yes but actually the shuttle would be percent effective survive in the both independent time will you it wasn't each state they had wanting a monthly superb photographer big villagers who were there were exactly as you were policemen per head of population under the podium of the mayor and great day it's a certain death I think also to learn absolutely there for their ruthlessness in the same way the very sort of racial motives for the wasn't actually the people's his campaigns especially prolific campaign piety was was genocide when it came to being black objects American ideas for Riddick what happened whatever he wasn't personally their self but they won't be killed because they'll wrap in liver and French and as revolution and they wanted zoom to have their contenders it was water Olympics morsel is actually a Jaffa Massacre was was an appalling one basically in Boston 299 the people who had been captured earlier and promised not to fight against the French Republic were captain Cicely state a tightening in French public and a very mathematical you need and then each at whatever and and together will school were religiously at 18th century but what you didn't have was the same kind of Messianic genocide and concept of Leighton's well you didn't have him metal he didn't have the eleven powers was to be ruled by the people who live there as much to be possible he didn't impose some kind of agenda government and so actually the more you look at these two men so she posted in terms their personal relations and the other things that their their attitude to enlightenment you just see that one is a benevolent civilized benevolent dictator the others time for one more question Fred Segal I see your hand twitching no it gives my better judgment I've got a microphone I may never get back well to say that sir I didn't it strikes me that you'd be much much too kind to Napoleon Paul Johnson mayor overdone in one direction scene was a part of it but the police require a model for every every authoritarian ruler who followed him he said Tony said the I mean created the idea Europe could be ruled as a whole that it could be conquered yes there are enormous differences but there are enormous similarities between as well and well I think you agree that Europe Romney group as a whole I think we really want these well get tricked out of Union I talk to you as a physical life man and but probably was a beautiful screen lesson in the course of advice Chris Berg I founded this beautiful dachshunds were tender bye and the first term I often see eye to eye on the system and lead a good
