"Napoleon: Lessons for Today's Leaders" - Andrew Roberts

at Pepperdine you'll not only see policy differently you'll see your future differently from here too [Music] generally my name is Pete Peterson and I'm the interim dean here at Pepperdine School of Public Policy and it's a great honor and pleasure to have you all here for what is our first Wilburn distinguished lecture here at the School of Public Policy now some of you might be asking what is a Graduate School of Public Policy doing hosting an esteemed historian discussing a man who lived over two centuries ago after all it is the purpose policy school to educate and graduate the next generation of technocrats and bureaucrats that go on to work in government using the latest techniques and quantifiable telling policy analysis well yes we certainly do care about those things here at Pepperdine but what makes that program unique why do say you'll see public policy differently from here is our understanding that the best public leaders must consider an array of factors in creating what can normatively be called good public policy one of these factors is history and whether we're talking about land-use policy here in Malibu or trade agreements with Asia policy makers should not only know the present factors affecting these decisions they should also be able to think historically in their policy-making process to know the one the pressures to solve today's problems are present today they can ride on your desk after years and sometimes decades and centuries of development at the School of Public Policy as we approach our 20th anniversary no one associated with our program understood this better than Nina Meredith Jim over when I took on this role that is interim dean over the summer I asked for the school's founding documents as a way of thinking historically about my upcoming year in that research I stumbled upon this quotation from a memo outlining the future of the Pepperdine School of Public Policy quote it is truly unique among public policy programs it includes a stronger emphasis on culture history and the brain book's theme than others I see it has a breadth in core courses which can be a hallmark unfold those words were written by Jim to then president of Pepperdine David Davenport back in January of 1997 and it is this vision and person we celebrate in the distinguished wilderness lecture series along with great friends of the School of Public Policy rosemary bukata and Beatrice Restivo we are also honored to be joined by Pepperdine University more remember kitty cat and so he wanted to sneak in and out I would be remiss not to note that we are also joined by dean emeritus junior learn being thank you for joining us here tonight so not further ado as Napoleon might say I want to bring up our Ronald Reagan professor of public policy dr. Steve Hayward to introduce tonight's lecture thank you so much for coming I compete insa my very great pleasure and honor to introduce the inaugural lecture in the Wilburn distinguished lecture series though I will link to others to ponder the possible symmetries between the dating sake of this lecture the will done and the subject of tonight's lecture Napoleon certainly I think is fair to say that the Wilburn has been a great captain in subduing the mountain countryside over the years on behalf of peper time without suffering either in a Moscow intern or a Moscow in a retreat or a water balloon broader than just technical skill and that the highest practitioners the art of policy understand the importance of character principles of individual genius and even in a word it's hard to define statesmanship I'm a parent raised a continent of church here a person of whom are lectures - written several books and apparently economy in Churchill managing his memoirs or one goes something like this in the station between politics and policy is diminished as the point of view is raised at the summit true politics and Coliseum are one so speaking of the summit I'd like to think it's not really happen stance but in fact as an attribute of problems that the school of other policy is at the point of the Pepperdine campus with the highest view to getting troubled and aggressive faculty anyone who doesn't understanding genius in world affairs often requires a genius and so we were thrilled that andrew roberts was able to include Pepperdine on a very busy itinerary here in the United States this week if the author editor of 19 books each one of them a Jim he's a graduate of Cambridge is presently a visiting professor at the horse the part of the King's College in London and more institutions besides that he's lectured at numerous major American universities appeared in countless newspapers magazines and TV shows and recipients so many literary and academic Awards that if I were to go through the roster even we have clubs that's left for his lecture so it won't that's what the internet is for these days see Andrew - Robert net there are two things you don't appear though it's very briefly on anger runners done and early it's not yet that I saw one of us of one of the spaces books called the storm of war I reached number two of the New York Times bestseller list and look that is the inspiration for his lectures - Napoleon alive was not only a winner of Los Angeles Times biography prize in 2014 but was recently optioned by Harvey Weinstein for a possible TV series so my name is Easton was about the lessons of Napoleon so please give a warm Pepperdine waves welcome to andrew roberts it's a great honor to be invited to address you this evening King here is about my fish the machine on classic spear and thank you very much indeed for those very kind words feed mostly to my book cotton on to on the vessel of it is mainly by a book about Michael Jackson there's very informative talk I wonder fellow British historian Sir Michael Howard as pointed to Napoleon's development of mandatory conscription as being a major turning point in warfare and I wonder what your assessment of his development of mandatory conscription is well and it has been ever really the debate or mass who's the French revolutionary concept 1793 labels in seventies or down laurel 1798 predates Napoleon by a year so I don't think almost all British historians paint the video and likely the name is might American but in a different and but it's not fair to depend on earlier however
