[Music] i am really excited to share this video with you today because i've been looking through some of the highlights from the 2020 beijing motor show and this is the only motor show this year to actually be held and i'm really glad that they made it work because there are some really crazy concepts in cars in this year's motor show and in this video i'm gonna show you why i'm considering moving to china to work as a designer there is a lots of craziness to cover here so let's dive in [Music] hey welcome back to the channel is the sketch monkey here first of all i want to announce something really cool from pole star i'm sure you've heard about this already polestar has made the announcement that they are putting the beautiful cool precept concept into production and there's already 130 people working on getting this into production the precept will be manufactured in polestar's brand new carbon neutral facility in china and i can't wait to see the final product from concept to production and i really hope that they don't lose that stance in the beautiful proportions of the car so polestar please don't change anything now what i'm gonna do in this video is go through my top five favorite concept cars from the show there are different reasons why they are my favorite some are really weird and some are really cool but we're gonna start with the song sun ss dolphin and i think you can see what this car is inspired by of course it is the corvette c1 but this car right here is all electric it has a 16 kilowatt hour battery pack supplying electric energy for up to 62 miles it's not that impressive actually is pretty bad but it has a 0 to 60 time of 4.9 seconds which is okay for an electric car it's kind of in the 12 second range of mid 90s cars if you have an electric car if it doesn't go zero to 600 five seconds something is off with the car and this chinese electric corvette c1 can be yours for just eighty six thousand six hundred and thirteen dollars and now let's have a look at the design of this thing right here so here it is the beautiful dolphin and you can see that they do have a little dolphin up here if we zoom in you can see that this is where the whole uh name comes from you can see that there is actually a chrome dolphin in the hood of this car which is amazing this is a cool looking car i mean it looks weird and i'm gonna show you exactly why it looks weird and it looks exactly like a corvette c1 i'm really surprised that they're even allowed to create designs like this without any legal trouble because it's almost an exact copy but let's have a look at this car from a straight side view you can see where the the the problems are starting to come up here it's of course the proportions of the car you can see the front of the car stretches out like i don't know what all the way to this point and then we have you know there is nothing to to to to keep the front of the car up so what needs to happen here if we were to fix this really quickly here not some substantial redesign what needs to happen is we need to bring this whole thing let's copy this whole area right here and move it back this way and by doing that we shorten the hood we also shorten the overhang in the front and we bring back a little bit normal proportions in the front so that it doesn't look like it's stretching it it's forehead out in some weird way so that's the only issue that i have with this design other than that i mean just look at the details and this is what i what i what's so interesting with chinese design right now it seems like they're having a lot of fun designing cars in china right now because this new electric market all of these concepts that i'm gonna show you by the way are all electric so there is a huge market for electric cars in china right now and i think they are actually a little bit ahead of the rest of the world when it comes to electrification of of their their their market of course so this is the first concept i want to show you this is the uh song sun ss dolphin of course and on to the next one which is from the same company actually and it's called the song sun summer as the dolphin was inspired by the c1 this is clearly inspired by the volkswagen t1 from the 60s this is the song sun summer here such a happy name isn't it it has a foldable roof tent same powertrain under the hood as the asus dolphin which means zero to 60 in about same time actually as the dolphins of 4.9 you can now take a camper van and push it up to 60 in 4.9 seconds but the range is still about 60 miles so you won't come that far with it still pretty impressive for a brand new electric camper van with this cool design here unfortunately this is not coming to the us or europe for that matter since it will only be available for the chinese market maybe that's for the better looking at the design of this summer here we can see that they took his song had a little bit more effort into making it different from the original car which is of course the volkswagen t1 by actually giving this car a hood which is interesting because it's an electric car so it doesn't really need a hood and the original doesn't have a hood so this is sort of an design exercise maybe it's for space interior space or something like that but same thing here it just looks like the designers in china are having a blast designing these cars number three on my list is the best tune b70 i'm not sure i pronounced that correctly but it's straight up a no shame copy of the cadillac ct4 in the front and the ct5 in general proportions of the car the new b70 looks like a big luxury sedan but doesn't really pack a punch with a tiny turbocharged 1.5 liter making just 169 horsepower but hey you can get it in a six-speed manual the new best tuned b70 may look like the ct5 but it is in fact smaller than the cadillac with 189 inches compared to the 194 for the caddy and the b70 will go on sale in china this year having a look at the b70 here and it's not a you know an ugly car and it's a simple reason for that it's the reason is it's a straight-up copy of a cadillac and the cadillac is a good looking car which i've said in the ct5 wagon redesign that i did a long time ago you can see here that the front is pretty much a ct4 with this headlight treatment right here the grille is a little bit unique i mean if you want to call it unique it's different from the cadillac and it has a different graphic elements inside of it there looking at this car from a straight side view here for example you can see that it's all about the ct5 here you even have the same kink right here in the back of the car which some people don't like in the ct5 i think it creates a little bit of a personality for the ct5 i don't have anything against it but here it even looks like this piece which is plastic on the ct5 is in fact glass if i'm not mistaken which means that it actually has a function in the chinese cadillac that doesn't occur in the u.s version overall i think it's a beautiful looking car and of course this is not coming to the us another thing i want to mention here with the b70 is the interesting way they uh use the trend which is putting the main headlights in the bumpers you can see that this right here is the main headlight and here the rest this whole piece here is just running lights cool interesting way of having what the hyundai's and kiosks are doing right now which putting the lights somewhere in this area down here the main light and then you can stylize whatever you want on top of that to create this unique identity of each brand number four on the list i think this is probably my favorite concept of the whole show it's just a cool looking car and that is a great wall aura futurist concept this is a car that was developed within the aura brand of great wall motors and this means that it's an all-electric car and it's called the futurist concept for now this is just still a concept and there is no information on the powertrain yet but great wall motors seems very interested in bringing this into production and i say go for it it looks great it's almost like a modernized version of the trabant and i love it so let's have a closer look at this great wall motors here i want to show you why i like it so much first of all it's a very simple design it's a clean and elegant and almost classy looking car especially with this alpena style wheels that they have on here and then you have a bit of some copy going on here in the front because that's what you know chinese cars are mostly known for copying some parts of western cars but then putting their own kind of spin on it you can see that the front here looks pretty much like a mustang machi and i don't think that's by mistake but looking past that which by the way i think it works on this car it looks good but then you have all these beautiful details such as this bumper which looks modern but at the same time it looks vintage it looks like the old chrome bumpers that you had on the front of troubons for example and this is also mirrored here down here so you have two beautiful lines like this and this line down here continues into the body of the car and then goes around the whole car it's just a beautiful cool looking concept and again if i was a design student i would want to focus on china and get to design cars like this from scratch instead of going to bmw and just design a kidney that turns out to be a complete failure last but not least is the hong koi e h and this is available with two different motors both with plenty of power the low spec version features two electric motors one on each axle the standard layout of electric cars rated at 215 horsepower each and this turns out to be 430 horsepower combined not too bad it's decent but not too exciting however the top trim model gets a 329 horsepower motor for the rear axle and this in combination with the front has a power output of 544 horsepower for the seven seater and it gives it a zero to 60 time in the low four second range and on top of that conquist says it can travel up to 300 miles on one charge these stats however have not been independently verified and these are just numbers coming straight from the manufacturer so we don't really know for sure that it can do 300 miles and same thing for this model as with the rest here this model is already in production and it's only available for the chinese market but let's have a look at the design of this thing i think it looks pretty cool to be honest with you it looks like a hyundai mixed with a rolls and i see a little bit of bmw in there i think that has to do with the with the front grille there but it looks cool it has a presence to it and i actually really like the two-tone so you have the white here and then it combines with the silver on the lower part of the car and this thing in the front this is one detail that i love here is this long led that goes right here this whole piece is an led so it looks at night i can only imagine how cool that would look with those long led strips that follows the lines of the front of the car and here we have the more traditional way of using the main headlight integration as i was talking about earlier in a more traditional way with having it a big led a big headlight right there in the bumper and then you have the the identity of the car you can play around and do whatever you want with the top of the lighting situation in front of the face here to create a very strong brand identity for the car and also in the rear it has some really cool lighting going on here it's a massive led assembly right here this too you have a lot of small leds going in this little part right here and this probably looks very cool when it's lit up at night as well and gives it a strong identity you also have a very distinct c pillar right there and overall it's just cool that we have a massive luxury seven seat suv with a 300 mile range all electric and it just shows what kind of the future is going to hold when it comes to electric cars and those are my five favorites from the beijing motor show there are three other cars that i want to mention though the first one is the beijing radiance concept and this has a claimed range of 497 miles it's have level 4 autonomous driving when it hits production which is comparable to tesla's autopilot feature and the design reminds me a lot of the lucid air design with almost a single shell design and i love the way they've integrated the lights and leds in this car and this is of course a concept so i'm i'm i doubt that these leds will look this cool in the production version of the beijing radiance the second one i want to talk about is the chorus milestone concept it has a giant screen as a windshield so when you look at it from the inside you're actually looking at a see-through screen and the design of this car it has a very angular design style of this car it's a cool style and to me this is a very russian style car when i was studying car design in italy we had a couple of russians studying in the same class as me and they have a very particular style when it comes to sketching they have a very angular looking style with a lot of 90 degree angles and sharp edges i can almost guarantee that this was designed by someone from the russian design philosophy could be wrong and it has an extremely tiny greenhouse but entering and going out and in of this car is pretty easy because there's no b pillar and the way the door opening works here makes it a lot easier even if the greenhouse is small you can still get in and out of the car very easily this of course is also still just a concept and not a lot of details on this car but some this is one of these cars that just is so different when it comes to design that i think this some company if not chorus should pursue a style direction with this style because it would create a very very strong brand identity the last mention of this video i know it's a really long one it's the ford sculpture now ford is previewing its design language by showing off an interesting sculpture looking a little bit like a blade runner style flying mustang in pearl white you also have an almost horizontal fin on top of the rear fender almost like a tribute to the 1950s car designs it could be a celebration of the opening of ford's new design center in china which i kinda hope it is i'm not a huge fan of this shape especially the graphics in the front it looks as if it's been punched in the face it's a bit too flat nose and looks dated to be honest but it's an interesting way of displaying new design ideas by ford and those are my thoughts on the beijing 2020 motor show i love the creativity that comes out of china now nowadays and i think they are having so much fun with a new platform of a skateboard full of batteries where they can build whatever they want on top of and as i said if i was a design student and looking to get into car design i would probably really honestly focus on going to china because there you would have the opportunity now to build up a brand the design and the identity from scratch as i said instead of working for bigger established brands like mercedes bmw or here in the us dodge or chevy or whatever ford and if you go to china you have a bigger opportunity to be part of something and have a bigger impact on the brands over there that's just a feeling that i have right now i hope you enjoyed this video i'm the sketch monkey thanks so much for watching i hope to see you next time take care
