uh hello um everyone uh sorry i've never done this before my name is principal andrews and i'm here because there's something that happened at my school under my watch that will haunt me for the rest of my life something i'm hoping i can prevent from ever happening again after what happened talking to you all is the least i can do i've always considered my town to be a good safe town far from the influence of people who mean harm but with the internet i suppose nowhere is really safe from people who mean harm i met eric first eric was the oldest kid in his family when he entered school i knew he was going to be valedictorian he had been playing every sport and excelling in them since he was a young young kid he got straight a's in every class and he took every extra-curricular he could it goes without saying that eric was surrounded by friends everybody loved him and everyone had high hopes for a bright future for eric when his little brother daryl entered high school it was surprising they were even related daryl was a bit of a quiet kid he didn't do sports or extracurriculars and it was obvious he had a bit of a hard time making friends that being said it wasn't the kid's fault and no one should have been surprised by how different these boys were because their upbringing was unique to say the least eric and daryl's parents were strict in every sense of the word even though the boys were 14 and 16 they weren't allowed to watch any movies that had above a g rating they weren't allowed to have social media accounts except for one to talk to family on and that account was monitored every single day by their parents the boys weren't allowed to go out with their friends unsupervised that meant after football or basketball victories eric had to go straight home and not celebrate with his friends now i'm a parent too and i know how scary it is letting your kids be independent but i feel bad for the boys there's nothing worse than being the only kid in your friend group that has no freedom you get made fun of and you miss out on a lot of stuff so when daryl started acting out a bit it didn't come as a surprise to anyone daryl would sneak off during class and go into the bathroom or hide behind the gym with his friends and quite frankly his friends weren't the sharpest pencils in the box when daryl disappeared with his friends he got to see stuff on social media he had never seen before he saw girls doing viral dances he heard songs with lyrics that would make his parents heads explode he even started to pick up on cool fashion trends he had missed out on eric had a similar discovery with his friends it was like being introduced to this cool new world that he had no idea existed eric loved the fashion videos the comedy videos and the girls dancing i mean he was a high school boy after all but he was a bit put off by the viral challenge videos i mean there were videos of people eating hot peppers and then touching their eyes eric's friends would laugh while the people on screen would dunk their heads in water and scream but eric felt a bit uncomfortable he thought the people looked stupid doing the challenges and he couldn't ever imagine doing it for a few views but daryl daryl had a bit of a different perspective daryl's little group of friends involved three other students nate ray and eddie they hadn't totally accepted daryl yet and he felt like a bit of an outcast so when they laughed at people doing challenges daryl laughed too he wanted to fit in he wanted to be liked and popular he couldn't quite believe how many views the videos were getting and how many followers these random people were getting because of the stupid little challenges that night when they got home eric and daryl talked about the challenges eric called them stupid and told daryl never to do them and daryl just rolled his eyes his brother had always been the goody two-shoes and the favorite so daryl figured eric wouldn't like the challenges daryl promised not to do them but that promise only lasted so long the next day eric was waiting outside for their mother to pick them up but he couldn't find daryl anywhere he walked behind the school to find daryl on top of a set of stairs on a skateboard with a blindfold on he yelled for his brother to stop and caught him just before he went down the stairs he yelled at daryl asking him what the heck he thought he was doing but daryl just laughed and said bro it's the blindfold stair set challenge relax a ton of people are doing it but eric didn't relax he couldn't believe that daryl was being so irresponsible he told his brother he could have hit his head or broken an arm or worse and daryl just shrugged as they walked around to the front of the school eric made daryl promise he wouldn't do anything dangerous but for real this time daryl just rolled his eyes and agreed but deep down daryl's heart was pounding he had actually been nervous for that stunt with his friends but he was worried if he didn't do it his friends would think he was lame for the first time he had people that liked him and he wasn't willing to risk that no matter what so behind eric's back daryl kept doing the challenges with his friends he did an eating hot peppers challenge that led to him jumping in the school's pond just to get his eyes to stop burning and that night yeah he was pretty much in the bathroom the entire night that video got him a little bit of fame around school and daryl loved it he went from being the loser that no one liked to the funny person that everyone wanted to be around but in the caption of the video daryl had been sure to put one thing if you show this to my lame brother i'll never be able to make a video again i mean it to his surprise it actually worked everyone kept the video a secret from eric and daryl kept making videos with his friends eric was shocked that daryl suddenly had friends following him everywhere but eric was even more shocked when some of his own friends stopped hanging out with him he couldn't figure out why his friends stopped showing him fun videos or why he heard people whisper narc every once in a while at him eric started to feel lonely and isolated in a way he had never experienced before so eric started to stray from his usual personality he stopped following the rules like he normally did and he decided it was time for him to get to the bottom of his brother's actions eric got a job after school and lied to his parents about being in a club using his money over the course of a few weeks he scraped up just enough to buy an old phone in a plan for the first time he was going to have completely uncensored access to the internet and to all his friends posts but he wasn't ready for what he was about to see his brother's page had hundreds of thousands of followers and the message in the bio said don't tell my lame brother the videos made eric's stomach churn there were videos of daryl doing all kinds of crazy challenges challenges that seriously put his life at risk challenges where daryl was running into traffic with a blindfold challenges where daryl was eating expired food challenges where daryl was jumping off of buildings it made eric's heart pound just looking at it but the truth was daryl didn't love the challenges he was doing in fact they scared the crap out of him when eric was in the middle of watching daryl's videos for the first time daryl was on the other side of the school doing the next challenge or should i say being coerced into doing it he stood on the roof of the school with sweaty palms had he told him all he had to do was jump off the side grab the flagpole and then try to do a somersault before landing on the ground but daryl was nervous he hadn't wanted to do the last 10 challenges let alone this one hadn't he proven himself enough he thought no one in the school thought he was lame daryl told eddie he wasn't going to do the challenge and eddie rolled his eyes he called daryl a wimp a girl and a bunch of other terrible things i'd rather not repeat daryl started down the ladder trying to play it cool trying to tell himself that tomorrow eddie would forget about him wimping out but when he got to the bottom of the ladder he found eric there eric yelled at his brother for his actions telling him he was scared for his life daryl tried to play it off by telling eric to calm down but eric wouldn't he threatened to tell their parents if daryl ever did it again and for the first time daryl promised he wouldn't and he actually meant it he had his friends he didn't have to keep doing challenges for people to like him but the next day at school eddie and his crew found daryl during lunch daryl said he was done with the challenges his friends made fun of him and tried to talk him into doing more and when daryl refused they had an idea just one more challenge before he was done for good and the challenge would be one of the first internet challenges the cinnamon challenge daryl agreed he thought that maybe after this his friends would stop bugging him they snuck off into the bathroom and daryl popped the cinnamon in his mouth but what happened next left a stain on the town forever daryl couldn't breathe at first his friends were laughing but then they stopped they ran out of the bathroom calling for help as daryl collapsed on the floor gasping for breath and in the ambulance daryl died his parents were crushed eric was crushed and he blamed himself for not stopping it sooner his friends got reprimanded and kicked out of school but looking back i don't think they were really his friends at all look i understand that all these challenges feel fun and a lot of people get peer pressured into doing them but they aren't worth the risk daryl had no idea something as innocent as a spoonful of cinnamon could kill him if you do want to do something with your friends it's best to find an adult and ask them if it's safe to do
