my dad got in a car accident and left us forever i was 15 years old at the time and my brother cabell was two years old mom was in a state of shock too our life was falling apart the good thing was that dad had left us a huge inheritance enough to feed us comfortably before i could graduate from college and get a job so i thought that we wouldn't have to worry about finances but i was wrong my mom was planning something else behind our backs the morning on her part was just an act to make us believe that she was affected too she secretly planned to take all the inheritance money and leave me and cabell behind with nothing one day i woke up to an empty house there was no usual voice of mom coming from downstairs and a few minutes later a crying cabell walked into my room i asked him what was wrong but he just kept crying i called for mom but got no response my stomach started churning as a bad feeling started settling inside me i took cabell's hand and walked downstairs to find that most of the things were gone the house was as empty as it could get i searched the whole house but i couldn't find mom anywhere in the end i found a letter on the dining table i opened it i had to look for a part-time job or we were going to starve moreover if i left for school every day then who's going to look after cabell in the meantime apart from everything i had to take care of cooking cleaning and everything else too just how was i going to do it all i started searching online for part-time jobs that would allow me to work from home i applied for a few of them and waited for an answer meanwhile i looked up how i could continue my studies online there was a way of course and i couldn't be happier about it it was also cheaper than the traditional schooling system so i got myself enrolled in the distance learning program i also got a response from one of the companies where i had applied they were the only ones who were not looking for educational qualifications or experience so i got a freelancing job with them the pay was good enough to support cabell and my expenses and this is how my new life started my day would start with waking up and doing all the household chores after making sure that cabell was engaged i used to sit down to work after finishing my work i used to study this was the routine that my life fell into for the next couple of years then cabell started going to school too and i used to drop him off and pick him up every day that was the only time when i could get out of the house otherwise i used to be holed up in my room all day either working or studying one day i was returning home after dropping off cabal when i bumped into someone oh i'm sorry i quickly apologized and looked up to see the person's face it was a familiar girl from the looks of it she'd recognized me too sarah she asked in shock do you remember me i was your classmate in high school i racked my brain for her name i knew her i had even talked to her many times but i still could not recall her name i am madison she said seeing my struggle it's good to see you after so long what have you been up to you suddenly dropped out of school i sighed it's a long story i have all the time in the world she smiled i felt somewhat warm this was the first time in years meeting a person like this i invited her over to my house and told her everything that had and as years passed i got promoted and placed in a high position now my salary was not just enough it was much more than i had use of thus i started saving and in no time the money piled up and i guess i became a rich person now i could afford to live in luxury and give everything to my brother really madison had been an angel in disguise for me she always used to say that it was my own hard work that brought me here but if i hadn't met her that day perhaps i would have been still holed up at my home life was going smoothly and i was happy after a long time but just my luck that my mother had to make an appearance to shatter my perfect life she had the nerve to show her face at our home after all those years after abandoning us i am i am broke she cried i invested your father's money but instead of profit it went into loss i had to take out a huge loan but i was unable to pay it back they evicted me from my apartment and seized all my assets i had nowhere to go wow do i look like i care i laughed don't you remember what you wrote in your letter all those years ago if i was old enough to look after myself at the age of 15 you should be able to do it too right don't say that she my mom deserved this or not but at least my brother and i are at a better place in our life all thanks to her
