this is my ancient tablet it contains a hidden coded secret if you're able to decipher the code follow its directions you will receive the distinction of being the greatest archaeological mind on my entire youtube channel can you crack the code [Music] wonders with charlie is created in partnership with wonderopolis.org a website by the national center for families learning lately i've been studying the neo-babylonian empire and i've been trying to figure out how we know so much about this time that was so long ago and the answer is this cuneiform cuneiform it's an ancient style of writing and archaeologists have found thousands and thousands of tablets with cuneiform writing on it that describes what life was like a super long time ago so like here's a tablet with some cuneiform writing that describes how someone was having trouble solving a math equation using the pythagorean theorem on this tablet someone was describing how god was gonna send a flood onto earth and destroy the entire planet and this tablet is a receipt for chickpeas so it really runs the gamut but here's how you read and write it all right cuneiform symbols look pretty complicated but really they're just different combinations of three different shapes vertical wedges horizontal wedges and diagonal wedges so this symbol right here is the combination of three horizontal wedges and one vertical wedge and it represents the sound m or me i don't know m or me it'll stay right there so cuneiform is a syllabic script which means each symbol represents a particular sound so here's the symbol for pe we have na we have it air stuff like that so theoretically to write any word that we want using uniform first we have to split it up into its different sounds like the word cat we'll split it up into k and at then we can use some sort of a document like this to find the symbols that represent those sounds so here's the symbol for ka here's the symbol for at we have the word cat in cuneiform it seems pretty easy but sometimes you're going to find that this symbol for a sound you're looking for does not exist so like my name charlie will split it into cha r and lee there is no cuneiform symbol for the sound cha so we'll have to find something similar like za there is a symbol for r no symbol for lee so we'll use list so technically this is zarli but unfortunately that's the closest thing we're going to get to writing charlie using cuneiform but keeping all this in mind theoretically you can write any word that you wanted using cuneiform like this is how you write the phrase free taco this is cuneiform for turtle party and this is how you use cuneiform to write the phrase banana slamajamma which brings us back to my secret ancient tablet with cuneiform coated on the front of it holding a secret message if you follow its directions you will receive the distinction of being the greatest archaeological mind on my entire youtube channel can you crack the code if you'd like to give it a shot i've linked this translation document in the description below which you can also use to write your name or any other word that you want in cue to form best of luck thanks for watching this video special shout out to my patrons everyone supporting me on patreon i really appreciate it here's shout outs from the last video if you'd like a shout out say hello in the comments and subscribe finally thanks so much for watching and i'll see you in the next one [Music]
