what got you to doing this documentary why would you just kind of like put all the emotions out there and lay everything on the table for strangers to see and anyone to see like i've told people before if you had a picture of like 20 people he would be the last one that you your eyes would be drawn to but everyone in the photo would know that that's the best person in the group and so i wanted to you know take a singular photograph of that person i never set out to make a documentary in my life it was always narrative stuff but i also never set out on outliving my brother it wasn't until 2012 which was four years after jordan had died that i started officially shooting the documentary which was me traveling to palm bay florida in my maroon toyota privia minivan with my 5d and a lav mic in a really crappy soft box so for the next few years i shot like 50 interviews and i didn't really know what to do with it yet and i didn't really know the structure of how to tell it i think it just needed time i don't know like some scripts that just need to bake they need to be in a crock pot you don't need to put them in a pan you know [Music] during the chaos of trying to figure out how to tell the story i finally owned up to being able to put myself in the documentary and not be a third party i mentally kind of checked out of everything else and i sat in my room for about two months i said no to a lot of jobs and i just transferred tapes vhs high 8 vhsc mini dv everything i'm basically just in the dark just watching memories kind of proving to myself that all this happened i finally found some help in the form of my friend andrew bradford and i think at that point that's when i hit the ground running [Music] and one cool aspect of the documentary was there was a few states that i just couldn't really get to and i reached out on twitter and facebook of just any cinematographers in the area if they would be willing to shoot an interview for me this is austin take one hey mom a few of the cinematographers i had never met they were open to go meeting the stranger and skyping me a stranger to them as well what's up man it's good to see you love you too i sought out every possible avenue of any paper trail any verbal any video any photos of anything jordan paul robinson we done yeah all right at that point i had close to 100 interviews we had shot in 10 states we had 1200 pages of medical documents i had transferred and digitized over 300 tapes of all formats i stopped counting because i suck at math but at that point there was like 450 plus hours of footage so it was a lot i guess it's just i don't know why it's just taking so long but everything that with this project it just comes when it comes i don't know how to force it so one of my filmmaker friends shay sizemore just gave me the note he said hey you eat a whale one bite at a time i'd wake up edit the doc go to my full-time job come back edit the doc go to bed sometimes get up edit the doc it's just non-stop it's easy to work seven years on something when you love somebody that much and not think twice when it's like but it's jordan [Music] the best brother you could have i think that's got a lot of power behind it like that's that to me is inspirational just hearing your brother jordan had such an impact on your life that you want to you know kind of preserve it with this story i mean i would love to not make this documentary i wish he was still alive but of course the fact that he's not and the fact that i get to tell his story through this documentary it's like just as a storyteller as a filmmaker there's nothing there's no better material than to talk about her than to do than the way i feel about my brother [Applause] [Music] you
