[Laughter] you talk to me sometime eh my brother has two jobs to cook and to marry a greek virgin voila have something to eat before you greek virgin oh my god rash somebody gave me the mating put some windex stuff please please my toe was as big as my face so why are you not going to find somebody she's not too old is she not told she won't go don't want to get money baby breeding machine let's have two volumes loud and louder your big ass girlfriend thanks julia sure hey tula excuse me do you know who's at the dry cleaners you're always at the beauty my husband bite me a lady they just support the boys they just like the boys and do whatever the voice they do now when did you call my mom what you're going i'm going to the jewel i didn't do it [Music] get married pops i promise oh it's true tula will never leave you [Laughter] pause please let's pause it's so funny and i want i want to let you guys know what i understand from so far it's my eyes it's here tula tulip is uh a beautiful greek girl who is in her 30s and all her life she's been told that she's going to run the restaurant no no she's been told that girls are supposed to get married have children you know marry a greek man have children and just cook cook you know the traditional woman beauty we were also told the same thing it's just that my mom i think because my mom was educated she did place emphasis on getting married because well childbearing years a lot of she knew as the woman's biological clock and the dangers that come with a lot of women getting having children although now you see it's not really a problem because of technology but you know then it was a lot of people when they crossed their 30s not 30 38 35 38 had a lot of difficulty getting pregnant and you also have to consider the family that they come from like if in our family women don't let's say you come from a family where women don't have children what easily right because their families like that you notice the women have really had just the same way you know the certain people have cancer in their family or some people have certain diseases there are some people whose family procreation having children isn't easy so they encourage those girls from such families to either start taking certain medications early or it's a it's a fact it's a scientific fact it's it's nothing new right so if you come from that kind of family maybe your mother is not going to come out right and tell you oh the women in our family are barren they don't have to they don't have children like oh you might want to consider getting married in your 20s and then having your children before the struggle of birth comes after in the later years so her mom was obviously the traditional greek wife married had children and helped her husband run the restaurant i noticed earlier the father has a favorite and that is nico the first son i didn't get the sister's name um the father i think someone called him costa he is so in love with his son his only son always kissing and hugging him i never saw him do that to the other two girls um tula is the one who's telling telling the telling the story of our life and everyone seems shocked i am already liking that auntie who's very nosy who came into the restaurant i was like why didn't you wait for me why did you wait for me you know that kind of wife who's wants to be with her husband and wants a husband she seems like she's in control she also has two children angelo and nikki you can see already as angela came into the diner she just hugged him and you know she was already criticizing her daughter you didn't come to make my hair like you can see that they treat boys and whole boys to a different standard than they do girls and that is so common in certain parts of even my home nigeria like i repeat obviously i re i've said this so many times i really give kudos to my mom in picking out my father because i never for once felt that way with my like i never felt my father had any regrets because my mom didn't have boys you know what i mean like we he bought us cars we were in karate we were in you know different um activities we went to the best schools he took us around the world on trips like it was beautiful it was it was a beautiful experience right for my relationship so i really i i noticed that the father is already complaining and thinking of sending his daughter back to back to greece because he's my daddy is not going to get married she's old at 30 i understand this completely because i grew up seeing and hearing this in my culture in nigeria by the time you're 20 i knew a lot of girlfriends who were married with your second child at 20 it wasn't anything new and some would straight out of high school get married have their children by the time you're 30 your kids are already like 12 years old or you know grown and they went back to school to get their their school degree so it it seemed like oh they've already they were already done with school and you begin to wonder like without seeing that was a pretty good plan you had there because they still got into the workforce they still pursue their careers it's just that they decided to get half get married earlier than we did you know what i mean but they still went on to accomplish so many other things it wasn't like they missed out on anything and the funny thing is that they did it with more with more support let me explain like there was this woman married woman in our school in our class she she got married i think she got married at 17 had her kids so by the time she was 35 and i was going into university at uh i think i was 17 when i was in first year yes and because in nigeria you go to school pretty early at 17 this woman was coming into school with the best cars with the best clothes we were i was year one law school and she was doing her thing she was the she was older yes in school but she had she would finish her club anytime there was a textbook she always had the textbook because she always had the money her husband was funding everything like she just and when we were graduating she was a lawyer too by the time yes i was a lawyer you know early too but she was also a lawyer and she went on to start her own law firm she didn't even have to struggle like a lot of students did because we had to article we had to work on this someone we had to do so many other things she just started because her husband had the money because she married early and she married a partner and she was done with kids but we were still coming out of school we didn't even have a husband we didn't have kids we were still start she was done with that so by the time she starts her law firm she could hire her own kids who would be going into universe i don't know this these people had a plan this people i'm telling you and now it looks like oh my god you're forcing but in those days they were like and looking at it now they were smart they were really smart those who decided to have their kids early and go back into something it wasn't a bad idea i cannot knock it because i've seen it work and i've seen how people who decided not to follow i've seen both sides like they decided to go into uh not get married go into school get their job graduate at 24 uh maybe take a few years working then they have their then they get into some of them are unable to have kids some of them never found spouses because there was they were busy trying to get into the workforce you know what i mean sometimes you're working so hard you don't even have time for the relationship anymore right and by the time you not meet the one he's probably coming with his own issues or you're now maybe in your 30s you didn't realize that your body might have a different biological makeup and you're unable to have kids that you go under this stressful like i've seen both sides i've seen it doesn't mean that because i'm painting a picture of how but i've seen both sides i've seen it work and i've seen it fail so um don't knock it just i'm just you know out there giving anyone any information that you feel getting married early is a bad idea listen i've seen it work i've seen it work and i've seen it fail so the individual is you know don't assume because they got married early and had kids they weren't unable to pursue their dreams uh-uh not true not true it works out for some i've seen it work it works out at an amazing rate in nigeria i'm telling you you guys and just because you think that they'd get divorced i've seen people who married in their 30s and were divorced two years later and i've seen those who married at 18 and they're still with their spouses you know like it it's there are no hard and fast rules just do you oh my gosh so i just had to get that all right let's go back play but it's useless to dream because nothing ever changes [Music] she's looking at the man oh my god is she still staring could have been you with that armor on her no that no that was uh pamela this is nancy [Laughter] here i am standing are your own private greek statue [Laughter] he laughed at her joke get some more coffee sure father is just that is so selfish mama you can fix her hair your hair looks nice the man is the head but the woman is the neck yeah she can turn the head yes yes i i like that my mom says that too what are you saying are you saying that tulu will get involved with drugs no but she's smart enough for a girl you think you're smarter than me huh no it's lucky for me i have you to tie my shoes she's looking at her mom like watch oh she went harry s truman college [Music] contacts on i don't put i don't i can't do it i could oh no no it came out i know i couldn't oh no glasses [Music] nice come to tell his side of the family oh god i can't for the big day sometime at the end of october mid november my cousin nikki made me this she tends to save things thing that parthenon backdrop that's optional yeah the thing is that we just want to keep it small it's like you'd rather go bankrupt than insult anyone from the church who knows how long i'm going to be alive oh my gosh okay come on okay are you hungry oh no i already ate okay i make you something okay [Laughter] rodney and harry and mary remember it we have a customer at the dry cleaners who's a custom jewelry designer so i spinal column you're lying stop it stop it what's my twin stomach another [Applause] is to another is my marriage killing dad tula your father is your father that's the way to put it my village so many wars turkish german and my mother my mother she said we're lucky we're lucky to be alive we're not lucky when they're telling us where we should live what we should eat we came here for you so you could so you could live [Music] love culture i love tradition it's so beautiful i don't believe in throwing things away to suit a modern ideal if it's not evil and it's not destructive keep it it's just it's beautiful i love culture i love i love it so much [Music] fresh baklava greek woman we may be lambs in the kitchen but we are tigers in the bedroom oh my god let that be the end of your speech she's given birth already oh my god tula's sister is a bursting machine [Music] oh how many people how many people in that room oh my god oh my goodness the dresses are crazy i'm a snow beast is that her side of the family as opposed to his side of the family [Music] [Laughter] they're spitting on her [Music] yeah you got it the root of the word miller comes from the greek word milo which is mean apple so there you go apple portugalis is orange oh our name puerto canos has come from the greek word porto cali which means orange we all different but in the end we all fruit don't let me cry that is so beautiful that is good my wife and me we have a gift that is beautiful that's what we they bought us a house [Music] [Applause] he looks great he looks greek [Music] i know i know but i promise you this you can marry anybody you want let's go oh my god she's living right next to her parents she lived right next he bought her a house closed he didn't want her to leave oh that is so sweet i saw so many similarities with similarities between the greek culture and the nigerian culture and we have big parties when we're having our weddings i i made my list my sister had to make her list to invite you know just give her a table maybe of 12 people my mother my listen he had she had a list as huge as a matter of fact she had more of her friends at my wedding than i did of my own friends because it's it's a party it's a joining of both families so she was like give me a 500 500 invitation cards i don't care what you do with yours it was so so it was just beautiful because so there is a belief when we have this weddings that there are people who were influential or played a huge role in your life when you were young growing up or played a huge role in your parents lives and just because you're having a wedding does not exclude them from being remembered it doesn't mean because you don't know that auntie specifically doesn't mean she didn't have a role let's say for instance your mother couldn't afford this is just an example your mother couldn't afford a hospital bill and then there was this kind to when she was giving birth to you and there was this kind auntie who gave her some money bought clothes but diverse things and some reason she is not the auntie that you see every single day in your life but she had a huge role she played in your you know coming into existence and helping your parents out it is a mar it's an insult for you to get married and love you she might not come for the wedding but you invite anyway that's that's how we we do things right you invite those your mother sisters your cousins definitely they're all going to be there then friends of your family friends who might have been supportive at some point in time even if it's a way past because not everyone could come into your life every single day but in our culture back home it was easy to do these things for one we had huge spaces of land every family like my my father's property can take a hundred people and you know what i mean so and there was land and there's space and when you have a wedding you're not just having one caterer your mother-in-law can bring her own cage and she has a designated spot your mother brings her own cage train she has this designated squad your uncle your favorite uncle who's will be in charge of drinks another uncle is in charge of drinks cousin like it was a huge family affair unlike here it's like the the the children the couple they're the ones hosting the whole family and back home that wasn't how it was done when you're like my niece my sister's child if my sister's child is getting married i'm gonna wake up and go like i'll take care of your wedding dress i'm taking care of the food how many people are you having you know or i'll take care of feed 100 people let me know and then i could give you the check or i can bring the literally caterer to the event so it what it was another person takes care of this because we are family it's not just you getting married we're getting married too it's our day it's our it's our day to show you how much we love you and to participate and take the weight of you it's the same thing when you have a baby i noticed here in canada that people don't have a good support system the women and they fall so easily like when they have their child they give the you get your baby you go home and you're alone you don't even know anything you've never had a child before you probably don't know how to change diapers you probably don't know anything in our my culture the first three months four months f as a matter of fact a whole year six months you your mother-in-law stays with you six months your mother stays with you you have a mature woman who is teaching you how to bath who's letting you sleep who's who's feeding your baby they just wake you up okay feed the baby they put the baby to your nipple and then when as soon as baby's fed and sleeping they take the child from you and they tell you to go back to sleep we'll take care of the baby it is such it's such a lovely community and a village of care and love so maybe that's why i was so sensitive when you know tula didn't want you she didn't want to talk about it because i was like that's your family that's your side the same way he's not embarrassed by his parents who are like you know dazed half the time who didn't know the difference between greek or minion and who was the mexican or where the other person was it's the same way that you should be able to tell your fam fam tell about your family and stuff like that it's so true it's so rich and i don't want to see it die off i don't want people to be ashamed of their culture share it it's beautiful it's beautiful it's what makes you you we can't all be the same that's just it let there be appreciation for who you are what you are and what you bring to the table there is nothing to be ashamed of you'd like me to donate don't meet amy clap she they were always really hosting a party that's how we do it too when the in-laws are coming over for the first time after you know that it's called you you you you throw a party you let them meet of course they don't they're not going to remember all the names of your nico vico and nico nikivico and you know they're not going to remember but you bring them this is my brother we hug we love and i think that was what offended the father that they came and they were not excited excited to meet them because there is an excitement and oh thank you so much i'm here to meet you oh you have when the mother came out and she was like blunt but the woman almost seemed defense offended to say that she wasn't getting the word i'm maybe i was she was like but i was like why don't you just say then the other small woman was like little cake and she was like oh she could just have said cake or a bun or say yes you're pronouncing it right just to get it over because that's how we do it if you can't pronounce something right and you're pronouncing the name wrong this is not the time and place to teach you your tenses or your pronunciation yes you are so right good on you you know what i mean like whenever ian said something and he did it until i was like yeah yeah just not because she didn't want to educate him but this is not the time it's his first time there are certain things that they might not get right and i just i you made me miss so much of my my family and the culture and oh you should see us during easter when we have weddings or naming ceremonies or graduation it is a whole this whole concept of calling people before you come to their house never happened never i never did it like i would walk into my auntie's house if she was busy she was busy it didn't matter i'll go to the kitchen do whatever i'll stay out of her way but to say that i had to call her to tell her i was coming over she'd be like are you crazy mikasa sukasa my house is your house my child would never call me before coming home why would you call me that was my mother sister that is the that is how it is you don't make those things don't make sense back home that i have to call you you're my family what am i calling you for would you ever turn me away no i just it's so beautiful it is so beautiful and at the crocs of life family is everything it's so important take care of your family love them embrace them embrace the differences i love the seeing the father coming to terms with his daughter getting married and as in spite of the difficulty he gave them a house it wasn't it isn't the material thing but you can imagine that he probably had been saving for that moment because he wishes his daughter well at the heart of it all he had been saving money because he believed that one day his daughter is going to get married and he never wanted her to lack for anything so he he he made reservations he said at least my child would not be homeless even if she didn't have that education he was he was preparing he was working so hard to be her back up plan you know to take that weight that everything he's ever done every criticism everything parents are not supposed to you know words of affirmation matter you shouldn't tell your child they're getting old or ugly or whatever but he i i love that tool that didn't hold it against him i love daughters that understand and i love fathers that make their affection he you could tell he loved his daughter he was always concerned in his own mind this was how he grew up women get married so they can have companionship it isn't more like oh a man will beat her covering because you can see his first daughter was very outspoken and she was the one ruling her husband and telling him what to do so it wasn't so that his daughters could be subservient to a man it was i don't want you to be alone in case i die you have someone to be with you that was that was his mindset not that you're here to serve me and you can see his wife told him of listen oh i'll make it she was she had power in her household and a lot of parents sometimes they they they might get it wrong but no one is perfect if you're as a child you're not perfect so why do you think your parents are going to be perfect what is perfection if they love you and they do their best within their own strength for you you should appreciate it i i i loved seeing that the family unit is so beautiful when it's done with with love at the helm of it and i'm going to go call my mom right now as a matter of fact all right don't
