[Music] [Applause] today's the day let's get it running again welcome to car Perla on Johnny Smith today I'm in the garage keeping myself to myself isolating hopefully doing it a little bit automotive therapy this is going to be a sentimental one for me this is my first car 1966-67 Beetle 1500 I bought this car when I was 16 in 1995 he gradually got worse and worse as I was running on a budget years ago and I haven't driven it since 2003 and started it since 2012 today's video I'm going to be getting this car started and having a little talk around why it's so special to me this video is sponsored by Haynes Manuel's if you haven't seen these you've been living under a rock I've heard this one since I was 17 got it for my 17th birthday Haynes is still going strong you can either buy the physical manuals like this still or you can download them online if you look at my description there is a 10% off everything that they do with a special code so thank you very much two hands right let's get kyc 6 7 5d started shall we last started and that is the third of the 812 I don't know why I got into beetles I can't really remember and I suppose it was to do with Herbie as a kid and I think the combination of Herbie and Tamia sand sculpture of the radio-controlled beetle radio-controlled car that wasn't one I always wanted I used to have the tummy a catalogue and I tried to save up for it and he got discontinued before I could buy it so I ended up buying the monster beetle which was the next best thing the picture that wants to me with my crown wants to be consumed and that was in 1990 or eight into the 89 yeah but nine years old and I always wanted a Volvo always wanted an air-cooled Volkswagen it really resonated with me and of the simplicity I still read a babbler history my I started as a journalist on a Volkswagen mag on an area called God's wagon mag so this car you know won't dictated my career what I was gonna do for a living and I did my work experiences 16 years old a Volks world magazine because that was the magazine that my mom used to buy for me if I did chores I get Volks world every month from about 1990 onwards so I've still got lots of Volks worlds and just used to love it used to love the cow look style used to love the baja beetles in that in the late 80s really enjoyed all of that stuff and resto Cal which was probably my favorite but anyway I saved up long and hard in the summer of cut of 1990 and the 94 all of 1995 and needed to buy a fella I needed to buy my first car before I passed my test I was 16 and 95 I worked at Safeway what was then safe a supermarket and just logged away a couple of different jobs saved up about a thousand pounds managed to see this weirdly for sale in an old auto trader magazine that were made damn heard and the auto trader was like four months after day but the car looked right I wanted a sloping headlight beetle that was my plan who wanted an early shame people so pre-1968 there's another beetle in this room that one there the white one that isn't mine it's a 1969 that is for sale actually and I'll put in the description who to speak to about that car that's sort of pretty much restored and it's a lovely car ladies of 1500 as well but that is a different car to this this was kind of the art last of the old school and the 67 people is quite significant and I didn't realize at the time that's my focus listening to her I know I know before I can get the car running I've just got to take some crap out of it it's full of bits because over the last kind of 15 years I've gradually been hoarding bits that I thought I might need to do the restoration properly to do it justice and I want to eventually and if you guys enjoy this I want to restore this car to how it was circa 95 but like pop up so in 95 when I had no money I want it to be very zen it's blue I wanted to have the lower drop spindles on the front obviously ball-joint disc brake suspension because the 67 1500 was the last of the sloping headlights but it had slim trim on the sides the long bonnet as they call it slim bumpers very unique that's the original boot weirdly issue I was understanding the car and to me Joanie's dad's garage who had a pit and I decided to get in the pin start under sealing it leave the handbrake off it and as I pulled it back I was watching the x-files because it's down on a TV in the camera anyway the car actually rolled out very slowly out at the garage door and down the drive and hit my mates VW Polo and this is a one year only shape for the 67 absolutely hard to get and you know I was crying because I'm 20 quid a week on took me a long time to bond it is actually a reproduction panel it was never quite happy with the way it fitted along there it never quite fitted repro pond it's don't quite fit flush enough and when I redo the car repaint the car I wanted to make sure all the panels were right and that's why I started gathering together some correct panels I suppose you'd call them and the reason why I haven't restored it for so many years is a I'm a bad man and I get sidetracked with our projects when I shouldn't and to is because I've always wanted to make sure I can do it to the really high standard this is like my time capsule this is this is this is my little happy place and I have every faith that this car will start but the reason why I'm clearing this out I've got to get to the fuel tank put some fuel live in I'm gonna change the oil a couple of other things before I'm on over let's have a look inside I've got to show you inside for me this is a real time warp it has the same smell it's had for years fuel gauge was always a bit Fibby there's the blanking panel for the original radio because it didn't come with the radio I've got an ashtray of another car in here my gosh haven't seen this in so long this meant everything to me I saved up for this bought it secondhand my brother made a little plinth out of some old kitchen worktop I absolutely worship that a CD player Peters so these levers allow ventilation Heat pull that and the heat would come in and actually that they're not seized which is pretty good the heat in this car was actually amazing early car just a handle no push button I'll blow my head off jack gonna just check how much fuels in the flame but if you can see that I sent away to get the birth certificate of the car you give him your the chassis number when it confirms exactly when this car was born and it left the factory on the 26th of September 66 in the Haynes manual so 65 275 1300 to 1500 models this particular one I love the fact that the example car at the beginning I remember this as well was the same model as mine the early types 67 volts 5 and 1500 saloon that is the model of my car which is yeah the deluxe this makes me low I bought the sets of amber ones are an auto jumbled thing the internet didn't really exist it plays the Cucaracha and I remember wiring it in with my dad so that the original horn would still operate cuz I didn't want it to fail the MOT so you can see with the cardboard lucky to iron her out the there's the black fuel tank with the sender unit there which goes to the fuel gauge there's your fuel tank as I saying which you have to lift the bonnet to fill because these are the last of the earlier cars then it went into fact that car there's got it filling in the side here with the matador conventional car ok I remember it's honestly the smell in here put some pioneers on and it flips up but I put a VW badge on it because of course it did in here I got some technics flossed under home speakers from the yellow AB Mart paper like all good pre-internet people did did look out how those floor stone is fitted in that space so under here is the is where the battery lives I've just brought along a small batteries not the right battery for the car an air-cooled beetle owner goes nowhere without a 13 mil spanner it's been a long time since I've seen this it's not exactly in an ideal spot in my garage but it's it's been squirrel tight in this corner cuz I've got the Chevrolet and the Dodger over there over the years he's the 1,600 be prefixed with a little Volkswagen sign extra meaning I believe it was a Volkswagen approved recon exchange engine so at some point it was reconditioned it isn't the original engine it's a 1600 single port not a 1500 single port we're going to take off the supply here because I'm gonna then pump the car over with fuel purge out the fuel from here I'm gonna pause that for a second drop the oil clean the plugs at least inspect the plugs and I'll have a look at the ignition so Sparks and dinosaur juice so that's my prime concern right now if your filters are so cheap these are like 99p they're fairly universal you can't over change your fuel filter especially when they're cheap but what you can do is you can avoid a lot of hassle I don't know how old these fuel lines are but bear in mind I'm not going to be driving the car on the road in this state I'm just getting the car started ok so that's the old fuel filter that is disposable put another one in tighten it up cause if it pisses fuel that obviously gotta shut the engine down immediately I don't know why I'm crouching when I could kneel down it'd be a lot easier for my knees I'm gonna put a pot under there I don't want it to fire so I'll take off the King lead which means no spark gets to the distributor which means no spark to get to the plugs leave that off for the time being and if we do get this car started you will hear it and no one about it is the exhaust the exhaust is very rotten the exhaust for a beetle sits here under this rear valance with the two exhaust pipes here so I'll be loud and if probably smell and I'll be a bit of smoke so I have to open the windows in the garage which I have screwed shut for security so I must remember to do that it's not seized because I can move the crank or they gather as I'm moving the crank look fuel is coming out very old fuel so I'm the fuel pump on this is a manual fuel pump so it works off the engine runs off a little cam it's not an electric fuel pump that's one of the things I loved about the beetle it's so easy to get my head around ignition works while I've got that little battery in there I'm probably just gonna turn it over and purge out some of that old fuel can you hear pigeons I hate pigeons are so bored yeah this jar which looks like hearing sample but it isn't lead is most definitely off alright let's see if the engine cranks make sure it's out of gear [Music] well the switch in the starter works that's kind of good car haven't heard that starter motor in ages [Music] tell you what's really good is the oil pressure light went out really quick I'm gonna do that a bit more and then I'm going to change you all yeah what's good very yellow that thing about fuel is it goes off modern fuel unleaded goes off right so pause that take that off and put the new fuel filter of fuel line on I've got a hunch that it's gonna be ok I might live to regret that we'll see but if you bypass the dirty fuel tank then obviously there's all the rust and potential crud in the bottom of the old fuel tongue has been set there you you bypass it and you don't potentially wash that in okay that will sleep on that fuel pump works starter motor works of course cuz the fuel tank is all the way up there and it's not self priming sometimes when the cars been sat for a while it takes a bit of turning over of the engine to pull and fresh fuel through then have a look at the distributor cap okay so the contact points inside the distributor cap sometimes either get corrosion or on burn points where the rotor arm is spinning this spins around and that contact point there on the edge dev gets a little bit burn that should be a shiny connection and so should the points inside the connection points inside the cap off which this for cause is for spark plugs because this four cylinders you know what I reckon this car would start immediately but I just know I'd want to do a bit car worship as a precaution and just read familiarize myself with it because it's been in this car was my daily driver for years so this little distributive there make sure the cap is back on with these spring clips I say use a screwdriver make sure that the leads are pushed into the distributor cap because if there's only leads up and pushed in properly it won't fire on that cylinder there's the there's the dipstick turn little dipstick to now I'll check the manual but I think it's two and a half liters of oil in the sump of this car so it's actually not a lot at all and there's no oil filter so it's got a little gauze simple strainer I'm gonna just Jack the car up now so I can get under there take the gauze out drop the oil into an old tub put the new oil in and then check the plugs there's the sump down there that's the bottom of the engine so that's the strainer with all of the little 10 mil nuts that comes off oil comes out heat exchangers so these are where the heat goes from the exhaust forward to create I used to religiously change the oil every turn our 3,000 miles because you can't over change all it's the lifeblood of the car and when you've got a car at this without royal proper proper oil filter and with a very small amount of oil what's the sump I think it's two and a half litre yeah some capacity to an athlete is four point four Imperial points I'm not gonna do anything to do with the brakes today I'm not going to turn into the gearbox oil I'm gonna check the plugs now everyone loves a bit of WD I'm gonna get me the strainer out I'll turn to show it to you that is what sits inside the bottom of the engine with all of the ten mil nuts around it that is all that filters the oil on an old beetle there are paper gaskets there's a paper guess what on that so I think there might be a copper gasket on that's what get on there I'm gonna give that a quick squeeze with some petrol drop the car off the jack so it drains out level and then I can stick it back on turn off liters haul it in and then rock on I always keep hold toothbrushes or the travel ones that you get in wash kits and stuff that you don't really want to use these are perfect for cleaning car parts so okay that's pointless just you've broken in half last pop means is no it's kind of fun something else it doesn't say in the Haynes manual to use a pair of your own Underpants old Underpants as rags in the garage I think they're missing a trick there Haynes haven't you always use a pair of your old pants always just feels right that's the sump plate degreased cleaned of guns can I put that back in okay skin a bit chilly from curious as to the condition of the spark plugs plugs out the beetle oh absolutely I remember them being a hateful job because they sit so involved of all the tin where the cooling the engines always run hot so actually a bit more of a punishing there she comes well they're very very black but they're not oily they're dry and by carbon fouling dry black deposits over rich fuel mixture potentially check our mixture okay I'm just gonna clean this up about thirty quid a week one plug down three to go you don't want to see the rest of them slugs cut the tape okay plugs are done and they seem alright I know I'm dragging this out maybe but I wanted to just take the air filter off there is the oil bath air filter 1500 and I can get to the back of it so no paper element like I said oh yeah the oil sits in there do what looks really good I must have not long to clean that Bob's your uncle yeah for 1500 model got an MP MP pie issues I think would have changed it to a paper element but I'm gonna pick that up at us what we know this thing was designed in the thirties when its basic engine principles lasted until that eighty no beyond the 80s because they carried on making them in them Brazil and Mexico my brother and my dad didn't really want me to get a beetle I do remember that I remember dad knew that you couldn't convince me otherwise dad was only worried because he heard so many horror stories about the way they rot and they do wrong and he knew that as a 16 year old my budget was not going to get a mean car but when we found this car I remember dad looking around it taking a manual reading up from the local library all of the places to look for rock we put this thing up on axle stands and took the wheels off on this as for this person's house and they were pretty good about it and it wasn't that rotten it really wasn't it was shockingly solid thinking about it and they ended up being brilliant fourteen hundred quid or near off from and it's to get him down to nine hundred I still got the bill of sale you need a flexi funnel really on a on a beetle because of this stupid design two and a half liters of new blood fuels in okay I'm gonna turn it over just to get the oil pressure up again this works it does work it does work I found a single it will work so King lead back on that we've found over a few times make sure that's fully on the distributor cap check all the others oils in yep HT leads are back on the plugs okay it's time to start it I'm gonna put my neck on the line and I'm gonna say it's gonna start really easily I should think you can make a bit of smoke anyway [Music] come on oh that was quick the fuel the new fields go through [Music] oh come on darling let's go they'll open a window so high time today it's called an employment you have an easy choice about Oh [Music] that doesn't want to rev it's lovely Siri again and smell it before ah there we go guys I said get it going I knew it would run it's gonna be a lot more stories about this car this cars with me for life and hopefully I can do some more jobs on it a lots changed since this car was last on the road fell in love I got married I've had two children I bought a house born of the house bought another house not all at the same time obviously and my daughter's never heard it run all my son and cars are MOT exempt of this age now so I'm almost tempted to go through the car clutch brake steering suspension tires and actually take it out on the road we shall see if you haven't already subscribed to car pervert please subscribe tell me what you want to see more of on this particular car perhaps I do have other cars those of you who follow me on social media on Twitter at car pervert on Instagram at Johnny car pervert you will know I do own a couple of other cars there's bits or when it's workshop in fact for other cars so you'll expect to see those more of those coming coming soon from my solitary confinement in the garage jeez this episode of car purva is proudly brought to you by
