fancy wow you know and i thought we were just gonna rehearse the next thing you know we're [ __ ] wrong we're sucking rum [Music] if you're new to this you might just be like yeah this is a cocktail show i watch this guy do these cocktails every week yeah but it all was birthed out of being in a band a band called the hula girls so the hula girls were born in 2010 we played uh over 200 shows at don the beachcomber we played all over the place we played florida we played nevada we played las vegas as in nevada so we played nevada arizona we played up and down california a lot of that and then something happened and it stopped the whole world and it stopped the hula girls i have some special guests and i'd like to bring them on now and then we could talk about what we're just doing and what we have coming up ladies and gentlemen mr doug sanborn and mr gary brandon from the hula girls bye how you doing i know i've recognized the joint i know well you've been here before gary i'm seeing you in a second either good to see you yeah we've made it through the other side what did we just finish doing rehearsing yeah we did why would we possibly be rehearsing because you can't remember our song well there is that but doug why are we rehearsing oh we have a show right yeah we do have a show we're playing a show in long beach on saturday if you're watching this live or like close to the air date the premiere date yeah this saturday so we're going to play again what was the last show that we played oh you know it was like a long time ago i can't remember that place but there's like polar bears in there and the adventures club the bit that's that's that was that really that was our last that was our last show well then it was a video shoot here afterwards and no and then after that the wheels fell off that's true for everybody for the whole world yeah right we didn't shoot the music video like right after that and then shut it all down and we put the hula girls up in the dry dock for about two years almost well january would be two years so have you seen this show before you have thanks this is so weird like these are like my buddies for a decade yes okay so do you have a memory of a favorite location to play or a favorite show to play a particular show one of my favorites if i came up on my memories on facebook yeah was the kayak cafe in belmont shores where we were like like on the beach oh yeah recently it was recently it was that was like yes that was like being in a beach party like a gidget beach party thing it was great and everybody was dancing it was really really nice do you uh do you have a favorite show or a favorite uh venue that we played i like when we get out of town of course so we did the cookie lau three different times one time gary went it was great yeah okay but that was the last time probably i complained the whole time gary was very grumpy about his spooky experience there were good moments it was great there were well that's when adam west passed away oh yeah and we did batman yeah and in the hotel room we learned batman that one room where you set up in the middle and then everybody's around you it was like uh elvis's 68 comeback special except tiki i like the bar in there too yeah the molokai bar yeah i was hoping that you were gonna mention the maikai because tonight we're gonna make a cocktail from the mai kai and this cocktail was on the first menu in 1955 three days of the hula girls we played at don the beachcomber like over 200 times they would give us two free cocktails now doug always thought that he would get the most out of those two free cocktails he would always order rum barrels now two rum barrels will knock you out unfortunately we played three or four sets so there's plenty of time and slow and steady no i can nurse it yeah for sure i think but mariana liquidini when he left chicago from don the beachcomber and went to fort lauderdale to be the head bartender at the maikai he brought don the beachcombers cocktails with him one of those cocktails was the rum barrel but they renamed it the barrel o rum so tonight we're gonna make the barrel of rum yeah been a long time i know and so for this cocktail we will be using limes oranges white grapefruit rich honey syrup which is two to one honey to water so this isn't a diet drink is it no passion fruit syrup angostura bitters what soda water white puerto rican rum yep and then our buddy hurricane hayward calls this the kahala bay mix el dorado 12 and smith and cross all right we're gonna start by cutting a lime in half this way or this one uh the other way this one yeah yeah okay watch your thumb we need that some on saturday [Music] so we're gonna need one ounce of lime per cocktail okay so usually you can find about an ounce of lime juice per lime so we are going to quickly cut this in half as well and this guy okay can you squeeze an ounce of lime juice into here okay now i do it for this yeah interruption uh-huh i put it this way other way face down it's the direction that the juice wants to go yeah there you go [Music] ah is that supposed to happen yeah and then turn it sideways into the thing like you're gonna pour it in see there's a there you go nice okay so we're gonna get one ounce there hi dude hey we got going there it smells citrusy we need you to cut an orange in half please this was a gift for our buddy matt rivet head on uh instagram he gave me like an orange squeezer is that nice wow okay see that see oh you know yeah face down i didn't know that you didn't know that no not five minutes ago i didn't know that okay here we go we need one and a half ounces of orange juice okay we got an orange there you go gravity is a great thing right there it is yeah there it is did you call that one and a half i would i mean i think okay uh once you pour that into here very nice what other bands you play drums in play with the untouchables a long time that's good right there serves the pleasure jerry miller uh-huh and the untouchables and the hula girls have performed together before yes super fun at tiki oasis and at dawn the beachcomber yeah good times if you guys like old like not old but if you like uh los angeles world let's face it i mean 80s los angeles scott right yeah it's really good yeah yeah all right so this is white grapefruit white grapefruit is different than pink grapefruit oh no it is white it is white yeah and it's probably a little under ripe we need a one and a half ounces per cocktail i just oh i don't know if this is going to do it i don't want to pick all the white grapefruit off the tree no you wouldn't marble me now i just don't think we're in in grapefruit season yet so what do you do in a time like this well i got some white grapefruit in the refrigerator so gary hang out for a second all right so it looks like the grapefruit is not ripe yet and i don't want to pick a bunch of grapefruits off my my sacred grapefruit tree i moved into this house and there was a white grapefruit tree hanging over my fence and white grapefruit is so rare so gary if we can do one and a half ounces of this per cocktail you see that one and a half yeah yeah [Music] perfect all right we will do that one here oh we need two more of those oh two more two more one and a half's gary what are the other bands that you that's all right that you've played in um a whole bunch there was a band that was probably the biggest inspiration to me starting the hula girls and that was a band called the blue hawaiians this guy was in the blue hawaiians right yeah yeah and uh and now he's in the hula girls they had like this legendary residency at a place called the lava lounge in hollywood up on la brea right yep a brilliant sunset and it was a tiny little bar and you told me stories about who would come and see you guys play well uh johnny ramone and his wife came in a couple of times made me very nervous so nicholas cage would come in nick cage there was a time when he loved tiki bars because the guys at the tiki tea said that nick cage used to go in there also um just a lot of different people why don't we do the rich honey syrup i was paying attention earlier i knew where it was we need a half an ounce per cocktail okay dude is that stressful to you no you just have to say win bro no okay right there oh yeah okay nailed it again okay do it again oh wow repeatable motion oh did you know the name of the bar is that we're playing on saturday no but i kind of know where it is isn't that great very helpful it's called a secret island except don't not tell everybody tell everybody because i'd tell you but i don't know exactly where it is but it's it's a secret but we're still playing there on saturday yeah i got drums in the car and everything good all right so passion fruit syrup oh there's a man on it oh oh okay at least i got the honey open okay i got it there you go all right smell that no what do i do smell it smell it yeah it's not an after-school special smell day what do you think oh it smells good yeah it's passion fruit okay how much do we need here we need one ounce of passion fruit syrup perfect all right into there perfect i'm getting thirsty i haven't seen you in almost two years isn't that weird yeah like we hung out almost every weekend for almost 10 years no 10 years it's weird so it was eight in the last two years i'm gonna count it it's still ten years it's a good time well my privilege to have such a good drummer well we'll see on saturday or won't we it's a secret it is a secret it's secret island we need four dashes of angustura bitters do you know how to do a dash he's up it's at brisk running all the way up all the way down up down that's it all the way up all the way down there's one two yeah three right four we need four three yep four perfect very happy don't cap it yet we got two more to do four more yeah four more i see i see a pattern here we go oh yeah bye all right gary what do you think about corks oh yeah corks are good totally agree what do you think that smells like i don't know i never drink that no well now's your chance okay two ounces per cocktail okay yes another two all right here we go didn't you say you did a stadium tour with uh what waylon jennings and i was always playing with heather miles and we were opening for waylon jennings in nashville and in memphis and wasn't was merle haggard on that show too or something no we did merle haggard back in 95. a little more um oh yeah i'm sorry coming up shortly i know we're talking about merle haggard here yeah we did the west the western states everything west of the mississippi arenas it was a lot of fun yeah we didn't have to drive they flew us from city to city that's nice did you get to hang out with those guys yeah with waylon and merle yep well yeah did you drink with them no um no they were old then they were whalen was pretty old and merle had uh emphysema oh really bad oh but he would do he was supposed to do a 60-minute show and he'd always do a 90-minute show wow you should drive the um motors putting on the concerts crazy because they had to pay the security double time oh i got you you're always good wow amazing so when does your volcano go off it's on a timer so that every time yeah around when the sun goes down it gets all smoky and stuff aesthetical do you remember when we played where was that lake tahoe oh yeah do you remember what was on stage it was like a hot rod and a balcony there was a volcano it was the equivalent of if we ever turned into a giant stadium band what would our stage would look like giant volcano on the stage we just needed like a big swing or something just we could swing shorty out or something yeah it's pretty weird not a usual setup not usually no okay so we need to do more rum this is kind of a heavy one so we want to do the mike high blend where's two ounces oh i can either okay but here's the deal one ounce of each of those per cocktail no matter what you cook oh cork corks are good right gary yes that's what i hear corks are good see i'll get it perfect damn there's one ounce there okay smith and cross smell that for you no oh yeah i can get away already he's already off and running oh it's a sharp one huh no it's good this one here just kind of was getting me as i was doing them these are both excellent runs like super good huh okay okay so we're at the point now where we're gonna fill these things with ice and uh this is a tribute recipe by hurricane hayward from the atomic grog blog and he says to fill it with keeping scoops of ice because we're gonna fill up a rum barrel barrel with the cocktail okay now to flash blend we use this guy from the 1940s so this is as close to the maikai as you can get without going to florida do you know how to work this thing no okay grab one of these guys and then slide it up on there yep and you just want to do it for about that long about eight seconds or so just to introduce some air to it to froth it up and kind of mix it okay here's another one this is actually a shaker tin but we can use it also [Music] how to use that date i know we got a professional over here and if i may say just probably considered one of the best steel guitar players in steel guitar playing i'm part of it i'm not even joking and he's pretty good at the hamilton beach you can work in a mulch shop so what we're going to do now here's the plan okay we have to introduce soda water to this but you don't want to put soda water in here to mix it because you'll bubble it up too much so you're going to introduce them soda water here the fellas fellas so the water so three quarters of an ounce per cocktail i hope you don't mind me doing this here three quarter too far and so we're going to pour that into the mug first and then we can pour the cocktail in on top of it and by doing that it will mix it here is the maikai rum barrel for barrel o rum so this is just going to give a little bit of fizziness to the drink it's not gonna turn into a soda drink but it'll just be a little little bubbly in there okay doug if you would like to commence the pouring [Music] see when it comes to if a beverage is going to get spilled and there's any booze in it it's awesome i get i can't squeeze a you know an orange or lime whatever but that's not the important part don't mess around with this yeah extra i know very good is there a song that you enjoy playing more than the other songs you know i like what gary said about that there isn't because like i mean i dig the song book yeah i do what's that don't don't go don't go go go go go go oh the new one jungle girl yeah it's a new one yes you know it's just cool when we like uh write something working it together like we had a rough arrangement of it yeah but it was i brought a thing to the band and shorty was like i don't really think this is a song and then we screwed with it and it became like this really cool go-go thing but it was the whole band coming together and it's you know it's kind of rare when that happens when the whole band like what is this sparrow's ice cream was it something like something october that's not right there's more sorry yeah it's and it's rare that we're able to really sit together and write together and um but when we do it's kind of magical sometimes i think i think you guys have a great sense of timing and song construction and i bring ideas that i go i don't know do something with this and then they do it you guys are so musical it's so fun to play yeah it is super fun yeah it's we've created a cool thing so with all tiki where you going oh so with all tiki cocktails you want to make sure that you fill all the way to the top with the ice so here is how we're going to garnish this thing i have a mint plant in my backyard now yes i wash these this is like fresh mint gary why don't you come over here too here's your myth here is your mint so i think i will have the maikai rum barrel here and then because uh doug was so fond of rum barrels at dawn the beach comb where he can have that one and because gary hates palm springs so much you can have the palm springs one she was too hot it's got to be 72 degrees or forget about it all right it's pushing a little bit do you know what to do with mint though no no you're supposed to give it a little bit of a wow okay and that wakes that wakes up the oils and then you can just go ahead and put that in your in your drink there plan it forward just stick it in there perfect smugglers pirates and rum runners took their pleasures with this spiritus libation bold and big but rightfully smooth [Music] and so from the mai kai in 1956 this is the barillo rum [Music] r maybe it's good okay you can drink it now oh cool you may kiss the bride okay cheers dudes good to see you again cheers very happy to have you all again yeah thank you spike thank you very good oh yeah oh man you drink two of these no wow it's um no it's just this is the container too i know there'll be one it's very smooth but there's like a tartness to it right yeah it's a good mix it is a good mix this would be two sets yeah it last a set a break and just super chill but this is a drink that this can get you in trouble like if you have too many of these things and it would be very easy to have like want to drink like five minutes and it would be a horrible idea there's an over under there's an overhead yeah there's a threshold yeah there's a point where uh diminishing returns i haven't hit the threshold yet well well here we are there we go keep keep the cameras rolling no i think i'll probably make it mm-hmm i taste the passion fruit syrup i don't really taste the soda water i'm sure it's soda water's doing something bubbly in there but no it's really it's a good mix yup you can really taste the blend of rums but they're not attacking you right no nope that's why it's a dangerous drink yeah well a lot of a lot of tiki drinks are dangerous drinks for sure loving it at the beach comber that juice you got to make that in a mix this is complicated or time-consuming it helps if you have everything pre-squeezed it goes a little bit quicker but i mean how many ingredients is that like nine or something yeah it's like we're cooking except we're not but there are professionals at this and then there's me doing this at home following a list like it's very impressive when you see a professional bartender just out of his head do this i know it's next level but of course you can't play guitar oh see that's like back to the little girls it's true i can't play guitar again thanks gary do you have a favorite tiki bar well i like don the beach corner the old sam seafood right because it was just so old the place was yeah sam's seafood that fish was up there when i was in high school you go down we drive down the coast highway going to huntington beach yeah and and just stayed there for years and years is it isn't it weird seeing that gone now yeah but you know when you were mentioning it it was all rusted away and just barely hanging on it would have been even worse if the storm came through there and blew it off that would have been worse i'm really glad it was rescued i think it's in good hands it is in good hands yeah and i heard stories while we were playing there that they had inspected that sign and every day they worried about that thing coming through the ceiling that would have been devastating yeah a great tiki tragedy what's your favorite tiki bar that's the one because i well we spent i'm from huntington too so sam's seafood so i was in school band and that stuff our award ceremony there you wanna do something cool with a little bit of vibes to it in that big room that was it that was the place cool and even back in the day tsol played there it was like there were punk bands and everything ran the gamut big music festival one that i threw that with we had asian orange play and a bunch of other rockabilly bands but then there was another one highway tiki highway yeah we did that a couple times too that was really good god is there a memorable moment i know i'm just like throwing these questions on you and it's like at the beach comer everything rolled into one yeah it was just years and years of experiences i can't really think of any one thing we just had a great vibe and i think we've played we always played well when we were there yeah because it's one thing for musicians is playing for a room you fit into to an audience that you fit into and sometimes not get it but it dawns with all it was always always there well the hula girls made so much sense at dawn the beachcomber yeah there were other places that we played where i don't know if we made as much sense but don the beach camera was home i know you're thinking what i'm thinking we played a lot of shows where we were like what what are we doing here in the wrong place we're in the wrong place it's not it's like it's not them it's us yeah it happens yeah you can't expect the audience to understand what we're doing when i formulated this whole band in my head with gogo dancers and stuff i was like this is a tarantino movie that's especially coming out of like kill bill uh five six seven eights and stuff yeah and if you put that band into a place where they're expecting people to do mustang sally and brown eyed girl sometimes it doesn't work or margaritaville yeah yeah wrong place yeah so we belong in a place that's like this except like the crowd the dagger bar yeah it's killer perk of course the big room thing you were putting on shows okay so you're hosting those shows during halloween variety shows the curse of the tv next thing you know there's like sword swallowing and piercings and off like like contortion burlesque i think this is probably now a good time to announce i'm having a very very exclusive curse of the tiki show here at the breezeway on halloween with joey from the bell furies mr dick dickerson on guitar bobby trimble from the fly right boys and the bell furies on drums and their buddy who's a bass player it's really good i was gonna be like hey get me on it no no wait a minute okay you got it covered as well as an incredible contortionist anybody who comes to the show will get three free cocktails with price of admission you can take photos behind the bar here we're gonna have multiple bars serving cocktails as well as beer and wine and it it will be expensive but if you want to be part of this the link goes live now surprise hey what do you think about that right i let that in i didn't even know i know i know they well they didn't know anything about i just want to let you know it's like that you're putting on big shows and it's kind of wild you know david estrella thing you know you know no he's fantastic he'll steal the show but he won't be here oh once he buys a ticket maybe there's an opportunity to do a uh a doug and gary like bongo and uh and steel guitar thing while the contortionist is working we both live very close by are you guys around on halloween yeah it's like you know like i trick-or-treat until about 8 39 i still got the monkey outfit it's a go-to i made you guys wear so many ridiculous outfits on halloween the shark thing was just you are you saying that that we jumped the shark on that one i was thinking about this episode that i think your you fonts are reality too like i'm really scraping the bottom of the barrel having you guys on us so the shark thing so i was like oh i found the shirt costume and i was like i can have the whole band wear these shirt costumes but it'll be really funny because i'll get a dolphin costume and my big joke would be like i i thought we said we're gonna all gonna be dolphins and they're all sharks that's a that's about the laugh that it got to i know right it's still not the worst one though and what's wrong with that with the with the mask that was like rubber and you were like okay i remember you were like you were like rocky you're like cut the gloves off cut me you're like taking the mask off you said it yourself i'm like shining i can't take it i'm like right what's the a-hole that made this happen you're like it's me it was you cracked me up it was we were all the creature within black lagoon yeah and i couldn't i was singing but everybody's like uh we can't hear you and so i had somebody out in the audience come up with a knife and cut my mouth open cut me open doug was always like okay i i guess i'll put this thing on and shorty was always like all right if that's the gig let's i'll wear whatever you need uh gary just got left short i'd look over and gary'd be dressed like a monkey or like a shark or something i think gary was the easiest with all of that yeah just another uh day at the office it's just about the temperature when it gets a certain point then you're going to hear about it yeah it's true like he'll wear anything we're kind of a niche market yeah kind of not for everybody i mean i you know one of the funniest ones was when we had kevin stewart playing bass for us it was a halloween show that's the one with the monkey suit stu ward yeah champ so i i was so used to like chasing these guys down and being like why aren't you dressed like let's we gotta do this or that or you know doug's out wandering around or whatever and gary i don't you know i so i'm like where is where's kevin he needs to get dressed and he goes hey dude and i look over and kevin's wearing like a whole monkey costume and he's like he's like yeah i'm ready to go it's like oh man i even learned a monkey joke for the for the thing something about cutting his tail off i don't remember it wasn't funny i'm not a good joke how long is this program this one you're gonna no you're gonna get into that you're gonna get into those jokes do you remember how it went over last time i'm not no i'm not very funny that's a problem it's kind of cool kind of what that's not funny i don't know but that's the good part oh thank you yeah you know you're kind of soft landing like if it was really funny it wouldn't be really funny because then you wouldn't have to play guitar you wouldn't have to do any of that oh yeah i'd be like sorry guys gary what was your favorite costume the shark was pretty good doug hated the shirt god oh shark no i'm i'm interested you don't say i look like uh gandalf from uh lord of the rings do you like the shark all right well because you you know you could breathe yeah the one the one that was the most trouble was the the picture of the black the rubber because he has the glasses on and so that you know i had to put my glasses on over the mask and i was still fogging up my glasses and you for steel guitar no matter how good you are at steel guitar you have to see the steel guitar it's not like guitar where you can like feel your way around yeah you have to kind of see where you are you gotta hum a few bars to me you got to see what's going on yeah but you know i can yeah i can deal with it you know i can figure out how i can make it work and uh and make it work yeah but you like the shark it looks sharp no i see i've seen pictures of that and and i didn't look good it looked like something out of the word in the ring well i'll tell you you weren't the dolphin if you're trying to look cool on stage don't dress up like a dolphin yeah that's not it was a bad career movie very threatening you needed something worth threatening you don't want to be dressed up as something that girls get tattooed on their ankle you guys don't know he rips oh my god sometimes we'll see on saturday it's almost tuned it's like i remember oh yeah i know your stuff it was it just like i feel well it's our stuff i mean i feel invested for sure well 10 years of it like completely killed man we did a lot of shows at don the beach camera we did a lot of shows everywhere but i think it really sounded good tonight yeah i really do it was a confidence building because i looked at the list and it went on spotify to go down and and under the title said even though they're old towns from the first album yeah i just drew a complete point yeah i know what happened and and then you go to you go down and then it starts coming down it was kind of like riding a bike and to be honest doug arrived first and uh when i opened the door i just saw all this stuff piled in my front door but i was like it's doug there he is i like to leave the gear out there for a while and see what happens see if you can see if i come out with a gun or something and all that like check it out survivor i didn't bring the drums out of just like the hardware it's like you should get that stuff i'm like you just shot at my hardware but i was what are you doing i was so happy to to see that and um gary and i have seen each other uh i think at least once or twice over this whole period but when we first started with why he's not that far away it um it felt right it was nice good yeah good job yes that's when you kick off you kick that thing off and awesome like yeah yeah yeah it's like a bunch of times but like it never bored playing no that's not so funny i don't know like all that all this stuff is because it's there's room to like for us to beat us right as long as we play kind of where we're supposed to totally hey dude i have this for you guys look this is a enamel pin whoa from spike's breezeway cocktail power look at that yeah the the back is illustrated by my friend larissa murder queen on instagram it's the breezeway right there wow if you want one of these pins you can join the 10 tier of the patreon otherwise you have to be on the show to get one of the pins wow i've been pinned but guys thank you so much again for for joining me and and staying after rehearsal and joining me here tonight on spike's breezeway cocktail i think a lot of people are gonna be really stoked if you enjoyed this folks please be sure to like comment hit the subscribe button if you aren't already and uh hopefully we'll see you on saturday night at secret island otherwise aloha yeah cheers from the hula girls standby you don't want to miss any of this i'll drink whatever you're making all right so what do you think about course yeah the cooks are good they're cool the corks are good you should practice doing the uh alphabet backwards no there's no such thing as that is that really thing no that's shenanigans i know you want to start a ban i'd love to thought you never asked [Music] what do you think i've been hanging around this whole time [Music] see what i mean you can't take them anywhere you hold it out here okay hold that up no come in here this is so weird what am i supposed to do with this limes okay get out of here see it's a professional here we did the devo thing at equations yeah with the bass player of devo jerry gerald gerald he was real good but we rehearsed with gerald several times kevin stewart played bass and then our buddy judd played ukulele and that was our connection to devo was through judd but judd wanted the hula girls to back gerald who was the great hula dancer at that oh oh yeah we had one of the original maikai mystery girls hula for us with the devo version of the hula girls no we didn't so we did uh lovely hulu we did lovely hula hands miss nanny maca it's so funny because she was probably she was probably in her 60s or 70s and she came into our hotel room while we were rehearsing and she was gorgeous super beautiful super professional yeah it was really good she's delightful there's something about it too because gary does a great version of it if he plays the lead it's mesmerizing right yeah it's really good and it's so cool so the second verse you'd do it and she said i need the lyrics on it because that's where the dance is oh right like if there's not a dancer there i get it it's absolutely beautiful when you play oh good but it's so cool i like what you said too it's like i'm doing with the song it says yeah i'm doing it so we're horsing around well it's like playing music it's like we can do surf music and we can do our version of exotica but then if we need to get very serious about hawaiian music we have somebody who's very studied in it and i think we we can work to serve that music as well and treat it very respectfully and we can get rockets and whatever it is so it's like it's just music and it's a good idea to be able to jump genre each style has its own attraction and and energy to it so that's good were you a fan of devo before we did that well i was way back in the 70s [ __ ] yes i got stolen gerald we had that album i was living in a house with that the drummer owned back in 1978 79 in newport beach and we played that album all the time we played devo and the first cars element okay yeah that just went for and i thought devo i thought well that's not right that's wrong and then after you hear it a few times wrong is right yeah the music style is very angular and then you listen to the cars and very smooth yeah very very hard the first time i heard it i didn't get the sense of humor right i just didn't get it right because you just expect everything is serious because everything in the 70s was that's not serious yeah where's the message right the message is de-evolution what is it oh where's the measuring thing oh my god see uh we're just a little bit short there so um i'm only five seven myself would you put your drums away already i totally did but however how many tiki bars do you think we've played in stage size not withstanding right so that the purple orchid that was we almost broke up over the purple orchid wow there were certain band members that were very upset that they couldn't be on the stage and i was like the stage is literally the size of this bar i'm like hey mate the volcano comes first dude the volcano that's part of our field but we played bro hawaiian in the world yeah wasn't there a vix by staples for a second there yep we did that in new year's i think we did two new years there one new year's after that it was dawned all the way through yeah you're right and then we did the trader vics on the pool deck at the beverly hilton we did um what's the one downtown l.a uh cliftons oh up north right in alameda right forbidden island yeah that place is great almost everyone knows who you are yeah oh the tonga hut in palm springs we did that a couple of times or once maybe once but then we played tiki caliante a bunch in palm springs and when it's not too hot right gary it's the humidity it's not the heat it's the humanity humidity yeah the humanity got to him too right too much right it was a bummer take the oasis a million times what about in jersey oh yeah we played the pier and we played a hotel in new jersey and then of course the maikai and the rest of the travels were you djing or photography oh this gets good they had like this legendary wrenches oh my god they had like this red they had like this legendary registency thank you so much you're welcome the way that i do this went off is there a particular song that we performed that you really enjoy more than any any of the other ones no not really oh that's not very interesting i know it isn't but you know basically pretty boring anyway uh no i i i i like them all depend depends on the venue and the energy yeah yeah because sometimes i like just playing guitar on the surf songs and being loud being loud not acting my age your uh your favorite band is also my favorite band yes favorite rock band yes the ramones yes so sometimes like when we play the surf stuff we get pretty loud and it's pretty fun but also i really think that gary shines and not to you know uh embarrass you here but on like the really moody atmospheric stuff like a lot of the exotica that we play we do a mark denny song we do some exotica stuff that that we've written the evening at tongale yes which you wrote with your son and then and then we kind of uh invited it all we kind of modified it to work for our thing and then the hidden village which was named after one of the back rooms of the dawn of beachcomber uh in sunset beach yep and you play incredible steel guitar on that and also on the record is dj bonebrake and the punk rock legends x playing vibraphone yeah that's really good you've been listening to those two to refresh yourself yeah re-learning well it's been two years you know things are great the other band that you played in was a band called the tikiaki orchestra yes gtik orchestra very very good very good and you played some great stuff on that stuff as well yeah that's a good i think i did three albums with him jim did a great job writing and producing his stuff great tiki music okay that's good right it's easy for you to say you got that gary yeah see ya bye [Music] two one two three uh [Music] [Music] ah [Music] [Music] [Music] huh [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] you
