how's it hanging ladies and gents today i'm here to talk to you about the rise of gun violence in the united states uh he'll be back in the next one come with me for now you're all familiar with the esrb right the excellent sensual rabies babies those fools who are responsible for ruining your north american video game box art with an annoying label in the bottom right corner now it may not surprise you when i say that these labels have meanings nay specific meanings categorizing video games into a tight rating system based upon age appropriateness there's ec a rating given to games that you can play pretty much straight out of the womb interestingly enough this rating was discontinued in 2018 probably because someone realized fetuses can't play video games next up there's e for everyone everyone can play these games no beef about it there's e10 for everyone 10 plus and everyone can still play these okay you're not gonna be sheltering your five-year-old from lego batman 2 for the wii and if you are you're wrong and probably shouldn't be a parent there's t-14 this is when things start getting edgy characters might start modestly cussing violence might get a little more graphic and batman's enemies don't break into cartoony pieces when you punch them anymore there's m for mature and with this rating pretty much everything is on the table violence can be extremely graphic cuss words can fly like there's no tomorrow and situations in the game might get a little steamy oh well i have asthma this is great for my lungs and last on the line we have ao adults only everything and i mean everything is on the table here there's only been a small handful of publicly released games i've received this rating probably because it's not marketable in the slightest and if you own one of them it's a crime you're a criminal and you belong in prison enjoy your stay so now that we've all graduated from ben's school of esrb excellency you're all free to go get high paying jobs at the local mcdonald's but watch the rest of this video first come on man when i was a wee baby boy my mom had a very strict no rated m games rule for us kiddos which in my eyes was extremely bad parenting i would hear all my friends talking about these cool shooty booty bang franchises like halo call of duty battlefield to name a few and i would sit there sucking in as much information as i could about these games like a dehydrated nine-year-old sponge imagining a perfect world where i too could play shooty booty bang games with my friends now that i'm an old wise guy boasting a 17 inch beard perfect for ponder stroking and i can look back and say yeah i can see why a concerned mother wouldn't want their kid to play a game with this in it yeah yeah makes sense i mean whatever floats your boat mom it looks pretty awesome to me but i sure couldn't see that back in my diaper days which is why in 2014 when a mainstream shooter from the developers of halo whose name is bungie started lining the shelves of gamestops all over the world with an esrb rating of t for teen as in teenager i was hyped i knew it was my destiny is that joke anything anyone do you get it am i funny yet you suck yeah i know uh why did that happen again and look i'm not a silly dumb daft head nor was i an idiot child and i was aware and am aware and will continue to be aware that there were t-rated shooters at the time so the m rating was no excuse for my hunger i should have been plenty satiated on games like tom clancy's ghost recon 2 battlefield bad company the old call of duties brink front lines fuel of war star wars battlefront the terrible modern bond shooters because why not i like the look of cgi daniel craig i think it really captures the beauty of the actor himself the jawline the cheekbones cute ears massive the point is none of these games were hype okay star wars battlefront 2 was but aside from that the pre-teens and tweens of the early 2010s were not playing these they wanted the new stuff the edgy stuff the big stuff with polished graphics and enlarged explosions preferably featuring aliens or zombies maybe a bit of both and besides i can't play these games on my wii u and that was another problem the only console my family owned at the time was a wii u a wii u a wii u a wii u destiny isn't on that yeah i know but wait if call of duty ghost gets to be on wii u and xbox and playstation why does destiny only get to be on playstation and xbox puzzle the young benjamin and apparently i wasn't the only one puzzling about that because there's plenty of webbing sites from 2015 asking the same question yo when's we getting destiny on our wii u's dog and sure call us ignorant fools as you will but the evidence was there check out the destiny logo now check out the wii u's logo oh my goodness they line up enough for a conspiracy theory to form it was obvious a change needed to be made so instead of signing a change.org petition or sending a loving email like a normal well-educated flesh boy living in the 21st century should i sent a typed printed and saliva sealed letter to the bungie headquarters in bellew washington and here it is you can read it if you want i'm sure not gonna read it to you but it's nice to see i've come a long way as both a person and a gamer because there's no way the wii u could have ever run destiny it was not built for that in the same way the microwave wasn't built to heat up my can of campbell's condensed cream of mushroom soup sorry about the house mom i will make it up to you when my new hit single help me please i put a metal can in the microwave gets big on soundcloud it's only a matter of time really bungie obviously never got my letter because destiny never came to the wii u so i had to improvise father i desire an xbox one we do not need an xbox one my son father the xbox one has blu-ray disc capabilities my son i have always desired to have a blu-ray disc player in my possession we can split the cost half and half on this xbox one if we buy it used you have yourself a deal father that's a father and son bonding moment my son yeah sorry man i don't know why this keeps happening this video isn't supposed to be animated honestly it's a little bit brutal we ended up buying a used xbox one for a bargain of a deal from a nice gentleman that we met in a crown burger parking lot it felt like a drug deal maybe it was i think there might be cocaine in this and just like that i had the necessary hardware to purchase the unnecessary software that would become the largest financial commitment of my life to date i am clearly still a child now what exactly is destiny if you're a seasoned video gamer you've probably played it at some point and even if you haven't you've probably at least heard talk of it but if you're a raw unseasoned uncooked disgusting non-gamer you probably have no clue what i'm talking about and have most likely clicked off the video by now you know i could sit you down and give you a real lengthy history lesson on the lore of destiny and boy howdy there is lore but i'll spare you the details for the sake of if this video goes over 25 minutes you're a goner a few things the simplest barest bones definition of destiny i can give you is this destiny an online multiplayer first person shooter franchise that takes place in a dystopian future where you play as a guardian defending humanity's last city from a really really a whole lot of stuff like six hostile alien races and also some scary gods and a constantly approaching fleet of black doritos but you don't need to worry because guardians have super awesome powers that a very large white ball perpetually floating above the last city gives them i mean check this sweet nut out fire sword dude lightning stab homing temporary captain america's shield partner fire gun show safe [Music] to name a few of my favorites and on top of that guardians are immortal as long as their small robot ghost friend is around to revive them that doesn't always happen it's a very subjective way of immortality destiny's gameplay isn't anything to drop trou about if you've ever played a first person shooter before it's simply a well-made online multiplayer loot and shooter game it doesn't have eye-grabbingly crisp gum play or a variety of mobility options to keep gameplay fresh and unique like other standout titles in the shooter genre but it more or less makes up for that with really engaging world building and just sheer hunking variety of things to do in the game the moment you're launched into destiny you're presented with a lot of choices to make what's your guardian gonna look like are you gonna be an exo an awoken a boring old human do you want to be a hunter a titan a warlock what do you want your subclass to be which weapons are you gonna choose you want any mods with that how about your spaceship what you want that to look like your ghost can have a life preserver if you make an in-game purchase would you like that we think you would like that and while destiny is far from a choose-your-own-adventure game all these decisions you make hugely impact your experience playing every player's character is entirely unique from everyone else's because of how customizable it all is every weapon armor piece appliance vehicle and ability can be modded enhanced decorated customized or just done away with entirely if you're not digging it this makes destiny feel very personal and gives you a massive amount of control over how you experience the game and really just makes you feel like a special little snowflake because sure you're running all the same missions and events as all the other millions of players but you're doing it with your character build that you've developed over hours of playing that's unique to you and only you it's easy to get attached to a game like that when it feels so custom fit for your awkward pubescent gamer body unlike this tank top of course i would be a downright dunce not to mention the huge plethora of activities you can get up to in this game there's the main story missions strikes raids patrols bounties exotic quests the crucible gambit the iron banner trials of osiris dungeons lost sectors nightfalls seasonal activities and wow no wonder i have no time to foster healthy human relationships even with all this the game doesn't force you to do any of it sure it encourages you and it's gonna be a lot easier to progress your character if you're taking advantage of as many activities as you can at once but in the end if you wanna stick to starting dance-offs with the other players in the open world nothing is stopping you i think the strongest part about destiny as a whole is easily its universe the characters the locations the thing that happens with those characters in those locations the story destiny has been telling since its launch in 2014 is quite the special piece of fiction is it flawed sure but it's also incredibly imaginative and enticing and gives me something to think about when i'm being chastised for my crimes against humanity so how many bouncy balls did you steal from this poor innocent unsuspecting child enough to make him cry your honor well that's not what we practiced not only is the story good but the backdrop in which the story takes place is amazing there is so much thought that goes into each of these locations the environments are all unique and beautiful there's little nooks and crannies of every world to be explored fun secrets to discover and just a ridiculous amount of detail put into some of these places it's also really fun to see bungie's futuristic twist on real life locations across our solar system astronomy buffs will recognize locations like earth mars venus the moon mercury titan europa and not that many more but guys the environmental storytelling is off the charts here wait there were charts yeah dude there's always been charge check it out it's off the charts to add to the overall excellence of destiny it comes along with a very very good soundtrack composed by some pretty big names i really don't think destiny's soundtrack gets enough hype and i would highly recommend you give it a spin in your ears every year new destiny content is released and every year new banger music for destiny is released with it the tunes of this game are just as creative unique and diverse as the environments and characters which really ties it all together and makes destiny feel like a truly epic sci-fi fantasy experience for boys and girls and doggy dudes alike when i take my friends hostage and tie them to chairs so they'll listen to me rant about destiny i like to compare to the mcu simply because it's so huge in scope it's so well fabricated i would actually argue that it's more well fabricated than the mcu but don't tell my buddy feige that he'll cry and it's constantly expanding destiny is constantly adding new content constantly evolving the story forward in exciting ways constantly cranking out yearly dlcs that you gotta buy bay baby that's it says that is where the abusiveness of my relationship with this franchise steps in i'm a broke baby boy with a very small cash pool it's not even a pool it's a bucket and that bucket has a hole and my money's falling out so when bungas with the fungus comes out with sweet hot new destiny content i'm torn i want to immerse myself in the new game expansion but they're asking me to slap down 50 plus dollars to do so and that's a big ask for a broke baby boy this is where the ugly truth of destiny pokes out the destiny franchise is a yearly subscription just like your netflix yahoo your vegan cuts booty box destiny is asking you to donate a yearly portion of your life savings to the game and in return you get to keep your guardians journey relevant with access to new content it's not like this is a new thing for destiny oh no no no it's been this way since the beginning destiny's release schedules looked a little something like this game you have to buy a bunch of expansions you also have to buy second game you have to buy and even more expansions you also have to buy in the past couple of years with destiny 2 they've even had the audacity to implement these 10 mini dlcs called seasons that come in bunches between the big yearly dlcs to keep you playing the game 24 7 365 days of the year meaning the world we live in now is a world where you have to pay about 70 dollars a year to stay relevant with the ever moving forward universe of destiny that estimate includes the big yearly dlc plus the 10 in between dlc seasons yikes my dog you could buy over 26 of old spice pure sport high endurance deodorant with that much cheddar oh you were offended by my elder yeah well i'm sorry i smell so bad my destiny budget didn't allow room for deodorant this year understandably this content release method is a great way for bengi to support itself make a profit pay its employees and keep cranking out quality and i mean quality destiny content month after month year after year but also understandably this content release method turns a lot of gamer dudes and dames completely off destiny yeah no thanks i'll stick to building massive hogs in laura minecraft cave raiders 3 the birth of a savior i love this game not only is bungas asking you to pay 70 a year but a lot of the time it doesn't feel like that 70 dollars was worth it sure there's always plenty to do in the game but that doesn't mean the game always gives you an incentive to do it and even when it does that incentive isn't always good leaving a lot of the objectives you're aiming to complete feeling very empty and laborious something a video game should not feel like a more recent example of this that i ran into was the agger's scepter exotic weapon quest in season of the lost you talk to this very cool white lady and she presents you with a list of atlas skus you need to find in a specific section of one of the game's locations easy enough so you follow the clues maybe watch some helpful youtube videos and you find the atlas skus you then dump them off in this weird pocket reality chamber and get a boring exposition dump about the weapon you're questing for and then it makes you do that exact thing three more times as you run a seasonal event you're already tired of playing as you do three strikes you're also already tired of playing because they've been in the game for ages and then and only then are you rewarded with the weapon and as it would turn out the weapon is really cool and you totally forget that the game ever wasted your time because holy cow look at this it's like a beam of icy justice i'm holding a miniature snow death star in my hand oh my nut i can see why someone would think this checklist type quest to be fun from a developer's standpoint because it's easy to whip up in a day's work but when you're in the game mindlessly pounding through a checklist of activities you've already done it just feels like a chore man i'm scrubbing the toilets and washing the walls for mommy right now an unfortunate amount of the quests in destiny boiled down to a grueling checklist of chores to complete and while most of the time these checklists aren't mandatory they're usually the only route to take if you want to make any sort of progress in the vast landscape of post campaign content the good news is there's a lot of checklist quests to complete so choose your favorite chores and get to it my friends what really fiddles my diddler though is when these chore checklist type quests actually block you from progressing with the story missions in the current campaign you'll get off a campaign level ripping and roaring on a high story point and ready to jump right into the next mission only to find that before you do you have to take out the trash and eat your broccoli and clean your room before your aunt and uncle arrive because if your cousin brent sees your room in such an awful state he'll mock you and bring shame to our family [ __ ] brent all the expansions suffer from these mandatory between epic story mission choreless to some extent but i think the 2019 expansion shadow keep is the biggest culprit of such sin shadow keep is not great i can't wait for it to get vaulted that's another thing in october of 2020 destiny 2 was a whopping 120 gigabytes fact simply because it contained the base game and all the additional content that had been added up to that point understandably father bungie decided that was too big of a file for their game so with the release of beyond light in november of 2020 they cut the game in half and downsized it to a humble 70 gigabytes in a cool oh no the black doritos are overtaking these planets in our solar system type event it was an exciting fresh start for destiny 2 and my xbox's hard drive was absolutely pumped enter the vaulting system oh you want to play the original destiny 2 campaign that's a shame it's in the vault so are all the expansions that aren't the three most current ones three at a time people no more no less i am not fine with this sure i've already played through all the content that's getting vaulted every year and it keeps destiny from getting morbidly obese i can see why it's a necessity but at the same time it bums me out forsaken is getting vaulted when the witch queen comes out and dang it forsaken has been my favorite piece of destiny yet story wise soundtrack wise visual wise location wise forsaken is just peak destiny it is genuinely saddening to see it go and hey i paid 40 dollars for that when it came out and now you're just doing away with it we're not even paying to own these expansions anymore we're just paying to rent them for three years before they get demolished this is stupid i quit [Music] i've been playing destiny since early 2016 post-taking king expansion this franchise and i are coming up on our five-year anniversary and i think it's about time we answer a question i often find myself asking myself why do i play destiny because truth be told this game makes me feel like an absolute sucker idolizing mediocre video game i have a lot of bones to pick with destiny from how bonkers expensive it is to the lackluster gameplay it so often provides me to the point where any sane man would question why i even give the thing the time of day to justify myself in this matter i'm gonna talk about destiny as if i'm in a troubled romantic relationship with it because i am the honeymoon phase this is when a starry-eyed innocent young benjamin jumped into destiny and instantly fell in love with it he played through the base game then the smaller expansions than the taken king and was invested emotionally economically spiritually sexually what this investment was only further compounded with his purchase and enjoyment of destiny 1's rise of iron in fall of 2016 and destiny 2 in fall of 2017. temptation and first breakup after having an underwhelming experience with destiny 2's smaller post-release dlcs the now slightly aged benjamin was rapidly losing interest in the game so i pulled the plug i didn't get 2018's forsaken other much more affordable games had captured my interest and i thought i had moved on i thought i was done with destiny but if i had moved on how come i couldn't sleep at night how come i spent hours on end tossing and turning thinking of a beloved game i had left behind why did i still see ads on youtube that triggered fond memories why did i keep scrolling through destiny's instagram feed every night why couldn't i bring myself to take destiny's picture off my bedroom wall and then i solved it i need to buy destiny 2 forsaken again what is going on today back together and second breakup so yeah i snapped and bought forsaken at a discount price because by the time i bought it it had been out for a few months and dang it i'm glad i did great story dope moments archery my favorite expansion but after the campaign i once again found the end game content to be very uninteresting and chore-like so once again destiny and i drifted apart this time for much longer this time it haunted me less this time i almost moved on together again but then you know what happened in 2020 nothing much but for some reason i found myself with ample gaming time and beyond light was looking very cool so i pre-ordered beyond light bought shadow keep at a discount and pounded through it real quick in preparation for the new expansion and since that day i have been consistently paying and playing destiny 2. so the evidence has been laid out my relationship with this franchise has indeed been troubled destiny and i have had our arguments and disagreements over the years and because of that i've been very on and off with the game it's not like leaving and coming back to games is in a regular process in the gaming world your typical video game enjoyer will have quite the cycle of games they pump through on a monthly basis but with destiny each breakup felt very personal because dag nougat i'm attached to this game and the story it's telling i really like it but why why do i like destiny why am i so willing to let a live service first-person shooter man handle my bank account free time self-image confidence love life when there are so many other games on the market maybe it's because the goods just outweigh the bads maybe it's because destiny is one of two video games that has succeeded in bringing tears to my eyes the second being minecraft story mode when the pig dies junior high was rough okay maybe i'm clinically insane or maybe uh all of these reasons but in the end does it matter i like it because i like it and that's the end of that he's done it oh what a momentous occasion he's deciphering life before our very eyes [Applause] thank you for the award the destiny franchise has had me more or less hooked since 2016. sure we've had our ups and downs but as of right now i'd say we're going steady and will be for the foreseeable future we'll see how long that lasts though because as my good friend katy perry so often says you're hot then you're cold you're yes then you're no you're in then you're out you're up then you're down you're wrong when it's right you're black and it's right we fight we make up because we may [Music] what good does that do you really like me we make [Music] this next verse hey what i said you're not in control yeah okay i'm done thanks for watching everyone uh that's that's that's a wrap um that's a wrap on this one catch you next time oh really because i'm just getting started [Music] you
