MUSIC DIRECTOR REACTS | Snarky Puppy - Lingus (We Like It Here)

hello and welcome in my name is drumroll tony i'm a twitch streamer and music teacher living in seattle my instruments are percussion bass and a tiny bit of guitar and now we've had a couple requests for snarky puppy i love this band it's been a bit since i listened to him so i was like you know what we should do some snarky puppies so let's get into it it's been a little bit since i've listened to snarky puppy but i'm very excited for this because every time i mean their lineup of musicians is just it's legit players uh this is from 2014 i don't know that era of them so i don't know who we're about to listen to um it looks like it's kind of it got some views though got a couple views like 30 million so i think it's safe to say the song is probably pretty good so uh volume is up let's uh jump in [Laughter] [Music] so alrighty man that ostinato that repeated rhythm that's going on set up by the keyboard coming in and just a nice chill horns and just some dirty back beating the drums so i want to go to a concert where everyone's wearing uh a headset i personally i know a lot of people like sitting in front of monitors better like they like the sound in front of them to experience it i love a headset sound so i'd be very curious to go to a show like this to hear that [Music] hmm [Music] nice mix there five whatever there's a five and seven and something the turnaround and one of them was a little different but this is this is what makes this kind of music so great just all the uh uh mental engineering that's going in [Music] keeping that five feel [Music] [Music] on the beat there that's so nice also like a band though that like you know well this level play they're all serious players but everyone like communication you know like looking at each other is so important look at that look at the stank face right here he's like yeah [Music] is that corey henry did i just see cory henry i think i did [Music] hmm [Music] that's such a beautiful so the way we come in with that those long legato phrases and then that quick we just instantly flipped to the staccato all that stuff and keeping that uh five groove i can't figure out like some of those turnarounds i gotta be like ultra counting to figure out like are we keeping in five and it's super tasty or does it actually change but i just i really really really love the stuff [Music] me laughs [Music] man the drum the drumming going behind that uh that melody phrase there was just so perfect um other thing i was going to say about low volume settings where the mix is really good everyone's wearing you know like obviously they're in here where they're the headset the whole everyone's probably getting the exact same mix between um audience and uh band members the ability to not have to overplay like you know when you go see something and like the musicians are good but everyone's playing like the ball everything is like at an 11 out of 10. um there's just a lot of like technical stuff that gets sacrificed there and that this is nice because it's not that [Music] whew [Music] [Applause] hmm [Music] [Music] really really good back and forth between uh saxophone and trump it was like a little fuzzy effect on sax and almost like flangery effect on trumpet it's just beautiful [Music] nice [Music] yeah man [Music] ugh [Music] i got i got the what's that called again oh man oh man the that's such a beautiful thing the way he plays i'm familiar with this plane uh that was so it's cool because the groove going on between uh uh bass and then low end whatever left hand in the keyboard and then obviously kick uh bass drum you know simplistic in design and then the progression that was going on and keyboard over the top of that like sound like church sound like just really really great jazz and just the voice exploration over that it's just that stuff messes me up when i hear that i'm like man there's so much brain power going in there i mean i've been to a show before it's it's mesmerizing [Music] [Music] [Music] what a tasty voice edition there uh i love all the little half pitch bins too but man this is uh and i take my statement away there that's just a left-hand keyboard and uh bass drum i don't hear i don't hear bass unless the bass is just magically really really blending in uh with the keyboard it's such a low dynamic [Music] [Music] hmm [Music] [Applause] yeah baby [Music] [Music] i was just about to comment how we finally got a little bit of that left-hand groove with the progression there and then now we're going this direction this is just genius genius genius writing and playing dude [Music] laughs [Music] but what a little inside i mean they didn't go with i mean like you know you could think of like modulating metrically but like what just great great good good great stuff [Music] hmm [Music] [Music] anyway okay my god that was great uh okay i do so much like metal and rock in this channel because it's been fun for reactions but i mean ultimately my favorite music is jazz but it always will be jazz musicians are my 100 that's where my passion lies and that's that is this is [ __ ] why right here because this is amazing dude you can't that solo is like this like that'll be like the textbook example to show i mean there's so many textbooks yeah it's just show your young students about development theme development of an idea over a long period of time and taking your time to express and evolve with the other people in the band and really really stretch your legs like because in the beginning of that we just have that bump i'm not playing that right you got your like rhythmic figure that's over and over just you know left hand and kick drum and then by the end of it we have weyland drums we got uh auxiliary latin percussion we've got other lines going on bass players jamming others you know this all the stuff's happening it's just perfect yeah man [Music] nice line [Music] one of my uh in my undergraduate one of my base professors was always talking about like ensemble writing inside of like solo ideas is the key and you're seeing it there like we're trading with the keyboard keyboards burning up whatever's going on and so on top of that one two one two one two three one two i don't i don't know what it is but you get what i'm saying though [Music] hahaha [Music] hmm [Music] see how clean those horn articulations are there man [Applause] he's like what just happened what just happened oh man yeah man that was beautiful that's why that's got 30 million views because people know good music when they hear good music yeah man very much that's a fun uh everyone in the audience that's a very that's a very like um lucky experience i mean it's fun to be in the video right you know sure it's all like close musician friends like hey man come come come be part of this anyway um i think i said enough you know obviously this it gets me going when i hear stuff like this i just kind of can't really contain myself that's when i start freaking out in a crowd i mean you know i love all the stuff we're doing too it's fun but for me like my inner geek and like just um obsessive like oh my gosh i gotta immediately go to the practice room comes out when i see stuff like this like it's just it's mind-blowing um i think we need to do more groups like snarky puppy in here uh that was just a uh it was a really good experience so thanks for the recommendation uh we'll definitely be getting back to like jazz fusion funk stuff and just well with stuff that features players that really
