[Music] are you thinking about moving to Honolulu here are a few must before moving to Hai in this video I'll cover the whole process of getting ready to move to Honolulu stick around to the end as I share 14 pointers about life in Honolulu welcome back to living Honolulu Hawaii if you're new here my name is Duke I'm a real estate broker based in Honolulu and on this channel we explore real estate strategies that help you make better decisions about buying selling or investing Honolulu is a city where Sun kisses the sea it's a tapestry of lush valleys and urban charm from Lively Wy Key Beach to tranquil monoa Valley to Feast for the census but let's get real living in Paradise isn't all sunsets and surfing it's a complex City with its own set of challenges especially in real estate before booking your flight I recommend setting up a call with me so I can guide you through the process and answer your questions especially if you aren't familiar with the island and the different neighborhoods next I'll set up a search for homes in your price range that meet your criteria at this point I would connect you with a local lender if you don't already have one to get pre-approved this is crucial so that you can make the best offer when that time comes for booking your flight check Google flights kayak or any of the other flight search tools depending on whether you plan on checking out the island first or taking the plunge and moving straight here you would need to secure a place to stay accordingly look on kayak Airbnb or another booking channel for an affordable hotel or short-term rental for your first week or so if you're moving here the next step would be to find a 6-month rental this will give you some time to adjust to the island life and get a feel for the various neighborhoods some of you may already know what and where you want to buy in that case a 30-day rental may be more suitable buying a home here can take at least 30 to 60 days so you want to have enough time to make that transition if you are new to aahu I recommend not rushing into it and test drive the area you want to live in with a 6-month lease if you have kids research the different school districts and option for public or private schools traffic is a major part of life here so consider commute times to school and work beware of scams and never send payment before seeing the unit use the temporary short-term rental to see the long-term rental with your own eyes if it meets your needs sign the lease as much as possible keep your move simple and limited to only the items that are irreplaceable don't ship large items like furniture or appliances this is because there may not be enough space to fit everything so you want to furnish your space accordingly unless money is not a constraint your new space is likely smaller than what you're used to on the mainland the good thing is the outdoors can be your living room here make sure you have at least 2 months of living expenses saved before moving here that would include housing flights and food you don't have a job lined up check indeed CRA list Staffing Solutions or outs as for shipping a car here I would advise against it for financial reasons the cost and process makes it hard to justify you still must ship it here check out posha or Matson if you are planning on moving here with pets learn and prepare for the move by checking out the animal quarantine page there's a program that allows for direct release without quarantine that takes several months of preparation and shots with the largest population in Hawaii Honolulu is your gateway to Urban Life in Hawaii it's a Melting Pot of cultures and the easiest place in the state to fit in especially if you're used to the maintenance hustle and bustle some of the other areas in Hawaii can be a lot slower paced and could take some time to get used to upon securing a permanent address be sure to apply for your state ID at the local DMV or Satellite City Hall offices it's your golden ticket to the comma rate offering discounts at various local businesses from eies to hotels ready for a more relaxed pace welcome to Island time in Hawaii a laid-back attitude is the norm don't be surprised that meetings start a bit late that's just how it is here learn to be flexible and adapt remember in Hawaii warmth trumps directness if you have criticism or complaints it's best to wrap them in a layer of friendliness to avoid seeming rude beware of Island fever feeling trapped is common but Hawaii's stunning nature and outdoor activities provide a great escape the other Islands can offer a Quick Escape since you can fly to any of them and in less than an hour it's a 5 to 6 hour flight to the west coast of the Mainland the humid salty air here speeds up deterioration so be prepared for extra maintenance and for transport check out the bus the Wahoo's efficient and affordable bus system there's also the newly open Light Rail called Skyline learn to embrace the outdoors here since the weather and conditions allow for it year round personally surfing and the abundance of waves in warm water was why I moved to Honolulu 20 years ago Hawai is likely the most expensive state to live in since almost everything needs to be imported here and it's the most isolated populated landmass in the world Hawaii has higher gas prices but distances here are short groceries can add up but shopping at Costco or farmers markets can help you safe Hawaii's beaches all public and free are world class and most of the nature here like hikes and Parks won't cost you a dime enjoy gorgeous weather year round and short distances across the island a drive from Honolulu to haliva for example it's a Scenic hourong Journey it's possible to drive around the whole island of Wahu in under 3 hours life in Hawaii is simple no winter clothes needed just your shorts flip-flops a T-shirt and maybe a long sleeve for those cooler evenings ha's culture is all about happiness and relaxation you'll find good energy and smiles wherever you go life here is good fancy a drink or a snack by the beach try places like Duke's Wy key or the Roy Hawaiian hotels My Thai bar especially during their live Hawaiian music sessions if you're looking for a more unique experience check out some of the Speak Easy bars like wild orange green lady cocktail room and bar leather apron heads up Honolulu has significant traffic congestion and in our tropical climate expect some uninvited guests like cockroaches and ants at home a clean house is your best defense that's a wrap on your Insider's Guide to Honolulu from its unique culture to the practicalities of Island living the city is full surprises waiting to be discovered if you enjoy this video click the
