[Music] there was a lot of luck in my family's rise my grandfather was a tasmanian and he was broke flat as a pancake and he went to the races and he was there and somebody dropped 10 bob and i don't know who it was and he didn't bother to inquire he died for it and he got the ten bob and put it on a horse i don't know the name of the horse but uh he'd won it twelve to one so um he bought he bought a ticket for new south wales and for sydney and came over and started his career in the newspaper industry in australia and he did quite well and that's where the family started from 10 12 on a race course [Music] it was kerry's father frank packer who turned this stroke of luck into a solid fortune building a newspaper magazine and television empire that kerry would eventually inherit his father's success meant he was born into a world of privilege but both his father and mother were distant and strict he used to sentence sentence meter going upstairs and waiting for him where he used to come and he used to use a polo with very well i think it's quite well documented that his father actually treated him pretty pretty harshly and he was always declared to be a dunce and you know a bit of a dim bugger um and i think he was dyslexic and it wasn't people didn't know about that in those days kerry mentioned that his mother had often called him stupid and i mean he wasn't bitter about it he just said it was just a remark that he made now you know whether that was a an impetus for him later in life to show what he could really do i'm not sure but i suspect it was at the age of five kerry was sent to boarding school at cranbrook just 400 metres down the road from his home in sydney's bellevue hill his final years of high school was spent at geelong grammar in victoria where 50 years on his history master michael collins purse is still on the staff his work was pretty bad on paper but pretty good in class dialogue but he was very much a top sportsman he played for two years in the first australian rules football team as well as representing victorian associates of public school boys at rugby he was in the top cricket team first 11. he had considerable standing for that and he was a house prefect in his house perry has so he had responsibility authority there [Music] but for all his sporting prowess his old master remembers kerry as a lonely child who was sent to boarding school far too soon five is so early he could have stayed here and cranbrook is just around the corner it would have made him uncertain of his place in the family and in the world and do you think that scarred carrie yes i think it must throughout his life kerry would always say his father was firm but fair privately the story was very different happiest moment on his life my mile was the day his dad died when's the frank went yeah was the happiest day of kerry's life that's right he told me that on half a dozen occasions from going from the idiot son to the guy who turned 100 million into seven billion he didn't do it to make the money made he went to prove it to his doubt or the world or whoever you wanted his mum that not bad for an idiot when he left school kerry packer went into his father's media business he started at the bottom lugging papers and cleaning printing presses he married a doctor's daughter rosalind whedon and that have two children james and gradle when sir frank packer died in 1974 kerry took over the family empire and three years later embarked on the mission history seemed certain to judge as his greatest achievement i want to make you a few promises tonight [Music] i believe that the finest cricketers in the world and the finest cricket that the world is going to see is going to be played in australia for about eight to ten weeks every summer from here on in world series cricket begat everything and and i still want to look back is one of the most outstanding gambles and one of the most correct moves ever in the history of sport he took a game that seemed to take a week to play he really changed the game forever single-handedly and i don't think a sport that has been going on as long and being played as long as cricket had to have one influence of one person on that game it had to be had to be carried packers nobody else could have done what he did [Music] we started off having a war with the cricket board we ended up being friends with them and between them them and us i think we've ended up doing a service for cricket which has been good for the game good for the individuals and good for the general pub world series cricket had made kerry a popular hero but elation turned to despair when in 1984 he was falsely accused of terrible crimes i mean evidence the costigan royal commission you were asked about a large amount of cash you kept in your safe and you said they were needed for punting and shares i thought those were privileged documents i'm sorry i i i mean that's a bit late isn't it i'll just give you an example mr pence you're giving me an example of what [Music] of how if people need to get around the everyday example of something that i was exonerated from and hijacked into before the costing inquiry and you're sitting here under parliamentary privilege dragging that up again having been exonerated by the parliament of this country i think you've got a damn time i'm sorry if kerry had not been a man of the stature that he was and as articulate as he was and with the financial muscle that he had he would have been completely destroyed by the costigan royal commission kerry packer would eventually be formally exonerated in the federal parliament but the experience scarred him for life of all carrie packers big business deals the one he did with alan bond more than anything turned his 100 million dollar inheritance into a multi-billion dollar fortune it was 1987. alan bond had two tv stations in perth and brisbane kerry had two in sydney and melbourne we took a suite at the wentworth hotel and we first sat down a cup of coffee and he said now listen to your son he said either i'm going to buy your queensland western australia or you're going to buy my uh my sydney and melbourne and we're going to be put together so when we walk out of this room one of them is going to own it and one of them's not going to own it so you can take your choice alan was in acquisition mode i think he would i'm sure he would have been much more interested in in buying themselves in his private laboratory at his park street headquarters he had your check he has it's still there a check for 1 billion and 55 million on the wall did you know that no i didn't know he had it there he's gonna have to wait a bit longer to bury me i'm not ready to go when he was saved by the defibrillator well he he felt a sense of anguish a really deep sense of anguish that i can be saved this way because of my wealth but others can't be so we'll have them in every ambulance in new south wales and he made sure that happened and he funded it but kerry packer's health continued to deteriorate by the end of the year 2000 his one remaining kidney began to fail and he needed a donor to survive i felt that i wanted to help him and although i didn't know anything about it at the time the actual process i um i said you know let's have a look at it and i would say it turned out that i was suitable a suitable person and so we did it more than friendship he could have done this for somebody else too he's capable of that what he's got is he's got enough sort of belief in himself and confidence and everything else that that he wants to do something which is going to help somebody else i think he'll be remembered as someone who was a big man and someone who perhaps should have run
